It’s only a matter of time until emotional AI is fully mainstream. AI can pick up on emotional cues to improve your online experience. Consumers tend to rely more on their emotions than anything else to make purchase decisions. When you go into a store and it’s obvious you’re having a bad day, the clerk can likely look at your face and know that. This will dictate how they interact with you, how to approach you, and what to sell you. But with so much of our purchasing activity moving online, it’s more important than ever for software to pick up on emotional cues in the same way a store clerk does. That’s where emotional AI comes in. AI and machine learning allow retailers to provide a better experience for the consumer by personalizing each interaction in ways that human employees cannot replicate — even better than a store clerk. Emotional AI can be empathetic to a customer’s frustration, can take abuse and come back with a smile. It can also pick up on your desires to deliver to your precise emotional needs. AI does this by already leveraging our online history — advanced learning algorithms developed at Facebook and Google have been applied to a treasure trove of data from billions of people. By analyzing our communications, friends, and cultural context, these algorithms are already able to identify many of our desires and emotional triggers. As with the early days of the Web, there remains much work to do — and many ethical and regulatory conversations still to be had — before emotional AI can be seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of consumers. But compared to expectations of even a few years ago, things are a lot farther along than many expected. Emotional AI isn’t being a human — it’s about making our experience online as human-like as possible. It’s not something to be intimidated by, and for tech companies (and consumers), it’s a major opportunity.

DerbyCon, the Information conference that started in a Pizza Shop, just wrapped up its eighth year with DerbyCon 8.0 “Evolution”. It is hosted in the wonderful Louisville, KY roughly around the end of September / beginning of October every year. What I’d like to present to you today is my experience, some generalized tips, and lessons learned. Keep in mind, this was my first DerbyCon and also my first large InfoSec conference (with the only one prior being .) Security BSides Cincinnati Don’t Stress if you dont’t get a ticket immediately. I had heard from DerbyCon veterans that tickets go fast. I knew I wanted to go badly, so I set an alarm on my phone letting me know when the date and time was coming for purchase. I prepared my finest F5 key and stretched my finger. And you know what? I got lucky and was able to snag the one ticket I needed. I watched Twitter and almost felt guilty as I saw others posting that they tried and were unsuccessful. But, if you kept your ear to the floor, folks began to realize they couldn’t go or bought too many tickets in the frenzy. Good news is, DerbyCon does not take kindly to ticket scalping and I didn’t see anyone online flipping them for a profit. I hate limited stuff poachers. So, as time went on, people began to sell their tickets (at face value). Some gave them away in drawings or in a charitable fashion. The bottom line, you were not totally screwed if you didn’t get one through the official channels. The DerbyCon Twitter page and community would often retweet these opportunities as well. Review the Schedule and plan your day. There is going on at DerbyCon. I found that looking at the schedule (available on the ) and marking talks I was interested in helped me cover all bases. Take the time to review the description of the talk as well. Sometimes I found the description wasn’t quite what I was expecting from the title. a lot DerbyCon website Uh… The cool thing too, if talks aren’t your thing, there are numerous workshops or “villages”. This year I saw Social Engineering, Hardware Hacking, Lockpicking, Car Hacking, and IoT. (I feel like I’m missing something, sorry!) These villages held events throughout the day where attendees could learn, and compete for prizes. Personally, I spent my time in the Social Engineering Village the majority of the time. I did attempt to get into the Lockpicking Village a few times but it was always packed to the brim with folks. Social Engineering Village In the Social Engineering Village (hosted by ), they had some really cool events. For starters, they had the Social Engineering Capture the Flag (SECTF) where competitors called companies in real-time and attempted to gather specific information. Watching these folks perform there craft was an absolute treat and there weren’t any open seats in the house. HumanHacker Competitor making vishing calls. Later on, they offered the option to sign-up and compete to see if you could beat a polygraph machine and they didn’t pull any punches with their questions. I heard them ask questions such as “Do you urinate frequently in the shower?” “Have you ever stolen from a co-worker?” “Have you ever hacked an ex?” It takes a lot of guts to get in front of your peers and get blindsided by some of these questions. I tip my hat to those who did. “Are you keeping an embarrassing secret from someone close to you?” Others things I did throughout the day included going to the Social Engineering talks (my favorites by far), another on configuring deceptive systems (honeypots), IronPython, and digital forensics. The good news is, if you have a conflicting schedule, the talks are recorded and you can catch up that way. Talks were also being streamed to the hotel itself and you could watch them from your room if so desired. Interact with people. There were a of booths. Every single one I approached had handouts and cool swag to take including T-shirts, , a beard comb, stress balls, pens, and more. While marketing teams wanted you to take the time to actually look at their booth/product before stealing their swag and running, I didn’t find a single one to be pushy or overzealous in trying to get me to sign up for anything and I learned about some really interesting products on the market. ton books If you have a specific company you want to get swag from, you should prioritize getting there as stuff can go fast! (Especially T-Shirts). I was looking forward to getting a shirt and unfortunately missed out this year. I did get a one, but not in my size. TrustedSec Binary Defense “LobbyCon” or hanging out in the hotel lobby, was a pretty nice experience as well. I sat at a larger table by myself and slowly people migrated and sat with me. I enjoyed the conversations I had with everyone and explained that it was my first DerbyCon. Each one provided me with their personal tips and lessons learned. I had questions about a few of the events and they were all helpful in either filling in the knowledge gaps or pointing me to someone who could. Interacting with the fellow attendees was one of my favorite parts! There are so many intelligent and friendly people that I didn’t feel out of place a single time. Stop lurking and talk to someone. The after parties are legit. After a long day of DerbyCon, they wrap it up with an after party Friday and Saturday night. This year, Vanilla Ice headlined Friday and The Offspring headlined Saturday. This was a blast. Yaaaas dancing Unicorn Each night started with a DJ who came on and played music and warmed the crowd up before the main event hit the stage. This involved heavy bass, free beer, and glow-sticks galore. Go Ninja Go! With a concert inside a hotel conference room, things got . This is coming from a guy who served on a Naval Warship and had to listen to insanely loud HF static on the radios all watch. I’d really consider bringing some earplugs next year as my ears were ringing by the time we walked out. loud Biggest complaint was the lack of consideration from other people in the venue itself. got on stage at the beginning of the night and reminded folks about personal space, but it fell on deaf ears. On the second night with The Offspring, a woman had a leather almost saddlebag-on-the-side-of-a-Harley looking thing on her back. She was dancing and swinging that thing around like a wrecking ball smashing into me and others in my party. There is 0% chance she didn’t realize she was doing it either, she just didn’t care. I gave a couple courtesy taps back and it seems to only encourage her. I finally just shifted in the croud and it became someone else’s problem. I would be thrilled if next year I heard bags were not permitted in the concert venue as people hitting you with them became annoying and they take up extra standing space anyway. Also, if folks in our party left any kind of a personal space bubble, someone or a group would wedge themselves into that space without consideration. I’m a little dude at 5'7 and an absolute tower of a man squeezed in front of us. I basically couldn’t see anything by the end of the night. I met a lot of cool people including the legendary who took the time to talk with me in his insanely busy schedule, and I learned a lot about Social Engineering (which is what I wanted to focus my energy on). The after parties were great with the exception of the couple of nuances I mentioned. In this article, we introduce a brand new approach that allows you to get rid of unreadable selectors and write clear and understandable test code. const todoItem = VueSelector('todo-list todo-item'); Vue.js allows you to use the component-based or declarative approach for defining web app structure. The component-based approach better fits complex applications because they need a stricter separation of concerns between the components. The team created the module — a plugin that allows you to use a component-based approach to testing Vue.js applications. This plugin enables you to select a Vue.js component by its name or a list of names. TestCafe testcafe-vue-selectors You can also access the component properties in test code. So far, TestCafe is the only framework that provides native testing experience for Vue.js applications. Let’s see how easy it is to test a Vue.js application with TestCafe. In the spring of 1871 we,—I and my wife,—had decided that we would go to Australia to visit our shepherd son. Of course before doing so I made a contract with a publisher for a book about the Colonies. For such a work as this I had always been aware that I could not fairly demand more than half the price that would be given for the same amount of fiction; and as such books have an indomitable tendency to stretch themselves, so that more is given than what is sold, and as the cost of travelling is heavy, the writing of them is not remunerative. This tendency to stretch comes not, I think, generally from the ambition of the writer, but from his inability to comprise the different parts in their allotted spaces. If you have to deal with a country, a colony, a city, a trade, or a political opinion, it is so much easier to deal with it in twenty than in twelve pages! I also made an engagement with the editor of a London daily paper to supply him with a series of articles,—which were duly written, duly published, and duly paid for. But with all this, travelling with the object of writing is not a good trade. If the travelling author can pay his bills, he must be a good manager on the road. Before starting there came upon us the terrible necessity of coming to some resolution about our house at Waltham. It had been first hired, and then bought, primarily because it suited my Post Office avocations. To this reason had been added other attractions,—in the shape of hunting, gardening, and suburban hospitalities. Altogether the house had been a success, and the scene of much happiness. But there arose questions as to expense. Would not a house in London be cheaper? There could be no doubt that my income would decrease, and was decreasing. I had thrown the Post Office, as it were, away, and the writing of novels could not go on for ever. Some of my friends told me already that at fifty-five I ought to give up the fabrication of love-stories. The hunting, I thought, must soon go, and I would not therefore allow that to keep me in the country. And then, why should I live at Waltham Cross now, seeing that I had fixed on that place in reference to the Post Office? It was therefore determined that we would flit, and as we were to be away for eighteen months, we determined also to sell our furniture. So there was a packing up, with many tears, and consultations as to what should be saved out of the things we loved. As must take place on such an occasion, there was some heart-felt grief. But the thing was done, and orders were given for the letting or sale of the house. I may as well say here that it never was let, and that it remained unoccupied for two years before it was sold. I lost by the transaction about £800. As I continually hear that other men make money by buying and selling houses, I presume I am not well adapted for transactions of that sort. I have never made money by selling anything except a manuscript. In matters of horseflesh I am so inefficient that I have generally given away horses that I have not wanted. When we started from Liverpool, in May 1871, was running through the . This was the novel of which Charles Reade afterwards took the plot and made on it a play. I have always thought it to be one of the worst novels I have written, and almost to have justified that dictum that a novelist after fifty should not write love-stories. It was in part a political novel; and that part which appertains to politics, and which recounts the electioneering experiences of the candidates at Percycross, is well enough. Percycross and Beverley were, of course, one and the same place. Neefit, the breeches-maker, and his daughter, are also good in their way,—and Moggs, the daughter's lover, who was not only lover, but also one of the candidates at Percycross as well. But the main thread of the story,—that which tells of the doings of the young gentlemen and young ladies,—the heroes and the heroines,—is not good. Ralph the heir has not much life about him; while Ralph who is not the heir, but is intended to be the real hero, has none. The same may be said of the young ladies,—of whom one, she who was meant to be the chief, has passed utterly out of my mind, without leaving a trace of remembrance behind. Ralph the Heir St. Paul's I also left in the hands of the editor of , ready for production on the 1st of July following, a story called . In that I think that my friend's dictum was disproved. There is not much love in it; but what there is, is good. The character of Lucy Morris is pretty; and her love is as genuine and as well told as that of Lucy Robarts or Lily Dale. The Fortnightly The Eustace Diamonds But achieved the success which it certainly did attain, not as a love-story, but as a record of a cunning little woman of pseudo-fashion, to whom, in her cunning, there came a series of adventures, unpleasant enough in themselves, but pleasant to the reader. As I wrote the book, the idea constantly presented itself to me that Lizzie Eustace was but a second Becky Sharpe; but in planning the character I had not thought of this, and I believe that Lizzie would have been just as she is though Becky Sharpe had never been described. The plot of the diamond necklace is, I think, well arranged, though it produced itself without any forethought. I had no idea of setting thieves after the bauble till I had got my heroine to bed in the inn at Carlisle; nor of the disappointment of the thieves, till Lizzie had been wakened in the morning with the news that her door had been broken open. All these things, and many more, Wilkie Collins would have arranged before with infinite labour, preparing things present so that they should fit in with things to come. I have gone on the very much easier plan of making everything as it comes fit in with what has gone before. At any rate, the book was a success, and did much to repair the injury which I felt had come to my reputation in the novel-market by the works of the last few years. I doubt whether I had written anything so successful as since . I had written what was much better,—as, for instance, and ; but that is by no means the same thing. The Eustace Diamonds The Eustace Diamonds The Small House at Allington Phineas Finn Nina Balatka I also left behind, in a strong box, the manuscript of , a novel of which I have already spoken, and which I subsequently sold to the proprietors of the newspaper. The editor of that paper greatly disliked the title, assuring me that the public would take Redux for the gentleman's surname,—and was dissatisfied with me when I replied that I had no objection to them doing so. The introduction of a Latin word, or of a word from any other language, into the title of an English novel is undoubtedly in bad taste; but after turning the matter much over in my own mind, I could find no other suitable name. Phineas Redux Graphic I also left behind me, in the same strong box, another novel, called , which then had been some time written, and of which, as it has not even yet been published, I will not further speak. It will probably be published some day, though, looking forward, I can see no room for it, at any rate, for the next two years. An Eye for an Eye If therefore the Great Britain, in which we sailed for Melbourne, had gone to the bottom, I had so provided that there would be new novels ready to come out under my name for some years to come. This consideration, however, did not keep me idle while I was at sea. When making long journeys, I have always succeeded in getting a desk put up in my cabin, and this was done ready for me in the Great Britain, so that I could go to work the day after we left Liverpool. This I did; and before I reached Melbourne I had finished a story called . Every word of this was written at sea, during the two months required for our voyage, and was done day by day—with the intermission of one day's illness—for eight weeks, at the rate of 66 pages of manuscript in each week, every page of manuscript containing 250 words. Every word was counted. I have seen work come back to an author from the press with terrible deficiencies as to the amount supplied. Thirty-two pages have perhaps been wanted for a number, and the printers with all their art could not stretch the matter to more than twenty-eight or -nine! The work of filling up must be very dreadful. I have sometimes been ridiculed for the methodical details of my business. But by these contrivances I have been preserved from many troubles; and I have saved others with whom I have worked—editors, publishers, and printers—from much trouble also. Lady Anna A month or two after my return home, appeared in , following . In it a young girl, who is really a lady of high rank and great wealth, though in her youth she enjoyed none of the privileges of wealth or rank, marries a tailor who had been good to her, and whom she had loved when she was poor and neglected. A fine young noble lover is provided for her, and all the charms of sweet living with nice people are thrown in her way, in order that she may be made to give up the tailor. And the charms are very powerful with her. But the feeling that she is bound by her troth to the man who had always been true to her overcomes everything,—and she marries the tailor. It was my wish of course to justify her in doing so, and to carry my readers along with me in my sympathy with her. But everybody found fault with me for marrying her to the tailor. What would they have said if I had allowed her to jilt the tailor and marry the good-looking young lord? How much louder, then, would have been the censure! The book was read, and I was satisfied. If I had not told my story well, there would have been no feeling in favour of the young lord. The horror which was expressed to me at the evil thing I had done, in giving the girl to the tailor, was the strongest testimony I could receive of the merits of the story. Lady Anna The Fortnightly The Eustace Diamonds I went to Australia chiefly in order that I might see my son among his sheep. I did see him among his sheep, and remained with him for four or five very happy weeks. He was not making money, nor has he made money since. I grieve to say that several thousands of pounds which I had squeezed out of the pockets of perhaps too liberal publishers have been lost on the venture. But I rejoice to say that this has been in no way due to any fault of his. I never knew a man work with more persistent honesty at his trade than he has done. I had, however, the further intentions of writing a book about the entire group of Australasian Colonies; and in order that I might be enabled to do that with sufficient information, I visited them all. Making my head-quarters at Melbourne, I went to Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, then to the very little known territory of Western Australia, and then, last of all, to New Zealand. I was absent in all eighteen months, and think that I did succeed in learning much of the political, social, and material condition of these countries. I wrote my book as I was travelling, and brought it back with me to England all but completed in December, 1872. It was a better book than that which I had written eleven years before on the American States, but not so good as that on the West Indies in 1859. As regards the information given, there was much more to be said about Australia than the West Indies. Very much more is said,—and very much more may be learned from the latter than from the former book. I am sure that any one who will take the trouble to read the book on Australia, will learn much from it. But the West Indian volume was readable. I am not sure that either of the other works are, in the proper sense of that word. When I go back to them I find that the pages drag with me;—and if so with me, how must it be with others who have none of that love which a father feels even for his ill-favoured offspring. Of all the needs a book has the chief need is that it be readable. Feeling that these volumes on Australia were dull and long, I was surprised to find that they had an extensive sale. There were, I think, 2000 copies circulated of the first expensive edition; and then the book was divided into four little volumes, which were published separately, and which again had a considerable circulation. That some facts were stated inaccurately, I do not doubt; that many opinions were crude, I am quite sure; that I had failed to understand much which I attempted to explain, is possible. But with all these faults the book was a thoroughly honest book, and was the result of unflagging labour for a period of fifteen months. I spared myself no trouble in inquiry, no trouble in seeing, and no trouble in listening. I thoroughly imbued my mind with the subject, and wrote with the simple intention of giving trustworthy information on the state of the Colonies. Though there be inaccuracies,—those inaccuracies to which work quickly done must always be subject,—I think I did give much valuable information. I came home across America from San Francisco to New York, visiting Utah and Brigham Young on the way. I did not achieve great intimacy with the great polygamist of the Salt Lake City. I called upon him, sending to him my card, apologising for doing so without an introduction, and excusing myself by saying that I did not like to pass through the territory without seeing a man of whom I had heard so much. He received me in his doorway, not asking me to enter, and inquired whether I were not a miner. When I told him that I was not a miner, he asked me whether I earned my bread. I told him I did. "I guess you're a miner," said he. I again assured him that I was not. "Then how do you earn your bread?" I told him that I did so by writing books. "I'm sure you're a miner," said he. Then he turned upon his heel, went back into the house, and closed the door. I was properly punished, as I was vain enough to conceive that he would have heard my name. I got home in December, 1872, and in spite of any resolution made to the contrary, my mind was full of hunting as I came back. No real resolutions had in truth been made, for out of a stud of four horses I kept three, two of which were absolutely idle through the two summers and winter of my absence. Immediately on my arrival I bought another, and settled myself down to hunting from London three days a week. At first I went back to Essex, my old country, but finding that to be inconvenient, I took my horses to Leighton Buzzard, and became one of that numerous herd of sportsmen who rode with the "Baron" and Mr. Selby Lowndes. In those days Baron Meyer was alive, and the riding with his hounds was very good. I did not care so much for Mr. Lowndes. During the winters of 1873, 1874, and 1875, I had my horses back in Essex, and went on with my hunting, always trying to resolve that I would give it up. But still I bought fresh horses, and, as I did not give it up, I hunted more than ever. Three times a week the cab has been at my door in London very punctually, and not unfrequently before seven in the morning. In order to secure this attendance, the man has always been invited to have his breakfast in the hall. I have gone to the Great Eastern Railway,—ah! so often with the fear that frost would make all my exertions useless, and so often too with that result! And then, from one station or another station, have travelled on wheels at least a dozen miles. After the day's sport, the same toil has been necessary to bring me home to dinner at eight. This has been work for a young man and a rich man, but I have done it as an old man and comparatively a poor man. Now at last, in April, 1876, I do think that my resolution has been taken. I am giving away my old horses, and anybody is welcome to my saddles and horse-furniture. And then they stretch their power, and crush at last Even the power of singing of the past." I think that I may say with truth that I rode hard to my end. "Vixi puellis nuper idoneus, Et militavi non sine gloria; Nunc arma defunctumque bello Barbiton hic paries habebit." Whilst this concert was going on, a bystander would carelessly take up one of the books scattered here and there on the tables, and, having found an interesting passage, would read it aloud, whilst his audience listened good-humouredly, and complimented him with a flattering murmur of applause. Newspapers were scattered on the sofas, generally American and English, which always look old, although the pages have never been cut; it is a very tiresome operation reading these great sheets, which take up so much room, but the fashion being to leave them uncut, so they remain. He was going to coin money out of the cattle of the Pampas. Another, the inventor of a portable motive-power—a steam horse in a watch-case—was going to exhibit his patent in New England. Another, a Frenchman from the “Rue Chapon,” was carrying to America 30,000 cardboard dolls, which said “papa” with a very successful Yankee accent, and he had no doubt but that his fortune was made. But besides these originals, there were still others whose secrets we could not guess; perhaps among them was some cashier flying from his empty cash-box, and a detective making friends with him, only waiting for the end of the passage to take him by the collar; perhaps also we might have found in this crowd clever genii, who always find people ready to believe in them, even when they advocate the affairs of “The Oceanic Company for lighting Polynesia with gas,” or “The Royal Society for making incombustible coal.” But at this moment my attention was attracted by the entrance of a young couple who seemed to be under the influence of a precocious weariness. “They are Peruvians, my dear sir,” said the Doctor, “a couple married a year ago, who have been to all parts of the world for their honeymoon. IN WHICH PASSEPARTOUT UNDERGOES, AT A SPEED OF TWENTY MILES AN HOUR, A COURSE OF MORMON HISTORY During the night of the 5th of December, the train ran south-easterly for about fifty miles; then rose an equal distance in a north-easterly direction, towards the Great Salt Lake. Passepartout, about nine o’clock, went out upon the platform to take the air. The weather was cold, the heavens grey, but it was not snowing. The sun’s disc, enlarged by the mist, seemed an enormous ring of gold, and Passepartout was amusing himself by calculating its value in pounds sterling, when he was diverted from this interesting study by a strange-looking personage who made his appearance on the platform. This personage, who had taken the train at Elko, was tall and dark, with black moustache, black stockings, a black silk hat, a black waistcoat, black trousers, a white cravat, and dogskin gloves. He might have been taken for a clergyman. He went from one end of the train to the other, and affixed to the door of each car a notice written in manuscript. Passepartout approached and read one of these notices, which stated that Elder William Hitch, Mormon missionary, taking advantage of his presence on train No. 48, would deliver a lecture on Mormonism in car No. 117, from eleven to twelve o’clock; and that he invited all who were desirous of being instructed concerning the mysteries of the religion of the “Latter Day Saints” to attend. “I’ll go,” said Passepartout to himself. He knew nothing of Mormonism except the custom of polygamy, which is its foundation. The news quickly spread through the train, which contained about one hundred passengers, thirty of whom, at most, attracted by the notice, ensconced themselves in car No. 117. Passepartout took one of the front seats. Neither Mr. Fogg nor Fix cared to attend. At the appointed hour Elder William Hitch rose, and, in an irritated voice, as if he had already been contradicted, said, “I tell you that Joe Smith is a martyr, that his brother Hiram is a martyr, and that the persecutions of the United States Government against the prophets will also make a martyr of Brigham Young. Who dares to say the contrary?” No one ventured to gainsay the missionary, whose excited tone contrasted curiously with his naturally calm visage. No doubt his anger arose from the hardships to which the Mormons were actually subjected. The government had just succeeded, with some difficulty, in reducing these independent fanatics to its rule. It had made itself master of Utah, and subjected that territory to the laws of the Union, after imprisoning Brigham Young on a charge of rebellion and polygamy. The disciples of the prophet had since redoubled their efforts, and resisted, by words at least, the authority of Congress. Elder Hitch, as is seen, was trying to make proselytes on the very railway trains. Then, emphasising his words with his loud voice and frequent gestures, he related the history of the Mormons from Biblical times: how that, in Israel, a Mormon prophet of the tribe of Joseph published the annals of the new religion, and bequeathed them to his son Mormon; how, many centuries later, a translation of this precious book, which was written in Egyptian, was made by Joseph Smith, junior, a Vermont farmer, who revealed himself as a mystical prophet in 1825; and how, in short, the celestial messenger appeared to him in an illuminated forest, and gave him the annals of the Lord. Several of the audience, not being much interested in the missionary’s narrative, here left the car; but Elder Hitch, continuing his lecture, related how Smith, junior, with his father, two brothers, and a few disciples, founded the church of the “Latter Day Saints,” which, adopted not only in America, but in England, Norway and Sweden, and Germany, counts many artisans, as well as men engaged in the liberal professions, among its members; how a colony was established in Ohio, a temple erected there at a cost of two hundred thousand dollars, and a town built at Kirkland; how Smith became an enterprising banker, and received from a simple mummy showman a papyrus scroll written by Abraham and several famous Egyptians. The Elder’s story became somewhat wearisome, and his audience grew gradually less, until it was reduced to twenty passengers. But this did not disconcert the enthusiast, who proceeded with the story of Joseph Smith’s bankruptcy in 1837, and how his ruined creditors gave him a coat of tar and feathers; his reappearance some years afterwards, more honourable and honoured than ever, at Independence, Missouri, the chief of a flourishing colony of three thousand disciples, and his pursuit thence by outraged Gentiles, and retirement into the Far West. Ten hearers only were now left, among them honest Passepartout, who was listening with all his ears. Thus he learned that, after long persecutions, Smith reappeared in Illinois, and in 1839 founded a community at Nauvoo, on the Mississippi, numbering twenty-five thousand souls, of which he became mayor, chief justice, and general-in-chief; that he announced himself, in 1843, as a candidate for the Presidency of the United States; and that finally, being drawn into ambuscade at Carthage, he was thrown into prison, and assassinated by a band of men disguised in masks. Passepartout was now the only person left in the car, and the Elder, looking him full in the face, reminded him that, two years after the assassination of Joseph Smith, the inspired prophet, Brigham Young, his successor, left Nauvoo for the banks of the Great Salt Lake, where, in the midst of that fertile region, directly on the route of the emigrants who crossed Utah on their way to California, the new colony, thanks to the polygamy practised by the Mormons, had flourished beyond expectations. “And this,” added Elder William Hitch, “this is why the jealousy of Congress has been aroused against us! Why have the soldiers of the Union invaded the soil of Utah? Why has Brigham Young, our chief, been imprisoned, in contempt of all justice? Shall we yield to force? Never! Driven from Vermont, driven from Illinois, driven from Ohio, driven from Missouri, driven from Utah, we shall yet find some independent territory on which to plant our tents. And you, my brother,” continued the Elder, fixing his angry eyes upon his single auditor, “will you not plant yours there, too, under the shadow of our flag?” “No!” replied Passepartout courageously, in his turn retiring from the car, and leaving the Elder to preach to vacancy. During the lecture the train had been making good progress, and towards half-past twelve it reached the northwest border of the Great Salt Lake. Thence the passengers could observe the vast extent of this interior sea, which is also called the Dead Sea, and into which flows an American Jordan. It is a picturesque expanse, framed in lofty crags in large strata, encrusted with white salt—a superb sheet of water, which was formerly of larger extent than now, its shores having encroached with the lapse of time, and thus at once reduced its breadth and increased its depth. The Salt Lake, seventy miles long and thirty-five wide, is situated three miles eight hundred feet above the sea. Quite different from Lake Asphaltite, whose depression is twelve hundred feet below the sea, it contains considerable salt, and one quarter of the weight of its water is solid matter, its specific weight being 1,170, and, after being distilled, 1,000. Fishes are, of course, unable to live in it, and those which descend through the Jordan, the Weber, and other streams soon perish. The country around the lake was well cultivated, for the Mormons are mostly farmers; while ranches and pens for domesticated animals, fields of wheat, corn, and other cereals, luxuriant prairies, hedges of wild rose, clumps of acacias and milk-wort, would have been seen six months later. Now the ground was covered with a thin powdering of snow. The train reached Ogden at two o’clock, where it rested for six hours, Mr. Fogg and his party had time to pay a visit to Salt Lake City, connected with Ogden by a branch road; and they spent two hours in this strikingly American town, built on the pattern of other cities of the Union, like a checker-board, “with the sombre sadness of right-angles,” as Victor Hugo expresses it. The founder of the City of the Saints could not escape from the taste for symmetry which distinguishes the Anglo-Saxons. In this strange country, where the people are certainly not up to the level of their institutions, everything is done “squarely”—cities, houses, and follies. The travellers, then, were promenading, at three o’clock, about the streets of the town built between the banks of the Jordan and the spurs of the Wahsatch Range. They saw few or no churches, but the prophet’s mansion, the court-house, and the arsenal, blue-brick houses with verandas and porches, surrounded by gardens bordered with acacias, palms, and locusts. A clay and pebble wall, built in 1853, surrounded the town; and in the principal street were the market and several hotels adorned with pavilions. The place did not seem thickly populated. The streets were almost deserted, except in the vicinity of the temple, which they only reached after having traversed several quarters surrounded by palisades. There were many women, which was easily accounted for by the “peculiar institution” of the Mormons; but it must not be supposed that all the Mormons are polygamists. They are free to marry or not, as they please; but it is worth noting that it is mainly the female citizens of Utah who are anxious to marry, as, according to the Mormon religion, maiden ladies are not admitted to the possession of its highest joys. These poor creatures seemed to be neither well off nor happy. Some—the more well-to-do, no doubt—wore short, open, black silk dresses, under a hood or modest shawl; others were habited in Indian fashion. Passepartout could not behold without a certain fright these women, charged, in groups, with conferring happiness on a single Mormon. His common sense pitied, above all, the husband. It seemed to him a terrible thing to have to guide so many wives at once across the vicissitudes of life, and to conduct them, as it were, in a body to the Mormon paradise with the prospect of seeing them in the company of the glorious Smith, who doubtless was the chief ornament of that delightful place, to all eternity. He felt decidedly repelled from such a vocation, and he imagined—perhaps he was mistaken—that the fair ones of Salt Lake City cast rather alarming glances on his person. Happily, his stay there was but brief. At four the party found themselves again at the station, took their places in the train, and the whistle sounded for starting. Just at the moment, however, that the locomotive wheels began to move, cries of “Stop! stop!” were heard. Trains, like time and tide, stop for no one. The gentleman who uttered the cries was evidently a belated Mormon. He was breathless with running. Happily for him, the station had neither gates nor barriers. He rushed along the track, jumped on the rear platform of the train, and fell, exhausted, into one of the seats. Passepartout, who had been anxiously watching this amateur gymnast, approached him with lively interest, and learned that he had taken flight after an unpleasant domestic scene. Mr. Bill Eversleigh was assiduously filing letters, but a large arm-chair near the window was still warm from contact with a human form. A very likeable young man, Bill Eversleigh. Age at a guess, twenty-five, big and rather ungainly in his movements, a pleasurably ugly face, a splendid set of white teeth and a pair of honest brown eyes. “Richardson sent up that report yet?” “No, sir. Shall I get on to him about it?” “It doesn’t matter. Any telephone messages?” “Miss Oscar is dealing with most of them. Mr. Isaacstein wants to know if you can dine with him at the Savoy to-morrow.” “Tell Miss Oscar to look in my engagement-book. If I’m not engaged, she can ring up and accept.” “Yes, sir.” “By the way, Eversleigh, you might ring up a number for me now. Look it up in the book. I was trying to ring her up just now.” George Lomax frowned. “Annoying,” he said, “distinctly annoying.” He tapped the table undecidedly. “If it’s anything important, sir, perhaps I might go round there now in a taxi. She’s sure to be in at this time in the morning.” George Lomax hesitated, pondering the matter. Bill waited expectantly, poised for instant flight, should the reply be favourable. “Perhaps that would be the best plan,” said Lomax at last. “Very well, then, take a taxi there, and ask Mrs. Revel if she will be at home this afternoon at four o’clock as I am very anxious to see her about an important matter.” “Right, sir.” Bill seized his hat and departed. Ten minutes later, a taxi deposited him at 487, Pont Street. He rang the bell and executed a loud rat-tat on the knocker. The door was opened by a grave functionary to whom Bill nodded with the ease of long acquaintance. “Morning, Chilvers, Mrs. Revel in?” “I believe, sir, that she is just going out.” “Is that you, Bill?” called a voice over the banisters. “I thought I recognized that muscular knock. Come up and talk to me.” Bill looked up at the face that was laughing down on him, and which was always inclined to reduce him—and not him alone—to a state of babbling incoherency. He took the stairs two at a time and clasped Virginia Revel’s out-stretched hands tightly in his. “Hullo, Virginia!” “Hullo, Bill!” Charm is a very peculiar thing; hundreds of young women, some of them more beautiful than Virginia Revel, might have said “Hullo, Bill,” with exactly the same intonation, and yet have produced no effect whatever. But those two simple words, uttered by Virginia, had the most intoxicating effect upon Bill. Virginia Revel was just twenty-seven. She was tall and of an exquisite slimness—indeed, a poem might have been written to her slimness, it was so exquisitely proportioned. Her hair was of real bronze, with the greenish tint in its gold; she had a determined little chin, a lovely nose, slanting blue eyes that showed a gleam of deepest cornflower between the half-closed lids, and a delicious and quite indescribable mouth that tilted ever so slightly at one corner in what is known as “the signature of Venus.” It was a wonderfully expressive face, and there was a sort of radiant vitality about her that always challenged attention. It would have been quite impossible ever to ignore Virginia Revel. She drew Bill into the small drawing-room which was all pale and mauve and green and yellow, like crocuses surprised in a meadow. “Bill, darling,” said Virginia, “isn’t the Foreign Office missing you? I thought they couldn’t get on without you.” “I’ve brought a message for you from Codders.” Thus irreverently did Bill allude to his chief. “And by the way, Virginia, in case he asks, remember that your telephone was out of order this morning.” “But it hasn’t been.” “I know that. But I said it was.” “Why? Enlighten me as to this Foreign Office touch.” Bill threw her a reproachful glance. “So that I could get here and see you, of course.” “Oh, darling Bill, how dense of me! And how perfectly sweet of you!” “Chilvers said you were going out.” “So I was—to Sloane Street. There’s a place there where they’ve got a perfectly wonderful new hip band.” “A hip band?” “Yes, Bill, H.I.P. hip, B.A.N.D. band. A band to confine the hips. You wear it next the skin.” “I blush for you, Virginia. You shouldn’t describe your underwear to a young man to whom you are not related. It isn’t delicate.” “But, Bill dear, there’s nothing indelicate about hips. We’ve all got hips—although we poor women are trying awfully hard to pretend we haven’t. This hip band is made of red rubber and comes just to above the knee, and it’s simply impossible to walk in it.” “How awful!” said Bill. “Why do you do it?” “Oh, because it gives one such a noble feeling to suffer for one’s silhouette. But don’t let’s talk about my hip band. Give me George’s message.” “He wants to know whether you’ll be in at four o’clock this afternoon.” “I shan’t. I shall be at Ranelagh. Why this sort of formal call? Is he going to propose to me, do you think?” “I shouldn’t wonder.” “Because, if so, you can tell him that I much prefer men who propose on impulse.” “Like me?” “It’s not an impulse with you, Bill. It’s habit.” “Virginia, won’t you ever——” “No, no, no, Bill. I won’t have it in the morning before lunch. Do try and think of me as a nice motherly person approaching middle age who has your interests thoroughly at heart.” “Virginia, I do love you so.” “I know, Bill, I know. I should like every nice man in the world to be in love with me.” “Most of them are, I expect,” said Bill gloomily. “But I hope George isn’t in love with me. I don’t think he can be.
