It’s integrated into ChatGPT , allowing you to enable it with a Search button or simply ask ChatGPT to search the web. ChatGPT As I mentioned, I’ve been a long-time user of ChatGPT for several years, so I seamlessly integrated the search feature into my routine. Since free Perplexity uses GPT-3.5, all its features like AI search with no ads, no endless scrolling, and results organized into threads with helpful tips are available here as well. My favorite feature here is its accessibility, offering text-to-speech, and the ability to create queries via audio, and audio dialogs. Choose your fighter Search Quality Search Quality Search Quality Search Quality Perplexity excels at finding information, while ChatGPT Search is better at explaining it. From a user perspective, I wouldn’t say I’ve encountered any critical issues with not finding something. It’s just a matter of different approaches. Even when a link is provided, the relevant information might not actually be there. It’s always better to double-check and read the sources yourself. Based on my experience, ChatGPT is more prone to generating unsupported content than Perplexity, but I’ve encountered this issue in both tools. Search Speed Search Speed Search Speed Search Speed I didn’t notice a significant difference between the two in terms of speed. However, both are slower than a standard browser search. The ChatGPT extension lets you use ChatGPT as your primary search engine, replacing, for example, Google. When you enter something in the search bar, it redirects you to ChatGPT, where your query is processed. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan. It’s slower than Google, and you can feel it. I still prefer a traditional search bar for quick lookups. Perplexity’s Chrome extension works differently. Instead of replacing your search engine, it opens a small window over the current page, allowing you to googling and query Perplexity simultaneously. I really loved this one, because it’s more useful for me. The drawback is that you can only enter one query at a time, and if you want to continue the conversation, it redirects you to a separate Perplexity tab. Perplexity Pro stands out with its use of multiple models and built-in illustrations. On the other hand, I really appreciate ChatGPT’s accessibility and seamless integration into its apps, which I use for more than just search. Turns out, neither can Perplexity Pro, even with all its models. Final Take: Which Works Best for What To start with, I’m a fan of AI search. Usually, it takes longer than quick googling, so here’s how I see it: if I need a super quick answer from the first link, I’ll use a standard browser search. But if I need to find more information or conduct deeper research, AI search is the way to go. It’s the best method to uncover valuable insights more efficiently. As for ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, in my experience, they solve different problems. ChatGPT Search perfectly extends ChatGPT’s capabilities, given that ChatGPT’s knowledge base only goes up to the year 2021. It’s perfect for studying and gaining insights using up-to-date web information. Perplexity, on the other hand, is better for finding something more thoroughly. It takes more from browser search, like incognito pages, and its approach to work with your prompts. It is about searching for information first and explaining second, in contrast to ChatGPT Search. For me: For me: Need to find something? Perplexity. Need to understand something? ChatGPT + Search. Need to find something? Perplexity. Need to find something? Need to understand something? Venmo would’ve taken many batches over many days, and I didn’t want to pay 3% to a payment processor to take his credit card. I mentioned he could open a Coinbase account and use USDC to send me the money for free, in full, instantly. He laughed. In the end, he paid $10 to overnight a paper cashier’s check through USPS priority mail. (And you think ETH fees are high!) DALL-E drew a cartoon about it: Uphill battle People are strange. They will go through all sorts of inconveniences to stick with what they know. Crypto peeps go on and on about usability and product-market fit, but that’s a big hurdle. Ask anybody who’s had to guide Aunt Sally and Uncle Morton through their iPhone settings. They can tell you it takes more than a good interface and UX. You need to give people a compelling reason to switch. (For Aunt Sally and Uncle Morton, those reasons are Facebook, Facetime, and text messages.) We’re still trying to find that killer app or service that gives people a compelling reason to switch. Like pushing an ox up a mountain For your average person, Bitcoin seems slow, expensive, complicated, and they can’t spend it on most of the things they want. Of course, you can say the same about checks, but not really. There’s a big difference. Everybody’s used to checks. They’re normal. When you handle checks, you don’t have to learn anything new. You don’t even need to know how to balance a checkbook anymore — most banks handle all the paperwork and tracking for you. In fact, banks spend a lot of time and effort to make checking as easy as possible. They design the experience so you don’t think about fees, costs, and risks. Some even throw in a complimentary starter pack when you open your account (replacement books cost $10 and up). Usually, banks include debit cards and free ATM access. That way, you never have to actually use those checks — which is good, because most businesses don’t take checks anyway. Unless you’re poor, banks will usually waive your first bounced-check fee and rarely charge to stop payment on a check. If you give them enough money, they won’t even charge maintenance fees on your account. Traditional banking has several centuries head start on Bitcoin when it comes to customer service and user experience — which isn’t saying much, as anybody who’s gone to a bank can tell you. But banking is so common that most people have no other frame of reference. Over 90% of Americans have a bank account, as does half of the rest of the world. The value of something you got for free Allow me to share three short stories about three real people who’ve gotten Bitcoin as gifts. I changed their names because somebody said I’m supposed to do that when I write about people online without their permission. Louise, the baby boomer Louise got 1 Bitcoin from her son. She keeps it in a Coinbase account on her phone. Despite multiple tutorials and lots of handholding, she still does not know how to use it. She wonders why its price goes up and down like crazy. When I asked her what she planned to do with it, she said she would keep it in her Coinbase wallet because her son says it might be worth something someday. “Who knows? It went from nothing to $70,000, it might do that again!” She doesn’t care about open, public, permissionless, borderless, neutral, censorship-resistant financial networks. Her son gave her a Bitcoin and said, “hold onto it.” She has plenty of money and did nothing to earn that Bitcoin. Why would she care about it? Oslo, the curious Oslo asked me for advice about buying Bitcoin. I helped him out. Even sent him a few thousand sats as a gift after he set up his wallet. Now that he has his coins, he complains about how hard it was to set up and that nobody else uses it. He told me he’ll keep the Bitcoin for his kids. After all, it might be useful one day and everybody says it’ll go up. Maybe his kids will appreciate him for it, but that doesn’t do anybody any good right now. Mallory, the idiot Mallory won’t mind me calling him an idiot because he’s an old friend of mine. And really, he’s not an idiot. He’s just simple. I bought him $18 worth of Bitcoin in 2018. I told him he could get his $18 back any time he wanted, on demand, any time. My gift to him. Or, keep the Bitcoin. His choice. No time limit. Didn’t set him up with a wallet or anything, just sent .0021 Bitcoin to a new wallet I created. I have the keys, ready to turn them over as soon as he asks. That Bitcoin’s still sitting in that wallet. The keys are still securely mine. At one point, the price of that .0021 Bitcoin dipped down to $7.35. He could’ve taken my $18, bought himself his own Bitcoin, and ended up way ahead. Nope. Now, that Bitcoin’s worth about $140. He doesn’t care. If Bitcoin’s price goes to $1 million like everybody says, he’ll have $2,100. Just for being my friend. I’ll bet he still won’t collect it. Why? “I don’t know how to use it” and “if you think it’ll go up, I’ll hold it.” Bitcoin isn’t good enough yet As new technology develops, it usually moves from hard, complicated, and interesting to easy, simple, and boring. Easy, simple, and boring is good. Almost every mainstream thing is easy, simple, and boring. That’s how you know your technology has arrived. Bitcoin’s not there yet. Like all new tech, it has to cross the “chasm of adoption,” as shown on this diagram of the technology adoption life cycle: Sometimes, technology falls into the chasm and dies — but usually, good technologies survive and prosper. It just takes a while to catch on. After 15 years of moving from enthusiasts to visionaries, Bitcoin has entered the chasm. Medium writer Omar M. Khateeb posits that within that chasm, there are four stages: Complacency/Marginalization, Ridicule, Criticism, and Acceptance. You can see it in that bell curve above the chasm, also shown below: If Omar’s right, we’re probably at the “criticism” stage. Should we really push people to use Bitcoin now, when it’s still slow, complicated, and you can’t do much with it? Probably not. We need to get to acceptance, but Bitcoin needs to earn that. A lot of money’s going into memecoins, smart contract platforms, Bitcoin spin-offs, and other tokens. That takes money from people who are working to make Bitcoin faster, cheaper, better, easier, and more useful. Once people lose enough money on these alternatives, the survivors will have to come back to Bitcoin. More do so with each cycle (however you define cycle). Two powerful AI tools are making waves in the world: NEW ChatGPT Search and Perplexity AI. But which one is better for you? I've tested them and want to share my results. What is ChatGPT Search? ChatGPT Search is a feature in OpenAI's ChatGPT that allows it to look up current information on the internet. This means ChatGPT can provide up-to-date answers on topics like news, weather, and sports scores. This feature will initially be available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers, with plans to expand access to all users in the future. What is Perplexity AI? Perplexity AI is a search engine that uses artificial intelligence to provide direct answers to your questions, instead of just giving you a list of links. When you ask something, it searches the internet and gives you a clear, conversational response with sources you can check. This makes finding information faster and easier. ChatGPT Search vs. Perplexity AI I’m going to try different versions of prompts to see how well these tools handle them. General Search Tasks Prompt: Tell me about proflead.dev website Both answers are almost perfect, but Perplexity gives more descriptive information. You can also select different AI models inside Perplexity. Prompt: Find for me the best Thai restaurants in Chiang Mai city. Both AIs give good answers and even provide maps with the restaurant locations. But the visual map inside ChatGPT looks and works better. Both of these AIs use multiple sources to search for information. For instance, ChatGPT uses about 12 sources. And Perplexity used nine sources. Real-Time Search Tasks Let's try some real-time queries. Prompt: What is the weather and air situation in Chiang Mai today? In this prompt, I asked two questions—about the weather and air quality. ChatGPT provides answers for both, while Perplexity only responds about the weather. However, Perplexity offers better visual graphics. Prompt: What is the traffic situation in Chiang Mai now? ChatGPT's response was more accurate, while Perplexity's answer reflected information from three weeks ago. I'd say ChatGPT passed this test, while Perplexity may need a more specific prompt to improve its response. Prompt: What are the Apple stock prices? ChatGPT's response was more concise and did not include any graphics, whereas Perplexity provided a more detailed answer along with an impressive interactive chart. Topic Specific Tasks I also asked the AI a few programming questions. They might sound simple, but in the past, some AIs struggled to answer them correctly. Prompt: Is this expression true in JavaScript true == "true"? This time, Perplexity's response was better because it provided explanations along with code examples, whereas ChatGPT only gave explanations. Prompt: how about 0 == "0"? NotebookLM & Perplexity Spaces: Everything You Need to Know

A few weekends ago, I had lunch with some friends. We were having our quarterly life catch-up just discussing what we had been up to and how our lives were going. It was the usual stuff; Work, fitness, holidays and the latest albums by some of our favourite musicians. I don’t remember how it happened, but the conversation switched to relationships, and I knew exactly where it was going to end. You see, two of my non-tech friends dated people in tech and had bad experiences, so every once in a while, they liked to make fun of ‘my people’. Nothing serious to be honest, just the kind of banter that is expected with friends. Their ‘theory’ is that a lot of tech people are “Introverted, nerds who think too logically about everything and may not be in-tune with their emotional side” To be honest, I don’t know if all that is true. What I do know is that I don’t want to be at the end of their jokes at our next catch up so I’ve decided to do something about it. I’ve decided to write a guide to romantic relationships for tech people in a language that they understand. Think of this as an API documentation or user guide for romantic relationships. 1. Never assume, Ask. If you’ve launched software products I’m sure you understand that users don’t always behave how you expect them to. It’s quite common, and a popular example is how Instagram started as Burbn, a location photo and note-sharing app but it turned out that people only wanted to use the photo-sharing features. That is what became Instagram. Well, the same thing happens in relationships. You can’t always assume that you know what your partner wants and needs. You can make informed assumptions, but when in doubt, ask. You’ll be surprised what you might learn about someone that you thought you knew everything about. 2. ‘Listen’ to what your users do, not what they say. This sounds like a counter to the previous point but it’s not. If you have ever done user interviews, you know that sometimes users just say what they think you want to hear, other times they don’t even know what they want. In those scenarios, you need to observe their actions to see what they actually do rather than just listening to what they say. It can be the same with relationships. Sometimes you need to see what your partner actually does to understand what they really mean and what they want. They may not say certain things because they don’t want to hurt your feelings or because they are unsure how to explain them. This is why it’s important to observe their actions instead. 3. Communicate clearly, always. Clear communication is very important in all aspects of life, from nurturing relationships to building software. Take payment/bank apps for example. Which apps do you prefer? The ones that send you an email/notification when there’s a known issue with processing payments or the ones that don’t say anything and wait till you try to make a payment and your money is lost in oblivion? It’s the same with relationships. Try as much as you can to communicate your plans, intentions and challenges (if any). It helps to build trust and assures your partner that you will always let them know if anything is wrong. 4. Never forget delighters. Product delighters are those small things in a software product that are there mostly to excite users. They don’t necessarily have any real functional value but they excite or make customers happy. A good example is that when you open up the Chrome browser while offline, the dinosaur in the error message turns into a game when you tap the space bar. The Chrome team didn’t have to add that, but they did and it delights users. It’s the same in relationships. Never forget the little things. A handwritten ‘thank you’ note, restocking their fridge with their favourite snack. These are really small things and you don’t have to do them, but it goes a long way when you do. 5. Keep iterating. When you launch an app what happens next? Do you just launch and then abandon the app? No!!! You fix bugs and think of what features to build next! If you agree with this then why would you treat relationships differently? Why would you stop doing the things that your partner liked so much when you first met? Are you fixing your behavioural bugs/issues? Are you thinking of ways to be a better partner? Are you still putting in effort to stay fit and dress well? Are you willing to iterate and keep improving as a person, as a partner? These are important questions to ask yourself. To be honest, I didn’t write this because I’m a love guru or anything like that. I wrote this because I think there are parallels between tech and relationships and they can be a game changer for any tech person who wants to improve in this aspect of their lives. I think that just like refining a software product, nurturing a relationship requires ongoing effort, attention to detail, and a willingness to adapt. It has helped us run more efficiently while supporting companies with people across the globe. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? I'd likely be teaching entrepreneurship. There are so many start up norms that I believe need to be debunked and not further spread - hustle culture, ignoring the power of a diverse team, thinking venture funding is the only path, etc. I believe that more people seeing alternatives will build a better ecosystem. These classes exist in top universities and in tech hub cities, but I think they should also be available in junior colleges and smaller regional schools. You never know where the next amazing idea will come from! At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your metrics? I measure my personal success not by a metric but by checking in with myself to ensure I'm doing things every day that support (what I believe) is a more inclusive world. On a company level, success metrics are around our reach. We believe that every employee should have full access to the benefits they are eligible for, so the more people we reach, the more inclusive we can make work environments for employees. In a few sentences, what do you offer to whom? We offer companies a platform to provide personalized lifestyle benefits that their employees actually want and use. Our solution helps HR teams deliver inclusive benefits while giving finance teams the compliance and budget control they need. Where do you think your growth will be next year? There is also a lot of interest in family benefits (beyond the narrow scope of fertility) and professional development stipends, for which we're expanding our platform features. Our biggest challenge isn't competition but inertia. Many companies are stuck in the 'this is how we've always done it' benefits mindset -- and some always will be. But as younger generations enter the workforce and demand more personalized experiences (and older generations take note and join the movement), this resistance to change becomes increasingly expensive in terms of talent attraction and retention.

It was a lonely and uncertain time. Nobody paid attention to Bitcoin. They thought crypto was dead, a passing fad that fell into the dustbin of history. At the time, I and others thought their apathy created an opportunity: we get to introduce people to a new world-changing technology! Nope. With the introduction of ETFs, Wall Street took that job. We kept Michael Saylor, they got Larry Fink. VCs have invested billions of dollars into crypto start-ups. They are now the face of crypto, pushing overpriced tokens for projects that have atrocious tokenomics and astronomical valuations. Memecoins suck up investment capital and get the attention on social media. Some altcoins have created new paradigms that stretch the boundaries of what’s possible, but they toil in the shadows. You only hear about them on Telegram, Twitter, and Medium (unless some influencer shills them). “At least you can make money on meme coins,” they say. Which is basically what crypto has become. A way to make money. The faster, the better. You can understand why. Most people don’t worry about inverted yield curves and undercapitalized banks. Nor do they recognize violations of their privacy and human rights. They don’t have any problems with the authorities. In fact, they look for those authorities to fix their problems. To them, crypto seems like an odd abstraction, not an innovative technology. Since they don’t know anything’s broken, they don’t see how Bitcoin fixes it. But they do see a chance to make money. Dutch disease Technology does not decide its fate. People do. They figure out what works and what doesn’t, what’s valuable and what’s not. Projects compete and collaborate. Some win. Some lose but find niche applications. Some just lose. We grow, prosper, and move on. Not so with crypto. You don’t get rewarded for creating things people use. All that matters is whether your token goes up. As a result, people don’t make useful things. They sell tokens for cash and spend it on other things. As a result, you have millions of people who don’t know anything about cryptocurrency, but they see Wall Street’s talking heads saying it’s good for your portfolio and people like us saying they’ll make money from tokens.   As such, is it any wonder that they flock to NFTs, memecoins, and new “L2s?” Should you need to wonder why prediction markets and decentralized exchanges remain the most popular crypto apps? We have a form of Dutch disease, an economic phenomenon in which so many people make money from one activity that they stop investing in other activities. They simply buy the things they want with the money they get. This is the premise of my first book, Consensusland. The country makes so much money selling crypto, nobody does anything else. They cash out their crypto, buy what they want, and find new cryptos to sell. Stifling, not liberating Sounds nice, doesn’t it? That's great for us early buyers, but no way to build an industry. Imagine what people would’ve said about AI if the most prominent advocates shouted “long the robots, short the humans!” or “buy these 5 robots to make $1 million in 2024?” Some people worked on robots, others worked on computers, and they occasionally collaborated on cross-disciplinary projects while “the mainstream” simply used whatever they came up with. They didn't have any tokens to sell. They had to create useful things before they could make money. Everybody recognized the value in AI and the money they could make. But that was the outcome, not the goal. With cryptocurrency, the profit comes before the work. The problem? By the time the work matters, developers have already made their money. VCs have already recovered their investments and, in some cases, cashed out completely. The teams have already gotten paid. They don't care anymore. The Great Letdown I fully empathize with Bitcoin maximalists. They see a world of opportunity that goes far beyond whatever cash they can make from flipping NFTs and memecoins. I want that world, too — a fairer, more equitable monetary system that’s accessible to everybody and does not let governments destroy the value of your money. How about we talk about human rights and corruption, better financial systems, more privacy, and lower business costs? Cryptocurrency solves many problems. You’d think it should be easy to get people on board, right? To show them how useful it is? Why it matters? Nope. No money in that. Crypto will not matter until you decide to let it matter If you’re HODLing Bitcoin for Lambos or using it to promote yourself, you’re doing the same thing. That’s why people only think about crypto when prices go up. Through our actions, we make it seem like “price go up” is the only thing crypto has to offer. Until that changes, nobody will take us seriously. Nobody will care about the technology, its applications, or any of the wonderful things people are trying to build. We have replaced value creation with raw speculation, but people inherently crave value. They care about things that make their lives better. They'll pump our bags and give you exit liquidity, if you choose to take it. That's probably why you got into crypto in the first place. Eventually, the well will run dry. Speculators will lose enough money that they will stop chasing fast profits. What happens when people realize they can't make money from crypto anymore?
