JAMESTOWN With unquenchable hopefulness Raleigh continued his quest for the Lost Colony to the close of Elizabeth’s reign, and abandoned it only when forced to do so by the attainder of James stripping him of his rights and liberty. By Elizabeth’s last year he had fitted out at his own charges five several expeditions solely for this purpose. While during this period, 1589–1603, his marvellous energies had been directed in many channels, he had remitted no efforts for the succour of his colonists. While performing many parts,—courtier, captain of the queen’s guard, statesman, member of parliament, mariner, sea-fighter, explorer, gold seeker,—and with varying fortunes, now falling under the queen’s displeasure, imprisoned in the Tower of London, again restored to her favour, engaged in dazzling adventure, American colonization was ever paramount in his thoughts. A SPANISH GALLEON OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. And how crowded with extraordinary activities by this most versatile of the Elizabethan men these years were, the record of his greater achievements, mostly chronicled in the Principal Navigations, shows. What he had done up to the time of White’s abandonment of the search for the Lost Colony in 1590 we have seen. In 1591 he was the organizer of a fleet for service against Spain’s American possessions, and was appointed second in command under Lord Thomas Howard. But the queen refusing to let him go out, his cousin Sir Richard Grenville was appointed in his place; and with this expedition Sir Richard’s career closed, he being wounded to death when off the Azores, the last of August, in one of the most stubborn and desperate sea-fights of naval history. The next year, 1592, Raleigh promoted the privateering expedition under Frobisher and Burroughs which captured, among other prizes in the West Indies, the “Madre de Dios,” greatest of the Spanish treasure-ships then afloat. It was in this year, in July, that he was disgraced and sent to the Tower, but in October, when the privateers had returned with their rich prize, the queen, who had the largest share in this privateering venture, released him, since he alone could superintend the division of the plunder. In 1593 he matured a plan for a voyage to the “Empire of Guiana” and the fabled “El Dorado,” the “citie of gold,” in the unexplored northwestern part of South America, of which the natives had told Spanish travellers, with mines far excelling those of Peru. In 1594, in accordance with this plan, he sent out a preliminary expedition, under an experienced navigator, Captain Jacob Whiddon, to explore the coast contiguous to the great River Orinoco, and also the river with its tributaries, above which “El Dorado,” or “Manoa” as called by the Indians, was 383supposed to lie. In 1595 he sailed himself for Guiana at the head of a fleet of five ships and a company of one hundred officers, soldiers, and gentlemen adventurers. By a perilous voyage in small boats he succeeded in penetrating the Orinoco far up to the mouth of the Caroni, and the latter river to impassable falls, yet two hundred miles short, as it was reckoned, of the “citie of gold.” Upon his return to England in the summer, with some specimens of ore which he had picked up along the way, and the son of a local king as a pledge of friendship against his next coming, he prepared, maybe with Hakluyt’s assistance, a glowing account of this voyage, embellished with the tales that had been told him of the wonders of the region besides its richness in mines: among them, the “Amazons,” a warlike race of great women, and the “Ewaipanoma,” a headless nation, whose eyes were in their shoulders and their mouths in the middle of their breasts, and who wore “a long train of hair growing backward between the shoulders.” And when this story was printed, under the inviting title, “The Discouerie of the large, rich, and beautifull Empire of Guiana, with a relation of the great and golden citie of Manoa, which the Spaniards call El Dorado,” it was eagerly read and heightened his reputation. In 1596 he sent out Captain Laurence Keymis, a companion of his first voyage, with two well-equipped ships to renew the exploration of the Orinoco, especially with a view to planting an English colony in the region. Keymis returned in June with a report that confirmed Raleigh’s belief in its great mineral 384wealth. But at this juncture Raleigh was engrossed in a venture nearer home for checkmating Spain’s move of a second “Armada” against England. He was now united with Howard and the Earl of Essex in command of a fleet to attack Cadiz. With the ship “Warspite” he led the van in the great fight of June twenty-one which resulted in the destruction of the fleet intended for the descent upon England, and the capture of the city. Later, the same year, he despatched one of the smaller ships that had been in the Cadiz fight to Guiana, but this voyage had no important result. In 1597 he sailed as second in command with Essex in an expedition to strike another blow against Spain, and this was effectively done with the capture of Fayal. In 1598 his scheme of colonization in the fertile valley of the Orinoco had developed, and he planned to send out a colony. But for some reason not known the enterprise was abandoned. In 1600 he added to his several offices that of Governor of Jersey. In 1602 he despatched his fifth expedition for the relief of the “Virginia” colony. This expedition was put in charge of Captain Samuel Mace, an excellent mariner, who had already made two voyages to “Virginia.” He returned unsuccessful and Raleigh planned to send him out again. Raleigh could not, however, do any more at his personal cost alone. He had now exhausted his own means in the undertaking which, as Hakluyt wrote, “required a prince’s purse to have it thoroughly followed out.” He had renewed his endeavours to bring the privy council into his scheme, but without success. Elizabeth’s end was approaching and her ministers were busy with their personal affairs, manœuvring for their own advancement with her successor on the throne. Notwithstanding his failure to find support his splendid hope for his “Virginia” was not crushed. On the eve of his own downfall, which came swift upon the accession of James, he had written, “I shall yet live to see it an English Nation.” This faith he carried with him to the Tower of London, into which James thrust him in December, 1603, under sentence of death on a trumped-up charge of treason; and while in durance here he saw his cherished hopes realized through Richard Hakluyt’s efforts. In 1605 Hakluyt brought his arguments to bear upon various men of condition, friendly to colonization, to induce them to join in a petition for patents for the establishment of two plantations on the coast of North America. The issue of this petition was James’s charter bearing date of April tenth, 1606, by which the two companies, subsequently designated the London and the Plymouth Companies, were created, between whom were divided in nearly equal parts the vast territory then known as Virginia, stretching from Cape Fear to Halifax, and back a hundred miles inland: the company occupying the southern part to be called the “First Colony of Virginia” and that occupying the northern part, the “Second Colony of Virginia.” Sir Thomas Gates, Sir George Somers, Richard Hakluyt, and Edward Maria Wingfield, as patentees, were the chief adventurers in the London or South Virginia Company. Ten of the nineteen adventurers styled merchants, remaining in England, at the establishment of the corporation of “The Governour and Assistants of the Citie of Ralegh in Virginia” became subscribers to the South Virginia Company. Sir Thomas Smith, chief among the nineteen merchants, was made their first treasurer. Just a year after the issue of the patent their “First Colony of Virginia,” sailing from England in December, 1606, arrived out at Chesapeake Bay, the region which Ralph Lane had determined as the fitter place than Roanoke for settlement, and in which Raleigh had directed White with the Second—the Lost—Colony to plant, as they would have done had Captain Ferdinando been true to them. And in May, 1607, the permanent settlement here was at last begun as Jamestown. Raleigh was condemned to be executed on the eleventh of December, 1603, but the day before he was reprieved, and he was held a prisoner in the Tower, with this unjust sentence hanging over his head, for thirteen dismal years. During this cruel imprisonment his great talents were occupied in philosophic and literary work, and he wrote out his notable Historie of the World. Meanwhile his statesmanlike interest in the developing American colony continued constant and keen. At one time he sought release for a visit to Virginia, promising to bring the king rich returns therefrom. At length, in 1616, James liberated him for the purpose of making another expedition to Guiana upon his pledge to find the fabulous gold mine or else bear all the expenses of the undertaking. Thus at liberty, while making his preparations for this voyage, he was enabled to see Pocahontas from Virginia, who was in England that year. He sailed on his forlorn hope in June, 1617, with a fleet of fourteen ships and four hundred men, accompanied by his son Walter, and his faithful friend Captain Keymis. The expedition was a tragic failure, for his plans were betrayed to the court at Madrid, through the Spanish ambassador, under whose influence James had fallen, and immediate steps were taken to thwart them. The fleet were attacked by the Spaniards at a new Spanish settlement on the Orinoco, and in the fight that ensued young Raleigh was killed. Sir Walter himself had been detained at Trinidad, sick with a violent fever, and when the report of this disaster with the loss of his beloved son was brought to him, his stout heart was broken. Upon his return to England he was rearrested at the representation of the Spanish ambassador, on a charge of breaking the peace with Spain. Again he was thrust into the Tower. Trial was denied him, and the truculent James, at the behest of the king of Spain, now ordered his execution, finding a legal cover for this judicial murder in the original sentence of 1603. He was brought before the Court of King’s Bench on the twenty-eighth of October, 1618, and the next morning was beheaded on Tower Hill, meeting death with great fortitude. “Prythie, let me see the axe, dost thou think, man, I am afraid of it?” he asked 388of the executioner; “a sharp medicine, but a sound cure for all diseases.” In St. Margaret’s Church, Westminster, is the beautiful Raleigh Window, the gift of Americans, with this inscription from the pen of James Russell Lowell: “The New World’s sons, from England’s breasts we drew Such milk as bids remember whence we came; Proud of her Past, wherefrom our Present grew, This Window we inscribe with Raleigh’s name.” Hakluyt’s monument is the Hakluyt Society, worthy among historical institutions, in the membership of which Americans are united with Englishmen, founded in England in the first half of the nineteenth century, in a manner to continue Hakluyt’s work through the printing of hitherto unpublished or rare accounts of voyages and travels, so to open an easier way to a branch of knowledge which, as the founders truly say, “yields to none in importance and is superior to most in agreeable variety.” The End About HackerNoon Book Series: We bring you the most important technical, scientific, and insightful public domain books. It keeps this beast fed by regularly crawling the web and by attracting a steady stream of user content including the world’s email, videos, geolocation data, and much much more data. . estimated By one estimate, at least an exabyte It is practically impossible for a mere AI compute function to overcome Alphabet’s massive advantages from its installed base. Unless Google fumbles. Highly unlikely. ChatGPT has a different sort of compute challenge resulting in a different architecture. This keeps it from being an immediate threat to Google. It is predicated on large scale linear algebra operations and can get by with a much smaller data set. Furthermore, the corpus it learns, as opposed to what it searches, is fixed. Searchwise, that’s a fatal limitation. While ChatGPT can search for more recent information about the pandemic, GPT3 knows nothing about  COVID-19. It was trained on a pre pandemic corpus. This prevents it from playing David to Google’s Goliath. AI interfaces, indeed, could create a threat to attracting a stream of user content. That is the case, however, only if the purveyors of LLM-based interfaces, like OpenAI, are already prepared to store, safeguard, and monetize that data. Currently none are so prepared. Furthermore, these programs give no particular advantage to finding data in the middle of a video or detecting piracy of video content.  Remember, Alphabet, Google’s parent, owns YouTube, the Fort Knox of video. #The future of search There are new approaches on the horizon to expanding what is searchable. These almost certainly will prove of great value for accessing the many specialist data repositories that are currently effectively unsearchable by Google’s search engine. GitHub, the go to repository of software code, is a great example. Even if there are in the world, that’s a tiny drop in the bucket of the world’s online population. 30M programmers and software developers Yet, software developers, on average, control vastly more deployable capital than the average citizen of planet Earth. This is not necessarily through their personal wealth. They exercise their market power  through their collective influence on their clients and employers. As such, they, their clients and employers are more able and more willing to pay for expanded capacity to search repositories like GitHub, which is currently only searchable via metadata and social means. Code is opaque to automated investigation of its structure and behavior. There are even fewer biologists and chemists actively involved in drug development. That said, they very likely control even more deployable capital than software developers (on average). Companies like Pfizer, Lily, Merck, and AstraZeneca have enormous capital. They are even more able, and certainly willing, to pay for expanded search capabilities. They are especially keen because it is significantly less expensive to run a computer search than it is to run a physical assay. The potential of the Kyoto Genes and Genomics database, for example, is largely untapped because we cannot see into the dynamics of the data stored there. That’s a spectacularly valuable niche application.  It is, however, irrelevant to the vast majority of rank-and-file web-searchers who vastly outnumber data specialists. For the foreseeable future, the expansion of search will not be in consumer markets. It will be in technical specialist, government, and enterprise markets. One of the first things specialists (like the lead author here) do is to test ChatGPT on common sense reasoning over specialist data sets. Supposedly, this will be due to developments of decentralizing technologies, such as blockchain. Indeed, the co-author’s review of Life After Google suggested that innovation rather than regulation is a better way of domesticating big data. Life After Google However, we can’t look to LLMs as the relevant innovation. While the computer architectures of LLMs and other similar AI-based approaches are not the same as Google’s, they are still massively centralized and run counter to the decentralizing trend. They may yet extend the life of centralized big data, until scalable decentralizing technologies, now on the horizon, come to fruition. Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (Google’s holding company),  Meta (Facebook’s holding company), and Microsoft today are the Masters of the Digital Universe. That won’t last. The great lock down has helped to slow the spread of Covid-19. But it also came at a great cost to the global economy. Unlike a recession, many nonessential businesses have been closed with no clear timetable to reopen. The initial jobless claims in the US have swelled to more than 26 million since mid-March. While we see some glimmers of hope, we are not out of the woods yet. Businesses are anxious to reopen but we are also concerned with the health risks associated with it. The dilemma is if we reopen too quickly, we might risk triggering a second wave of Coronavirus which could be even worse. For everyone to feel safe about reopening the economy, what we really need is one or more vaccines that are safe and broadly available. Scientists around the world are working frantically to find a cure to fight the Coronavirus. This is probably not going to happen for at least another nine months. The debate is raging over how long the U.S. economy should stay closed to contain Covid-19. On one side, we have the business community and workers who lost their jobs; on the other side, we have the healthcare workers with the highest risk of getting infected by Covid-19. For many of the healthcare workers working in the front line fighting against Coronavirus to save lives, they will probably echo the same sentiment expressed by a counter protester against premature reopening below. “They just think it’s a free-for-all, and I’m going in for $16.50 an hour, risking my life,” said Kelly Lepage, an emergency room tech who graduates nursing school in just a couple weeks. “ ,” Lepage said. “ hands. Except for countries like Singapore and Taiwan, many countries have been playing catch up on Covid-19. Singapore and Taiwan have proven to the world that they can improve the economy without sacrificing public health. How did they do it? They wear face masks and practice social distancing religiously. Protect Yourself and Protect Others Policymakers have been stressing the need for large-scale “testing and tracing” to successfully reopen, and how hard it will be to implement these practices at scale anytime soon. What they overlooked is whether the public has enough personal protective gear to protect themselves from the Covid-19 virus. Face masks likely “played an active role in slowing down the disease transmission in Asian countries like Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. It is an important component of containing the Covid-19 outbreak, and as a responsible citizen and a signal of support to health-care workers. Even CDC has reversed itself and is now recommending the use of cloth face coverings to help slow the spread of Covid-19. Wearing a mask is not just for protecting people from getting infected, but also prevent people with Covid-19 from infecting others. Keeping Your Distance to Stay Safe Until we find a vaccine, we still need to continue some physical distancing between individuals for the foreseeable future. Businesses that need in person attendance should have clear guidelines for their employees on how to maintain social distancing at work. In addition, employers should be required to provide protective gears to all employees coming to work in person e.g. two face masks per employee everyday. Restaurants will have to reduce their capacity to meet the social distancing requirement to protect the diners. As a result, their cost of doing business will be higher. Even if customers are coming back, many companies might not be able to afford to keep the business running at a loss for too long. With increasing data sizes and the availability of multivariate dynamic data, there is a growing need for scalable and extensible tools for visualization and interactive exploration. We describe pyParaOcean, a visualization system that supports several tasks routinely used in the visual analysis of ocean data. The system is available as a plugin to Paraview and is hence able to leverage its distributed computing capabilities and its rich set of generic analysis and visualization functionalities. pyParaOcean provides modules to support different visual analysis tasks specific to ocean data, such as eddy identification and salinity movement tracking. These modules are available as Paraview filters and this seamless integration results in a system that is easy to install and use. A case study on the Bay of Bengal illustrates the utility of the system for the study of ocean phenomena and processes. 1. Mesoscale eddies, that span from tens to hundreds of kilometers in diameter and have a lifespan that can range from days to months [RR10], are ubiquitous in the oceans. They play a big role in transporting heat and mass within the oceans [McW08]. They also have a big impact on the ecology of the ocean and on the biogeochemical processes [MJD∗ 99,BNBD∗ 07]. With the strides in collection and generation of ocean data [FD06, Ros89], there is a need for tools that support effective visualization of the data, and are scalable to keep pace with the ever expanding resolutions and sizes of ocean datasets. 1.1. Related work Visualization in oceanography is a challenging area of research due to the rapidly increasing size of data, the heterogeneity and multivariate nature of the data, and the inherent complexity of the ocean phenomena. The use of general purpose analysis and visualization software such as Matlab, Tecplot, AVS, and Paraview is prevalent in the community. However, oceanographers often use tools developed specifically for ocean data, such as Ferret [Fer23], pyFerret [pyF23], and Copernicus MyOcean [myO23]. These specialized tools provide multiple functionalities and produce 2D views of the data. A few software frameworks developed within the visualization community provide 2D and 3D data visualization capabilities. COVE [GSK∗ 08] is a collaborative ocean visualization environment that supports interactive analysis of ocean models over the web. RedSeaAtlas [AGT∗ 19] supports the selection of regions in a 2D map and provides exploratory views of winds, waves, tides, chlorophyll, etc. over the Red Sea. OceanPaths [NL15] is a multivariate data visualization tool that computes pathways tracing ocean currents and supports the plotting of different high-dimensional data along the pathways. This enables the study of correlations between different oceanographic features. An oceanographer’s analysis workflow includes a few common tasks [GSK∗ 08] such as inspection of temperature and salinity distributions and vertical cross sections, compare recently measured salinity data against model data, inspect and analyze current vorticities and circulation based on flow data, and analyze extreme events. Isosurfaces and volume rendering are natural choices for visualization of 3D temperature and salinity distributions [DAN12, PBI04]. However, visualization of the dynamically changing distributions is a challenge. VAPOR [LJP∗ 19] is one of the few tools that provides efficient 3D visualization for oceanography and atmospheric science applications. The VAPOR data collection (VDC) data model supports interactive visual analysis of large data sizes on modern GPUs and commodity hardware. Xie et al. [XLWD19] and Afzal et al. [AHG∗ 19] present surveys of visual analysis methods and tools developed for ocean data. Xie et al. classify the visual analysis tasks into four categories, namely study of different environmental variables, ocean phenomena identification and tracking, discovery of patterns and correlations, and visualization of ensembles and uncertainty. Further, they identify different opportunities and unexplored areas for future work including efficient and scalable methods for data processing and management, identification of features at multiple scales, and immersive platforms. While we recognize the availability of several methods for oceanography visualization, we note that they are often standalone solutions. We aim to leverage the extensive advancement in visualization technology as implemented in Paraview while providing functionalities and views that are specific to ocean data. 1.2. Contributions We present pyParaOcean, a system for interactive exploration and visual analysis of ocean data. The system leverages the power of Paraview [AGL05] to enable scalable visualizations of data available from ocean models while supporting a multitude of tasks and functionalities that are specialized for oceanography. The visualization capabilities of pyParaOcean are available via a seamless integration into Paraview using plugins. Key features of the system include • 3D field visualization to study salinity and temperature distribution with support to display and explore dynamically evolving isovolumes. • Ocean current visualization with a support for different seeding strategies for streamlines and pathlines. • Vertical section views and parallel coordinates plot that support interactive selection and slicing of the data. • Identification and tracking of salinity movement via extraction of surface fronts. • Visualization and tracking of eddy features. • An extensible design that supports incorporation of new functionalities as filters in Paraview. We present the results of an exploration of the Bay of Bengal, performed in collaboration with an oceanographer, as a case study to demonstrate the utility of the system. [AHG∗ 19] present surveys of visual analysis methods and tools developed for ocean data. Xie et al. classify the visual analysis tasks into four categories, namely study of different environmental variables, ocean phenomena identification and tracking, discovery of patterns and correlations, and visualization of ensembles and uncertainty. Further, they identify different opportunities and unexplored areas for future work including efficient and scalable methods for data processing and management, identification of features at multiple scales, and immersive platforms. While we recognize the availability of several methods for oceanography visualization, we note that they are often standalone solutions. We aim to leverage the extensive advancement in visualization technology as implemented in Paraview while providing functionalities and views that are specific to ocean data. 1.2. Contributions We present pyParaOcean, a system for interactive exploration and visual analysis of ocean data. The system leverages the power of Paraview [AGL05] to enable scalable visualizations of data available from ocean models while supporting a multitude of tasks and functionalities that are specialized for oceanography. The visualization capabilities of pyParaOcean are available via a seamless integration into Paraview using plugins. Key features of the system include • 3D field visualization to study salinity and temperature distribution with support to display and explore dynamically evolving isovolumes. • Ocean current visualization with a support for different seeding strategies for streamlines and pathlines. • Vertical section views and parallel coordinates plot that support interactive selection and slicing of the data. • Identification and tracking of salinity movement via extraction of surface fronts. • Visualization and tracking of eddy features. • An extensible design that supports incorporation of new functionalities as filters in Paraview. We present the results of an exploration of the Bay of Bengal, performed in collaboration with an oceanographer, as a case study to demonstrate the utility of the system.
