That decision had health repercussions for ordinary Americans, who are left to carry the burden. (Even still, inspectors found asbestos on the floor and covering equipment in 2011, records show.) The letter, which included a request for a meeting, was signed by three members of the public health association’s leadership team: Angela Laramie, an epidemiologist with expertise in occupational health; Celeste Monforton, a lecturer in public health at Texas State University who previously worked for OSHA; and Mary Miller, an occupational health nurse who retired from the Washington state Department of Labor and Industries. OSHA told ProPublica it was reviewing the correspondence but declined to comment further on its content. After this story was published, the agency provided the following statement: “Health and safety are OSHA’s top concern, and we are focused on improving our efforts and looking at ways to protect workers from occupational exposure to asbestos moving forward.” OxyChem has repeatedly said it complies with federal regulations. “Dating back to the early 1970s, there have been no violations issued by OSHA related to our handling and use of asbestos in any of our chlor-alkali production operations,” the company said in a statement, which it has provided to ProPublica several times. Olin has not returned calls or emails from ProPublica. Jordan Barab, a former deputy assistant secretary of labor, said it was unlikely OSHA would remove certain chlorine plants from the Star Program strictly because they use asbestos-dependent technology. “There are a lot of companies that handle dangerous materials,” he said. But Barab said OSHA had the power to drop in on plants where workers had complained or even develop a special program to look at hazards specific to the chlorine industry. “OSHA should be looking at these (plants), without a doubt,” he said. “They should have been doing it before, but especially now.” , an Oregon Democrat who has been working on legislation that would ban asbestos, echoed that sentiment. “None of this is a one-off safety lapse,” he said in a statement. As a marketer, I know that thinking — let alone talking — about aspects of branding and how to manage a brand identity successfully, can get a little muddy, and remain somewhat superficial. What are the first things that usually come to mind when we think or talk about branding and brands? It was gifted to me by my friend and mentor Roel Stavorinus, Corporate Identity guru and one of the Netherlands’ first official register marketers, who was in turn inspired by Olins. The Brand Handbook The multi-award-winning (December 19th 1930–April 14th 2014) was one of the world’s most respected and experienced practitioners of corporate identity and branding. He co-founded Wolff Olins and Saffron Brand Consultants and served as their chairman. Wally Olins Olins advised many of the world’s leading organizations on identity, branding, communication and related matters including 3i, Akzo Nobel, Repsol, Q8, The Portuguese Tourist Board, BT, Renault, Volkswagen, Tata and Lloyd’s of London. He acted as an advisor both to McKinsey and Bain. The Brand Handbook and the idea behind the brand In his seminal “The Brand Handbook” Olins explains with concise penmanship what brands are, how to create them, how to make them work, and how to sustain them. At the core of the brand, he writes, are a clear identity and mission. Olins: “The fundamental idea behind the is that in everything the organization does, everything it owns, and everything it produces it should project . The most significant way in which this can be done is by making everything in and around the organization — its — and performance and, where this is appropriate, ” brand a clear idea of what it is and what its aims are products, environment, communication and behavior consistent in purpose in appearance too. Note how “appearance” comes last, here. The importance of purpose and consistency in branding Olins underlines the importance of working from the inside out when it comes to brand, purpose, and consistency: “Outward consistency of this kind will only be achieved, and for that matter is only appropriate if it is the manifestation of an inward consistency — a consistency of purpose. This consistency of purpose derives from the vision, or the core idea, and is almost always the base from which a successful branding program(me) can be developed. The . It is what the organization is about, what it stands for, what it believes in. All organizations are unique even if the products/services they make are more or less the same as those of their competitors. It is the company’s history, structure, strategy, the personalities who have created and driven it forward, its successes and its failures, that shape it and make it what it is.” core idea drives the organization The rightful place of the visual elements of a brand We are now starting to see the picture. are important, but they’re not at the core of what makes a brand. What is the correct placing in terms of importance, of the visual brand elements? Visual brand elements Firstly, what visual elements are we talking about? Visual elements can be construed as the visible and/or tangible things like colors, typefaces or fonts, taglines or slogans — the ‘look and feel’. This can also incorporate what a product or store smells like, or how a brand experience might sound — as in Gary Vaynerchuk’s “Sonic Branding”. According to Olins out of all the visual elements, the logo or symbol is the prime identifier for almost all brands, its purpose being to “present the core idea of the organization with impact, brevity and immediacy.” “The logo encapsulates the brand.” Together with the core idea, the visual elements mark out the brand territory. Expanding on these two core elements and clarifying the relation between them, Olins further introduces the four vectors through which a brand makes itself tangible. The four brand vectors In his “Brand Handbook” Olins describes the fundamental idea that there are four vectors through which a brand — as defined by its core idea and surface, visual elements — manifests itself. These four vectors are Product, Environment, Communication, and Behavior. — stands for the products/services the organization sells, how they look and feel, and what the User Experience is for these. Product — the physical and digital environment of the brand, how it “lays out its stall”. What does your store or your LinkedIn company page look like? Environment — how it tells people, every audience, about itself and what it’s doing — think, internal and external communications, storytelling, content strategy, copywriting and general tone of voice. Communication — how its people behave to each other and the world outside — think HR policy & processes, leadership and organizational culture, but also recruitment, sales professionals, marketers, and customer service representatives. Behavior The six elements of a successful brand At the core, as you can see the first and quintessential part or element of a brand is its core idea; , mission, and vision. your organization’s purpose The second element would be the visual brand, which is not a “loose” element but one that is ideally derived from the “core idea”, and at almost every step mixed in with the four vectors through which a brand makes itself tangible. You could add the visual brand as an added layer over the graph above, as a way to visualize its place as the second – or maybe, rather, sixth – element of a brand. Think about the colors and/or maybe a logo used in the design of a Product; the brick-and-mortar storefront or conversely the website (Environment); the taglines or slogans — but also colors, layouts, etc.) used consistently in e-mails or campaigns (Communication), and your company logo on the shirt of the customer service representative who just made your customer ‘s day (Behavior). The main goal is to keep finding ways to communicate the core idea of the brand in everything you do. And conversely, to check everything you do with the core idea of your company. I find that these two core elements and four vectors – for a total of six brand elements - make it infinitely easier to think and talk about brand and brand identity, because they help us do it in a structured way. They can also be used as a basis for brand strategy and they are the six elements that you need to at least think about when thinking about creating and managing a successful brand. How to manage a brand successfully Brand management is undoubtedly handled best with a strategic long-term plan, which would be an entire article – if not an entire book - in and of itself. 3LAU doing his thang at Royale Boston I was introduced to Justin Blau through a mutual friend who told me about his vision of making music events a better experience for the fans by tokenizing them. My first response was to roll my eyes and say, “Here we go,” and wrote him off as just another dude trying to cash in on Crypto mania. I did some research on Justin and realized that he is a renowned DJ and producer who has worked with many A list musicians and currently tours around the world. My curiosity got the best of me and we scheduled a phone call to discuss his event. Before we talked I jotted down all kinds of questions, and my goal was to test him and try and shoot holes in plans. I am very skeptical of token schemes and I promised myself to be hard on him. Justin and I finally got on a call and we talked for over an hour. I pressed him on many points as he walked me through the who, what, where and how his events would work. Justin never balked, and his sincerity for wanting to make music festivals more fan friendly is what hit home with me. I told him I was interested in doing an interview, but this would not be a fluffy PR piece. I explained to him that many would be critical of the idea, and this interview would be a great opportunity to respond to people questioning his motives. Justin and I stayed in contact via text over the last few months while he was jet setting around the world on tour, and we managed to put this interview together. During this process my respect for him grew, and I can assure you is he is a very grounded and humble guy for being so acclaimed. In the meantime, Justin and his team have been hard at work planning to launch the premier Our Music Festival (OMF) event in San Francisco on October 20th. The headliners are no joke with Zedd, Big Sean, Matt and Kim and of course 3LAU a.k.a. Justin, along with a lineup of other solid musicians. A couple of these mashups took off on music blogs, and before I knew it, I was getting requests to play college campuses all over the US. Everyone from Ariana Grande to Katy Perry; before they were some of the biggest in the game, The Chainsmokers actually opened for me on tour :) What is it like touring the world as a DJ? It’s not as glamorous as anyone would expect. Making music, and playing shows are two huge passions of mine. What is the biggest show you have ever played? Explain what it is and what you would like to accomplish? Our goal with OMF is to give fans more power over their festival experiences, rewarding them for their involvement and encouraging them to give back to the ecosystem by telling friends and providing feedback Where is OMF based out of? In year one, OMF will take place at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. We hope to expand all around the world in the next three years with targets in Barcelona, Seoul & Tokyo! Who else is involved in OMF and why do you think it will be successful? I’m lucky to have such an incredible team of music industry leaders, successful entrepreneurs, and tech experts. From my co-founder Adam, to some of our incredible advisors like the founders of Origin Protocol, I think we’re poised to make serious waves in both the music industry and the blockchain space. Many people will scratch their heads when they hear about this and ask why do music events need to be on a blockchain? There are thre primary applications we’re exploring. First is ticketing; collapsing primary & secondary markets with a more transparent means of access transfer / price discover. The entire concept of a “ticket” will shift towards digital assets that enable access, we want to be a part of that journey. Second, fan engagement & loyalty are both increasingly difficult for experience creators to secure. By incentivizing fans to engage more deeply with festival ecosystems, OMF will disintermediate the festival business and cut middlemen that are profiting from arbitrary fees and useless marketing campaigns that fail to engage end-users. Ideally that combats ticket inflation and decentralizes promotional efforts for events. Finally, OMF aims to compensate fans fairly for contributing data, and opting in to share personal information. Most other participants in festival ecosystems have no access to that data, including artists like myself that ultimately drive traffic to live music experiences in the first place. We ultimately want to build a protocol for all events to tokenize, and engage fans at a deeper level. Our branded events will function as pilots for the tech we build, as we build it! In the long term, our vision is to have the fans vote for the artists on the lineup; we cannot wait till we get there! Do you feel the blockchain is an overused buzzword? Yes, and no. It’s definitely the go-to term to describe this giant revolution that humanity is still learning about, but it’s difficult to succinctly characterize this new industry with any other term. It’s a crutch, but necessary in conversation :) What kind of funding have you raised privately to build the back end infrastructure to launch OMF? We started with 1m, and we’re over 2x committed for our strategic round of 3m. This current round is reserved for long term partners who we believe can build the OMF story & provide both labor and capital resources to ensure the success of the project. The next round will be a 12m soft cap 15m hard cap round. In ICO terms, these are small numbers, but it’s more important to our team to protect investors & fairly value the nature of what we’re building. In the long term, we believe that’s key to our success. Just 3LAU tours the world and his home is entertaining sold out venues. Many people might call OMF token a marketing ploy. What’s your response to that? I would just tell someone to check out our all-star team, read our materials, and ask questions. Everyone on the OMF team is happy to answer. How will you differentiate OMF from the long list of scammers trying to make a quick buck off developing a shit coin or token? Our goal is to be as transparent as possible. We aren’t raising money from the public until we know that we’re building completely functional tech. Our #1 priority is the fan experience. You are building OMF token on Ethereum. Why have you chosen Ethereum versus Bitcoin or using other options? We are exploring every option currently. We are primarily using ETH as a means of raising funds, since it has become the industry standard for ICOs, and it’s familiar to investors! Take us through how OMF token will be used by fans at your events? It’s easiest to think of OMF utility tokens like SkyMiles, but that are limited in quantity and have multifaceted functionality. Fans will be able to earn tokens by participating in the festival ecosystem as explained in the previous Fan Incentive Mechanisms section of this paper. The more tokens a fan earns, the higher status they earn within the network, representing their contribution to the network’s success. Simultaneously, tokens earned will be redeemable for tickets, merch, food & beverage at heavily discounted rates; they will also be redeemable for exclusive experiences like artist meet & greets, backstage tours, VIP upgrades, and other elements of festivals that are currently inaccessible to members of the music festival community. How will music fans purchase OMF tokens? The public will not be able to purchase OMF tokens directly until more clarity from the SEC is given on utility token frameworks. We are exploring compliant airdrops to enable fans to start earning OMF as quickly as possible, without necessarily purchasing it directly. Will the OMF token be listed on exchanges? If so, which ones? Unfortunately cannot give more detail here due to regulation, it’s a very unfortunate circumstance. What type of regulatory challenges is OMF up against? Many. That’s why I focused the first six months of this project on compliance measures and corporate structure. I look forward to sharing a lot of my documents with the public down the road! When and where will the first OMF event take place? The first OMF will occur in the bay area on October 20th! Zedd is our first artist on the lineup, but of course I’ll be playing too. We can’t wait to announce the rest of the artists soon, and we’ll be selling tickets ASAP. Describe what fans can expect? In year one, we’re enabling crypto-payments for tickets, and everyone who joins the festival will receive an ETH paper wallet, which we can airdrop to in the future. As our app is developed, fans will be able to import that wallet & we’ll be adding features over time. What artists have signed on to perform? We’ll be announcing our list of artist ambassadors very soon! Will all attendees be forced to use OMF token to buy tickets? Definitely not, our goal is to create a hybridized system that gives all consumers access, that’s the key to fueling mainstream adoption of crypto, on a macro-level. What if they don’t want to? They’ll be able to use fiat, ETH, BTC + more. Will fans be able to buy merchandise and music with OMF token? In year one, we might face network issues, but in year two we hope to enable OMF purchases for all kinds of products and services in the festival ecosystem. Are you afraid this concept might be over the heads of the masses? Ideally we can build a beautiful UI & create simple, educational content to bring the masses to our platform. Thankfully, our founders and advisors have some serious reach. What other technical hurdles do you foresee? There are obvious network / scaling issues for blockchain ticketing. We also have to make sure that festival internet can handle the load. How will fans hold their OMF tokens and what incentive will there be for doing so? There will be multiple staking incentives to access VIP upgrades, early access to tickets, meet & greets + more. The exact incentive structure is still in development. What type of response have you received from the music industry? So far the response has been incredible, the six agent advisors to our project make up some of the most powerful leaders in the live music business. We’re excited to keep expanding our music team as well! What is your end goal with OMF? The end goal is to give fans more control over the experiences they love and look forward to on a daily basis. Disintermediating the music industry as a whole is essential for it to grow, but it’s great to start with the festival business, which attracts so many people, with different tastes, across the globe! The tools of the trade for a boss DJ What is your relationship with the Winklevoss twins? I credit the twins with the reason why I entered the space in the first place. I met them while they were building Gemini, and became intrigued with the potential of cryptocurrencies immediately. I didn’t take the deeper dive until mid-2017 when markets sparked unprecedented upward momentum. Are they down to help and support you? The twins were helpful in pointing me in the correct legal direction for the project. They cautioned moving too quickly without having the proper legal team in place. I’m thankful they encouraged me to double check all of my work. What is your prediction for Bitcoin in 5–10–20 years? I truly believe that we’ll see substantial price appreciation once institutions begin to explore the space. Until then, we’re at the whim of uncertain regulation and constant scamming. The First Crypto Powered Music Festival: Interview with OMF Co-Founder Justin Blau

Originally Published in November of 2016 on ’s Blog Daily The first thing I’ll say is that none of this is prescriptive. I do not believe that there is a certain way or track that anyone should follow to guide their career choices. Second, I’d add that I’ve gotten incredibly lucky being able to talk to and work with amazing people that are willing to take irrational, yet life changing chances on me and my life. When I first came to college, my goal was pretty straightforward: grow as much as possible. I also wanted to make sure I was happy, healthy, and having fun. If I could do all of those things at once, I figured I would be in an incredible place, no matter where I ended up. Since that first day on campus about a year and a half ago, those goals have remained constant. The only things that have changed are the tactical steps I have taken to try and get to them. There are so many different ways to go about growth. You can sign up for extra challenging classes, join or start a club, build a company, become more social, learn a skill, the possibilities are endless. For some reason or another, I have always found that I grew best in challenging environments where I could make a serious impact. Simply put, I wanted to work on interesting problems that I could make a difference in. I have generally hated being a cog. Generally hate being the norm. So I strayed away from the means in hopes of finding an opportunity towards the ends. What I wanted to do was really become an outlier and have an incredible amount of growth over these next four years. To do this, I made an assumption: I needed to start working in the real world, today. Was this the right assumption? I am not sure. But I went for it. Specifically, I knew I wanted to work with startups and investors, with teams interested in building something new. So I started building relationships with former strangers outside of my school and community. I built one of those linkedin things and started reaching out to people that I thought I could provide value to while having an interesting conversation. Most people never responded. But I did not have the time or energy to worry about those unread messages. Instead, to this day, I am always grateful for those individuals that for some reason not only opened a message from a random 18 year old, but also took the time to make an investment in me. The first “success” I had was via linkedin message. I had outreached to a general partner at a venture capital firm. It was one of the biggest and most successful venture capital firms in the midwest. I had always been interested in VC, growing things, and tech companies. This was a great mix. And so, I and my meek linkedin profile reached out: Hi, My name is Jordan Gonen and I am a current student in Olin at WashU. I came across your profile and was very interested in your past experiences working at x, x, and now with Name of VC Firm here in St. Louis. As a student very interested in the startup world, I was wondering if you had some time over the next couple of weeks to briefly talk about your background as well as advice you have for a current student looking for opportunities in the business sector for the future. If you could, please send over a couple of times that work for you and I will definitely make them work! Best, Jordan Gonen He responded to my linkedin message, we met, and I got the lucky opportunity of getting my very first internship to be in venture capital. A big lesson I learned here: you have to ask for what you want in the real world because no one is going to come by with a magic fairy wand and bestow upon you what you want. As soon as you know what you want, you must go out and get it. I would have never gotten this experience if not for my initiative and outreach. This internship program had previously only been open to upperclassmen and graduate students. If I had applied via conventional application, there is no way I would have stood out. I was 18 years old, just beginning my freshman year of college. Differentiation is often everything, and taking that pro-active step and reaching out was exactly what I needed. I found that I got a lot of satisfaction and accelerant growth from this experience. And so I did what anyone who finds what they like do, I doubled down. I wanted to gain more exposure to the real world and start working on more interesting problems. My next tactical step was to find an operational experience that I could work on remotely. Through outreach via Slack group, I formed a relationship with another person who was had just started building his company over in San Francisco. I had two phone calls with him (I actually screwed up the first one so badly he had to give me another chance) and started providing value where I could (for free). Okay, so it is now the beginning of my second semester of college. I am working remotely for a startup and a venture capital firm; I now needed to find something to do for the summer. That was my next tactical step: find a really compelling internship that would help me grow 10x. At this point, I was also convinced that that internship needed to be in Northern California. I thought that that was really the only way I would accelerate inevitable growth for my career. (this holds not to be true). So I again began this outreach to people that I thought would have interesting things to talk about, and perhaps even an opportunity for me. I probably sent thousands of emails and talked to over 100 people via phone about ‘advice’ for students and how I could be of value to them. _Of all the generic advice I’ve received in my life, “go meet as many people as you can,” is perhaps the most common._medium.com How I went from being a stranger to having a network in Silicon Valley The first thing I’ll note is that much of this was a distraction for me. It was nearly irrational and, looking back, probably in large part unnecessary for me to reach out to all of these people. Instead I could have been working on or building something. But I continued outreach because it was my that this would be the best way to learn and grow. assumption Again, most everyone did not respond. Most people are far too busy to take on requests from random 18 year olds asking to chat for a few minutes. But, once again, I was surprised and amazed by the kindness and giving of some select individuals. Of the many many stories I could tell you, the one that perhaps most helped me was via a simple email. I was not making much progress emailing companies directly, so instead I took a more creative route and started emailing a couple of venture capitalists. I knew that they were connected to many companies and that if I could provide value to them, perhaps they would be able to connect me onwards to someone in their portfolio. Are there any opportunities for students to get involved with what you guys are doing or any of your portfolio companies. Fast forward a few months and, thanks to one person making an investment in talking to me, I received an opportunity to work at a fast growing, Series B, tech company. And it was in San Francisco. This summer was amazing. I not only worked full time for this internship, I also got to help out a few more companies, meet amazing people, and, perhaps most importantly: grow really quickly. It also led to future work. While in SF, I attended startup meetups. At an event hosted by a seed fund, I met . Their goal is to change video conferencing (an interesting coincidence for an intern working remotely). I attended one of their own events — about hardware as a service — and kept in touch.
