Laravel Octane is a high-performance HTTP server built on top of the Laravel framework. It provides a simple, elegant way to scale Laravel applications. Octane uses Swoole or Roadrunner as its underlying engine, so it's able to handle thousands of concurrent connections with ease. There are many benefits to using Octane, such as improved performance, reduced resource usage, and the ability to scale horizontally. However, there are also some caveats to be aware of before using Octane in production. In this article, we'll discuss the opportunities, benefits and caveats of using Laravel Octane to scale a Laravel application. What is Laravel Octane and how does it work? Laravel Octane is a tool that speeds up the serving of Laravel applications. It does this by reducing the amount of time it takes to compile and serve individual requests. It does that by booting your app once and then keeping it in memory to speed up requests faster than ever before. Under the hood, it uses Open Swool, Swool, or Roadrunner to boot the app and serve it. Open Swool or Swool Swoole is a software development kit that enables developers to create high-performance, scalable network applications. Open Swoole is a fork of the Swoole framework, which started in late 2021 because of some disagreement inside the developing community of swoole. Roadrunner RoadRunner is an open-source (MIT licensed) high-performance, serviceable PHP application server that can be used to replace classic Nginx setups with much greater performance and flexibility. It is written in Golang. With Swoole or RoadRunner in place, we now have a worker for each incoming HTTP request. This means that only the first one will bootstrap our Framework (including all service providers) while every other can make use of a ready-to-go worker-instance, which is what makes it so insanely fast! The benefits of using Octane to scale Laravel applications Octane speeds up Laravel applications by caching data and objects in memory. So even with no other alterations to hardware or infrastructure, Laravel Octane can improve the performance of your app by up to 30%. This gain is achieved by eliminating the disk reads, process forks, and other overhead associated that happens when the framework is booted up on every request. That way, Octane can handle thousands of concurrent connections with ease. This makes it ideal for applications that receive a lot of traffic or need to be highly available. On top on that, this cost-effective way can be expected to be liked by any business, start-up or enterprise. In a best-case scenario, you don't even need to make changes to your codebase. But this depends heavily on how your application is structured. Potential caveats of using Laravel Octane If you're thinking of using Octane to scale your Laravel application, there are a few things to be aware of. Octane is not compatible with all Laravel applications. In particular, it doesn't work with applications that use session states or certain types of middleware. Finally, while Octane can improve performance, it won't necessarily solve all your performance problems. If your application is already struggling to keep up with traffic, Octane may not be enough to save it. In that case, you'll need to consider other options, such as horizontal scaling. Necessary refactorings If your application uses session state or certain types of middleware, you'll need to make some changes to your code before you can use Octane. In particular, you'll need to add support for Swoole's coroutine-based sessions and remove any middleware that isn't compatible with Swoole. Octane provides a convenient way to automatically watch your codebase for changes and restart the Octane server without any manual interventions. This means that you can make developments more easily by changing codes in one place instead of having to stop/start an entire application instance each time there's something new in your codebase. Alternatives to Laravel Octane Laravel Octane is a great tool for scaling Laravel applications, but it's not the only option. There are other options available that may be more suitable for your needs. Here are some alternatives to consider: More hardware = more performance Just to mention it, we do not recommend this. This is the easiest, the least cost-effective, and the least future-proof method of scaling: Just throw more hardware performance at your project. This has the obvious downsides of higher running costs, the need to migrate to a different server, and the fact that you are not able to scale on demand with this setup. Nginx Load Balancing with or without AWS To build a scalable web application with Laravel on Amazon Web Services, AWS can be used to automatically scale the app to several instances that share one MySQL database. All of these servers would use one Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS). Scaling with AWS has been around for some time and it works well. But its costs can sometimes not be transparent. Compared to Octane, this goes with the same principle of how it works, but it is not as effective as Octane would be. A benefit is definitely that you can scale your existing code as-is. No Octane-specific changes are needed. Conclusion Laravel Octane is a great way to scale your Laravel application. It's easy to use and can improve performance without needing to make changes to your codebase. However, it's not compatible with all applications and may not be enough to save an already struggling app. If you're considering using Octane, be sure to do your research and consider all your options before making a decision. Scaling Laravel Applications with Octane

Take a moment to think about these questions: Why do we cherish a freebie? Why are we thrilled when we complete our first 10k run? Why are some people keen on answering questions and spending hours writing articles on Wikipedia and Quora for free? Why are you even reading this article? What makes you tick? People do things for a reason. If we look deeper within ourselves and the world around us, we realize that we are all motivated by a myriad of drivers. These drives are what motivate us to act and commit to specific activities. Gamification The first thing that comes to our mind when we think about gamification is leaderboards, points, badges & levels. But the core idea of gamification goes beyond just adding these game elements to a product. It is designing human motivation into a system and placing the customer at the forefront of the design to make the overall synergy with the application, website, or product more seamless. According to Yu-kai Chou, one of the earliest pioneers of gamification, true gamification is when we tap into our core human drives that motivate us towards various decisions and activities. He then drilled down on these different motivations, which led to creating the groundbreaking gamification design framework: Octalysis, an octagon-shaped model bearing eight core drivers. Octalysis Framework Octalysis Framework The is a human-centric gamification design framework to help decipher all the motivational Core Drives that can be used to understand how to engineer and design for motivation within a particular setting and transform activities into meaningful and enriching experiences. Octalysis Framework Chou’s starting premise from within the Octalysis Framework was to maximize the motivation for desired behavioral outcomes through the use of 8 Core Drives (Meaning, Accomplishment, Empowerment, Ownership, Scarcity, Unpredictability, Avoidance). Let’s take a closer look. The 8 Core Drivers Every action we do stems from one or more of these core drivers. Without the presence of at least one of them, we will not be motivated or driven to act. Core Drive 1: Epic Meaning and Calling People like to feel that the work they are doing matters This core drive guides us to seek a higher purpose or meaning beyond our personal goals. It is the drive where the users are motivated as they feel like they are the chosen ones and are participating in something greater than themselves. Contributing for the good of others can be a great motivator. For Example : Wikipedia Stack Overflow The reason why people commit hours contributing to the above platforms is because of this Core Drive 1, where the users embark on the epic journey of making the world a better place by documenting and spreading knowledge. Free Rice Free Rice is a trivia-based website, supports the United Nations World Food Program by raising money to help 10 million people in the world have a meal, and they even made money off advertising while doing it. They did this by creating small challenges for their users. Upon successfully completing a challenge Free Rice donates 10 grains of rice to people in need, playing off a Core Drive concept called “humanity hero.” This is a powerful drive used by big businesses and leaders worldwide, asking you to put ‘the greater good’ above yourself. Apple Think about Apple. They don’t talk about their specs. They talk about “Changing the World,” and you were “The chosen one to make a difference.” Core Drive 2: Development and Accomplishment This drive is internal, as we all are driven to take on challenges to meet our desired goals. The crux here lies in the dimension of challenges since any reward is meaningless without feeling an actual accomplishment. There needs to be an effort, a hurdle that needs to be crossed. It should leave one with a sense of accomplishment as it is what pushes us to work harder to keep developing our skills and see ourselves progress. But not all progressions are intriguing and satisfactory. That’s why Yu-kai Chou underlines the importance of feeling proud of the new status. If there’s no interest in leveling up whatsoever, there won’t be any motivation either. What’s more fulfilling than looking back at the progress you’ve made? Many game elements aim at this core when showing the user their progress. We can find progress bars, badges, status symbols, and leaderboards among these tools. , many eCommerce sites these days make use of progress bars. When a consumer fills out payment details to purchase a product online, a progress bar indicates how far they are from finishing the process. It’s not by chance that this has become a staple for most sites to will their users onto the finish line, i.e., the purchase. For example Apps like such game mechanics as progress bars, badges, etc., to motivate their users to achieve their goals. Duolingo, Goodreads, and Fitbit use LinkedIn In the early days of LinkedIn, users rarely completed their profiles due to poor visual feedback of the progress made (insufficient Core Drive 2). That’s when LinkedIn introduced a profile progress bar, which helped increase the profile completion ratio by a staggering 60%. LinkedIn Progress Bar Core Drive 3: Empowerment of Creativity and Feedback Creation is beauty, all forms of it. We all have it. People need avenues to express themselves, and creativity is one of them. This core drive lets users use their creativity, view their results, get feedback and make adjustments. Here the user is engaged in a creative process where they try different combinations and strategies to get to a particular result. It can be as simple as making a playlist on Spotify or shooting a rainbow and posting it on Instagram. And the instant feedback that the users receive shows them the result of their work so that they can adjust their strategy if needed. Minecraft Minecraft is a classic example of Core Drive 3 because users are given the ability to express creativity by using simple building blocks (with thousands of combinations) to craft complex structures, can immediately taste the result of their choices, and make adjustments as they go. Core Drive 4: Ownership and Possession Everyone likes to own certain things, be it in the real world or in the digital world. The feeling of possessing something rare or expensive makes for a great motivator. In this Core Drive 4, users are motivated because they feel like they own or control something. This makes users want to increase, improve, protect, and even obtain more. It’s why we want to accumulate wealth or collect virtual coins. This Core Drive also provides emotional comfort and instills a sense of well-being and belonging to a society and cultural environment. Pokémon Go Pokémon Go focuses heavily on a Core Drive 4 concept called “ .” Each Pokémon captured is added to a collection and gives users a sense of ownership. Once players catch a few Pokémon, they are motivated to catch all of them, and the hunt continues. collection set Core Drive 5: Social Influence & Relatedness If used properly, it can be one of the most potent and long-lasting tools for motivating people. This core drive taps into all the social elements that motivate people: mentorship, social acceptance, social feedback, companionship, competition, and even envy. Has it ever happened to you that you bought something you didn’t need but just because it reminded you of your childhood? That’s relatedness which refers to the human need and tendency to nostalgia and emotional associations. Saregama — Caravaan One of the reasons why the Saregama Caravaan is so popular is Nostalgia. In an age of high tech Alexas, while everyone was busy adding more ways to listen to songs, Saregama Caravaan carved a niche for itself by looking the other way- back at a simpler age, an older time. Amazon People trust what they can relate to. Appealing to an emotional connection with other users builds a sense of trust and lowers the threshold to buy something. On Amazon, you must have come across the following statement while looking for products: “Customers who bought this item also bought…”. In fact, approximately 60% of Amazon’s revenue comes from the recommendations section. Leaderboards in fitness apps are another interesting example of social influence, as people check out their progress, compare and compete with others. Core Drive 6: Scarcity and Impatience If you can’t have it, you want it. We have all been there. It’s an innate desire of humans. And the sixth Core Drive addresses just that – the longing for something, simply because it is scarce, exclusive, or immediately unattainable. And because it is so difficult to obtain, its perceived value increases immensely. Even leading brands like have successfully used scarcity as a significant lever to influence choice. OnePlus Urgency has been greatly leveraged in eCommerce. You must have often come across sales promise bargains on eCommerce sites like Myntra, Nykaa, Amazon, etc., that are only available for a limited period like “70% OFF. Today ONLY!”. The impulse to push that button is immense. The existence of the sale is scarce, and people are motivated to act with a sense of urgency. Core Drive 7: Unpredictability and Curiosity We, humans, are hard-wired to seek thrill in uncertainty. We’re driven by the chase. We have no foolproof way of predicting the future, yet we’re always thinking about what will happen next. Unpredictability entails constant engagement as one does not know what will happen next, and our brain’s reward center lights up when we encounter such sensations. Unpredictability is a powerful force in motivating people to keep pressing on until they have clarified the unknown. This explains our love for surprises and our desire to seek new experiences. The virtual scratch cards on Google Play are a great example as we mischievously scratch them, knowing quite well that there’s not going to be much in there. Example: Gpay Virtual cards TV/Web Series A good web series will add a cliffhanger at the end of every episode to create a sense of anticipation for the next, which appeals to the audience’s curiosity and desire to clarify the unknown. Core Drive 8: Loss and Avoidance Humans are risk-averse by nature, and this core drive is our natural aversion to losing things we have worked hard to obtain. Avoidance and loss motivate through the fear of losing something or having an undesirable event occur. We can go to any lengths to minimize potential loss or risks wherever and whenever possible. According to psychology, we are more likely to act based on avoiding loss rather than making gains. Hence the fear of losing 1000 Rs is greater than the opportunity to gain Rs.1000. There’s nothing as powerful as offering an incentive upfront and then threatening to take it away. For example : uses streaks to encourage users to build a daily habit of using their app by giving you more XP if you maintain a streak. Learners or app users have to achieve their daily goals to save and improve their streak. Duolingo Duolingo Gamification – Streaks Miss one day and the streak is reset to zero. More recently, this option was replaced with one free ‘Streak Repair’ per month for premium members and a ‘ ‘ item that can be bought in the in-app shop with Gems. The urge to protect the daily streak motivates the users to put a small amount of effort every day to preserve their streaks. Streak Freeze Another classic example of this is the Marketing campaigns that often target our Core Drive 8 with tactics like, “If you don’t sign up/purchase now, you’ll lose this chance forever.” Black Friday Black Friday is an excellent example of how limited opportunity can motivate people to act with an extreme sense of urgency. Every year in the United States, products are priced a lot cheaper on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and people flock to stores to avoid losing out on sweet deals. Final Thoughts Gamification, or as Yu-Kai Chou calls it, human-focused design, is not about badges or leaderboards. It’s about human core drives, the most profound concept in gamification. And the Octalysis Framework tries to understand these nucleus motivations and uses them to drive behaviors. Decipher Your Mind: Gamification, the Octalysis Framework, and the Psychology of Motivation 

Last month, we changed our logo, and now have a new mascot named Octavia. What you don’t know is that we went through 7 iterations with 20+ models for our logo, and the whole process lasted 5 weeks. On the other hand, our mascot only took one iteration, but still with 20 models! We want to share everything with our community, so in this article, we’re going to share all the iterations for the logo and what our thoughts were for each one of them. You will most probably disagree with some, and might even have preferred another logo. We realized during these 5 weeks how subjective the process was, even though we tried to stick to our principles as much as possible. So don’t hesitate to share your opinion in the comments! Our brand is a living creature that will grow with time. Any feedback that can teach us something is worth having. The values we want to convey in our brand We’re building a data integration platform that helps you replicate data from any source to any destination, and that needs to adapt to any data infrastructure. So is at the center of what we build. adaptability Being able to connect any source to any destination is our vision, so we need our brand to be about . connectivity Airbyte is also defined by its open-source and community identity. The only way we can cover the long tail of integrations is through our community. That is why our brand needs to be friendly, which led us to think about animals. friendly In the end, when you think of these three values - - only one animal stood out: the octopus. Its tentacles could stand for connectivity. Its ability to squeeze through any space and to change colors could represent the adaptability of our brand. And having a friendly octopus mascot could be a way to build friendliness within our brand. adaptability, connectivity, and friendliness One last thing was missing, though: in order to become the new standard with which data is being moved across all companies, we needed to show great velocity and immense growth. That’s the idea of and that we wanted our brand to be associated with. movement velocity Our 20+ iterations on the icon Starting with our in-house designs We started with a few iterations of our own. Let’s look at them. You’ll understand why we needed some expert help ;). We didn’t number these, as I do not believe they are worth being dwelled upon. However, working on designs ourselves helped us get a better idea of what we really wanted. Leveraging expert help At this point, we started working with Daniel from . We loved his previous work with animals. Here is what he came up with, given the context we shared above. Kreatank All these designs were done across 4 iterations, and 2 additional ones to finalize the option we selected. In order to gather our feedback, we created a Google Doc with the whole team, so that everybody could chime in and share their feedback/ideas. Focusing first on the icon, and not the font At first, we started giving feedback on both the icons and the fonts, but we stopped focusing on the font iterations pretty quickly. We decided we would first agree on the icon and then decide on the font for the logo, once we had chosen the icon. The reason for that is that the font would depend on the icon, so it’s less efficient for the designer to work on both. We’d rather have more icon designs in the same amount of time, than fewer with fonts that we would want to deliberate upon in any case. So we deliberated over the font once we selected the icon (#20): Going the abstract approach Eventually, we went with this design, as you know. Why? Ultimately, we went for a more abstract approach than an immediately recognizable octopus. The reason was that we thought that it was more important for our logo to reflect our values of adaptability, connectivity, and velocity. Friendliness will come from the logo, as well as from the mascot and the overall visual identity. Being abstract means that different people see different things in our logo. We heard about a nautilus, a Tipp-ex, a paperclip, and even a long-distance view of a blue super saiyan flying, a comet, a supersonic object, and a flying spaghetti monster! Officially, we see an octopus in movement, but we do agree it also looks like a soaring comet, and we’re ok with that. So what do you see? But maybe more importantly, was there any other logo that spoke more to you? Our one iteration on the mascot Choosing our mascot was a completely different experience. This time, we worked directly with a very talented designer, . She’s the one behind Docker’s amazing illustrations. We knew we wanted to work with her; her designs bring so much friendliness, and this was what we needed. Laurel Duermael So, once the logo was finalized, we shared with her our vision for the brand and the octopus mascot, and also the newly designed abstract logo (most probably less useful, as it was too abstract). Here is what she came up with: You can see that she saw a nautilus in our logo, too! Number 15 was the obvious choice for us. It was the cutest, friendliest iteration, and it seemed to us it could show lots of different emotions as humans do. You can already see some of them on our page, or below. Community Let us know if you think we should have opted for a different one! Our iterations on the name of the mascot The last thing we needed was a name for the mascot. Our philosophy here was that it needed to be immediately friendly, possibly with a pun, and easily memorizable. So we started listing a few names that we liked and built a for our community to vote. The survey was also a way to gather other name ideas from the community. After that, we cherry-picked three names with high results from the community, and  two of them actually came as suggestions from the community: survey Bytee or Inky (most popular in the survey). Tako (meaning octopus in Japanese), suggested by the community. Octavia Squidington III (just “Octavia” for short) - the last name Squidington was a suggestion from the community. Bytee and Inky were cute, directly correlated to our brand. The logo could look like a Bytee that is flying, hence Airbyte. A bit fun, but that’s all: no humanization. Tako might seem more common, but unless we explained to you that it means octopus in Japanese, you wouldn’t get the link. "Octavia the octopus" has a nice alliterative sound to it. Squidington III could enable us to create a full backstory behind it. We feel it is the one name that you don’t need explanations for, it humanizes our octopus the most, and it can even put a smile on your face when you hear it. And that’s why we chose this name. Logo Design Process: Brand Values, Iterations, and Octavia — a Mascot

Signal filtering is the bread and butter of digital signal processing, and ARM Cortex-M cores provide a very efficient way to implement IIR filters, especially for cores that come with an FPU. ARM maintains the library as a collection of useful DSP functionality, including IIR filters implemented using a Direct Form II transposed structure. Big words, right? CMSIS-DSP In fact, the maths needed to go from filter specification to running code are not necessarily straightforward to do on paper. The process is complex and error prone, plus there is not a lot of value in doing it yourself for every minimal parameter variation. That's why at we created a collection of scripts to harness the power of to design IIR filters and automatically get "ready-to-run" C code for our applications. In this exclusive interview, Dmitry Zhelezov, co-founder of Subsquid (SQD), discusses the platform's recent $17 million funding round, its groundbreaking "modular indexing" technology, and the future of decentralized data access. Ishan Pandey: Hi Dmitry, welcome to our interview series. SQD recently launched its SQD token and has raised over $17 million in funding. Can you share the vision behind Subsquid and how the SQD token fits into your ecosystem? Dmitry Zhelezov: A lot of effort and billions of VC funding have been put into scaling the throughput of blockchains, namely how fast you put in new transactions. But at the same time, at the internet scale, the data is read on average 10-100 times more frequently than it’s written – you can think of how many twitter posts you read and compare to how many you write. Yet, the read access to real-time and historical blockchain data is more like an afterthought. Our mission at SQD is to enable permissionless, trustless access to the entirety of Web3 data at the Internet scale. Ishan Pandey: Indexing platforms are crucial for Web3 scalability. How does SQDd's approach to indexing differentiate itself from other solutions in the market, and what unique benefits does it offer to developers and users? Dmitry Zhelezov: Data Indexing is a complex multi-step process and is not dissimilar to how crude oil is refined into high-octane petrol. And likewise specialization is key to scale data indexing to the industrial scale. We at SQD pioneered what we call modular indexing design, where the data indexing pipeline is split into multiple completely independent steps. The key bottleneck we addressed is the step to extract the raw data. We are replacing the highly inefficient RPC nodes with read-optimized SQD Network for data access. The SQD Network is not only decentralized but is at least 100x more performant than the traditional way of indexing data. Ishan Pandey: SQD has recently partnered with Deutsche Telekom to run dedicated worker nodes. How do you see this collaboration enhancing the security and efficiency of blockchain data retrieval, and what does it mean for the future of decentralized infrastructure? Dmitry Zhelezov: Deutsche Telekom is one of the most notable players in the Web3 Infra space. For us, it’s not merely a stamp of quality approval but a strong boost for network liveness and decentralization. By design, the data in the SQD is spread across all nodes in the network with the maximal redundancy, so with the top-tier DT Infra team joining the network, we feel confidence in the quality of service it provides. Ishan Pandey: Your platform started in the Polkadot ecosystem but has since expanded to Ethereum and is now in beta for Solana. How do you manage the challenges of cross-chain indexing, and what opportunities does this multi-chain approach present? Dmitry Zhelezov: The SQD Network is designed to address the data access problem across the whole Web3 space, and can accommodate virtually any sort of on-chain data. This is the power of the modular indexing design, where we managed to make the SQD Network (the base data access layer part) truly chain-agnostic, putting the work of data decoding and transformation on the client side, close to the application business logic. Ishan Pandey: The concept of a decentralized "data lake" is intriguing. Can you explain how this works in practice and how it contributes to the overall efficiency and resilience of Web3 applications? Dmitry Zhelezov: Well, in fact SQD Network is more like a “Data Ocean” rather than a “Data Lake”. You can think of it as a planetary-scale database distributed across more than a thousand nodes each holding a chunk of data. The protocol ensures that there’s enough redundancy that no data is lost, and the nodes themselves act as mini-databases to query the chunk data they have. The access to the data as well as the rewards for the nodes is powered by the $SQD token, ensuring censorship-resistant, non-KYC access to the entirety of the data from anywhere in the world. Finally, the advanced cryptography and economic security guarantess that the data served by the nodes is not corrupted and sound. Ishan Pandey: As blockchain networks continue to grow and generate more data, what do you see as the biggest challenges for indexing platforms in the coming years, and how is SQD preparing to address these challenges? Dmitry Zhelezov: The exponential pace at which the amount of historical data is growing is probably the biggest challenge by far. Unfortunately, many ecosystems, like Solana Foundation or like Lens protocol, go for stop-gap centralized solutions like putting their data into Google Big Query. While it may solve some immediate developer needs, having a permissionless, extremely low-cost way to query and access this data is a must. Ishan Pandey: Looking ahead, how do you envision the role of indexing platforms evolving in the Web3 ecosystem, and what potential breakthroughs or innovations in this space excite you the most? Dmitry Zhelezov: The most exciting innovations are definitely coming from the advancements in modern cryptography. The two things I am particularly looking forward to is the further reduction of ZK proof generation by another two orders of magnitude (going from from affordable to extremely cheap), and then the mainstream adoption of the Fully Homorphic Encryption. The progress on ZK would allow it to fully leverage the compute power of very low-cost, untrusted nodes combined with the mathematical level of confidence in the validity of the data queries. Right now we are almost there, yet one has to resort to some trade-offs in terms to mitigate to yet still relatively high cost of generating a ZK proof. The FHE is even more exciting as it will allow it to incorporate private data into the SQD Network, utilize the full power of its query engine to filter and aggregate the data, without compromising the privacy. Unfortunately, many ecosystems, like Solana Foundation or like Lens protocol, go for stop-gap centralized solutions like putting their data into Google Big Query. While it may solve some immediate developer needs, having a permissionless, extremely low-cost way to query and access this data is a must. Dmitry Zhelezov: The most exciting innovations are definitely coming from the advancements in modern cryptography. The two things I am particularly looking forward to is the further reduction of ZK proof generation by another two orders of magnitude (going from from affordable to extremely cheap), and then the mainstream adoption of the Fully Homorphic Encryption. Dmitry Zhelezov: The progress on ZK would allow it to fully leverage the compute power of very low-cost, untrusted nodes combined with the mathematical level of confidence in the validity of the data queries. Right now we are almost there, yet one has to resort to some trade-offs in terms to mitigate to yet still relatively high cost of generating a ZK proof. The FHE is even more exciting as it will allow it to incorporate private data into the SQD Network, utilize the full power of its query engine to filter and aggregate the data, without compromising the privacy. SHAPE OF SPACE-TIME QUANTA A natural question arises, what is the geometric shape of the space-time quanta? To answer this question, we need first to apply the energy-momentum relation that is satisfied by Snyder’s algebra [38]: where m is the mass of the physical object. Substituting Eq. (3) and Eq. (4) into Eq. (8), we get: This means that the mass of the space-time quanta is completely determined by its unique length and it is strictly a “positive real value”. It is worth mentioning that generalized forms of Snyder algebra with de Sitter background imply modification of dispersion relation [39] that may introduce corrections to the mass of space-time quanta obtained in Eq.(9). The flatness of quantum Lorentzian space-time suggests that the space-time quanta be described by 4-polytope geometry [40]. We use elementary particle physics as a guide to building the quanta of space-time. The standard model of particle physics has 25 fundamental particles that include 12 fermions (quarks and leptons), 4 gauge bosons that carry electromagnetic force and weak nuclear force, 8 gluons that carry strong nuclear force, and 1 Higgs scalar field. The quanta of space-time must carry a signature of information from all these fundamental particles that constitute the fundamental structure of nature. The space-time quanta must be “self-dual” as well to preserve its uniqueness. Therefore, we look for a highly symmetric 4-dimensional geometric object that is self-dual and identified by only unique length which could represent the fundamental particles of nature on its vertices. This could be a uniform 4-polytope which is a 4-dimensional object with flat sides/faces and is vertex-transitive symmetric which means an isometric map of any vertex onto any other. A regular 4-polytope has the highest degree of symmetry as its faces/cells are regular polytopes and transitive on the symmetries of the polytope. More symmetries are found in regular 4-polytopes that define the convex region as a subset that intersects every line into a single line segment. There are two self-dual convex regular polytopes that are 5-cell, which has 5 vertices, and 24-cell which has 24 vertices. We choose the 24-cell because it has enough vertices to assign with elementary particles. A representation in a plane of a regular 24-cell is given in Fig. (1): The 24-cell geometric properties can be summarized as follows: • Its boundary in 3-dimensions forms 24 octahedral cells with six meeting at each vertex, and three at each edge • It has 96 triangular faces, 96 edges, and 24 vertices. The vertex figure is a cube • self-dual [41] • identified by one length where edge length equals the distance between the center and vertex (radius) The 24-cell exists in 4- dimensional Euclidean geometry, but Minkowski space-time is 4- dimensional “pseudo-Euclidean”. This can be simply resolved if time is represented as an imaginary spatial dimension which is well-established in quantum field theory [42] and in Euclidean quantum gravity [43].
