Let's consider this concept within the context of blockchain and decentralized finance. Today, the blockchain and DeFi ecosystem reflects a vibrant marketplace where each stall is a unique blockchain or protocol. It's a hotbed for innovation but with a catch. Each blockchain and protocol operates under its own rules, speaking unique languages that lead to a web of intricate interactions. The lack of seamless and secure blockchain interoperability means developers working with multiple blockchains and protocols face a labyrinthine process, obstructing the path to seamless interoperability. Digital Tower of Babel These fractured blockchains and DeFi protocols form a puzzle that developers must solve. Every piece of the puzzle represents a different blockchain with its unique set of rules, smart contracts, and communication protocols. This fractured environment makes it challenging to build applications that can interact seamlessly with multiple blockchains. Now, consider the arrival of a Rosetta Stone for blockchain: universal connectors. They act as the bridge between disparate blockchains and DeFi protocols, interpreting the unique languages of each system, thus allowing developers to work with multiple systems effortlessly. In the blockchain world, interoperability is the capacity of diverse blockchain networks to share information and conduct transactions with each other. For instance, notary schemes often require a trusted third party, creating a single point of failure. Hashed time-lock contracts, while innovative, are limited by the need for participants to be online simultaneously for transactions to occur. Sidechains and relay chains have come closer to achieving seamless interoperability but are often constrained by complex setups and high operational costs. Importantly, some of these traditional approaches can also introduce single points of failure and attack vectors, exacerbating the security risks. The real-world implications of blockchain interoperability — or the lack thereof — are far from theoretical. He pursued his studies, worked his day job, and continued to build more prototypes of the Zcash sidechain in his spare time. By the end of 2021, he let go of his job to focus on his studies and Drivechain-related work – which was particularly important, as he had received an offer for full-time employment on the project for after graduation. Unfortunately, Chashchinskii did not have the chance to complete his master’s degree due to the volatile circumstances in Russia. After leaving the country and relocating to Istanbul, he had much more time on his hands which he spent mostly on the development of  Drivechain, and during that time, Nikita really found his stride. Most significantly, he built a software library that makes it much easier to build sidechains of altcoins – enabling their unique features – within the Bitcoin framework. Nikita explains that “Right now, adopting new technology in the cryptocurrency world is usually accompanied by creating a new 'token' or 'monetary unit', fragmenting the network, making the cryptocurrency industry something lesser than the sum of its parts, creating internal conflict, and legitimizing ponzi schemes and other con-artist [techniques].” In contrast, the two-way-pegged Bitcoin sidechains that he is developing have the potential to unite the entire cryptocurrency industry. By enabling the adoption of a variety of new technologies, without creating any new monetary units, BTC could easily be moved from one technological platform to another. Furthermore, it could do so at a 1-to-1 exchange rate. This would allow individual users to independently make decisions about the risks and features that they want to explore, without affecting the foundation of the currency at all. As this project gains momentum, it is likely going to lead to Bitcoin absorbing the market share of all useful altcoins by converting them into sidechains. Chashchinskii has already built solid sidechain versions of both Zcash and Ethereum, and his innovative work has been featured in Bitcoin Magazine. He is very excited about this unification, as it will lead to a more trustworthy and predictable market. Today, consumers use a wide variety of devices, browsers, and channels during their buying journey. Use Case 3: Burst Compute to a Public Cloud and Gradually Migrate The third use case is to leverage the flexible compute resources on the public cloud so that you can migrate analytics or AI to the cloud and leave your data on-prem. This migration is not easy because of the limitation of network latency and bandwidth while running analytic workloads in the cloud with the data on-prem. The common solution is copying data into the cloud environment and maintaining the duplicate data on-prem (also called “lift and shift”). However, this solution is not only error-prone and also leads to issues in data consistency. Furthermore, some organizations may face compliance and data sovereignty requirements, preventing them from copying data into the cloud. The performance concern makes it difficult to progress with cloud migration.
