Five benefits of attending hackathons My story Hey, folks. I have experience participating in hackathons and being a mentor at such events. Back in 2019, I attended by in London. This was an amazing event with more than 100 attendees. With this article, I wanted to share my experience, talk about my insights, and hopefully motivate you to attend hackathons in the future. This required a lot of communication with many people at the event while trying to build relationships and trust quickly. I managed to organize a team of 4 people. I feel like this experience made me a better leader. 2. You learn to brainstorm and make better product decisions I did not have a clear idea of what I wanted to build during the hackathon. A day before the event, I started brainstorming and decided it should be something for the hiring process. I then spent the first day of the hackathon refining product ideas with my team, starting with the problem definition and finishing with potential impact and benefits for our future clients. The final product vision was to create a platform that would automate and improve the hiring experience for companies and candidates. With a single platform, candidates would go through the entire interview process and eventually even be able to accept their job offer via our platform. From the company's side, they can build out interview stages with initial screen calls, quizzes, tasks, and scheduling face-to-face interviews. Moreover, this platform would contain a lot of templates for building interview stages and automation processes to analyze CVs, collect candidate progress and build leaderboards with candidates with the best results. As you can see, we came up with an interesting product to solve important hiring problems. A hackathon can teach you a lot about the product development process, just within the space of a few days. 3. You get exposed to new technologies One of the event conditions was to use QuickBooks API and Clarifai API or Vonage API (formerly, Nexmo) to win partner nomination. We were using all three APIs in our MVP. For example, we were using Nexmo to perform phone and video calls for interviews. One of the exciting features was to perform an initial screening phone call using Nexmo API and have a bot ask all the screening questions. Then the recording with answers was sent to Clarify API to analyze the interview result. It is quite a new experience to be interviewed by a bot, but we will probably see something similar in the future. Moreover, our platform used Quickbooks API as an accounting solution. I had not used any of these three technologies before the event, so I enjoyed exploring them and learnt quite a lot! Representatives from each company were there to support us and help us master the APIs quickly, which was another benefit of the hackathon. A hackathon can be a great excuse to play with cool and exciting tech that you aren’t exposed to in your everyday work life. 4. You meet new people in the industry Like with all public events, a hackathon is a great way to expand your professional network. I met many professionals from different business areas. It was exciting to speak with CEOs, software engineers, and designers and learn from them. I cherish the relationships I built during the hackathon and look forward to expanding my network even further during future events. 5. You (might) win I’m not going to lie: it feels nice to win! The output is higher quality, and significantly more flexible, with OBS, but there is a small learning curve, and it takes some handling to get your videos to a finished state. You can also just use a LIVE broadcast utility, like the ones offered by Facebook or YouTube, etc. There are some advantages to doing your on-page beforehand, but if you make a mistake, or accidentally reveal some sensitive data, then there’s a bit of risk involved. 7. I’m also intentionally leaving-out a section on stock media and outsourcing, because you don’t really need it, and incorporating that stuff will take more time than most of your videos take to actually record. Once your channel starts bringing-in big traffic, then you can circle-back, and start incorporating more sophisticated media, but for now, my recommendation is to not waste your time with it. If you make half an image a picture of your face, and the other half a text description, or basic icon, then you’ll be ahead of most of your competition. You can also skip making thumbnails altogether, then go-back and add something nice, later on, if a video starts gaining traction. 8. MorningFame That tool tells me that the majority of my traffic, which is small yet still gets me steady subscribers, comes from internal YouTube SEO. So, it makes a big difference to invest time into setting your on-page features, like titles, description, hashtags, and tags, with the appropriate keywords you wanna rank for. It’s ideal to vlog everyday, but any level of frequency will get you progress, using any kind of keyword research. Getting your videos embedded, on other sites, will increase rankings a bit, and link-building works, here, as well, but the main thing is to do good on-page, and create a lot of content. You can always improve rankings later, if something is on-its-way to ranking for something legitimate. So many modern web applications, both client-side and server-side, use JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) for authentication, and this is an excellent approach. However when things don't work, it can be tricky to work out why. This post aims to give you some tactics for understanding and correcting problems with JWTs. If you're just getting started, check out the first. documentation on working with JWTs and our APIs Does it Look Plausible? Sometimes the problem is as simple as knowing whether you even passed the right value into the right place, the equivalent to "is it plugged in?" question. Add a little debugging to your code to output the JWT somewhere you can see it, such as into your error log. Then take a look for the following: Does this look like a token? It should be three sets of garbled-looking alphanumeric strings (technically, upper and lower case characters, numeric digits, `+` and `/` are permitted, with `=` used for padding), separated by dots. Is there whitespace around it, including a newline at the end? This can trip up some tools. Is it there at all? The number of times I have mistyped a variable name and renegerated the token a few times before realising that the problem is me, not the token, is too many to confess to! If the token passes visual inspection, then we need to get out some more specific tools. Check the Token at jwt.io There is an excellent (thanks, Auth0!) that can help us to understand when things are not what we were aiming for. JWT debugging tool Paste your JWT into the left hand pane, and if it can be parsed, the details of the three sections will be shown on the right hand side. The first section is the header, showing the type and algorithm used. For signing Vonage API calls, this will usually be of and of (the JWTs on the are , just in case that's useful information). typ JWT alg RS256 Message API signed webhooks HS256 The middle section contains most of the actual data. There are a few expected fields here for Vonage API calls with JWTs: stands for "issued at" and should be a unix timestamp iat is the "expiration time" and is also a unix timestamp exp stands for "JWT ID", and should be a unique identifier (format not specified) jti is required for Vonage API calls, and it must match the Private Key used to sign the token. application_id You may also see a field (the Client SDKs use this) or something called which is the timestamp that this token is "Not Before", meaning the token isn't valid until that moment. sub nbf The third and final section in the jwt.io debugger is the signature. JWTs are created with a private key, but the key isn't included in the payload. The private key is essentially a shared secret between you and Vonage. You can check that the signature checks out by adding your private key into the web interface in this section. Regenerate your JWT Sometimes the problem we think is the token is actually something completely different! Here are some tactics to try when the first two steps have not helped. Try a New Application Creating a new application, generating new keys, making sure you have the correct file named ... these are all steps that really shouldn't make a difference but sometimes are all that is needed. It's my "one weird trick" for JWT problems, and perhaps it will help you too? private key Generate a Different Token Try generating a token and then using it either in your application or in a raw API call from your favourite HTTP client.
