Since conception, they had relied on custom-built feeds that caused several issues. They had no other option but to maintain their own infrastructure in order to support their initial solution (ie. PostgreSQL database and Redis cache). The former implementation also relied on storing user activity in a PostgreSQL table which, as activity grew, took more and more time to scan and retrieve activities relevant to a unique user. . They knew their in-house solution wouldn’t scale indefinitely and adding and maintaining more infrastructure in order to fix it was not an option they wanted to explore Sketchfab heard about Stream as they are a fellow . They tried the interactive and were impressed with how easy Stream’s API is to use. Before making the final decision to work with Stream, they did their research. The main alternative they considered was building an in-house solution on top of Stream’s open source Stream-Framework. Another benefit is the solid performance and reliability offered by the API. Stream’s hosted platform is based on Go and a highly optimized feed storage infrastructure. That level of performance and reliability is hard to achieve when building an in-house solution. The final reason they decided to use Stream’s API is pricing. The team at Sketchfab realized that hosting and maintaining their own Cassandra cluster, worker instances, task broker, real time infrastructure and API workers would simply not be cost-effective. TechStars graduate API tutorial Stream’s built-in support for aggregation, notification feeds and ranking was a major reason for why they chose the hosted solution. The end result of this collaboration is the new feed on Sketchfab: In addition to the news feed, their notification feed is also powered by Stream. Dubsmash Dubsmash has always been a huge fan of not “reinventing the wheel” by using existing solutions, being that they’re a small team operating very quickly. However, they initially believed that they could build an in-house feed solution that would have all the features and functionality they needed, at a lower price than what they saw in the market. While they were able to easily construct a simple chronological feed, they ran into many difficulties when attempting to add features such as ranking and personalization. After spending many weeks and valuable resources on development, they realized that continuing to build in-house would not provide them with the best and most sustainable outcome. They soon discovered that the complexities of building streams and feeds are vast. Dubsmash has been familiar with Stream for over two years. They had experience with the original, open source Stream framework and had gone through the tutorials. They had also done extensive research on and . When they reached out to Stream, . Dubsmash was particularly impressed with Stream’s easy-to-use , and the fact that the API can cover many use cases. Dubsmash uses several ranking methods side by side. The feed in their admin is strictly stored by time and the feed shown to users takes into account both popularity and time decay. What would have taken weeks of development time to build in-house, took a day and a half to implement with the API. /Web3, the so-called “decentralized web,” presents itself as a revolutionary evolution of the internet, a departure from its Web 2.0 predecessor, with its centralized control, surveillance, and data exploitation. In the rosy vision of Web 3.0, users encounter enhanced control, fortified privacy, and a fertile breeding ground for innovation. As we reflect on Web 3.0 at the close of 2023, we are confronted with a stark division between the idealized vision and the reality shaped by global brands that have capitalized on that vision. Web 3.0 Decentralization promises a digital world where user autonomy and privacy thrive, aiming to break free from centralized data control. However, the complexities of decentralized systems, security risks, and uncertain regulations make achieving ‘true decentralization’ a formidable challenge. Some advocates of pure decentralization still exist, but they’re no longer as welcome in the halls of power as they were at the height of peer-to-peer and open-source acceptance following the dotcom bubble burst. The term ‘Web 3.0’ refers to the imagined ‘next generation’ of the internet, which its proponents imagine to be based on blockchain technology and smart contracts. Web 3.0 is not a clearly defined concept, but rather a vision of how the internet could evolve and transform in the future. Some of the features of Web 3.0 include allowing new ways of organizing and governing online communities and platforms, without relying on traditional models of authority and control. For example, Web 3.0 could enable users to have more control over their own data and identity, and to participate in decentralized applications ( ) that run on the blockchain and are owned and operated by the users themselves. Web 3.0 could also foster more collaboration and innovation, as well as more transparency and accountability, among the participants of the network. In other words, it holds a strong populist-utopianist side. But that isn’t too far from how it is marketed by big stakeholders, either. So, who are those big stakeholders? DApps Cloud services are very important to the idea of Web 3.0, as they enable the creation and deployment of DApps. It is difficult to estimate how much of the internet is hosted by cloud services, as there is no definitive way to measure the size and scope of the internet. However, some sources suggest that cloud services host around 40 percent of the internet’s traffic and data. This percentage is likely to increase in the future, as more websites, applications, and devices migrate to the cloud. According to , the global cloud infrastructure services market was valued at $371.4 billion in 2020, and is expected to reach $832.1 billion by 2025. The market is dominated by a few major players, namely Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, and IBM Cloud. These five providers accounted for 65 percent of the total market share in the fourth quarter of 2020. AWS alone accounts for half of that, with clients that include Netflix, Airbnb, Spotify, NASA, and the CIA. Statista Speaking of government agencies, they, of course, have a much greater voice than the average individual in matters of infrastructure. The decentralized web challenges the existing power structures and authority of governments, as it enables users to own and control their own data and digital assets, without relying on intermediaries or centralized platforms. Decentralization brings with it vulnerabilities arising from opaque channels beyond state control, as well as jurisdictional issues. The tremendously centralized hosting platforms of the “decentralized” web are eager partners for states, as has already been amply shown in recent years. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts have expressed concerns about the Federal Reserve’s interest in central bank digital currency (CBDC). For its part, the Department of Justice has already proven itself proficient in tracing blockchain transactions. Yet when we look for information pertaining to Web 3.0 stakeholders and their expected benefits, we seldom find such information. We instead enter a hall of mirrors, where “stakeholders” is a placeholder for those who consume whatever it is that is ultimately served to them. Developers and users are cast in their roles as primary beneficiaries, along with “activists” (read “miscellaneous”), whose very inclusion inside the schema represents a foregone conclusion about our future. Optimistic boosters suggest novel governance mechanisms to offer liberation from traditional models. Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) lets token holders play at democracy by voting for block producers, peddling the illusion of decentralization. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) run on code and collective voting, supposedly slicing away centralized control. Yet as we marvel at successful projects like EOS and MakerDAO, we’re also haunted by the ghosts of successive failures. The DAO, an organization that raised $150 million to invest in projects on the Ethereum blockchain, was hacked soon after its 2016 launch by an attacker exploiting a vulnerability in the smart contract code, and $60 million was stolen. Such incidents emphasize the importance of governance mechanisms that can prevent and resolve such incidents. And yet it is the state, that old monopolizer of such forms of control, which is best positioned to respond to the unintended consequences of decentralized utopianism. Open-source software (OSS) sits at the heart of Web 3.0, providing the building blocks for various applications and platforms, such as blockchain, peer-to-peer networks, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and more. However, OSS faces a grim battle for survival, as it struggles to secure adequate and sustainable funding. Funding is essential for OSS to maintain its quality, security, and innovation, as well as to support the developers and communities behind it. The traditional funding models for OSS, such as donations, sponsorships, grants, crowdfunding, and subscription fees, are often insufficient, unreliable, or misaligned with the values and incentives of OSS. They can fall victim to the cycles of fundraising for the sake of fundraising inside a broader tech industry ecosystem within which failure is celebrated in perpetuance of the hype train. All together, the proponents of ‘true decentralization’ — opponents of what we might rather call today’s real existing “true centralization” — are no real opposition at all. The promised utopia of a decentralized Web 3.0, facilitated by serverless cloud hosting, still relies on a handful of megacorporations. The only thing the hype does/did is allow those megacorporations to sell SaaS products while requiring users to sacrifice more privacy and autonomy. When Amazon confessed this year that cloud hosting its own video services proved 90% more expensive than locally hosting them, it struck many observers as a confession. However, what was being confessed was not often clearly defined. Cloud services are here to stay as a profitable product accessible to small users. But it showed us, if we still had any doubts, that in the playbook of big tech, decentralization for us was always designed to result in more centralization for them. Decentralization Is an Illusion: A 2023 End-of-Year Look at Web 3.0 

The most popular game/platform in the world shows us how some of the darkest chapters of labor history can easily repeat themselves in virtual reality. British YouTuber blew the lid off of a long-simmering controversy surrounding Roblox, creator of one of the world’s most popular video games — or “platforms,” or “universes,” or whatever else it may be dubbed for the sake of legal expediencies. In 2021, Smith posted on his channel that attracted nearly two million views. This was followed by an attempt by at the beginning of this year to silence him. Rather than remove the first video, Smith and his team continued their investigation, uncovering even more lurid details about Roblox’s operations. The has since been viewed 7 million times. According to Smith, Roblox is working to turn back the clock on child and labor protections as well as to undercut antitrust laws. Worse, this strategy is symptomatic of the behavior of the tech sector as a whole. If he’s right, then Roblox may well be the harbinger of the kind of venal exploitation that will fester on the newly heralded “metaverse.” The two videos, which each deserve to be viewed themselves, paint a rapacious vision of Roblox. To begin with, the multiplayer platform draws on a core base of players aged 9 to 15: the premise is that children are coming together to make games for other children to play. To this end, Roblox offers free development tools and hosting. But Roblox’s games are not called “games” — they are “experiences.” This word game is used in order to avoid legal problems that would arise by placing Roblox (itself nominally a game) in other game stores. The reclassification maneuver has proven to be so successful that Roblox has grown into the most popular game in the US and Europe: there are 200 million monthly players and over 20 million hosted “experiences.” Compare these numbers to those of the video game distribution service Steam, which had 134 million monthly active users in 2021 and only 55,000 hosted games. However, while Steam takes a 30 percent commission from developers’ earnings, Roblox takes a staggering 75.5 percent, although that number is only the tip of the moneymaking juggernaut. In reality, Roblox is profiting at every turn. Their intuitive development tools do not require advanced development skills, but they don’t foster the development of any transferable skills either. Through a combination of marketing, summer camps, internships, and the ambiance of the game itself, players are immersed immediately in the virtual capitalism of the platform. The in-game currency is called Robux, and it is traded between players for in-game assets. For each transaction on the platform, Roblox takes an additional 30 percent commission. This is a closed economic system. It is impossible to promote your own product because Robox doesn’t allow for browsing games outside of a list of the most popular. Developers are left to either seek outside promotion or pay the platform itself for advertising by bidding in an auction (with Robux, no less). Aspiring developers are given an opportunity to form a development team with other players, paying them in Robux for their labor. Keep in mind, all of this has been set up for minors. When it comes to sucking up real bucks, Roblox is remarkably efficient: it reports that only 17 cents out of the dollar escapes its clutches. Aside from the strong incentive to reinvest in in-platform marketing, Roblox also disincentivizes withdrawals in other ways. To begin with, one needs a $5 monthly “premium” subscription to be able to withdraw funds, and then to do that you need to have a minimum balance of 100,000 Robux. And get this: Roblox sells 100,000 Robux for US $1,000, but buys them for only $350. When Roblox is challenged about these practices, its defense is that the company is not profitable. But, when Roblox went public on the stock market in 2021, it was valued at $41 billion, putting it just below and ahead of Electronic Arts, which means the company is worth seven times more than the game-developing giant Ubisoft. Nintendo Meanwhile, Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki’s net worth has been estimated at around $8.3 billion. As Smith points out, looking like it is losing money is the way that Roblox has rocketed to its current niche. Being listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 may have marked the company’s arrival in the gaming market, but Roblox had already set up shop in the “metaverse” via its very own stock exchange of in-game assets bought and sold for in-game currency. This has led to some speculation that Robux may eventually make the leap to cryptocurrency. Last February (2022), the reported in that Roblox has a leg up on competitors in the race to monetize the metaverse. Citing a successful partnership with skateboarding lifestyle brand Vans, the article observes that “it’s easy to see how other brands will recognize the value in having a presence in the metaverse, and Roblox should be able to show it has the experience and success in hosting those brands.” Motley Fool Does Roblox Have a Plan to Win the Metaverse? Meanwhile, our understanding of this so-called “metaverse” is evolving rapidly. In a recent , Eric Ravenscraft noted that “the term doesn’t really refer to any one specific type of technology, but rather a broad (and often speculative) shift in how we interact with technology.” Maybe it isn’t a matter of Roblox “winning” the metaverse, then, but of helping to define it. Wired article When Facebook, Inc., changed its name last year to Platforms, Inc., it was to bring “the metaverse to life and help people connect.” The emerging metaverse, the company explained, “will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world.” Last week, Meta’s president of Global Affairs, realizing that this didn’t sound reassuring, : “There won’t be a Meta-run metaverse, just as there isn’t a ‘Microsoft internet’ or ‘Google internet’ today…. In a previous self-published work entitled , written with Cathy Hackl under the “The Marketing Futurists,” Wolfe endorsed a vision of the metaverse that makes it seem more like a dystopian advertising hellscape. The foreword by Lisa Buyer ends: “The journey is just beginning, and you are here. Let’s immerse in the future of marketing today. Namaste.” Metaversed KIT-AR identified on LinkedIn as Marketing New Realities nom de plume —the use of technology to increase worker efficiency—is not a new concept. One example is the introduction of onboard computers in the trucking industry, which—as any trucker will tell you—was never primarily intended to increase the drivers’ safety and comfort but to ensure compliance and increase productivity at all costs. The book, then, is designed for bosses, not workers. Worker augmentation Metaversed Since 2022, the prophecies of a consumer-driven metaverse have given way to efforts to rebrand it as a business tool for collaborative productivity. This is because consumers have rejected the services and products offered by the metaverse for obvious reasons: they entail hardware more expensive than the latest iPhone for an experience worse than the one provided twenty years ago. But whether we are speaking of individual consumers or company workspaces, there must be widespread adoption of metaverse-related technologies to make it worth investing in such technologies in the first place. That puts those who are selling the technology today—like Wolfe and Martin—in the difficult position of pitching a thing that simultaneously offers to be a marketing paradise with a captive audience and a collective voluntary endeavor: an impossible repeat of the Facebook formula, dependent on hardware that has not yet been adopted. The tech simply does not—and may never—sell itself, regardless of the engineering achievements that it represents. The history of the fax machine provides a cautionary tale here. Although faxes existed for over a century, the technology failed to gain ground in the commercial marketplace until it had reached the very end of its usefulness, despite technological improvements and decreasing costs. Predictions that the metaverse is likely to be adopted by Gen Z, based on their use of platforms like Roblox that include an XR element, feel like a marketing Hail Mary. Setting aside the question of , the use of Roblox is only as indicative of the metaverse’s future as the incessant virtual feeding demanded by Tamagotchis in the 1990s has been predictive of today’s so-called trend. It surpassed $2 billion in revenue in 2022 while it was trying to expand from being merely an educational publisher to providing “tech-enabled” educational services. CEO Brian Napack has stated that his plan for Wiley is to “bridge the widening talent gap with career-connected education products and education services” (i.e., he wants to break into the market). If they want to succeed in that, Wiley would be well advised to maintain its integrity as a scientific publisher. In the past, both Wiley and its subsidiary Hindawi have a number of scientific publications retracted. These were the result of Chinese (organizations selling research paper authorship), aided by collusion rings and tools like SCIgen. Metaversed augmented work paper mills The IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), which has collaborated with Wiley since 2001, is also plagued by such problems. The 2022 IEEE Conference on Metaverse in Haikou, China, was funded by various sponsors connected to the Chinese state.
