When the interview comes to the “Do you have any questions for me?” part, your best use of time is to try to uncover things that would cause you to absolutely say no (or yes) to the job. “What gets you most excited about the company’s future?” is… nice, but no matter what answer they give, it’s not likely to change your mind about whether to accept the job or not. What you really want are questions that speak to the day-to-day experience you’re going to have. You also want questions that are more  difficult for the other person to “storytell” their way out of.  Questions like “What’s different about working here than anywhere else you’ve worked?” are so subjective and so broad that the other person could spin a complete fairy tale. A few weeks back, posted a series of some pretty . Because the internet is a funny place, I’ll include his original post down at the bottom, but I wanted to offer some reflections and additions  of my own here. Arpad Szakal kick-ass examples over on LinkedIn What I LIKE about Arpad’s questions is that they not only cut to the heart of the issues they address, but they also speak to some pretty solid deal-breaker aspects. It’s not even so much WHAT the person answers, but HOW they answer (and how consistent the answers are when asked across  the interview process). That said, the answers Arpad shared are very manager-specific. And I’ll go on record to say I disagree that you’re selecting a manager. In  my last job, I changed managers four times in the span of 2 months (and job and team didn’t change). While that’s an extreme example, it underscores the nature of IT work. my You are NOT, in fact, selecting a manager. You are selecting a company first and foremost and a team second. Even the team can change, but if you have a sense of the landscape beyond your desk, you can at  least gain some awareness of whether the role you’re interviewing for  is in an island of calm on an otherwise stormy sea or a waterlogged rowboat in the middle of an otherwise serene pond; or… at best, the team  you’re joining reflects the same stability, values, culture, and tempo  as the rest of the organization. But even with the manager-specific nature of Arpad’s questions, it’s fairly easy to broaden them to encompass a team, department, or company: Can you share a time when someone gave feedback on something that could be improved or changed in the team? How does this company handle mistakes or failures within a department? I wanted to add a few more questions, which I think have the same flavor but are possibly more helpful for folks pursuing a career in  tech: What’s on your “negative roadmap” – the list of things this role (team, department, company) will never do because it’s outside the scope of our goals? Teams (feel free to substitute “departments”, “companies”) spend a lot of time focused their responsibilities – whether it’s described as a  roadmap, service level agreements, etc. And rightly so. But sometimes, it’s important to be clear about what is NOT being offered. What are  some things that are explicitly excluded from this role (or this team or this department)? How is that list created, negotiated, and agreed  on? How do you recognize and reward people who “do it right the first time,” who pay down technical debt, and generally keep problems from happening rather than waiting for the emergency and then swooping in? It is pretty common to reward people when they save the day. Heroic effort is incredibly noticeable. But everyone understands it’s far  better to work in a way that the problem doesn’t happen in the first  place. But that’s so much harder to recognize, let alone reward. Thinking about the first 3-6 months of this job, what does “success” look like? The framing I love to use for this question is: “Imagine it’s six months from now. You’ve hired me, and we’re having a beer, and you are  so incredibly happy with the work I’ve done that you would be ashamed  NOT to give me a raise. Can you picture that? Great. Now… tell me what  it is that I did to make you feel that way.” How do we track when the goals or priorities change mid-way through a cycle? Typically goals are set at specific times (both for individuals and for teams, departments, etc), and are framed as things that will be  measured at the end of that period. But emergencies, course corrections,  and even the whims of leadership often (sometimes “usually”) intervene.  So, people end up hitting their review period with a list of goals that  are no longer valid and that haven’t been done in any case. How does  the manager (and company) manage that reality? Meanwhile, here are two more questions if you’ll be stepping into a job someone else recently filled: What is something the previous person did as they performed this job that folks loved and appreciated? What is something the previous person did as they performed this job that you’d have preferred they stopped doing? And finally, if you feel like you have a decent rapport with the other person, here are some that MIGHT yield unexpected insights: What is one thing people never ask you about in this role (or this team, department, or company) that you wish they would? What am I not asking that you think I should? That’s my extension of Arpad’s original list. I’d love to hear what you think of them and, even moreso, how they worked for you if you tried them during an interview. What is on the board? This release contains 21 new features, 18 performance optimizations, and 37 bug fixes. Here are several exciting features I would like to you to know about: New Refreshable Materialized Views. It creates crontab-like refreshing views. New PASTE JOIN clause. Handy 1-to-1 row join of datasets. New ORDER BY clause ALL. Syntax sugar to order query by every column from the SELECT statement. New mutation command ALTER TABLE <table> APPLY DELETED MASK. It allows me to build useful data ETL pipelines in a very simple way just using SQL letting the ClickHouse to do the routine job for you. Discover how to install an IPFS node on your Synology NAS and create your personal decentralized storage node. Synology NAS home servers remain one of the most cost-effective and efficient solutions for addressing a variety of data storage and file sharing needs in many households. From media streaming and office collaboration to home automation, surveillance, and even remote access, a private cloud storage service can accomplish a great deal. While Synology offers its proprietary file system and backup system, the Interplanetary File System (IPFS) presents a resilient, decentralized file storage network designed to withstand challenges at the protocol level. Implementing IPFS on your Synology NAS can provide an excellent solution for storing public or encrypted personal data. This article will guide you through the process of setting up IPFS on your Synology NAS device using Docker. Pre-requisites To follow this tutorial, you will need A Synology NAS server with Disk Station Manager  (any capacity) A Wi-Fi router (with admin access) A device to access the router and Synology admin page (laptop, PC, tablet or phone) Here is my setup: Synology DS920 4x Seagate Ironwolf NAS HDD 8TB (RAID5 24TB) Netgear Orbi Mesh Wi-Fi Router MacBook Pro My disk RAID configuration is RAID5, which allows one out of the four disks to fail without causing data losses. This configuration reduces my effective storage space to 24TB. Synology's site offers a handy for reference. RAID calculator Setting up IPFS on Synology NAS The Synology system operates like a mini server, but its system isn’t entirely open. This means you cannot install any open source software you like. However, using DiskStation’s Package Centre to install a docker container to run IPFS. Here’s how: Step 1 - Access your Synology DSM You should know how to access Synology NAS Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). If not, follow to access. I am accessing my DSM using port forwarding service offered by Synology. this guide quickconnect.to Step 2 - Open your Package Center and search for “Docker” and click “Install”. Step 3 - Open Docker app, go to “Registry” and find “ipfs/kubo”, leave the tag as “latest” and click “Select” to install IPFS node software. Step 4 - Go to “Image”, you should see “ipfs/kubo:latest” image in the list of images. In “Network” page, leave network as “bridge”, click on “Next”: You will find more settings on the next page, such as system resources allocation or auto-restart in case of failure. Click on “Next”. In the “Port Settings” page, assign memorable ports to allow the webui to work reliably. I simply added 1 to the first two digits of all the container ports numbers as shown in the screenshot below. Local Port - Container Port - Type 5101 - 4001 - TCP 5101 - 4001 - UDP 6101 - 5001 - TCP 9180 - 8080 - TCP 9181 - 8081 - TCP I chose not to map any volume to it and left it as default on the next page. Now create the container by clicking “Done” on the next page. Returning to the “Container” section, you should see “ipfs-kubo1” running. Congratulations! You now have IPFS running on your Synology home server. Double click on the running container to see the details. You'll notice port 49159 is assigned to kubo’s webui port 5001. In the next step, we'll figure out how to access the webui so you can upload a file. Step 5 - Access IPFS WebUI. To access the webui of IPFS, we will need to visit “https://<your-synology-server-subnet-address>:<docker-assigned-port-for-5001>/webui”. So you will need to find out which address in your home router your synology is running on first. Mine is running on “192.168.1.44” so to visit the webui, I will need to visit “ ”. https://192.168.1.44:6101/webui Upon loading, you might notice an error. The webui page is experiencing CORS issues when making API calls. We need to configure the IPFS daemon to accept CORS API calls from sources other than localhost or 127.0.0.1. Due to Docker's limitations on Synology DSM, this requires a bit of a workaround. First, copy the first command from step two of the webui home page, starting with ipfs config --json API. HTTPHeaders. Access-Control-Allow-Origin '[http://192.168.1.44:49159", "http://localhost:3000", "http://127.0.0.1…. Go to “Terminal” in the ipfs-kubo1 settings page, click on the down arrow and select “Launch with command”. Paste in the command and click “OK” to start the new command line window. The main terminal isn't responsive to our commands due to some issues. However, using this function, we can execute CLI commands one at a time. Repeat the same process for the second command ipfs config --json API. HTTPHeaders. Access-Control-Allow-Methods '["PUT", "POST"]'. Now, return to the home page and restart the container. If we revisit our Synology URL against the port that the webui is expected to run on, we should be able to use the webui without issues. Go ahead and upload your first file on your private IPFS node! Keep it Secure What we've just done is to allow anyone on our router to access our IPFS instance. Without any port forwarding, external users should not be able to access it. However, this is not an ideal approach. Unfortunately, Kubo does not come with a token or login system, so it might be better if you implement a login page or key pair for IPFS instance’s access control. A client might be able to help. Synology SSO You should also consider enforcing SSL certificates and firewall rules before exposing your IPFS instance publicly. Benefits of using IPFS on Synology NAS Low resource consumption:  Synology is designed for long-term, efficient operation. Kubo consumes very little system resources. Decentralized and owned by the user: By running it on your Synology, you contribute to the decentralization of the IPFS network. It's also beneficial to have your IPFS node up and running all the time to persist your file and help others access the network. Scalability and reliability, persists data: In addition to your PC, laptops, and perhaps Raspberry Pi, Synology provides another place to host your precious data, making it hard to lose. Conclusion Running your private IPFS on Synology home servers using the Docker app provided by its DSM is a fantastic idea. In just a few minutes, you can set it up and get it running. How to Be Careful When Sharing WiFi Password With QR Code

Taking proper care of our wireless network is essential these days. Besides taking care of the security of our network, one of the things to take care of is the number of users connected to our wireless network. Checking this will tell us whether there are any unwanted or unauthorized connections. However, keep in mind that more and more devices connect to our wireless network these days, like game consoles, wireless printers, smart TVs, and so on. There is no need to mention laptops, smartphones, and tablets because we are pretty aware that they are connected to our Wi-Fi. In this article, I am going to show you how to check the number of users connected to your Wi-Fi and what you can do to prevent unauthorized access to your network. But first, let’s take a look at the maximum number of users that can connect to your Wi-Fi or share your internet connection. How Many Devices Can Connect to My Wireless Router? Are you worried that too many users are connected to your wireless network? Well, , you shouldn’t worry too much about that. Generally, most routers support around 250 users or devices being connected at the same time. Please note that this number includes all the devices I mentioned, like laptops, smartphones, wireless printers, smart TVs, etc. if you are using your Wi-Fi at home Each of the connected devices will use its part of the bandwidth, so the real problem is that when a large number of devices get connected, it can severely affect the performance of your network. For example, if just one device is abusing the bandwidth by downloading large files from the internet, it will make the connection almost unusable for other devices and users. How to Check the Number of Users Connected to Wi-Fi? Checking the number of connected users to the Wi-Fi network can be helpful in determining whether there are just too many connected users or any users you don’t recognize in the network. In order to check the number of users connected to the Wi-Fi, you can do this from the router’s admin dashboard or by using an app or software installed on your device. So, let’s see how to do this properly. Check the Router Admin Dashboard Most routers will display the number of connected users to the network on their home screen. However, you need to know how to access the router’s admin dashboard in the first place. Connect your device to the wireless network or connect it directly to the router using an Ethernet cable. Find the router’s IP address. You can follow the steps or check the label on your router that has all the admin login details printed on it. You will also need the admin username and password, so take a look at the label as well. described in this article Now launch the web browser on your device, and enter the router’s IP address in the URL bar. Hit the Enter button or tap on Go if you are using a smartphone or a tablet, and the router login page should appear. Enter the admin username and password. Be careful because these are case-sensitive. Click on Login, and you should see the router admin dashboard if they are correct. Now, depending on the router brand or model, you will either see the number of connected devices on the home screen, or you will have to find them in the settings. You will see a list of connected devices if you click on the Clients (Connected or Attached Devices) icon. Usually, you will see the name of the device and its MAC address. This MAC address is unique for each device, and you can easily check the device’s MAC address and edit the name of the device so you can easily recognize it in the future. Use A Network Scanner App or Software Another way to find the number of connected users to your Wi-Fi is with the help of an app or software that can be installed on your smartphone or computer. Some of the most recommended ones are: GlassWire – a professional firewall and network scanner. Download the free version and install it on your computer. After you launch it, it will scan your network. Click on Things in the menu at the top, and you will see a list of the device currently connected to your network. Click on Scan at the top to refresh the list, and there you should see all the computers, tablets, smartphones and other devices connected to your Wi-Fi. – a small tool that will scan your network and list all its connected devices. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to download it on your Windows computer. Install and run the software, and you will see a list of all the devices that are connected to your network. Wireless Network Watcher Fing – Network Scanner – This is an app that can be installed on your iPhone or Android phone. Find it in the App Store and install it. Follow the instructions when you run it for the first time. Then click on Scan for devices. You will see the number of devices in a second, and you shouldn’t have any trouble identifying who is using a specific device. Use the Command Prompt on Windows Another way to see the number of users connected to your network is by typing a specific command in the Command Prompt. Launch the Command Prompt on your Windows machine. Click on the Start button, and in the search bar type cmd. Then press the Enter key, and the Command Prompt will launch. N type ipconfig and press enter. This command will list some network details, and you really need the Default Gateway in this case just to know your router's IP address. Now the command you want to use is arp -a. Type it in and press the Enter button. All the connected devices will be listed here, along with their IP and MAC address. Since you have already found out that 192.168.0.1 is the router IP address, all the devices connected to the network will have their IP starting with 192.168.0. How to Remove an Unwanted Device from the Network? In most cases, when you check the number of users connected to your Wi-Fi network, you will recognize the devices. However, what can you do when you notice a device and simply can’t figure out what it is? It is either a neighbor connected to your network, or there is a device from your household that’s using its part of the bandwidth. Well, if you want to remove such devices/users, here are a few suggestions. Change Your Wireless Password – Changing the wireless password is the best thing you can do at the moment. However, you need to know that you will have to reconnect all your other devices to the wireless network after you change the password. In order to change it you have to log in to the router admin dashboard as described above and then find the Wi-Fi section. Depending on the router brand and model, you should search for Wireless, Wireless Security, Wi-Fi, and similar. When you access this section in the menu, you should see the Wireless Password field, also named ad Password, (PSK), and so on.
