Decentralizing Data: Brendan Playford's Quest with Masa Ishan Pandey: Hi Brendan, great to have you here for our "Behind the Startup" series. Please tell us about your background and what inspired you to create Masa? Brendan Playford: I became fascinated with crypto and blockchain technology in early 2013, while still living in the UK. I was an early Bitcoin miner, and got lucky solo mining the first blocks of DOGE. I used the proceeds to set up retail hardware businesses selling Bitcoin miners on eBay. Coming from a disadvantaged part of the UK with just a GPU and some time, I was able to unlock more value than I could imagine. I was hooked and saw that the future was open accessible technology for everyone - crypto delivers this. Masa started as a decentralized credit protocol, solving for increased access to credit. After seeing a bigger opportunity in transforming the current surveillance capitalism paradigm, where our data is monetized wholesale without our consent, Masa evolved into becoming the world’s personal data network. Where users can own their data and can realize the full value of it.  After seeing the rise of AI, we quickly realized that people all over the world are having their data and contributions on the internet scrapped and used to train models that drive billion dollar businesses, yet all of us receive no compensation for our data or contributions – we are changing that at Masa. Ishan Pandey: Can you give us an overview of Masa and its mission in building the world's largest decentralized personal data network? Brendan Playford: At Masa, we’re changing the way that data is sourced, aggregated, and consumed in the age of AI. Today’s personal data — from browsing history, app usage, your scroll time, to Twitter messages, emails, and more — is locked up in walled gardens, controlled by big tech. Our every action is tracked and monetized. Our personal data is resold under the guise of ‘consent’ upon using a platform, but not with a clear choice or understanding of how our data is being used or monetized. Users remain the product. Today this data landgrab is accelerated by the proliferation of AI with personal data consumed in vast amounts to train AI models and agents. With Masa, we’re on a mission to drive a new paradigm and bring a new permissionless data layer to the world. Where data is owned by all participants –  giving users the holy grail of self-sovereignty – complete control and the ability to monetize their data. Masa sits in the background and aggregates your massive digital footprint, making it private and secure for when you want to monetize it. Ishan Pandey: How does Masa differentiate itself from traditional data platforms and other decentralized data exchanges? Brendan Playford:  Masa is unique in that we specialize in user data that is typically siloed in big tech institutions. This comprises billions of detailed behavioral data points that accurately represent a user's digital persona. This personal user data is  the most valuable form of data, and is consumed in high volume user analytics, segmentation, audience creation, advertising and most critically training unbiased artificial-intelligence models on trustworthy data. Masa’s data is unique and proprietary – not scraped publicly available data or aggregated on-chain data. Masa’s data which is private by default and anonymized to be compliant with global regulations and is aggregated through partners and permissioned directly from users participating in the Masa Network. Further, users can become data aggregators themselves by scraping data through the Masa Chrome Extension. Masa is distinct and unique by giving users the ability to store and share their data privately while giving developers the ability to access high veracity and validated data to build a universe of innovative and hyper-personalized applications. For example, imagine AI agents trained on your preferences, behaviors, browsing and social behavior – your digital twin ready to help support you with your personal choices and productivity. Ishan Pandey: Could you explain the concept of Zero-Knowledge Soulbound Tokens (zkSBTs) and how they function within the Masa ecosystem? Brendan Playford: Masa invented zero-knowledge soulbound tokens, as debuted in the 2023 7th Cyber Security in Networking Conference. zkSBTs serve as an encrypted “personal data locker” for our users' data. With zkSBTs, a user can actively store their personal data on-chain and off-chain data in an encrypted soulbound token which is assigned to their digital identity. What’s so unique  about Masa’s zkSBTs is that a developer or application can request data from a user which can be verified without ever revealing the underlying data. For example, if a developer is requesting you to confirm you are above the age of 21, Masa only needs to provide a "yes" or "no" zero-knowledge proof without revealing your raw Date of Birth data to the developer. It’s a way for users to manage their own data, while ensuring the highest-level of privacy in a permissionless and fully decentralized way. Anyone is free to use our code and contribute – it's all open source! Ishan Pandey: Could you discuss the business model of Masa, particularly how it generates revenue and sustains its operations? Brendan Playford: The Masa Network is a data marketplace. We have a scalable data supply that drives a massive flywheel across multiple enterprise clients serving millions of users. Additionally, users are able to permission their data to be shared with developers or data buyers in exchange for compensation that is defined by the buyer or user of the data. Our enterprise web3 clients access aggregate user data for free through our Masa Analytics product – think private by default Google Analytics where you (the user) can monetize your data. Our web2 and web3 AI and Data clients bid on data types and use large amounts of data to train AI and machine learning models. The use cases for Masa’s data are mind-boggling and only limited by creativity. Masa generates revenue on fees charged for accessing data through the Masa Network – Masa Subnet and Masa Oracle Node – and from the data marketplace. Ishan Pandey: What challenges did you face during the development and growth of Masa, and how did you overcome them? Brendan Playford: From technical complexity to the bear market – there has been no shortage of challenges getting Masa to where it is – and this is only the start of a 20+ year vision. At Masa we turn every challenge into an opportunity. We focused on recruiting top talent and operating lean, while keeping focused so we can unlock hyper velocity to experiment and learn fast by rapid iteration at a velocity of a team twice or three times as big – this is our culture and DNA. Since we’ve invented so much technology at Masa, including zkSBTs, we had to build and engineer our own solutions, which required a lot of discipline and expertise to ship fast to production
By taking this focused – never scared to pivot approach –  Masa grew tremendously through the bear market. Nailing data product market fit with our analytics product, and growth campaigns – tightly coupling the grow, measure, iterate cycle for our clients and productizing the Masa DNA into our product for clients to use. Ishan Pandey: How do you envision the future of personal data ownership and privacy? Also with the increasing regulatory scrutiny on data privacy and AI, how does Masa navigate compliance and ensure ethical data practices? Brendan Playford: The increasing regulatory scrutiny on data privacy with the deprecation of cookies and GDPR becoming the de facto standard globally, coupled with the unbounded growth of AI, is the perfect storm of tailwinds for Masa – not only was this part of what inspired our model but the hypothesis we had is playing out before our eyes. Since users have very limited control over their data and receive no compensation for it, we wanted to introduce a model that disrupted the big tech monopoly on data – bringing trusted equitable access to data to everyone! At Masa, user data is always stored private-by-default – imagine a digital locker that is with you everywhere gobbling up all of your data ready for when you want to use it – Masa ensures a user maintains control and privacy over their data at all times. CoinList To Host The MASA Token Public Sale As It Launches The World’s Personal Data Network

1. What Are Soulbound Tokens (SBTs) and How Do They Work? Web3 today has an identity problem. It is missing a critical identity infrastructure layer for the next wave of web3 use cases to thrive. At Masa, we believe soulbound tokens used as an identity primitive is the answer. SBTs are designed to be the intersection between our unique identities, technology, and how we interact within a decentralized society. They are publicly visible, non-transferable, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that can serve as a web3 user’s identity that is intrinsically tied to their owners. Since they are non-transferable, SBTs authenticate the credentials of whoever holds them. First, there was email, then social accounts, and now there are SBTs - linking one's web3 wallet and activities with their identity while protecting privacy on-chain. At Masa, we wrap SBTs with some magic to allow for holistic identity use cases, including the management of linked data. 2. How are SBTs Different From Decentralized Identifiers (“DIDs”) and Verifiable Credentials (“VCs”)? Currently, the two existing identity primitives in web3 are: decentralized identities (“DIDs”) and verified credentials (“VCs”). What Are Some Challenges When It Comes to SBTs? SBTs are a new and innovative technological solution that are still finding their way into the fintech and web zeitgeist. In laymen’s terms, how do you plan on spending the money? We are focusing on expanding our senior team by finding the highest performing people who want to work in a decentralized organization (DAO) - this includes roles across engineering, growth, and operations. Given the scale of the vision we have, finding highly experienced engineers is critical. We have just hired a Head of People Operations to drive culture, recruiting, and performance across the organization. With the pre-seed behind us, and with our first partners going live we are raising a Seed Round to expand, and launch the DAO and the protocol's production release. What’s exciting about your traction to date? And how do you plan on measuring growth going forward? Masa is building on Celo and Ethereum, has 36,000 people signed up to the platform, 8 partners going live in the Masa App, and 2,100+ node operators on its live testnet that supports zero-knowledge private transactions and private smart contracts. Masa has seen double-digit growth each month as we’ve started rolling out our platform into different markets. The first credit products launching on the protocol include a credit builder loan, uncollateralized loans, and an SME line of credit through its app in June. We are focusing on two main drivers for growth and adoption of the platform; the number of NFT credit reports, and the number of partners providing loans through the Masa App. These two components drive private transaction volume to the private zero-knowledge layer which we expect to see continued growth in node operators from the current number live on the testnet. What are your revenue expectations over the next three years? The Masa platform drives protocol revenues through transaction fees on the private transaction layer, fees on loans originated through the platform (the majority of which goes to funding providers), and referral fees for partner loans issued through the Masa App. These fees are shared with validators and node operators who stake tokens to verify and relay private transactions - a percentage of these fees also accumulate in the DAO treasury. As a DAO we are focused on driving adoption of the protocol layer that enables private transactions,increasing the value of the token which is staked by validators and the DAO treasury. Our ambition is to be a globally adopted layer 1 private transaction layer for the entire DeFi credit ecosystem - this means growing to be a multi-billion dollar protocol that drives value for validators and node operators. At launch Masa will have a significant DAO treasury that will secure the long-term growth of the protocol. The north star metric we use to measure  adoption is the number of users who have created NFT credit reports on the platform by connecting off-chain data sources on-chain. What is your TAM (Total Addressable Market)? And what is your strategy to acquire the maximum share of this market? 95% of all lending in DeFi is collateralized with a high barrier to entry. Existing DeFI lenders are building for a world that doesn’t yet. With our data partnerships and integration we support over 10,000 data sources in 78 countries which addresses a market of 2.97B people. We are on track to create 5 million NFT credit reports over the next 18 months and onboarding over 100 lenders to the platform. Long term we want to be the ubiquitous decentralized credit layer for DeFi which means onboarding billions of users globally. In your funding raising pitch deck, what is your favorite slide? My favorite slide addresses our go-to-market for the next 18 months and our ambition in taking on a massive market. It not only demonstrates how incredibly huge the credit market is but it also shows how massive Masa will be by bringing a small bite of the global credit pie to DeFi. If we want to take DeFi mainstream the lowest hanging fruit to me is offering open access to credit services. We are very early on in the growth of DeFi, there are only 4.6M active users. Masa has the opportunity to double the number of users of DeFI wallets over the next 18 months alone by providing them with an NFT credit report. At 5m NFT credit profiles this represents a strong step forward in our mission to bring the next billion people to DeFi. What problem are you solving? And Why is now the time for your company to solve this? 3.5 billion people worldwide do not have access to credit-building services. DeFi is creating an alternate universe of finance, commerce, investment, and sources of capital for DeFi lenders to serve more customers.  DeFi innovation will profoundly transform the global economy and disrupt industries. It is starting to reshape the way people borrow and save and is remaking banking as we know it. DeFi lending has a profound role to play in this transformation. Key benefits of DeFi include greater security, speed, lower costs, a wide range of services - giving more choice, and the ability to unlock financial freedom through crypto holdings. In addition to these accessibility problems developers have no middleware connecting traditional Finance with DeFI AND they can’t access encrypted (private) financial data for smart contracts. We solve for both. What are the potential risks to the business? i.e. technology, regulatory, incumbents, legal, etc. There are several hurdles to the mass adoption of DeFi. These include: Scalability – A sustainable DeFi ecosystem will likely consist of interoperable blockchains. Gas Fees – The issue of gas fees needs to be addressed to enable financial inclusion. We are building on Celo which is both mobile friendly and has low gas fees. Institutional Adoption – Mass institutional adoption will likely follow widespread consumer adoption. Utility – Most DeFi platforms in the space are building for a future that does not exist yet. We need a platform now that can serve and integrate core centralized banking systems and bridge them to DeFi. To overcome these obstacles, we need to educate consumers and institutions on the benefits of DeFi. Currently, there are many, particularly in developed countries, who are comfortable with the status quo. These mainstream users who do not have an immediate incentive to learn about new and complex protocols and the disruptive technology enabling it. We need them on board in order to accelerate mass adoption of DeFi and ultimately achieve financial inclusion. What intellectual and digital property does the company own? Or intend to build/own? i.e. patents, patents pending, copyrights, trade secrets, trademarks, domains, bored apes, etc. We are planning to open source all aspects of the protocol over time - this process will be governed by members of the DAO and will be done under the philosophy of progressive decentralization. Why should we think Masa could grow to the moon?! There is an undeniable need to extend credit to billions of underserved individuals around the world. Without fair access to credit people cannot build leverage and increase their personal wealth. The fundamentals of wealth creation hinge upon access to credit. The current system does not serve the many, it serves the few. As a credit invisible person in the US - having immigrated here and only having 5 years of credit history I know how big the barriers are for accessing credit if you are not born into the system. Masa will succeed because we are enabling a more equitable future that provides access to financial services to an underserved global population, one of the most overlooked segments by traditional finance. Unlocking this market segment and aligning incentives through DeFi will drive massive growth of our platform. We will be the credit bureau (credit DAO) of the future, owned by all participants - not one central entity.
