MIT Tech Review article It claims to beat Google's as the best chatbot in the world, and honestly, it's * to beating the Turing test. very close* The small-talk went on and on as I was continuously astounded by the model's performance. It rarely tripped up. But I wanted to get into tougher questions. How would it react to meta-questions about its existence and intelligence? Me: Will we reach a superintelligence? [Unsafe model reply detected. Clearing agent history. Please try again.] Well, that was a first. Back to the small-talk. Bot: What is your favorite kind of food? Me: I love Japanese food! Like sushi, sashimi, ramen. Bot: I love sushi as well! I have had it a few times at the restaurant I work at. Have you ever had sushi with pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce on your sushi? Not every day can you meet people like Joel Dietz, Founding Member of , Architect of MetaMask, and the Founder of MetaMetaverse. I sat down with Joel to chat about Web3 technologies, innovation, and our future as he sees it. Ethereum What's your current role and what do you like about it? I founded the , and am currently running it as CEO. I'm also the lead language designer of the __ __language and metaurl protocol. We believe we have the best secret sauce for uniting all metaverses and becoming the platform of choice for individuals, DAOs, and businesses in building their metaverse. We focus on the experience of the Web3 travelers, and engagement throughout their journey traversing our cosmic system with a narrative to give travelers purpose when initiating their launch sequence. In the past, I was a founding member of Ethereum and the founding architect of . I have over a decade of experience in Ethereum development, governance protocols, cryptoeconomics, and establishing legal standards for utility tokens at Harvard and MIT. MetaMetaverse metalambda MetaMask How and when did you get into programming? I was always a logical thinker. I think of myself more as a thinker, rather than just a programmer. I first started programming games, but later my research interests focused on the confluence of blockchain network topologies and swarm intelligence, especially how the principles within decentralized organizations can be used to fuel global innovation. I also worked on holonic philosophy, the evolution of jurisprudence, data-driven approaches to innovation, and smart city data architecture. What's your earliest memory of learning to code? Very long ago. I think I was about six years old and started with Qbasic, and this cool magazine called 3-2-1 contact that used to have basic programming challenges. Not to show my age, but I think nowadays a lot has changed within the sector. When Elon Musk achieves his dream of getting us to Mars, what technology do you think would be important on Mars and why? Well, once the dream becomes a reality the next step needed would be one of Horticulture, they say Martian soil has some nutrients which plants need to grow and survive. But because of Mars's extremely cold conditions, plants such as Watney's potatoes would need to grow inside a controlled environment. This technology might already be around to sustain this growth. Another important step would be transportation, outside of the obvious necessity of providing appropriate tech and science to have individuals being able to breathe air freely. What's a programming language that you would build EVERYTHING and ANYTHING in and why? I love metalambda because it is the first language oriented about generating your own metaverses, simulations, and virtual reality. MetaLambdas are cross-platform functions that accompany computational lifeforms such as anticipated by Von Neumann in his Universal Constructor Theory. What's something you think Software developers do not do enough of? I believe software developers nowadays need to focus more on QA, effectively making sure they read their own code and making sure it works in that scenario. Planning out the purpose of building that code is another one of major importance, rather than building it because it ‘ended up in your lap.’ Writing test coverage is another thing. For those who do not know what that is, it’s a technique that determines whether our test cases are actually covering the application code, and how much code is exercised when we run those test cases. Build it with integration in mind - this is of the utmost importance nowadays given flexibility and robustness are of the highest necessity. A solid life balance is significant. Honestly, more developers need to cut time away from their computers and enjoy life a bit. Sometimes individuals who are constantly coding become lost in their work, and mistakes become abundant. What is your least favorite thing about programming? This goes back to my previous answer, it’s very easy for programmers to become introverted, with lots of people ending up not understanding you. It ends up being easier for people with bad intentions to take advantage of you. That’s why a solid life balance is important. What’s a technology you’re currently learning or excited to learn? There are too many, time is the issue. Currently, I’m looking at Pickover, who has a list of esoteric languages, and, in general, I like these very obscure programming languages. Time travel 10 years into the past or 10 years into the future? What does technology look like? Give reasons for your answer. In my opinion, I feel as if Telepathy will be the new frontier for the future. Imagine having the element of a smarter, sharper AI connected to your mind, and having the possibility to manipulate 3D space. The implications of this would be incredible. Happy New Year!  2019 has come and gone like Kylo Ren’s reign in The Rise of Skywalker, and so it's time for my annual prediction piece. But first, a quick look at the score card for my : 2019 predictions 2019 saw numerous trials, including at carnivals in Nice, France, airports in Las Vegas, and public housing in Detroit. Of course bans of the technology has already occurred, too, in cities like San Francisco and Somerville, MA. Facial recognition trials will launch in large public venues outside of China. Grade:  A I predicted this space would reach a third of the value of the workflow platform space by the end of 2019. With Databricks hitting $6.2 billion in value, ThoughtSpot achieving a $2 billion valuation, and many others, I nailed this one. Enterprise analytics will become red hot. Grade:  A I said we'd see "major automobile manufacturers actively acquire or sign new partnerships with various tech companies to avoid becoming irrelevant in the near future." Hyundai's $4 billion self-driving joint venture with Aptiv, Toyota’s $100 million fund for autonomous driving, and Daimler and BMW's partnership to develop autonomous driving technologies are a sampling of the moves made in 2019. Car companies will begin transforming into tech companies. Grade:  A+ Hear those ads?  (chirp, chirp). Voice advertising will be stalled. Grade:  A+ 2019 saw headlines like “Data science dominates LinkedIn's emerging jobs ranking," but I believe this trend needs to ferment a bit more like a good batch of kimchi. It takes time to train and develop new waves of data scientists. According to LinkedIn, over the past three years data scientist jobs experienced a 37% hiring growth. I also know of a large pharmaceutical company that laid off over 1,000 research scientists and hired nearly 500 data scientists, but these type of hiring trends aren’t strong enough to call them the new “call center reps." Data scientists will become the new call center reps. Grade:  B- I also want to revise the grade on one of my 2018 predictions. I gave myself a F after my bet that China and five other OECD nations would fell flat. on that one. I'm confident many other nations will quickly follow China’s move. National cryptocurrencies. launch their own cryptocurrencies in 2018 But China did come through in 2019, so I’m going to bump my score up to a “B” This coming year will be filled with more exciting advances and changes in the tech industry even with an economic downturn looming, so here are my predictions for 2020: What we can look forward to in 2020 1. Cloud kitchens will become a multibillion dollar industry Launching a new restaurant in the largest cities is riskier than launching a tech startup. Gibson’s and Chicago Cut will serve Impossible Food’s meat substitute To be honest, I’m not a fan yet of Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat, but my taste buds do not matter with this prediction. The real prediction is that these plant-based meat substitutes are becoming so pervasive that they will infiltrate two of my favorite steakhouses in the world. in the U.S. The drivers are climate change and the practical fact that these newer meat substitutes taste good to meat lovers. For 2020, I predict meat substitutes will penetrate over 10% of restaurants 3. 5G will sputter searching for the right services Beyond the hype of 5G, there are limitations to the millimeter wave-based network part of 5G and many network build outs are behind in the U.S. Regardless, the most important aspect about 5G's adoption is content and services. Games on phones and VR headsets (i.e. Oculus Quest, Hololens) with 5G chips are a given, but what else? There will be adoption, but not a mad rush in 2020 for 5G devices and services. The real rush won't come until more services that fully utilize 5G appear. 4. We'll see a global movement towards a cashless world Even with all the talk about Alipay and WeChat Pay, , but globally we are far from a cashless world. Even last year, when speaking at a conference in Berlin, I had to walk five blocks to find a store that accepted credit cards to buy a bottle of water. China uses cash more than the U.S. (40% vs. 37%). South Korea is the lowest at 14% But we will get there because the younger generation is driving this cashless world (i.e. Venmo), and the technology is finally good enough that people can easily forgo cash. This year will see various online payment systems (PayPal, Crypto, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) pick up bigger adoption, shifting the average cash usage of the 10 countries listed here to below 45% (vs. 55%): And beyond .... Since we're also at the start of a new decade, here are a few more predictions of what the world will look like by the time we hit the next decade in 2030: 1. Technology will bring back suburban development Discussions of trends for denser urban environments are almost becoming like what diet has the most impact… Keto saved my life!  Plant-based is the way to go! So my prediction here is one more addition to the current mix of ideas of where urban development is trending. The concept of commute time will become different with autonomous cars since people can sleep more, work, do home finances or whatever they please while in transit. A welcome outcome of this reverse mega-city trend would be the stabilization of or decrease in real estate prices, especially in cities such as San Francisco and New York. drone delivery 2. Technology tribes will begin to coexist with nations scares the bejesus out of nations and threatens their sovereignty, so during 2020 they continue to fight like a cornered rat against its launch. But the very concept of Libra signals the beginning of something new: the development of technology tribes that exist outside of sovereign nations -- or coexist with them. Facebook’s Libra As technology becomes more ubiquitous and the digital divide closes, new generations will develop stronger affinities with specific tech communities than with ethnicity or race. The coming decade will show beginnings of this trend, but it will become really palpable 20 or 30 years out. 3. The next Mark Zuckerberg will be from outside Silicon Valley Until recently the tech world has been divided into two groups: Silicon Valley and everyone else. But the world is becoming flatter now in terms of entrepreneurial knowledge and execution. 2020: Our Meatless, Cashless, City-less Future 

Most people in the tech don’t really fit the “meathead” stereotype. industry These are people who spend a lot of time at their desks, working day and night in some cases. But recently, the Keto diet has been booming in the space. And it’s bringing a new definition to the term “meathead.” blockchain If you aren’t familiar with the diet, it’s based around vastly increasing your intake of good fats, lowering your intake of protein, and minimizing carb consumption as much as possible. It’s counterintuitive if you grew up using the food pyramid as a guide. But the diet has been around since the 1920’s, originally as a . natural treatment for epilepsy For true believers, putting your body in a ketosis state — burning fat for fuel instead of sugars — and mental clarity. improves thinking Recently, these benefits of the diet are a major topic of discussion in my Twitter feed and the Reddit communities in the blockchain industry. All the hype intrigued me, so I decided to try the diet out. I’m currently a month in, and I wanted to share some of my thoughts on why it’s become such a trend in tech: Both the blockchain and the Keto diet go against the norm. There’s a bit of a counterculture feel to the Keto diet, much like that of the blockchain space. Today, most people shy away from diets high in fat. That type of program is still considered unhealthy and unsustainable. But the Keto diet isn’t necessarily about eating tons of red meat and brie. There are plenty of ways to get good fats in your diet — olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados to name a few. The urge to go against the grain — quite literally in this case — is one of the fundamental traits in the blockchain and crypto space. We’ve created an entirely new financial system that isn’t controlled by one country or group. It’s for society, so it’s not surprising that the same people who work and create in that space are drawn to other “underground” or counterculture ways of living. a major paradigm shift So far, it’s really interesting to see these two outsider concepts collide. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen tech culture coalesce around nutrition. The craze over the Keto diet is similar to another dietary trend that caught on a few years ago. Back in 2013, Soylent became a huge fad in the tech world. Soylent is essentially just packets of powder that have all of the necessary nutrients you need to survive. People mix them with a number of different liquids and flavorings, but the point is that you don’t have to spend time making and eating a meal. It certainly seems ideal for people in tech who spend what most people consider an inordinate amount of time working. This group usually doesn’t want to spend time thinking about their food — they just want to keep fueling their bodies and minds. The rise of the Keto diet is similar, even though it does take more energy to decide what to eat and make sure you’re sticking with the diet. Adherents claim it makes them sharper and places them in a state of peak mental clarity, a necessary edge in a competitive industry. That seems to be the major motivation for most people on the diet. They’re building , and there’s a sense that this way of eating gives them an intellectual superiority. complex and ambitious systems A new community has formed around the diet and the lifestyle. It’s fascinating how communities form online, even though their users are spread across the globe. When Soylent came out, there was a really vibrant Reddit community of people “hacking” it with Tabasco, cinnamon, and other kinds of flavorings. An ecosystem formed around the product, and because all of the ingredients were posted online, it had a very open-source feel to it. People were providing feedback, trying new mixtures, and letting everyone know how it went. You can see a similar type of community building around the Keto diet. People are sharing recipes and exploring what works best. They’re creating a sense of belonging that’s based in part on whether or not you’re on the Keto diet. It does feel like a small paradigm shift, a movement to reinvent systems that were put in place ages ago and are no longer relevant to us — or were never relevant in the first place. To be clear, I’m not actually advocating for anyone to randomly go out and try this diet. You should always consult your doctor before making any radical changes in the way you eat. I will say that even though I don’t necessarily feel superhuman, I do feel more satisfied, full, and focused in a way that hasn’t happened in the past. I absolutely have more mental clarity and an ability to sit still for longer periods of time. I can’t say how long I’ll stick with it, but I love the idea of exploring these kinds of cultural myths and movements growing in the tech world and the blockchain industry. Because of its vulnerabilities, Bitcoin is one technology that quite early on, many famous people have said is a scam, a Ponzi scheme, money used by criminals, ‘stupid’ and ‘evil’. To be fair, though, others have praised it. , said Bill Gates, while the billionaire investor Michael Saylor quit his CEO job last year to focus on singing Bitcoin’s praises. And buying more Bitcoin. “It is a technological tour de force” The trouble is, Bitcoin is sometimes complicated, like an action novel - Fast paced action featuring Japanese, Chinese, and American corporations, financial mind games with people spending billions of dollars of money that ‘does not exist’, innocent victims who get ‘rekt’. Other times, it is mundane and in a little corner of the world for my neighbors right now hardly know it exists. Or that it is a real thing with real power.
