I attend many tech conferences around Europe (and occasionally the World), and Africa is always underrepresented. I was delighted to receive an invite to , an annual event that aims to bridge the European and African entrepreneurial scenes. Entering the Microsoft offices in Berlin for the event, a different crowd greeted me from typical tech and startup events, which was an incredible sight to see. Afrolynk The day started with a round of drumming to bring people into the room and began a solid day of panels and keynotes. Attendees are sharply and colorfully dressed, energetic, and the variety of languages spoken around the venue highlights the multiculturalism of the African continent. The Barriers Africa holds 20% of the world’s population, 30% of its land and resources, but only 1–2% of global GDP. Many throughout the day argued that we are often distracted by entrepreneurship at a grand scale. They argued that we forget that across the continent are thousands of small businesses providing valuable services to their local communities. Relevant to technology, this includes projects such as , which creates mesh networks of internet access across Africa that locals pay these businesses to access. This model of small peer-to-peer businesses is prevalent in Africa and one that many local entrepreneurs emulate. So much so, that one startup, is launching a new project, the “Hustla MBA,” low-level (and without the negative connotations many associate with the term) hustling is a typical lifestyle in Africa. The project is one of many that acknowledged issues in Africa, and instead of complaining about them, tackled them head-on. The project also aims to change people’s attitudes toward education, a problem mentioned by many. Hi guys, we’re the Sirius (SIRX), developer team and we’re working on a new consensus called Reputation-Weighted Proof-of-Stake (RWPoS) that’ll allow Visa (2000 tps+) transaction speeds while maintaining a degree of centralization that is as low as possible. We’d like to give a short summary of it, and then show you our results so far. algorithm Background By the CAP theorem, increasing the throughput of a blockchain necessarily decreases either decentralization or . Some newer consensus algorithms favour throughput at the expense of decentralization. Some consortium blockchains for example, due to their high degree of centralization and voting mechanics, are vulnerable to a number of economic incentives to bribe block producers or master node operators. security Older algorithms don’t suffer from these problems, but won’t scale. RWPoS solves this by balancing speed and centralization, without introducing any true master nodes or extremely small groups of block producers, and preserving decentralized consensus while increasing transaction speed. Rating miners Since we want the voting process to be immune to political agendas and bribes, we can give each miner or output (we’re working with a Proof-of-Stake UTXO-based chain, offering low energy use, and increased privacy over the account model) a score based on his consistency of block contributions, defined by the standard deviation of time between contributions, and history of contributed blocks measured over the whole chain, and then increase the weight of his stake by this score. Now let’s say we have a lot of miners, but only a few hundred are staking on a well-connected VPS with >95% uptime. What we’ll end up with after a while of scoring is a group of miners who are well connected, consistent and invested in the chain for a longer period of time, which increases security.
