With Apple, Goldman Sachs can bring a solid and promising user base to its new retail bank, this is indeed a very attractive deal for Goldman Sachs. However, from the information and articles that have been published so far, we can infer that Apple and Goldman Sachs are teasing a new solution which will utilize crypto and blockchain technology, This will lead to the “Mass Adoption” that the crypto community has been hoping for. This Marvel vs DC style competition in the blockchain is what we should pay attention: Team Bakkt vs Team Goldman Sachs/ Apple. Which “team” will usher in a new era for blockchain and crypto? They’re releasing all kinds of new products quietly on their website without the need for a big event — granted, none of these products have significant changes. You had the new IMAX the other day, there were some new iPads in the form of the new iPad Mini, new iPad Air, and then today they come out with some brand new AirPods which were rumoured. Apple was likely to refresh the AirPods soon, and now they’ve done it. They’ve changed some things. The new products a bit more competitive and it actually implements a feature that the have. Probably the most significant difference from the new ones to the old ones is the fact that the new ones now can charge wirelessly via a wireless charging case. Galaxy Buds Now, you can still purchase the new version of AirPods without that case for a lower price. So you are paying a premium for the wireless charge case; putting the difference between the Galaxy Buds from Samsung and the AirPods price-wise even further apart. So the wireless case version of the U.S. and then the original charge case with the new AirPods the type that you have to plug in via the proprietary lightning cable those will be the same price as the old . They’ll just replace that old product. AirPods 2 will be $200 Air Pods at $159 AirPods 2 Prices Now on top of that, if you just want to upgrade the case on your current AirPods to the wireless case, you can purchase that for $79. So these are some pretty hefty price tags for these types of products. Of course, it’s a $40 premium just to get the wireless charging, it would have been nice to see Apple give you wireless charging at the same price point as the original AirPods and just get rid of the charge case that doesn’t support wireless charging. So the other difference is here, you have a new chip they’re calling it the H1 Chip, a new brain inside of the AirPods which is going to improve the performance of the AirPods in various ways. It’s going to allow them to connect more quickly to your devices, it’s going to allow them to switch between devices more quickly, let you answer phone calls more quickly, and it will extend the battery life on talk time. It’s just a more efficient, more advanced chip. The other thing it’s going to be able to do is to allow you to launch Siri only via voice by saying “Hey Siri!”. Now the other weird piece about this announcement is the fact that Apple still doesn’t make a wireless charger of their own. Of course, there’s been this rumour around this AirPower product which it does seem like Apple is going to make. They’ve had this floating around they even had it on their website at one point that supposedly can charge an iPhone, your AirPods, and an Apple watch all-in-one device. Now granted these devices all support the wireless Qi standard so you could drop them onto a third party wireless charger. You could even charge these new AirPods on a Samsung or Google charger if you want just to rub it in a little bit more.But anyhow in the meantime, we’re waiting for an official Apple solution for wireless charging on all these new wireless charge capable devices. Charging Pad The other difference on the new AirPods particularly on the wireless chargecases there’s now an LED on the front to tell you that you’re actively charging when you are on a wireless charge pad. Now we don’t know anything about the sound yet. So I expect them to sound the same as well. AirPods1 I know a lot of people out there we’re expecting a more prominent change here they wanted something more substantial or significant. There was the talk of black AirPods which I know got a lot of people excited, they didn’t want the typical white look, they wanted something more stealth, renders were floating around. So, no black AirPods as of right now, no product red AirPods as of right now. They look identical. You just get the new chip, the wireless charge case and some performance improvements with a price tag to match. I still think they’re a bit expensive for what they are compared to the competitors on the market as the that delivering wireless charging in a fully wireless earbud device for . Now the AirPods 2 with the wireless charge case are at $200, almost double the price. But hey that’s what Apple does! You pay a premium for the convenience. Galaxy Buds $129 As far as upgrading, if your Gen 1 user of AirPods, if you just recently spent $160 on AirPods version 1, I don’t think there’s really any reason here to rush out and get the new pair. You can get the wireless charge case if you really want it, in fact, you could also get the wireless charge case adapter from a third-party company named . It’s like a rubber case that you put on the outside of the current , and that gives it wireless charging. It’s a lot cheaper than $80. East Brooklyn Labs AirPods Charging Case If you want them, you can buy them through the shipping dates are already starting to slip it’s crazy how popular these things are. People are already buying them. I saw the report on MacRumors, they’re saying that the ship dates already slipping on the AirPods 2. People are savages, they’re out there, they love their Apple products, you can’t deny it. AirPods version 2, people are buying them!

Are The AirPods 2 Worth It?

As far as iPhones go, throughout the years we’ve seen a number of issues, particularly right after launching a new one, and while I quite enjoy blaming Tim Cook for everything between the Titanic sinking and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Apple “gates” have been around forever, so yes, there are things that even Steve did wrong, and we should all probably stop wishing him back to life. Stop it! He’d look like a zombie, and while most people consider zombies awesome on screens, trust me, no one wants to see that sh*t in real life! I’ve had three iPhones so far. A 4S, a 6S and now an XS. You probably picked up on the patterns there. I don’t replace my phone often and I tend to go for the “S” iteration because for me this is the iteration that I see as beyond just an MVP. While the iPhone X is nice and can’t say I was not tempted to purchase it, waiting its second iteration out, was a good strategy. Having said that, it looks like this “S” model does come with its own “gate”, which I am calling . #SleepGate Historical Context Bought aforementioned phone on store launch date, by casually walking into the store a couple minutes after 9:00 a.m. I ain’t no sheep standing in line like a hobo eejit. I never did that, I’m too cool to do that, and I will forever unapologetically make fun of those who do. There is a fine line between being brand loyal and a feckin’ eejit, and that line looks something like this: People queueing in Lodon for the new iPhone And I know that being London means it’s Britain, and the Brits have turned queueing into a national sport, queueing just for the sake of doing it, but come on! It’s a bloody phone! So bought phone, and that same day, in the evening I set the whole thing up from my previous iPhone 6S iCloud backup. All dandy, nothing smoking or crashing, smooth setup, zero issues. As I would normally do, I hooked it up to the charger before sleep, went to bed, had a nice dream of Emma Stone and woke up the next day expecting no surprises for the rest of the weekend. Imagine then my surprise when I disconnected my phone from the charger and I was met with a popup telling me I need to put my passcode in after a restart to enable face id. Odd, but I tried to rationalise it down to maybe iCloud doing some syncing at night, and triggering a restart after it finished. However, that wasn’t the case… Telltale Signs I am a software engineer, therefore I tend to be curious about odd behaviours, so I decided to dig a bit deeper and not ignore completely the event. Fortunately iOS12 comes with a new battery stats feature ( ). Tapping on it, stats showed no information available for an entire hour. Now, that’s more than odd. That can only mean the phone was completely shut down for an hour. I decided to keep an eye on things and the next morning when I got the same popup of needing my passcode because of a restart, I checked the battery stats again. Same story. Not at the exact same time, but essentially for an hour my phone was completely off. Right. That ain’t right. Digging Deeper A graph could potentially be off and buggy in a newly released iOS, so I did not want to completely rely on it. Many don’t know this, but there is a view in iOS that lets you see the analytics of your phone’s software events, a log of sorts, exposing all sorts of valuable information to those who know what to look for. It’s fairly simple to find it, though one might argue it’s hidden under one of the unlikeliest settings: privacy. Sequence of steps: settings > privacy > scroll all the way down > analytics > analytics data You’ll be presented with a list of logs. What you are looking for is a log entry having either or in its name, and when you read panic, you probably should panic as there’s literally nothing under the Sun that’s good and starts with ! Not even the Panic at the Disco band. For a rock band they seriously suck! Just listen to this. Sounds like every other pop song out there… “panic_full” “panic_base” “panic” Anyhow, back to your panic logs, opening either of them will show you a lot of programming mumbo-jumbo, but you’re looking for a time-stamp telling you the exact time your phone crashed and was forced to restart. If you keep reading the log details you’ll also see something mentioning failing. deep sleep Is it a Software Issue? Unlikely, and here’s how I reached that conclusion. First of all, all the apps I had installed were exactly the same as they were on the 6S with iOS12. I had zero issues there, in fact, iOS12 sped up my old 6S to such an extent, it felt new. Secondly, it always happened while I wasn’t actively using the phone, so it was unlikely that an app would trigger the crash. Thirdly, I tried two separate iCloud restores and an iTunes clean install as well, as instructed by Apple Support. The issue still kept happening. Finally, I am not alone with this issue. Other iPhone XS and XS Max users seem to have the same problem and users are voicing their concerns on on various forum . Macrumors threads Solution Apple Support advised me twice to take the phone into the nearest apple authorised service provider or Apple store and get it swapped out if the clean install doesn’t solve the problem. So, if your device is less than 14 days old, they’re more than willing to swap it out for a new one on the spot or within a few hours. Usually if it was an Apple place that is usually within 14 days it can be returned, depending on the region. — M. Apple Senior Support Advisor And that’s exactly what I did. In my case being the nearest AASP, I popped into their store, explained my experience with the new phone, and left it in for a quick check. Three hours later, I had a new phone in my pocket. The verdict from their tech team was pretty much identical to what Apple support told me. CompuB Panic events like these simply shouldn’t happen on a device this new. Obviously events like these can be a bit stressful for people, and when there’s little to no information out there yet about a potentially widespread issue, people can feel unsure of what to do or how to act. Steve Jobs 2x2 matrix circa 1997 I’ve been using products since I first bought an Apple IIe in 1983. While there was a period during the 1990s where I used primarily Windows computers for work, I switched back to the Mac about 15 years ago and haven’t looked back. Until now. Apple There have been a series of decisions by Apple that remind me a great deal of the decisions made by Apple in the ‘90s before the return of Steve Jobs as CEO. This isn’t about removing the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive. This is about the general user experience for an Apple consumer, like myself. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, Apple was scattered and working on way too many products. He sketched out the 2x2 matrix pictured above, focusing on desktop computers for consumers and professionals, and portable computers for consumers and professionals. If you now look at the lineup for iPhones or iPads or MacBooks, you see literally dozens of configurations and have to do way too much thinking to make a decision about what to buy. I own an iPhone 7, and while I wasn’t happy about the removal of the headphone jack, I’ve dealt with it. There are many situations where I’d like to charge my phone and listen to music on my phone (for example, on this flight I’m on right now), but I can get around it in this situation by using my Mac. Here’s a question for Apple: how do you release your 2 flagship products (iPhone and Macbook Pro) with different connectors for audio and power? After just convincing us that Lightning is the way to go for charging an iPhone, we get introduced to a new USB-C connector for power on a Pro. Why not put USB-C on the iPhone then? And the MacBook Pro gets an audio jack, but not the iPhone, a device that is used for talking and listening to music? The lack of consistency here feels like 2 different groups who aren’t talking to each other. MacBook My 4 year old 13" MacBook Pro has had a battery issue (only 30–45 minutes of battery life) for 6 months. The repair would require me to send my MacBook away for at least 4 days, which is not something I can do running a startup right now. Apple suggested that I just buy another MacBook 6 months ago, transfer over all of my stuff, send in the repair, and then return the MacBook. Between the hassle of setting up a new machine (which usually takes me hours over a weekend), and the slimy feeling of using a MacBook for a week (in spite of it being Apple’s suggestion), I decided to just wait. I anxiously awaited the release of the new MacBook Pros this fall, and was somewhat disappointed with the announcements in October. But given my situation, I went ahead and ordered the new 13" MacBook Pro, officially named “MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports),” a name which provides a hint of the issue here. Yes, it’s a beautiful Space Gray. Yes, it’s the thinnest lightest MacBook Pro ever. Yes, using your fingerprint to unlock it is amazing. And yes, after almost 2 weeks of trying to use it, I’m returning a MacBook Pro to Apple for the first time in my life. I just placed an order for the previous generation MacBook Pro. My goal here is not to beat up Apple, but rather to help educate others who might run into the same issues I’ve run into. And maybe Phil or Craig or Tim will hear the challenges their loyal customers are encountering and try to fix them. First the positives. This is a gorgeous piece of hardware. It is thin and light. The screen is beautiful. It’s fast and responsive. Touch ID on a computer is great. The TouchBar is an interesting innovation and the hardware is nice, but the lack of static keys for escape, volume, brightness, etc. present issues (more below). But unfortunately the cons are outweighing the pros. Here’s a summary of some of the issues I’ve faced: MagSafe Power: When I first heard MagSafe was being removed, I honestly didn’t worry too much about it. But through this process, I’ve realized that I plug into power between 2–5 times per day, docking with Apple monitors at work and at home, or working in a hotel room. There is no doubt that replacing MagSafe with a USB-C port is a mistake. For me, it’s not about the safety aspect, it’s about the convenience of plugging in and disconnecting. I can do it with my eyes closed with MagSafe. With USB-C, I have to actually tilt the computer so I can see the port and plug into it. It may seem like a minor issue, but do it 4 times per day and you’ll change your mind. This doesn’t take into account the fact that my beautiful Apple Display can no longer provide video without a dongle, and can no longer power my MacBook Pro, requiring a new power adapter (which is now sold in 3 separate pieces!) both at home and at work. Bugs: I’ve noticed two pretty significant bugs so far. First, there are graphics issues I’ve never seen on a Mac before. I see random solid color triangles occasionally when windows are being drawn. Seems like a graphics chip issue and definitely not ready for prime time. The second bug I’ve seen involves the new trackpad. I frequently use my left index finger to click on a file and hold, then use my right index finger to press and hold as I drag a file to another location. The trackpad regularly has issues with this standard movement and I have not yet been able to figure out how to fix it. I suspect it has something to do with palm detection or something similar, but it happens every day, multiple times per day. TouchBar: I watch a significant amount of media on my laptop. Whether it’s a video on the web, or streaming a TV show, on my current trip, I’ve probably had to use media controls over 100 times in 3 days. While the TouchBar is a good idea, I use the mute and volume up/down buttons so frequently that I need instant access. For example, when watching a streaming NBC show yesterday, every time a commercial came on, the volume would go up 25%. So I had to lower it, then raise it back when the show started again. Dongles: I couldn’t believe that I had to spend $400 on dongles. Yes, between the various power adapters for home/work, extenders, HDMI converters, etc. it was over $400. You might see a trend here. Most of these issues are small issues. They take just a second. But what pushed me over the edge is the addition of all of those seconds. It adds up to minutes of lost productivity every day, and in the end, having a slightly smaller lighter machine does not outweigh these issues. Then there are the more esoteric issues. The glowing Apple logo and the famous Mac startup chime are both gone. I understand that lighting that logo probably added a few millimeters of thickness to the lid, so I get that, but the chime? In spite of the fact that the chime is usually only heard when there’s an issue requiring a restart, that sound comes from the soul of the MacIntosh. Every time I hear it, it takes me back to my first Mac with the tiny screen, 3.5" floppy drive, and ImageWriter printer. Maybe I’m just old and nostalgic, but I have to believe that decision was a mistake. I realize I am most likely just pushing out some of these challenges (like buying new power adapters everywhere and monitor replacements) a few years. But by then, maybe Apple will be using the latest Intel processor generation and will have fixed some of their issues. I for one, can’t wait for the arrival of MagSafe 3! Update December 14, 2016: A few updates since I published this: I bought a previous generation 13" MacBook Pro and have been using it for almost a week. I couldn’t be happier with the switch back. No more dongles, my Apple monitors work just great, the keyboard is awesome, and the machine is fast and reasonably priced. I think the display is slightly worse, but I mostly use external monitors and I won’t notice after a few weeks of use. The biggest thing I miss is the Touch ID for logging in. But the size/weight, Touch Bar and keyboard are not missed even a small amount. I suspected I was not getting great battery life, but I rarely need more than 2 hours since I mostly dock. However, since I published this, a number of reports about the 4–5 hour battery life of the new MacBook Pro have surfaced. Apple and MacBooks and Dongles, Oh My!

There is an appealing idea which has been floating around in the internet for a while: Apple could transition from Intel x86 processors to ARM-based CPUs designed by Apple itself. I think that this moment has finally arrived. In a certain way this transition sounds to me like the classical tale of disruptive innovation. An emerging is not suitable to be used in an existing market because its characteristics are inferior compared to those of the current one. However this new technology might introduce features which makes it suitable for a secondary market. In this secondary market the technology is further developed and thanks to its newness generally there is room for substantial improvement. As the new technology matures it becomes suitable also for the primary market. Moreover the improved characteristics surely make it an optimal choice in the secondary market. At the end, the combination of those benefits could lead the new technology to definitively displace the current one of the primary market. technology Need an example? There are fairly good chances that you have one in your hands. If you are reading this article in a laptop consider that its technology was originally designed for the niche of mobile computing. Only at a later time laptops rose to become the most common form of computing. Otherwise if you are reading this article in a smartphone or a tablet, consider how mobile devices are displacing computers. The A series SoC Along with the iPad, Apple introduced the “A” series family of SoC (System on Chip) which includes an ARM based CPU to power its mobile devices. “A” series CPUs are optimized for mobile devices and trade off computational performance in favor of power efficiency, smaller dimensions, and an architecture without fans (which are noisy and are a point of failure as they are one of the last moving part of modern computing devices). What is striking for me is that Apple has been working a lot on the computation performance of its CPUs. Recently, the performance of the A series chip is starting to be good enough for consumer computing: the iPhone 7 A10 chip is faster than some Macbooks currently on sale. The iPhone 7 is also faster than the iPad Pro. This is interesting because the iPad Pro features the A9X chip, which derives from the A9 found in the iPhone 6s and is roughly 25% more powerful because there is more room than in the iPad Pro. It is possible therefore to imagine that the A10 CPU found in the iPhone 7 could be optimized for laptops and desktops in a similar but more prominent way in which A9 was improved to create the A9X for the iPad Pro. This would translate into CPUs with performances good enough for the general consumer, which uses the computer mostly for browsing the internet and running office applications, and therefore could enjoy the benefits developed for mobile devices. Why I think the time has come now? “A” series CPUs look ready and Macs haven’t been updated in ages. If you have any doubt that something is going on, just look at the MacRumors Buyer’s Guide. Advantages for the customers The advantages for the customers would be the following: longer battery life thinner computers no fans a completely silent system cooler laptops Besides what I have already said, there is another intriguing idea: the support of macOS on the iPad Pro. This would allow Apple to make a tablet a la Microsoft’s Surface Pro. I’m quite sure Apple would consider this option only if they can find a twist which would allow them to market their solution as completely superior. I think that there is room for Apple to do this. A 13" inch iPad Pro is basically a Macbook Air without a keyboard and a trackpad. Microsoft’s proposal is a good implementation of this idea but it is not flawless yet. Specifically I’m referring to the keyboard attachment design, which is good but still a bit cumbersome, and to the less-than-elegant handling of the coexistence of touch and cursor based interfaces that characterizes Windows. I think that this is the future for Apple. I don’t see iOS and macOS as two separates operating systems in 10 years from now. Pros for Apple Unique competitive advantage. Having a custom processor would help to further differentiate the Mac in the personal computer category. This would be a very big barrier to overcome for competitors as a huge size is required to develop a custom processor. Huge economies of scale which Macs could take advantage of. More than 1 billion of iPhones have been shipped. Unification of the computing architecture. Standardization would allow to greatly concentrate the energies currently used to develop parallel features in macOS and iOS. Total control of the technology. Apple has always aimed to have a complete control of its technologies. This kind of control allows to introduce features which are difficult for the competitors to reproduce. For example Apple introduced the Apple A10 Fusion processor with the iPhone7. This processor has 4 cores: two guarantee high performances and two are energy efficient. Apple uses a high performance core only for instructions which require computational power. This greatly increases the battery life of the iPhone. Apple can decide when to use the high performance cores because they control the operating system and the tooling used compile the applications. Different pieces of the architecture need to be tuned in order to extract the most of the gains from this feature. Currently there is no other competitor in such a position. It is feasible to change the architecture and Apple has already done a similar migration with success: in 2005 Apple switched from the IBM PowerPC architecture to the Intel’s x86. Cons for Apple Applications would need to be ported to the new architecture. However, most of the Apps have been ported to iOS so the majority of code optimized for the Intel platform has been adapted to take advantage of the A series processors features. Moreover a translation layer, which would allow the code to run in a different platform with a performance hit, could be implemented. Apple has already done a lot of related work with a technology called bitcode that they introduced in 2015. Prosumers want a lot of power. From the point of view of Apple the advantage in the consumer segment would be more than just offset the dissatisfaction of the prosumer segment, which nowadays is very small in the company customer base. The company has already proved that it is comfortable in accepting this trade off with other choices in the past. To mitigate the cons apple could also opt to ship its CPUs along Intel processor. This could be done only in the prosumer Macs. Conclusion On the 27th of October we likely will discover if I’m correct. If my predictions will reveal to be untrue, I would hope that an innovation with similar magnitudo will be introduced for the event. Otherwise it would be hard for me to find a reason why Macs have not been updated for such a long time. Actually it would be very fun if the event of 27th of October is not about the Mac but about Apple Watch bands. If my prediction will reveal to be true, in one way or the other, this strategy will make one of the most interesting case studies of innovation strategy for schools around the world. It would mean that Apple is cooping with what in management is called the Innovator’s Dilemma. business

Will Apple move away from Intel?

Now, go and search for these keywords in your current job listings and see for yourself you are already looking for such candidates. With 500,000 teens entering adulthood in the upcoming 10 years (in the US), and with direct and indirect annual costs of US$ 236 Billion to the American taxpayer, hiring autistic people and providing them with the professional fulfillment is both socially and economically right. Being more diverse means getting more diverse customers = more income. 2. How do I even start: You should start with a pilot, nothing more. That means 1-2 hires in one location to get things going and learn (like startups that need to get to the market as soon as possible in order to get real feedback). Find a self-starter who can orchestrate everything and cares about the cause + see the great potential. Among others they will need to: Together with HR, D&I and management decide what roles will you hire for. The goal is to hire the full-time employee for a meaningful role. A major factor will be the right manager and the right team, which need to be supportive and inclusive as well as dedicate the extra time. right Decide on which location (if the company has several) will they hire based on the right team, managers and the company’s need. Write the job description together with the hiring manager and HR. Design a proper screening process of candidates with the hiring managers and HR (more on that below) based on the job qualifications. Make sure you are able to accommodate the needs of your autistic employees (e.g. providing noise cancelation earphones, enable modification of the light for your autistic employees if needed, find proper space, etc.).
