AA aims to enhance user accessibility and facilitate the expansion of functionalities. Anticipatedly, the deployment of AA is poised to attract a broad spectrum of new users and ignite further innovation in DApps. In this paper, we elucidate the underlying operating mechanisms of this new concept, as well as provide a review of concurrent advancements in accounts, wallets, and standards related to its development. We step further by conducting a preliminary security evaluation to qualitatively assess the extent of security enhancements achieved through AA updates. —Ethereum, Account Abstraction, EOA Index Terms I. INTRODUCTION Accounts within the Ethereum ecosystem [1] serve as the bedrock for asset querying, storage, and transactions, constituting a pivotal element of its infrastructure. However, the present account design poses challenges for Web2 users due to its complicated design. Ethereum classifies accounts into two types [2], namely, externally owned accounts (EOA) and contract accounts (CA)[1]. EOA is controlled by private keys held by its creators or users. Contract accounts are controlled by codes without the involvement of private keys (Fig.1). The reliance on private keys makes these two accounts act in different roles: EOA can prove the validity of a transaction and trigger the state transition in CAs but with limitations: • Expense: The functioning of the contract wallet necessitates initiation by an EOA, essentially entailing a contract invocation. Every transaction within this process incurs an extra 21,000 Gas cost, which includes charges for ECDSA signature verification, Nonce value verification, and ensuring adequate account balance. • Elevated barrier: EOAs must possess a substantial ether balance to cover Gas expenses (involving management of two separate accounts), or alternatively depend on a Relayer to manage Gas payments, potentially introducing centralization concerns. • Flunction: In addition to the fee in ether (ETH), users are consequently required to hold ether, which exposes them to the potential volatility of its price. • User perception: From a user’s perspective, grasping the nuances of gas price, gas limit, and transaction congestion is far from straightforward. The effort to integrate two distinct types of accounts while preserving their core functionalities has been a longstanding subject of deliberation within Ethereum communities. Two primary technical pathways have come to the forefront. • EOA delegates control to smart contracts, in which the contract logic can inplement the core functionalities from EOA transactions such as gas payment (e.g., EIP[2] -3074). • EOA accounts are designed to be armed with several key functionalities from smart contracts (EIP-4337). The concept of account abstraction (AA), indexed by EIP4337 [3], aligns with the second approach, aiming to bestow EOA with the programmable functionality akin to CAs. The incorporation of EIP-4337 into the present roadmap [4] signifies Ethereum’s definitive stance in these dual directions. By adopting AA updates, Ethereum sidesteps the potential hurdle of transitioning existing users. This is attributed to its implementation on the application layers rather than the consensus layer, which inherently offers robust backward compatibility capabilities. Ethereum transactions are required to emanate from EOAs, which are typically accessed through various wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, and Rainbow. The account abstraction approach ensures the retention of current users while empowering them with an effortless means of engaging with smart contracts. Beyond that, the functionalities elucidated in EIP-4337 can be further applied across Ethereum-compatible blockchains, including platforms such as BNB Chain (formerly BSC), Polygon, Avalanche, Optimism, Arbitrum, and Base (also refer to Sec.III-D). As of August 2023, a sequence of indicators[3] highlights the escalating attention garnered by this impactful concept. The cumulative count of active accounts has reached 739,295, and the aggregate count of successfully executed UserOperations (detailed explanations refer to Sec.III) has reached 1,307,197. In addition, the total number of bundled transactions has amounted to 1,197,871. Besides, in August, a remarkable upswing is observed across various market indicators compared to previous months (starting from March 2023, which marks the launch of EIP-4337): The count of monthly active EIP4337 smart accounts has surged to an impressive 420k (inclusive of all platforms). The earnings from monthly revenues and UserOperation fees have surpassed 24k and 220k respectively. Notably, the monthly tally of successfully executed UserOperations stands at 710k, while the gas expenses covered by paymasters have exceeded $360k USD Given its nascent stage, only a limited number of studies have delved into this emerging concept. We are aligned with the growing momentum surrounding account abstraction and further expand the boundaries of its research landscape. In particular, Our attempts. (Sec.II&III). We conduct a thorough exploration of diverse resources, including academic literature, blogs, forum discussions, and Git repositories. Drawing from such analyses, we offer a coherent and succinct elucidation of the fundamental concepts and operational mechanisms of account abstraction. • Concept refinement (Sec.IV). We further delve into the security risks that may exist in AA. Delving into historical contract and account-related vulnerabilities, we construct a framework (Tab.III) to engage in a proper discussion about the security implications of this account paradigm. • Security framework (Sec.V). Additionally, we provide more discussion about the principle of account abstraction designs and potential opportunities inspired. • Further discussion Our security discussion (majorly Sec.IV) led to the following insights. It is evident that integrating AA into current account systems can alleviate a multitude of vulnerabilities in both contract usage and block creation domains. However, AA’s effectiveness remains limited when addressing intrinsic aspects of solidity language and design intricacies, such as structural elements, configuration constraints, and verification mechanisms. Upon further analysis, we have identified that AA’s strength in fortifying security arises from its decoupling of key account abstraction components. By reallocating functions previously encompassed within accounts, AA can protect against numerous vulnerabilities in Ethereum’s application layer: critical functions like gas payment mechanisms are seamlessly transferred to the paymaster, avoiding vulnerabilities related to gas fees; the intricate process of transaction packaging now benefits from the management of bundler; and complex trading and swapping operations, previously reliant on CEX or DEX, are elegantly executed within the same transaction. The decoupling process has reduced the threat that was heavily dependent on contract functions. thereby increasing the overall security quotient. Security results. [6], an initial exploration into the Ethereum account abstraction is provided, outlining its distinctive features and functional methodologies. Jeremy Kohler Riverfront Times After the 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the months of protests that followed, the city of St. Louis was forced to reckon with its Black residents’ longstanding distrust of its police and courts. Kim Gardner emerged as a voice for change. A lifelong resident of St. Louis, she had diverse professional experiences, having worked as a funeral director, a nurse, a lawyer and a state legislator. When campaigning for circuit attorney, the city’s top prosecutor, she focused on the disproportionate frequency of arrests and police officers using force against St. Louis’ Black community. “We need to change decades of old practices that left many in our community distrustful of the criminal justice system as a whole,” , the city’s Black newspaper, just days before her decisive primary victory in August 2016 that all but sealed her general election win. she told The St. Louis American In the last decade, prosecutors in other major American cities also campaigned on promises of systemic reform: Kim Foxx in Chicago, Larry Krasner in Philadelphia, Chesa Boudin in San Francisco. Yet, much like Gardner, these prosecutors have faced resistance from the police and the unions that represent rank-and-file officers. They’ve been accused of being soft on crime and have even been met with political maneuvers aimed at derailing their initiatives. Several have been targeted by efforts to remove them from office or pare away their powers. Boudin lost a recall vote and was removed in June 2022. And Krasner, criticized for his reduced emphasis on prosecuting minor crimes, was impeached by the state legislature in November, although a state court threw out the result. In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has removed elected prosecutors in Tampa and Orlando. He suspended Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren over Warren’s refusal to prosecute offenses related to abortion and gender-related health care. He suspended the state attorney for Orange and Osceola counties, Monique Worrell, because he said she wasn’t tough enough on some serious offenses. Georgia recently became the first state to establish a commission with the authority to discipline and even remove local elected prosecutors. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp framed the law as a way to check “far-left prosecutors.” Gardner, who was reelected in 2020, stepped down in May of 2023 while facing both a lawsuit from the state attorney general that sought her removal and a separate attempt by the Republican-led legislature to curtail her authority. Gardner’s mismanagement of her office played a significant role in her downfall. Reform-minded lawyers who she personally hired had departed. And while judges fumed about prosecutors failing to show up for court, Gardner was moonlighting as a nursing student. Though other prosecutors faced various challenges, there are no widely known instances like that of retired detective Roger Murphey in St. Louis, and hasn’t received any departmental discipline. who has refused to testify in at least nine murder cases “For every progressive prosecutor who’s managed to stick it out, there’s one who’s either been recalled or driven out,” said Lara Bazelon, a University of San Francisco law school professor who volunteered on Boudin’s campaign and serves as chair of the commission he created to review inmates’ claims of innocence. “So it’s a real mix of success and cautionary tales.” She added: “If the police are against you, or literally out to get you, you’re probably not going to be able to last in that job.” Foxx, elected in 2016 and reelected in 2020, announced in April that she will not seek a third term next year, though she said it was not because of resistance from the police. In an interview, Foxx said that even before she took office, the Chicago police union felt threatened by her assertion that Black lives matter and that the criminal justice system could be more fair, particularly to communities of color. It was a signal, she said, “that I was not one of them.” “The reality is we were offering something very different to what was traditionally viewed as the law-and-order approach to prosecution,” Foxx said. “I think it was surprising to folks that prosecutors could be elected addressing these issues.” R. Michael Cassidy, a law professor at Boston College and an expert in prosecutorial ethics, said the Ferguson unrest emphasized the need for change in how police and prosecutors work. He said some prosecutors have failed to manage their relationships with police; prosecutors depend on the officers to bring them cases and to testify in court, but they must conduct oversight of the police as well. Foxx pushed back against any assertion that she didn’t manage her relationship with police. She pointed to a popular Chicago police blog that often refers to her as “Crimesha” — “a play on the word ‘crime’ and what I believe to be a racist insinuation about me being Black with the name ‘-esha.’” The blog has also sexualized her last name by adding a third X and has insinuated that members of her family are connected to gangs. “From the moment we came into office, we reached out to our partners in law enforcement, and what we saw was there was a segment of them who were never going to be satisfied with me in this role because I said ‘Black lives matter,’ because I said ‘We need police accountability,’ because I said that we had a criminal justice system that overly relied on incarceration that targeted Black and brown communities,” she said. She said that she, Gardner and other prosecutors “have been faced with an unprecedented level of hate and vitriol” from the police. “That,” she said, “is the story.” Chicago Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara and other union officials did not respond to requests for comment. Boudin said he and other local prosecutors have found “there is absolutely zero accountability for these officers who engage in explicitly political acts of sabotage or dereliction of duty.” A spokesperson for the San Francisco police union declined to comment. In essence, proxies and VPNs play indispensable roles in online privacy, anonymity, and security. By understanding their mechanisms and applications, users can navigate the web with confidence, knowing they have tools at their disposal to protect their online presence. Exploring Proxies and VPNs in Detail Proxies: Varieties and Configurations Residential vs. Data Center Proxies Residential proxies emulate authentic residential IP addresses, imbuing them with high reliability and authenticity. They are particularly valuable for tasks that demand genuine residential presence, such as social media management. Data Center Proxies Data center proxies reside within data centers, offering fast connections and scalability. However, their centralized nature makes them susceptible to detection and blocking by certain websites and services. Indeed, there is almost no contribution made to OpenHarmony in the current MSE community. Therefore, as our initial attempt towards bringing OpenHarmony research to the Mobile Software Engineering (MSE) community, we summarize the current achievements of OpenHarmony to help readers better understand the state of the OpenHarmony ecosystem. Specifically, in this section, we first briefly introduce the OpenAtom OpenHarmony initiative and subsequently highlight the existing toolchains and datasets available in the community. After that, we go one step further to also summarize other existing resources that may not be directly related to OpenHarmony but could still be beneficial to grow the ecosystem of OpenHarmony. 3.1 The OpenAtom OpenHarmony Initiative Recall that OpenHarmony is now a fully open-sourced project, which is currently incubated by the OpenAtom Foundation. At the moment, the OpenHarmony project is run by an operating committee, and its technical part is mainly run by a Technical Steering Committee (TSC). To support the technical success of OpenHarmony, the TSC has further set up various domain-specific Technical Supporting Groups (TSG). At the moment, there are six TSGs and the number is growing. The current supporting groups cover the following six domains: (1) Program Language, (2) Crossplatform App Development Framework, (3) Security and Privacy Computing, (4) Web3 Standard, (5) Robot, and (6) Integrated Development Environment (IDE). These domain-specific TSGs are responsible for understanding the domain-related requirements, summarizing the technical map of the domain, and preparing the fundamental technicals for helping domain-specific technical-related decision-making and eventually supporting the overall success of OpenHarmony. 3.2 Existing Toolchains We then look at the existing toolchains offered by the official OpenHarmony framework to support app developments and these toolchains are considered important and essential. Indeed, these tools could provide fundamental capabilities to support the implementation of more advanced OpenHarmony-specific toolchains. Ideally, these toolchains should cover the full lifecycle of app development, including development, build, testing, debugging, code review, and publishing. Table 1 summarizes some of the tools provided by OpenHarmony. The second column demonstrates the software engineering phase that the tool intends to support. At the moment, these toolchains have covered almost all the aforementioned lifecycle phases, e.g., including app development-related ones (e.g., IDE, Emulator, Device Manager), app building tools (e.g., hvigor), app testing tools (e.g., jsunit, uitest), debugging tools (e.g., HiLog, profiler), code reviewing tools (e.g., Code Linter), command line tools (e.g., hdc), and package management tool (e.g., ohpm). The only exception is the phase of publishing. At the moment, there is no such tool offered for OpenHarmony. It is nonetheless understandable as there is no app market available for hosting OpenHarmony apps yet. We believe such a tool will be provided once a dedicated app market is offered. It is worth noting that, at the moment, we only conducted a high-level overview and did not check in detail to what extent are the required functions in each phase covered by these tools. For example, there is a tool called Monkey in Android that supports random exploration of Android apps, it is not clear to us if the existing toolchains of OpenHarmony provide equivalent functions. As for our future work, we plan to have a more detailed look at these tools and provide to the community a clearer overview of these toolchains. 3.3 Existing Datasets As shown in Section 4, the datasets targeted by our MSE community can be mainly divided into four types: (1) Mobile apps (including both open-sourced and closed-sourced apps), (2) Mobile App Development Framework, (3) Third-party Libraries, (4) App Store Info (including app reviews). We now respectively summarize the current situation of these types of datasets in OpenHarmony, respectively. We further go one step deeper to harvest the relevant datasets, if possible, and make them publicly available for supporting our fellow researchers to conduct OpenHarmony-related software engineering research. Recall that OpenHarmony is a fully open-sourced system, its app development framework is open-sourced. The framework is the first gate that OpenHarmony apps need to interact with before running into the system. The interaction is mainly through OpenHarmony Framework. APIs provided by the app development SDK, as part of the OpenHarmony framework. Some of the meta-data of the OpenHarmony framework are shown in Table 2. The current framework is open-sourced at the interface_sdk-js repository[4] on Gitee and it currently has 105 branches, 30 tags, 1,400 forks, 57 stars, 7,833 commits, and 627 contributors. As a comparison, the last column of Table 2 shows the meta-data of the Android framework repository, respectively. It is obvious that OpenHarmony has a big step to go in order to catch up with Android, which poses lots of opportunities for our MSE community to mitigate the gap between the OpenHarmony framework and the Android framework We further look into the number of APIs offered by the OpenHarmony framework. Since there is no such information directly provided on the web, we decide to write a parser to directly harvest that from the open-source repository. We select the latest version (i.e., OpenHarmony 4.0) and only count the number of functions (including static and non-static functions). In the latest version, there are 10,435 APIs. This number is also significantly smaller than that of the Android framework, which already has over 30,000 APIs in 2018 (i.e., API version 28 [66]). Nonetheless, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the number of APIs (again, any functions are considered) is continuously increasing, showing that the capabilities of OpenHarmony are keeping maturing. We believe as time goes by, such a difference between the APIs of Android and OpenHarmony will be much smaller. One of the most important reasons that make mobile software engineering (especially for the Android community) a longstanding hot topic is due to the existence of a large number of mobile apps [35, 49]. Indeed, there are over 2 million Android apps (there is a similar number for the iOS community) available on the official Google Play store. In the famous AndroZoo dataset [67], there are over 23 million Android apps collected from various sources (e.g., the official Google Play store and over 10 third-party markets such as PlayDrone, AppChina, etc.) spanning various years. Liu et al. have subsequently harvested the open-sourced Android apps and formed them as a dataset called AndroZooOpen [72]. This dataset is also made publicly available to the software engineering community and has been demonstrated to be useful in supporting Android research tasks. Inspired by this, we hypothesize that OpenHarmony apps will be one of the most important resources for supporting OpenHarmony research. We, therefore, take our initial attempt to harvest existing OpenHarmony apps. Since there is no app market available for OpenHarmony yet, we solely focus on open-sourced OpenHarmony apps. Specifically, we take OpenHarmony as well as HarmonyOS as the search keyword and apply it to two famous cloud-based software version control websites, namely GitHub and Gitee, which are the most famous sites of such in the world and in China, respectively. OpenHarmony Apps. Our initial search results in 3,804 repositories[5] , for which 910 of them are from GitHub while the remaining 2,894 from Gitee. We remind the readers that these identified repositories may not always be OpenHarmony apps. Therefore, we resort to a Shell script (with manually identified features of OpenHarmony apps considered) to select such repositories that indeed contain OpenHarmony apps. Our experiment has eventually discovered 174 such repositories, with 147 and 27 from Gitee and Github, respectively. To facilitate further research, we have also made this list publicly available on the same site.[6] Libraries We remind the readers that OpenHarmony takes a newly introduced language called ArkTS to support app implementations. In this work, we also look at the existing third-party libraries that are available for supporting the development of OpenHarmony apps. Specifically, we would like to understand to what extent are ArkTS-based libraries available in our community and what are they designed for. In OpenHarmony, the official team has introduced a tool called ohpm (as also shown in Table 1) for managing all the third-party libraries designed for developing OpenHarmony apps. In the current central registry[7] , there are already 96 libraries and the number is growing. The functions of these libraries can be divided into 10 categories. Table 3 enumerates some of the representative ones for each category. Generally, we show one or two libraries for each category. The two are randomly chosen if there are more libraries available for the given category. Third-party Furthermore, as mentioned previously, ArkTS is not entirely new. It actually extends Typescript, which has been a popular programming language for more than 10 years. Typescript is Javascript with syntax for types, i.e., adding static typing with optional type annotations to Javascript. Theoretically, existing Typescript code (as well as Javascript code) can be directly reused for developing OpenHarmony apps. Those Typescript/Javascript implementations could be regarded as third-party libraries as well. By taking Typescript and Javascript as the search keyword, Github returns 513,000 and 1.7 million repositories for Typescript and Javascript, respectively. Such a large number of repositories (despite not all of them being code-related repositories) indicates that there are already a lot of potential third-party libraries available for OpenHarmony.[8] Those libraries could be leveraged (either directly or with additional efforts contributed by our fellow researchers) to facilitate the development of OpenHarmony apps and its broad ecosystem. . Our software engineering researchers have leveraged app store info (such as the app’s author information, description, user rating, user reviews, etc.) to support various studies. For example, Gorla et al. [43] have leveraged the app’s description to check against the app’s behavior. Obie et al. [83] have leveraged the app’s review data to investigate the violation of honesty in mobile apps. To the best of our knowledge, there is barely any app store hosting OpenHarmony apps at the moment. Therefore, there is no such dataset that can be collected so far. Nonetheless, the OpenHarmony version of a given app will also share much of such information as that available in Android or iOS. This information could also be helpful when mining OpenHarmony-specific app store information. App Store Info 3.4 Existing OpenHarmony Research As our initial attempt towards building the research roadmap for guiding our software engineering researchers to contribute to OpenHarmony, we start by conducting a lightweight literature review about OpenHarmony. Our method is straightforward. We use OpenHarmony and HarmonyOS as the search keywords and we apply them separately to search for relevant publications on both Google Scholar and DBLP, respectively. At this step, when applied to Google Scholar, we will only consider the top 100 results. Table 4 enumerates the list of OpenHarmony-related publications. In total, we only found 8 papers and among which only one (i.e., the one published at the APWeb conference) can be found on DBLP, while all of them can be found on Google Scholar. At this step, we only consider a paper relevant if and only if it directly contributes to the OpenHarmony project or if it takes OpenHarmony as its dataset to evaluate their approaches. There are several other papers that are not included in this review although they do involve OpenHarmony/HarmonyOS systems. They are excluded because they do not contribute anything to OpenHarmony as they only involve running their approaches on OpenHarmony/HarmonyOS systems. For example, the work proposed by Qiu et al. [87] is not included in this paper because it only leverages HarmonyOS to support their model implementation about supporting distributed user interfaces to be dynamically configured on multiple IoT devices based on user preferences. As shown in Table 4, there are only eight OpenHarmony-related papers published in the community. The efforts could be neglected if compared to those for Android, where there are over 7,000 papers published as recorded in DBLP (searching by taking Android as the keyword). This evidence confirms our previous argument that there is still a huge gap between OpenHarmony and Android. This, however, also demonstrates that there are huge opportunities open for our community. Ideally, the research methods applied to Android or iOS could also be applied to OpenHarmony. Despite there being only eight papers published, it is motivating to find that the number of relevant papers keeps growing. The venues where the current papers are published are generally not in reputed journals or conferences. Indeed, among the eight papers, only four of them are published at venues recorded by CORE and only three of them are ranked. We would hope that our community could spend more effort in developing software engineering approaches for OpenHarmony and publish more papers at mainstream venues. [4] We remind the readers that the framework and the SDK are not exactly the same as the framework may contain more capabilities that are reserved for system apps while SDK is only supposed to be used by third-party apps. For simplicity, in this work, we will not differentiate this as there is no direct repository provided for hosting the framework code of OpenHarmony. The State of OpenHarmony Ecosystem: Initiatives, Toolchains, and Datasets

For years, mobile phones have kept us connected on the go—whether it's shooting off work emails mid-flight, sharing moments on social media during dinner, or exchanging funny memes with friends from anywhere on the planet. Our phones have become more than just personal gadgets; they now link to our banks and investment accounts, allowing us to authenticate and manage online access with ease. While smart locks turning phones into house keys may not be a reality yet, the prospect of keys, watches, and wallets becoming obsolete looms. The comfort of two-factor authentication and verification tricks us into feeling secure, thinking that our online bank accounts are safeguarded because only we control our phones. We unlock them with passcodes, our thumbs, or our faces. However, cybercriminals can sidestep these security measures by simply swapping out the SIM card. The subscriber identity module (SIM card) is a small chip-containing card inserted into phones for calls and texts. Without it, a phone can only function on Wi-Fi for internet access or photo-taking. How does a SIM Swap work? A SIM card swap occurs when scammers gain control of your phone by contacting your phone service provider and deceiving them into linking your phone number to a new SIM card in their possession. They begin by collecting substantial personal information about you, then proceed to impersonate you when contacting your phone provider. Typically, they claim to have lost or damaged their (your) SIM card, insisting on activating a new one. Once your phone service provider complies and activates the new SIM card, all calls and text messages redirect to the scammer's phone. Meanwhile, your cell phone is left with a non-functional SIM card, and you may not realize the loss of control over your phone's information until you attempt to use it. As mentioned earlier, scammers need a significant amount of personal information to execute this scheme, and this information is often obtained through phishing attacks, malware, or social media research. Phishing attacks involve scammers sending emails or text messages, posing as trustworthy sources, to trick you into divulging sensitive information. For instance, a scammer might impersonate your bank, claiming your account will be frozen unless you verify personal details. These attacks can be challenging to detect because the perpetrators seem trustworthy, and the communication appears authentic. Everyone is susceptible to phishing attempts. As I write this article, I received a text message from an unknown number, supposedly from USPS, warning me of an undelivered package and prompting me to update my address through a suspicious link. Since I wasn't expecting a package, I grew suspicious, especially after examining the sender's domain name, which didn't resemble a USPS domain. Imagine if someone eagerly awaiting an important delivery receives such a message; it emphasizes that anyone can fall victim to a phishing attack. Equally perilous are emails that entice you to click on links, introducing malware to your computer, recording and transmitting your keystrokes, including passwords and security answers. Scammers also exploit your social media profiles to gather information, such as your mother's maiden name, high school attended, or pet's name—data often shared on social media and commonly used as security questions. Even with private account settings, data breaches can occur, as seen when . former Meta employees accessed user accounts for bribes Once scammers access your personal details, they can convincingly communicate with your phone service providers, asserting they are you and authorizing the activation of a new SIM card. In most cases, you remain unaware until money is missing from your accounts or you can no longer access them due to scammers resetting passwords. But how do these scammers transfer money without detection? With the gathered information, they may set up a second bank account in your name at your bank, where security checks may be less stringent since you are an existing customer. SIM Swap Attacks on the rise. In the fight against SIM swapping attacks, phone service providers have collaborated closely with law enforcement, introducing new policies and enhancing employee training to better identify impersonation attempts. Despite these measures, SIM swap scams are on the rise. In September 2021, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) revealed its intention to develop rules addressing , and particularly SIM swapping following numerous consumer complaints about significant distress, inconvenience, and financial harm caused by such incidents. In a February 2022 , the FBI highlighted a surge in SIM swapping scams, reporting 1,611 incidents in 2021 alone, resulting in losses exceeding $68 million. Notably, a criminal group comprising ten individuals aged 18-26 was apprehended across multiple European countries. They unlawfully accessed the phones of well-known figures, including social media influencers, sports stars, musicians, and their families in the United States, stealing over $100 million. This organized criminal network, linked to the Italian mafia, employed computer experts for cyber fraud, recruiters for money muling, and money laundering experts, including those well-versed in cryptocurrencies. cybercrimes in the U.S. public service announcement In another case, Nicholas Truglia, a 25-year-old crypto scammer, received an 18-month prison sentence for his role in a scheme that involved hacking a blockchain consultant's phone through SIM swapping, resulting in the theft of $22 million in cryptocurrency. Truglia, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit , agreed to pay over $20 million in restitution. Notably, the victim, Michael Terpin, took swift action by hiring an attorney to identify the perpetrators, leading to the exposure of a 15-year-old alleged leader, Ellis Pinsky, who surrendered cash, cryptocurrency, and a valuable watch to Terpin. Terpin successfully sued Truglia, winning a judgment of over $75 million, one of the largest in the cryptocurrency space at that time. Terpin also filed a lawsuit against his phone provider AT&T, accusing them of failing to protect his personal information. wire fraud Despite consistent efforts by U.S. and European governments to combat SIM swap attacks, recent cases indicate that scammers persist in targeting victims. A current SIM card-swapping campaign conducted by a Chinese threat actor known as "Scattered Spider" serves as the latest example. According to cybersecurity technology company CrowdStrike, "Scattered Spider" has launched a financially motivated and highly persistent intrusion campaign, targeting telecommunications and business process outsourcing companies.
