The impact of artificial intelligence within warehouses will act as a crystal ball for AI, robotics in other industries Most robots used in factories today are powerful but blind. They are programmed to do specific tasks repeatedly with high precision and speed, but until now have not been able to adapt to changes in the environment or handling variables. Robot arms often lack the ability to grasp an object if it is moved a few inches, not to mention picking or sorting millions of different products in a warehouse. As a result system integrators design shaker tables, feeders, conveyor belts, etc., so robots can be offered the same parts in the right orientation. Larger industrial robots need cages so they don’t accidentally hurt nearby people. Unlike human hands, which can perform tens of thousands of different tasks, robot arms can only be programmed for single tasks, and they need the proper end effectors. Additionally, most robots cannot sense, unless you equip them with force or vision sensors. They don’t know if tasks are performed properly, because they cannot see or feel. Traditional computer vision requires pre-registration of all objects, i.e. scanning and building computer-aided design (CAD) models for all items beforehand with expensive 3D cameras. The process is time-consuming and inflexible. Even if there was a box with exactly the same shape, but a different size, a robot couldn’t automatically recognize the differences and figure out how to grasp the new item. In addition, translucent packaging, reflective surfaces, and deformable objects (such as food and clothing) make robotic vision an even more difficult problem to solve. The additional non-robot hardware and integration end up costing four times more than a robot arm, which costs anywhere between $10,000 up to $100,000. Adding intelligence to robots To solve these issues, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is unleashing the full potential of robotics, giving them the ability to recognize and react to their surroundings and handle product variations. It is currently suited for: Deep Reinforcement Learning · Simple or simulated tasks · Fault-tolerant tasks · Just enough variation to make explicit modeling difficult · Easy-to-define goals (reward functions) · Semi-structured environments Warehouse as a testing ground for AI Automation in warehouses is widely considered the “low-hanging fruit” for these technologies because tasks tend to be similar across warehouses, and the environment is more structured. For example, order picking represents more than 40% of operational costs across most warehouses. While tasks are repetitive, they involve some variation with products and packaging design, making it impossible to hard-program robots in advance. Furthermore, labor costs account for up to 70% of a warehouse’s total budget. Pressured by e-commerce companies such as Amazon, retailers are looking to automation to address labor shortages and reduce costs. Customer demand, price competition, and fast delivery requirements are driving a strong business case for warehouses to be the first adopter of AI-enabled robots. Chart: Why do we see AI-enabled robots in the warehouse first? Most tasks in a warehouse are fault tolerant, unlike tasks on a production floor or in the automotive industry. If a robot accidentally drops an object in a warehouse, it can try again as long as it achieves the required speed and success rates without damaging the goods. DRL is particularly suited for fault-tolerant simple tasks — actions a human can perform within a few seconds — with enough variation in semi-structured environments. As technology improves in environments like warehouses, it can then be applied in other industries, such as manufacturing, where tasks are more complicated and more uncertainties exist. Thus, an automated warehouse acts as an incubator, predicting a knowledge spill-over to many other market segments. Piece-picking is the holy grail Warehouse automation has been around for decades, in the form of automated storage, retrieval systems, and mobile robots like those from Kiva (now Amazon Robotics), that move items around. But most of the pick-and-pack operations within a warehouse are still performed by humans, with labor costs accounting for 50 to 70% of the overall warehouse budget. Worker shortages have driven up salaries by a rate of 6 to 8% every year, while robot costs have fallen considerably since the 1990s. Piece-picking has long been the holy grail of robotics. Year after year, incumbents such as Amazon and KUKA host robotics challenges for startups and academic teams to create machines that can identify, pick up and stow goods. The emergence of deep learning allows robots to recognize, pick, and place hundreds or up to thousands of items. But the technology is not yet perfect. It’s still challenging for a machine to recognize tens of millions of objects, and manipulate deformable objects or items with transparent packages. However, our interviews with Locus Robotics and Osaro indicate that many industry experts expect the technology will mature. In addition, we will have a robot vision camera that can recognize almost everything in a warehouse within five years. If that happens, it will affect not just warehouses, but retail, delivery, and many other applications that we haven’t yet imagined. Pushing towards standard models Technology improvements in warehouse automation and beyond will also push the mature, but fragmented, robotics industry to become more standardized and modular. Given the nature of narrow AI, most Silicon Valley startups in the AI-enabled robotics industry choose to focus on specific vertical applications and collect proprietary data as a defensive advantage. Piece-picking by robots is the best example. As the technology improves, we will see warehouse piece-picking startups enter manufacturing, food, and agriculture markets. Moving away from manually programming a robot and having it learn and act autonomously on specific simple tasks — and sharing the learning — will become more important in the future. However, it’s not easy to find scalable and technically feasible business cases like piece picking that customers are willing to pay for. For example, assembly tasks vary from factory to factory, making it difficult to get sufficient training data or scale a solution across different customers. Given current technology constraints, there’s still a trade-off between precision and flexibility. Deep learning allows robots to handle variation, but these AI-enabled robots still cannot achieve the same precision and accuracy as traditional robots, at least not today. Some startups are providing modules or technology stacks for other players in the ecosystem to mitigate the complexity and scalability issues mentioned above. New areas where startups are likely to enter and disrupt include teleoperation modules, controllers that allow for safer human-robot collaboration, human-centered AI protocols, and sensors that can quantify human behavior. Eventually, we may see unified operating systems for AI-enabled robots similar to Windows or Android in the consumer electronics space, or standard user interfaces that will fundamentally transform the fragmented robotics industry and further accelerate its disruption. Standard modules and interfaces will bring down the cost to enter the market and shorten the time to market. As DRL and robotics technology improves, we will see a boom across industries including agriculture, food processing, home, and even surgical robotics. How technology will transform the industry landscape Led by industry leaders like Amazon and Ocado, a British online grocery store, retailers see efficient and cost-effective supply chains as a key to success and are incentivized to automate their warehouses for lower cost, lower management complexity, and higher scalability. While Amazon keeps its Kiva mobile robots and automated warehouse solutions for in-house use only, Ocado launched its fulfillment platform to help other companies store, pick, and transport groceries. But most retailers still rely on material-handling companies and system integrators to build and maintain an automated warehouse. Incumbent material-handling companies tend to exploit the current technology, focusing on high-revenue-potential retrofit projects. This gives startups an opportunity to enter from the lower-end markets, where incumbents are less interested, and thus would not respond immediately. Dozens of startups offer scalable and affordable solutions that address customer needs for robots that can handle high-variability, low-precision tasks, such as piece picking in the warehouses. On the other hand, large robotics companies have long focused on developing high-speed and more-precise solutions to serve their main customers in the automotive and manufacturing industries. The pursuit of absolute precision is contrary to the process of deep learning, where results improve over time through trial and error. Some robotics companies saw an opportunity to enter new segments that require robots to handle high-variability, but lower-precision tasks, and began to build in-house AI teams and explore partnerships with startups developing deep neural network solutions for robots. There are currently more than 20 warehouse piece-picking robot startups worldwide, including Osaro and Righthand Robotics. Most of these startups (between seed round and Series C funding) are working on pilot projects with incumbent material-handling, retail, and robotics companies. Software and services will also capture more values, while premiums in hardware will decrease. With this power shift, as well as potential mergers and acquisitions, the landscape will change significantly over the next few years. The future of AI-enabled robotics Thoughts vary on the effect that AI and DRL will have on the robotics industry. One scenario is the robotics industry will consolidate because of the AI network effect, which says results improve as the amount of training data they’re given increases. This idea is that whoever owns the most proprietary data will win the competition. However, new researches in the areas of Transfer Learning, Meta Learning, and Zero-Shot Learning make it possible to learn from fewer and fewer examples, generalizing learning results across different fields. This is a near-future story of unforeseen heroes emerging and rapidly evolving to reverse our loss of autonomy As 2024 came to an end, it became more obvious to even most mainstreamers that corporate control of governments was accelerating in its inexorable march toward absolute centralized dominion, feeding deadlier "bullets" into the guns of increasingly tyrannical CorpGovs. Nefarious, shifty-eyed psychopaths in cold, dark rooms constantly brainstormed new false flag crises. Their purpose was to keep populations afraid and under control, undermining personal autonomy through fear. Some newer ideas for future psyops included alien invasion and cyberattacks. For decades, CorpGovs had been actively working through media, both subtly and not, to soften and prepare humans for these and other potential future crises. Meanwhile, CorpGovs continued the tried and true approach. At the behest of weapons manufacturers and others who profit from large-scale strife, never-ending war continued to soak up money, attention, and lives. This also served to reinforce the "us vs them" mentality some had gotten so skilled at manipulating. More division and collectivism. What team are you part of? Not enough strife? Throw in some race-baiting and gender discord! At the bidding of power-hungry elites, Malthusians, and Big Pharma, deadlier viruses continued to be created, enhanced, and spread. Some associates of those same virus creators rapidly produced remedies that often caused more harm than the initial viruses. Yay for shiny new maladies like turbo cancer! A never-ending source of business and control over our bodies. Big tech, social media, and entertainment media, not to be outdone, continued their war for control of human culture. The "messages" were many, including "do not think for yourself," "CorpGov knows best," "your doctor knows best," "you will own nothing and like it," "fear other humans," "others are responsible for your feelings," and "pineapple is not okay on pizza." Like frogs in slowly boiling water, most doubted the harm in these messages, but over time, they contributed to feelings of helplessness, malaise, envy, and bad taste in pizza. Digital privacy continued to suffer as CorpGovs created and embraced deeper levels of AI use for snooping, scanning, analyzing, and manipulating human behaviors, further centralizing power and reducing individual autonomy. While CorpGovs did what CorpGovs do, AI developers, large and small, continued to create, experiment with, and use an increasing number and diversity of AI models. One limitation of this was that if their sample set of data did not include outliers, they could not "imagine" those outliers existing. This touches on the bigger issue; they had no abductive reasoning. This is when we piece together a constantly changing picture of the world. Some call abduction "inference to the best explanation." In 2026, an unknown entity made a breakthrough in how to "grow" AIs that used abductive reasoning to evolve their ability to understand the world around them. Most hailed this new development as the birth of AGI. AGI Meanwhile, CorpGovs finally forced Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) on the world, while setting a 5-year limit on continued use of cash and any "unapproved" currencies like crypto in general and specifically. These CBDCs became affectionately known as CorpGovCoins. They became the new "shit coins" in the view of Decentralists. As mentioned, on the CorpGov chopping block list was bitcoin. Fortunately, during this time, smart and curious humans had not been sitting on their hands. Researchers with planet-sized brains, white lab coats, and state-of-the-art AI tools were hard at work developing advanced quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms and supporting hardware. With AI doing an increasing amount of analysis, virtual experimentation, debugging, and eventually production, a new form of "Quantum Ledger" (QL) was invented and quickly rolled out. QLs provided instantaneous, untraceable, and nearly free transactions. Qcoin was born, almost immediately replacing Bitcoin! Exponential Manufacturing is one of 3 industry-dedicated organized by SU designed to describe and spur innovations relevant to manufacturers. Unlike a traditional classroom, it is not led by professors or mad scientists (with some exceptions), but indeed executives and entrepreneurs who have already brought “exponential technologies” to market. One example is Local Motors Jay Rogers, who 3d prints crowdsourced car designs in new “micro-factories” and is preparing to use the same technology on Mars. Singularity University's Exponential Manufacturing Summit Summits For everyone I spoke to, the three days of the conference were extremely inspiring and motivating, but not without being overwhelming. Yes, hearing that your brain will be connected to the cloud in a couple of decades is unfathomable, but even the short-term is clouded in uncertainty. It became clear that every layer of the manufacturing value chain is at risk from technologies like additive manufacturing, (collaborative) robotics and predictive analytics, the required adjustments were described as unique for different businesses. Akin to the case method, famous with neighboring Harvard Business School, the complex task of incorporating innovation into business cannot be attributed to a set of decision points and is best told by example. Below, I've merely attempted to group these examples and identify 11 themes from the conference that should be at the top of any manufacturer's decision pipeline. . 1. The age of abundance , the co-founder of SU rolled on in a telepresence robot and described how (including ironically his own presence). He went on to summarize recent improvements in health care, energy and tool availability, the dematerialization of the supply chain and support networks for innovation. His message? We have enough resources today to take care of everyone. The challenge is how. What now? . 2. Exponentials in manufacturing , Executive Director of Worldwide Summits at SU, introduced us to the concept of exponentials, the technologies that are improving at an exponential rate. We learned how by 2030, the cost of a computer as powerful as the human mind will be $1,000 and by 2050 for the same price we will access the equivalent capacity of all human minds combined. We saw that 3D printing is reaching maturity along the hype curve, that reinforcement learning has enabled computers to beat humans in one of the most complex board games invented and how new biotechnologies can now be developed in a garage. We learned about how these advances follow a predictable exponential pattern that is difficult to comprehend to our “linear” brains. Therefore, . we are constantly underestimating the growth potential of technology going forward And if we do play the story forward, Amazon envisions printing products in a truck and delivering them by drone, robotic skins could be 3D printed, sustainable energy will become the cheapest source of energy and sequencing the human genome by 2018 will be possible at the cost of a pizza. He claims that any process evolving through trial-and-error evolves exponentially and technology is no exception. His comprehensive empirical analysis has validated exponential improvements in several diverse technologies: computing, DNA sequencing, communication, etc. In the conference, he singled out “brain extenders” like smartphones that expand our intelligence and how we will go on to connect the human neocortex to the cloud Any organization can incorporate exponential forecasting relevant to their business in their planning process. Think about the technologies making up your product or supply chain, forecast their evolution and track resulting disruptions to your market. . What now? Don't just rely on intuition to understand what's possible . 3. Changing roles of global manufacturers Deborah Wince-Smith, President & CEO of U.S. Council on Competitiveness gave the slide-free Washington perspective on global manufacturing. America is poised to reclaim the top-spot in manufacturing competitiveness from China by the end of the decade. China's labour costs have increased five-fold since 2005, and instead the “Mighty Five” (Malaysia, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam) could replace China as low-cost manufacturers. She also cited US regulatory and cultural advantages like entrepreneurial DNA, rule of Law and protection of IP. She did mention specific challenges: China's advances in all forms of supercomputing (including quantum and neuromorphic architectures), inefficiencies in health-care, housing and education, the risk-aversiveness of our current generation in light of financial difficulty and the mounting cyber-security threat. Boston plans to lead in friendly regulation by supporting initiatives like driverless car testing on real streets. We need to respect the changing roles of manufacturers in the world and how manufacturing remains a strategic playing field for governments. At least in America, the government wants to signal stability and a positive outlook for manufacturers while cities continue to support innovation. The hope is that companies respond by taking a longer-term perspective and taking greater risks. What now? . 4. The new makers More people than ever today can design and build physical things. Jay Rogers, CEO of Local Motors wowed the audience by introducing the concept of micro factories that support advanced small volume manufacturing. But the biggest eye-opener was how he crowd-sourced collaborative designs leading to everything from Letty's Rally Fighter in the latest Fast and Furious installation to a voice-controlled concept car for urban commuting (first ever to lack a seat for driving). In an industry where design matters, to make something different, you have to build differently. There is every reason to be optimistic about the supply of industrial design talent, but manufacturers have to make the most of that talent. . What now? Tools for rapid prototyping, experimentation and co-creation are there to stay ahead of customer expectations . 5. First self-disruptors Successful innovation engines fueled by partnerships are spreading beyond software companies. , Head of Narrative and Partnerships at Lowe's Innovation Labs, talked about how Lowe's focus on customer behavior has helped them bring new innovations to their business. Amanda Denton Manna They created an AR application that helped customers understand the size & fit of potential products from their homes, a visual positioning service, an assistant robot, Lowe's Holoroom for VR experiments and even an Iron Man-style exosuit to support lifting of heavy objects. There is more, Karen Kerr, Sr. Managing Director of GE Ventures, talked about how GE uses their venture portfolio to rapidly test and implement innovations in their own plants, creating immediate synergies and eyeing companies for future acquisition. The truth about data Howard Heppelmann, Divisional Vice President and General Manager from PTC, started the section off with three big use cases for data-driven decision making: Predictive Maintenance, Predictive Quality and Predictive Performance. Jane Zavalishina, CEO of Yandex Data Factory added a few: reducing material needs, optimising production routes and measuring the unmeasurable, but immediately cautioned against visualizing the factory of the future. The hope is that automation does not mean replacement of human labor, but instead indicates potential for deeper human and computer collaboration. Karen Leavitt, CMO at Locus Robotics, explained how warehouse robots actually reduce significant physical strain on workers by helping to transform goods and are a while away from being fully autonomous. Collaboration will change even for knowledge workers. Steve Shepley, a Principal at Deloitte, described two ways they will be affected: process automation (automating repetitive, manual, structured and logical tasks) and cognitive automation (automating repetitive, manual, situational & decision-oriented tasks). While the consensus seems to be that automation will not necessarily have a net positive impact on jobs directly, it is possible that unless we fill the mounting skill gap, this will result in significant job losses. It is the role of the employer to develop new skills in employees to ensure they are fit for jobs of the future. What now? . 9. Skunkworks is the only way When it comes to actually transforming the organization, it seems like politics is the core question to tackle. John Hagel, Co-Chairman for Deloitte's Centre for the Edge talked about how in his experience, change agents often run into the “anti-bodies” of the organization, which can prevent whole-company transformations. He said the best way to solve that is taking experiments in isolation (“at the edge”) and winning through growth, not alignment. If you are in a very conservative company without deep top-down support or foresight let your ideas grow into results before going head-to-head with the rest of the organization. What now? The risk of being irresponsible Corporate Social Responsibility is taken very seriously by some and seen as strategic in the long horizon. Trisa Tompson, Chief Responsibility Officer at Dell, talked about her inspiring journey from Law to corporate responsibility. She learned that 9 out of 10 consumers expect companies to do more than make profits and realized that mission at Dell. Now Dell has helped kickstart the ocean plastic value chain by using ocean plastic in manufacturing and its employees have contributed 5M hours of community service with 70% participation. Instead of just minimizing waste, . She warned that Corporate Social Responsibility is difficult, also requiring disruptive thinking, community collaboration, new partnerships and new business models; but early movement is equally crucial. What now? companies should focus on offsetting a negative impact with a 10x larger positive impact . 11. The bigger journey Rob Nail, CEO of SU took time to explain how this conference is part of bigger personal and company transformation to become an “exponential organization”. Transformation needs support and timing in addition to the right ideas. Start asking yourself “how do I stay on top of this?”, “what should I be reading?”, “who should I be working with?”. What now ? Imagine a robot that can see, hear, and smell 10,000 times better than humans and computers. One would think this is impossible, but it is, in fact, completely plausible. The human senses are limited and it is, for this reason, police and army personnel use trained sniffer dogs to detect drugs, bombs, and fugitives. The problem is that caring for and maintaining these animals is costly and time-consuming. Enter the combination of science, technology, and biology - or rather, synthetic biology. In a study published recently in the journal, , researchers have discovered a way to harness the capabilities of the locust, which has a highly-sensitive sense of sight, touch, and smell. Biosensor and Bioelectronics By using the antenna of a locust and keeping it “alive”, scientists were able to capture a large variety of smells detected and undetected by humans. Antennae from a desert locust were connected to an electronic system that, using machine learning, detects and measures odors with a level of sensitivity usually only found in animals and insects. According to , they then paired the robot with an algorithm that learned to characterize the smells by their signal output. an article in Engadget In this way, the team created a system that could reliably differentiate between eight “pure” odors, including geranium, lemon, and marzipan, and two mixtures of different smells. This phenomenal discovery could have far-reaching applications. Researchers say such robots could one day be used to detect drugs and explosives, and could theoretically replace canines in airport and police search operations. Obviously, this would be cheaper and more efficient. It can also be used to detect problems in the food industry such as freshness, mold, and various other bacteria. Ideally, it could also be used by doctors to detect various types of diseases and cancers not typically detected by other technologies. While the researcher claims the robot is a “scientific first,” this may be a stretch. Last June, researchers from Michigan State University published research detailing a system that used surgically-altered locusts to . detect cancer cells As far back as 2016, scientists also tried turning locusts . into bomb-sniffing cyborgs Clearly, researchers have been thinking about this technology and the need for it for a long time now. The concept is there but perhaps needs a few more years until technology is advanced enough to be able to put this terrific and exciting technology to use in the field. Regardless, once this technology is paired with AI, it can be used not only to detect issues but also to predict issues as well. This would be a game-changer and would accelerate the advancement of synthetic biology and its practical applications.
