initially started as a pet project for my coding sessions. It gradually turned into something that would be useful for other developers, too, so I made it public, and I still can't believe how far it has come! DevTunes FM I am so grateful to announce that we recently hit a major milestone of 700K+ listens. I want to thank you all for being so supportive, and this means the world to me! To celebrate this, I decided to write an article where I could take you behind the scenes and share some of the most valuable lessons I've learned. Clear vision is key When it comes to the vision, having a clear goal is essential. It's the foundation of your project, so the more concise it will be, the easier it will be to build upon. Before I started to build anything, I knew my focus would be on simplicity, usability, and the design of the app. I based all my further decisions on that. 2. Planning rewards itself As A. Lincoln once said, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe". The same could be applied to development. I spent quite a lot of time planning all the features. But it made the design and coding part way easier since I knew what functionality I was going for. 3. UI is thinking made visual Once you have planned everything, coming up with the UI is like displaying your thought logic so that users can interact with it. For example, I used Figma to create all of the UI components for the app. The UI is your presentation, so it should be easy to use and straightforward. 4. UX is all about the details The UX should not be underestimated since all the little things combined leave an impression on users and affect whether or not they will come back. I spent time improving UX, such as the loading screen, transitions between the background changes, implementing keyboard shortcuts, and more. 5. Passion projects boost motivation I am a strong believer that passion fuels success, therefore I feel that it is important to work on something that genuinely interests and attracts you. I've been listening to various genres of electronic subgenres for a couple of decades now, and it was a dream of mine to compile them all on this app. 6. Don't settle for less "Build it, and they will come" is a myth! Spread the word about your work wherever you can! Listen to your users and improve your project accordingly. I launched the project on Product Hunt, wrote about it on DEV, Hashnode, and Medium, and now I'm actively using Twitter and LinkedIn to announce updates. 7. Responsive design = priority With so many devices out there, your app should be adapted for various screen sizes. Use analytics like Umami to get to know your audience better. For example, I like to listen to DevTunes FM via the web version while I am coding, and I am also listening when I am running or biking via the mobile version. 8. Persistence pays off Keep learning new stuff, consume quality content, and work on new ideas. No problem is hard enough if you put enough thought into it. IN WHICH PASSEPARTOUT DOES NOT SUCCEED IN MAKING ANYBODY LISTEN TO REASON The train, on leaving Great Salt Lake at Ogden, passed northward for an hour as far as Weber River, having completed nearly nine hundred miles from San Francisco. From this point it took an easterly direction towards the jagged Wahsatch Mountains. It was in the section included between this range and the Rocky Mountains that the American engineers found the most formidable difficulties in laying the road, and that the government granted a subsidy of forty-eight thousand dollars per mile, instead of sixteen thousand allowed for the work done on the plains. But the engineers, instead of violating nature, avoided its difficulties by winding around, instead of penetrating the rocks. One tunnel only, fourteen thousand feet in length, was pierced in order to arrive at the great basin. The track up to this time had reached its highest elevation at the Great Salt Lake. From this point it described a long curve, descending towards Bitter Creek Valley, to rise again to the dividing ridge of the waters between the Atlantic and the Pacific. There were many creeks in this mountainous region, and it was necessary to cross Muddy Creek, Green Creek, and others, upon culverts. Passepartout grew more and more impatient as they went on, while Fix longed to get out of this difficult region, and was more anxious than Phileas Fogg himself to be beyond the danger of delays and accidents, and set foot on English soil. At ten o’clock at night the train stopped at Fort Bridger station, and twenty minutes later entered Wyoming Territory, following the valley of Bitter Creek throughout. The next day, 7th December, they stopped for a quarter of an hour at Green River station. Snow had fallen abundantly during the night, but, being mixed with rain, it had half melted, and did not interrupt their progress. It ought not to be a difficult task, since that gentleman was naturally sedentary and little curious. After going about two hundred miles, the travellers at last found themselves on one of those vast plains which extend to the Atlantic, and which nature has made so propitious for laying the iron road. On the declivity of the Atlantic basin the first streams, branches of the North Platte River, already appeared. The whole northern and eastern horizon was bounded by the immense semi-circular curtain which is formed by the southern portion of the Rocky Mountains, the highest being Laramie Peak. Between this and the railway extended vast plains, plentifully irrigated. On the right rose the lower spurs of the mountainous mass which extends southward to the sources of the Arkansas River, one of the great tributaries of the Missouri. At half-past twelve the travellers caught sight for an instant of Fort Halleck, which commands that section; and in a few more hours the Rocky Mountains were crossed. There was reason to hope, then, that no accident would mark the journey through this difficult country. The snow had ceased falling, and the air became crisp and cold. Large birds, frightened by the locomotive, rose and flew off in the distance. No wild beast appeared on the plain. It was a desert in its vast nakedness. After a comfortable breakfast, served in the car, Mr. Fogg and his partners had just resumed whist, when a violent whistling was heard, and the train stopped. Passepartout put his head out of the door, but saw nothing to cause the delay; no station was in view. Aouda and Fix feared that Mr. Fogg might take it into his head to get out; but that gentleman contented himself with saying to his servant, “See what is the matter.” Passepartout rushed out of the car. Thirty or forty passengers had already descended, amongst them Colonel Stamp Proctor. The train had stopped before a red signal which blocked the way. The engineer and conductor were talking excitedly with a signal-man, whom the station-master at Medicine Bow, the next stopping place, had sent on before. The passengers drew around and took part in the discussion, in which Colonel Proctor, with his insolent manner, was conspicuous. Passepartout, joining the group, heard the signal-man say, “No! you can’t pass. The bridge at Medicine Bow is shaky, and would not bear the weight of the train.” This was a suspension-bridge thrown over some rapids, about a mile from the place where they now were. According to the signal-man, it was in a ruinous condition, several of the iron wires being broken; and it was impossible to risk the passage. He did not in any way exaggerate the condition of the bridge. It may be taken for granted that, rash as the Americans usually are, when they are prudent there is good reason for it. Passepartout, not daring to apprise his master of what he heard, listened with set teeth, immovable as a statue. “Hum!” cried Colonel Proctor; “but we are not going to stay here, I imagine, and take root in the snow?” “Colonel,” replied the conductor, “we have telegraphed to Omaha for a train, but it is not likely that it will reach Medicine Bow in less than six hours.” “Six hours!” cried Passepartout. “Certainly,” returned the conductor, “besides, it will take us as long as that to reach Medicine Bow on foot.” “But it is only a mile from here,” said one of the passengers. “Yes, but it’s on the other side of the river.” “And can’t we cross that in a boat?” asked the colonel. “That’s impossible. The creek is swelled by the rains. It is a rapid, and we shall have to make a circuit of ten miles to the north to find a ford.” The colonel launched a volley of oaths, denouncing the railway company and the conductor; and Passepartout, who was furious, was not disinclined to make common cause with him. Here was an obstacle, indeed, which all his master’s banknotes could not remove. There was a general disappointment among the passengers, who, without reckoning the delay, saw themselves compelled to trudge fifteen miles over a plain covered with snow. (BI) tools are often the last stop of a data processing pipeline. It is where data is visualized for analysts who then extract insights from it. From the standpoint of a SaaS BI provider, what are we looking for in a database? In my job, we are in urgent need of support for fast-join queries. Business intelligence Why JOIN Query Matters I work as an engineer that supports a human resource management system. One prominent selling point of our services is . That means we allow users to customize their own dashboards: they can choose the fields they need and relate them to form the dataset as they want. self-service BI Join query is a more efficient way to realize self-service BI. It allows people to break down their data assets into many smaller tables instead of putting them all in a flat table. This would make data updates much faster and more cost-effective because updating the whole flat table is not always the optimal choice when you have plenty of new data flowing in and old data being updated or deleted frequently, as is the case for most data input. In order to maximize the time value of data, we need data updates to be executed really quickly. For this purpose, we looked into three OLAP databases on the market. They are all fast in some way but there are some differences. Greenplum is really quick in data loading and batch DML processing, but it is not good at handling high concurrency. There is a steep decline in performance as query concurrency rises. This can be risky for a BI platform that tries to ensure a stable user experience. ClickHouse is mind-blowing in single-table queries, but it only allows batch update and batch delete, so that's less timely. Welcome to JOIN Hell JOIN, my old friend JOIN, is always a hassle. Join queries are demanding for both engineers and the database system. Firstly, engineers must have a thorough grasp of the schema of all tables. Secondly, these queries are resource-intensive, especially when they involve large tables. Some of the reports on our platform entail join queries across up to 20 tables. Just imagine the mess. We tested our candidate OLAP engines with our common join queries and our most notorious slow queries. As the number of tables joined grows, we witness a widening performance gap between and ClickHouse. In most join queries, Apache Doris was about 5 times faster than ClickHouse. In terms of slow queries, Apache Doris responded to most of them within less than 1 second, while the performance of ClickHouse fluctuated within a relatively large range. Apache Doris And just like that, we decided to upgrade our data architecture with Apache Doris. Architecture that Supports Our BI Services Data Input: Our business data flows into DBLE, a distributed middleware based on MySQL. Then the DBLE binlogs are written into Flink, getting deduplicated, merged, and then put into Kafka. Finally, Apache Doris reads data from Kafka via its Routine Load approach. We apply the "delete" configuration in Routine Load to enable real-time deletion. The combination of Apache Flink and the idempotent write mechanism of Apache Doris is how we get exactly-once guarantee. We have a data size of billions of rows per table, and this architecture is able to finish data updates in one minute. In addition, taking advantage of Apache Kafka and the Routine Load method, we are able to shave the traffic peaks and maintain cluster stability. Kafka also allows us to have multiple consumers of data and recompute intermediate data by resetting the offsets. : Data Output As a self-service BI platform, we allow users to customize their own reports by configuring the rows, columns, and filters as they need. This is supported by Apache Doris with its capabilities in join queries. In total, we have 400 data tables, of which 50 has over 100 million rows. That adds up to a data size measured in TB. We put all our data into two Doris clusters on 40 servers. No Longer Stalled by Privileged Access Queries On our BI platform, privileged queries are often much slower than non-privileged queries. Timeout is often the case and even more so for queries on large datasets. Human resource data is subject to very strict and fine-grained access control policies. The role and position of users and the confidentiality level of data determine who has access to what (the data granularity here is up to fields in a table). Occasionally, we need to separately grant a certain privilege to a particular person. On top of that, we need to ensure data isolation between the multiple tenants on our platform. How does all this add to complexity in engineering? Any user who inputs a query on our BI platform must go through multi-factor authentication, and the authenticated information will all be inserted into the SQL via and then passed on to the OLAP engine. Therefore, the more fine-grained the privilege controls are, the longer the SQL will be, and the more time the OLAP system will spend on ID filtering. That's why our users are often tortured by high latency. in So how did we fix that? We use the in Apache Doris. Bloom Filter index By adding Bloom Filter indexes to the relevant ID fields, we improve the speed of privileged queries by 30% and basically eliminate timeout errors. Tips on when you should use the Bloom Filter index: For non-prefix filtering For and filters on a particular column in = For filtering on high-cardinality columns, such as UserID. In essence, the Bloom Filter index is used to check if a certain value exists in a dataset. There is no point in using the Bloom Filter index for a low-cardinality column, like "gender", for example, because almost every data block contains all the gender values. To All BI Engineers We believe self-service BI is the future in the BI landscape, just like is the future of artificial intelligence. Catching signals from others is how we started communicating as human beings. It all started, of course, with our vocal cords. Then we moved to smoke signals for long-distance communication. At some point, we discovered radio waves and are still using them for contact. This article will describe how you can tune in using and an SDR dongle. Fedora Linux My journey I got interested in radio communication as a hobby when I was a kid, while my local club, LZ2KRS, was still a thing. I was so excited to be able to listen and communicate with people worldwide. It opened a whole new world for me. I was living in a communist country back then and this was a way to escape just for a bit. It also taught me about ethics and technology. Year after year my hobby grew and now, in the Internet era with all the cool devices you can use, it’s getting even more exciting. So I want to show you how to do it with Fedora Linux and a hardware dongle. What is Ham Radio Amateur Radio (ham radio) is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics, and communication together. People use ham radio to talk across town, worldwide, or even into space, without the Internet or cell phones. What’s SWLing? To broadcast with your ham radio or SDR system, you need to obtain a license from a governmental body. But to intercept signals and listen to the open communication between two amateur radio stations, you don’t need one. The term SWLing comes from the abbreviation of Short Wave Listener, where you listen to stations communicating in the shortwave bands between 3 and 30 MHz. This can be used for long-distance communication using the , a layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. ionosphere To get started, you don’t need a license. Still, I recommend getting yourself an SWL sign to identify yourself in a listening contest. These are competitions for categories like who will discover the most connections in a month or who can listen to contacts from each country in the world. How to get an SWL Sign? There are two options: Contact your national radio club and ask them to issue one for you. I got my Czech one, OK1-36568, after a few weeks. Join the community and request a sign there. Short Wave Amateur Radio Listening You will get more information and help from either of these locations if you get stuck in some fashion! QSL Cards You can also use your sign to send QSL cards via post or electronically. This is a great way to communicate with people worldwide and make friends. Per Wikipedia, A QSL card is a written confirmation of either a two-way radio communication between two amateur radio or citizens band stations; a one-way reception of a signal from an AM radio, FM radio, television, or shortwave broadcasting station; or the reception of a two-way radio communication by a third party listener (in our case). A typical QSL card is the same size and made from the same material as a regular postcard; most are sent through snail mail. Replace the radio receiver with your Fedora Linux The focal point of the ham radio hobby is the radio transmitter/receiver. Most of the time, enthusiasts build their radio from scratch, but this differs from what I will write about here. SDR A software-defined radio (SDR) system is a radio communication system that uses software for the modulation and demodulation of radio signals. In other words, a piece of hardware and software replaces a radio transmitter/receiver. This helps you discover more in a way you are familiar with – a User Interface with built-in functions instead of the limited interface of a radio receiver. My explanation oversimplifies things, so if you want to go deep and read more about SDR, here is an excellent start. SDR Set Up under Fedora Linux Choosing the proper hardware If you search the Internet for an SDR dongle, you’ll find many ideas depending on your budget. In this tutorial, I’ll work with the one I have, which works well under Fedora 37. A note: The dongle covers frequencies from 25MHz to 1750MHz, which doesn’t cover the Short Wave bands. You would need an additional device to listen to them. This is included in the package I linked above. Some other hardware providers offer all-in-one products. Check if the dongle is visible Before installing anything, detect whether Fedora Linux recognizes your USB dongle. I hope you didn’t buy a fake one :-). Use the following command to list the USB devices on your system. lsusb One of the output lines (in the case of Nooelec) should be Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL2838 DVB-T Now proceed by installing the software you need Fedora offers a set of tools and drivers packaged as a group. Even though you would not use all the components in this package from the beginning, I recommend installing it. You’ll have more software to play with. sudo dnf group install 'Electronic Lab' I advise you to explore what’s in the group by running this command: sudo dnf group info 'Electronic Lab' Now check if you have everything set up correctly by running: rtl_test You should see something like this: Do not forget to kill this process because the device will be busy and cannot be used in the next step. A simple Ctrl + c works. Gqrx You have the dongle already in your device’s USB port and all the software you need to get started. Now it’s time to intercept your first signal. Start the program called . Don’t be alarmed by the strange interface. You’ll get used to it. Gqrx Configure the I/O Device Screen From the “Device” Dropdown, select the ‘ .’ RealtekRTL2838.. Leave the rest untouched for the moment. If you don’t see your device there, click the “ ” button at the bottom of the screen. Device Scan When your device is selected, click “OK,” and the dialogue will close. Configure the frequency screen Before you start intercepting signals, ensure there is something out there that proves everything works correctly. Since the dongle covers the FM radio band as well, do this: Locate your favorite radio station’s frequency. Mine is 105MHZ Set it in the Frequency field Select WFM (stereo) in the “Mode” dropdown. If you don’t do this, you will hear a sound. not Play And now, you need to start the reception by clicking the “play button” in your main menu. You will see the frequency visualized like this: If you hear a sound, everything will move to the next step. Check if everything is set up correctly if you don't hear anything. You may ask a question in the comments for this article; I can direct you to the proper forum to solve this. Feel free to play with some more FM broadcasts. You have the antenna for it in your pack. Let’s go Short Wave In the case of the Nooelec, you need to add one more device to the USB dongle and turn it on. Instructions on how to do that are included in the package you receive. In short, you plug the “Up Converter” into your USB dongle and make sure the switch is in the “convert” position. Some videos are available on how to do it if you get stuck. You will need an antenna and a good location Now things get trickier. If you live in an area where you don’t see an open space out your window or other buildings surrounding your building, you might have trouble catching a Short Wave radio amateur signal. Let’s try this to see if it works Try to be in the open. I usually listen from my terrace, which could be better but works under particular conditions. The term “mentor” sort of implies that you are spreading your knowledge. That's different from my approach. I see myself as a learner and a connector. I'm constantly looking to learn and help others. My goal is to help empower others so they're in a better position to succeed. For mentors and community builders, I think one of the key roles is to foster connectivity. It's vital to bring people together through shared experiences. When working with developers specifically, I find that they tend to be expert problem solvers and are reluctant to reach out and ask for help, especially when the problem itself is ambiguous. The reality is that developer and product communities are filled with people and leaders who feel valued and good about helping others. The journey to resolve tough or hard to tackle problems does not need to be a lonely one. I encourage everyone to reach out and not give up. We’ve all had help to get to this point and we cherish the opportunity to pay it forward. You are passionate about solving problems as part of a team - tell me more about how you foster collaboration. Listening is the #1 most important skill. In order to foster collaboration as a team, you need to have a shared perspective and understanding. It’s hard to attain that unless you are truly listening to others - and not just waiting to respond when someone else is talking. You have to be able to be empathetic and understand where others are coming from. If your colleagues feel like their ideas are heard and valued, they are going to be much more bought in on a project and more likely to share their perspective in the future – which is invaluable. I also try to empower them with tasks that go beyond their typical job description. This is how people grow, see other points of views, and gain a greater understanding of the business. What’s your one best piece of advice for aspiring or early-in-career developers? Be well-versed in the goal of the product, customer workflow, and the problem before diving into the solution. Talk to customers to understand what life is like in their shoes. This will lead to better decision making and a better product. Hard skills are important for developers, but so are soft skills. Update: I’ve turned this post into a weekend hustle — subscribe here to receive weekly insights from Joe Rogan and his guests. I used state-of-the-art language AI to analyze and index Joe Rogan’s podcast. Doing so resulted in a publicly available full-stack AI package. This blog demonstrates how I’ve made it happen. Stick around for a demo and amusing insights I distilled from the pods! This summer, I had another strike of information FOMO: I’d never heard a Joe Rogan podcast. I reached this “horrifying” conclusion as I met my techie friends at a pizza and beer-fueled after-work. Part of the group was COVID transplants from the US. They were talking about some guy named Joe Rogan, who was either the most extraordinary person alive or a blight on the world, depending on who was talking. After half an hour of “aha”, “Oh, yes, interesting” and “Oh, no, 🤯”… I finally came clean: “I have no idea who Joe Rogan is”. 😬 Back home, I felt overwhelmed by FOMO. It sounded like Joe Rogan was the king of debate, often exploring controversial topics with his guests. I like to challenge myself by looking at life through the lens of other people, so I sat down to queue up a bunch of episodes. But when I looked at the queue my brain exploded 🤯: 5,000+ hours of aliens, weed, and MMA. I can deal with aliens and weed, but 5,000+ hours? That’s more than 200 days of listening back-to-back. Even if I consumed at 2x speed like some of my “entrepreneur” friends, it would take me a whole year if I stretched myself thin and listened 8 hours a day. And that’s not counting the 15 NEW hours of content each week. There was only one conclusion: I would never catch up. 😭 💡 Then I realized, “Enias, you work at an NLP startup. Just have the computer tell you what this guy thinks”. AI to the rescue What I needed was a solution that summarizes podcasts for me. But of course, that wasn’t enough. I wanted a tool that responded to the random questions that popped into my brain. For example, this morning, I wondered: “What do Joe Rogan’s guests say about Cocaine? Spoiler alert: Joe Rogan and his guests like to talk about powdering their noses. Luckily, AI is catching up. Speech-to-text turns podcasts into text. Language models summarize long-form content in seconds (and a hefty amount of 💰). It sounds like we have a solution. Let’s start building, shall we? The Solution Disclaimer: I’m a founding engineer at . We’re building the fastest way to add language AI to products. To the NLP-savvy engineer, Steamship works like an NLP operating system that makes it easy to process and query natural language with few lines of Python. Steamship So logically, I ate my own dog food and built the podcast app using Steamship. It’s bundled in a package . Here’s how I did it: you can import and use on other podcasts and audio files 1. Transcribe the podcasts I used two transcription providers, AWS and , to turn audio into text. After some basic testing, I found to be better than AWS, especially when figuring out who was speaking using speaker diarization. Assembly.AI Assembly.AI 2. Analyse the transcriptions I used a mix of models from HuggingFace, , and OneAI to analyze the transcriptions. There isn’t a winner-takes-all to generate insights, and I found poor transcription quality and long podcasts degrade performance. Assembly.AI 3. Orchestrate the NLP models After plowing in Jupyter notebook for a day, I knew I couldn’t make it happen from just my laptop. Analyzing a single podcast takes 70 minutes. 40 minutes to transcribe the audio. Another 30 minutes to generate summaries and highlight language AI features. Combine the high latency with an unstable internet connection as a digital nomad, and you get chaos. This is where Steamship’s packages come in. Putting them down makes them feel like they’ve wasted their time and could negatively impact future interactions. If possible, share their thoughts and comments with others. Communicating their ideas to others reinforces your initial act of listening. In addition, they will feel empowered by your act of respect. Just make sure to give them credit. What not to do while actively listening Active listening shouldn’t focus on what not to do, but rather on uninterrupted listening. Active Listening as a Corporate Development Tool

A group of movie companies continues its legal efforts to hold VPN services liable for pirating subscribers. A new lawsuit lists Surfshark, VPN Unlimited, Zenmate, and ExpressVPN as defendants. Besides damages, the filmmakers want the VPNs to block pirate sites and start logging user data. The accused companies have yet to respond in court. Last week, these companies filed a new lawsuit at a federal court in Virginia, targeting four VPN services. In their complaint, the filmmakers accuse Surfshark, VPN Unlimited, Zenmate and ExpressVPN of being involved in widespread copyright infringement. The complaint sums up a long list of alleged wrongdoings. This includes allowing VPN subscribers to bypass the geographical restrictions of streaming services such as Netflix. “Defendants advertise their service for allowing their subscribers to bypass regional restrictions of streaming platforms to stream copies of copyright protected content including Plaintiffs’ Works from locations Plaintiffs have not authorized the platform to stream the Works,” the lawsuit reads. The filmmakers list various examples of promotional pages where the VPN providers claim that their services can bypass blocking efforts and other restrictive measures. In some cases, these are fairly outspoken, as the following announcement from UnlimitedVPN illustrates. BitTorrent Piracy In addition to bypassing geographical restrictions, the filmmakers also list various examples of VPN subscribers who are directly involved in sharing pirated movies via BitTorrent. While BitTorrent can also be used legally, the VPN companies allegedly promote their service as a tool to download copyright-infringing material anonymously. “Defendants promote their VPN services as a tool that can be used to pirate copyright-protected content without getting caught,” the complaint reads. “The records show Defendants’ subscribers downloaded the torrent files for reproducing Plaintiffs’ motion pictures such as The Brass Teapot, Hellboy, Rambo V: Last Blood, Angel Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, 2 Guns, And So It Goes, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt…” The filmmakers argue that some VPNs “partner” with notorious movie piracy websites to promote their service. For example, the site YTS.movie encourages the use of ExpressVPN. It’s not immediately clear whether ExpressVPN is aware of that, however. The movie companies further allege that VPN customers are engaged in other types of “outrageous conduct” under this privacy shield, including racist comments, child pornography, and even committing murder. Logging Repeat Infringers? The rightsholders have sent thousands of copyright infringement notices to hosting companies, which were reportedly forwarded to the VPN defendants. However, based on these notices, the accused VPNs can’t pinpoint individual subscribers. Most VPN users are connected to shared IP addresses that can’t be directly tied to single users, so the VPN companies simply don’t know which subscribers are flagged. According to the movie companies, VPNs can easily overcome this problem by logging user data. “Defendants have the capability to log their subscribers’ access to their VPN service but purposely delete the logged information or set up their system so that the logged information is deleted so that they can promote their service as a means to pirate copyright protected Works anonymously.” Damages, Site-Blocking, and Logging Based on these and other claims, the filmmakers argue that the VPN services are liable for direct, contributory, and vicarious copyright infringement. Through this lawsuit, they request compensation for the alleged damage. In addition to money, the filmmakers also request that the VPN services start blocking known pirate sites such as The Pirate Bay and RARBG, which have been listed in the notorious markets list of the US Trade Representative. Furthermore, they request an order that required the VPN companies to terminate the accounts of subscribers for which they receive three unique copyright noticed within 72 hours, unless the subscriber appeals. Needless to say, these are broad allegations that will likely be contested in court. At the time of writing, the VPN providers have yet to file an official response. This isn’t the first time that VPN providers are facing copyright infringement allegations. Previously, VPN.ht was sued as well, while Private Internet Access and TorGuard were recently added to previously filed lawsuits against Quadranet and respectively. The app is among top-grossing in the Business category of App Store currently #15 in the downloads in the Business Category worldwide. Anand Prakash PingSafe Summary: We discovered this vulnerability while doing open-source intelligence across mobile applications in different categories. PingSafe decompiled the IPA file and figured out S3 buckets, hostnames, and other sensitive details used by the application. The vulnerability allowed any malicious actor to listen to any user’s call recording from the cloud storage bucket of the application and an unauthenticated API endpoint that leaked the cloud storage URL of the victim’s data. Vulnerability Details: This vulnerability existed in the “/fetch-sinch-recordings.php” API endpoint of the “Automatic Call Recorder” application. An attacker can pass another user’s number in the recordings request and the API will respond with the recording url of the storage bucket without any authentication. It also leaks the victim’s entire call history and the numbers on which calls were made. Steps to Reproduce: Install the “Automatic Call Recorder” application on your phone. Intercept application’s traffic in Burp Suite/Zap Proxy. You will observe a POST API request to 167.88.123.157:80/fetch-sinch-recordings.php change UserID to victim’s phone number with country code. The response will have an s3 url for the recording and other sensitive details. Improving the work environment means improving productivity, retention, and growth — it’s as simple as that. So, let’s optimize the corporate mission statement and revitalize the communal ethos. Let’s open communication channels of transparent optimism and patience. Just kidding. If you try searching for “improving company culture,” you are going to get plenty of buzz words and empty sentences. Most advice columnists in the corporate sphere offer the appropriate advice, but because it lacks context, it also lacks focus and application. Let’s look at the two buzzword sentences above — which, unfortunately, are quite common. Let’s optimize the corporate mission statement and revitalize the communal ethos. This would seem like a great action to take as a company. You can use branding for marketing your understanding of social issues. However, your employees won’t buy into the branding change. An ‘ethos’ isn’t actionable. A mission statement isn’t relevant. Instead, you need to purposefully choose actions that, on a first-order, affect your employees. Let’s open communication channels of transparent optimism and patience. What does something like this even mean? Just because management says, “my door is always open,” it doesn’t create goodwill if the employees don’t feel the change and don’t feel the safety of the open-door policy. First, it could mean that your level or position in the firm is healthy. However, this isn’t and shouldn’t be representative of those above or below you. Second, it could mean that you are the unhealthy one. No one ever wants to hear that, but sometimes it is the reality. Now you need to change the way management interacts and oversees the staff based on the feedback given. Here are a few actions that might arise. You need to identify individuals that are creating a toxic work environment. : Fire them or get them business counseling. Either way, your lack of action will show that you care about their harmful attitudes more than the rest of the company. Solution You need to increase transparency about certain corporate stances or practices. : Use this moment as a chance to reflect on those actions. Make the information available but provide avenues for alternatives in future instances. Make this a moment where past actions don’t prescribe future choices. Solution You need to increase open communication from the bottom up. : No corporate solution ever happens from the bottom up. If you need staffers to communicate more, you need management to start the conversation. Have management recognize what staff is doing on a day-to-day basis, not once a year. Solution Recognize work and devotion and appreciate the individual. If you appear interested in their work, they will open and communicate. You need to increase diversity, acceptance, and happiness. : Hire people with different skillsets and place them in groups where everyone learns and grows as a unit. Pay your employees more than your competitors. Don’t give them perks but use the money for their salaries, paid time off, or better health insurance. Commit to building a community that is representative of the world culture and not a monoculture. Solution Finally, pay less attention to the bottom line and more to the bottom rung. Who is the lowest paid person in your company? Why are they the lowest paid person? What can you do to change that? 4. Repeat Keep this cycle going. Show that you aren’t committing to change once, but rather you are committing to being better than you were yesterday. Change takes time, commitment, and determination. You may make the wrong choices. Own them and rework them until they are corrected. Once you learn to live the change you seek, you will find your footing to grow your company beyond what it is today.
