This article is a collection of tips and experiences that might help you, or to which you might relate as a fellow generalist. Quick introduction — skippable I’ve been struggling with being a generalist most of my adult life. During my deepest identity and career crisis, I decided to talk to a psychologist. During our 2nd session he says, “Adam, you are most likely what we call a ‘multipotentiality’.” I go, “What? Does that mean I am like… smart or something?” “Not necessarily,” he replies, “it’s more about curiosity. People like you are more common nowadays. You should embrace it." It was the first time I became conscious of this fact. Before it was like “There is too many things. I am lost. I don’t know what to pursue. I want to pursue all at the same time.”, and it suddenly flipped to “Oh, this is who I am. This is how it’s supposed to be. I hate labeling things but,.. this label helps.” How to tell if you are a generalist? You focus on the bigger picture
You like learning
You are drawn to things you don’t know
As soon as you learn something, you consider it obvious, as if not even worth mentioning
You experience burnout quite often
You struggle with defining yourself If you managed to identify yourself, congratulations! I guess.. :/ It’s not something you can opt out of. Your head is just wired weird, unfortunately. Here are a few things you will probably need to live with: Prepare to sacrifice time Imagine mining gold. Imagine you knew exactly where the gold is. Now despite the fact that you know this, since you are a generalist, you will start digging in 27 other directions. Why? Well, exploration! Right? Something might be there, we never know. Going straight for the gold sounds too easy and boring. After excavating 27 tunnels that lead absolutely nowhere, you, naturally, start digging the 28th tunnel. You eventually end up burnout and decide to pick up the gold. That’s what I mean when I say prepare for a time sacrifice. As a generalist you need to get ready for this. It might take you longer to reach your goals, because your natural curiosity will often lead you astray. Maybe the 29th tunnel would hide something extraordinary? The urge to creativity As a generalist, you might often feel the urge to do things differently. Doing things the same as before feels mundane. But reinventing the wheel comes with a cost. Wheel is too powerful. Tested by centuries of time. Even vehicles that fly need wheels. Yet you might feel like trying and reimagining it. Here is my advice —just know when. Just know when you can afford to be innovative, and when it’s a death sentence (wheel). Anytime you feel the urge, just ask yourself “Is this a good time, or should I just force myself to do it as everyone expects me to?”. Trust me, you will get better at answering this question over time. Potential employers don’t trust you After I finished studying design, I was looking for a job either as a UX/UI designer or a frontend developer. I ended up working as a B2B marketing expert. Yeah.. Even though I can code — just launched an app — and have been practicing UX/UI design for more than 8 years, employers generally don’t trust me when they see all these skills in my CV. This is something us generalists simply have to reckon with. I recommend making multiple CVs — one for each of your skills. Also, we will have a much harder time building a strong portfolio in multiple areas, compared to a specialist, who is laser focused on a single skill. Again, it will just take more time for us.. Thrive on chaos Trying to get your life perfectly sorted out might be great for most people. Not for most generalists. But don’t worry about it. Or try not to. Continue exploring. I know it’s hard with all the looks and pressure from your family and peers who try hard to follow linear trajectories. Startups. Your perfect environment? Startups are companies that are just starting out. While their resources might not be scarce, they need to spend them wisely. If they can hire a lawyer and a data scientist in one person (I met this guy!), they will gladly do it, while a serious law firm might be like “What?!”. Also, there are not as many rules at a startup. The company is new, responsibilities are not strictly divided, rigorous processes are not yet in place. As a generalist, you probably enjoy wearing multiple hats, and startups reward you for wearing them! Don’t be afraid As a generalist, fear is your greatest enemy. People fear the unknown, but the unknown and the generalist are the very best friends. Don’t be afraid to accept tasks or jump into things you have zero experience with. This is where your adaptability shines. Jump in, adapt, figure out. You will likely have a much easier time doing this than other people would. Being broke If you are broke, the natural tendency is to find a job. With too many skills, this might prove surprisingly difficult. If you struggle, use your creativity. Try to come up with a business idea. Chances are your ideas will be above average. Use your wide range of skills to offer a unique service. I know this advice is not much. You will probably have to find the job eventually. Just know that thinking outside the box is okay even when it comes to money. Get ready to burn out I don’t know. I still struggle with this one. I guess just get ready for it. You juggle 10 balls cause you have to. Juggling 3 doesn’t quite stimulate you, you will end up bored and you will procrastinate. Too much = burnout, too little = boredom and procrastination. If anyone has tips on how to find a balance here, please let me know. To sum it up: Your strengths: Extremely adaptable

Get Ready, Future Web Developers! Let's create a simple HTML website that connects to a Postgres Database. For this example, we will be using JavaScript (Node JS, and Express JS) for its middleware functionalities. Whether you want to showcase your portfolio, run a blog, or complete a due mini project on web development, web development is a skill that's still in demand. The Learning Path Ahead We'll dive into the process of building a simple HTML website from scratch. We'll explore how to integrate a Postgres database, using JavaScript as middleware to handle API requests. To spice things up, we can also use Bootstrap5 to design the webpage! Express JS (Backend) Prerequisites Make sure Postgres is downloaded and ready to use. Also, download Node JS for installing npm packages like Express JS, Body Parser and Postgres APIs.

Download NodeJS here Step 1: Setup Postgres Database Create a new Postgres Database either using psql, which is the CLI for running SQL commands or a graphical user interface like pgAdmin (which comes pre-installed). For this demonstration, we will be using psql for creating the database. Open psql and enter the credentials to get started. Create a database called webapp and connect to it!
(You can use any name you want for your project!) CREATE database webapp; \c webapp Start building your table in this database by CREATE TABLE command. You can use Postgres docs to guide you with the commands.
For this demonstration, we are creating a student database that stores Name, Year and Branch. (Add more attributes if you want) CREATE TABLE student

Hey everyone, today I want to do a tutorial on one of my favorite ways to deploy a quick REST API, using NodeJS/Express, to an Amazon EC2 server. This technique essentially enables your EC2 server to respond to changes pushed to your GitHub repository. First Things First, “Hello World” Create a new directory on your machine for a NodeJS/Express app to live. I’m calling mine rekognition Open up a terminal, and run this command to initialize a package.json npm init -y Install express.js npm i express Create a basic express server with a ‘hello world’ at the default route const express = require('express');

We’re cooking with gas ⛽️ Let’s Go to the Cloud — Setup the Ec2 Server Here are the steps to launch your EC2 Instance: Log in to your AWS Management Console. Navigate to the EC2 dashboard, and launch a new instance.



Choose an appropriate AMI (Amazon Machine Image); I am using Amazon Linux 2. Select an instance type (e.g., t2.micro if you are under the free tier). Configure instance details, add storage, and add tags as necessary. Configure a security group to allow inbound traffic on ports you’ll need (at least TCP port 22 for SSH and your application’s port, and then 3000 for web traffic). Review and launch the instance; ensure that you save the key pair used for SSH access. Now, let’s test logging into your server via SSH on a terminal: ssh ec2-user@<YOUR_SERVER_IP> -i <YOUR_PRIVATE_KEY>.pem Replace the variables there with the values you defined for your EC2 instance. Many of you probably know that one of the most crucial steps in running a successful startup company is to define the right minimum viable product, simply known as MVP. Developing an MVP even after conducting initial market tests can be challenging, as the version of your product is essentially an unvalidated hypothesis. It's common for developers to waste time and resources on MVPs that are not well-defined. This guide will help you identify the core features of your product, enabling you to avoid wasting time and money. To define your MVP, you must envision the first instance of your product and find a working method on how to showcase its best possible features in a simple and brief way. Let’s take a look at the 7-step guide on how you can turn your product idea into a successful startup and appeal to early adopters. How to Find Your MVP MVP is not a beta version of your product designed to determine bugs. It is also not an idea written down on a piece of paper or presented in a couple of slides. Your MVP is intended to test market demand assumptions, refine the product vision, and help you choose where to focus future development efforts. MVPs are therefore a very effective strategy for determining your product-market fit. So, what should be your first few moves when turning your idea into a viable product? 1. Your Idea: The Basics Let’s start with the basics. What is the ground idea of your perfect product, and what is your reality at the moment? At this stage, your priority is to analyze the problem that you are trying to solve. Describe the size of your problem, and provide all the necessary statistics and data – how does this problem impact your user? How does it impact your product idea? Are there any existing products that can successfully solve the same type of problem? Collect as much evidence as possible – it can help you massively in achieving success. Do not forget to keep it well-structured. For instance, let’s take a look at Uber. In the past, getting a taxi could be rather annoying when you would have to wait at a curb in an attempt to catch a car. Uber appealed to those who wanted the ability to rapidly call a cab by simply pulling out their smartphone, making a couple of clicks in a user-friendly app, and therefore, solving the initial problem and pain point completely. 2. Understand Your Users During this stage, you need to analyze the current state of the market, identify your target audience, and study your competitors. This will help you understand how your product can stand out among others and what features are important to your product users. Here, your product team must ensure they clearly know who their users are. Identify each class (or type) of the user, their needs, wants, pain points, expectations, experience, and other metrics you find useful in your case. The final step of your research should be to draft the so-called success criteria – the standard to judge whether an objective has been achieved – for each type of product user. Once you have identified your users, it’s time to learn if you can actually understand them. Collect information about their behavior, their profiles, and habits – of course, by complying with the data collection laws in your country. Get as much knowledge and publicly accessible insights into who your users are. You can also carry out a few interviews, and create surveys or focus groups to further deepen your research. 3. What Is Your Big Picture Product? What would your product look like if you had all the possible resources, time, and investment? What is the ideal state of your product? It is recommended that you list down all the valid ideas collected from your team that could help your startup reach its final stage of development. Moreover, you can also collect feedback from your users. To help you think big, you can answer the following questions: What major issue are you aiming to address? What ambitions do you have for your product? Which user requirements are you trying to meet? What challenges faced by users are you aiming to overcome? What tasks require improvement, efficiency, or innovation that your product will accomplish? 4. What Is Your Minimum Product? Now that you have got an idea regarding your ideal product, your next step is to define what would be enough for your product to work with the least amount of resources, time, and investment. Identify your best interactions with the users and gather a list of top-priority features that would be able to provide just enough value. The question you must answer before you move on to the next step is ‘What is the single thing that your product absolutely must do to fulfill its promises?’  For instance, if your goal is to create a trustworthy and efficient communication platform, you might say that your product must deliver seamless and secure communication between users without compromising privacy or data integrity. 5. What Is Your Viable Product? Gather your team’s and users’ feedback – it’s time to generate ideas! It might take a couple of brainstorming sessions, but your end goal is to ensure you have captured a few high-potential thoughts. Here are several questions you might want to answer at this stage: Do you have the necessary skills, expertise, time, resources, and funding? Do you have sufficient knowledge and resources to deliver value solely to early adopters? Have you conducted thorough user research and identified potential early adopters? Do you have mechanisms in place to gather user feedback and collect data on user interactions and contexts? Can you handle product scalability? Can your MVP cope with the potential surge in user activity? Once you have collected all the necessary data, it is time to review and combine your ideas in order to define your MVP draft, which should show the way your product solves the problems you indicated during the first few stages of research and with what features this result is reached. 6. Define Your MVP Put together the results of the above steps and define your minimum viable product. Keep in mind that defining your MVP means that you already have your product vision on a much larger scale.
