CONCLUSION In this paper, we proposed an anonymous yet accountable contract wallet system based on account abstraction and accountable ring signatures. The proposed system is implemented using Solidity for zkSync. Moreover, we discussed potential of the proposed system, e.g., medical information sharing and asset management. Since the current implementation results using Solidity show the required costs are expensive, our result here might be regarded as somewhat conceptual. However, to the best of our knowledge, no previous implementation result is known that confirms the cost to run an accountable ring signature scheme in Solidity to date, and we believe that our result can be seen as an important stepping stone to provide anonymity and accountability simultaneously in blockchain systems. Investigating other applications of the proposed system will be left to future work. The underlying account ring signature scheme does not provide post-quantum security due to the discrete logarithm-based construction. Thus, it is difficult to accept the current construction as a platform to manage large amounts of assets due to the progress of quantum computing. Because a post-quantum accountable ring signature scheme has been proposed in [7], it would be interesting to employ the scheme, precisely, how to implement it using Solidity is left to future work. THE GRAND TETON MINE THE GRAND TETON MINE Away on the western border of Wyoming, in the all but inaccessible heart of the Rocky Mountains, three mighty brothers, “The Big Tetons,” look perpendicularly into the blue eye of Jenny’s Lake, lying at the bottom of the profound depression among the mountains called Jackson’s Hole. Bracing against one another for support, these remarkable peaks lift their granite spires from 12,000 to nearly 14,000 feet into the blue dome that arches the crest of the continent. Their sides, and especially those of their chief, the Grand Teton, are streaked with glaciers, which shine like silver trappings when the morning sun comes up above the wilderness of mountains stretching away eastward from the hole. When the first white men penetrated this wonderful region, and one of them bestowed his wife’s name upon Jenny’s Lake, they were intimidated by the Grand Teton. It made their flesh creep, accustomed though they were to rough scrambling among mountain gorges and on the brows of immense precipices, when they glanced up the face of the peak, where the cliffs fall, one below another, in a series of breathless descents, and imagined themselves clinging for dear life to those skyey battlements. But when, in 1872, Messrs. Stevenson and Langford finally reached the top of the Grand Teton—the only successful members of a party of nine practised climbers who had started together from the bottom—they found there a little rectangular enclosure, made by piling up rocks, six or seven feet across and three feet in height, bearing evidences of great age, and indicating that the red Indians had, for some unknown purpose, resorted to the summit of this tremendous peak long before the white men invaded their mountains. Yet neither the Indians nor the whites ever really conquered the Teton, for above the highest point that they attained rises a granite buttress, whose smooth vertical sides seemed to them to defy everything but wings. Winding across the sage-covered floor of Jackson’s Hole runs the Shoshone, or Snake River, which takes its rise from Jackson’s Lake at the northern end of the basin, and then, as if shrinking from the threatening brows of the Tetons, whose fall would block its progress, makes a détour of one hundred miles around the buttressed heights of the range before it finds a clear way across Idaho, and so on to the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean. On a July morning, about a month after the visit of Dr. Max Syx to the assembled financiers in New York, a party of twenty horsemen, following a mountain-trail, arrived on the eastern margin of Jackson’s Hole, and pausing upon a commanding eminence, with exclamations of wonder, glanced across the great depression, where lay the shining coils of the Snake River, at the towering forms of the Tetons, whose ice-striped cliffs flashed lightnings in the sunshine. Even the impassive broncos that the party rode lifted their heads inquiringly, and snorted as if in equine astonishment at the magnificent spectacle. One familiar with the place would have noticed something, which, to his mind, would have seemed more surprising than the pageantry of the mountains in their morning sun-bath. Curling above one of the wild gorges that cut the lower slopes of the Tetons was a thick black smoke, which, when lifted by a passing breeze, obscured the precipices half-way to the summit of the peak. Had the Grand Teton become a volcano? Certainly no hunting or exploring party could make a smoke like that. But a word from the leader of the party of horsemen explained the mystery. “There is my mill, and the mine is underneath it.” The speaker was Dr. Syx, and his companions were members of the financial congress. When he quitted their presence in New York, with the promise to return within an hour for their reply, he had no doubt in his own mind what that reply would be. He knew they would accept his proposition, and they did. No time was then lost in communicating with the various governments, and arrangements were quickly perfected whereby, in case the inspection of Dr. Syx’s mine and its resources proved satisfactory, America and Europe should unite in adopting the new metal as the basis of their coinage. As soon as this stage in the negotiations was reached, it only remained to send a committee of financiers and metallurgists, in company with Dr. Syx, to the Rocky Mountains. They started under the doctor’s guidance, completing the last stage of their journey on horseback. “An inspection of the records at Washington,” Dr. Syx continued, addressing the horsemen, “will show that I have filed a claim covering ten acres of ground around the mouth of my mine. This was done as soon as I had discovered the metal. The filing of the claim and the subsequent proceedings which perfected my ownership attracted no attention, because everybody was thinking of the south pole and its gold-fields.” The party gathered closer around Dr. Syx and listened to his words with silent attention, while their horses rubbed noses and jingled their gold-mounted trappings. “As soon as I had legally protected myself,” he continued, “I employed a force of men, transported my machinery and material across the mountains, erected my furnaces, and opened the mine. I was safe from intrusion, and even from idle curiosity, for the reason I have just mentioned. In fact, so exclusive was the attraction of the new gold-fields that I had difficulty in obtaining workmen, and finally I sent to Africa and engaged negroes, whom I placed in charge of trustworthy foremen. Accordingly, with half a dozen exceptions, you will see only black men at the mine.” “And with their aid you have mined enough metal to supply the mints of the world?” asked President Boon. “Exactly so,” was the reply. “But I no longer employ the large force which I needed at first.” “How much metal have you on hand? I am aware that you have already answered this question during our preliminary negotiations, but I ask it again for the benefit of some members of our party who were not present then.” “I shall show you to-day,” said Dr. Syx, with his curious smile, “2500 tons of refined artemisium, stacked in rock-cut vaults under the Grand Teton.” “And you have dared to collect such inconceivable wealth in one place?” “You forget that it is not wealth until the people have learned to value it, and the governments have put their stamp upon it.” “True, but how did you arrive at the proper moment?” “Easily. I first ascertained that before the Antarctic discoveries the world contained altogether about 16,000 tons of gold, valued at $450,000 per ton, or $7,200,000,000 worth all told. Now my metal weighs, bulk for bulk, one-quarter as much as gold. It might be reckoned at the same intrinsic value per ton, but I have considered it preferable to take advantage of the smaller weight of the new metal, which permits us to make coins of the same size as the old ones, but only one-quarter as heavy, by giving to artemisium four times the value per ton that gold had. Thus only 4000 tons of the new metal are required to supply the place of the 16,000 tons of gold. The 2500 tons which I already have on hand are more than enough for coinage. The rest I can supply as fast as needed.” The party did not wait for further explanations. They were eager to see the wonderful mine and the store of treasure. Spurs were applied, and they galloped down the steep trail, forded the Snake River, and, skirting the shore of Jenny’s Lake, soon found themselves gazing up the headlong slopes and dizzy parapets of the Grand Teton. When Kurt Wilson, a computer science student at the University of Central Florida, heard that his university was using a controversial online proctoring tool called Honorlock, he immediately wanted to learn more. The company, whose business has boomed during the pandemic, promises to ensure that remote students don’t cheat on exams through AI-powered software used by students that “monitors each student’s exam session and alerts a live, US-based test proctor if it detects any potential problems.” scan students’ faces to verify their identity, track specific phrases that their computer microphone captures, and even promises to search for and remove test questions that leak online. Before, students searching online for answers may simply have turned up nothing, while now, a potentially incriminating website will be there to tempt them. Ceceilia Parnther, an associate professor at St. John’s University who has studied remote proctoring, said the situation is ironic: Students “are being set up” through honeypots, she said, in an attempt to detect academic integrity violations, a practice that’s itself ethically questionable. “The face-to-face comparison is a teacher walking around with the answer key and putting it on the corner of each desk and then penalizing students if they look over at it,” she said. Honorlock is not directly mentioned on the sites Wilson found. But the sites list the same test questions as each other and include terms of service pages that mention the email address “privacy@hlprivacy.com.” The network activity of the pages, reviewed by The Markup, also shows data being sent to an Honorlock.com server. To understand precisely what data the honeypot sites might be tracking, The Markup inspected the page’s source code and network activity using Firefox’s developer tools for each of the still-operating websites noted by Wilson. We found that the sites captured data on a visitor’s type of device, where that visitor’s mouse was on the page, what they entered into a search bar, and details on what they clicked. Honorlock didn’t respond to a request for comment on the sites or to answer other questions about its privacy practices. It’s not clear how many students have been caught by the company’s honeypots. That mindset itself facilitates cheating, she says, by subtly suggesting to students that they might as well cheat because teachers expect them to anyway. “Students see that there’s an environment where it’s automatically assumed that they are not to be trusted,” Parnther said. Eaton proposes that educators should consider a more radical rethinking of testing, one that doesn’t rely on surveilling students. Punishing students for using their devices fundamentally goes against how learning works in the age of the internet, Eaton says, and the cat-and-mouse game of sussing out possible cheaters isn’t working. Moving to a better system might mean shifting to more oral or open-book exams, for example, which still demonstrate proficiency without the specter of simply Googling answers. There will always be some level of cheating on exams, Parnther argues, but the costs of cracking down on students is now coming at the expense of their education. “While we can’t ensure that no students will ever cheat, we can make it a norm that most students are just trying to do their best work,” she said. The word "Nature” is a very broad term. It can be used to refer to very different things. For example, a predator hunting prey is a manifestation of nature, a volcano that is erupting (or not) is part of nature, the weather cycle, the movement of tectonic plates, the bio-diversity of the planet, the mineral resources, the landforms, the constellations, the stars, etc. are the kind of stuff that comes to mind when one refers to the term “nature”. Then there is nature that does not occur naturally. The artificial world created by man is also part of nature. The air conditioning system in my room, the electric power supply, the device on which I am writing down this post, and the internet where I hope to share my thoughts with you, are also part of nature. For the naturalist out there, the things made by man might not be as majestic and holy as the ones made by God. For the physicist, on the other hand, the things made by God and the things made by man are all made up of the same stuff. The predator and the keyboard are both made up of atoms, and the predator hunting the prey and the keyboard typing a letter are both manifestations of the same laws of nature. These laws of nature present a few mysteries as we dig deep  into the building blocks of matter and energy. These building blocks can be conveniently referred to as quanta. We will discuss these more in a while. Nature at the most basic “quantum” level Nature at the level of building blocks of matter and energy is very different from how we experience it in our everyday life. In our everyday life, we experience that a ball thrown towards a wall will hit the wall and bounce back. With practice and more experience, we can predict where the ball will hit on the wall. This determinism is the hallmark of the world around us, and it vanishes as we approach nature at the most basic level. A quantum ball thrown at a wall may or may not bounce back. It may just tunnel through the wall. Even if it does bounce back, there is absolutely no way to tell where it will hit the wall. This is a mystery of nature. Nature seeks to hide the information at the most fundamental level. Building blocks of matter and energy Let us look at the examples of the quantum ball discussed above --- the building blocks of matter and energy.  The building blocks of matter are atoms. They themselves are made up of  sub-atomic particles.  The most interesting one is the electron. The electrons in motion constitute the electric current we are all familiar with (It runs all our electrical and electronic appliances). A single electron fired towards a negatively charged plate is an example of a quantum ball hitting the wall. The  building blocks of energy (for our purpose today) are photons. These are a little hard to explain, but a working understanding is all we need to follow the argument. Look at the light source in your room. The light coming towards you basically consists of a large number of photons. The brighter the light is, the more abundant the photons are. If you reduce the intensity of light, for example, by placing a screen in front of you, you reduce the number of photons reaching you. The things we see are because of the photons reaching our eyes--- either directly emitted or scattered by those things (there is also a part of the vision that we do not actually see and merely cook up in our brains. That is the story of another mystery). Interactions between building blocks The interactions between the building blocks of matter and energy are simple. An atom can absorb a photon and go into the excited energy state. It can later emit that energy and come back to its preferred ground state. This simple energy exchange is at the heart of a technique that uniquely identifies all the elements in the universe and has been efficiently used by scientists for the last 200 years. The mystery The mystery involved in the simple energy exchange is that nature does not allow us to know . If there are a bunch of atoms, we can not know . Once an atom goes into the excited state, we do not know . We can not know in . We can not know when an atom will absorb the photon which one will absorb it when it will emit light to come back to the ground state which direction the emitted photon will go which atom it will excite next. The seemingly simple questions tend to be nature’s deeply guarded secrets. Nature’s answer to all the above questions is the following:  “ ”.  This randomness is the mystery of nature. Nature at the quantum level plays a dance between the atoms and the photons,  and we are never allowed to know the next step. This is one of nature’s most secretly guarded mystery, and a fundamental limitation to our knowledge. God will play a dice, and a random output will be selected Away from this deep level, nature does not have problems with us uncovering its secrets. It has let us hear that were uttered over a billion ago. It has very recently allowed us to look at of the universe. But it has issues if we ask which photon we will see next. If you find it a bit uncomfortable, then you are not alone. This state of affairs has troubled . the whispers of the universe the very early light some of our very best minds We remain unaware of the mystery because we seldom witness individual quantum events. We always experience such a large collection of these events happening so fast that the underlying dance and the mystery are completely masked. However, there are ways to explore and appreciate the mystery. A thought experiment Imagine yourself in a well-lit room with a few more people. You can all agree on everything you see in the room, including the color of the light. We take the color of light to be white to be more dramatic. Now here comes the first surprise. There are no white photons. The white color you see is your brain’s way of coping with an enormous number of differently colored photons.   “How enormous is that number?" can be easily googled or read . in another post Now let’s slow down things. Imagine that we reduce the intensity of light. This will lower the number of available photons, the room will become darker, and it will be difficult to distinguish colors. This is a limitation of our vision.  Our eyes are not designed to see the colors in the dark. The night vision receptors in our eyes are different from the ones we use in daylight. However, we can overcome this limitation by pretending that we have people with exceptionally good vision (after all, this is a thought experiment). If we keep on reducing the intensity of light, we will reach a point where only a few photons will be emitted by the source at a time (Single-photon sources are commercially available). At this point, it will be pitch dark, and the mystery will reveal itself. The source will still keep on emitting photons --- one at a time, but not all those photons will reach the eyes of the people in the room. Most of the time, they will report no light. Once in a while, someone in the room will report a little light spark. Every time this happens, he will be alone to report it. No one else in the room will see it. No two people will ever report the same spark. When you see the spark, no one else in the room will be able to see it, and when someone else sees it, you won’t be able to see it. A single photon may go anywhere in the room, but it can only be seen by a single individual (one receptor in one eye only). Moreover, the color of the spark will never be white simply because there are no white photons. Every time the light is emitted, it will have a different color may be red, green, or blue. Every time a person reports the light spark, he will report a different color. Every event now will be a different subjective experience. If you visualize the scenario discussed above, you can appreciate the quantum dance nature is playing. Now here is something to baffle your sense of reality. The quantum dance is going on right now in front of all of us. The scenario discussed in the thought experiment above is the reality that is going on right now in front of all of us. The part of the light that you are seeing right now can not be seen by any other person. The other person sees the other part of the light. The only thing is that we have so much light available that all subjective experiences coalesce into one objective reality. In our experiment, if we restore the light to its normal intensity, the quantum dance will disappear, and everyone will once again start reporting “white” light. Nature’s naked mystery The mystery has  its uses. The randomness and the indeterminism that follows may help us come up with a satisfactory free will. We might be able to settle the and our existence. Finally, we’ve invented the sci-fi technology of the future! And what do we do? Make tech support chatbots and check insurance claims… A few years ago, I was prepared for dazzling AI futurism, but the market continues to lag behind my expectations. I want fun AI. I want a Star Trek that spawns any food on command and a . replicator robot dog Personally, the first thing I did when I got access to deep-learning software was to create “Parm,” an algorithm that could identify types of cheese from pictures. It couldn’t tell gouda from sharp cheddar, but I loved it like it was my own baby. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any reason for Parm to exist. The backend alone would have cost tens of thousands to put in production, not to mention continuous maintenance requirements. And who was going to use it? Olive Garden? Ultimately, I sunset Parm to make space on my hard drive for icky medical imaging data of tumors. I might have shed a tear. The reality of AI today is that deep learning is too expensive and too gatekept to be fun. AI products have to justify their existence by generating a significant amount of income, so applications end up restricted to uninspiring corporate tasks. However, fun and useful AI does exist. Some examples are well-known, like , medical applications that screen for or , and the , but I’ve found a few extremely underreported use cases from my time in the industry that deserve far more attention, like Google’s Perfect Cookie AI covid cancer Wildlife Insights photo inventory these garden-building robots. I hope that these unique AI applications help you feel a little more optimistic about a glamourous, hi-tech future. I’ve also included some links to free and accessible machine learning software at the end, just in case you feel inspired to make a Parm of your own. 1. Using AI with Aerial Lasers to Spot Ancient, Giant Monster Shrines Selfishly, I put first because I worked on the technology behind it, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing. this one A team of Japanese researchers collected 3D scans of land around Nasca Pampa, Peru with lasers, generating an unapproachable amount of landform data. To tackle data processing tasks that would take humans decades, they trained an AI model to find intentional shapes in the mess of natural formations, specifically looking for a type of ancient art called biomorphic geoglyphs. The biomorphic geoglyphs are giant pictograms carved into the landscape by the ancient indigenous Nascan people. They depict detailed fire-breathing monsters and vengeful gods, typically ranging in size from 150 to 330 feet across. Hundreds of these beasts were hand-dug deep enough into the soil to still be visible after 2000 years of erosion, indicating that they must have been significant to the people who made them. Scientists suspect the figures were components of religious worship, but their purpose remains unknown. 2. Wanna put Skyscraper on the Hawaiian Coastline but Don’t Wanna Ruin the View? No Prob. My home city of Austin, Texas happens to also be the fastest growing city in the U.S.. I know the architects are doing their best to keep up, but their designs often don’t address the issues I need them to fix. However, this might change thanks to AI like . Their system for modeling infinite iterations of architectural features without technical know-how invites anyone to contribute their expertise to design more effective, inclusive spaces. Scout Scout is an easy-to-use data modeling AI tool that runs criteria like street width, sunlight, urban density, and even ocean views to generate optimized construction plans. Instead of one architectural firm running a handful of designs, now a whole team can collaborate to run thousands of models and select the best compromise to meet everyone’s needs. For example, a social worker could make recommendations on public services which could then be plugged into the model to ideate solutions for public spaces and transportation. Yes, I’m talking about the end of rush-hour traffic. 3. Giving the Mayflower a Do-over, This Time without a Single Colonizer Onboard Another project that took off from my work was the , an unmanned AI-driven boat charted to retrace Columbus’s course from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth, USA. This time, however, the boat won’t bring any white invaders. Instead, the boat will collect data about ocean health that can be used to combat threats like microplastics and chemical pollution. Mayflower Autonomous Ship The technology isn’t so different from what you might find in a self-driving car, but with an extra spatial dimension and an understanding of maritime traffic laws instead of stop signs. Not having humans onboard also frees up space for cargo — such as advanced computing equipment for tracking endangered whales — and offers huge potential for cheaper worldwide shipping. It’s not far from Hyperion’s iconic self-driving ! Windwagon 4. Beating You at Your Own Game without Ever Learning the Rules You might be familiar with AI beating humans at our own games such as , Jeopardy, , and perhaps most infuriating of all, , but I’ve noticed an astounding detail about many of these victories that remains totally underrated: these bots are often self-trained. They might get an overview of the game’s basic rules, but the rest of their education involves zero human input. chess Atari poker These AI models, like Google’s , teach themselves winning game strategy over millions of iterations. AlphaGo ran 30 million games in its first 40 days. H during that time, it independently recreated the same gameplay trends that humankind came up with starting at the game’s invention 2500 years ago. We are becoming more and more dependent on expertise that deals with computers, algorithms, and machines, and this need is mirrored in the salary of tech workers. Hours could go by and I wouldn’t notice. This is a serious issue when scheduling meetings and whatnot… But somehow I manage. If you could change a global issue that is one of the world’s biggest problems today, what would you change? That’s a complicated question. There’s many global issues that I would change, and I don’t want to get too political either. This will sound cliche but it’s a cause that is very dear to me -- bringing the maker movement to the places that need it most. I’ve made things since I was a kid, and for the longest time, I felt like I didn’t have a support network. That all changed after I stumbled upon the maker community - I truly began to feel that there were people that understood me, even if my economic reality distanced me from traditional startup hubs and metropolitan areas. Recently my company joined a small but growing AI fight club. The story was covered by hundreds of news sites including , , , , , and and made the front page of . It showed that no matter how many times this showdown takes place, there remains something dramatic about AI taking on humans. I have since been asked by others in our narrow field (there are more than ) and from other sectors to provide some thoughts on the “whys” and “how’s” of doing something similar. The “why” of doing such a test, fundamentally relates to the simple definition of Artificial Intelligence. AI is a “system that learns to perform intelligent tasks we usually think only humans can do.” Almost every industry over the past decade has seen a point where we have seen technology overtake (skilled) humans. But demonstrating this crossing of the robotic Rubicon remains a crucial step. Creating a dynamic competition is something for your team of researchers and engineers to rally around. It also provides a shorthand way to categorically and independently affirm a shift in your field. The more it is repeated by as many players as possible, the better for the adoption of AI and technology. Helping demystify “magic” from your profession The second “why” for doing an AI vs Robot matchup is that in many professions, there is an inherent human “magic” associated with tasks. Historic showdowns necessarily challenge this assertion. In our case, it opened up a centuries old profession’s eyes to the inefficient manual processes. Powerfully, it also helped to unhype AI for a skeptical audience. Shena Shenoi, a Harvard-educated business lawyer, and Non-Disclosure Agreement expert, was one of 20 lawyers who took on our machine in the showdown for the most lawyerly work of contract review. She said: “The test gave me a practical glimpse into how technology can automate a staple of the legal profession — reviewing Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). The type of issue-spotting carried out is credible and quite similar to how we (manually)do this type of work and have for decades.” Bringing back humanity (through robots) Being beaten by an algorithm does not actually hurt humans. The wonderful , shows how DeepMind’s AlphaGo Lee Sedol, the international Go champion. The overriding message was not the rise of scary machines, but the beauty of the pursuit itself and the nobility of the champions for humanity, both Go players and the creators of the technology. AlphaGo documentary defeated Demis Hassabis CEO and Co-Founder, DeepMind makes this exact point recalling lessons from his historic achievement. “We’ve learned two important things from this experience. First, this test bodes well for AI’s potential in solving other problems. AlphaGo has the ability to look “globally” across a board — and find solutions that humans either have been trained not to play or would not consider. He wrote on his blog: “This has huge potential for using AlphaGo-like technology to find solutions that humans don’t necessarily see in other areas. Second, while the match has been widely billed as “man vs. machine,” AlphaGo is really a human achievement. Lee Sedol and the AlphaGo team both pushed each other toward new ideas, opportunities and solutions — and in the long run that’s something we all stand to benefit from.” The How’s: Good Humans +a clear structure But how should you start to think about creating such a challenge? Firstly, get the best participants. Noam Brown who created , which decisively defeated four of the says his number one piece of advice is: “Challenge the very best humans, and structure the rules of the competition so that a victory by the AI would leave no doubt that the AI is truly superior.” Libratus world’s best human poker professionals In our lawyer contract-off, the hardest challenge was getting the best participants. This was crucial. This left no doubt as to the superiority of AI in ploughing through legal issues-spotting in 26 seconds (it took each lawyer an average of 92 minutes). Our particular test sourced 20 top corporate lawyers whose decades of contract experience spanned companies including Goldman Sachs and Cisco, and global law firms including Alston & Bird and K&L Gates. We further sourced the best human “referees”. We enlisted leading legal academics at top US universities and veteran US corporate lawyers to check our methodology and a further lawyer to oversee the competition. If you can, as a further reinforcement, ask the academics involved (if you are not the academic involved) to publish the findings in a top publication (such as Libratus outlining its findings in ). Science The How’s 2: Build drama Law is rarely like in the movies. To watch a live match up of reviewing Non-Disclosure Agreements we realized might not have the ready-made TV viewing power of watching Lee Sedol’s sweat angst and tears against AlphaGo. However, in the place of TV cameras, we used every aspect of data we had gathered. This helped show in our microscope competition the daily toil of lawyers even for such a real everyday challenge of reviewing 5 NDAs (each lawyer was required to review 30 legal issues, 11 A4 pages, 153 paragraphs, and 3213 clauses). The entire methodology was used to create a 40-page study which we published. To maintain human drama, alongside a lengthy science explanation provided by our CTO and scientific advisors, we used the data to create attractive simple graphics. The success of a narrow test helps companies move to other areas and further grow and highlight the power of their AI technology. In the mid-2000s, IBM unleashed IBM Watson on contestants on Jeopardy. Its victory was a precursor for IBM to train Watson in areas such as medicine. On the initial Jeopardy test for their technology, there were challenges. Paul Horn, then director of IBM Research told Tech Republic: “They initially said no, it’s a silly project to work on, it’s too gimmicky, it’s not a real computer science test, . But ultimately the entire IBM team got behind it to showcase their technology. Horn says: “The questions are complicated and nuanced, and it takes a unique type of computer to have a chance of beating a human by answering those type of questions”. and we probably can’t do it anyway” The AI-Human challenge still captures our imagination month as it continues to evolve. In May Google showed off a jaw-dropping new capability of Google Assistant as it placed a call and made an appointment with a human worker at a hair salon. It is the nuance of the computer that can interact in everyday human tasks that still astonishes us. Just like every lawyer has done a contract review, all of us have booked a hair appointment, putting this sophisticated tech into a relatable setting. If people look under the hood they will see that behind headline-grabbing results are a team of people. It takes years of hard work and setbacks along the way to do a simple showcase such as it (it took about 20 researchers three years to reach a level where IBM could win, and four years to get our AI to match wits on even the most common legal contracts). However rather than focus on the graft of the technology, these match ups provide a clear use case for the technology in a simple, but powerful way. It also helps to reignite interest and think anew about an old field whether it is the ancient game of Go or centuries-old practice of law. Following the AlphaGo publicity, searches for Go rules and Go boards spiked in the U.S. In China, tens of millions watched live streams of the matches, and the “Man vs. Machine Go Showdown” hashtag saw 200 million pageviews on Sina Weibo. There were 15 million viewers tuned in to the rerun of Jeopardy. Since then Petra has held various roles within the property industry before becoming the General Manager of the real estate portal realestateVIEW.com.au. In 2016, Petra joined as a general manager for Melbourne based CarSales. Her journey to leadership came early, becoming a GM at the age of 27. Her proudest feat in her current role is her ability to drive focus and growth in the lifestyle, leisure and industry brands for Carsales. Adelaine Ho, Head of Diversity, Inclusion & Technical Lead at hipages Adelaine started at hipages in 2009 as a front-end developer, throughout the growth of the company she’s pioneered hipages diversity initiatives, ensuring hipages maintains and creates a diverse and inclusive environment. Her proudest project to date is the Get Quotes platform and the messaging centre, describing the products as the stand out compared to competitors when released in 2012. Within a year of launch, the new product was turning over 17,000 jobs a week. And today, 100,000 jobs a month. Sophie Langford, Head of Marketing, Asia Pacific and Japan, Qualtrics Sophie joined Qualtrics within a year of launch into Sydney from the US. As the first marketing hire, she was brought on to start-up the marketing function and team. Launching and growing of the Qualtrics brand in APAC has been her proudest achievement to date, Qualtrics has gone from no brand awareness to being a key player in the market research, customer experience, and employee experience spaces in just 2.5 years. Michelle Bendschneider, Director of Products, Telstra Michelle first became a people leader at 22 having a team of roughly 15. She started in the world of SAP, in the mid-90s as it was taking off, at the time, deploying one of the most significant solutions for that product in the world. Overnight she had gone from an individual contributor without a team, to a leader. With a background originally in Software Engineering, she has held executive roles in Sales, Services and Technology solution domains, across multiple industry segments and geographies. Hollie King, Head of Sales Strategy & Operations and Finance, Qualtrics Hollie too joined Qualtrics having worked across the finance and tech space both here in Sydney and the UK across 15 years. Hollie started at Qualtrics as part of the APJ the founding team nearly three years ago to set the strategy with sales on entering new markets, operationalizing and executing to those plans. A key recent project of impact to-date in the role has been forming a financing partnership for Qualtrics with Macquarie Bank. A great brand in the Australian marketplace, providing innovative solutions for customers, helps keep the sales team productive, and ultimately drive growth. What They Wish They Knew Although now in senior positions, we asked the panel to reflect on some of the key learnings they wish they’d known at the start of this journey, both working in the tech space and becoming a leader. Advice varied from the personal to the practical with a strong emphasis on driving visibility of the impact of your work. Get experience across the technology stack Technology is so broad, you need to make sure you have done all roles or at least the main ones, Sales, Marketing, Development and Product. Having a good understanding of all the main areas of the business early would have helped me understand and penetrate the market more effectively. I would have also understood the reasons why and challenged my team in areas I did doubt in my gut but accepted as they were the experts. I also wouldn’t have made so many mistakes. Lucky for me, I never made a mistake twice, but knowing what I know now, makes me wonder where the businesses I worked for would be. Petra: Failing is part of learning I love this quote by Thomas Edison, “I failed my way to success”. I used to think I was a cursed child when it came to conducting Conversion Rate Optimisation (CRO) A/B tests. Every test I ran, the results would be negative even when the test hypothesis seemed to be a definite winner. Very quickly, I realised that the lessons we learnt from each failed test gave us insights to know the behaviours of our end users more. I preach this to my colleagues when they run tests now. Failing allows us to reiterate and test again; like a drug, it becomes addictive as we try to figure what doesn’t work and what works. Enjoy the journey of growth; it’s exhilarating. Adelaine: Be Visible Something I wish I knew earlier was to be more visible. It’s not just the work, make sure the right people know you are doing it. This is a common misconception for most females that working hard alone will get them where they want to be. That is needed but with the right visibility and exposure along the way. I would also suggest being strategic in ensuring you are working on the projects that have maximum impact on the business. Hollie: Master all levels of communication : I’d agree with Hollie on visibility, always take the opportunity to be visible across the company, take on special projects, speaking opportunities etc. Also, confidence is critical in your communications, and it is crucial to communicate with data and how your role and responsibilities align with revenue growth. Finally, the ability to cross-pollinate across departments is important, always be sharing your strategy and how it can impact their teams/departments. Sophie Slow down I would tell myself to slow down a little; that is, not to respond at the moment. I would give myself the permission to balance the passion and energy and pace with a moment of mindfulness and to enjoy the ride. I’d also find a good mentor to learn from, gain insights from business leaders and always be authentic. Michelle: Stopping the Divide The reasons for the underrepresentation of women in IT are complicated, but many of our panel believe awareness is a crucial factor, from school education, to workplace communication, even the way society still views the employment system. They had this advice to share: Raise awareness It’s all about awareness; awareness that being diverse as a business drives innovation and growth. I have never been the one to be a loud feminist, but I have always found myself in situations where I am a minority having worked in male-dominated industries all my life. Secretly I like it; I understand that females bring another perspective to the table and thankfully at Carsales most of the males think this way too. Businesses need to keep talking about it; society needs to keep talking about it. Social media has been incredible when it comes to strong dominant females owning a lot of the conversation across topics and issues; it has provided a great platform for anyone (male or female, short or tall, black or white) to have a voice. I think that this next generation will be fine and we will start to see the divide go. Petra: Address wider societal issues There is a societal shift — in many young families, both parents are in the workforce. It is vital that couples share responsibilities of child caring and have mutual support for their partner’s career progression. Adelaine: I attended a conference where Andrew Stevens, member of Male Champions of Change mentioned that we need to be accepting of changes that need to occur in a system which was originally designed by men to ‘play the game’; to disrupt this, we need to change the system to suit both genders and not teach women how to be more like men. This was a great takeaway for me. Start in the early stages It’s a complicated issue and multifaceted. It starts with a lack of pipeline in some areas at the start of careers with the time taken out later in careers. I’m interested in working with schools to attract girls into taking STEM subjects. We need to focus on attracting female talent, but then also retaining the talent. Hollie: Companies have a sense of responsibility for ensuring pay is fair across similar roles, it has to come from the top. Lastly, we (females) as individuals need to ensure we negotiate pay well on our behalf. Being well armed with market data helps with confidence to negotiate. Qualtrics and Hollie as part of a team of leaders from each Regional HQ is working with the Clayman Institute at Stanford University to learn from experts in the space. Don’t shy away from talking about pay It starts in education, we just don’t have enough females pursuing an IT/tech degree. Most of the females who are in tech leadership roles have fallen into the tech industry rather than seeking out tech organisations as a preferred industry for them to work in. I certainly fell into the tech industry, however now that I’m here, I would not have it any other way. I believe it is one of the most exciting and dynamic industries. In order to attract more females into this industry, we need to promote the success of females. I believe there may still be a pay gap between females and males in the IT/tech industry — not necessarily at Qualtrics due to our leveling system, but certainly in other tech organisations. Females need to negotiate pay right from the start, and organisations should look at a leveling system which allows people at the same levels be paid exactly the same. Sophie: Advice for Aspiring Leaders Based on the insights that emerged from these interviews, what can aspiring professionals do to advance towards a leadership role in technology? We suggest three things: ask yourself what you are really looking for, embrace change, seize opportunities and ask for support and mentorship both internally and externally. : There are all types of leadership. Individual contributors can be great leaders and technology specialists have just as much leadership impact as a people leader despite the two being quite different. What type do you envision for yourself? Do you see yourself steering a large group of people? Or do you feel you have more value as an individual contributor with leadership skills? Often there is a perception that the larger the pool of people you lead, the more important you are in the organisation but that’s not the case in the modern ways of leading. Leading is about influencing outcomes that you don’t necessarily control and being accountable for those that you do. Michelle : External mentors (outside of your organisation), are great to be used as a sounding board to your ideas and strategies, as they will come with a fresh perspective and won’t be caught up in the details. Sophie Also internal mentors, preferably from a different department, are great resources as they will internally promote your work, up and across the organisation, this will help with visibility and may be able to get you onto different and more visible projects. Alliances are key to being happy in the workplace, ultimately if people are happy they stay longer. Support is key, when people lobby for you on your behalf it can have a big positive and wide impact. Having alliances makes the world of difference. 5 Hacks for the Best Sleep Ever

About a hundred years ago, a French Nobel laureate philosopher was the toast of the English-speaking world: Henri-Louis Bergson. His thoughts reached, affected — and reflected — all corners of Parisian culture of that time, from the stream-of-consciousness novel to impressionist painting. He was a pithy fellow, once quipping that the duty of the philosopher is to make the implicit into the explicit — an emphasis on articulation that we aspire to ourselves. And as the wise often do, Bergson reevaluated the most fundamental of things — like time itself. For beyond being a great aphorist — his line that the duty of the philosopher is to make the implicit explicit is one of our favorites — he had a profound and unique understanding of the nature of time. He criticizes “clock time” as being tyrannical and imprecise. It might be useful, perhaps, for scientific research, he said, but not for living. Rather, a more precise notion of time is what is best left un-translated as he thought of time as dureé-réelle, which could be translated as, though you may clumsily translate it, as “duration.” “Instead of time being this thing on the wall or on the watch, time is your ongoing, fluid experience, your consciousness.” If we use Bergson’s lens to understand these things, we can then make the conclusion that management of tasks is actually management of time — which is actually management of consciousness. That is to say that when you’re trying to get people on the same schedule (or not), you’re actually talking about managing their consciousness, their experience of life. Which is really quite the thing, isn’t it? Saying No But revolting against the tyranny of clock time is not just for impressionist-era philosophers. It’s also for modern-day ultra-doers like Bob Pozen, who once simultaneously served as president of Fidelity Investments, taught a full course load at Harvard Business School, and penned articles for the Harvard Business Review. In one such piece, he contends that a bias toward valuing workers by the hours they put in — which studies have shown managers do — is exceptionally misguided. To Pozen, professionals aren’t valuable to a company for the hours that they put in — which engenders a culture of privileging “face time” — but for the “value they create through their knowledge.” And since the measure of quality is hours rather than result, Pozen says, managers distract their workers from what he says is the most critical question, “Am I currently using my time in the best possible way?” and so use their time inefficiently. Let’s expand his argument to a philosophical level: By privileging hours over results, we distract ourselves from asking if we’re using our minds in the best possible way, resulting in a culture that is only accidentally mindful, if at all. “Orienting our working lives around the hours we put in is a way of avoiding the responsibility of using our consciousness and our energy in the best possible way.” Orienting around the end product (and process) helps us be more rigorous with the way we align our experiences with our outcomes. One of the foundational steps, then, to working in a prosocial, commitment-oriented, mammalian way is to recognize that the people that we’re working with have also had long experiences with life — experiences that you haven’t had — that will yield insights that you can’t have. As Pozen suggests, a lot of guarding your time comes down to being able to say no and express priorities — which means that you need to have a culture that’s comfortable with open conversation and saying, No, actually, I can’t do that.
