What is your current position? In Hoken Tech, an Italian startup that I co-founded, I cover the role of CTO, Chief Technology Officer. That is the first-level manager and board member of a company whose primary responsibility is to monitor, evaluate, select and suggest to the board and CEO the technologies that can be applied to the products or services a company produces. In my case, all is focused about crypto and blockchain to use and develop service upon that, mainly on EOS blockchain. How long have you been working in tech? If we go back in time to when I was little, I loved taking apart and reassembling recorders and Walkmans; but it was with the Android operating system, in 2011, that I approached and dedicated my energies to understand and develop something of my own, what aroused my curiosity and not only was being able to be the god of that application, as when in some games you enter the "god mode" command. But only with my first tablet, a Samsung P7500, I maximized my skills and experimented with various things, even the famous custom ROMs with various features as well as the ability to change the intro when it starts (a tablet that I have still on my nightstand). What is your educational background? Moving on my academic and non-academic past, I attended an Italian business school with an address for programmers (mainly studying Visual Basic as a programming language), and then I aimed instead, at university, for a legal address as there were still no advanced tools and smartphones at that time, neither Android or the blockchain. And then studying on my own, other languages ​​and systems to program on Android, and as if that were not enough, in the same time and until today, I have studied the Japanese language for 11 years now! Have you ever had a mentor? If yes, we’d like to know more about it. In the digital world, some writers and influencers from the tech world have certainly been a help for me, and I can consider them as mentors (Napoleon Hill, Robert Kiyosaki, Marco Montemagno), but if we want to talk about real mentors who have guided me personally, I certainly cannot forget to mention Amelia Tomasicchio, director of "The Cryptonomist". With commitment and dedication, she has always guided me and taught me a lot of things that I use and put into practice on a daily basis, and I am infinitely grateful to her for giving me various opportunities and believing in my abilities. And, as I once reminded her, she is a “Lighthouse for all but a mirage for some,” and for me is my lighthouse. What was the best piece of advice you got over the course of your career? One of the tips certainly concerns the one about failure, as especially with the development of applications and algorithms, errors and bugs can be really infinite. You have to check the code countless times, and despite everything when you press play on the console, there will always be an unexpected error that you did not calculate or a problem on the graphical interface that does not work properly. In these cases, I remember a piece of advice that reads "fail again, fail better.” In this case, we are talking about a failure or a small defeat that makes us fall, but once we get up, we will avoid making the same mistake. After solving it, there will be fewer obstacles until we complete our project and we have an almost perfect product. Another piece of advice that I always keep in mind is the one that Steve Jobs left us, namely the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!); in fact, this allows you to achieve something in the simplest way and without having to complicate your life. When I have to create something or experiment with a new thing, I always see the various options available, as a program, application, or other; there are 2 ways to be done, one is the difficult way starting from zero and building everything yourself, the other is taking advantage of the various pieces of codes or something like that to then assemble a new product but made in a faster and more efficient way. How relevant was self-learning to where you are today? Nobody doubts the power of courses and specializations of various kinds, but there are things that can only be learned by browsing around and experimenting; it is difficult for you to find a course dedicated only to how to import the APIs of a crypto aggregator into a spreadsheet, you can only learn from some guides or videos you find on the net, certainly not in a specialized book. So sometimes the best information is learned just by learning on your own and reading and seeing online guides rather than from super expensive courses at times. Knowing what you do now, where do you think one should start learning if they want to work in your position one day? The task of a CTO is certainly to put into practice highly technological and advanced solutions, both to simplify and speed up processes and also to produce new goods and services. Only with technological progress and the creation of new products and services can we manage to stay on the market and not fail. But it is equally true that if one does not update himself, does not document himself, and does not test the various solutions, he will hardly be able to find the ideal solution to integrate into his company. To do so, you need a lot of contamination and a news feed and channels as varied as possible - from games to art, from sports to geology, including feeds from different countries, in my case Italy, America, Switzerland, Korea, Japan, and China. There are countries that are certainly ahead of others and seeing how they do it can give you interesting ideas or introduce products that you did not think existed. What is the work-related achievement you’re the most proud of? I am not a person attached to money, so there will be no goals related to them, while instead of important goals are achieved when you create something unique and never done before. Sure, having a good foundation helps, but it doesn't mean that if you don't have an engineering degree or something. It doesn't mean you can't be a CTO. You need a lot of dedication, curiosity, and brains because, with these qualities, you reach goals that nobody teaches you. In the crypto and blockchain sector, where there are no right or wrong courses or paths, we are in the midst of experimentation. Once achieved a good personal level, you can enter the job market with your experience and sector that has deepened. For example, in the development of smart contracts or in communication at different levels such as marketing, journalism and so on, most of the people who write articles on crypto and blockchain, are not real journalists, but they write about these topics because they have experienced them firsthand and are able to tell them better than a journalist himself. On a less serious note: What do you listen to while working? Getting a Job in Tech: The CTO Experience

So let’s start! Tell us a bit about yourself. For example, name, profession, and personal interests. Ciao, I’m Alfred from Italy, a senior Android developer with several apps and during the pandemic, I set the goal to create and publish an android game every day of my quarantine, which led me to develop and publish more than 50 android games. I’m a blockchain specialist, down in the rabbit hole from 2011 with my little Bitcoin full node, and  I choose to share my knowledge with others. My latest top story was about a great team, Equilibrium, a project that develop on the EOS blockchain and other blockchains, and in that article, the focus was a guide on how to make free transactions on the Polkadot blockchain. If not, what do you usually write about? My main goal, as I said before, is to share my knowledge in particular on blockchain and crypto themes, cause we can not always find good articles or guides about blockchain and crypto. Often I make guides for airdrops so people can discover a new token and let them sell or whatever they want, and this is useful especially for people who have economic difficulties so they can get something for free. Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) The first thing that I use are data about a topic and merge all the data in something that can be easily understandable for people. Then it’s time to make some screens to show the process, like in a guide or tutorial, the different steps to do for getting a token or a crypto, how to set up a crypto wallet, and so on. After the article is ready I check for mistakes and finally I search for an image, usually from Pixabay, to modify with other things and text sometimes. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? Writing articles can be easy but hides a potential risk on the readers’ side. In fact, if an article is too short, you can’t be professional and give the right information but if is it too long it becomes boring to read and most people will stop reading after a while. Another “issue“ or concern is about the topic itself. Some people prefer to write behind the news but I prefer, mostly, to write guides, tutorials, and something not already done, presenting new content that is useful for all. What is the next thing you hope to achieve in your career? As a freelance and news reporter writer, a big goal is to become an editor in chief in some tech journal. I am truly inspired by my mentor Amelia Tomasicchio. As a book writer one goal I have is to sell at least 40K copies of my books (did you know that I have written 68 books?). Wow, that’s admirable. Now, something more casual: What is your guilty pleasure of choice? Not having bought more crypto. Do you have a non-tech-related hobby? If yes, what is it? Of course, one of my passions is Japan and its culture. Meet the Writer: Alfred, Blockchain Specialist, Developed and Published 50+ Android Games

I remote chat this afternoon with Joost Boer , a Dutch entrepreneur, company builder and product strategist who has extensive international experience gained through living in 5 different countries in Asia-Pacific over the past decade. He describes himself as having a beginner's mindset, happiest when creating something, a voracious reader. He is currently based in the Netherlands. Hello Joost! It’s been several months since we saw each other on the beautiful Island of the Gods. What are you up to these days? Hi Rachel, it indeed has been a while! With the pandemic I figured it would be wise to depart beautiful Bali and head back to the motherland, which in my case is the Netherlands. I arrived here last March and am pretty content down here. Friends, family, Spring... just a few factors that make me really enjoy my time here! At the moment I’m working hard with my team on adjusting BigDish, a restaurant reservation app, to a Covid-19 and post-Covid world. As you can imagine, just as the restaurant industry as whole  - us in restaurant tech really had to scramble. Adjust quickly, or perish! Those are the options. Besides that I kicked off a couple of new projects, one of which is , a content platform helping out budding entrepreneurs in the Netherlands. Start24 Sounds like you are working on re-inventing yourself and your business. You could say that indeed! I think as both individuals and companies you have to determine, am I going to turn this pandemic into dead-time, or into alive-time (to borrow from Robert Greene)? You can either mope and complain and decide to wait this one out, or you’re looking at this crisis and think, where are the opportunities? How can I add value? Looking at some of the behemoths in the restaurant reservation industry, they’ve basically said: Screw this, let’s see where things are next year. Whilst for instance, a smaller player like Nick Kokonas’ Tock, put together a take-away service in 6 days; and we at Big Dish put together a simple delivery service in a couple of weeks. For me personally, I thought I can use my spare time to become really good at Fortnite or burn through Netflix’s entire catalogue, or I can get some passion projects going. How did you manage to put the delivery service together? We simplified things drastically. We hammered down the scope and eased our ambitions just to get something out there. As we speak, we’re working on a revamped version of this, one that has some pretty interesting stuff that you wouldn’t find in any of the major delivery companies. I’m looking forward to know more about it. It has been, what, 4.5 or 5 years taking BigDish from 🚀 launch to IPO? It was about 4 years. In hindsight perhaps a little too early. Doing an IPO is a lot of work, and it’s very distracting. I mean I’m happy that we’re a public company now, but I’m also stoked that I moved away from my role as CEO and am now CPO, which is a lot less demanding. Over time, my personal interest has started gravitating towards business models that don’t require millions in capital but instead can be profitable from Day 1. Dealing with investors takes a lot of time, as does doing IPO, it is a distraction - all these things take away from actually working on your business, whether its in Sales, Marketing or Product Development. As a founder, you have to really determine if you want to get involved with this. I think it’s every young startup founder’s dream to ring the bell to launch their IPO, and you did it in a mere 4 years, that is a great achievement! I think that depends. Ask the guys from Basecamp and they’d certainly never want to do an IPO. 😉 The thing is, TechCrunch, and similar outlets are really biased towards reporting about companies raising funds, doing IPOs etc. Perhaps this gives a bit of a skewed image that this is the only way to get a company going - I know it skewed my perception, at least. I know you did a personal pivot - a role change - after your IPO. From CEO I turned CPO. For me this allowed me to focus on the things I really enjoyed. Which ultimately is really critical if you’re a founder. If you’re involved for too long with things that don’t truly energise you, you’ll burn out. So you made a pivot in your job scope as well as your location? That’s right, as CPO I became location-independent. I always wanted to experience Bali for a prolonged timeframe so I headed there and stayed there for about a year, learning about spirituality and opening your chakras and what not 😉. Just kidding, although I dabbled a bit in Yoga and breathing exercises, I after a year could still not tell you what a chakra really is and instead was there to mainly enjoy the weather, the beach, meet interesting people and experience the local culture. The nomadic life is really in vogue, and I’m happy I experienced it, but I would not want to live that life year after year. A stable home base is really helpful for your peace of mind - that applied to me at least! Yes, Bali really provides a great escape. For me as well, I was there for a couple of weeks every few months, looking for interesting projects to invest in from the digital nomad scene. What else was interesting for you in Bali? What makes Bali great is that it probably offers the best value-for-money experience you can find... which is why so many expats flock to it. The food is great, the Island is packed with beautiful sights, there are beaches, mountains, volcanos. The internet has gotten a lot faster over the years too, and there are heaps of co-working spaces where you can meet with like-minded folks. I think what you said earlier about pivoting your role before you burn out will resonate with a lot of folks in tech startups. I think in life it’s good to play to our strengths and interests. Identify those things towards which you have some kind of natural aptitude, some affinity with, and what is valued in the market. Stick to those things, go deep with them, and over the years keep on learning new things that can fit within these parameters. Over time you’ll have a T-shaped knowledge set at your disposal: a width of different subjects, combined with the necessary depth to add value in them. If on the other hand you keep on doing things that really just don’t fit your interests, then things get a bit akin to trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. You might get it in over time, but only through brute force and breaking something. Obviously we all sometimes have to do things that we are not good at or have much of an interest in. But the point is to not have these things become the lionshare of your days. Yes, I agree. I’m a believer in slaving at the start to get those 10,000 hours in, or work 16 hour days at early startup stages, but this can only go on for a few months, not more. I’ll usually sum this up as ‘Know Your Limits’, to the younger startup founders I chat with. Is this also why you are building Start24? The idea for Start24 is to really have founders in the Netherlands learn from my (and my partner’s) mistakes - of which we have made plenty. You can think here about matters such as selecting the right legal structure for your venture, or how to select the right web hosting or a business bank account. But we also deal with “softer” things like knowing your limits, and understanding that your body and brain isn’t a machine. How often does that brilliant business insight come to you at the 16th hour of the day? That’s why we’ll be allocating a great deal of content to subjects such as creating a morning routine, regulating your dopamine production and sleep. The latter especially is a fascinating subject about which many people - myself included, up until a year ago - really don’t know anything of substance at all. Which is crazy considering we all spend - or should spend - about a third of our lives sleeping. The old cliché that building a company is a marathon, not a sprint, really is true. Those that pace themselves properly will have a better shot at making it - or at least keeping themselves healthy in the process. I see. The word ‘crisis’, in Japanese has the kanjis ‘danger’ and ‘opportunity’ in them. I find that pretty interesting. When Malcolm X went to jail, he read so much he needed eye glasses by the end of his sentence. But he sure made the most of his time, being in a pretty horrendous situation. He focused on that which was within his control. As a founder, I try to keep this in mind, every single day. Even though this pandemic is a messed up thing, I’m in great spirits as I focus on that which is within my control and block out the rest. Picture this. Your kid comes up to you and says "Mummy/Daddy, I wanna be a YouTube star! Can you post a video of me on YouTube, pleeeeeeease?". What do you say? Do you oblige, refuse, explain why you don't think it's a good idea, or why maybe you think it is a good idea but that in all honesty you just can't be bothered doing it right there and then? I've faced this exact dilemma and it's not a unique one. My daughter is the exact age as Ryan. My friends that have kids my daughter's age have been asked this same question by their kids too. A few of them gave in and filmed adorable but potato quality videos of their kid playing video games and uploaded it to YouTube. My issue isn't the quality. Obviously. The issue is that it is friggin creepy. Filming your rugrat, uploading said rugrat to the Web for the entire world to see and turning your new-found hobby into a multi-million dollar enterprise, amassing tens of billions of views, millions of subscribers, selling thousands of toys, getting into legal battles (Ryan Toys Review)...all with your kid, being the mascot of your gargantuan new enterprise forever and into DIGITAL INFINITY. That's weird bro. Knowingly or not you've just nullified any potential right to privacy that your kid had. I'm not pretending I'm some kind of moral arbiter. As a parent we all make mistakes and I am certainly far from perfect. Just ask my wife. This thing just strikes me as one of those situations that's a really bad idea. And it might not be apparent from the start to the parents. Or anyone else, but I think in due course we'll all be scratching our chins and wondering why we ever thought it was a good idea. So as I was saying; My daughter asked me directly if she was allowed to make a video of herself on her tablet and upload it to YouTube because, well, her friend had a channel and she wanted to as well. Monkey see monkey do. started This was followed up by me asking her a couple of weeks later what she wanted to do when she grew up and the response was to be a YouTube star! I explained to my daughter that I didn't think it was a good idea because anything that you upload to YouTube can be seen by anyone in the world, it can be saved, downloaded and distributed and for a little kid that might be dangerous because there a naughty people out there, naughty people have access to YouTube too. She understood. That was a couple of years ago. She's a little bit older now and the discussion has come up again. She's a little older but a lot smarter and so now the conversation has changed to how she could potentially upload videos to the Internet while being safe. We've thrown around some ideas and its a work in progress. The point being is that if I don't need to cite facts from FBI.gov or statistics about a global pedophile and child pornography networks to my eight-year-old when discussing the potential downside in uploading personal and private information online and she Why don't the parents of these kids get it? gets it. Or am I just naive and they do get it but don't care because y'know money? I honestly don't know. A bigger question: What is YouTube doing about it? What are the global content giants doing about children and kid-content on their networks? Have they thought about it? Is it just going to be one of those 'costs of doing business' situations in a few years? Because I suppose eventually kids like Ryan might grow up and decide they're not too happy that their parents uploaded their entire lives for the world to see.
