The little-known company powering knowledge entrepreneurs When discussing the biggest passion economy platforms, a few names are frequently mentioned: Shopify, Patreon, Teachable, and Cameo, among others. But there are a few giants that are under-the-radar but have silently grown into behemoths. One of them is . Founded in 2010, the Irvine, CA-based online course platform is one of the most established companies in the passion economy, aiding people that are looking to package and sell their knowledge. It calls its customers “knowledge entrepreneurs”—individuals who have an area of expertise that can be offered scalably and monetized online through knowledge products. Kajabi In online reviews, it has been referred to as “the Cadillac of online course platforms,” given its all-in-one platform functionality and premium price points of $149, $199, and $399 per month, versus competitors priced around $49 to $99 per month. The platform has reached impressive scale: Since its founding 10 years ago, Kajabi—which is bootstrapped—has empowered over 50,000 users in 120 countries to serve 60 million students and make over $1.5 billion in sales. (To put that into perspective, Patreon, which was founded in 2013, has raised $255 million to-date and just in total payouts to creators). surpassed $2 billion Kajabi is on pace to reach a $1 billion annualized GMV—that’s $1 billion paid out to creators annually! Given Kajabi’s decade-plus experience supporting online micro-entrepreneurs, I sat down with Jeremy Saenz, the Chief Product Officer of Kajabi, to learn more about the platform, who their customers are, and his predictions on the future of the passion economy. Interview with Jeremy Saenz, CPO of Kajabi How did Kajabi get started? In 2009, our founder was building a children's outdoor toy that would connect to a hose and spray water in different ways. He got a lot of neighbors’ attention for this toy and wondered, “Maybe this is something I could turn into a business.” At that time, the options for selling things online were less developed. Kenny wanted to be able to teach people how to actually build this product themselves, and couldn’t find any way to do it. Kenny Rueter He was a web developer himself, but found that it was really difficult to string together all the different technologies to create an online storefront, take payments, and serve videos. He talked to more people doing similar things online and found the opportunity to build a platform for people who are building large audiences that wanted to learn something. What functionalities does Kajabi offer to users? We split the platform into 3 core jobs to be done. We want all of our customers to be able to build a business, manage a business, and grow their business. For (1), we make all of the online business-building tools, like website creation, digital products, online courses, digital downloads, and community tools. For (2), managing a business, we offer a CRM database and analytics. For (3), the growth side of the business, we provide the marketing toolset to grow your business, like sales funnel builders, landing pages, and email marketing tools, all hosted inside of Kajabi. All of these things are intertwined and connected together so that customers have one destination when it comes to building an online business. The Kajabi platform includes all of the following features. Its tagline: “Why pay more for 10 separate tools when you can do the job better with one?” How has the company evolved since its founding? The first iteration of the platform hosted video content and did a little bit of funnel conversion. Then, we worked with some of the bigger knowledge entrepreneurs who were selling video courses, like tennis lessons, marketing training, and coaching and consulting. Kajabi helped them run their launches and to sell online. That's how we got the first roughly 2,000 customers. Between 2010-2014, Kajabi was very much a lifestyle business and was growing well, but wasn’t on a hockey stick path. In 2014, we decided to completely rebuild the platform from the ground up. We decided we were going to do a complete rewrite because the old platform was just insufficient. We also felt like we had learned a lot more about the online creator industry and had a better sense of where it was headed. And so in 2015, we launched what Kajabi is today: an all-in-one platform for knowledge entrepreneurs who want to build a business out of their knowledge. There was a turning point in 2017 where we decided this was not a lifestyle business anymore, and we started to build and invest for scale and for growth. Fast forward to 2020, with COVID, and we’ve seen tremendous growth, not only in people subscribing to the platform, but also their level of success on the platform. What is Kajabi’s traction today? In the next couple of months or so, our customers are going to be on pace to earn one billion dollars per year through the platform (GMV). We’re growing like crazy, and we're seeing so many more stories of our customers transforming their lives by building businesses by leveraging what they know. In terms of our largest customers, we have multiple people who are making tens of millions of dollars each year on the platform. Our growth rate has always been healthy, but COVID has definitely accelerated it. Initially, we were worried that folks were going to panic buy software to build businesses online because they're desperate for another source of income. What we didn't anticipate is that their desperation to make something work, actually works in their favor as an entrepreneur—they’re going to find an opportunity and make it work. So we haven't seen any dip in activation or time to first dollar [the time between someone signing up for Kajabi and making their first dollar on the platform]. And a lot of the qualitative feedback we get from customers is along the lines of: “This was something I’d been wanting to do for a while, and COVID helped solidify my decision to jump in and get started.’” This period of time has catalyzed a lot of entrepreneurship. Describe your internal concepts of knowledge entrepreneurs and knowledge products. When we first started, we went after all entrepreneurs and online businesses in general, but realized that it was way too broad of a category to compete in. So we wanted to focus on knowledge because that was fundamentally what our customers were doing: they're taking what they know and turning it into a business, whether that’s through video training, podcasts, blogs, online courses, or digital downloads. The “knowledge” part is obvious; we saw the trend that people realized there’s value in what they know and that they could turn it into products. Then we have the “entrepreneur” part. We have issues with the term “creators,” because we're not just necessarily looking for people who just want to create something. There's a lot of platforms going after content creation. We specifically choose to play in the space of entrepreneurship. One of my favorite quotes is from Jean-Baptiste Say, a French economist who first coined the word “entrepreneur” in 1800: “The entrepreneur shifts economic resources out of an area of lower and into an area of higher productivity and greater yield.” That's exactly what we support: we see knowledge as something that one may already be utilizing, then shifting to an entrepreneurial mindset. It could be somebody who's already teaching a subject locally, or maybe they were flying 40 weeks out of the year offering seminars across the world, and they can get more leverage by offering it online. How does Kajabi think about building vertically vs. horizontally for creators? We think our customers are always growing. They have softer edges than the vertically-focused platforms imply. A lot of our customers would have problems with vertically-focused platforms because those platforms typically align to their own brand rather than highlighting the customer's brand. We are a horizontal platform by design: entrepreneurs are coming in and serving all sorts of different niches. We’re not prescriptive on one magic formula of how to succeed. It’s all dependent on what the customer is charging and what value they’re offering. There’s not a single checklist for how customers can be successful. We need to give them a set of flexible tools and make resources available for them to understand where the opportunity is in the market and how they can capitalize on it. We are starting to see a lot more competition and new platforms pop up, especially vertically-focused ones offering a particular type of knowledge product. For instance, email newsletter platforms: I can easily see those companies cannibalize each other, trying to compete for more and more market share in that specific vertical. A knowledge entrepreneur also wants to evolve over time as their audience matures and their needs change. Maybe somebody who's offering a newsletter today chooses to offer an online course or community tomorrow. That’s what we see happening among our customer base. Who is the end customer and what are they motivated by? The best knowledge entrepreneurs focus on addressing the end goal that the user wants to attain. That might be health and fitness, which has always been a huge category in transformation, or career coaching on how to nail an interview. Knowledge entrepreneurs are tapping into this in different ways: some people are doing evergreen courses. There’s group coaching, where people check in with each other and hold each other accountable. If you ask me about any vertical, I'll probably be able to pull out a customer. We have a customer who is a hairstylist and her network of other hairstylists really wanted to learn how to up their Instagram game. So she published a course and made $17,000 in a single weekend. And now she's made multiple millions of dollars on Kajabi and has expanded her course. She has an audience of people who trust her on how to run a hair salon and how to build an Instagram following and generate leads. She is so hyper-focused on making sure her customers are successful. It's a trickle-down of we empower our customers to empower their customers. What are some new formats that we’ll see in the coming years from knowledge entrepreneurs? There’s another term we use internally: knowledge product. For us, knowledge products are an expression of your knowledge, and it's packaged in a certain way. It's online courses, digital downloads, Cameo video messages, podcasts, or newsletters. Some of these products are free; they’re front doors to your business. Other products are very high-priced, like 1:1 coaching sessions. Formats change all the time. We're dedicated to discovering what those new formats are and how to introduce them to our customers’ ecosystem. We started with video courses, but there are so many more mediums that have emerged, that are cycling in and out and being invented. There have been some trends that we are on top of, but our customers are innovators too. We keep an eye on our early adopters and what they’re offering, even in a hacky way—we watch that really closely. Right now, one of the exciting formats is live video. Our customers are already doing live video over Zoom. It's one of the easiest ways to make content right now. So we ask ourselves, do we need more accessible video editors, or do we just need more accessible ways to record a video? We need to make sure that our platform can evolve and be flexible so that our customers can be relevant and competitive. What are examples of knowledge entrepreneurs who aren’t necessarily creating content themselves? We’re seeing entrepreneurs who are able to curate the right content or point people to the right place. We'll specifically see curators who find prominent experts in a particular industry and bring them in on a venture. People are doing revenue share models inside of Kajabi, where perhaps they're creating a marketplace for a very specific vertical, and they're bringing in experts and teaching them how to create content. We have a customer, , who is making multiple millions of dollars a year doing live virtual summits for the online knitting community. And they got all these people in the knitting community to participate in these virtual summits, and they're just selling like hotcakes. Knit Stars What advice would you offer to aspiring knowledge entrepreneurs who are looking to get started? I always ask people to start with: what does success look like for you? And then, start formulating who your audience is even before building your product. Don’t just create a course and hope that people will pay for it. Instead, understand the customer and their problems and needs. This goes not just for knowledge entrepreneurs, it goes for all entrepreneurs. We're positioning our Customer Success team to help consult on goals and inform next steps. Kajabi University Do you have any predictions for the future of the passion economy? Firstly, people will increasingly identify with and trust other people rather than starting with a specific type of product or impersonal brand. We're putting the individual’s brand and their company’s brand forward. We compare Shopify and Etsy—there’s a difference in how overwhelming it is to go to somebody's Shopify store that you trust, vs. going to Etsy and seeing a million things and not being sure which ones are actually trustworthy. Etsy’s brand is very customer-facing, and subsumes all of the individual merchants’ brands, whereas the Shopify brand is invisible to the end consumer. The moment that the end customer no longer resonates with Etsy as a brand, they'll stop going and shopping with any of their merchants. We’d much rather be Shopify than Etsy. Secondly, specific content formats will cannibalize each other, and they will come in and out of relevance. What is scalable is empowering individuals to build their business, to carve out a niche, and build their audience, rather than focusing on a specific content medium. The boss who didn't pick you? The system that holds people back? Bad luck or lousy timing? If you said yes to any of those, you likely lean external on the locus scale. And that orientation may secretly sabotage your success. There's a psychological concept known as locus of control. Some people view themselves as controlling life events — internal locus. Others see outside forces directing their destiny — external locus. Corporate culture and education breed external thinkers. We absorb ideas like... The company limits advancement. I'll never get ahead here. The economy tanks my savings no matter what I do. I lost my job because of ageism/sexism/racism/cronyism/nepotism. The system is rigged against people like me. An external locus is learned helplessness on steroids. It assumes you lack agency over your outcomes. The keys to the kingdom reside outside the castle walls. You cannot breach them. Meanwhile, internals interpret setbacks differently: I haven't demonstrated I'm promotion-worthy yet. I should diversify my investments more to hedge against risk. My skills aren't competitive anymore. Time to update them. The system may be biased, but I can still influence my own experience. See the difference? Internals believe they largely control what happens TO them, while externals see things happening AT them. This orientation predicts success and well-being. Internals end up healthier, wealthier, and more satisfied. They resist victim narratives, take responsibility for career growth, and persist despite obstacles. What others call luck they call the inevitable output of preparation meeting opportunity. Internals rise faster. They handle setbacks with resilience rather than resentment or resignation. Hungry to keep bettering their best. They own their destinations even when the journey depends partly on outside forces. They influence context through quality connections. Master timing and tribes. This lifeline forever pulls them forward, fate and fortune ultimately submitting to internal gravity. The external looks at the internal's progress with confusion. "How does she keep advancing despite the headwinds?" They don't recognize the mindset gap that keeps blowing doors open for one while barricading them for the other. So the internal lands the promotions. Lands the wealthy spouse. Lands more job offers and speaking gigs. Hits the targets the external calls impossible. The formula is simple: Internals bet on themselves. While externals wait for the world to give them a fair chance, internals get obsessed with self-growth. They level up skills, expand networks, and speak up when overlooked. In contrast, externals atrophy in bitterness and disbelief. Blame becomes the balm that temporarily soothes their powerlessness to control context. Occasionally, the internal orientation goes too far — the hubris of refusing to acknowledge any constraints beyond your control. But the sweet spot lives much closer to that extreme than the other. So if you catch yourself externalizing, course correct quickly. Trade in excuses for ownership. Set audacious goals immune to outside forces. Maybe the winds won't cooperate, but your mindset still controls the sails. Stop leaving your fate and fortune resting in foreign hands. Seize your locus and shift it internally. Orient yourself to play power, not the victim. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the game changes when you do. Question: 10 Seconds Will you let 10 seconds ruin your life? What if I trip walking up on stage? What if I mess up my words? What if they don't like what I have to say? We all have those voices in our heads filling us with doubt before we try something new. I call them the First Ten Seconds. They are the initial moments of discomfort, uncertainty, and fear we feel when facing a risk or challenge. And here is the key insight: Most people let those First Ten Seconds stop them from ever even trying. They talk themselves out of raising their hand for a promotion, starting a podcast, asking someone on a date, you name it. The First Ten Seconds lock them in place. But growth lives outside your comfort zone. It waits on the other side of those First Ten Seconds. So how do you push past the doubts and disbelief when you know something could significantly change your life if you just went for it? Here are three unconventional ideas: First, reframe what those First Ten Seconds mean. Recognize them as a sign you are headed in the right direction. Let those butterflies in your stomach be confirmation that whatever you are about to do matters. Next, don't think. Just start without overanalyzing. As Mark Twain once wrote, “You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” Stop reviewing worst-case scenarios and talking yourself out of it. Shut off your brain and start moving forward. Surprise yourself. Finally, fall in love with failure. Understand that failure is not really failing at all. It is learning, adjusting, and wisdom for whatever comes next. The most successful people fail more because they try more. So fall in love with failure, and you remove its power over you. The truth is those First Ten Seconds never totally go away. Even after years of public speaking, I still feel them. But now, I smile. I let them energize me rather than paralyze me. I hope these unconventional ideas help you push past your next First Ten Seconds to create the change and growth you have been putting off. Did something happen that led you to develop these patterns? What beliefs or assumptions fuel the paralysis? Once you have more clarity, make an action plan. How can you respond differently to defuse your triggers when they arise? What affirmations or mantras can you use to stay motivated? Who can you turn to for support? Small steps add up. Regaining momentum is a process of patient persistence and with some critical thought, compassion for yourself and commitment to moving forward, you can break through those paralysis triggers so they don’t freeze you in your tracks. I’m late. I know. I’m so late. Better Sheets celebrated 2 years on April 3rd, 2022. It’s now May. So what have I been doing? Just passing $100,000 in top-line revenue, selling Google Sheet Tutorials and Google Sheets. Yep, I generated $100k in revenue In 24 months selling Google Sheets tutorials, Google Sheets templates, Google Scripts, Google Sheets “software”, and Info Products on Google Sheets. But really what I was doing was launching a brand new Better Sheets site. A slick UI for members to see all the videos, find them by tags, by formula, and get all the available products in one list. Before this Better Sheets was spread out over a duct-taped site with Algolia, Loom, Outseta, Gumroad. Now I built a new site with Ruby on Rails and have everything in one place. Usually, you’ll see these posts with some extra promotion at the end. No worries there. You won’t be prompted to upvote on Product Hunt. I launched Better Sheets a couple of weeks ago and it already got #1 Product of the Day. on Product Hunt https://twitter.com/Kamphey/status/1519935911810977793 So no need to go there. I’ve packed this post with as much useful information as I could. If, after reading it, you still have questions, ask them. And I have a free version. So no pitch to you to add to my own revenue. I’m absolutely indebted to the marketplace Better Sheets is featured on: AppSumo Marketplace. I consider each sale of Better Sheets as revenue at the listed price. As I write this the price of Better Sheets is $69. For the first year+, it was $19 lifetime. Yes. Really. Lifetime for $19. Even though I make at most 95% of that, and most of the time 70% of that, I count the “top-line revenue” as the price it’s listed at. Which in the first year was $19, then $49, and right at this moment it’s $69. All Stripe payments take a 3% - ish cut. And even selling info products on Gumroad, will have a cut. Obviously less than Appsumo since Gumroad is a payment portal, not a marketplace where buyers are discovering me. Gumroad isn’t actively working for me. It’s very passive. But generally, Gumroad takes 5% (now that I’m over $10k lifetime revenue via Gumroad) But that’s not accurate in totality. I sell some $1 items and they charge 30 cents for each transaction, like Stripe. So I actually get 67 cents when I sell a $1 product. Just wanted to note that. Take Home Pay So just be warned, the take-home pay is much much lower. For those itching to know what the take-home pay is, here’s quick back-of-the-envelope math you can do. $100k, just cut out 30% to make the math easier. So $70k. Take out about $5k for development costs (more on that later). And $3k for marketing costs. Also, take out another 20% to 40% for taxes. We’re left with under $50,000 over two years. So roughly $25k a year. Breakdown the Revenue Here’s how that revenue came to be. 82% is from selling memberships to Better Sheets. Membership includes access to videos and sheets. Breaking down further roughly 2% => Monthly Membership 80% => Lifetime Memberships. 16% is from selling info products and software. These are templates and sheets and scripts that I sell for those who wish to only purchase individual products. For example OnlySheets, Better Letters, and a sheet of Twitter Templates. 2% is from selling Workshops and Consulting. Some folks have needed substantial scripts written for them or needed more hands-on help in a group setting. I’ve created 2 workshops and consulted with a few people. At times charging $49 for half an hour or $99 for an hour. And one of the workshops was $199. Which Platform Did You Get That Revenue? I mainly sell memberships through AppSumo. 96% of membership revenue has been through AppSumo. I also sell info products and software via AppSumo as well as Gumroad. The majority of info product and software sales have so far come via Gumroad itself. And some consulting has been paid for via PayPal while some via Gumroad. Here’s the percentage of Total Revenue per platform 85% - AppSumo 13% - Gumroad 1.5% - PayPal and Outseta What kind of paid marketing have you done in the past 2 years? AppSumo does a lot of the marketing and promotion on my behalf. Which brings meaning to their 30% cut. For them, I've created a that's gotten 34,000 downloads as of May 2022. And wrote a blog for them which drives some sales. free template package I’ve also spent $1k on newsletter ads in late 2020 and in early 2022 I started a TikTok channel, Paying an editor $360 for helping with videos. I also paid out another $504 to newsletter ads in 2022, so far. How much does Better Sheets cost to run? At this moment it costs less than $50 per month to run Better Sheets. is running on Heroku. I also pay for Loom yearly (roughly $8 per month).  I almost doubled the cost to add Sentry but ended up canceling the paid plan as I didn’t need it moving forward. If you love building and explaining, then you might be looking at Better Sheets as a model of what to do to monetize your knowledge or your “passion”. I don’t think you can replicate the success, just like I don’t think anyone can replicate anyone else’s success or failure. But I do think you can replicate the initial start. The initial process. I made 8 videos. I put 4 out for free and put 4 behind a paywall. You don’t have to choose Gumroad now. You have a choice of hundreds of options.  From No-Code to Low-Code, to Code. You can add a Stripe integration easily with stripe checkout and a couple of HTML sites with Ruby on Rails and Tailwind. Heck, it would look killer if you merely copy the code from an inspiration site like Disclaimer: my pricing section on Better Sheets homepage is from Landing Folio. LandingFolio.com In those initial videos, you don’t have to teach a structured course. Talk about your experience. Show what you do day to day. Show off the last thing you learned and implemented. Breakdown your own success story.  Show off a step-by-step process. Without commentary and without justification. Just show it. You’d be surprised how many people just want to look over your shoulder. And then from there, make sure to talk to users. Talk to customers. Talk to clients. Talk and listen. I knew I had about 20 to 30 video ideas when I started. But I made the grand gesture of saying “I’ll make 100 videos” I was nervous to start. But when customers asked questions it was like sweet sweet manna from heaven. Every question got a video response and that video was added to Better Sheets. Over time those sometimes didn’t make it into the Better Sheets catalog. In all, I have 177 videos now available to all members. But I have another 300+ which I’ve made for 1 member and sent to just them. I should probably go through those and find some that all members would benefit from. Jakob Greenfeld is doing this with his “Scraping the Web” course. Available on Gumroad right now. What can other IndieHackers do to help creators? Originally I called Better Sheets a nonlinear course. It’s both a good way to describe it and a bad way. If anyone sees the word “course” they will immediately think of a structured set of videos taking you from point A to point B. Even though I add the descriptor “non-linear” it just does not help describe what the set of videos is and allows a user to do. I think there are better ways to describe what Better Sheets is, does, and how it works. The new site I made is customized for Better Sheets but I think a non-linear course platform could be very good for creating more interesting new types of courses. I’ve already gotten interest in making a site for others who are currently on platforms like Teachable or Kajabi. I was excited to see @kenneth_cassel building Slip, but also disappointed to see it go the way of web3 and abandon slip altogether: https://twitter.com/KennethCassel/status/1470438097284390916 I think it’s outside the scope of a single indie hacker to be able to make a course platform that includes video hosting. The costs are still incredibly high for CDN and Data consumption on the level of Video. Heck YouTube is barely profitable, if at all. And it’s been around for 17 years. Do you think any Indiehacker wants to build for 17 years? Most of us can’t even focus for 12 months. I think though, using other platforms like YouTube/Vimeo/Loom for hosting provides a simple solution to that hosting problem. YouTube is a great platform to see video courses and distribute them, but there’s much more we can do around the video. For example: in Better Sheets new site I add not just “tags” or “keywords” but add all Formulas as a tag. So you can watch a video, see a new formula in google sheets you never knew about, and in one click see other videos featuring that formula. I also link directly to a google sheet many times. A link in the description is a great way to feature these, but I separate it out of the description. Knowing that most videos will have a sheet link. Course platforms are great and Info Product platforms are great. But it would be amazing to see the best of both worlds come together. I think Gumroad’s been great to a point. Their email workflow automation are cumbersome. Same with Mailchimp and ConvertKit. And indie hackers who focus on email automation to courses/info products could find a wide ocean of opportunity. For example, I want to send an automatic email to each person who bought 1 product and nothing else. But I have 20+ products on Gumroad. That would take me a week to select those paths, then write each email out specifically for each one. It’s a worthy project and I should do it. But I also know that each one would probably be seen around a dozen times in the next week or month. So it’s not high on my priority list. But if I had a system that could create those 20 with a single template. That’s worth $29/month or $99 a year. I would work on it for one afternoon. What is the Creator Economy? How would the world look if Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok were owned and operated by their users? What if these users also vote on issues such as data collection and content moderation? That is the imagined future of what the creator economy should be like. The creator economy attracted over $1.3 billion in funding in 2021. But who takes the big share of the money generated by these platforms? It is not the creators. The creator economy comprises over 50 million independent content creators and curators. It is also made up of community builders such as bloggers, social media influencers, videographers, and the finance and software tools designed to help these creators monetize and grow. Creators can make money through: Selling digital content Charging for courses Receiving money from fans via a donation platform Receiving subscriptions Engaging in affiliate marketing Receiving money from a fan club Creating or sharing sponsored content Sharing advertising revenue Receiving tips Featuring product placement Receiving one-off sales or donations Selling fan engagement Biggest Issue with the current content sharing platforms - Absence of Middle Class Towards the end of the 2000s, we witnessed the growth of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Medium, YouTube, iTunes, Instagram, and TikTok. Content creators were no longer at the mercy of production and marketing houses. Such creators could create content and share it easily. These platforms solved the distribution challenge for content creators, and they could now amass huge followings. However, there are limited avenues of direct monetization that these creatives can explore. YouTube was the only exception in the old days as it allowed creators to enjoy 55% of the ad revenue. Vine was a perfect example of a platform that failed to motivate its users. The short video-sharing app was acquired by Twitter in 2012 and attracted more than 200 million active users a month by 2015. Creators left the platform in droves when they realized that Vine didn’t have any infrastructure to support creators. Platforms like Patreon and Twitch introduced new monetization features allowing creators to benefit directly from their content. However, only the top creators bring in six-figure incomes. As seen on various platforms, the ‘middle-class’ is struggling. The top 1% of creators on OnlyFans get a third of the profits, while the ‘middle-class’ get less than $145 a month. Stages of Creator Economy The creator economy has undergone various revolutions. The following are some of the major stages: Stage 1: Foundational Media Platforms Social media platforms lay the foundations of the creator economy today. Through platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, and Medium, creators established big followings. These foundational platforms help content creators get discovered, and they also invest heavily in curation and recommendation algorithms. These platforms aggregated the creators and equipped them with various audience development tools. To help polish content, these platforms created multimedia editing tools. However, these foundational media platforms don’t always have the best interest of the creators at heart. Innovative creators diversify their presence on various platforms and cross-promote to ensure that they aren’t at the mercy of the platform owners. Such an approach ensures that creators don’t suffer much when the owners decide to change priorities, a platform loses its market share, or reduces some of the monetization features. Stage 2: Monetizing Influencer Reach The foundational media platforms allowed some creators to attract huge followings. At this point, companies realized they could use creators with huge followings to promote their brands. Some platforms, such as YouTube, started splitting ad revenue with the creators. On the other hand, some like Facebook and Twitter initially left the creators to decide how to monetize their content. The latter arrangement bred sponsored content and led to the creation of companies like Niche that brokered such deals. We can now see hundreds of companies in the form of influencer agencies, talent representation companies, and sponsorship marketplaces. The influencer market was worth $8 billion in 2021 and is expected to hit $15 billion by the end of 2022. Creators in this space work with brands that match their personal brands, so they don’t have to change their content to push corporate messages. It has become evident that some creators make their followers lose trust in them with every paid/sponsored post. These creators now have to find a way out, which brings us to stage 3. Stage 3: Creators as a Business We are at a level where creators are seen as businesses. Creators have now created setups where their fans follow them off-platform. These creators have multiple revenue streams beyond the standard ads on traditional social platforms. New companies have come up to help these creators create more money by selling products such as merchandise, premium content, ebooks, and newsletters. Companies also offer coaching, speaking engagements, consulting, and fan engagements. Content creators can focus more on serving their biggest fans rather than chasing high audience levels that may never convert. The creator economy is all about handing financial control to the content creators, where they reach out directly to their followers for funding. It presents an opportunity where these creators bypass traditional ways through which they made money through ads, placements, and sponsorships. Why have creators not have been in complete control of their careers? They had to represent brands. These creators also have to act in a certain way to maintain their incomes. Even with millions of followers and influence, creators have to bend or conform to the companies that fund them. They are not fully controlling their brand, personality, and image. Levels of Creator Economy Level 1: Hobbyists Creators at this level create content for fun or as a side hustle. More hobbyists are joining the race as technology makes it easier to create content. For instance, tools such as Anchor makes it easy for anyone to launch a podcast. Hobbyists either don’t have the resources or the time to invest in their craft. Such creators sometimes lack marketing or distribution channels and struggle to reach certain quality content or production value levels. Unfortunately, many creators at this level remain hobbyists and don’t earn a living off their content. Level 2: Full-Time creators These creators can support themselves with income from their creative works. You will often come across platforms that host these creators sharing their success stories. Full-time creators are steps ahead of hobbyists as they have sustainable cash flows. One of these creators’ significant challenges is managing a business’s ups and downs. Managing can take much of their time, making it hard to become productive. Marketing their work can also eat so much into their profits if they are not strategic. Level 3: Stars Creators at this level can form partnerships with various external brands such as record labels, media companies, and publishers. Maintaining relevance and fame are some of these brands’ biggest challenges. There are also possibilities of brand crises that may cost creators at this level their partnerships. Level 3 creators face an uphill task as they try to leverage their brands to become a business. Level 4: Moguls These creators have created businesses that are likely to evolve, stay in power, and even outlive the creators themselves. Beyonce Knowles once said that her great-grandchildren are already rich. Why? Her content creation level is at the mogul level. It is the most challenging level to maintain and the dream of many creators. Content Creation Tools Content creation has changed a lot in line with the development of relevant platforms and tools. In the past, video creation was in the hands of a few people who had expensive equipment. Publishing houses could only publish books, and it was also expensive. This changed with the introduction of the internet in the late 90s and the rise of platforms such as YouTube. YouTube allowed amateur video creators to upload videos, and they were no longer at the mercy of media houses. Low internet speed affected the usage of platforms such as YouTube in the past. However, the situation has changed, and tools have also been developed. The following are some of the most common tools powering the creator economy in the modern world. These creators can also code royalties on the smart contracts and earn recurring passive incomes whenever their NFT is traded. Monetize passion. What’s Next for Creators? We are at a point where becoming a professional creator is a career choice. Creators become professional creators when they love what they do and work hard. The burden of managing their day-to-day activities becomes heavy as these creators grow. Startups centered around empowering creators and still helping them do what they love will dominate the next stage of evolution in this space. Creators are now evolving to become founders. On top of creating, they have to learn product design, management, eCommerce, community management, data science, and entertainment. We are likely to see more solutions tailored for creators. Even though there are billions of dollars poured into the creator economy every year, it is not oversaturated as many hobbyists are looking for marketing channels. We need to see products tailored for different business needs such as marketing, operations, investing, copyright expertise, product launches, or even community-building. Today, investing in any product takes more than just learning about the product. Your prospects want a complete picture of what it means to get involved with your company. They want to know things like what do you value as a business? What is your buying process like? What does your customer service, support, and success experience look like? Even though they can get all these answers from your sales reps, they want to get authentic answers from people who have used your product before. No wonder by Demand Gen Report reveals that 97% of B2B buyers cite user-generated content as more credible than other types of content when making purchase decisions. this research Micheal Buzinski from Buzzworthy Integrated Marketing said this during of the Actionable Marketing Podcast, an episode “What strangers have to say about you and your company has more weight than what your mom says about you and your company. Two-thirds of all people will look for reviews, which are your main part of reputation management before making a decision to do business with a new company. It usually takes anywhere between two and seven reviews before they make up their mind.” His statements prove that peer insights are more valuable than anything your sales reps would tell your prospects. And customer testimonials are one of the peer insights you can use to make your prospects perceive you as the right company to work with. Using customer testimonials in your content provides social proof that your product works, increases conversion rates, and gets prospects to talk about your brand in dark social channels with their peers. In this post, you’re going to learn: - How to get quality customer testimonials, and - How to use them in different types of content to get qualified leads. How to get customer testimonials for your product Getting testimonials is hard. If it were easy, then testimonials would no longer be valuable to prospects when they are making purchase decisions. Here are the ways to collect testimonials that you can use to acquire and retain customers: #1 Ask for testimonials Even though some customers can love your product so much that they decide to give a testimonial without you asking, most of your happy customers will never do that, no matter how impressed they are with your product. So, you have to ask these customers to give a testimonial without sounding pushy. Some of the best ways to request customer testimonials include: Email outreach Email outreach is one of the fastest and most effective ways to get testimonials from your customers. So, if your product is making a positive impact in their lives, it’s only natural that they will praise it and talk about your company with their online friends. Search your blog or business name on social platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram to find what people are talking about you on social media. Type your blog or business name on the search bar of those platforms to see what your customers are saying about you. You may be surprised to learn the beautiful things said about your brand. #3 Create product profiles on various review sites If you sell a B2B product, your prospects’ top review sites when making purchase decisions include , , and other review sites listed . Trustradius Capterra G2 here Product profiles are the pages on review websites where prospects and users learn more about your product, read and leave reviews. When you fill out your product profiles on review sites, your existing customers may leave a review of your product there. You can use information from these reviews to write quality testimonials and put them on your website to acquire new users. You may also reach out to people who left reviews to interview them and create case studies or identify ways to improve your product experience. #4 Run an NPS Survey and use the data NPS survey stands for Net Promoter Score, a metric used to measure customer loyalty to a company. It measures customers’ perception of your product by asking this simple question: How likely is it that you will recommend (product X) to a friend or colleague? Respondents give a rating between 0 (not likely at all) and 10 (extremely likely). And depending on their response, they will fall within three categories: Promoters - These people respond with a score of 9 or 10. They are likely to recommend your product to their friends. Passives - These people respond with a score of 7 or 8. They are satisfied with your product but are not yet happy enough to recommend it to their friends. Detractors respond with a score of 0 to 6. They are unhappy customers who are unlikely to buy from you again. They may even discourage other people from buying your product. The Net Promoter Score is the difference between promoters and detractors. Running an NPS survey is one of the best ways to get quality customer testimonials. Identify promoters and ask them to fill out a customer testimonial survey. Promoters are customers who say they are likely to recommend your product to their friends. So, they are likely to give a testimonial when asked. Here are the steps to use the NPS survey to get customer testimonials: - Send the NPS survey to your customers. - Identify the promoters. - Ask the promoters for a customer testimonial. - Follow up with promoters who didn’t provide a testimonial. - Offer a reward for promoters who submit a testimonial. #5 Offer a free product in exchange for a testimonial Many businesses offer a free product in exchange for an honest testimonial. This is common with authors who send a free copy of their book to their biggest fans or other authors in exchange for a testimonial. In the B2B world, you can invite an influencer in your niche to try your product for free and share their experience with their followers. Your prospects will perceive your product as valuable when they read the influencer’s testimonial. #6 Automate requests for testimonials While testimonials play a crucial role in helping you acquire customers, you may not always have the time to devote to setting up and running a testimonial collection campaign. So, what if your customers could give authentic testimonials around the clock with minimal effort on your side? To automate the collection of testimonials, you’ll need to ensure the essential steps work without supervision. These steps include: - Having a place where customers can submit testimonials ( a form or landing page.) - And asking the customer to give the testimonial (An email, SMS, etc.) For your customers to write, and submit the testimonial without your help in an automated testimonial collection process, have a dedicated landing page or form on your website. Provide clear instructions on these pages or forms about what you’d like your buyers to do, including the questions they should answer and if at all there is a reward. There are many ways to put your testimonial requests on autopilot: 1. Use the after purchase email Add a link to your testimonial page, asking your customers to share their experience if you usually send a follow-up email to people who buy your product. 2. Apply drip campaigns Use email automation softwares like MailChimp to make a series of three to six emails, asking your customers for testimonials. 3.
