Cloud expertise is currently one of the most sought-after tech skills out there, and cloud jobs are some of the highest paying in the industry. But how does one break into this exciting field? A couple of years ago, I found myself stuck in a dead-end job and was itching to break into a career in the cloud, but I did not know how to. After discovering AWS, I came up with a plan: I was going to get all three associate-level certifications, which would make me a cloud developer in extreme demand, right? I just need to cram for a couple of tests. Easy peasy! So how did that plan pan out? (See my original blog post from 2017 about my certification journey ) here Certifications Are Controversial Certifications are a bit of a touchy subject in tech: some people swear by them, others think they are overrated. I kinda agree with both of those sentiments! Let me explain. If you think that a certification alone will make you an expert in a given topic, then you are in for a surprise. You will not gain expertise by passing a test. This attitude is what gives certification a bad rap. A growing number of so-called “certified experts” that seem to lack an understanding of the very topics they are certified in does not help. With that being said, certifications have some benefits, two of which are: They provide an easy-to-follow path for studying and self-learning: for complex topics like AWS services, one can be easily overwhelmed, but having a defined and structured list of topics to cover makes it much easier to learn While most technical hiring managers tend to be indifferent towards certifications, many recruiters and HR people like them, so having a certification could potentially improve your chances of being noticed and might help get your foot in the door Brief Overview of the AWS Certification Path As of 2020, AWS has multiple tracks for certification, as seen in the image below. AWS Certification Path as of 2020 - https://aws.amazon.com/certification/ Foundational: for those completely new to the cloud and seeking to get a general understanding. Avoid this track if you are more technically-minded Associate: this is where most people will start (and where I started). The Solutions Architect is a good one to start with Professional: recommended only after 2+ years experience, and I really encourage you to follow this recommendation Specialty: deep dives into specific topics that require lots of experience and knowledge (security, networking, etc.) For most technically-inclined people, I recommend starting with the associate-level certifications. How I Broke Into the Cloud Career As I mentioned before, a couple of years ago I decided that pursuing the three associate certifications from AWS would be all I need to break into a career in the cloud. After months of studying, I did manage to pass all three certifications and I started applying to jobs. Initial Failure I was getting called back, but my interviews were not going that great. While the knowledge I gained from all those certifications was helpful, it was not the only thing employers were looking for. In my pursuit of passing my AWS tests, I neglected other skills that were equally critical. One of the most critical skills I ignored at the time: knowing how to write quality code. It turns out that if you want to be a cloud professional, writing code is one of the most important skills that employers are looking for. My mistake: I leaned too heavily on my certifications. Turning Things Around After many failed interviews and after realizing what my areas of weaknesses were, I went to work on filling the gaps. For me, my Achilles’ heel was the coding challenges: I was doing great on most technical and behavioral aspects of my interviews, but I was bombing the code challenges. Only when I focused on my weaknesses and accepted that my AWS knowledge alone will not suffice, things started to turn for me. After devoting a considerable amount of time studying object-oriented programming and doing a lot of practice, I started interviewing more confidently and doing well on coding-related questions and challenges, which very quickly landed me what has been the most fulfilling and enjoyable career I’ve had so far. My cloud knowledge gained through studying for those certifications, in tandem with my coding skills, ended up being the winning ticket. Should You Pursue Certifications? Definitely! Shia LaBeouf thinks you should! If you are new to the cloud, or interested in jumpstarting your career, pursuing an AWS certification will be a great place to start. Just remember though: depending on your background, those certifications alone might not be enough. Suggested Path I highly recommend you start with the AWS Solutions Architect - Associate certification, and then possibly pursue the two other certifications afterward (Developer and SysOps Administrator). Unless you have a couple of years of experience in the cloud, do not pursue the professional-level certifications. But do not stop with the certification: understand that more than likely, you will need to supplement with additional skills and experience. Final Thoughts You Can Absolutely Do This If you have been thinking about transitioning into the cloud but have been looking for a sign, this is your sign! Demand for cloud professionals is only increasing. A global pandemic has caused more companies and workloads to move to the cloud, and increased the demand even further. MongoDB for node.js developers jumpstart

It’s no secret that social media is more important now than ever. Everyone is on at least one platform or another. With that being said, it’s a really smart decision to notice where the attention lies and use it to your advantage. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be writing a series of articles that go over solid strategies to capture and engage your audience on each of the individual platforms. This article will go over some of the principles that will apply to all of your social media efforts, so you may want to bookmark this or save it for future reference. Before we tackle social media, I really want to stress the importance of having a quality product. If your CD and your band are terrible, great marketing will only expose how terrible it really is. If your live show is slop, great marketing will only lead to more people talking about how bad your live show is. A garbage product is still a garbage product regardless of how much time you put into your marketing plans. With that being said, let’s get started. Social Media to be seen and discovered With so many people actively consuming opinions and stories via their social platforms, it’s a no brainer to think that you might be able reach new eyes and ears. There are so many quick and easy tactics to finding more views. Firstly, I want to briefly address Content is the only thing that matters in the Social Media game. If you aren’t producing content, there is nothing for your audience to find. This could be quick videos, pretty graphics, interesting status updates, etc. However, make sure you are striving for quality, not quantity. content. (We will cover Quality Content development in a later article.) Secondly, we need to make sure that we are looking to create an audience organically and on our own accord. We want people who are genuinely interested in what we have going on. 10 true followers who interact and buy your stuff is worth more than 1000 followers that ignore your content. Again, quality, not quantity. Let’s say that you are producing quality content. How do you expand your reach via Social Media? There are three main ways to get your content out in front of more people. #Hashtags, paid advertisements, and shares. #Hashtags I believe in the power of hashtags, but only if you understand how to use them. These little guys help us group content into certain areas of the internet. We can search for them and/or we can group ourselves in with them to be searched for. For instance, I use #drums quite a bit. I search for it often to find new things or to geek out with other drummers. I also include it in my posts so others who search for #drums will see my content. It really is quite simple. Take a few minutes to research the latest hashtag trends to see if you can relate what you do to a hashtag that is gaining a lot of attention. These trends are typically short lived so jump in quickly when you do and don’t hesitate to get into conversations with people also using that hashtag. On the flip side, don’t bother starting your own hashtags unless you have a huge following that will actually use it. I see too many bands trying to use their band name as a hashtag. This doesn’t typically work. It’s also a waste of characters when you could use more hashtags that already have peoples attention. Paid Advertisements Paid advertisements are all of the sponsored ads you’ve seen in your Social feeds. Believe it or not, these work. The biggest pitfall I’ve seen when using paid advertisements, is a lack of planning. Who is your target audience? What are their interests? What region do you want to target? This is great for touring bands and out of town shows. How long do you want the campaign to run for? What is your budget? What do you want your audience to do? Visit your webpage? Sign up for your email list? Download your cd? What kind of a content do you want to use to entice them to follow through with your call to action? Once you’ve thoroughly figured out your advertising plans, the only thing left to do is monitor results and make adjustments along the way. Shares By far the most important of them all. This is the word of mouth for social media. You want to create content that people want to share with their friends. People love to share things that move them in some way. They become brilliant walking billboards. I’m sure that you’ve been a walking billboard at one point or another. This is the ultimate goal for being seen and discovered. Speaking of sharing, don’t forget to mention your social media at your shows and events. Create some sort of reason for them to want to pull out their phones and follow you right away. A call to action right there from the stage. Remember that growing an audience takes time. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t see huge growth in the first couple of weeks. Your goal is to just get one more person to click the like button. Once you’ve figured out how to funnel your audience to your Social accounts, now it’s time to engage them. Engagement and Interaction The best part of Social Media is the interaction. Getting to know our fans helps us understand how to sell to them better. And more so, this helps them develop a relationship with us and our music so that they will want to buy our stuff before we are even selling it! I’ve come up with some guidelines to help get you started. Content Content is the ground on which Social Media is built on. This is every post, every picture, every tweet, etc. Without content, you have nothing for people to comment on or share. You need content. Lots of it. But let’s not stop there. You need interesting and enticing content. Something that makes people stop and give their precious attention to your post for just a few seconds. The longer you can hold their attention, the more you are on their mind, the more likely they are to comment or share. That’s the goal. Start thinking about daily posts. But don’t just post junk. This brings me to my next point. Be Interesting Being a musician, I see all of the Social Media updates for my friends in other bands. Unfortunately, that means I see a lot of really generic band posts. These are the calendar updates shared to your Social accounts from the Bandsintown app. The half thought out, last minute “Hey guys, I’m playing tonight… blah blah blah.” The daily Soundcloud links shared with no context to what or why it’s being posted. Keep your posts creative and interesting. Start thinking of fun stories to tell around your music, your rehearsals, your gigs, etc. Take fascinating pictures and video of the musical adventures only musicians get to go on. Be original and unique, much like you probably are in real life but let it be seen through Social Media. Be Human In the process of finding a polished product to give our audience, I’ve found that sometimes, we polish a little too much. We try to come up with perfect canned answers and responses to give our fans when they ask questions or start conversations with us but from watching the greatest performers in the world, I can tell you that being a true human pays off greatly. Your fans are your fans because of you. Not because of the phone you are likely using to read this article, not because of the computer you recorded your CD on and not because of the click track playing live in your ears to help your band stay tight. They are your fans because they like the original thoughts you’ve created for them. The lyrics and stories in your songs. The catchy melodies and dancy rhythms that drive your music. If they can connect and be moved by those things, you’ve sparked intrigue in their mind and now they want more. They want to know you more and to dig deeper into your stories and know why you do the things you do. Being human is probably one of the most endearing traits an artist can have. That sells more than any polished product ever will. Some things to remember If this is your first time digging in to Social Media and thinking about a real way to market your band or project, I’d imagine you might be a little overwhelmed. Luckily, this is a marathon, not a sprint. There’s plenty of time to practice and try things out. If something doesn’t work as expected, (and there are times that it won’t), take note, make some adjustments and try again. Maybe do a little research and check out what other bands are doing. If they have a super successful campaign, steal some ideas. Lastly, and before you start this big push to up your Social Media game, remember that to really be able to utilize these tools successfully, your music and your product still need to be your first priority. If you’re songs are terrible, you band is loose, your show sloppy, and CD nonexistent…then you have nothing to create content for. Again, if you have no content, you have nothing on Social Media. I think if we’re able to maintain and improve on the level of service and reliability of our network, we’ll be able to make Windscribers proud. We often have cat-and-mouse-like antics with those who attempt to censor their citizens. They will often try to find a way to block us which requires us to then find ways to circumvent their censorship. Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. Honestly, AI has been really helpful to our teams. We have adopted it to help teams do more in less time — it eases the burden/annoyance of repetitive and lower-priority tasks, giving everyone more time to work on engaging problems. As for the layoffs, we haven’t had to lay anyone off, which is a blessing. We know it really sucks being let go from a company, but at the same time, this market has allowed us to scoop up a ton of really high-level talent. We have been hiring like crazy, and are still hiring more. Come and apply! Share your biggest success so far and/or your biggest failure so far. We have a company filled with very smart people who all get along to work on problems that affect people directly (censorship, access to information, etc). The team is our biggest success. We also are close to having 69 million users, which is numerologically important to us because funny sex number. My dog didn’t poop in the office this week either. Really, it’s a string of one success after another. Biggest failure? Can’t remember, overshadowed by too much success (see previous sentence). Any words of wisdom you’d like to share with us? At a time when the world is increasing its interconnectivity, it is becoming harder and harder to safeguard one’s own privacy. The main word of “wisdom” (I’ll leave it to you to decide whether it is wise), is that everyone should pay close attention to their online privacy and protect it fiercely, as it is becoming a commodity for companies, governments, and various groups to exploit citizens, and profit off of them both monetarily and psychologically. Take your privacy seriously because no one else will. Other than that… never judge a group of people by the way their government acts. Fresh from being recognized as a Runner Up in HackerNoon's Startups of the Year 2023 competition, Drope.me and its founder and CEO, Dima Okhrimchuk, are gaining attention in the gaming industry. Here’s the interview with Dima to discuss Drope.me's approach to influencer marketing in gaming, the factors driving their growth, and his vision for the future of game discovery and promotion. https://hackernoon.com/startups/north-america/north-america-wilmington-ca-usa Tell us how your startup is changing the world. Hi all! My name is Dima Okhrimchuk, I am the founder and CEO of Drope.me. I’m thrilled to be here and tell more about the unique platform my team and I are building! is a game-changer in how games will be discovered and promoted in the near future. We have built the world’s first influencer marketing platform that allows both indie developers and large publishers to engage micro-influencers and their communities at scale and only pay for performance! Our vision is to be the next-gen discovery platform for traditional and UGC games, where influencers and gamers are rewarded for promoting and playing games. Drope.me Influencer marketing has played a bigger role among gaming companies in recent years. With new ATT ad policies, even data-focused mobile gaming companies are starting to tap into this channel. However, if you ever tried launching an influencer marketing campaign, you know how complex, unpredictable, and costly this process may be. The need is here, but no solution on the market would streamline the process of engaging hundreds of influencers simultaneously in pure performance marketing campaigns. There is one now! On the other hand, since we see significant potential in tapping into a huge pool of micro-influencers, we are also creating new revenue stream opportunities for those creators. In our first six months after launch, we paid out over $70K to micro-influencers, with some making thousands of dollars on Drope.me. We are helping small creators get the attention they deserve from gaming brands and get paid for their efforts. What sets you apart from the competition? Two things: a truly unique performance-based model and a focus on smaller content creators and their communities. I would call ourselves a three-sided marketplace since our goal is to help companies engage not just influencers but their communities, too. Although other platforms offer comparable services, none of them provide an opportunity to pay only for results. Since the official beta launch in June 2023, the platform has enabled over 250 gaming companies to grow their revenues and paid out over $70K to micro-influencers. Drope.me helps both indie game developers and large publishers engage thousands of micro-influencers and their communities and, unlike other platforms, only pay for completed actions. These could be influencer actions, such as “Stream and promote a game on Twitch,” “Create a TikTok video,” etc., or community actions like adding the game to the Steam Wishlist or purchasing the game. Also worth mentioning is that Drope.me not only helps micro-influencers earn money by streaming but also engages their audience through unique formats like , where followers can participate and win prizes. This level of support and engagement for streamers and their communities sets Drope.me apart as a platform that genuinely cares about its users. We don’t consider them only as a tool for brands’ campaigns. Our initial goal was to build an equally beneficial platform for influencers and brands. And Drope.me is entirely free for influencers, of course. Community Giveaways What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Our team has extensive experience in marketing games and esports. One of the crucial points, in my opinion, is that we are core gamers, and some of us are also streamers. This allows us to understand the industry and its challenges, which we aim to tackle through Drope.me. And I personally spent over 10 years working in corporate finance and tech. After that, I co-founded a CS:GO esports organization in 2020. Although the project was less scalable than we hoped, it led us to pivot toward influencer marketing. Witnessing the preference shift among celebrity streamers and pro gamers, we launched Drope.me to facilitate collaborations with gaming brands. I’ve been closely cooperating with both parts of our TA, developers, and influencers to know everything about their pains and preferences. As a result, we’ve built a truly beneficial platform for the gaming industry. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? I’d be building another startup :) At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? We consider several factors to evaluate the performance of our platform. Our North Star metric is GMV. We have been growing by 30% month over month. We are also looking into how much of that GMV has been generated by the returning customers since it indicates how satisfied they are with the platform and their results. We also pay attention to registering new influencers and the activity of those who have been with us for a while. We evaluate the number of companies they participate in simultaneously, the number of influencer actions they perform, and the percentage of their audience they bring to Drope.me. What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2024? We plan to expand to working with UGC games, including Roblox and UEFN, and an additional integration on Drope.me. We also see opportunities to streamline the processes of launching and running the campaigns by integrating AI. More on that a bit later. We are also looking for business partnership opportunities with talent and marketing agencies, for example. We have an ongoing referral program that creates mutually beneficial opportunities. recently developed Which trend(s) are you most excited about in 2024? Share your reasons. The rise of AI and UGC. Artificial intelligence is everywhere now, and it’s something that I’m excited but careful about, too. There’s no discussion about its great help in every industry possible, starting from medicine and ending in gaming. But at the same time, we still have lots of things to learn to use and manage properly. There are many confidentiality issues, and adding AI features to every digital product isn’t the best idea either. But I guess when the hype slows down a bit, we can decide how to implement this incredible technology in the best way possible. As for the UGC, it represents a dynamic shift towards player-driven content creation, fostering a more interactive and immersive gaming ecosystem. With UGC, players become creators, generating their content within games. This trend encourages creativity and community engagement and extends the longevity of games as players continuously produce new content. Additionally, UGC provides game developers with valuable insights into player preferences and behaviors, enabling them to tailor future updates and releases to suit their audience better. 2023 had been another crazy year, especially in tech, with layoffs and the Generative AI takeover! Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. That has been a tough year for the gaming industry as well. Macroeconomic risks and AI are definitely the factors influencing the landscape in the tech and gaming industries. However, I personally am more concerned with the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. I worry whether the Western powers will remain united in their efforts to support Ukraine and the democratic values of Ukrainians. Of course, this is personal since I am Ukrainian, and my family and friends are there. Still, if Ukraine loses, then this will be a major shift in the whole global security system that could lead to the escalation of war conflicts all over the world, and no one will be safe in that new security paradigm. I am honored to receive the Startup of the Year 2023 award for Ikius. Winning is not just a personal achievement but also an acknowledgment of all the hard work that everyone involved with Ikius and I have poured into building Ikius from absolutely nothing to one of the pioneering companies in modern web development. What sets you apart from the competition? Although next-generation technology is at the core of what we do, people are our biggest asset. We have always valued human-to-human interaction in every part of our operations. We provide highly personalized service combined with an obsessive approach to modern technology. This has enabled us to stand out in the highly competitive web development market. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? I love that we have such a talented team I can rely on. Many of us have a university background in Computer Science - which helps a lot in solving complex technical problems for our clients. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Haha, that’s a great question! I would probably be a Venture Capitalist or a Founder of another company. Building Ikius has been a good combination of both lines of work. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? For Ikius; success is seeing our clients succeed. A remarkable roster of happy clients from Helsinki to San Francisco is something we value a lot. Of course, financial metrics are also key indicators of our success. We have been profitable with increasing earnings and revenue ever since I founded Ikius in 2019. Tell us how your startup is changing the world. When Ikius was founded, the stuff we did was pretty obscure and esoteric, however now, it’s all the de-facto standard. I see that we have already changed the world as one of the pioneering agencies in Modern Web Development and continue doing so by utilizing emerging technologies successfully, way ahead of anyone else. How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2024? We continue to work with modern technology and methods to minimize our internal environmental impact and build sustainable solutions for our clients. What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2024? We continue to grow and expand in the US and EU. Which trend(s) are you most excited about in 2024? Share your reasons. I’m excited to see where modern web technologies evolve in 2024 and forward. 2023 had been another crazy year, especially in tech, with layoffs and the Generative AI takeover! Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. I’m worried about the global security and world politics. Share your biggest success so far and/or your biggest failure so far. My biggest success is building Ikius to the point where we are today. It all started from my bedroom in a shared apartment, with just me and my PC. I had just quit my job as a web developer and dropped out of the university. I am a long-time tech nerd and reader of HackerNoon, so it truly means a lot. Before PennyFly was even an idea, I graduated from Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in Cyber Security and was certified to work with the NSA. I fully expected my life would be immersed in all things hacking and counter-hacking, but shortly after graduating, what began as a hobby, writing and performing music turned into a serious career pursuit. Following label offers after moving to LA, I made the decision to stay independent while networking within the industry to build a team around me. This undertaking became much bigger than myself, snowballing into helping more and more artists, and today, we’ve worked with over 170 different artists at all career stages. As PennyFly grew, I began to wonder if I would ever utilize any of that education or if it was an unfortunate waste of time and money…thankfully, it wasn’t. Everything came full circle as blockchain and AI-driven solutions continued to dominate multiple major industries. My understanding of these technologies allowed PennyFly to integrate them into our services and workflows and ultimately expanded what we do into a new company division, as we have now catered to over a dozen web3-based projects. I often tell people we’re not exactly “reinventing the wheel” when it comes to artist services. We have mentored under some of the best marketing professionals in the industry and are simply offering the same major-label caliber services you would typically get from signing a larger label deal - Having been around for nearly seven years, we continue to be one of the only true label services agencies in the world that can replicate these niche services under one roof (and without the 360-style strings attached). In the past two years, we have seen increasingly heavy interest from artists outside of the US in need of our services, as they are unable to find what we do anywhere else. what truly makes us different is that we don’t gate-keep these services behind contracts that take ownership, rights, and freedoms away from artists. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? I feel incredibly blessed to be working alongside such passionate and driven individuals - but most of all, we’ve developed strong friendships over the years and consider each other family. As our artists know well, we are far from the stereotypical “corporate” vibes you see with most companies, especially other marketing agencies and labels. This goes a very long way when it comes to cultivating the right atmosphere for artists to thrive. While we are very results-driven and don’t take shortcuts, we’re also all close friends who enjoy hanging out at the end of a long day…from gaming to watching sports or streaming the latest South Park, we always make time to have some fun. Speaking of family, my wife Raye has been such an integral part of PennyFly becoming what it is today; she is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to dialing in the right branding for our artists, from web development to digital design. In contrast, Harry Malinski’s wife, Melody, has been a huge asset on the administrative side and is growing into a larger creative-driven role to complement our evolving needs in-house. What sets you apart from the competition? It really comes down to our unique combination of proven marketing techniques with real accessibility. We don’t do 360 deals or require artists to sign unfavorable contracts in order to get the same teams and services they would otherwise get from well-known labels. It is also entirely up to the artist whether or not they’d like to publicly mention involvement with us - some artists opt for a “silent partnership” where we support them behind the scenes without the portrayal of having been officially “signed”. There are pros and cons to both approaches, as plenty of artists also prefer the opposite, which is why we ultimately leave it up to them. The only thing that really matters to us is ensuring our artists are comfortable, motivated, and inspired to succeed. Lastly, we seem to be the only company in our niche that showcases a long-form compilation of testimonials featuring a wide variety of artists we’ve worked with, all on camera talking about their experience working with us. We treat our artists like family, which leads not only to success but also to having a lot of fun along the way. How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2024? What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing? We are simply going to continue doing what we do best: offering great teams to great artists. The traction we gain with our clients continues to speak for itself, and we are growing every week. A major focus for us in 2024 will be scaling up everything we do. From increased efficiency to better results, it’s hard to argue with the advantages these AI tools provide when utilized properly. On the other hand, we can’t forget the value brought by real artists, musicians, and writers. There is a human element that will always transcend machines attempting to reproduce that human feel. Currently, getting the most out of these AI solutions still requires a skilled, intelligent professional to gather some of what the AI produces in order to shape the final result into something practical and presentable. Stephen Goldberg HarperDB Denver’s Startup of the Year Winner. Q&A What does it mean for you to win this title? We are thrilled about winning Hackernoon's 2023 Startup of the Year! For us, community-driven awards are the most authentic and meaningful awards of all. It is further validation of what we have developed and continue to build upon as a company. We are grateful to all those who supported us in winning this award. What sets you apart from the competition? HarperDB was founded by developers who spent decades fighting the limitations of multi-system architectures. After exploring the logic behind systems like MongoDB, Kafka, Redis, and Node.js, it was apparent that combining the underlying systems into one distributed technology would have significant benefits from a performance, cost, and ease of development perspective.  From that realization, we created our unified system architecture that backs HarperDB. Aside from its performance advantage, I think HarperDB’s simplicity motivates companies to make the transition to our technology. We’ve seen distributed applications built in weeks with HarperDB that easily could have taken several quarters to plan and build with other technologies. Ultimately, HarperDB was a database built by developers for developers.  We built a product we would want to use. As our product continues to advance while we are focused on solving large enterprise problems, we still want to create a product that seamlessly integrates into a developer's workflow and is fun to build and deploy. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Our team is made up of amazing people. One of our core values is authenticity, and what I love about our culture and our team is that people bring their authentic selves to HarperDB. We have a team of weirdos and misfit toys who are extremely passionate about innovation and solving complex problems.  We like working on hard things, and we love delighting developers and customers. Our team is made up of people who do not let existing paradigms and patterns stop them but will push through to create something new and incredible. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Sleeping. We have been building HarperDB for almost seven years.  It has been an incredible journey, and we have had many amazing moments and a lot of hard ones. At the end of the day, everything that we have achieved has been due to the people who make up our team.  When we founded HarperDB, it was all about technology, and while that remains a huge part of what we do, I have learned that people matter more. If I weren’t running HarperDB, I would be doing something to help improve people's lives in meaningful ways. What that looks like exactly, I am not sure. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? From a business development perspective, proofs-of-concept (PoCs) are our number one metric. Although we also track npm and Docker downloads, PoCs are the key metric leading to business success. Since what we do is a first for the software development industry, people need to experience the benefits firsthand. We find that engineers tend to experience a light bulb moment with HarperDB once they fully internalize the breadth of value a unified system architecture can bring. After the light bulb moment, HarperDB tends to be part of nearly every deployment since building without it feels cumbersome and counterproductive. Tell us how your startup is changing the world. HarperDB changes the world on many levels. For , we simplify their workflow by giving them more capabilities with less effort. software engineers For , we empower innovation by providing them with systems that improve their agility and cost models. companies For , we make the technology they use substantially more performant, cutting down load times and delivering real-time experiences they did not have before. software users For the , we dramatically cut down on the infrastructure required to deliver software. Sometimes, by as much as 90%, making platforms that run on HarperDB more sustainable than systems that run on legacy alternatives. world How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2024? This title is a recognition that we are building a tool developers want to use. To embrace that, we will continue delivering features and performance improvements that help drive their software products forward. Today, nearly every feature we release is a direct response to requests from development teams worldwide. We will continue to serve them cutting-edge features that make their processes and products more performant. Furthermore, we want to continue to build a company where developers want to work.  We are successful due to the passion of the great technologists who have joined us on this journey, and we want to continue building a developer-led, techno-centric, authentic organization. What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2024? 2023 was a breakthrough year for HarperDB in many ways. Our product gained significant traction with three releases that embedded data streaming capabilities deep into our technology. This was a welcome addition for many companies courting standalone data streaming solutions since they now had all the power they needed without the multi-year journey standalone streaming solutions required. 2024 so far has been customer and market-focused.  We have seen a strong reaction in the market to our product and tremendous validation, with many large organizations implementing mission-critical workloads on HarperDB.  We plan to spend 2024 growing our customer base while continuing to innovate. Which trend(s) are you most excited about in 2024? Share your reasons. For the last several years, people have been exploring what distributed computing really means. We have seen containers explode in their usage and other distributed deployment methodologies.  That said, that has created new paradigm shifts in how people think about application development, compute, deployment, security, and many other areas. We are seeing 2024 as the year where experimentation becomes a reality.  Organizations, large and small, are embracing new architectures that unlock the true power of distributed computing to improve customer experiences, do more with AI and ML, reduce cost, and build high-availability architectures. In a lot of ways, this leads to the democratization of technology.  It allows people to build bigger and better without being locked into a single cloud vendor.  I am most excited about the things people will build with this newfound freedom. 2023 had been another crazy year, especially in tech, with layoffs and the Generative AI takeover! Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. We have had a pretty clear vision for where we wanted to take HarperDB from the beginning and what we wanted to build both as a product and as a company.  We try to stay focused on putting one foot in front of the other.  Ultimately, trends in the tech industry are cyclical, and there are booms and busts.  High valuations and low valuations.  Lots of hiring and lots of layoffs. Quite honestly, the trend that worries me the most is worrying about trends. People keep building great stuff.  Great people need jobs.  Good companies need funding.  Large companies need help solving big problems.  These things remain the same regardless of the current trends. I think the thing I worry about the most is people losing sight of the fact that this will all repeat itself. Share your biggest success so far and/or your biggest failure so far. Our biggest failure by far was that we were way too early for the market.  People thought we were CRAZY when we started HarperDB.  We were too early because we didn’t realize the problem we founded HarperDB to solve was not a common problem at that time, and only a handful of companies were experiencing it ten years ago. We should have done more research, talked to more companies, and paid closer attention to the market.  We were just so enamored with solving the problem that we didn’t do our homework.   We let passion get in the way of reason. Our biggest success has been our resilience as founders and as a team as a whole.  We are extremely proud of the team we have built and have had relatively little turnover in our time. We have also managed to stay alive and continue to build a tremendous product to reach the point where the market has caught up with our crazy ideas, which have become a commonplace everyday problem. In addition to our own articles, we see many independent creators writing HarperDB-related content for your site. It’s this robust community that has driven us to Hackernoon. Any words of wisdom you’d like to share with us? Be very careful who you take advice from.  We have gotten a lot more bad advice along the way than good advice.  It has cost us a lot of money and a lot of time.  We have gotten some really good advice as well.  Ultimately, if you're getting advice and following it feels inauthentic to who you are or the vision or values of your company, ignore it.  Trust your gut. Meet HarperDB, Winner of the Startups of the Year in Denver

This interview series celebrates all the phenomenal . Today we are talking with the CEO & co-founder of not8 - Yaroslav Medvedev. Congratulations, well-deserved! Thank you, it’s a great honor to be named Startup of the Year! We are super excited :) It’s a great milestone for our team and a recognition of our efforts. What sets you apart from the competition? Honestly, it depends on who you consider as our competitors - but I’d say that the main differentiating factors of not8 are: ability to work with live websites and apps real-time multipersonal collaboration multi-format feedback (text, video, screenshots) In 2024, we are also adding the AI assistant that will act as a product review companion, which will be another differentiating factor. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? Vlad & I have been working together since 2021 (we had another project before co-founding not8), and two main things that I like about our team is that (1) our values match, (2) our skills are complementary, so our responsibilities are clearly divided - Vlad covers everything tech-related, and I cover everything business-related. We both faced the problem of unstructured and ambiguous feedback at our previous jobs and experienced the pain firsthand, which makes us great candidates to solve it. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? Hmm, I like building things, but I’m not technical. So, if I couldn’t build things in my own company, I would probably do that at somebody else’s. I think I’d work in a Product Management department. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? Since not8 is still pre-revenue, our key metrics revolve around product usage. We measure the total number of installations, the number of active users, and the total number of notes left. As of today, we have 1500+ registered users who left 9500+ notes in total. Tell us how your startup is changing the world. Obviously, not8 is not one of those startups that tackle the fundamental problems of humanity, but we help teams build better products faster. With not8 Product Managers, Developers, Designers, QA, and Marketing Specialists can spend less time talking and iterating and focus on what matters the most - building great things! How do you or your company intend to embrace the responsibility of this title in 2024? Haha, I don’t think it will change much in what we are going to do, to be honest. We will just continue pushing forward, making our product better and our users happier. What goals are you looking forward to accomplishing in 2024? We have a big roadmap, but let me share a few main things. First of all, we want to create a not8 widget so our clients can collect feedback from external users more easily (users won’t need to install anything anymore to leave feedback). This is particularly interesting for enterprise clients with a large number of website visitors - e.g., eCommerce platforms. Another big thing we are going to work on is an AI-powered digital companion. Our AI assistant will automatically test your software for bugs, check that all UI elements comply with your brand guidelines, analyze your website content, and suggest improvements, both from marketing and SEO perspectives. It will provide contextual comments with suggestions right within the product you build and engage in conversations with your team. Which trend(s) are you most excited about in 2024? Share your reasons. AI obviously, it’s omnipresent, everyone is talking about it, and unlike many other over-hyped trends, I think this one is real. It has low barriers for entry (millions of people already use tools like ChatGPT or Perplexity) and high retention (I use AI tools almost on a day-to-day basis, and half of the people I know do so as well). I don’t see any other technology eclipsing this trend in 2024. To be honest, it will just continue developing and getting better. 2023 had been another crazy year, especially in tech, with layoffs and the Generative AI takeover! Which trend are you most concerned about? Be as brief or as detailed as you like. Layoffs are happening because less venture capital is available now, especially at the later stages. Companies are forced to cut their expenses and raise money on lower valuations than they raised just a couple of years ago. This is obviously a concerning trend, but I have a feeling that “VC winter” is coming to an end. Share your biggest success so far and/or your biggest failure so far. Building not8 to 1500+ users, getting into the top 1% of applicants who get the investment from Antler, and raising $270k are definitely my biggest successes so far, but hopefully not the biggest ever, haha. I try to get better every year, this is just a beginning. And failures… Who cares about failures? Let’s not talk about them :) Let’s just say that not8 is the 5th project that I’m working on. It is the most serious one as well - it’s the first time I’ve raised VC money and the first project of mine that I’m working on full-time. Working on something full-time is a completely different experience than working part-time, I must say. A lot more is done because you don’t shift your focus to anything else. We would love your feedback on HackerNoon as a tech publication! How has your experience been with us? So far, so good :) I’ve just recently become your active reader and community member. Honestly, I think what you are doing is great and HackerNoon is an invaluable resource for startup founders - it keeps you updated about all the latest trends and insights in the tech industry. Any words of wisdom you’d like to share with us? I think staying adaptable and open to learning is key in the current environment - everything seems to develop and change so fast. When we were starting out (which was just 1.5 years ago), almost no one knew about ChatGPT and Generative AI - now, almost every startup seems to have some AI functionality. But staying adaptable doesn’t mean running after everything that is currently considered a “hot tech.” It is about understanding the needs of your users and leveraging emerging technologies to make their experience better. Users first, “hot tech” second.
