If you have not heard before about it till now, Zepto is an Indian startup that delivers groceries in 10mins. You heard it right they claim (attempt or try and do deliver in some SKUs) to deliver groceries in 10mins. To date, the company raised, $360M and is valued at ~$900M. Firstly, I think the 10-minute delivery of most things is unnecessary. The number of things that you need in less than 10mins is far and few in between. This is one of those ideas I might don’t ever want to see in fruition because it’s a waste of a lot of resources. And most importantly this puts the delivery people at risk of getting into accidents and worsens their quality of life further. In terms of customer experience over longer-term Zepto like 10min delivery ideas won’t work because of the feeling a customer gets of mistreating a delivery person. Just looking at the effort it takes for a delivery person to get something to you in 10 minutes makes most people question their beliefs and next time they want to order for a 10 min delivery they will just walk down to the store in their apartment or select the non-10min delivery option which they will have overtime or might already be in place (I haven’t checked). So how will the 10min story end? Is there something that we are not seeing? Why did the Venture arm of Kaiser Permanente (KP) invest in Zepto? And remember KP is not for profit organization known for running one of the world’s largest hospital networks. I can see interesting scenarios play out. Firstly why pursue such an idea? The justification for about 10min on the outer surface is often talked about as customer experience. But in my opinion, it is business jujitsu. I am not sure if the founders think the way I do, but here is what I think. The fact that Zepto offers 10 mins delivery is a good stunt (stunts are not necessarily bad) to acquire new customers, investors including me love a big idea so the money will flow in, you are putting your competition like Swiggy, NinjaCart, BlinkIt and others in an uncomfortable position. They have to adapt to the new game set by Zepto and they will now be operating from a position of weakness than strength because you are driving the narrative. So what will the ending be for Zepto? Here are some scenarios that might play out. Zepto in the process of scaling 10 mins will create one of the largest grocery chains with a significant user base (and losses) and over time moves to a regular delivery model. In this case, looking back, the 10 min delivery is the main go-to-market strategy for creating a new grocery delivery business in India. They will continue to execute the business and over time can exist as an individual company. Competitors in the space both food and grocery delivery will try the 10min delivery, and realize that it is bleeding their cash reserves. Will stumble multiple times. They will realize the best way to solve the 10 min delivery problem is by acquiring Zepto and then shutting it down (or slowing it down significantly). One of the unicorns in the space will make an acquisition offer with partial cash + stock deal. With VC money becoming hard to come by, Zepto might burn through their recently raised $200M in 36-42 months. Failing to raise further capital because of macro conditions, they might get sold for less than the overall investment they raised. In either case, the 10min mania will end and remain as a back burner model. Most companies will say they will deliver some of their SKUs in 10 mins but most deliveries will not be in 10 mins and the status quo will remain in place. One lesson aspiring entrepreneurs should take away from Zepto is to swing for the fences even if it might end up seeming ridiculous to others. Even though I don’t like the fact that Zepto as a business is resource-intensive and as a negative side of modern consumerism, I do admire the confidence of the founders to aim for something big and create a narrative that is making bigger players react. It takes confidence and skill to pull off what they pulled off till now and I admire the gutsy approach!

video we are 0:04 going to talk about Boolean logical 0:07 operators so in the last video we 0:09 covered the basic jujitsu of Boolean 0:13 algebra kind of like what is the basic 0:17 most fundamental ideas behind Boolean 0:20 algebra and we saw that everything that 0:22 we talked about conversely their true or 0:24 false right so here we have all these 0:28 things converting to true or false 0:30 that's effectively what ends up 0:32 happening at the end so now let's go and 0:37 talk about the operators that I was 0:40 mentioning ok so before I start giving 0:43 you their rules and how they are defined 0:46 in the world of electricity or logic 0:49 gates or programming for that matter I 0:52 want to just give you guys an intuitive 0:54 sense of how it works because that's way 0:57 more important than memorizing these you 1:00 know truth tables for a lot of these 1:02 cases so ATLA so let me get try to give 1:06 you guys an intuition so let's start off 1:09 with and okay we're going to start off 1:13 with this logical operator as you can 1:16 see it's a special word in Python which 1:19 is why it highlights to orange if you 1:21 write and with 2ds it does not highlight 1:23 to orange and let's talk about what it 1:26 does so let's say I did um you know 5 & 1:31 5 it'll give me back a 5 and here it's 1:35 not really making sense 1:36 let's try true and true and let's see 1:42 what it returns it returned true now 1:43 let's try something like true and false 1:45 let's see what that returns that returns 1:48 false so now let me try to give you guys 1:50 an intuition of how it works for and 1:54 let's say there are there two things I 1:57 asked you do you like poison and do you 2:00 like pizza right umm if I asked you that 2:05 question and you could only answer with 2:07 yes or no what would you say 2:12 hopefully you would say false or no 2:15 right and then I would be and if I asked 2:20 you to elaborate then you might say I 2:21 might like pizza but I really don't like 2:24 poison right so the idea behind you not 2:29 liking poison but you liking pizza that 2:33 whole thing when you combine it with an 2:35 end that whole thing becomes false 2:37 because there's one of those things that 2:40 you don't like so you you can't say yes 2:44 to the whole expression that I gave you 2:47 right for and both of the things have to 2:51 be true for you to say yes to it like if 2:54 I asked you do like pizza and ice cream 2:55 you say yeah right but if I tell you 2:59 like jumping off of the cliff or do you 3:01 like jump or do you like doing your math 3:03 homework a lot and you like writing 3:05 essays in that case probably both of the 3:08 things you might not like doing your 3:10 math homework and writing essays and you 3:13 might say no I like doing neither of 3:15 them or for sure you would say false 3:18 right so I can say something like math 3:21 homework let's set it to false meaning 3:26 like you don't like it and let's say 3:29 long essays is equal to false and now 3:34 let's combine the two let's say math 3:36 homework and long essays you get back 3:41 false right math homework is really 3:46 false and long essays or false so false 3:48 and false gives you a false now let's 3:51 try pizza and let's say we like it for 3:54 my friend Danielle he loves pizza so if 3:56 you're watching this video that's who I 3:59 was thinking of when I came up with this 4:00 example let's do ice cream and let's set 4:03 that to true meaning we like both of 4:05 them and let's do pizza and ice cream 4:08 right and you get back true so even 4:12 thinking about it logically 4:13 whenever you combine something with an 4:16 end both of those things are now 4:17 combined so when you're answering you're 4:19 answering for both of them even in real 4:21 life both of those things have to be 4:23 true John 4:25 go throw out your garbage and then you 4:28 get to play right 4:30 so in that case both of those things 4:34 happen to be true if you throw out the 4:39 garbage you know then you kind of get to 4:41 play it's a little bit of a contrived 4:42 example there's more of an if-then 4:44 statement rather than an end okay how 4:48 about this even better 4:50 Johnny throw out your garbage and do 4:52 your homework and then you get to play 4:54 okay in that case the only way Johnny 4:57 will get to play his game is if he has 5:00 thrown out the garbage and done his 5:02 homework much better now I can now I can 5:06 sleep better all right that's the 5:09 breakdown for end so now let me just 5:12 give you some problems and throw it at 5:14 your face okay false and false quickly 5:17 what do you think is going to be you 5:19 should have said false false and true 5:23 remember one of them is false both of 5:25 them end up being false because we can 5:29 imagine that this is poison and then 5:31 this is pizza and you can't say true to 5:34 both of them because there's one of them 5:36 that you don't like for it to be true 5:39 both of them have to be true what if I 5:42 gave you true and false what if I gave 5:45 you true and true what do you think that 5:47 would be okay hopefully you're trying to 5:49 get a little you're starting to get a 5:51 little bit of sense of this why this 5:53 will be important later on is once we 5:55 get to the conditionals of control flow 5:56 section which we should be getting to in 5:58 the next video and there we're going to 6:01 be talking about how you can combine an 6:03 if statement use an end to check two 6:06 conditions and then the block of code 6:08 runs so if Johnny pizza even if you don't okay so 7:01 just to play along just imagine you like 7:03 pizza so if I ask you do you like pizza 7:06 or doing homework if you had to answer 7:12 that with the true or false what would 7:14 you say if you like pizza or doing math 7:18 homework if you could only enter the 7:20 true or false or yes or no you should 7:23 say yes or you should say true because 7:27 there's one of those things that you 7:29 like and I asked you or they're not 7:31 connected with each other right A or B 7:34 so let's now get and let me show you 7:38 guys this in code if I do false or true or pizza you would say true if you could 8:54 only answer that with one thing just 8:57 like if you know again we take Johnny or 9:02 our son Bob and we go Bob either if you 9:08 do your homework 9:09 or you throw out the garbage then you 9:11 get to play so he just goes oh sweet I'm 9:14 just gonna throw out the garbage so this 9:16 way he doesn't have to worry about doing 9:18 homework he decides to only do one of 9:20 the tasks and then he can play the game 9:22 but what if he went and tried to be 9:25 extra nice and threw out the garbage and 9:27 then when it did his homework but he 9:30 still would you know us being his dad or 9:34 mom still allow him to play of course he 9:37 did both of the things great that's 9:38 extra bonus but for him to qualify as a 9:42 player or like go play his games 9:45 he really needs only one thing that's 9:47 what the order does in our real life and 9:49 so that's what it does in programming as 9:53 well so now let's just let me just throw 9:56 some examples at your face and you try 9:58 to figure it out 9:59 true or false what do you think I'm 10:01 going to get quickly I'm going to get 10:03 back a true only one out one of them has 10:05 to be true what if I did true or true 10:06 what am I going to get back true 10:09 obviously what if I do true or or sorry 10:13 let's do false or false - false 10:16 statements you like poison or homework 10:21 you're gonna say no you know none of 10:27 them there you go so that's a little bit 10:31 of a breakdown of or and if I wanted to 10:34 break down not for you not is very 10:36 simple not is just something that 10:40 doesn't happen okay so it's it's just 10:43 the negation of something so if I said 10:45 not true what do you think I'd get back 10:46 I get back false if I did not false what 10:50 would I get back true it's just a 10:53 negation so if I do something like not 10:55 true or false what do you think I'm 10:59 going to get back what is this 11:01 expression going to evaluate to true 11:04 or Falls remember for something to be 11:07 true in the or but combined with the 11:09 oral boolean logical operator only one 11:12 of the statements has to be true so here 11:14 we do have a true so true or false 11:16 evaluates to a true and then right this 11:20 pretty much becomes true and then 11:22 calling not untrue gives us false so now 11:26 let's just run it okay and as you can 11:29 see we get back false so what I'm going 11:32 to do for you guys on clever programmer 11:34 comm is if you guys go to submit your 11:37 exercises here what I'm going to do is the stuff Boolean 11:51 operators work that's going to be very 11:53 very useful for you guys so then when 11:57 you're writing your if-then statements 11:59 you'll understand what you're doing okay 12:02 but this is kind of you know we just 12:04 need a basic understanding of it some 12:07 places go really crazy in depth into it 12:10 like creating things like not true or 12:12 false or true you know just just 12:18 combining it and making it into it like 12:23 these can be good exercises for you to 12:25 figure out but realistically when you're 12:27 writing code you're not going to be 12:28 doing stuff like this so if you can 12:30 figure this out in your head great but 12:33 um you know like you're not writing code 12:36 like this most of the time so I wouldn't 12:38 want to worry about it too much but if 12:40 you want to go ahead and give yourself 12:41 some crazy exercises like this to do or 12:44 come to my website where I'll have some 12:46 exercises for you guys to do that would 12:47 be great and before I conclude this 12:51 video let's go back to here I have put 12:55 together a truth table for you guys or 12:59 rather it's on Wikimedia @ org so I 13:04 didn't put a-- right we have that statement 13:20 and be say some other statement so we 13:23 don't really know what these statements 13:25 are for now but you can imagine them to 13:27 be whatever you want so let's say we 13:29 have some statement and some statement B 13:31 if a is false and B is false then a and 13:35 B you get back false right remember and 13:40 so if you have again a being poison and 13:45 B being homework poison and homework you 13:50 get back false you like neither of them 13:52 and if we have a or B since both of them 13:55 are false it's still false and not a is 13:58 just the opposite of that you get back 14:02 true and same thing over here we have 14:06 false and true false and true gives you 14:10 back a false false and true you only 14:14 need one thing to be true in or 14:15 statements you get back a true and then 14:17 not a which is saying you know opposite 14:21 of a since a was false you get back a 14:24 true ok so one thing I need you want you 14:28 to notice about and operator and or 14:32 operators if you look down the column of 14:34 the end operator you'll only see one 14:36 true case and the reason and the only 14:40 reason why it's true is because both of 14:43 the statements are true okay that's the 14:46 key thing to remember both of the things 14:49 are true and if you go and look in the 14:50 or column you'll see the or being false 14:55 only in one case and the only case is 14:57 false is when both of the things are 14:58 false okay so notice the key distinction 15:01 between the two okay 15:04 that's kind of all you have to know for 15:06 a Boolean stuff and I'm not going to go 15:08 into the next video with the really long 15:10 nested Boolean statements it's kind of 15:12 useless we don't really think that way 15:14 anyways and They're very 0:13 important in a lot of programming 0:16 languages and other ones and in C/C++ it 0:19 might be called maps but in Python it's 0:21 called a dictionary so let's see what it 0:24 is about. Okay so essentially the idea 0:29 behind dictionaries is to map keys to 0:34 values 0:36 hopefully that defines everything right 0:38 now 0:40 basically that's a very cryptic 0:42 definition that I gave you if you don't 0:43 know what it is yeah it maps two things 0:48 okay so anytime you have a relationship 0:50 between two things you want to use 0:52 dictionaries and when you don't have a 0:54 relationship relationship between two 0:57 things you want to use a list for 0:59 example if you want to just remember a 1:02 bunch of numbers and that's all you care 1:04 about you want to use a list okay so for 1:07 example I only care about a bunch of 1:10 numbers like this I want to use a list 1:15 now what if I want to know a way where 1:19 hmm 1:20 I don't know I use my cell phone right I 1:24 use this thing over here and using this 1:28 thing I can look up a person's name and 1:33 based on that person's name it gives me 1:35 back their phone number right or if I 1:38 type in their phone number it kind of 1:40 goes the other way around 1:41 whatever how can we do that well that's 1:45 the beauty of dictionaries my friend so 1:48 you're going to learn something very 1:50 powerful today so let's let's go at it 1:53 let's say I wanted to make a phone book 1:56 write with what we know in list I mean 2:00 can you think of a way how you might do 2:02 it I don't know I mean you could store 2:08 numbers right like this as a string and 2:12 then store the second number as a string 2:15 and go 4 5 6 2 2 4 4 3 3 right something 2:20 like that whatever these are not clearly 2:22 very silly numbers but ok and then you 2:25 can say phone book and give me the 2:26 zeroth number phone book give me the 2:28 first number also notice we're using 2:30 something different for coding we're 2:32 using rappelled IT right so it's 2:35 actually spelled repl by T and the 2:40 beauty of this is that it teaches you 2:43 how to code while it makes it very easy 2:45 for you to code you can use this without 2:48 having an actual working environment 2:52 locally downloading onto your computer 2:54 you can just run your code on the fly 2:55 and what I'm going to do for you guys 2:57 is number or one to get Bob's 4:10 number that would be terrible 4:13 and what if you had stored hundreds of 4:16 people in your list then it gets really 4:18 complicated but now let's use 4:20 dictionaries here's how dictionaries 4:22 work okay let me describe right here in 4:25 notes dictionaries okay 4:31 here's other word you have some 4:34 dictionary we will called it a dick okay 4:38 and you did and the store key value 4:42 pairs so if you put in a key gives you 4:44 back the value okay and how you store 4:49 things into a dictionary is like so your 4:52 key goes here and your value goes here 4:54 okay let's set a key one value 1 then we 4:58 can say key - value 2 okay and you can 5:03 keep doing this all day all right now 5:07 let's create a dictionary 5:09 ok so let's create our example phonebook 5:12 so I'm going to say 5:14 Kazi which is my name which is my last 5:17 name but I got go on my last name pretty 5:19 much everywhere so we're going to take 5:20 the string cause E as the cause e is the 5:24 what is that the key or the value if you 5:28 said key good job and we're going to 5:30 store the number 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 now 5:37 notice that I'm storing this as a string 5:40 and not an actual number like an integer 5:43 or something why do you think that is 5:45 well think about it if I remove the 5:48 quotes from here what is this going to 5:50 do is going to do 1 2 3 - 4 5 6 - 7 8 9 5:56 0 and I'm going to end up getting back 5:59 on negative 8223 so it's actually going 6:03 to end up storing it like this that's 6:05 not what I want I want the exact number 6:08 so usually when you want things exactly 6:10 how they are strings are perfectly good 6:12 data type to use there and now I'm going 6:15 to say Bob and I'm going to store Bob's 6:17 number as okay is this a which key is 6:22 this this is the second key and now 6:24 there's going to be the second 6:25 I'm going to store his number as 2 2 2 2 6:27 2 2 & 2 2 2 2 6:29 very easy number that Bob has he gets 6:32 tons of wrong calls and he gets very 6:37 annoyed now to make it a little bit 6:39 nicer on me to read this dictionary sure 6:41 I can have it as a long one line but as 6:43 you can imagine as we begin to store 6:46 multiple people it's going to be 6:47 spilling over to the right side so what 6:49 I want to do is make it easier on my 6:51 eyes and make it easier to type so I'm 6:55 going to go to the start of the line hit 6:56 enter and python knows what to do with 6:58 it and where to put it and I'm going to 7:00 go to the start of this line and hit 7:01 enter okay I'm also going to go here and 7:04 hit enter and I'm going to go here and 7:07 hit enter okay 7:08 and what this does for me is it just 7:11 makes it easier for me to read okay kind 7:14 of like this um and i can just simply 7:19 start putting things in here we can 7:21 leave that here there that's not a 7:22 problem we can leave that one right up 7:24 there and i can put in another number it could be whatever the 8:27 heck I want it to be right so now let's 8:29 go into phonebook and we can say Qazi 8:32 right that's you put in the key and this 8:35 whole thing liquefies and Python for Beginners, Part 16: Dictionaries

The leadership I’ve learned through life could be summed up and put on the front of a t-shirt, “ .” If that saying isn't already a thing: ™️. Though I left the U.S. Army a little over 20 years ago, I still stand by that statement. 95% of the leadership skills I learned, I learned in the Army : Most of my adult life has been spent in the military, until a year ago. I joined the Army in 1994, at 17 (my father signed the papers). In the end, I got bored training to go to war (I was young/dumb) and decided to get out four years later. Less than a year after that, I was back in the service, this time joining the U.S. Coast Guard. An obligatory backstory The time spent in the Coast Guard was split as both Enlisted and 15+ years as an Officer. However, given all of the training, schooling, and discipline I received along the way, I still credit my four years in the Army as setting the leadership bar for me. Here’s what I learned about leadership while serving in the Army’s 1/75th Ranger Battalion as an Infantryman, and how it’s applied to my life today, as a Project and Program Manager. Basic Training I thought this was the hardest thing I’d ever done in my 18 years of existence. There was very little in the way of leadership learned while attending Basic Training. Or, so I thought. Airborne School I thought was the hardest thing I’d ever done in my 18 years of existence. Learning how to jump out of a perfectly good airplane isn’t so hard once you do it. It’s the two and a half weeks getting to that point that’s hard. It’s full of instruction that’s ingrained into your head with repetitive motion, memorization, and the fear of possible death being removed via the squelch that was provided via continual movement and little real rest. Again, I didn’t see the application of any leadership education at the time. It was seemingly just a matter of staying alive as you walked out of a metal tube at 120+ miles per hour into the void. this RIP I thought I’d ever done in my 18 years of existence. I got my first glimpse of leadership while attending RIP when the cadre put the 30 hopeful guys into five teams with nothing more than a pile of gear and instructions to be out front in 30 minutes. Add to this an instructor walking in every three minutes telling us to do pushups or wall-sits, and you begin to see people crack from confusion alone. But wait, was that leadership? this was the hardest thing Ranger Battalion . My life at Battalion consisted of the following routine: run/lift/exercise, shoot, learn to run, lift, and shoot, run obstacle courses, maintain gear, learn close quarter tactics, hand to hand combat, and play hard. This was the gist of my everyday existence and a significant point of hardship for some. You could sum it up as an additional 3.5 years of Basic Training. But it was for a reason. I was wrong about how hard everything had been up to this point really The application of 4-years of leadership 👆 to Project Management Teamwork While I’m sure the mere mention of someone being in the military will conjure thoughts of collaboration, believe me when I say, it’s not the same across the board. Basic training proved this (teamwork?) in the first few weeks. However, the term and practice of teamwork was in everything we did at Ranger Batt. From entering a room and firing upon realistic targets to entering a bar in downtown Savannah. A Ranger would rarely be found alone, as the idiom state, “There’s safety in numbers.” While I wouldn’t be too far from calling a few of those men my friends, I’d be on the nose in referring to them as my teammates. Be it breaching a wall or contorting each other into submission during Jujitsu lessons; you came out knowing that the three for four nearest people to you at any given moment would be there for you when the shit got real. Amid a project, as the leader– inferred or otherwise– it’s your goal to build this kind of cohesion. I’m not suggesting you take the team to a ropes course or learn Jujitsu as a group (though it might help), but you need to take the time to figure out how to bring the team together. This will be the single most challenging thing to master, 95% of the time. Add in the current state of the world, and you being unceremoniously designated a Digital Project Manager, and you can raise that bar to 99%. Self Governing Over the last few days, while putting this article together, I didn’t initially have “self-governing” in the mix. I oft use the phrase “keep moving forward,” the source of which is my former squad leader yelling as we moved to another location. Now, remove that squad leader (he’s hurt, can no longer lead), or put it into a business context, remove your manager who didn’t show up to work. That team still needs to meet its objective, and that presentation you two were working on still needs to be presented to the executives– it’s not going to present itself. This is where self-governance comes in—taking the lead when there’s an unexpected lack of leadership. it It needn’t be anything so grave as a loss of life or one’s boss; there are plenty of times when you can step up to the plate and move the group, meeting, project forward. Learn to lead when there’s a lack of leadership, and your ability to build team cohesion when it’s needed most will come without even trying. [Could also apply to “picking up the slack.”] Idleness While being idle at home can be relaxing, it wasn’t “a thing” while in my barracks– it’s a concept that is "unlearned." If it was a working day, you were learning, doing, or otherwise remaining engaged during working hours. If there was “nothing to do” (<- I laugh writing that even today), you found something to do. Or, as your parents would tell you, they’d find something for you to do. In Airborne School, you're encouraged to learn on your own; it may lessen your chances of dying or, at the very least, getting hurt. This is applied to the office (or the home office), too; if your work/project is on hold or you finished your work for that day, use the time you have, the time you’re getting paid for, to remain engaged. Myself, I do training. And I make sure everyone knows about it. Your company expects you to keep abreast of the latest information concerning your job function. For me, that means learning some new ways to run a meeting or project management technique. Case in point, I’m working on my PMI-ACP (Agile Certified Practioner) training and application right now, next is to become a Certified Scrum Master. Why? Because I want to, and our bosses want to brag about us to their peers. That means we can’t stay idle; we need to keep learning, reading, and doing (read: “keep moving forward”). Time Management This is a huge one, perhaps the single most valuable “military to civilian” transitional skill taught/learned. While in the Army, or any job really, you’re given a list of objectives (think “needs to be accomplished”), and you’re usually given a specific time frame. If you’ve just destroyed the enemy bridge, yet you didn’t make it to the landing zone (LZ) for extraction in time, well, you might have a long, if not dangerous, walk ahead of you. The same, to a point, is correct in business too. If you have a task that you’ve been asked to complete and said you would, you need to get it done on time or risk the wrath of the enemy, 'er, I mean boss. My life now differs from then because I’m able to tell my manager that I under/overestimated my timeline, or I was outright wrong. I suspect most can do this without fear of reprisal (at least the first time). However, even this simple act is hard for some. Speaking from experience, it’s best to let your boss, manager, and team know that something went wrong (perhaps you misjudged something), and you cannot get the job done on time. Lying or just blowing off the deadline won’t fair well will everyone. Motivation Getting up in the morning sucks. You’d think being a career military man and a father of five, that I’d be able to get up without issue. If there’s an emergency, I can snap to-it without issue. But having the motivation to get up some mornings to work can be downright hard, especially now when I don’t have to see anyone as I’m working from home. Coffee does help. ☕️ I’m not going to tell you that being motivated to do everything/anything is easy, it’s not, and it’s a very personal thing. Sometimes people don’t like their jobs, and that can be a huge motivation drainer. However, if you have people counting on you, you need to pull up your pants, get a large cup of coffee/tea/water, and do your job. This will take motivation. You’re part of a team; you need to dig down and figure out how to get the job done. While it may be difficult for you to motivate yourself from the leadership side, others count on you to remain motivated for their sake. My wife would hear co-workers/subordinates say things like “his motivation is contagious” or something along that line (I’m not bosting, I’m making a point). Yet, she’d wonder why I wasn’t like this at home all the time. While it’s not a secret from her, sometimes, putting on that front for others is what gets the job done. Again, others count on you as a leader to motivate them. Do your team a solid and do just that. Persuasion It wasn’t until I was out of the Army some 5+ years that I realized I’d learned persuasive leadership. When I went to Officer Candidate School for the Coast Guard, I was with a group of guys cleaning a bathroom. Yes, even as a prospective officer, I got the lucky deed of cleaning the bathroom (or head if you will) 🚽. I’m not saying I am or was a good leader, but I persuaded the team of six that we needed to work together for the common goal of just getting it done. No big song or dance. It was the truth, I spoke it, and we got it done. I give my Platoon Sergeant, Sergeant First Class Dodson, the credit for teaching me this. He and I didn’t like each other much, but I was young, he wasn’t. He had a knack for motivating the platoon, but it wasn’t via motivational speeches per se; he did it by being truthful and making us all feel as if we were the ones who wanted to get the job done. He knew how to do his job; that’s why he was the man in charge. Wow, I really do want to walk 40 miles through the woods and mud with 110 pounds on my back. This goes smack in the middle of motivation and teamwork. It’s an art that takes years to perfect (I’m still working on it). Yet, if you’re able to do so, even a little, you can get the job done with even an unlikely team. However, the single “gotcha” that I can think of for this is the remote work scenario that many of us still face today. Trying to persuade someone to make the extra effort to get the project done is a lot harder when they can’t see or feel your energy or desperation. Clarity This is something I learned while just doing my job. That is, as a team, get from point-A to point-E without being seen, getting your Geometry homework done, and crocheting a sock. The point is, through all the stuff you need to get done, no matter how hard it seems, you need to take a moment to step back and look at the issue from the outside to see how this could be better… to have a moment of clarity. In the above case, separate the three tasks, and prioritize them. It’s not easy, yet you/we need to learn how to do this. We’ll call this “an adult thing.” I still fail at this one if I’m in the thick of it. I get too focused. It’s not until I’m done with work for the day that I see the error of my ways, that is, having that “duh” moment. And finally, Understanding willingness vs. ability This last lesson is one that anyone who joins the service or a first responder job can tell you they’ve learned. There’s a big difference between wanting/willing to do a task versus being unable to do it. Ethics aside, you can do a lot more than you think you can. You will do more than you think you can when the time comes. Before joining the Army, I wasn’t willing to jump out of a plane, ready to kill someone or march 35 miles in shitty boots. However, after my first year, I had jumped some 20+ times (almost) without issue, and every workday, I was learning how to kill people at the shooting range or hand to hand skills (it’s not as dramatic as it reads). As far as the road-marches, well, I just did those due to "external motivation." In business, while you’re not training to kill people, you will come upon those times when you don’t want to do something, but you’re able to. The job that was due this morning didn’t get done ( ), it’s Friday afternoon, and you’re the one who needs to do it to ensure the deed is done (it sucks being a leader sometimes, ‘eh?). You need to call your significant other and let them know you’re going to be late because you’re able to do this. This will rear it’s ugly head time and time again. It matters not though; if the task isn’t done, and you’re the leader, you’re the one that gets it done or take the hit. Choices... choices... Time Management This is the end 🤔 My point of sharing this is to show you that while we’re all learning things along the way, we might not know we’ve done so until the path worn by time is profound. You’ll have those ah-ha moments 💡 later in life and realize that you know how to handle this because your father’s friend’s neighbor taught you some 15 years ago. Just remember, keep moving forward, it’ll come to you. An interview with Lauren Sturdivant, CEO of Case Status If you’re building your startup in the south There will always be exceptions, but most investors aren’t going to invest in an idea. They want to see a proven concept with some real traction and a plan to scale the business up. you’re not going to be able to raise money from Angel investors without significant revenue. Investors want to de-risk their investments as much as possible. And the overall capital climate is more conservative in the south than out west. This leaves founders 3 options for funding their : MVP 1. Self-funded If you have the money and are comfortable taking on all the risk, you can always fund your business yourself. Pros: You get to keep 100% of your company. Not everyone has tens of thousands of dollars to invest in a new business venture. Cons: 2. Friends and family round Go to someone you already have a relationship with, someone who believes in you and knows what you’re capable of to raise the money. If you have friends or family who can handle the financial risk, this can be a great way to get your business off the ground. You give up a small percentage of your company to people you trust, or take on debt at little to no interested. Pros: Your investors most likely won’t have a ton of technical experience. Cons: 3. Revenue A third option is to build your company manually. Start small and start generating revenue right away, then re-invest that all back into the business. You may start off by consulting and build software to augment your consulting down the road. Or you could hack together existing solutions to create what feels like an entirely new product. Pros: This has the added benefit of validating your idea before anyone puts money in. Going the manual route is much slower way to build a business. Cons: After pouring her life savings into her business, she raised a small friends and family round in order to get her MVP off the ground. And within a week of launching her product, Case Status, she had her first paying customer. Lauren Sturdivant went with option number 2. Hey Lauren! What’s your background and what are you working on? Hi! My name is Lauren Sturdivant. I am the Founder and CEO of Case Status, an app for attorneys and their clients. I’m an attorney, and I have been practicing law for seven years. What motivated you to get started with Case Status? During my years of practice, there were a few pain points that were consistent regardless of the practice area. 1. Dealing with client calls In general, clients are going through an incredibly tough time in their lives, and they want consistent updates on their cases. When they don’t hear from their attorneys, they think their attorneys are not working on their cases. On the other hand, attorneys cannot get work done/focus on building their firm if they spend the majority of their day on the phone updating clients. This is especially true for personal injury attorneys. So you can’t bill for the hours spent on the phone. In personal injury law, you only get paid when the case is complete. Lack of communication is the top complaint clients have regarding their attorneys. This disconnect creates distrust with the person that the client should trust more than almost every other person in their life. 2. Getting new clients There are very specific rules about how attorneys are allowed to market themselves. This makes getting new clients one of the biggest challenges every growing firm faces. Referrals are the number one way attorneys get new clients. Case Status updates clients on the status of their case in real-time. Case Status also lets clients refer their attorneys with a single click. Case Status saves attorneys time,it allows clients to do the marketing for the attorneys, and it creates a stronger bond with clients. How did you fund the MVP of Case Status? Luckily, I had money in savings to start the initial process of creating the MVP. As we dove further into the project, I raised money from family. What did you need in order to raise money from friends and family? From the beginning, I was very open with my family about what I was trying to accomplish. It was only once I had a solid idea for how much building the application was going to cost and how I was going to take it to market that I asked my family to invest. Before I approached them for money, I put together a business plan and found a development team. They believed in me, and they had funds available so they were willing to invest in Case Status. How did having an estimate and a prototype help you to raise from friends and family? When I showed the Case Status prototype to friends and family, I explained the problems, and they saw and understood how Case Status solves those problems. There is something about having a working prototype that brings legitimacy to what you are doing. If you have to raise money, I would suggest developing a prototype to show investors and receive feedback. their eyes lit up. The prototype Lauren used to raise her friends and family round. How did you decide who to go to for your initial funding? It is important to go to the people you trust the most. You also need to approach people that have the funds available to invest . You do not want to put anyone in a difficult financial position. and can do so without expecting a return right away Can you also talk a little bit about why you should be careful how many people you go to? If you are offering and selling securities to even one person, you have to either register with the SEC or fall within one of the many exemptions under the Securities Act. When you start taking money, you need to know . those exemptions The exemptions discuss the permitted number of investors as well as the amount of money you can raise without registering with the SEC. Registering an offering with the SEC would make your company a public company, and going public is a very significant step for any company. How did you decide how much of your own money you were willing to invest? I believe in what we are doing, and I believe in myself, and I was willing to go all in to achieve my goal. I was willing to invest all of my savings. You decided to quit your job and go full-time on Case Status right from the start. Can you talk about how to balance funding the MVP with having enough left to do that? I am an all or nothing kind of person and I knew that I could never build a company if I was committed to another job. After doing some financial math, cutting down on expenses, talking to other loved ones whom supported me in this journey, I knew I could do it. Granted, it is very tough. , but I believe in what I am doing and I know I made the right decision. Every month is financial jujitsu Talk a little more about the specifics of raising the money. Did you have a contract? How did you manage expectations for getting the money back? Considering I was dealing with close family, we did not draft a contract. I need to repay the money eventually, but everyone was on the same page in that we do not know when that is going to happen. It’s important to be clear with expectations, thus, . if your investors are not close family members (and even if they are), it is best to put the agreement in writing Looking back is there anything you would have done differently when getting your MVP off the ground? No, I would not change a thing. If you don’t take risks, you don’t reap rewards. Also, you can’t expect another person to invest money into your business if you don’t do the same. Your level of investment is a clear indicator to others how serious you are. The Case Status MVP What has been the most surprising thing so far building Case Status? The most surprising part of building Case Status is meeting others in the community and realizing how supportive everyone is. Fellow entrepreneurs are willing to go out of their way to share wisdom, war stories, and make introductions. There is major talent in this community, and knowing that you are not alone is a huge help. startup What’s your advice to new founders who are just getting started? If you have a dream/goal, you can achieve it. However, on the same note, you have to be willing to sacrifice everything to achieve that goal. , and you will have to fight with every fiber of your being to grow your startup into a big business. from the beginning and understand what it is going to take to achieve your vision. Nothing will be handed to you You have to be honest with yourself , and you will have to fight with every fiber of your being to grow your startup into a big business. Nothing will be handed to you As you get started, I would suggest getting involved in the startup community. . Attempt to that has been through the process. People are busy, so offer value to potential mentors in order to learn. Lastly, break down your goals into achievable steps over the course of six months, and hold yourself accountable to those goals. Attend events and try to meet people find a mentor or someone you can contact with random questions What is your biggest challenge right now? Long ago, in an era when every junior could find a job and get an offer without much effort, I encountered situations that forced me to face the reality of the modern industry. It was a time when crowds were eager to enter the world of programming, but not everyone understood what to prepare for. A call from HR. It went successfully, and then I was invited for an interview. At the interview, there was a certain owner of the company named Elizar Viktorovich. However, he didn't ask any technical development questions but immediately started talking about the future job. It was strange; by that time, I had already had several real but unsuccessful interviews. Later, I googled this Elizar and saw a huge number of angry reviews from juniors on all open platforms stating that Elizar assigns tasks from freelancers but does not pay salary during the probation period, and after the probation period, he disappears. I did a test assignment for free, and the employer disappeared. The motives are really unknown. The task was simple but strange - to make a regular mobile application that reads data from JSON and shows a list of cards. The strangeness was that there were extra spaces and some letters from the Latin alphabet were replaced with Cyrillic :/; things that generally do not occur in practice. Honestly, it's not very clear what this test assignment is checking. I sent the task, but the employer didn't even read my messages.
