HackerNoon Reporter: Please tell us briefly about your background. I was trained and started my career as an engineer, and over time grew into running a large engineering team. I saw many challenges in leading those teams, the influence of which is how I came to co-found a company like Jellyfish. I’m also a startup guy. I’ve been at or helped to start half a dozen startups, including as VP of Engineering at Endeca, Founder at Loopit, and Chief Strategy Officer at Nanigans before starting Jellyfish. It’s been super fun to see the team grow and make a difference for our customers. What's your startup called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Our startup is called Jellyfish - it’s a platform that gives engineering leaders visibility into what their teams are working on, how they’re operating, and how they can improve. I’ve been in the trenches as an engineer and leader, so I understand how difficult it is to lead technical teams without the right analytics. Our goal is to make the lives of engineering leaders easier and help them make better business decisions by providing them with access to insightful data about their organization. What is the origin story? Dave, Phil, and I met 21 years ago when we were all working together at Endeca. In 2016 we got the band back together and found that we had all faced a common challenge in growing our careers, and we realized that we could make a difference for a lot of folks out there. At the time, there was all this software that helped sales, marketing, and other leaders make data-driven decisions, but that didn’t really exist for engineering leaders. We thought that was a large part of the problem we had individually faced, so in 2017 we founded Jellyfish to build that tool and really help engineering leaders like ourselves evolve, help drive product strategy and company direction, and just make informed business decisions. What do you love about your team, and why are you the ones to solve this problem? What I love most about this team is that they teach me something new every day. We (Dave, Phil, and I) are inspired to wake up every day learning new things from them. And frankly, they are all just good people who we like spending time with. We all know that startups can be a challenge, so I think it’s important to have people you want to spend time with on those challenging days. This problem that we’re solving is near and dear to our hearts, and I think we’re the team to solve it because we’ve been through the challenges of leading engineering teams of 10 people, 50 people, 100 people, thousands of people. All of these are different challenges, but the tools today are not sufficient for solving any of them. More recently, we’ve sat on the other side of the proverbial table and have seen what engineering teams can do to help the business grow more. More than just code, it’s about understanding how the team, the code, and the business fit together - the trifecta of successful businesses. If you weren’t building your startup, what would you be doing? I’d have to say, barbecue chef or oyster farmer. As a hobby, I’m a KCBS certified judge and a bbq enthusiast, and harvesting oysters in the summer is one of my favorite things to do. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? There are all the SaaS metrics that you all know already from hundreds or thousands of blogs and books. I could list them all here, but I don’t think that defines success for me. To me, success is really about this: are we making a dent in the way that companies make engineering decisions, and are we changing the way that engineering leaders do their work? For our customers, I think the answer is yes, and so I’m excited to see that success. What’s most exciting about your traction to date? We’ve been super lucky in this challenging time to find resonance and acceleration despite all the tough things going on in the world. We’ve seen some really exciting growth over the past few years, and it’s only continued to accelerate. In January, we announced our Series B funding along with 5X growth in revenue. Things haven’t really slowed down since then. It’s been a crazy time for our business, but for me, the most exciting part is that it’s a testament to the fact that we’re solving a real problem out there. What technologies are you currently most excited about and most worried about? And why? This may seem tired, but it’s been amazing to watch the confluence of cloud and AI come to fruition. Yes, we’ve all been reading about these things for over a decade, but it’s finally here and actually happening now. I used to joke all the time that every company, even air conditioning companies, is becoming a software company. It was awesome when a few weeks ago, a literal air conditioning company came to us for help! What drew you to get published on HackerNoon? What do you like most about our platform? The community! HackerNoon is an amazing community of smart, boundary-pushing hackers. There are some world changers here, and that’s why we’re always stoked to be featured. What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? Get out and do something, build something. Don’t spend your life reading blogs and interviews (except this one, of course!), but instead get going on something. Even if you aren’t working on your own startup, get out there and join one. You’ll learn a ton about the industry, companies, and yourself. You’ve got 40+ years to create the perfect startup - stop studying and worrying if the perfect idea isn’t coming to you right now. What is something surprising you've learned this year that your contemporaries would benefit from knowing? Pre-2020, I think we were all constantly on the go. As it turns out, I’m finding that having to sit on a pair of flights every week isn’t an experience I particularly miss! I love spending time with my family. My kids are young enough that they love spending time with us too. It’s a real blessing to be able to have dinner with them every night. Measurements were continuously collected at a nominal 10 minute interval with micro-sensors (ibuttons, thermochron-type; Maxim integrated) connected to a network that transmits the collected information when connectivity is available. All the collected data were visually inspected for extreme values outside the normal ranges of the variable in the time series due to sensor failures, identifying a single sensor reporting erroneous values that were reported as NaNs. 3.0.2 Computational information All calculations were run with a B550 AORUS ELITE AX V2 motherboard with 128 GiB DDR4 RAM, an AMD Ryzen 9 5950x 32 core processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics processor, and a 2 TB NVMe Samsung SSD 980. Software was installed on Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS 64-bit operating system “Jammy Jellyfish”. Graphical inspections and data cleaning were conducted with the tidyverse 2.0.0 package [13] implemented in the R 4.3.1 software environment [14]. Calculations were performed using Python 3.10. Data was parsed and cleaned from the original .csv values using Pandas 2.0.3. Various numerical operations were performed using the vectorized functions available in NumPy 1.25 [15], with additional statistical functionality from SciPy 1.11 [16]. Creating a Video Background on Your Website with HTML and CSS

THE BEGINNINGS OF LIFE THE BEGINNINGS OF LIFE As everybody knows nowadays, the knowledge we possess of life before the beginnings of human memory and tradition is derived from the markings and fossils of living things in the stratified rocks. We find preserved in shale and slate, limestone, and sandstone, bones, shells, fibres, stems, fruits, footmarks, scratchings and the like, side by side with the ripple marks of the earliest tides and the pittings of the earliest rain-falls. It is by the sedulous examination of this Record of the Rocks that the past history of the earth’s life has been pieced together. That much nearly everybody knows to-day. The sedimentary rocks do not lie neatly stratum above stratum; they have been crumpled, bent, thrust about, distorted and mixed together like the leaves of a library that has been repeatedly looted and burnt, and it is only as a result of many devoted lifetimes of work that the record has been put into order and read. The whole compass of time represented by the record of the rocks is now estimated as 1,600,000,000 years. The earliest rocks in the record are called by geologists the Azoic rocks, because they show no traces of life. Great areas of these Azoic rocks lie uncovered in North America, and they are of such a thickness that geologists consider that they represent a period of at least half of the 1,600,000,000 which they assign to the whole geological record. Let me repeat this profoundly significant fact. Half the great interval of time since land and sea were first distinguishable on earth has left us no traces of life. There are ripplings and rain marks still to be found in these rocks, but no marks nor vestiges of any living thing. The age of the world’s history in which we find these past traces is called by geologists the Lower Palæozoic age. The first indications that life was astir are vestiges of comparatively simple and lowly things: the shells of small shellfish, the stems and flowerlike heads of zoophytes, seaweeds and the tracks and remains of sea worms and crustacea. Very early appear certain creatures rather like plant-lice, crawling creatures which could roll themselves up into balls as the plant-lice do, the trilobites. EARLY PALÆOLITHIC FOSSILS OF VARIOUS SPECIES OF LINGULA Species of this most ancient genus of shellfish still live to-day (In Natural History Museum, London) It is well, however, to bear in mind that the Lower Palæozoic rocks probably do not give us anything at all representative of the first beginnings of life on our planet. Unless a creature has bones or other hard parts, unless it wears a shell or is big enough and heavy enough to make characteristic footprints and trails in mud, it is unlikely to leave any fossilized traces of its existence behind. To-day there are hundreds of thousands of species of small soft-bodied creatures in our world which it is inconceivable can ever leave any mark for future geologists to discover. In the world’s past, millions of millions of species of such creatures may have lived and multiplied and flourished and passed away without a trace remaining. The waters of the warm and shallow lakes and seas of the so-called Azoic period may have teemed with an infinite variety of lowly, jelly-like, shell-less and boneless creatures, and a multitude of green scummy plants may have spread over the sunlit intertidal rocks and beaches. The Record of the Rocks is no more a complete record of life in the past than the books of a bank are a record of the existence of everybody in the neighbourhood. It is only when a species begins to secrete a shell or a spicule or a carapace or a lime-supported stem, and so put by something for the future, that it goes upon the Record. But in rocks of an age prior to those which bear any fossil traces, graphite, a form of uncombined carbon, is sometimes found, and some authorities consider that it may have been separated out from combination through the vital activities of unknown living things. pre-trained vgg 3:40 model on imagenet so a quite small 3:42 network compared to those today super 3:44 accurate and fast producing results like 3:47 this called a segmentation map they 3:49 simply process all their images once and 3:52 get these maps for training the model 3:55 then use this map as well as the caption 3:58 to orient the model to generate the 4:00 initial image at inference time Astounding Stories of Super-Science August 1931: VOL. VII, NO. 2 - The Moon Weed

Darksiders III was released on the Nintendo Switch on September 29th, 2021. Thanks to the platform and Chris, a PR contact for , I got a review code and spent the past few days playing Darksiders on my Switch non-stop. Now that I’m roughly halfway through the game ad have tested both The Crucible and the Keepers of the Void DLC, what do I think of the game as a whole? How about when I take my Xbox One experiences into account? Strap yourselves in, hackers. We’re about to find out. Terminals.io THQ Nordic Story Taking place sometime after , but before and , Fury is tasked by the Charred Council to deal with the Seven Deadly Sins, who were freed from their prisons while War was chained up for causing the Apocalypse. Despite being reluctant and initially disgusted with regards to humanity, at the request of Ulthane with the promise of weapon and equipment enhancements, she does indeed help humanity. Darksiders: Genesis Darksiders Darksiders II Despite her initial attitude seeming cold and serious, she does help humans and is willing to hear one of them - who goes by the name of Jones -out even when he harshly criticizes Fury for her callousness towards humanity near the game’s beginning. He goes so far as to call her out as no better than the Angels, Demons, or the Seven Sins who all want them dead. That bluntness won me over and made Jones my favorite new character in the game. It also won Fury over, as she decides to spare him. His design screams mystery, which - along with him viewing humanity in the 3rd-person perspective, ad being voiced by the same voice actor that voice Strife in Lust’s clever illusion - clued me in that there’s more to him than what it seems. Just like with the rest of the game, the revelation of the truth of Jones’ real identity surprised me as much as it did Fury. Well done, game. Also, I’m very impressed with Fury’s character development. She does learn humility and respect as the game goes on, both towards humanity and the balance in general. Ulthane is still as awesome as ever, and the locations of the story are all richly detailed (more on that soon). Now, here’s something I learned while writing this review.  According to an IGN review with Joe Madureira, while they discussed possible ideas for ’s story. One idea (which SHOULD be in either Darksiders IV or Darksiders V if they ever make it) would’ve been to have the Four Horsemen go after Lucifer, or the “Dark Prince” as he’s referred to in-game. Please do that in the next game or two after , thanks! Darksiders III Darksiders: Genesis With that said, How does the gameplay stack up? Let’s get into it Darksiders III Gameplay Review Let me get the positives out of the way first. First off, the Jellyfish-esque creatures near and in the Bonelands worked properly and moved the way I needed them to quite well, and they responded to my downward ground thrusts quite well. Second, as described in the story section above, the environments are colorful and at some instances quite beautiful. Here’s one example, shown below: The combat is reliant on 4 mechanics: Fury’s Barbs of Scorn Whip -which doubles as a tool for swinging off metal chai pipes, Fury’s Secondary weapons that come with the next item on the agenda: the four Hollows, those being Force, Storm, Flame, and Stasis. The Flame Hollow’s counterattack burns enemies and inflicts burn damage. The Storm Hollow summons Electric tornadoes for Shock Damage. Force Hollow pulls all nearby enemies close to her, and then unleashes a circular burst of Force energy inflicting massive damage. The Stasis Hollow makes Fury invulnerable with a Stasis shield that slows all enemies it touches. The one downside to that is that you’re stuck in Stasis Hollow form until the shield and slow effects end. These Hollows grant environmental effects for Fury, such as the Flame Hollow granting Fury a Triple Flame Jump. The Storm Hollow gives Fury the ability to glide up Tornadoes in the environment and glide down to get to further places. The Force Hollow allows Fury to hammer through purple rocks and roll on purple rock walls as well as allow Fury to deal with Gluttony under the water by allowing her to walk on the surface of the deep. There are three types of Souls: Green health souls that refill the Nephilim’s Respite charge, the Blue Currency souls, and the Yellow Wrath Souls. This game also includes the Crucible and the Keepers of the Void DLCs. Considering I didn’t have enough to buy the game and its’ expansions on Xbox One, this package does addon some good extra content, though I’m bummed that the game wasn’t given the name Darksiders III: Furious Edition. It just would’ve fit, personally. Not a gameplay complaint, though. With that said, however, I do have some complaints. The 30fps I can live with. However, some things in the last main location - The Scar - such as the Giant Tornado you need to quell before you’re able to rematch Wrath in battle and the rolling Spiked Girders are INSTAKILL obstacles that need to be dealt with by sprinting - not merely running - to the nearest tunnel, and using Stasis on them and blocks, respectively. https://twitter.com/BryanApplegate5/status/1444504214026084353 Next up is that Performance. My goodness. the Graphics took a hit (of course). The game slows when dealing with 6+ enemies on screen at once. And the most egregious complaint I have involves two things regarding souls. First, you can lose them by dying (like any Soulsborne-esque game). Second, as you level up Fury’s stats and beat the Seven Sins, the enemies will get stronger, kinda like in . In addition, Fury has NO invincibility Frames - or IFs in short - when dodging! I got used to it eventually, but still, that’s kinda messed up. Lunar Silver Story Saga You know what else hurts? The cost of goods going up as you progress in the game and buy them. There are glitches that make progression and item farming much easier, but none of them worked when I tried them out for the review. It’s odd because they still worked according to various Youtube comments. I guess it made the whole experience more satisfying, but still. . . Lastly, if you level up to 50+ by the time you reach the Bonelands, every enemy and boss in that area will one-shot you… UGH!! Darksiders III Review: Final Verdict Fury’s adventure in is quite interesting. The game stutters in FPS performance. The freeze when loading a new area or saving progress is infuriating. The strengthening of enemies as you progress is annoying, and the glitches and puzzles make the game too repetitive at times, if not easy when executed correctly. Darksiders III That said, I still loved the experience I had. The game’s music was incredible. The environments were as desolate as I’d expected on a post-apocalyptic Earth. The mix of old and new enemies was interesting and various. The bosses were all awesome (Yes, including the DLC ones), and that scene at the end with Jones and the Makers making their big stand… it makes everything worth the struggle. FINAL SCORE: 7.5/10
