Interchain Accounts V1 As different chain ecosystems prepare to launch different products based on Interchain Accounts, we wanted to share further details around the usage of which we hope will help contribute to smooth and successful rollout across the Interchain. Interchain Accounts For Users of IBC: What is the difference between an Interchain Account and an account I had before? Do I, as an end user, need to worry about Interchain Accounts? IBC Interchain Accounts enables cross-chain communication and chain-to-chain interactions. Interchain Accounts function in the background to end-user interaction as something more akin to granting blockchains the power to open up their native functionalities as an “API” or service endpoints to be called by another chain, and then executing the calls to these endpoints over the Interchain Account channel. Most bridges, on the other hand, simply enable the passing of assets back and forth. One way to think about the potential of this new feature is what it enables for the user experience of Interchain native models. In a traditional framework, the end user would log into an interface representing chain A and pass an asset to chain B via an IBC transaction. The user would then be required to log into another interface, this time representing chain B, and complete the remainder of the product flow. With an Interchain-native product model, a user can complete the entire flow within a single, streamlined user experience where chains pass sets of instructions and execute transactions under the hood — all without the user ever having to leave the first interface. Interchain Accounts enables Interchain-native business models and establishes interoperability as a basic primitive. For Builders in the IBC Gang: The most important IBC component to understand when it comes to Interchain Accounts are channels. Channels are created between different IBC enabled chains and connect two ports which are namespaced by the IBC application module that they refer to. For example, in the case of token transfers between the Cosmos Hub and Osmosis, the Hub uses channel-141, ‘transfer’ port for ICS20 transfers, to connect to the channel-0 ‘transfer’ port. All tokens transferred over a channel will be assigned the as other tokens flowing over the channel, which looks like this ibc/<hash of the channel-id & port-id>. same denomination IBC is designed this way because the path that an asset has traveled determines the security of the asset. Because of IBC’s light client based design, there is no need to trust an external party for verification of transaction validity. Cosmos recently hosted an event titled “Updated Cosmos Roadmap and Interchain Security” featuring Billy Rennekamp, the new Cosmos Hub Lead. On September 6, 2021, Billy participated in an interview conducted by popular YouTuber Cryptocito, which was soon followed by an exclusive Reddit AMA on September 7, 2021. These live events gave the community the opportunity to ask Billy specific questions about Cosmos Hub and exciting future developments. For those of you who didn’t get a chance to tune in live, you can find the links to both events here: Interview with Cryptocito AMA on Reddit The following recap contains the key insights and highlights of the features and upgrades that Billy foresees coming to Cosmos Hub in the short- to mid-term. Upcoming Cosmos Hub Features The Cosmos team is currently preparing the Vega upgrade of the Cosmos Hub that includes an update allowing for the use of Cosmos SDK v0.44.0. This version includes updates to the network’s stability and security, in addition to brand-new features such as the and modules. AuthZ FeeGrant AuthZ provides any Cosmos account with permission to access other accounts in order to execute messages on their behalf, allowing the control of multiple accounts with different permissions to enhance the security and user experience within the ecosystem. FeeGrant lets one Cosmos account pay gas fees for a different account, helping developers facilitate onboarding methods where users can verify themselves and receive fee tokens to test applications, amongst other useful configurations. Additionally, with the Vega upgrade, Cosmovisor has been improved with automatic backups that make it easier to implement new features without disrupting the network and validator processes. There’s also been a recent proposal to include an IBC packet routing feature, which is an essential and important feature for Cosmos Hub as it will simplify the process of using IBC as a router. Gravity DEX and Emeris The implementation of marks a huge milestone and major value-add for Cosmos Hub. However, there are some arguments that Cosmos Hub could lose its credible neutrality through integrating a DeFi application, given that many believe it should preserve the ethos of hub minimalism through running fewer applications. The solution is to find the right balance between both sides of the spectrum — if there’s too much emphasis on one side, you’ll lose the benefits of the other. Gravity DEX marks the beginning of a new era of blockchain development and application on Cosmos. It provides an optimal user interface while also tying the API endpoints in the background of the different blockchains it aims to support. In essence, Emeris is creating a unified interface for multiple blockchains, coupled with a product suite that provides an overarching experience around other applications — all starting with Gravity DEX. Emeris Interchain Security and ATOM Functionality Interchain Security is a highly-anticipated feature coming to Cosmos Hub. The Cosmos Hub has the most mature set of validators and high scaling capacity. With the implementation of Interchain Security, the Cosmos Hub can take this value to new heights and make its robust security available to other networks, directly enhancing the Hub’s utility and expanding ATOM functionality. Interchain Security also allows for more options to be provided around the blockchain design space. For example, the more features and modules that run on a single blockchain inherently make the chain more prone to attacks or bugs. A successful attack on a DEX, bridge, or other modules could bring the entire Hub to a stop. Therefore, breaking out specific modules to run as independent blockchains, while using the same ATOM secured validator set, allows them to run in parallel as part of other state machines — if one is attacked, the others aren’t affected, and can continue to operate normally. As projects and dApps (decentralized applications) on Cosmos Hub begin to truly take off, they may begin to run into scalability issues, particularly after large numbers of users (in the millions) begin utilizing them. If this is the case, it makes sense to break up these modules into separate blockchains and enable horizontal scaling, especially when a single blockchain runs into its limit of vertical scaling. Interchain Security One Reddit AMA participant wanted to know whether chains that use Interchain Security from the beginning still need their own token and if there’s demand from projects to use it, to which Billy replied: /“V1 candidates include the chain name service, the Gravity DEX, and Ethereum bridge. As mentioned above, V1 is especially useful for scaling and security, both nice to haves but not absolutely necessary at this point. It is important, however, to progressively develop the technology, so deploying a live implementation of V1 will help us get to V2. It might be the case that we want to initially launch with something lower risk like an “empty” blockchain that just produces blocks, but is nonetheless secured by the full ATOM validator set. These plans are still being developed.” Shared security testnets are tentative for deployment by Q4 2021 and on Cosmos Hub by Q1/Q2 2022. Interchain Accounts Liquidity staking derivatives are another hotly-anticipated feature, one possible implementation is made possible by Interchain Accounts, an IBC-based protocol allowing for an entire blockchain to control an account on a separate chain. For instance, one blockchain can own ATOM tokens and stake them on Cosmos Hub using interchain accounts. If it keeps track of all ATOM tokens staked, it can print transferrable derivative vouchers as they exist on the blockchain in the form of any coin or token. Another Reddit AMA participant asked Billy what he’s most excited about for the Cosmos Hub, Cosmos ecosystem, and cryptocurrency in general, in the coming 12 months, where Billy replied: “I’ve always been a huge fan of the work being done around Interchain Accounts. It’s one of the biggest value unlockers for interoperability that will have a huge impact on what becomes possible for blockchain-to-blockchain interactions…the most obvious and exciting uses of Interchain Accounts allow a whole category of liquid staking and staking derivatives, blockchain-to-blockchain business operations (like DAO fund management and DeFi operations), as well as an extensive benefit to custody providers who make it possible for institutional investors to participate in blockchain applications.” NFTs on Cosmos IRISnet has driven a working implementation of an NFT module on its ecosystem through Uptick. They’ve also been pushing a Cosmos SDK implementation of an NFT module, allowing those building on Cosmos SDK to gain access to it. One of the most promising uses is the IRISnet project with the Chinese government. They have a library of congress containing precious Chinese art deemed important for the country’s history and culture. Several of these NFTs were minted with a compliant version of Cosmos SDK. Cosmos Hub and Interchain Security—AMA Recap with Billy Rennekamp

One of the features that make blockchain technology so appealing is its high degree of security and resistance to attack. In a Proof-of-Work (PoW) network, blockchains are secured by miners that lend hashing power to the network. The higher the hash rate, the more difficult for a bad actor to carry out an attack. The Bitcoin network is now widely considered large enough to deter would-be attackers, however, smaller chains with lower hash rates are often vulnerable to malicious attacks. The same is true with Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks, in which validators (not miners) secure the network by staking cryptocurrency and validating new blocks based on how much of the cryptocurrency they own (their ‘stake’). The more value staked in a network, the more secure the network. For smaller and emerging chains, the relatively low amount of resources to carry out an attack can make their networks vulnerable. To circumvent this problem, larger chains can share security by lending their cryptocurrency capital to validate blocks on the smaller chain. In the Cosmos network, this shared security is known as Interchain Security. Interchain Security Is the Cosmos Solution to Shared Security While existing shared security architectures have opted for top-down designs, Cosmos continues to build from the bottom-up. It’s not that we don’t admire a grand cathedral, we just can’t imagine living anywhere but the Bazaar. Cosmos subscribes to the notion that sovereignty and interoperability are the two key ingredients for building an open ecosystem of blockchains that can scale for mass adoption. What Makes the Cosmos Hub a Virtual Port City By allowing anyone to participate in the Internet of Blockchains, Cosmos is like the Bazaar model. There may be fewer guarantees about orderliness or consistency but this design allows for faster and more diverse ideation and development to take place. It’s this difference in design and ideology that has caused of Cosmos-based blockchains with a diverse set of features and stakeholders. an explosion How Interchain Security Works Interchain Security has been referred to by many different terms: Shared Security, Cross Chain Validation, Cross Chain Collateralization, Shared Staking, and Interchain Staking. For the sake of simplicity, let’s restrict the use to the following three terms: Shared security is a family of technologies that include optimistic rollups, zk-rollups, sharding, and Interchain Security. Shared Security Interchain Security is the Cosmos-specific category of Shared Security that uses IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication). Interchain Security Cross Chain Validation is the specific IBC-level protocol that enables Interchain Security. Cross Chain Validation At a very high level, Interchain Security allows for a provider chain (like the Cosmos Hub), to be in charge of producing blocks for a consumer chain. It does this by sharing the set of validators who are in charge of producing blocks. The participating validators would run two nodes, one for the Cosmos Hub and one for the consumer chain, and receive fees and rewards on both chains. In order to be eligible to produce blocks on the consumer chain, the validator would use the ATOM tokens they’ve staked on the Cosmos Hub. If the validator does a bad job producing blocks on either chain, they risk having their ATOM tokens destroyed by a mechanism called “slashing”. The consumer chain uses IBC to communicate with the provider chain to keep track of which validators are participating in Interchain Security using Cross Chain Validation. In this way, the security gained from the value of the stake locked on the provider chain is shared with the consumer chain. Interchain Security Brings Value to the Cosmos Hub There are two primary reasons that Interchain Security is valuable to the Cosmos Hub. The first reason is because it allows for “hub minimalism” and the second is to lower the barrier to launching and running secure sovereign decentralized public blockchains. Let’s take a closer look. Practical Hub Minimalism Practical Hub Minimalism is the strategic philosophy that the Cosmos Hub should have as few features as possible in order to decrease the surface area for security vulnerabilities and to reduce the chance of a conflict of interest between user groups. A hub minimalist might be against a name-service module being on the same blockchain as a DEX protocol, for example, since users of the name-service module must now accommodate users of the DEX even when they have different interests. At best, divergent user groups can peacefully coexist and, at worst, differences may result in hard forks that diverge in the features of an application. The current Cosmos Hub is adding more features, which carries some of the risks that hub minimalism is concerned with. Should Interchain Security become available, it would be possible to satisfy hub minimalists by allowing for each distinct feature of the Cosmos Hub to be an independent chain that is validated by the same set of ATOM-delegated validators. This way, the operation of each function could occur independently without affecting the operation of other ATOM-secured hub-specific applications. These separate for governance, fees or other application specific uses that could furthermore be used to pay provider chain validators for their services. consumer chains may even want to have their own token Lowering the Barrier to Security The security of a network is often described as a function of the cost of attacking that network. In Tendermint consensus, we target ⅓ and ⅔ of locked stake for various guarantees about liveness and correctness. This means that, in order to do any of a variety of attacks against the network, you would need to acquire ⅓+ or ⅔+ of all staked tokens. The crude way to calculate the cost of an attack is to take the quantity of tokens needed to achieve these proportions and multiply it by the current market price for that token. We’ll call this the . Cost of Corruption The Cost of Corruption calculation doesn’t account for the availability of any specific token but it does give a very rough estimate for how secure a chain is. It’s important that the total value locked (TVL) on a chain remains less than the Cost of Corruption, otherwise the chain should be considered insecure. Since the ability of a chain to serve a valuable purpose is often dependent on the TVL it can handle, it’s important to find ways to increase the Cost of Corruption for chains in the Cosmos ecosystem. Take Osmosis for example: at today’s prices (Aug 18, 2021) the market cap of the network is ~$330MM while the TVL is ~$145MM. Theoretically someone could buy ⅔ of the total supply of Osmo for ~$220MM and steal the ~$145MM locked up. Of course this wouldn’t be worth the effort, but should the ratio become more skewed this might in fact be an attractive target for attack. Interchain Security allows the Cosmos Hub to assign the value of the Cosmos ATOM to the Cost of Corruption for any chain. At today’s price of ATOM (Aug 18, 2021), this would increase the Cost of Corruption by up to ~$3.5 Billion. Eventually this technology could be shared across a number of networks in multiple directions further compounding the total Cost of Corruption for any consumer chain. Interchain Security V2: Layered Security Cosmos SDK chains that have already launched mostly already have staking tokens. Similar to Osmosis, these chains may already have a relatively safe ratio between TVL and market cap. Rather than replace their own staking token for the provider’s, they can be combined in what is called Layered Security. You would have the full weight of the consumer chain market cap with an additional layer of the provider chain’s market cap. Layered Security, or Interchain Security v2, would allow the combination of a local consumer chain staking token with the Cosmos Hub ATOM provider chain staking token to determine the composition of the validator set of the consumer chain. The relationship could be imagined to be extended even further. One day you may have lateral shared security agreements between large networks going both directions. Cosmos Hub may share ATOM value with any of the other validator set and the other way around. At that point it looks more like mutual security insurance across sovereign networks, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. What The Interchain Sustainability Mission is About

In light of increasingly high gas fees on Ethereum, various DeFi protocols have migrated their services to L2 solutions or launched directly on Ethereum-compatible chains instead of Ethereum itself. Due to the nascency of L2 solutions, many DeFi protocols are adopting the latter approach. However, despite it being easy to port an existing Ethereum dapp to an EVM-compatible chain like xDai Chain or Binance Smart Chain (BSC), the UX remains tricky. In this piece, we’ll dive into the problems that users face when using a dapp on another chain, how Interchain Transaction Bridge (“ITB” for short) solves the problem, followed by a case study. Problems from a user’s POV If you mainly use Ethereum dapps on your desktop, chances are you have Metamask installed. And to interact with dapps on a non-Ethereum chain for the first time, you need to change a bunch of settings in Metamask. Here is what the process looks like: Yikes! It’s not surprising that most users will bail out part way through the process. At the other end of the spectrum, we have mobile-only users. For this kind of user, if the mobile wallet they use does not support the chain that a dapp resides on, they cannot use it at all. For instance, if you’re using Argent, you cannot use Pancakeswap (Uniswap equivalent on BSC) or Venus (Compound equivalent on BSC)—simply because the wallet doesn’t support BSC. Furthermore, sometimes a protocol has different settings on another chain. For instance, Cream Finance, a money market on Ethereum, Fantom and BSC chains, has a separate asset list for each chain for users to borrow and lend (19 assets on Fantom, 33 assets on BSC and more than 50 assets on Ethereum). As a result, users need to switch their network settings to see each chain’s supported assets, creating a UX nightmare. Most troubling for new users, a given token will likely have different variants on different chains. For example, USDC on xDai and USDC on BSC are entirely different, incompatible tokens. The last problem is that you need to hold different gas tokens for each chain - BNB for the BSC chain, xDAI for the xDai chain, FTM for Fantom, etc. Gas fees for each chain also vary wildly: 1 Gwei is normally fine on xDai, whereas BSC enforces a 10 Gwei minimum. Nativating gas fees is already difficult for many users, and adding base multiple tokens to the mix only makes things worse. (Update on 2021/3/5) While this article was under review, Metamask implemented EIP-3085 to allow dapp developers to add a button on their site. Users can click the button to add a new chain setting on their Metamask and subsequently switch to that chain - a significant improvement indeed. How Interchain Transaction Bridge solves these problems The goal of ITB is to let you go to a non-Ethereum dapp website, connect your wallet (Metamask and mobile wallets alike), and start using the dapp as if the application was on Ethereum. That’s it. You don’t need to know which chain the dapp is on. You just go to the site and start using it like any modern web application. And this functionality is available and working today. Under the hood, when you send out a transaction, it is passed automatically to the chain where the smart contracts reside. That’s the reason why this technique is named “Interchain Transaction Bridge.” What’s more, using this technique, any gas fees on the non-Ethereum chain are covered by the dapp developer, and transactions typically confirm in seconds. Sounds too good to be true, you might wonder. In the next section, we’ll look at an example of this in a live environment. Perpetual Protocol is a decentralized exchange where you can connect your wallet and directly speculate on an asset’s price movement, with leverage if desired. To open a leveraged position, users need to deposit USDC and use that as collateral for the position. If you open a long position and the underlying asset’s price increases, it’s a profitable trade for you (or a loss, in the opposite case). Because everything happens on-chain on Perpetual Protocol, trade consumes lots of gas (i.e., computing power) on the blockchain. To give you some context, each trade would if the transaction were on Ethereum. As such, we migrated the smart contracts to the xDai Chain, an Ethereum-compatible chain where each trade costs 0.005 USD on average. cost around 100 USD worth of gas Unfortunately, not that many people knew about xDai Chain when the protocol launched in December 2020. And the previously mentioned problems (setting up Metamask; users needing native tokens to pay for gas on another chain) promised to make adoption very challenging. To overcome this, Perpetual Protocol’s developers came up with the idea of ITB, allowing users to trade on another chain without even realizing it. There are two components to make ITB possible - meta transactions and an on-ramp/off-ramp process. Meta Transactions Normally, when we send transactions, the wallet will submit signed transactions to a blockchain, as the diagram below shows. However, for meta transactions, the wallet will pass the signed message and other parameters to an automated relayer. The relayer then submits the transaction to a different blockchain. The user benefits from the cheaper, faster chain without having to do anything. On-ramp/Off-ramp process The next step is the on-ramp/off-ramp process, which users rely on to deposit and withdraw their funds to and from the xDai Chain. There are three steps involved in the single trip: 1. Grant permission to move USDC on Ethereum The on-ramp process’s end goal is to migrate users’ USDC to the xDai Chain, so the first step is to ask users to permit our smart contract to move the USDC on behalf of them. 2. Transfer Tokens to the xDai Bridge Followingly, users need to transfer the amount of USDC they want to deposit to the Ethereum side of the xDai Bridge. The Bridge will safeguard the deposited USDC until users request to withdraw their funds from the xDai Chain. Users don’t need to pay gas fees after this step. 3. Grant permission to move USDC on xDai Chain Once the amount of USDC deposited is credited to users’ addresses on the xDai Chain, users need to grant our smart contracts on the xDai Chain permission to use their USDC on the xDai Chain. From this point on we use meta transactions to execute users’ trades to the xDai Chain. Now, users can start trading on Perpetual Protocol without paying gas fees (they just need to sign a message on their wallets, like the one below)! The off-ramp process is much the same, only in reverse. Users approve USDC to be moved to the xDai side of the xDai Bridge. In turn, the Ethereum side of the xDai bridge releases USDC on Ethereum back to users’ wallets. Cons of the Interchain Transaction Bridge Each design comes with trade-offs, and the ITB is no exception. There are two shortcomings of the ITB: 1) Limited Hardware Wallet Support Due to technical limitations, Trezor users can’t use the ITB, and Ledger functionality is very limited. Neither of these popular hardware wallets will work with the ITB when connected to Metamask. But the developers can use the (EIP-3085) to switch network settings so that hardware wallet users can use the dapp once they’ve sent their funds to the secondary chain (still no gas fees thanks to meta transactions). aforementioned new Metamask feature 2) Limited Applicability Only certain types of dapps can adopt the ITB, such as synthetic assets trading, derivative trading, or margin trading. For other services like spot trading, users expect to receive the exchanged assets on the same chain once a transaction concludes so the ITB won’t work unless all assets swapped are already on the secondary chain.
