This is part 2 of a series. If you are reading this and it feels whoa out of context I will kindly direct you back to part 1 click here: After the long, hard journey of scrolling through a never ending feed of network requests, painstakingly extracting all the juicy, mouthwatering data and generating my totally *slay* graph, I did what every normal person would do- post it on Instagram, where my epic journey all started. I know, its a very circular narrative structure, for the English nerds out there ;) And when I posted it and it reached its terminal like count (by guessing, around 30), my friends told me that they liked my post when I talked to them the next day. That was a great ego boost but I was wondering => did they really like it? And as you can see from the graph, I have 10 posts. Every time I post, the next day, people would say "omg that was so good i totally fr fr liked all ur posts" or something like that (memories can be faulty). But did they really though? As you can see from the crystal clear data, my likes were fluctuating, just like a normal teenage mood swing. Step 8: But wait......................................................................................................... there's more If my likes are not consistent, but people say that my posts were good, does this mean that it must be the same people saying that it was good? (I cant remember if it were the same people. I post posts with some time apart and it is hard to remember who said what lol). But that's not the point. The new idea The point was, I had a new idea, one that I could expand on, which is why you are seeing a part 2 of this mini series. And if I have another crazy idea, you would see a part 3. But that's for next time, sometime in the near or far future. What if I could get the number of times each person in my friends/followers list had liked my posts? I could do this manually of course, if I were to click on more details of each post, and scrolled down, I would see who exactly liked my post. Let the Liking Games begin, where the winner has pressed that juicy like button the most. What a good way to incite friendly competition amongst friends. Instead of a potentially heated argument or a fierce running race where I would certainly be out of breath after a few futile minutes, I could simply flash the undeniable, concrete data to prove who was the real winner. Step 9: MORE NETWORK REQUESTS In order to find out which people *specifically* liked my posts, I had to follow the holy grail of data collecting, again. Scrolling through network requests to find out the source of the giant stream of data which powers everything. I'm going to decrease the level of yap for the moment, so you can enjoy this giant list of pictures showing the process of gathering data ---for the second time if you have already viewed the first article--- The old saying -- "A picture is a thousand words" is very much relevant here, so I hope you enjoyed reading the 3x1000 word academic essay. (cue round of applause). Yap machine is rebooting => beep => beep => beep Anyway Now I have all the data, I can finally arrange them into a desired format, to, ya know, easier convey the big flex across. Step 10: Roleplaying as instagram (again -_-) Same old process of using postman to test requests 😃 Then repeating the same process in python. Well somewhat similar. The feature of getting how many times a friend liked my total posts is not exactly provided in the obvious way unlike just getting likes and comments. I could just go onto a post and check the like number but in order to find who liked it, and calculating (adding it up) for all posts, is a whole different story. It chucks a request at a nicely named url endpoint 'likers', conveniently indicating what I was looking for- who liked my posts


By using the request to get likes and comments counts (from the previous article) I could get the 'pk' of each of the posts; although I like to think it means 'pookie' used in 'pookie bear' it more likely means 'primary key', used to identify record in databases. BORING but necessary.   


When looking at the data, you can see everyone that liked the post, and their usernames.


Going through the /likers endpoint for different posts (by using the ‘pk’) there are some similarities of who appears in the list. This means that one person liked multiple posts.   5.  Thus going through the all the /likers endpoint for each of the, and gathering data from the response of each endpoint and storing it in a dictionary format (key:value structure) was a good option.   6. Graphing How Many Times People Liked my Posts on Instagram

Introduction (this felt like hacking but it isn't) Going through past Instagram posts to get a short term ego boost that will dissipate in a matter of seconds I was going through my old Instagram posts trying to find how many people liked my posts. I even went through the ones in the archive (I had like 20 archived posts gathering dust). I needed an ego boost (who doesn’t like a good ego boost? If you don't, you're probably lying). And then, after a boring 5 minute period where I had a stream of random thoughts going through my head, I was like … why not graph the data of my instagram post trends? (all for the ego boost of course) There were a few benefits to this: Using intense mental gymnastics, and systematically ignoring all the possible disadvantages, I could spend much more time looking at my old likes and comments without guilt of wasting time, or seeming egocentric. Instead of like going through Instagram, I would be “analysing data visualisations”, which sounds much more productive.


I would list out all the possible disadvantages but as I said in the previous point I ignored it. Those possible disadvantages were ignored just like friction is ignored in physics problems 💀  .


Improving problem solving and creativity (this one is a no 🧠 brainer)


I can actually produce a *neat* graph -- I am highly messy drawing mathematical graphs (shaky hand and terrible coordination are my worst enemies. Getting started (not procrastinating and scrolling reels) You log onto instagram.com. The default login page asks for your username and password. You blindly give it to them to access the content that will eventually give you brainrot. The first post on the page is the source of brainrot: some random person singing slang. Your friend, at the same time also blindly gives his password and username to instagram.com. But the first post on the page was a fresh out of the oven cooking video, emanating the intense heat vibes to their eyes. Unbelievable How come he gets to see delicious food while I have to hear people chanting 'sigma' over and over again? (this actually happened) It's the same website but the content is different. The website is a dynamic website which changes content every time you reload. (imagine scrolling through mindlessly until you click the reload button. The relatable meme you were about to send to your best friend is now gone forever.) Step 1: Data doesn’t just appear on the page, it comes from somewhere How does the browser know what to display? Surely all the brainrot Instagram reels cannot be all stored in one file? Well the website needs a little help in displaying the data so it has to fetch the data from another source. Think of a dog fetching a bone from another place, to complete the full picture of a happy dog wagging its tail with a bone in its mouth. Good little doggy. Step 2: Well where does the data come from then? Snooping around the page won't get you anywhere. You have to go deeper. Here's a magic trick: go right click and inspect elements. Now you can see al the code that makes it work. A giant chunk of messy HTML blows up in your face. Not cool. How can you find all the data now? Well the interesting part is the network tab. Shows all the network requests being sent and the data being transferred. Think of it as a busy metro station with the trains as data requests, transferring goods (data) from station A (instagram servers) to station B (your browser). And then after looking through all the hard to read scripts in there, all the boring HTML, I found this interesting section Fetch/XHR: The source of the data river (probably) All external data is sent to and from servers here. By looking through the requests you can find lots of interesting stuff the website gets from servers, or what it sends. Most of the time though it looks like gibberish. Step 3: Scrolling through Instagram (productively) In order to find where the server gets the data, I had to scroll through a lot of network requests :). Forget scrolling through memes and reels, lets scroll through network requests!!!! Eventually after *hours* (or what felt like hours) of searching I found this: The chosen one. A list full of all the data on posts, including the link count, and the comment count, in convenient JSON format. Step 3: I got the data, now what Now we need to figure out how we can get the data by performing a similar request programatically. Introducing: Postman - not the one on the motorcycle (as if we see them anymore) but the application online that makes metaphorical data deliveries to your virtual mailbox. Step 4: Roleplay as instagram.com Time to pretend to be like a drama student with the roleplay. This sends a request to instagram just like how the browser sends a request for data. I had to match exactly how the request is made in the network tab; including copying what seems like the most trivial of metadata (that was a very painstaking process), into the Postman parameters in order to get the same data, my way. At this point, I could go on and on about how I got here, my thought process and everything that I have tried. But I know you didn't order a yappachino so moving on .💬 Step 5: Python Copy the python version of the postman request and boom -- you've got yourself a script that fetches instagram data :) Unfortunately the request body payload might contain sensitive data that may or may not be impacting my own account so I cannot share it here. All this script does is continually make a network request to grab Instagram data, passing different parameters (on which page/posts to search) and request body data to collect all the data about the posts. This is necessary because Instagram only grabs the data for around 12 posts at a time, this means that if someone has, say 24 posts I would have to send a request 2 times. It parses the JSON data and adds the number of likes into a list, and the number of comments into another list. Step 6: Non messy graphing It's graphing time. Set x values as post numbers, y values as likes and comments respectively and boom → Step 7: Graph done WOOHOO And there we have it. A shiny graph full of data, collected fresh right out of Instagram. It’s a perfect flex to use on friends and a nice way to look at Instagram productively. (We’re “analysing data visualisations” here people, not “scrolling reels”.) Step 2: Well where does the data come from then? Snooping around the page won't get you anywhere. You have to go deeper. Here's a magic trick: go right click and inspect elements. Now you can see al the code that makes it work. A giant chunk of messy HTML blows up in your face. Not cool. How can you find all the data now? Well the interesting part is the network tab. Shows all the network requests being sent and the data being transferred. Think of it as a busy metro station with the trains as data requests, transferring goods (data) from station A (instagram servers) to station B (your browser). I think Instagram scammers lacked friends growing up. Friendship is the fuel used to drive good-heartedness, as friends gravitate toward good hearts. The world would have fewer scammers if the world had more friends. Does the concept of 'authentic self' still hold value in the era of social media, where people often present curated versions of themselves? The “authentic self” is the miraculous blending of the mind, the spirit, and the heart. One’s authentic self will always hold value to one’s self. However, for the rest of the world, curation has corrupted the very essence of the authentic self. Those who walk the world will only know the avatar that social media presents. Eventually, no one will be authentic. Only curated. Does a fake Instagram follower have a fake life? Although no life is truly fake, the closest example may be a fake Instagram follower. Fake followers, also known as “bots,” are born out of sparks and silicone. They exist as an imitation, often a pale one, with only the goal to fool and connive. Bots can be identified quickly if one’s mind is at peace. If one’s mind is too polluted, one can see through a bot by its lack of linguistic ability and its propensity to always say what you want to hear. Simply put, the bar for people to like a social media app in 2023 is just, “not run by Elon Musk.” That’s why some people rekindled their hope for Twitter after learning that its new CEO will be , who is very respected in the advertising industry. You also have the option to follow anyone whom you already followed on Instagram, even before they join Threads. That way, once they do join, you would already be one of their followers. A “pre-follow” if you will. 1,4 billions users From there, it’s basically Twitter, without the baggage and all the added features. But at first glance, this is one of the clearest signs of Musk feeling threatened by this app in a real way that he never did with Mastodon or BlueSky (cofounded by Jack Dorsey, who remains a Twitter/X Corp ). The app will probably pass 100M users any day now. But a large percentage of the userbase will probably leave after the initial honeymoon period. What they do then, how careful they are with users data & integration (under extreme scrutiny from both regulators and reporters), what features they will add or kill, and most importantly, what users will they be able to convert to long term users, will determine the future of this app, and by extension, the legacy of Zuck. For now, I know that I have nothing to lose by posting on Threads directly to my Instagram stories, as I’m already too addicted to Instagram.
