This process has been applied to summarization (Ziegler et al., 2019; Stiennon et al., 2020; Wu et al., 2021a), answering questions with long-form answers using text retrieved from the web (Nakano et al., 2021b; Menick et al., 2022), generating engaging responses in a dialogue settings (Thoppilan et al., 2022; Cohen et al., 2022) and following human instructions (Kojima et al., 2021; Suhr & Artzi, 2022; Kim et al., 2023). Aligning Language Models To Human Preferences However, the standard RLHF setup commonly addressed in prior work assumes a reward model that accounts only for average annotator preference, i.e., the fact that different users may desire different outputs, even for the same prompt, is ignored Casper et al. (2023). Individual preferences can vary not only on aesthetic axes, but also on semantics. For example, Santurkar et al. (2023) use public opinion polling to show that “default” LLM preferences vary in their degree of expressed-opinion alignment with different average opinions among demographic groups.[2] Kirk et al. (2023) defines a taxonomy and policy framework for the alignment of LLMs with personalized feedback. While Wu et al. (2023) performs fine-grained RLHF which is very similar in spirit and allows personalization, our work develops MORL algorithms for scenarios where there are conflicting preferences, not only orthogonal objectives. In this work, we propose formulating LLM personalization as a MORL problem, which was typically studied in decision-making tasks (Hayes et al., 2022) that aims to tackle the problem of simply optimizing by a single, scalar, additive reward function (Sutton & Barto, 2018), which possesses many limitations such as (1) suboptimal solutions due to lack of representation (Hayes et al., 2022), (2) lack of explainability of distinct objectives, and (3) ensuring fair outcomes for multiple participants (Vamplew et al., 2018; Siddique et al., 2020). Multi-objective Reinforcement Learning (MORL) Previous work has aimed to alleviate these problems through novel MORL methods (Van Moffaert et al., 2013; Van Moffaert & Nowe´, 2014; Yang et al., 2019; Xu et al., 2020). Other work aims to solve complex problems such as water management, military purchasing, wind farm control, etc. (Hayes et al., 2022) by converting the single-objective RL problem into a MORL problem. In this work, we convert the problem of aligning LLMs to human preferences into a MORL problem to (1) provide a more optimal solution for each individual, (2) allow users to dynamically choose the distinct objectives they want to optimize, and (3) ensure fairness by allowing preferences that may be in the long-tail to be integrated. Personalization in Natural Language Processing (NLP) has mainly been focused on creating personalized dialogue agents (Zhang et al., 2018; Mazare et al. ´ , 2018; Zheng et al., 2019; Wu et al., 2021b; Xu et al., 2022), where the task is to create chitchat agents that are engaging with distinct personas based on user profile (e.g. gender, age, residence, etc.) or past user history data (e.g. Reddit posts, etc.). Another line of work (Salemi et al., 2023) leverages personalized information to boost performance on specific tasks such as review generation (Li & Tuzhilin, 2019), recipe generation (Majumder et al., 2019), and headline generation (Ao et al., 2021). This line of work requires model providers to make better models utilizing the personal information of the user. In our work, we propose a framework that allows users to choose which preference the language model should prefer, essentially giving control to the user. Personalization in Natural Language Processing Recent work has shown that performing weighted linear interpolation of model parameters leads to the composition of each model ability (Li et al., 2022; Wortsman et al., 2022b;a; Don-Yehiya et al., 2022; Huang et al., 2023). This line of work has led to many interesting applications of model merging such as composing the abilities of expert models that perform different tasks (Ilharco et al., 2022; Jang et al., 2023) and introducing language-specific modules for growing the total capacity of multilingual LMs (Pfeiffer et al., 2022). Parameter Merging Most recently, Rame et al. (2023) proposed to merge policy models that were trained to perform specific tasks such as question answering and summarization using proxy reward models. While they mostly deal with reward models trained on the same data, our proposed MORL methods are an extension of this work that actually deals with diverse reward models trained on multifaceted human feedback to show compositional abilities through parameter merging rather than just ensembling. Related Work Our work was inspired by a previous investigation of selfattention layers which identified sufficient conditions such that they can perform convolution when equipped with relative positional encodings (Cordonnier et al., 2020; Andreoli, 2019). Rather than relying on relative encodings, we here show how soft-masking can be used to learn sample efficiently more general input transformations, such as rotation, reflection, and scaling. To the extent of our knowledge, the group-action learning problem has not been explicitly and generally formulated in previous work. That being said, many previous works have focused on specific instances, such as learning to sort (Graves et al., 2014; Reed & De Freitas, 2015; Li et al., 2020) by selecting an element of the permutation group Sn, docking/folding by roto-translating objects according to an action in the special Euclidean group SE(3) (Sverrisson et al., 2022; Stark et al. ¨ , 2022; Jumper et al., 2021), and graph spectrum generation where the learned actions belong to the Stiefel manifold (Martinkus et al., 2022). Our work is similar in spirit to recent efforts in neurosymbolic visual reasoning (Johnson et al., 2017b;a; Goyal et al., 2017; Mao et al., 2019; Higgins et al., 2018) and in the area of enhancing machine-learning models with the ability to reason over structured data (Atzeni et al., 2021; Murugesan et al., 2021a; Atzeni & Atzori, 2018; Murugesan et al., 2021b). Many approaches based on attention mechanisms have been proposed in the past few years (Hudson & Manning, 2018; 2019). Our work differentiates from previous lines of research in that we aim to learn basic geometric reasoning in a sample-efficient way, rather than modeling relationships between high-level concepts. Finally, some recent works came to our same conclusion on the advantages of using attention masks to incorporate prior knowledge in neural networks. As an example, Yan et al. (2020) focus on the task of learning subroutines (e.g., sorting algorithms) and use a CNN to generate an attention mask for a Transformer encoder. Similarly, Sartran et al. (2022) used precomputed attention masks to incorporate syntactic biases in language models.

The great leaps forward in civilization have all come on the back of advancements in communication. From the evolution of human language and early cave paintings to Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press, through to the age of telecommunications, and, ultimately, the internet. Moving from physical messages to real-time communication (RTC) via telephony enabled our interactions to become faster, more efficient, more scalable, and, most importantly, more interpersonal. The development of the internet is now widely accepted to be falling into distinct phases, which we’ve come to know as Web1, Web2, and Web3. Web1 and Web2 are often defined through the lens of communications, with Web1 featuring static content delivery systems, while Web2 transformed the way we interact online with the advent of social media and video streaming. WebRTC, a defining component of Web2, enabled global business and commerce to continue at the onset of the pandemic in 2020. The emergence of Web3 is still underway, and so far, it’s fair to say that the major impact of Web3 has been more focused on finance than communication. Four years after the pandemic began, WebRTC is still firmly rooted in the Web2 space. Stagnating Problems Our online meetings and interactions take place predominantly using services like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet, alongside more social-oriented offerings such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Facebook Messenger. However, there isn’t much to differentiate these products in terms of user experience, and as centralized offerings, they all share similar deficiencies. “ ” came to describe the exhaustion that results from spending hours staring at 2D images of coworkers onscreen. Zoom fatigue Or, if you’re the host, hoping that the screen doesn’t freeze or the audio drops out due to performance and connectivity issues. The practice known as “ ” where unwanted participants gatecrash meetings, highlights just one of the privacy and covert monitoring issues with Web2 RTC services. Zoom bombing, The fact that they are run on centralized servers also creates a potential point of failure, as well as limiting scalability. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, the extractive model of centralized ownership simply doesn’t incentivize change or improvement beyond ensuring that enough customers continue to pay their monthly subscriptions. Policies and practices often work in service of profit but against the interests of the user, such as data harvesting or intrusive ads. Changing the Paradigm The emergence of Web3 offers a chance for a different model; one that’s closer in spirit to the evolution of communication throughout history, where people have sought to make information more accessible and available to the many. Decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) refers to the segment of Web3 where projects harness the power of decentralized networks to create a more robust, scalable, and people-centric infrastructure that can support the next evolution of the Internet. The centralized infrastructure model is based on companies generating or buying up resources such as bandwidth, file storage, or connectivity and reselling them at a profit using any of the extractive business practices covered above. In the DePIN model, individuals and entities can pool their resources into a decentralized node-based infrastructure network so it can be sold ad-hoc and on-demand to anyone who needs it at a far lower cost. Entities that contribute resources to the network are rewarded for their contribution, incentivizing further participation. Ultimately, the user benefits from a superior experience thanks to a more scalable and private network that is better designed for growth and improvement. Depending on the type of project, running a node for these networks doesn’t necessarily involve any high technological overheads. However, it is a paradigm shift. Moving from a top-down economic model to a peer-to-peer value creation ecosystem based on shared social consensus requires education and a change in mindset for mainstream users and enterprises unfamiliar with the Web3 model. But the shift is happening. If you were to ask anyone whether they preferred the original Ace Attorney trilogy or the Apollo Justice trilogy, there’s a very good chance they would say the former. The first 3 games were so amazing that they were extremely hard to follow up. However, the Apollo Justice games (which consist of Ace Attorney 4,5, and 6) are still very good games, and I would encourage anyone who hasn’t played them yet to stop reading this article immediately and play them this instant. They’re filled to the brim with interesting cases, villains, and brand-new protagonists such as Athena Cykes and, of course, Apollo Justice himself. So today, I’m doing the near-impossible and choosing the top 5 Apollo Justice cases. Warning: Spoilers Ahead. The 5 Best Cases From the Apollo Justice Trilogy 5. Turnabout for Tomorrow 5-5 4. Turnabout Revolution 6-5 3. Turnabout Trump 4-1 2. Turnabout Succession 4-4 1. Turnabout Storyteller 6-4 5. Turnabout for Tomorrow 5-5 Throughout the fifth game, Dual Destinies, we know that something traumatic happened to newcomer Athena Cykes. She was keeping a big secret, and in Turnabout for Tomorrow, everything gets revealed. Cykes’ past, prosecutor Simon Blackquill’s connection to all of it, and the mysterious murderer of 2 people all come to light. Turnabout for Tomorrow is the final case of Dual Destinies, and it serves as a fitting end that ties up all the loose ends in a neat bow. The case also has an incredibly shocking twist that I did not see coming. 4. Turnabout Revolution 6-5 Speaking of wrapping things up and shocking twists, the last case in Spirit of Justice brings that in spades. The final case in every Ace Attorney game always goes hard, but probably none so than Turnabout Revolution. It’s long with twist after twist that you don’t see coming, and just when you think you have it figured out, they throw another twist at you. But apart from the craziness of the case, another reason why Turnabout Revolution is great is because it provides closure for Apollo Justice. The once very nervous rookie defense attorney is finally allowed to spread his wings and become a new and improved man. 3. Turnabout Trump 4-1 Shocking twists are usually reserved for the end of the game, but in Apollo Justice, they come out swinging with them. Apollo and his mentor, Kristoph Gavin, have to defend this strange, disheveled man who is accused of murder. Little does Apollo know that their client is the former Ace Attorney himself, Phoenix Wright. And if that wasn’t crazy enough, it turns out that the real murderer was helping us all along. That’s right, in the end, our friend and mentor Gavin is revealed to be the mastermind behind the murder. Apollo Justice has one of the strongest starts in the history of the series, and that’s why it’s one of the best cases in the Apollo Justice trilogy. 2. Turnabout Succession 4-4 When we meet Phoenix Wright at the beginning of the game, we know that he’s not the same man that we last saw in Trials and Tribulations. He lost his reputation, and most importantly, he lost his job as a defense attorney; he was disbarred. But we didn’t really know what happened until Turnabout Succession when everything was revealed. But not only do we see what happened, we experience it ourselves. We play as Phoenix Wright during his last trial when he’s framed for forging evidence, we find out who was behind it all, and we see Apollo Justice rise to the occasion in the present day. And events that we had no idea were important finally make their connections known. For example, the events and characters in cases 4-1 and 4-2 are revealed to actually be a huge part of the story, and it retroactively makes those cases that much better. 1. Turnabout Storyteller 6-4 I love the final cases in Ace Attorney games because it is the culmination of the overall story that they plant from the very beginning. However, I love Turnabout Storyteller for the exact opposite reason. This case has Athena Cykes defending a young man with the help of prosecutor Simon Blackquill. Case 6-4 has nothing to do with the overarching story, none of these characters will probably appear again in future installments, and in the grand scheme of things that were currently going on in the Ace Attorney world, it didn’t seem that big or urgent. But that’s what’s so great about it. The judicial system didn’t ride on the outcome of the case, nor did an entire kingdom’s future hang in the balance. It’s a simple story about young up-and-comer Athena trying to clear somebody of murder, without the help of Phoenix Wright or Apollo Justice. It’s just her, Widget, and Blackquill. And it turned out to be amazing. It’s relatively obvious who the killer is from the get-go, but I didn’t care. The story and the characters were intriguing, and best of all, the chemistry between Athena and Blackquill was amazing. Athena, the ambitious and eager student vs Blackquill as the reluctant but helpful mentor. This case is so good that it’s by far my favorite in the Apollo Justice trilogy, and I think this single case proves that Athena Cykes is an interesting character enough to warrant her being the star of her own game.           the Mansion House in honor of Mr. Clemens. I do assure you that I am not so dishonest as I look. I have been so busy trying to rehabilitate my honor about that Ascot Cup that I have had no time to prepare a speech. I was not so honest in former days as I am now, but I have always been reasonably honest. Well, you know how a man is influenced by his surroundings. Once upon a time I went to a public meeting where the oratory of a charitable worker so worked on my feelings that, in common with others, I would have dropped something substantial in the hat—if it had come round at that moment. The speaker had the power of putting those vivid pictures before one. We were all affected. That was the moment for the hat. I would have put two hundred dollars in. Before he had finished I could have put in four hundred dollars. I felt I could have filled up a blank check—with somebody else’s name—and dropped it in. Well, now, another speaker got up, and in fifteen minutes damped my spirit; and during the speech of the third speaker all my enthusiasm went away. When at last the hat came round I dropped in ten cents—and took out twenty-five. I came over here to get the honorary degree from Oxford, and I would have encompassed the seven seas for an honor like that—the greatest honor that has ever fallen to my share. I am grateful to Oxford for conferring that honor upon me, and I am sure my country appreciates it, because first and foremost it is an honor to my country. Literary criticism in the present day has become a profession,—but it has ceased to be an art. Its object is no longer that of proving that certain literary work is good and other literary work is bad, in accordance with rules which the critic is able to define. English criticism at present rarely even pretends to go so far as this. It attempts, in the first place, to tell the public whether a book be or be not worth public attention; and, in the second place, so to describe the purport of the work as to enable those who have not time or inclination for reading it to feel that by a short cut they can become acquainted with its contents. Both these objects, if fairly well carried out, are salutary. Though the critic may not be a profound judge himself; though not unfrequently he be a young man making his first literary attempts, with tastes and judgment still unfixed, yet he probably has a conscience in the matter, and would not have been selected for that work had he not shown some aptitude for it. Though he may be not the best possible guide to the undiscerning, he will be better than no guide at all. Real substantial criticism must, from its nature, be costly, and that which the public wants should at any rate be cheap. Advice is given to many thousands, which, though it may not be the best advice possible, is better than no advice at all. Then that description of the work criticised, that compressing of the much into very little,—which is the work of many modern critics or reviewers,—does enable many to know something of what is being said, who without it would know nothing. I do not think it is incumbent on me at present to name periodicals in which this work is well done, and to make complaints of others by which it is scamped. I should give offence, and might probably be unjust. But I think I may certainly say that as some of these periodicals are certainly entitled to great praise for the manner in which the work is done generally, so are others open to very severe censure,—and that the praise and that the censure are chiefly due on behalf of one virtue and its opposite vice. It is not critical ability that we have a right to demand, or its absence that we are bound to deplore. Critical ability for the price we pay is not attainable. It is a faculty not peculiar to Englishmen, and when displayed is very frequently not appreciated. But that critics should be honest we have a right to demand, and critical dishonesty we are bound to expose. If the writer will tell us what he thinks, though his thoughts be absolutely vague and useless, we can forgive him; but when he tells us what he does not think, actuated either by friendship or by animosity, then there should be no pardon for him. This is the sin in modern English criticism of which there is most reason to complain. It is a lamentable fact that men and women lend themselves to this practice who are neither vindictive nor ordinarily dishonest. It has become "the custom of the trade," under the veil of which excuse so many tradesmen justify their malpractices! When a struggling author learns that so much has been done for A by the , so much for B by the , and, again, so much for C by that powerful metropolitan organ the , and is told also that A and B and C have been favoured through personal interest, he also goes to work among the editors, or the editors' wives,—or perhaps, if he cannot reach their wives, with their wives' first or second cousins. When once the feeling has come upon an editor or a critic that he may allow himself to be influenced by other considerations than the duty he owes to the public, all sense of critical or of editorial honesty falls from him at once. . In a very short time that editorial honesty becomes ridiculous to himself. It is for other purpose that he wields the power; and when he is told what is his duty, and what should be his conduct, the preacher of such doctrine seems to him to be quixotic. "Where have you lived, my friend, for the last twenty years," he says in spirit, if not in word, "that you come out now with such stuff as old-fashioned as this?" And thus dishonesty begets dishonesty, till dishonesty seems to be beautiful. How nice to be good-natured! How glorious to assist struggling young authors, especially if the young author be also a pretty woman! How gracious to oblige a friend! Then the motive, though still pleasing, departs further from the border of what is good. In what way can the critic better repay the hospitality of his wealthy literary friend than by good-natured criticism,—or more certainly ensure for himself a continuation of hospitable favours? Barsetshire Gazette Dillsborough Herald Evening Pulpit Facilis descensus Averni Some years since a critic of the day, a gentleman well known then in literary circles, showed me the manuscript of a book recently published,—the work of a popular author. It was handsomely bound, and was a valuable and desirable possession. It had just been given to him by the author as an acknowledgment for a laudatory review in one of the leading journals of the day. As I was expressly asked whether I did not regard such a token as a sign of grace both in the giver and in the receiver, I said that I thought it should neither have been given nor have been taken. My theory was repudiated with scorn, and I was told that I was strait-laced, visionary, and impracticable! In all that the damage did not lie in the fact of that one present, but in the feeling on the part of the critic that his office was not debased by the acceptance of presents from those whom he criticised. This man was a professional critic, bound by his contract with certain employers to review such books as were sent to him. How could he, when he had received a valuable present for praising one book, censure another by the same author? While I write this I well know that what I say, if it be ever noticed at all, will be taken as a straining at gnats, as a pretence of honesty, or at any rate as an exaggeration of scruples. I have said the same thing before, and have been ridiculed for saying it. But none the less am I sure that English literature generally is suffering much under this evil. All those who are struggling for success have forced upon them the idea that their strongest efforts should be made in touting for praise. Those who are not familiar with the lives of authors will hardly believe how low will be the forms which their struggles will take:—how little presents will be sent to men who write little articles; how much flattery may be expended even on the keeper of a circulating library; with what profuse and distant genuflexions approaches are made to the outside railing of the temple which contains within it the great thunderer of some metropolitan periodical publication! The evil here is not only that done to the public when interested counsel is given to them, but extends to the debasement of those who have at any rate considered themselves fit to provide literature for the public. I am satisfied that the remedy for this evil must lie in the conscience and deportment of authors themselves. If once the feeling could be produced that it is disgraceful for an author to ask for praise,—and demands for praise are, I think, disgraceful in every walk of life,—the practice would gradually fall into the hands only of the lowest, and that which is done only by the lowest soon becomes despicable even to them. The sin, when perpetuated with unflagging labour, brings with it at best very poor reward. That work of running after critics, editors, publishers, the keepers of circulating libraries, and their clerks, is very hard, and must be very disagreeable. He who does it must feel himself to be dishonoured,—or she. It may perhaps help to sell an edition, but can never make an author successful. I think it may be laid down as a golden rule in literature that there should be no intercourse at all between an author and his critic. The critic, as critic, should not know his author, nor the author, as author, his critic. As censure should beget no anger, so should praise beget no gratitude. The young author should feel that criticisms fall upon him as dew or hail from heaven,—which, as coming from heaven, man accepts as fate. Praise let the author try to obtain by wholesome effort; censure let him avoid, if possible, by care and industry. But when they come, let him take them as coming from some source which he cannot influence, and with which he should not meddle. I know no more disagreeable trouble into which an author may plunge himself than of a quarrel with his critics, or any more useless labour than that of answering them. It is wise to presume, at any rate, that the reviewer has simply done his duty, and has spoken of the book according to the dictates of his conscience. Nothing can be gained by combating the reviewer's opinion. If the book which he has disparaged be good, his judgment will be condemned by the praise of others; if bad, his judgment will be confirmed by others. Or if, unfortunately, the criticism of the day be in so evil a condition generally that such ultimate truth cannot be expected, the author may be sure that his efforts made on behalf of his own book will not set matters right. If injustice be done him, let him bear it. To do so is consonant with the dignity of the position which he ought to assume. To shriek, and scream, and sputter, to threaten actions, and to swear about the town that he has been belied and defamed in that he has been accused of bad grammar or a false metaphor, of a dull chapter, or even of a borrowed heroine, will leave on the minds of the public nothing but a sense of irritated impotence. If, indeed, there should spring from an author's work any assertion by a critic injurious to the author's honour, if the author be accused of falsehood or of personal motives which are discreditable to him, then, indeed, he may be bound to answer the charge. It is hoped, however, that he may be able to do so with clean hands, or he will so stir the mud in the pool as to come forth dirtier than he went into it. I have lived much among men by whom the English criticism of the day has been vehemently abused. I have heard it said that to the public it is a false guide, and that to authors it is never a trustworthy Mentor. I do not concur in this wholesale censure. There is, of course, criticism and criticism. There are at this moment one or two periodicals to which both public and authors may safely look for guidance, though there are many others from which no spark of literary advantage may be obtained. But it is well that both public and authors should know what is the advantage which they have a right to expect. There have been critics,—and there probably will be again, though the circumstances of English literature do not tend to produce them,—with power sufficient to entitle them to speak with authority. These great men have declared, , that such a book has been so far good and so far bad, or that it has been altogether good or altogether bad;—and the world has believed them. When making such assertions they have given their reasons, explained their causes, and have carried conviction. Very great reputations have been achieved by such critics, but not without infinite study and the labour of many years. tanquam ex cathedra Such are not the critics of the day, of whom we are now speaking. In the literary world as it lives at present some writer is selected for the place of critic to a newspaper, generally some young writer, who for so many shillings a column shall review whatever book is sent to him and express an opinion,—reading the book through for the purpose, if the amount of honorarium as measured with the amount of labour will enable him to do so. A labourer must measure his work by his pay or he cannot live. From criticism such as this must for the most part be, the general reader has no right to expect philosophical analysis, or literary judgment on which confidence may be placed. But he probably may believe that the books praised will be better than the books censured, and that those which are praised by periodicals which never censure are better worth his attention than those which are not noticed. And readers will also find that by devoting an hour or two on Saturday to the criticisms of the week, they will enable themselves to have an opinion about the books of the day. The knowledge so acquired will not be great, nor will that little be lasting; but it adds something to the pleasure of life to be able to talk on subjects of which others are speaking; and the man who has sedulously gone through the literary notices in the and the may perhaps be justified in thinking himself as well able to talk about the new book as his friend who has brought that new book on the , and who, not improbably, obtained his information from the same source.           Institute by Booker Washington, Mr. Choate presided, and in
          introducing Mr. Clemens made fun of him because he made play
          his work, and that when he worked hardest he did so lying in
          bed. I came here in the responsible capacity of policeman to watch Mr. Choate. This is an occasion of grave and serious importance, and it seems necessary for me to be present, so that if he tried to work off any statement that required correction, reduction, refutation, or exposure, there would be a tried friend of the public to protect the house. He has not made one statement whose veracity fails to tally exactly with my own standard. I have never seen a person improve so. This makes me thankful and proud of a country that can produce such men—two such men. And all in the same country. We can’t be with you always; we are passing away, and then—well, everything will have to stop, I reckon. It is a sad thought. But in spirit I shall still be with you. Choate, too—if he can. Every born American among the eighty millions, let his creed or destitution of creed be what it may, is indisputably a Christian—to this degree that his moral constitution is Christian. There are two kinds of Christian morals, one private and the other public. These two are so distinct, so unrelated, that they are no more akin to each other than are archangels and politicians. During three hundred and sixty-three days in the year the American citizen is true to his Christian private morals, and keeps undefiled the nation’s character at its best and highest; then in the other two days of the year he leaves his Christian private morals at home and carries his Christian public morals to the tax office and the polls, and does the best he can to damage and undo his whole year’s faithful and righteous work. Without a blush he will vote for an unclean boss if that boss is his party’s Moses, without compunction he will vote against the best man in the whole land if he is on the other ticket. Every year in a number of cities and States he helps put corrupt men in office, whereas if he would but throw away his Christian public morals, and carry his Christian private morals to the polls, he could promptly purify the public service and make the possession of office a high and honorable distinction. Once a year he lays aside his Christian private morals and hires a ferry-boat and piles up his bonds in a warehouse in New Jersey for three days, and gets out his Christian public morals and goes to the tax office and holds up his hands and swears he wishes he may never—never if he’s got a cent in the world, so help him. The next day the list appears in the papers—a column and a quarter of names, in fine print, and every man in the list a billionaire and member of a couple of churches. I know all those people. I have friendly, social, and criminal relations with the whole lot of them. They never miss a sermon when they are so’s to be around, and they never miss swearing-off day, whether they are so’s to be around or not. I used to be an honest man. I am crumbling. No—I have crumbled. When they assessed me at $75,000 a fortnight ago I went out and tried to borrow the money, and couldn’t; then when I found they were letting a whole crop of millionaires live in New York at a third of the price they were charging me I was hurt, I was indignant, and said: “This is the last feather. I am not going to run this town all by myself.” In that moment—in that memorable moment—I began to crumble. In fifteen minutes the disintegration was complete. In fifteen minutes I had become just a mere moral sand-pile; and I lifted up my hand along with those seasoned and experienced deacons and swore off every rag of personal property I’ve got in the world, clear down to cork leg, glass eye, and what is left of my wig. Those tax officers were moved; they were profoundly moved. They had long been accustomed to seeing hardened old grafters act like that, and they could endure the spectacle; but they were expecting better things of me, a chartered, professional moralist, and they were saddened. I fell visibly in their respect and esteem, and I should have fallen in my own, except that I had already struck bottom, and there wasn’t any place to fall to. At Tuskeegee they will jump to misleading conclusions from insufficient evidence, along with Doctor Parkhurst, and they will deceive the student with the superstition that no gentleman ever swears. Look at those good millionaires; aren’t they gentlemen? Well, they swear. Only once in a year, maybe, but there’s enough bulk to it to make up for the lost time. And do they lose anything by it? No, they don’t; they save enough in three minutes to support the family seven years. When they swear, do we shudder? No—unless they say “damn!” Then we do. It shrivels us all up. Yet we ought not to feel so about it, because we all swear—everybody. Including the ladies. Including Doctor Parkhurst, that strong and brave and excellent citizen, but superficially educated. For it is not the word that is the sin, it is the spirit back of the word. When an irritated lady says “oh!” the spirit back of it is “damn!” and that is the way it is going to be recorded against her. It always makes me so sorry when I hear a lady swear like that. But if she says “damn,” and says it in an amiable, nice way, it isn’t going to be recorded at all. The idea that no gentleman ever swears is all wrong; he can swear and still be a gentleman if he does it in a nice and, benevolent and affectionate way. The historian, John Fiske, whom I knew well and loved, was a spotless and most noble and upright Christian gentleman, and yet he swore once. Not exactly that, maybe; still, he—but I will tell you about it. One day, when he was deeply immersed in his work, his wife came in, much moved and profoundly distressed, and said: “I am sorry to disturb you, John, but I must, for this is a serious matter, and needs to be attended to at once.” Then, lamenting, she brought a grave accusation against their little son. She said: “He has been saying his Aunt Mary is a fool and his Aunt Martha is a damned fool.” Mr. Fiske reflected upon the matter a minute, then said: “Oh, well, it’s about the distinction I should make between them myself.” Mr. Washington, I beg you to convey these teachings to your great and prosperous and most beneficent educational institution, and add them to the prodigal mental and moral riches wherewith you equip your fortunate proteges for the struggle of life.
