Troubleshooting In Debian, as in life, things don’t always work as you might expect or want them to. While Debian has a well-deserved reputation for being rock-solid and stable, sometimes its reaction to your commands may be unexpected. Here, we try to shed some light on the most common problems that people encounter. B.1 Common Difficulties This section provides some tips for handling some of the most frequently experienced difficulties users have encountered. B.1.1 Working with Strangely-Named Files Occasionally, you may find that you have accidentally created a file that contains a character not normally found in a filename. Examples of this could include a space, a leading hyphen, or maybe a quotation mark. You may find that accessing, removing, or renaming these files can be difficult. Here are some tips to help you: ◼ Try enclosing the filename in single quotation marks, like this: less ’File With Spaces.txt’ ◼ Insert a ./ before the filename: less ’./-a strange file.txt’ ◼ Use wildcards: less File?With?Spaces.txt ◼ Use a backslash before each unusual character: less File\ With\ Spaces.txt B.1.2 Printing One common source of trouble is the printing system in Debian. Traditionally, printing has been a powerful but complex aspect of Unix. However, Debian makes it easier. An easy way to print is with the package called magicfilter. magicfilter will ask you a few questions about your printer and then configure it for you. If you are having troubles printing, give magicfilter a try. B.1.3 X Problems Many questions revolve around X. Here are some general tips for things to try if you are having difficulties setting up the X Window system: ◼ For mouse problems, run XF86Setup and try the PS/2, Microsoft, MouseSystems, and Logitech options. Most mice will fit under one of these. Also, the device for your mouse is /dev/psaux for PS/2 mice and a serial port such as /dev/ttyS0 for serial mice. ◼ If you don’t know what video chipset you have, try running SuperProbe; it can often figure this out for you. ◼ If your screen doesn’t have a lot of color, try selecting a different video card or tell X how much video RAM you have. ◼ If your screen goes blank or has unreadable text when you start X, you probably selected an incorrect refresh rate. Go back to XF86Setup or xf86config and double-check those settings. ◼ xvidtune can help if the image on the screen is shifted too far to the left or right, is too high or low, or is too narrow or wide. ◼ xdpyinfo can give information about a running X session. ◼ XF86Setup can set your default color depth. ◼ You can select your default window manager by editing /etc/X11/window-managers. ◼ /var/log/xdm-errors can contain useful information if you are having trouble getting xdm to start properly. As a final reminder, try the XF86Setup or xf86config tools for configuring or reconfiguring X for your hardware. B.2 Troubleshooting the Boot Process If you have problems during the boot process, such as the kernel hangs during the boot process, the kernel doesn’t recognize peripherals you actually have, or drives are not recognized properly, the first things to check are the boot parameters. They can be found by pressing F1 when booting from the rescue disk. Often, problems can be solved by removing add-ons and peripherals and then booting again. Internal modems, sound cards, and Plug-n-Play devices are especially problematic. Tecras and other notebooks, and some non-portables fail to flush the cache when switching on the A20 gate, which is provoked by bzImage kernels but not by zImage kernels. If your computer suffers from this problem, you’ll see a message during boot saying A20 gating failed. In this case, you’ll have to use the ‘tecra’ boot images. If you still have problems, please submit a bug report. Send an email to submit@bugs.debian.org. You include the following as the first lines of the email: must Package: boot-floppies Version: version Make sure you fill in version with the version of the boot-floppies set that you used. If you don’t know the version, use the date you downloaded the floppies, and include the distribution you got them from (e.g., “stable” or “frozen”). You should also include the following information in your bug report: i386 architecture your general hardware vendor and model model amount of RAM memory SCSI host adapter, if any scsi CD-ROM model and interface type, i.e., ATAPI cd-rom network interface card, if any network card details of any PCMCIA devices pcmcia Depending on the nature of the bug, it also might be useful to report the disk model, the disk capacity, and the model of video card. In the bug report, describe what the problem is, including the last visible kernel messages in the event of a kernel hang. Describe the steps you performed that put the system into the problem state. I’ve got my patchwork scissors in my apron pocket fortunately,” said Anne. She solemnly clipped one of Diana’s curls. “Fare thee well, my beloved friend. Henceforth we must be as strangers though living side by side. But my heart will ever be faithful to thee.” Anne stood and watched Diana out of sight, mournfully waving her hand to the latter whenever she turned to look back. Then she returned to the house, not a little consoled for the time being by this romantic parting. “It is all over,” she informed Marilla. “I shall never have another friend. I’m really worse off than ever before, for I haven’t Katie Maurice and Violetta now. And even if I had it wouldn’t be the same. Somehow, little dream girls are not satisfying after a real friend. Diana and I had such an affecting farewell down by the spring. It will be sacred in my memory forever. I used the most pathetic language I could think of and said ‘thou’ and ‘thee.’ ‘Thou’ and ‘thee’ seem so much more romantic than ‘you.’ Diana gave me a lock of her hair and I’m going to sew it up in a little bag and wear it around my neck all my life. Please see that it is buried with me, for I don’t believe I’ll live very long. Perhaps when she sees me lying cold and dead before her Mrs. Barry may feel remorse for what she has done and will let Diana come to my funeral.” “I don’t think there is much fear of your dying of grief as long as you can talk, Anne,” said Marilla unsympathetically. The following Monday Anne surprised Marilla by coming down from her room with her basket of books on her arm and hip and her lips primmed up into a line of determination. “I’m going back to school,” she announced. “That is all there is left in life for me, now that my friend has been ruthlessly torn from me. In school I can look at her and muse over days departed.” “You’d better muse over your lessons and sums,” said Marilla, concealing her delight at this development of the situation. “If you’re going back to school I hope we’ll hear no more of breaking slates over people’s heads and such carryings on. Behave yourself and do just what your teacher tells you.” “I’ll try to be a model pupil,” agreed Anne dolefully. “There won’t be much fun in it, I expect. Mr. Phillips said Minnie Andrews was a model pupil and there isn’t a spark of imagination or life in her. She is just dull and poky and never seems to have a good time. But I feel so depressed that perhaps it will come easy to me now. I’m going round by the road. I couldn’t bear to go by the Birch Path all alone. I should weep bitter tears if I did.” Anne was welcomed back to school with open arms. Her imagination had been sorely missed in games, her voice in the singing and her dramatic ability in the perusal aloud of books at dinner hour. Ruby Gillis smuggled three blue plums over to her during testament reading; Ella May MacPherson gave her an enormous yellow pansy cut from the covers of a floral catalogue—a species of desk decoration much prized in Avonlea school. Sophia Sloane offered to teach her a perfectly elegant new pattern of knit lace, so nice for trimming aprons. Katie Boulter gave her a perfume bottle to keep slate water in, and Julia Bell copied carefully on a piece of pale pink paper scalloped on the edges the following effusion: “TO ANNE “When twilight drops her curtain down And pins it with a star Remember that you have a friend Though she may wander far.” “It’s so nice to be appreciated,” sighed Anne rapturously to Marilla that night. The girls were not the only scholars who “appreciated” her. When Anne went to her seat after dinner hour—she had been told by Mr. Phillips to sit with the model Minnie Andrews—she found on her desk a big luscious “strawberry apple.” Anne caught it up all ready to take a bite when she remembered that the only place in Avonlea where strawberry apples grew was in the old Blythe orchard on the other side of the Lake of Shining Waters. Anne dropped the apple as if it were a red-hot coal and ostentatiously wiped her fingers on her handkerchief. The apple lay untouched on her desk until the next morning, when little Timothy Andrews, who swept the school and kindled the fire, annexed it as one of his perquisites. Charlie Sloane’s slate pencil, gorgeously bedizened with striped red and yellow paper, costing two cents where ordinary pencils cost only one, which he sent up to her after dinner hour, met with a more favorable reception. Anne was graciously pleased to accept it and rewarded the donor with a smile which exalted that infatuated youth straightway into the seventh heaven of delight and caused him to make such fearful errors in his dictation that Mr. Phillips kept him in after school to rewrite it. But as, The Cæsar’s pageant shorn of Brutus’ bust Did but of Rome’s best son remind her more, so the marked absence of any tribute or recognition from Diana Barry who was sitting with Gertie Pye embittered Anne’s little triumph. “Diana might just have smiled at me once, I think,” she mourned to Marilla that night. But the next morning a note most fearfully and wonderfully twisted and folded, and a small parcel were passed across to Anne. “Dear Anne, ran the former, “Mother says I’m not to play with you or talk to you even in school. It isn’t my fault and don’t be cross at me, because I love you as much as ever. I miss you awfully to tell all my secrets to and I don’t like Gertie Pye one bit. I made you one of the new bookmarkers out of red tissue paper. They are awfully fashionable now and only three girls in school know how to make them. Minnie Andrews is a very nice little girl—although she has no imagination—but after having been Diana’s busum friend I cannot be Minnie’s. Perhaps Anne caught something of the “model” spirit from Minnie Andrews; at least she got on very well with Mr. Phillips thenceforth. She flung herself into her studies heart and soul, determined not to be outdone in any class by Gilbert Blythe. The rivalry between them was soon apparent; it was entirely good natured on Gilbert’s side; but it is much to be feared that the same thing cannot be said of Anne, who had certainly an unpraiseworthy tenacity for holding grudges. She was as intense in her hatreds as in her loves. She would not stoop to admit that she meant to rival Gilbert in schoolwork, because that would have been to acknowledge his existence which Anne persistently ignored; but the rivalry was there and honors fluctuated between them. Now Gilbert was head of the spelling class; now Anne, with a toss of her long red braids, spelled him down. One morning Gilbert had all his sums done correctly and had his name written on the blackboard on the roll of honor; the next morning Anne, having wrestled wildly with decimals the entire evening before, would be first. One awful day they were ties and their names were written up together. It was almost as bad as a take-notice and Anne’s mortification was as evident as Gilbert’s satisfaction. When the written examinations at the end of each month were held the suspense was terrible. The first month Gilbert came out three marks ahead. The second Anne beat him by five. But her triumph was marred by the fact that Gilbert congratulated her heartily before the whole school. It would have been ever so much sweeter to her if he had felt the sting of his defeat. Mr. Phillips might not be a very good teacher; but a pupil so inflexibly determined on learning as Anne was could hardly escape making progress under any kind of teacher. By the end of the term Anne and Gilbert were both promoted into the fifth class and allowed to begin studying the elements of “the branches”—by which Latin, geometry, French, and algebra were meant. In geometry Anne met her Waterloo. “It’s perfectly awful stuff, Marilla,” she groaned. “I’m sure I’ll never be able to make head or tail of it. There is no scope for imagination in it at all. Mr. Phillips says I’m the worst dunce he ever saw at it. And Gil—I mean some of the others are so smart at it. It is extremely mortifying, Marilla. “Even Diana gets along better than I do. But I don’t mind being beaten by Diana. Even although we meet as strangers now I still love her with an inextinguishable love. It makes me very sad at times to think about her. PREFACE PREFACE For many years I have been accustomed to make notes on random leaves of the things in Life and Thought which have chanced to strike my attention. Such records of personal reaction to the outer and inner world have been helpful to my work, and so had their uses. But as one grows older the possibilities of these uses become more limited. One realises in the Autumn that leaves no longer have a vital function to perform; there is no longer any need why they should cling to the tree. So let them be scattered to the winds! It is inevitable that such Leaves cannot be judged in the same way as though they constituted a Book. They are much more like loose pages from a Journal. Thus they tend to be more personal, more idiosyncratic, than in a book it would be lawful for a writer to be. Often, also, they show blanks which the intelligence of the reader must fill in. At the best they merely present the aspect of the moment, the flash of a single facet of life, only to be held in the brain provided one also holds therein many other facets, for the fair presentation of the great crystal of life. So it comes about that much is here demanded of the Reader, so much that I feel it rather my duty to warn him away than to hold out any fallacious lures. The fact has especially to be reckoned with that such Impressions and Comments, stated absolutely and without consideration for divergent Impressions and Comments, may seem, as a friend who has read some of them points out, to lack explicit reasonableness. I trust they are not lacking in implicit reasonableness. They spring, even when they seem to contradict one another, from a central vision, and from a central faith too deeply rooted to care to hasten unduly towards the most obvious goal. From that central core these Impressions and Comments are concerned with many things, with the miracles of Nature, with the Charms and Absurdities of the Human Worm, that Golden Wire wherefrom hang all the joys and the mysteries of Art. I am only troubled because I know how very feebly these things are imaged here. For I have only the medium of words to work in, only words, words that are flung about in the street and often in the mud, only words with which to mould all my images of the Beauty and Gaiety of the World. Such as they are, these random leaves are here scattered to the winds. It may be that as they flutter to the earth one or another may be caught by the hand of the idle passer-by, and even seem worthy of contemplation. When one has thoroughly got imbued into one's head the leading truth that nothing happens without a cause, one grows not only large-minded, but large-hearted. It is hard to have one's watch stolen, but one reflects that the thief of the watch became a thief from causes of heredity and environment which are as interesting as they are scientifically comprehensible; and one buys another watch, if not with joy, at any rate with a philosophy that makes bitterness impossible. One loses, in the study of cause and effect, that absurd air which so many people have of being always shocked and pained by the curiousness of life. Such people live amid human nature as if human nature were a foreign country full of awful foreign customs. But, having reached maturity, one ought surely to be ashamed of being a stranger in a strange land! The study of cause and effect, while it lessens the painfulness of life, adds to life's picturesqueness. The man to whom evolution is but a name looks at the sea as a grandiose, monotonous spectacle, which he can witness in August for three shillings third-class return. The man who is imbued with the idea of development, of continuous cause and effect, perceives in the sea an element which in the day-before-yesterday of geology was vapour, which yesterday was boiling, and which to-morrow will inevitably be ice. He perceives that a liquid is merely something on its way to be solid, and he is penetrated by a sense of the tremendous, changeful picturesqueness of life. Nothing will afford a more durable satisfaction than the constantly cultivated appreciation of this. It is the end of all science. Cause and effect are to be found everywhere. Rents went up in Shepherd's Bush. It was painful and shocking that rents should go up in Shepherd's Bush. But to a certain point we are all scientific students of cause and effect, and there was not a clerk lunching at a Lyons Restaurant who did not scientifically put two and two together and see in the (once) Two-penny Tube the cause of an excessive demand for wigwams in Shepherd's Bush, and in the excessive demand for wigwams the cause of the increase in the price of wigwams. "Simple!" you say, disdainfully. Everything—the whole complex movement of the universe—is as simple as that—when you can sufficiently put two and two together. And, my dear sir, perhaps you happen to be an estate agent's clerk, and you hate the arts, and you want to foster your immortal soul, and you can't be interested in your business because it's so humdrum. Nothing is humdrum. The tremendous, changeful picturesqueness of life is marvellously shown in an estate agent's office. What! There was a block of traffic in Oxford Street; to avoid the block people actually began to travel under the cellars and drains, and the result was a rise of rents in Shepherd's Bush! And you say that isn't picturesque! Suppose you were to study, in this spirit, the property question in London for an hour and a half every other evening. Would it not give zest to your business, and transform your whole life? You would arrive at more difficult problems. And you would be able to tell us why, as the natural result of cause and effect, the longest straight street in London is about a yard and a half in length, while the longest absolutely straight street in Paris extends for miles. I think you will admit that in an estate agent's clerk I have not chosen an example that specially favours my theories. You are a bank clerk, and you have not read that breathless romance (disguised as a scientific study), Walter Bagehot's "Lombard Street"? Ah, my dear sir, if you had begun with that, and followed it up for ninety minutes every other evening, how enthralling your business would be to you, and how much more clearly you would understand human nature. You are "penned in town," but you love excursions to the country and the observation of wild life—certainly a heart-enlarging diversion. Why don't you walk out of your house door, in your slippers, to the nearest gas lamp of a night with a butterfly net, and observe the wild life of common and rare moths that is beating about it, and co-ordinate the knowledge thus obtained and build a superstructure on it, and at last get to know something about something? You need not be devoted to the arts, not to literature, in order to live fully. The whole field of daily habit and scene is waiting to satisfy that curiosity which means life, and the satisfaction of which means an understanding heart. I promised to deal with your case, O man who hates art and literature, and I have dealt with it. I now come to the case of the person, happily very common, who does "like reading." One of the most common pieces of advice given to jobseekers is to “be more confident.” But what does that really mean? And how can you do it? The truth is, confidence is something that you have to work on every day. It’s a muscle that you have to build up over time. However, there are some things that you can do to help build your confidence and make yourself more comfortable in job interviews — and in life. Start by Defining What Confidence Means to You Confidence means different things to different people. For some, it might mean speaking up more often in meetings. For others, it might mean being more assertive when communicating with customers or clients. And for others still, it might mean simply having the courage to apply for jobs that seem out of reach. The first step in building your confidence is identifying what confidence means to you. Once you know what it is that you want to work on, you can start taking steps to make it happen. Make a List of Your Accomplishments One of the best ways to build your confidence is to remind yourself of all of the things that you’ve accomplished. When you’re feeling down or doubting yourself, take a few minutes to sit down and write out a list of all of your successes, both big and small. Include things like, “Got a job after months of searching,” “Nailed that presentation at work,” or “Helped a friend through a tough time.” Seeing your accomplishments in writing will help you to remember just how capable and competent you really are. Challenge Your Negative Thoughts Negative thoughts can be a major confidence killer. The next time you find yourself doubting your abilities or feeling down about yourself, take a moment to sit down and examine your thoughts. Are they really true? Are they helpful? Are they serving a purpose? If not, it’s time to start challenging them. For example, let’s say you’re getting ready for a job interview and you start thinking, “I’m never going to get this job. I’m not qualified enough.” Stop and ask yourself if that’s really true. Yes, there might be other candidates who have more experience than you. But that doesn’t mean that you’re not qualified or that you don’t have a chance of getting the job. Remember, thoughts are just thoughts. They’re not facts. Just because you think something doesn’t make it true. So the next time you find yourself doubting yourself, challenge your negative thoughts and remind yourself of all of the reasons why they’re not true. Invest in Yourself One of the best ways to build your confidence is to invest in yourself. This can mean taking the time to learn new skills, attending networking events, or even just reading books that inspire you. When you invest in yourself, you’re sending a message to yourself that you’re worth investing in. You’re worth your time and your energy. And that’s a powerful message indeed. Be Kind to Yourself Lastly, remember to be kind to yourself. We are often our own worst critics. We beat ourselves up for our mistakes and dwell on our failures. But if you want to be more confident, you have to learn to be kinder to yourself. Give yourself credit when you do something well. Forgive yourself when you make a mistake. And most importantly, learn to accept yourself — flaws and all. Building confidence is a journey. It’s not something that you can do overnight. But if you’re willing to put in the work, it’s something that you can absolutely achieve. So don’t be afraid to take those first steps. Remember, even the smallest act of confidence can make a world of difference. Find a Role Model or Mentor One of the best ways to learn how to be more confident is by observing someone who already is. Find a role model or mentor who possesses the type of confidence that you admire and aspire to have. Ask them for advice and guidance. Watch how they carry themselves and interact with others. See how they handle difficult situations. Take note of the things that they do — both big and small — that make them seem so confident. And then start incorporating those things into your own life. Fake It ’Til You Make It If you’re having trouble mustering up the confidence to go after your dream job or take on a new challenge, fake it ’til you make it. In other words, act like you’re already the confident person that you want to be. The more you do it, the easier it will become — and eventually, it will become second nature. Before long, faking it won’t be necessary anymore because you’ll actually be that person. Start a Confidence Journal One of the best ways to boost your confidence is to keep track of your accomplishments. Every day, write down at least one thing that you did that made you feel proud of yourself. It could be something as simple as “Worked out for 30 minutes,” “Ate breakfast without skimping on calories,” or “Said no to a friend who wanted to borrow money.” over time, you’ll have a long list of accomplishments to look back on — and that can be a major confidence booster. Build Your Support System Finally, make sure you have a strong support system in place. These are the people who will believe in you, even when you don’t believe in yourself. They’re the ones who will encourage you to pursue your dreams and remind you of your worth when you’re feeling down. So surround yourself with positive, supportive people — and don’t be afraid to lean on them when you need to. Confidence is a vital ingredient for success in any area of life. Obviously, all machine learning that we can deploy to “smartify” solutions is also important and maybe will be, because applied to so many different areas, a great contribution as well. 5. What are your concerns about how fast tech is evolving? I’m not concerned about the speed of tech evolution. In fact in some areas it is too slow. I’m concerned about software being still developed as an automation product instead of being a value generator. We still see too much of that. 6. Which tech company do you trust the most? Which do you trust the least? Why? I trust companies that have a focus on purpose and distrust those that have solely a focus on profit. I know that there is no black or white in this, I.e. all companies must focus on profit to survive. But, dedicating resources to understand environmental and social impact of their processes, from design to sales and support is a must. 7. What are you currently learning? Take the Slow Boat in Life and Enjoy the Trip: Interview with Noonies Nominee Miguel

It must have happened to you, too, to meet people who, when faced with a problem, instead of dealing with it in depth, prefer to stop at the "surface," right? Dealing with problems can be so difficult. " " No, it is not Jung or another luminary of psychoanalysis. It is Jack Sparrow, pirate of the Caribbean. All jokes aside, this assumption holds a valuable truth: beyond the severity of the problem, our attitude can make it worse or lighter. How to overcome life's obstacles? With open-mindedness and confidence in our own abilities (ever heard of self-empowerment?). The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude toward the problem. At first glance, is a very young motocross rider. Yet, he has very clearly defined visions and goals for advancing his racing career. Not only does he understand the importance of learning from his mistakes, but he will share with us three critical mistakes that can prevent people from achieving greatness. Jack Pullen The worst way to deal with problems or situations unknown to us: your ego There is a foolproof system for staying where you are without progressing: staying well entrenched in your comfort zone. In this video I explained why you get stuck in front of problems. Very often, in the face of failure or failure, you grasp at straws and look for an external cause responsible for your holes in the water; sometimes you blame someone else. This happens because you convince yourself that everything outside you, external reality, stimuli, everything around you is modifiable, while what is inside you (your personality, your character) is unchangeable, basically a monolith. In short, we must always identify a reason external to us that justifies our failure. Mental closure: the second obstacle that imprisons you in your comfort zone. Listening, dialogue, and confrontation will help you to reason and act objectively. This is important inner work: having blinders on means being convinced that you always have the solution in your pocket, without instead absorbing from others information and experiences that are useful for learning and improvement. Jack, why do people struggle with flexibility and constructive thinking? As my third advice, in my personal opinion, our vision is distorted: contrary to what we think, it is the external factors that are not modifiable; what is outside of us is influenceable but not directly modifiable. All our excuses, barriers, shields that we raise to protect ourselves will only make our immobility worse. Our self-image, what we want to convey to others will confront us with great obstacles, first of all our ego: we do not want to admit our mistakes, weaknesses or insecurities, preventing us from being objective. This also happens to you. You protect your position too much. Others are fallible, but so are you. It is difficult to dig deep within ourselves and can often even be painful. But only by really going deep can we overcome our limitations for good. Sticking to our (supposed) certainties deludes us into thinking we are sheltered from difficulties, which often leads us to settle. This excessive need for security prevents us from living fully and achieving real satisfaction. The more superficial the response to the problem, the further away from the solution we get. The more you can read your inner self, the more courage (which is not the absence of fear, but the overcoming of fear) you have to face problems, the more solvable the problems will seem to you. So, how can we use difficulties from a personal growth perspective? Facing life head-on: difficult? It's a matter of mental approach, let's reiterate. There is one factor that makes a big difference: for example, the depth to which we are willing to descend. Being content to live on the surface will give us back mediocre experiences; living "comfortably," staying in the trap of excuses and victimhood, will keep us immobile. Going around the problem without addressing it will never lead us to overcome it. Learning to live means interfacing with what is uncomfortable, interacting with our shadowy areas. Going deep inside means accepting risks and uncertainties. This is the only way to approach problems as learning opportunities. Thanks Jack for joining us !

So let’s start! Tell us a bit about yourself. For example, name, profession, and personal interests. My name is Edd. I live in North Wales (UK) with my wife and Labrador. I work as a contract web developer and technical lead. I split my time between coding and helping development teams to put out fires (whilst training them to prevent reignition). I like to code, but I love mentoring and helping development teams thrive. Interesting! What was your latest Hackernoon Top story about? The mess dev teams can get into when they build quick and dirty prototypes/hacks…usually while under duress. Do you usually write on similar topics? If not, what do you usually write about? Primarily I like to write about the misadventures and shenanigans I have been exposed to while working as a developer in the last decade. The funny thing is they are experiences that are usually reoccurring between different teams, I like to think I can talk about them in a fun and relatable way, whilst providing solutions. Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) I usually get an idea in my head and let it rattle around in there for a bit. Daydream about it while out jogging. I just drop many of the ideas or figure they don't have legs. But eventually, it gets to a point where I am pretty sure I have a solid idea for a blog post in my head. So I stop what I am doing, start typing, and obsess over it until I think it might be half-interesting to other human beings. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? A lot of the things I write about come from first-hand experience. And I only have so many clients. It's tough to write about my experiences and anonymise them appropriately so that nobody thinks I am writing about them. I have had clients accuse me of writing about them in the past, where I really wasn't! I guess it goes to show how cliche many software development problems are. I can be a little audacious at times, which I have to keep in check as it's not everybody's cup of tea. While I have a lot of experience, I know enough to know I don't know anything. Inability to balance all these and worrying about how what I write may be perceived or reflect on me is how most draft blog posts end in the trash. But primarily time. Time to write and time to relax enough to come up with the inspiration for something to write. Oh, and I am dyslexic too. That doesn't help at all. What is the next thing you hope to achieve in your career? I've been fully booked for as long as I can remember. So I think it must be time to expand, hire a team and keep on growing. But being an in-demand contractor is like a comfortable chair that I don't want to get out of. There are so many things I want to do and experience in my life, and spending my time working is not one of them. It's important to me that I never lose sight of this. Wow, that’s admirable. Now, something more casual: What is your guilty pleasure of choice? I do like a spa day. Also, a mechanical keyboard with blue switches. Do you have a non-tech-related hobby? If yes, what is it? I used to be awesome and hike up big mountains and fly off them under my paraglider. But last year, after watching one too many friends, acquittances and strangers kill/maim themselves, I decided to stop. I miss it like you wouldn't believe (the flying part), but I got to walk away. Also, it's how I met my wife! These days I do decidedly less dangerous things. I have got into my photography, and I enjoy tending to house plants. I read a lot and fiddle with the piano sometimes. Over lockdown, I got into long-distance running in the mountains, but I got married in the spring and had a distinctly inactive end to the year. I studied Computer Science at the Universidad de la República in Uruguay and worked for three years building software for the banking industry until I decided to create my own company along with my two co-founders. What's your company called? And in a sentence or two, what does it do? Our company is called . We build products for companies in the Health, well-being, and Fitness industry. We don't just code, we help companies tackle some of the most complex technical aspects of bringing a product to life – from Product Design, Development, and QA to R+D and prototyping. Hattrick IT mobile-first What is the origin story? Hattrick started out as three college friends freelancing on Upwork and it evolved into the Product Studio we are now. Since 2014 we've worked on more than 65 mobile projects worldwide. What do you love about your team? I love how we're always enriching each other with what other teammates are working on. Though we work on multiple projects at the same time there's a very special collaborative energy going on where everyone relies on the team for help when they need it. I think that's one of our most important assets. If you weren’t working at your company, what would you be doing? If I wasn't working at Hattrick I think I would work as a Product Manager for a tech startup. I love being part of a team that takes a product and continually tries to take it to the next level. I also love trying to figure out what a product's users will want and how they will react to the features we introduce. At the moment, how do you measure success? What are your core metrics? When it comes to growth and sales we measure success using KPIs, but when it comes to grasping the level of satisfaction from our clients we use a more qualitative approach. We are more of a boutique studio, so we don't have lots of projects going on at the same time, but one thing that's very important for us is client retention, and there we have been improving steadily. The majority of our clients are ongoing and with some, we've been working for 3 years or more. That's our greatest measure of success. What’s most exciting about your company traction to date? I think there is an aspect in which we have evolved the most, and it is the value we are able to add to our client's products. When we started, we just built mobile apps, but our experience working with several clients in the same industry and our experience integrating with Wearables, Custom Hardware, and IoT devices allows us to add real value to our clients, helping them lower the risk of building a tech product. What technologies are you currently most excited about, and most worried about? And why? I'm very interested in wearables and IoT. There's a lot of hype around other stuff nowadays, but I think products in these spaces are shaping how we will interact with the tech in the following years. What advice would you give to the 21-year-old version of yourself? Honestly… none. I think at 21 I did what I could with the experience available at the time, and I think that's the way it should be. Digital Footprint is everywhere online. It is all the activities you do with keyboard and mouse, in addition to what we tap and swipe on our precious mobile devices. Here are some typical locations that we leave most of our footprint. is not just what you post but also the comments, like, tweet, retweet, and swipe left and right. Unfortunately, most platforms have very long user agreements that are difficult to read. Social Media — Make sure you keep an eye on the updates of data policies and settings. Mobile Apps — the buying habits are precious for ads and marketing. Shopping Websites — web browser as attributes that can let people identify who you are. Web Browsers uses headers and cookies Method 1 — Review Online Accounts, And Clean Them Up Most people have a few up to hundreds of different accounts online. The Most Expensive Things in Life are “Free of Charge” - Protect Your Data

A teary-eyed heartbroken kid, who once dropped his ice -cream cone, said to me — “never get attached to anything in life.” Truer words were never spoken before! Fast forward to the time when I joined a company as a Product Manager, my hiring manager and others told me to consider the product as my own baby, think of myself as the mini-CEO of the product and few other idioms. Boy, didn’t it feel good to hear those catchy phrases! I took those words directly to my heart, brain, blood vessels and imbibed it in my soul (may sound dramatic, but I am a passionate person!). Every morning, noon, evening and night I would login to the test portal of the product I was in-charge of, spend a lot of time getting my hands dirty and playing with it. Initially, I would not understand the flow and question the other PMs, dev’s and testing team on the functionality. They would explain me how the functionality works and what was the motivation for developing such a feature. I slowly started getting proficient in the product as I started to know the in and out of how the feature worked and what problems it solved and what was the use case for building it. This was my moment of being in the fore-front and handling queries from internal and external teams, thinking about the product roadmap and the new features I had to build or enhance the existing ones. In the initial days, I had developed empathy towards customer requests and use to understand their woes. I would come out with various solutions to make their life easier. Some of these would get into the product pipeline, some rejected by engineering team due to technical limitations and others due to the sheer size of efforts involved. Eventually, as my grip on the product increased, I started driving it my way. This seemed healthy at the first glance but deep in my heart I knew that I have started falling in LOVE with my product. Being in ‘Love’ with your product isn’t that bad, right? Here are a few instances I am sure most of us Product Managers (who do not know that we are secretly in love and obssesed with our product) would be doing subconsciously when confronted with such situations: Defend or promote those ridiculous work-around that exists in the product! You know deep in your heart that it is a bad design and the functionality requires to be developed.Inform the ‘messenger’ who brings the ‘Client’ feedbacks that the feature is working as expected and it is the first time you are hearing about such problems.Drawing comparisons with competitors — ‘Why should we do it when the competitors are not doing it’Drawing comparisons with competitors — ‘Why aren’t we doing it when our competitors are doing or have done it’Justifying the incorrect logic to internal teams or Clients because you have got too much used to how the product is working in the current capacity.Build flows or features that are complex in nature. You assume with your blind faith that everyone can understand it because ‘you’ are able to.Act as if you are the real voice of your customer but you are singing your own tune or an influential team/member’s tune.Implement a feature that ‘you’ feel is important but isn’t backed by data or logic(may be due to point 7)Not accepting defeat or failure when your feature/product fails. Instead come up with excuses and explanations supporting your actions why you feel this is the best feature ever launched!(sometimes showing skewed data to support your cause).Dislike the people who criticise you or disagree with your ideas! Being able to detach from your product is very difficult. Many PMs, like me, have confused their feeling of love or obsession with the passion for developing a great product. When we are emotionally attached or in love with what we have built, we become this over-protective parent who would shield and avoid any negative comments about our creation, because we feel that our product is so much better than anything else! The point is - always maintain a distance with your product. This does not mean that you don’t use or see your product daily. It means you ask yourself some hard questions(cue: the 10 points mentioned above) before committing to a feature. Dear Product Manager, Never Get Attached to Anything in Life!

I got a text from my Nanny on a Thursday.  "Can I call you?" She wasn't watching my daughter at the moment so my mind went to the next worse thing, is she quitting?  I called her.  She let me know that she wanted to take me up on my offer to help her negotiate with Toyota on a new lease she wanted to get. She had an offer of $350/ month for the RAV4 after trading in her vehicle for a 3 year lease at 12,000 miles.  She was in the office of the sales manager at her local Toyota store in Livermore, and they were pushing her to sign before, "missing this great deal".  My lease for the same vehicle was way cheaper than that, so I immediately jumped to helping her out.  I told her to leave. Over the next hour I called every Toyota dealership within 100 miles with the same exact no bullshit statement.  "I am helping a friend find a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE to lease.  She wants to buy today and I am calling all of the Toyota dealerships to see the best price that I can get her.  She does not care about any of the special perks or the color.  I am not going to renegotiate I am simply looking for the best price you can give monthly with all fees and closing costs included." The words I used were very important. Let's break them down: She is motivated and time is of the essence. "She wants to buy today." I don't give a shit about the great new model you have coming in or anything else other than price.  You better give me your best price because I'm calling all of your competition. "I am calling all of the Toyota dealerships to see the best price that I can get her." Give me your best rate for the cheapest car that you have.  I do not care about anything but price.  You better make it the best because I won't call back if it's not the best. "She does not care about any of the special perks or the color.  I am not going to renegotiate I am simply looking for the best price you can give monthly with all fees and closing costs included." Cars salesmen are typically taken aback by this and try to find a way to turn me into a friend.  My tone with them is, don't try any shit with me I'm not fucking around.. I am a nice guy and if you get me the best price out of all of the other dealerships, you'll be getting paid today and you will be happy, your boss will be happy, we'll all be happy. but Notice that I didn't mention the trade in.  The trade in could possibly be valued at different prices by different dealerships and I wanted to make sure I was having them all compete against the same item.  I gave them a deadline of 2 hours to give me a call back. After an hour I had offers from all of the dealerships (or calls that they didn't have any models right now but they would, and why don't I just wait!..  no thanks).    The best price I found was $275/ month for a Red RAV4!  Alright, already saving $2,700! Now I know we said that we won't go back and negotiate- but I stretched the truth.  My nanny wanted a RAV4 so I called back the two dealerships that had grey and let them know the rate I got and at what dealership. I let them know that I liked them better and asked if there was any way they could (not match) the rate.  They both got back to me with offers and the one offered $260/ month for the grey at my local brach- Toyota Marin.  They also matched the highest trade-in value we got and drove the car to her house in Livermore! grey beat Through this process my nanny was able to save $3,240. Steps in Negotiating the Price of any Product/ Service. 1. Learn everything you can about the product/ service.  Befriend a couple people that offer it and learn everything there is to learn. 2. Commoditize the product/ service.  Realize that there are many around and of course they all have different benefits, but break it down to the bare basics. 3. Create massive competition.  Call anyone and everyone that has the commoditized product/ service you're looking for and figure out any way possible to cut costs and let them know you are simply interested in the cheapest price and you won't be back to renegotiate. 4. Once you get the cheapest rate then it's time to go back to the products/ services that you really liked the best and see if they can beat the lowest price that you were offered. 5. You will likely get a far superior product/ service for at least a price match of the cheapest rate. Other examples that I've used this for recently: 1. I saved $13,000- $28,000 on an HVAC system for our house.  I was quoted $25,000- $40,000 for a full HVAC system/ install for our house in the Bay Area by 5-6 companies.  I ended up buying the units from an in New Jersey for around $5,000 shipped and delivered and then quoted out the installation from the companies who would do just installations.  I used the methods mentioned above and got a very reputable HVAC company to do it for less than my lowest price (which I was quoted by a not so good HVAC company). online distributor 2. We kind of love Toyota Rav4 Hybrid's in our house.  It's the best thing while we save funds to buy a Tesla :).  I used this same above approach to buy a new Rav4 for my wife and we saved $4,000 from the quote originally offered. 3. In the Bay Area no-one gets a deal on a new house- especially when we bought 2 years ago.  Though I wasn't able to get the sellers to budge on their price- but believe me- I tried EVERYTHING.. I was able to use a service called to get 1.5% back.  If you're buying a house you can negotiate a lower commission from your buying agent as well (or find one that will negotiate). Open Listings What other areas can you use this technique for? Everything in life, in a sense, should be thought about in the above way to make sure you're getting the most out of life and fully getting the most value. 1. Relationships- if you are dating make sure you're dating around and using the fact of you dating around (in a nice way) to make your significant others be their best selves while you figure out who your best companion in.  This helps you realize what you are looking for as well. 2. Jobs- using this same approach can show you how much you can be making at a company that you would never want to work for.  Take that job offer's salary and see if one of your dream job companies could offer something comparable. 3. Sales- if you are selling anything for work or life this same approach should be used.  Then you aren't as much selling as you are buying. Examples: New partners for your startup- "What can you offer our startup?  Why should we use you over your competition?" I use this for my company as we aren't working with every business we can- we are exclusive and want the best airport parking companies out there! On Air Parking I think you get the point.  If you create some healthy competition for whatever you're looking for in life you will be pleasantly surprised in the immense value you can obtain for yourself as well as, when applicable, some damn cheap prices!
