Can I Identify Myself as Digital, Please?

The Crash That Brought the Shadow to the Light. On the morning of July 5, 2017, a gray Toyota Camry turned into the cul-de-sac of a neighborhood in Bangkok in a subdivision on the western edge of the city. A driver makes a miscalculation on a 180-degree turn and accidentally causes a collision with a front gate on a model home and real estate office. The driver exits the vehicle obviously upset about the event and needs to speak with the owner of the model house about the accident. After a significant time elapsed, Alexander Caze surfaced from his home to discuss the collision at the front gate of his home. As Alexander Caze made his way to have the conversation with the person in the vehicle, the FBI stormed the property arresting Alexander Caze aka “Alpha02” aka “Admin online” the owner of the Dark Web marketplace AlphaBay. Riches to Wretchedness. Alexander Cazes was just 25 and the CEO of EBX Technologies, a company that offered website creation services for businesses. Or at least that is what Alexandre Cazes said when someone asked about his occupation. According to Cazes’s father, Alexandre was a computer genius who started his own web design business at 17, had a high IQ, AND specialized in everything from web development to encryption services. While still a teenager, Cazes was believed to have started his first company, EBX Technologies, selling computers and helping small businesses set up their websites. His IT presence was clear to see; authorities traced Alexandre as far back as 2008, posting advice on a tech forum on how to remove a virus from a digital photo. Cazes grew up near Montreal and his family said he was a genius. In the shadows, Alexandre was the alleged mastermind of AlphaBay. According to publicly available information on AlphaBay prior to its takedown, one AlphaBay staff member claimed that it serviced over 200,000 users and 40,000 vendors. Around the time of the takedown, there were over 250,000 listings for illegal drugs and toxic chemicals on AlphaBay, and over 100,000 listings for stolen and fraudulent identification documents and access devices, counterfeit goods, malware and other computer hacking tools, firearms, and fraudulent services. Comparatively, the Silk Road dark web marketplace, which was seized by law enforcement in November 2013, had reportedly approximately 14,000 listings for illicit goods and services at the time of seizure and was the largest dark web marketplace at the time. . All Wrongdoing can be Traced to an Excessive Attachment to Material Wealth Alexander Cazes biggest vulnerability turned out to be his penchant for bragging about his newly acquired wealth and status. Alexandre Cazes claimed his worth was about $23 million US, including $12.5 million in properties and vehicles, and the rest in cash and cryptocurrencies. Cazes's assets seized by the U.S. government included $6.6 million Cdn in Bitcoin, $2.4 million in Ethereum, $622,000 in Monero, and $980,512 in Zcash. He had at least 11 bank accounts and cryptocurrency exchange accounts registered in his name or his wife's name in Thailand, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Beyond cash, Cazes had a taste for luxury vehicles, including a 2013 Lamborghini Aventador, a Porsche Panamera, a Mini Cooper, and a BMW motorcycle. He had three properties in Bangkok, and a vacation property in Phuket, Thailand. Subtle Clues That Were Not So Subtle. Alexandre Cazes lived a seemingly quiet life for more than a year with his Thai girlfriend in a middle-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Bangkok, but the flashy cars he drove stood out. All in an area where people drive pickup trucks and children tool around on plastic tricycles, and there was the nearly $1 million, metallic gray Lamborghini, a Porsche, and then the Mini Cooper for his girlfriend. Nothing except expensive cars, which were completely out of place in the neighborhood where homes cost less than $120,000. The neighbors thought Alexandre Cazes worked in the hotel business. neighbor, who asked not to be named because the case involves crime, said Cazes rarely left the house before noon. The email address “Pimp_Alex_91@hotmail.com” was included in the header information of the AlphaBay welcome email. Searches for that email led investigators to forum posts by accounts with the same online handle Cazes used on AlphaBay, Alpha02. They eventually tracked down Cazes’ full name and LinkedIn account, which listed him as affiliated with EBX Technology, a company that investigators suspected was a front for AlphaBay. Alexandre Cazes had registered a PayPal account tied to bank accounts held in his name as well as the EBX Technologies business name using the "Pimp_Alex_91@hotmail.com" email account. Also, in 2008 a post to a French-language online tech forum "www.commentcamarche.com" by user "Alpha02" included the name "Alexandre Cazes" and the Hotmail address. The administrator of AlphaBay, notably, had used the username "Alpha02" before changing it to "Admin." To Encrypt or Not to Encrypt…That Is the Question. When the police, aided by the FBI and DEA, raided Alexandre Cazes's home, they said he was using a PC that was logged into AlphaBay as "Admin." The laptop was also found opened and unencrypted - revealing that Alexandre Cazes had been communicating with an AlphaBay data center, revealing the day-to-day operations as well as with AlphaBay users, and numerous passwords to AlphaBay servers and other infrastructure. One year ago, OpenAI unleashed a seismic shock wave with the release of ChatGPT, and content creators have been experiencing collective angst ever since. In a world where generative AI can effortlessly create visual and creative content, what happens to humans? Well, as it turns out, in all its forms can replace anyone, from CEOs to writers. So, this existential question applies to everyone reading this post, no matter what you do. And no one really knows the answer. But I think the acclaimed music producer Rick Rubin offers us a clue. AI “I Know Nothing about Music” Rubin’s achievements are nothing short of legendary. He has succeeded by collaborating with artists across genres ranging from hip-hop to country. He co-founded Def Jam Records, one of the most influential hip-hop record labels of all time. His work with LL Cool J and Run-DMC helped to introduce hip-hop to a wider audience, and his production on the Beastie Boys’ debut album, , helped to solidify the group as one of the biggest acts in the genre. In the 1990s, he famously rejuvenated the flagging career of Johnny Cash, acting as producer on Johnny Cash’s album . That LP (followed by five more also produced by Rubin) is considered to be one of the greatest comeback albums in music history. Licensed to Ill American Recordings Earlier in 2023,  Rubin talked with “60 Minutes” in a much-discussed interview about his life, career, and philosophy. The entire interview is worth watching. But make sure you listen about 2 minutes in when Anderson Cooper asks him, “Do you play instruments?” Rubin replies bluntly, “Barely.” Furthermore, he says he does not know how to use a soundboard, and he has no technical ability. He adds, “I know nothing about music.” “You must know something,” Cooper replies, laughing. “I know what I like and what I don’t like. I’m decisive about what I like and what I don’t like.” “So what are you being paid for?” an incredulous Cooper asks. One of the most successful producers in music history says he knows nothing about music and that he does not know how to use the technical tools of the trade. Ironically, by leaning into his instincts, he’s cultivated a skill that AI cannot touch – so far. A Groundbreaking Collaboration And his track record bears out his remarks. He famously helped Johnny Cash reclaim his career – which was experiencing a very lean period in the early 1990s – by inviting Cash to simply play his guitar alone and unplugged. As Cash would later recount in the liner notes for an anthology, Rubin suggested to Cash, “You would take your guitar, sit down in front of a microphone, and sing me the songs you love. Just sing me everything you want to record.” American Recordings Sounds almost prosaic, right? But the proposal was pure genius: Cash had actually never recorded like that. Throughout his entire career, going back to the 1950s, Cash had always recorded with other musicians. With Rubin, Cash’s sound was stripped to its bare essence of storytelling, something that Rubin felt was lacking at that point in Cash’s career. In addition, Rubin had done his homework on Cash. He knew Cash could be a man of few words in meetings. So, Rubin encouraged Cash to speak through his music. Getting Cash to play music was a way of building rapport. At first, Rubin did not turn on the recording equipment — he just asked Cash to start playing. Cash dipped into his songbook to play a range of music, from gospel to train songs. Rubin listened to Cash’s selections and applied his own instincts to help Cash select the songs that would form the basis of , including a song about a man who commits a brutal murder (“Delia’s Gone”), which Rubin correctly realized would connect Cash emotionally to contemporary musical tastes. American Recordings And that’s how they recorded their landmark series of albums together, with Rubin going on to convince Cash to take risks by recording with other artists and covering songs that had nothing to do with country on the surface – notably “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails – but had everything to do with Johnny Cash. The Value of Human Instinct How ironic. In a world where success is calculated, namely in dollars and cents and units sold, Rubin relies on an intangible: instinct. And I think he’s on to something important, leaning as he does into the human element. Rubin understands the importance of the intangibles that lie beyond the obvious aspects of a given trade, whether one is talking about writing content or creating images on video. It’s not the technical execution that has made Rick Rubin wildly successful and respected artistically. It’s instinct. And this instinct is not unique to Rick Rubin. He works at developing instinct by immersing himself in music, culture, new ideas, all the time, nonstop. He is a sponge for ideas, something he has discussed throughout 2023 in podcasts and media appearances to support the release of his recently published book, . The Creative Act: A Way of Being I highly recommend the book. He discusses the value of constantly keeping his mind open to ideas, even to the point of allowing himself to be “distracted” by simple acts such as walking. He writes about the importance of “collecting anything we find of interest” to find starting points for ideas and listening to his emotional response to those starting points. I find it interesting that he singles out human emotions (such as excitement), not intellectual responses as signposts for knowing he has come across an idea that has potential. Emotion is a distinctly human attribute. (And those of us in the marketing industry know that emotion is really what builds a connection between a human and a brand.) The Value of Mistakes He also discusses the value of mistakes. “Humanity breathes in mistakes,” he writes. “When something doesn't go according to plan, we have a choice to either resist it or incorporate it. Instead of shutting the project down or expressing frustration, we might consider what else can be done with the materials at hand. What solutions can be improvised? How can the flow be redirected?” Of course, embracing mistakes is counterintuitive to AI, at least when we want it to work properly. AI certainly repeats mistakes when it is fed inaccurate and biased data. But turning mistakes into beautiful art is a distinctly human attribute. The counterargument to my post is that AI can help anyone come up with fresh ideas, depending on how well you prompt it. And AI is just getting started learning how to think like us. An algorithm technically now does what Rick Rubin does by synthesizing ideas. But if it were that easy, generative AI would be creating new breakthrough stars every day. It’s generating synthetic music and even synthetic musicians via mimicry of existing work, to be sure, but AI has not replaced the gut instinct that results in creative breakthroughs. Then again, we don’t really know where AI is headed. This is why I say Rick Rubin offers a clue, not an answer, and it’s a fleeting one at best. But it’s a clue that will suffice for me today.       In August, 1895, just before sailing for Australia, Mr. Clemens
      issued the following statement: “It has been reported that I sacrificed, for the benefit of the creditors, the property of the publishing firm whose financial backer I was, and that I am now lecturing for my own benefit. “This is an error. I intend the lectures, as well as the property, for the creditors. The law recognizes no mortgage on a man’s brains, and a merchant who has given up all he has may take advantage of the laws of insolvency and may start free again for himself. But I am not a business man, and honor is a harder master than the law. It cannot compromise for less than one hundred cents on a dollar, and its debts are never outlawed. “I had a two-thirds interest in the publishing firm whose capital I furnished. If the firm had prospered I would have expected to collect two-thirds of the profits. As it is, I expect to pay all the debts. My partner has no resources, and I do not look for assistance to my wife, whose contributions in cash from her own means have nearly equalled the claims of all the creditors combined. She has taken nothing; on the contrary, she has helped and intends to help me to satisfy the obligations due to the rest of the creditors. “It is my intention to ask my creditors to accept that as a legal discharge, and trust to my honor to pay the other fifty per cent. as fast as I can earn it. From my reception thus far on my lecturing tour, I am confident that if I live I can pay off the last debt within four years. “After which, at the age of sixty-four, I can make a fresh and unincumbered start in life. I am going to Australia, India, and South Africa, and next year I hope to make a tour of the great cities of the United States.” I thank you all out of my heart for this fraternal welcome, and it seems almost too fine, almost too magnificent, for a humble Missourian such as I am, far from his native haunts on the banks of the Mississippi; yet my modesty is in a degree fortified by observing that I am not the only Missourian who has been honored here to-night, for I see at this very table-here is a Missourian [indicating Mr. McKelway], and there is a Missourian [indicating Mr. Depew], and there is another Missourian—and Hendrix and Clemens; and last but not least, the greatest Missourian of them all—here he sits—Tom Reed, who has always concealed his birth till now. And since I have been away I know what has been happening in his case: he has deserted politics, and now is leading a creditable life. He has reformed, and God prosper him; and I judge, by a remark which he made up-stairs awhile ago, that he had found a new business that is utterly suited to his make and constitution, and all he is doing now is that he is around raising the average of personal beauty. But I am grateful to the president for the kind words which he has said of me, and it is not for me to say whether these praises were deserved or not. I prefer to accept them just as they stand, without concerning myself with the statistics upon which they have been built, but only with that large matter, that essential matter, the good-fellowship, the kindliness, the magnanimity, and generosity that prompted their utterance. Well, many things have happened since I sat here before, and now that I think of it, the president’s reference to the debts which were left by the bankrupt firm of Charles L. Webster & Co. gives me an opportunity to say a word which I very much wish to say, not for myself, but for ninety-five men and women whom I shall always hold in high esteem and in pleasant remembrance—the creditors of that firm. They treated me well; they treated me handsomely. There were ninety-six of them, and by not a finger’s weight did ninety-five of them add to the burden of that time for me. Ninety-five out of the ninety-six—they didn’t indicate by any word or sign that they were anxious about their money. They treated me well, and I shall not forget it; I could not forget it if I wanted to. Many of them said, “Don’t you worry, don’t you hurry”; that’s what they said. Why, if I could have that kind of creditors always, and that experience, I would recognize it as a personal loss to be out of debt. I owe those ninety-five creditors a debt of homage, and I pay it now in such measure as one may pay so fine a debt in mere words. Yes, they said that very thing. I was not personally acquainted with ten of them, and yet they said, “Don’t you worry, and don’t you hurry.” I know that phrase by heart, and if all the other music should perish out of the world it would still sing to me. I appreciate that; I am glad to say this word; people say so much about me, and they forget those creditors. They were handsomer than I was—or Tom Reed. Oh, you have been doing many things in this time that I have been absent; you have done lots of things, some that are well worth remembering, too. Now, we have fought a righteous war since I have gone, and that is rare in history—a righteous war is so rare that it is almost unknown in history; but by the grace of that war we set Cuba free, and we joined her to those three or four nations that exist on this earth; and we started out to set those poor Filipinos free, too, and why, why, why that most righteous purpose of ours has apparently miscarried I suppose I never shall know. But we have made a most creditable record in China in these days—our sound and level-headed administration has made a most creditable record over there, and there are some of the Powers that cannot say that by any means. The Yellow Terror is threatening this world to-day. It is looming vast and ominous on that distant horizon. I do not know what is going to be the result of that Yellow Terror, but our government has had no hand in evoking it, and let’s be happy in that and proud of it. We have nursed free silver, we watched by its cradle; we have done the best we could to raise that child, but those pestiferous Republicans have—well, they keep giving it the measles every chance they get, and we never shall raise that child. Well, that’s no matter—there’s plenty of other things to do, and we must think of something else. Well, we have tried a President four years, criticised him and found fault with him the whole time, and turned around a day or two ago with votes enough to spare to elect another. O consistency! consistency! thy name—I don’t know what thy name is—Thompson will do—any name will do—but you see there is the fact, there is the consistency. Then we have tried for governor an illustrious Rough Rider, and we liked him so much in that great office that now we have made him Vice-President—not in order that that office shall give him distinction, but that he may confer distinction upon that office. And it’s needed, too—it’s needed. And now, for a while anyway, we shall not be stammering and embarrassed when a stranger asks us, “What is the name of the Vice-President?” This one is known; this one is pretty well known, pretty widely known, and in some quarters favorably. I am not accustomed to dealing in these fulsome compliments, and I am probably overdoing it a little; but—well, my old affectionate admiration for Governor Roosevelt has probably betrayed me into the complimentary excess; but I know him, and you know him; and if you give him rope enough—I mean if—oh yes, he will justify that compliment; leave it just as it is. And now we have put in his place Mr. Odell, another Rough Rider, I suppose; all the fat things go to that profession now. Why, I could have been a Rough Rider myself if I had known that this political Klondike was going to open up, and I would have been a Rough Rider if I could have gone to war on an automobile but not on a horse! No, I know the horse too well; I have known the horse in war and in peace, and there is no place where a horse is comfortable. The horse has too many caprices, and he is too much given to initiative. He invents too many new ideas. No, I don’t want anything to do with a horse. And then we have taken Chauncey Depew out of a useful and active life and made him a Senator—embalmed him, corked him up. And I am not grieving. That man has said many a true thing about me in his time, and I always said something would happen to him. Look at that [pointing to Mr. Depew] gilded mummy! He has made my life a sorrow to me at many a banquet on both sides of the ocean, and now he has got it. Perish the hand that pulls that cork! All these things have happened, all these things have come to pass, while I have been away, and it just shows how little a Mugwump can be missed in a cold, unfeeling world, even when he is the last one that is left—a GRAND OLD PARTY all by himself. And there is another thing that has happened, perhaps the most imposing event of them all: the institution called the Daughters of the—Crown—the Daughters of the Royal Crown—has established itself and gone into business. Now, there’s an American idea for you; there’s an idea born of God knows what kind of specialized insanity, but not softening of the brain—you cannot soften a thing that doesn’t exist—the Daughters of the Royal Crown! Some startups may consider raising for a shorter period, with the expectation of achieving a higher valuation in the next funding round, following improved product development and traction. This approach ensures that you avoid giving away too much of a stake in your business at a valuation that compromises it. However, predicting future market dynamics can often be tough. In the current economic climate, securing a more extended financial cushion is a sensible strategy. But be flexible, this approach should be tailored to the specific circumstances of your project. Staying adaptable and not giving a sense of desperation is key. Token-Based Fundraising If you're considering raising funds via a token-based approach, your fundraising will take on a unique dimension. You'll encounter a diverse set of stakeholders, including angels, syndicates, DAOs, and early-stage VCs. While the fundamentals of your business and roadmap will still be crucial points of focus for each of these investors, your tokenomics and token utility will hold even greater influence on investors’ confidence. In this case, the performance, returns, and risk to the investor is linked to the token. Including clear and well-thought out token value flow and token allocation slides in your deck is a must. Any serious token investor, who is legitimately invested in the project, needs confidence that your team comprehensively understands where and how the token value is accruing. It’s worth highlighting that at present, we’ve observed a reduced enthusiasm from investors to invest in pure token-based fundraising, given the lack of liquidity and uncertainty on the positioning of tokens in current and future security regulatory frameworks. Consider researching the programs available to you, and tapping into blockchain ecosystem funds, grants programs, accelerators, and crowdfunding platforms that run all year round. These initiatives will typically have a thesis or specific type of start-up that they aim to support. Performing some basic online research and keeping an eye out for the opportunities that you are most suitable for, will put you in the best position for success and save you valuable time. As part of the application process, prepare your pitch deck and engage in interviews with the program team in a similar manner to how you would for a traditional investor meeting. First impressions always matter. Taking caution and the time to also carefully evaluate the terms and restrictions associated with these sources is essential. For instance, ecosystem funds often offer grants with specific milestones and exclusivity requirements, or may require you to build on top of their blockchain. Ensuring that the ecosystem aligns with your startup's value proposition and target audience before committing is crucial. For crowdfunding platforms the process is slightly different. These platforms offer you the chance to get your startup in front of a broad global audience. Here, if your idea resonates with retail audiences, you have the potential to receive smaller investments from a large number of people, as opposed to the more traditional route of getting larger funds from one or two investors. a SWOT analysis is an evaluation of the fundamental, operational, technical, social, economic, and even to some degree administrative elements of a project. This is not a model to be used for trading purposes. (NFA, DYOR) *Note: Composed of four elements, and , a SWOT analysis framework provides excellent insight for establishing a high-level understanding of the state of a project’s well-being through the lens of a birds-eye view. Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats It can help formulate decisions around which areas require more attention, set performance goals, and organize a foundational understanding of where a project is headed. Rarely (if ever) used in crypto, it is time to apply this timeless method of evaluation to the digital asset space. Today, ( ) an OG in the privacy sector and the pioneer of an on-chain zk-SNARKS application, will get a SWOT. Zcash ZEC , 💪 Strengths (Internal) (Helpful) 1. OG Status Built on the very human fabric of trust, when it comes to blockchain technology and the greater crypto/digital asset industry, reputation is everything. Launched in the later half of 2016, Zcash qualifies as a generation one projects that has been able to stand the test of time longer than most of the market. With its resilience being proved through historic performance, Zcash can innately attract higher degrees of trust toward the operations of its network. Additionally, being an OG gave Zcash enormous attention during the younger years of the crypto industry and in turn, gave it a chance to build strong roots within the original communities of founders. 2. Expanding Privacy Sets The core feature that gives Zcash transactions their privacy is related to the shielded transactions feature. The way that Shielded transaction works is that users deposit their Zcash into privacy sets (Sprout, Sapling, and Orchard). The larger the amount of addresses, the larger amount of commingled funds, and the more transactions that take place, the stronger the privacy is supposed to become. 3. UTXO model There is an ongoing debate in the digital asset ecosystem regarding which transaction model is superior; Unspent Transaction Outputs (BTC) or Accounts (ETH). Being built as a fork of Bitcoin during much earlier stages of the industry positioned Zcash to adopt Bitcoin’s UTXO system. Taking the side of it being superior, having a UTXO model means that the actual transactions are much closer to cash (whereas account-based systems are more reminiscent of current banking systems). Additionally, UTXO systems provide higher capabilities around the parallel processing of transactions and a higher degree of privacy. 4. Pioneer of zk-SNARKs in Crypto Considered the holy grail of privacy, Zero-Knowledge proofs have been, and continue to be, one of the most funded areas of interest. Zcash was years ahead of every other privacy project in its implementation of ZK cryptography into digital assets. Being the first to ever bake SNARKS into the core architecture of the blockchain Zcash secured its reputation in the privacy space. In fact, it would be fair to say that it was much of Zcash’s efforts that have guided the industry into the evolution/pursuit from pseudonymity to true anonymity. 5. Own Unique (Bitcoin) Blockchain Architecture In a world that is constantly evolving, merging, and diverging, consistency is infinitely rare and highly appreciated. With the introduction of modularity into the crypto industry, or to be more exact, following the success of Ethereum as a smart contract platform, 99% of projects fell into the race for interoperability by trying to be EVM-compatible (or the like with Cosmos). Being born into the very early generations of the industry, Zcash is proudly standing on design principles, borrowed and adapted from Bitcoin (even down to the monetary supply and policy). This positions Zcash into a category of its own, giving it more distinguishing variables to help it stand out from the overcrowded and sometimes confusing layer 1 scene. 6. Proof-Of-Work (POW) Another fundamental technical differentiator between Zcash and the vast majority of modernized blockchains; the POW consensus mechanism. POW is a computationally intensive mechanism that happens to be the purest form of energy conversion from electricity to money. It is more decentralized (in terms of permissibility). It is more resilient against the “rich-get-richer” flaws that accompany alternative financial models. Being Proof-Of-Work attracts a very particular set of actors that are more likely to be supporters of the utopian dream of blockchain. 7. Trusted Setup Ceremony This is a very sensitive subject matter. Whenever the Zcash network was being instantiated, there were six groups of independent entities that had to participate in the creation/seeding of the genesis privacy points. While anything can be said about them, the efforts of all these participants and the extremes to which they went in the generation of randomness is astounding. The process began with acquiring brand new devices from stores in cash, running to obscure random hotels to rip out all radio materials (Wifi/Bluetooth), all while being recorded by neutral external parties non-stop with cameras that had no internet connectivity, not to mention that none of the six parties know each other in different parts of the world. One of the members was riding back and forth on a train in Japan to make sure their signal was difficult to intercept; another one had radioactivity while in an airplane, and thats was just the start. At the end of it all, the devices must be obliterated, smashed to bits, and burned to dust. 😞 Weaknesses (Internal) (Harmful) 1. Broken Issuance Model Incentives are key to establishing healthy, self-sufficient ecosystems. Generally speaking, in POW models, issuance is based on a per-block basis that is allocated to the node that found the most recent block. Zcash leverages the same structure to its issuance with a minor caveat; mining rewards are not allocated exclusively to miners. The newly minted ZEC tokens are allocated according to an 80/20 split, 80% for miners, 20% for foundations (Electric Coin Capital and and the Zcash Foundation). That means that 1/5 of all the rewards that have been minted into the market have been distributed throughout entites that did not necessarily contribute to the maintenance of the network, which simultaneously implies that the miners likely feel under-compensated and won’t be too eager to return. As of 2020, the 20% reward is allocated to a Development fund that is still under the control of the foundations. 2. Proof-Of-Work (POW) Applicable to both a weakness and a strength. Bitcoin owns this space. While Proof-Of-Work is an excellent model for security, monetary policy, and decentralization, the foundation of energy consumption (electricity leveraged to mint coins), upon which it is built, is very resource intensive and increasingly becoming more selective regarding its allocation. The raw amount of POW that Bitcoin controls will likely only continue to grow and render anything else basically incapable of competing. Zcash requiring physical machines implies that it will have to compete against Bitcoin, not just for the resources (electricity) but also for developer mindshare (creating improved machines) and manufacturer capacity (requiring supply chains for the components). 🧐 Opportunities (External) (Helpful) 1. Privacy Centric Privacy is one of, if not the largest, areas of interest for academia, commerce, and personal users in the context of computer science. The need and desire for privacy will continue to grow in tandem with the expansion and sophistication of technology. As governments boldly inject themselves more and more into the personal lives of their civilians, privacy will become only more valuable to the population. 2. Implementation of POS Proof-Of-Stake has become the de facto consensus mechanism for all new-generation blockchains. It is known to be much more friendly for the environment, easier to technologically bootstrap (no need for overly complex machinery), and model economically. Zcash has announced that it plans on migrating to POS (no concrete date or definitive roadmap yet) in order to improve the project’s level of decentralization and invite new participants into the fold. The exact implementation is still unclear, but as mentioned by Nate Wilcox, the founder of the Electric Coin Company, there might be a design novelty where, even in the presence of POS, there will still be a POW element. Depending on how exactly the project utilizes it, will also potentially open up new affiliations with entities related to ESG. 😳 Threats (External) (Harmful) 1. Miner Centralization Zcash has raised concerns about the level of distribution of its mining pools. Coinbase came out with that showed more than 51% of the Zcash hashrate belonged to a single entity ( ). The verdict here is simple and straightforward, if a single entity has a majority share/control of the network’s computational resources, then a project is basically useless because it is not resilient against being manipulated. research ViaBTC 2. Public Abandonment Maybe it’s a bottom signal, maybe it’s just really been a testing bear market, but the social sentiment has become one of abandonment. Zcash used to have one of the most vibrant, supportive communities, but as of this cycle, so many of them have jumped ship and decided to cut their losses. The amount of confusion around the direction of the project and the amount of competition (that is likely superior in its privacy primitives) has led to people losing their faith or interest in the project. Takeaway: A withering darling. As it is today, the project seems to be losing its importance to the industry (as measured by market capitalization); nevertheless, hope shines somewhere far away that one day, Zcash can embody the vision that it once presented to the world… very far away. In spite of any potential negatives, the project continues to garner support from industry giants such as Coinbase and prominent individuals such as Ryan Selkis. Perhaps the solid technical foundation by a very notable, revered team of Zcash will be able to bring it back to life. Conclusion: Ultimately, the vision of Zcash was to arbitrate out all other privacy coins and deliver a public ledger with private transactions. Meaning whenever a private transaction is sent, there will only be an adjustment to the state of the ledger without revealing which addresses are involved or the amount of money. Long story short, I believe that Zcash will not be able to deliver on this utopian vision. Even with the growth of the privacy sets, it seems possible to reverse engineer the state transitions that take place and map out the activity. It cannot be ruled out that in the event of a global sentiment shift or some major breakthrough, ZEC becomes the definitive privacy asset of choice for the world; given a non-zero chance and the simultaneous size of the opportunity, perhaps ZEC is a silent buy. Would I Invest in ZEC? Plainly put, I have lost more money in ZEC than any other crypto so there is definitely bias here… It seems that owning one coin is not that big a deal, maybe even a handful of them; however, I would definitely put anything substantial into ZEC. not On a quick side note, certainly, a technical indicator such as price does not belong in a SWOT analysis; however, this SWOT would be remiss without even a mention of ZEC’s monstrosity of a chart. Being a tier 1 project (considered valuable and valid by the broader industry, never falling out of the top 100), ZEC is easily one of the greatest disappointments in terms of its performance. According to Sandbox’s website, SAND is required to access the Sandbox platform, participate in the platform’s governance, and earn rewards through the staking program on the platform as further described below. 440. On or about May 23, 2019, before the minting of SAND in July 2019, Animoca raised approximately $2.5M in cash and crypto assets through TSB via the issue of Simple Agreements for Future Equity (“SAFEs”) and SAND tokens, to “fund the development of the upcoming blockchain version of The Sandbox.” According to Animoca’s May 23, 2019 press release, the majority of investors allocated their investment to the purchase of both SAND tokens and future equity in TSB via the SAFE agreements (in the amount of $2 million), while some investors allocated their investment exclusively to the purchase of SAND tokens ($500,000). Per the release, the funding round was led by Hashed, for approximately $1 million, and also included a number of other crypto venture capital investors. 441. TSB then minted a total supply of 3 billion SAND on the Ethereum blockchain in or around July 2019 and offered and sold SAND through purportedly private sales and in an IEO that raised $3 million on the Binance.com Platform starting August 13, 2020. 442. SAND has been available for buying, selling, and trading on the Binance.US Platform since October 2022. 443. The information TSB publicly disseminated has led SAND holders, including those who have purchased SAND since August 2020, reasonably to view SAND as an investment in and to expect to profit from TSB’s efforts to grow the Sandbox protocol, which, in turn, would increase the demand for and value of SAND. 444. On its blog posts announcing “exchange listings,” Sandbox touted its efforts to obtain “listings” and the SAND token’s liquidity in the secondary market. For example, in a September 21, 2021 Medium blog post, Sandbox stated that “$SAND is listed on over 60 global cryptocurrency exchanges, including a dozen of the top exchanges by market capitalization.” 445. In addition, the Sandbox stated that it would pool the proceeds from the private token sales and the IEO to develop and promote use of the platform. For example, the May 23, 2019 press release stated: “The funds raised through this transaction will be used to grow the development team and infrastructure for the [Sandbox] Game Platform, support marketing efforts through the acquisition of creators and IP licenses, and provide for security, legal, and compliance expenses as well as general and administrative costs.” The Sandbox Whitepaper similarly described identical uses for the $3 million in funds intended to be raised during the IEO. 446. Moreover, according to the Sandbox Whitepaper, of the 3 billion SAND tokens that were initially minted, 19% were to be allocated to the Sandbox founders and team, and another 25.8% were to be allocated to the Company Reserve. 447. In addition, the Sandbox’s Medium blog post on July 25, 2019 stated, “[A]n interesting feature of [the $SAND] token is that it can accrue in value over time, due to the fact that it is scarce. There will be a limited supply of 3 billion units of $SAND available.” 448. Moreover, TSB stated publicly that it would take steps to manage the market for SAND, including the SAND Whitepaper stating that the Sandbox team controls the supply of SAND tokens and has implemented a “controllable supply mechanism, such as purchasing SAND from multiple exchanges,” and that “while the total supply of SAND is fixed, the initial amount of SAND offered will provide a scarcity effect reducing the SAND available per capita and therefore fostering demand.” 449. Additionally, in many instances, Animoca has touted the backgrounds of Pixowl, TSB, and the Sandbox core members, including Madrid and Borget, in describing the success and future development of the Sandbox: a. After the acquisition of Pixowl, Yat Siu, the co-founder and director of Animoca, stated in a press release, dated August 27, 2018 (the “2018 Press Release”) that “Pixowl’s experienced developers will significantly increase our development capabilities. Its founders are highly respected game industry veterans who have developed multimillion dollar franchises. We believe the blockchain version of The Sandbox has incredible potential . . . We look forward to utilizing the many opportunities for growth conferred by this acquisition”; b. In the 2018 Press Release, Madrid also commented: “Animoca Brands is a perfect fit for Pixowl and we are happy to add our brand relationships to its portfolio while accelerating growth for our key IP, The Sandbox[.] . . .”; c. The 2018 Press Release also touted that Ed Fries, the creator of Microsoft Game Studios and co-founder of the Xbox project, is a special advisor to The Sandbox’s original game developer Pixowl and will therefore continue to serve on the advisory team. d. The Sandbox Whitepaper further claimed, “We have a strong product roadmap ahead and a top team to execute a strong vision to build a unique virtual world gaming platform where players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences and spread the power of blockchain as the lead technology in the gaming industry.” 450.
