Returning after a week in Thailand at the P2E Expo Asia and there are some lessons to carry home. (1) East vs West - the crypto, and blockchain scene here is very different. In fact it's reminiscent of other regions like Africa who are still considered early adopters but aren't moving with the hype - they're focused on making crypto and blockchain work for them to connect people. They're still riding the wave of P2E gaming and trying out all sorts of other models. My thoughts are very clear on this so I won't labour the point. (2) There was very little NFT noise at this event. There were lots of panel discussions about interoperability across games and the but the thinking just hasn't moved on. It's still driven by Hopium and not technical understanding. Only a few got this, including some VCs. (3) VC attitudes are shifting with the market now. Not so interested in tokens or games that are just a slide deck dream. Equity deals are now attractive again, infrastructure and tools a desire, and teams with pedigree and more than just a stock Unity demo are a focus. Tokenomics are more or less ignored in favour of gameplay but this is still the quickest way to generate a return for investors. (4) We are also being fed Western biased news with little to no coverage elsewhere. It's typical of the Silicon Valley mentality but Asia Pac is red hot with capital deal flow, family offices getting involved and projects being funded with much bigger tickets. It's a shame we just follow the same crowd of VC news outlets who only know how to spell 'a16z'. (5) WAGMI? Fuck off. I met people who were hung out to dry and the so-called "community" disappeared when the chips were down and help was needed. I got a sense of disappointment, of being sold on a dream that turned into a nightmare, of learning the hard way and receiving no help. There was maturity here among some of the projects and teams due to their experiences - but they are still here, building but with longer term strategies now. (6) I was impressed with Gala games and their approach to linking music, games, and movies to their creator ecosystem. One to watch. (7) There's the typical shift in marketing and branding away from 'games' to 'metaverse' to follow the en vogue trend which is going to create a lot of confusion for people looking to understand what it really is. (8) Barely anyone looks at the data they generate in their web3 projects which is great news if you have an AI analytics platform like mine lol But honestly, it's a worry that it's not on anyone's mind so early on. It can be the difference between success and failure. Overall, this market is booming for different reasons. While the West is pushing ahead with NFTs and giving them more utility the East are still focused on gaming and accessibility. Nobody is wrong. This space will mature in different ways along different paths and one day they'll meet in the Metaverse. Web3 Metaverse Also interesting just how different attitudes are to NFTs, or "digital collectables" are across regions and regulators. Tencent is halting all NFT sales and trades on its Huanhe platform. Consumers are even being offered refunds, and all secondary sales are stopped also. The platform literally launched 12 months ago but there's been a slowing down of NFT sales to the point a lot of new collections remain unsold. After state media repeatedly highlighted issues around NFT speculation in the country, tech giants including Tencent and Ant Group in June signed a pact to stop. While global mainstream NFTs trade on public blockchains with cryptocurrencies, China’s digital collectables are mostly based on centrally-controlled blockchains and are sold in yuan. Crypto is facing strong regulatory pressure and consumer-facing protection in China but in other regions, it's booming. There's also the lack of real excitement over NFTs in web3 projects - digital collectables are not really interesting for consumers in these areas, for example, the idea of owning your assets is purely driven by Western conversations so far. It is far more lucrative as a tradeable asset for liquidity than real ownership and that points to why there will always be friction in this space and why gamers and consumers in general baulk at the concept. Even juggernauts like BTS have faced a backlash from fans who were told that the parent company, HYBE, was launching an NFT collection and exchange back in January and so far nothing else has emerged. If an army as big as the fanbase of BTS doesn't want NFTs as part of their experience and connection with the band then this should make people sit up and consider that not everyone across the World shares the cheerleading enthusiasm you read about. There are always two sides to every story, and if the is truly supposed to represent an open and borderless digital future then it's time we did a little more research beyond our own physical ones. However, while considering the dynamics of the modern professional world and the intricate branches of IT, is our educational system effective enough? Before answering this question, let's first deviate a bit and contemplate over our existing course of a bachelor's degree. ● Conventional Undergraduate Degree: After being tutored a bunch of subjects in a period of three to four years, a student eventually obtains a bachelor's degree in a particular field. The subjects he studies each semester gradually build and shape up their degree. Students are also mandated to obtain an internship certification associated with their area of interest, an immensely productive but seldom compulsion. You can refer to the official for more information documentation Drawbacks of Chakra UI Although Chakra UI is a powerful library, it is important to highlight some of the potential drawbacks you might face while using this technology. Here are some that I personally dealt with. : Chakra UI has a completely different set of APIs and concepts than what most developers might be used to. Personally, it took some time before I was able to grasp these concepts so keep in mind it may require some time and effort to understand. Learning Curve : After understanding Chakra UI this was the next issue I faced. Since Chakra UI components come already pre-built they did not fit perfectly into the design and branding of the application I was working on. I had to include additional styling. Of course, with time I got used to this and I developed ways to solve this particular Issue. Design Constraints : Adding Chakra UI to your application will ultimately increase the amount of space in your application. You might want to take note of this if you are building an application that has strict performance restrictions because the overall bundle size might affect this. Bundle Size : If you noticed earlier when we Initialized our React app with Chakra UI we installed some dependencies one of which was which is used for styling. These dependencies may complicate your dependency tree and may cause version control issues in your application. Currently, I am not aware of ways to solve this. Dependencies Emotion Conclusion While Chakra UI provides a powerful framework for building components it is important to consider the pros and cons of this technology and if it fits into the design and constraints of your project. Some of my fondest gaming memories revolve around Mario Kart. From playing through the original Super Mario Kart campaign on SNES with my dad and younger brothers in the 90’s, to playing in college, these frenetic kart racers have been an integral part of my gaming identity and I know I’m not alone. Mario Kart 8 drinking games So, to hear that Nintendo is working on Mario Kart 9 comes as no surprise. Mario Kart has been one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises over the years. Its previous iterations, Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, have thrived on both the Wii U and Switch, consistently selling like hotcakes almost a decade after release. But now, it seems it’s finally time for something new. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Mario Kart sequel. While this alone is exciting news for Nintendo fans, it’s not an earth-shattering surprise that Nintendo wants to create a sequel to one of its best-selling games across two platforms. article Mario Kart 9 Release Date (Based on Nintendo’s Publishing History) While no official release date or vague window has been given, there is plenty to speculate. The Mario Kart team has had some time since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released on Switch, so a sequel isn’t necessarily too far off. It wouldn’t be unprecedented to tease a new game and release it in the same year. If this is the case, the earliest we would see Mario Kart 9 would be Holiday 2022 in my opinion. If we look at the most recent Mario Kart game announcements in relation to their release dates, they tend to reveal their games a year ahead of time. Mario Kart 8 Confirmed January 2013, Unveiled at E3 that Summer Released May 2014 Mario Kart 7 (3DS) Confirmed E3 Summer 2010, Release Date Given E3 Summer 2011 Released December 2011 Mario Kart Wii Confirmed E3 2007 Release Date Announced Fall 2007 Released April 2008 With this release data in mind, I would imagine a more realistic guess for Mario Kart 9’s release date would be Spring 2023. However, with development struggles we’ve seen in 2020-2021 I wouldn’t be surprised to see this release Holiday 2023. Is there a Mario Kart 9 Trailer? Currently, there is no official trailer or even teaser available. We only have the recent article regarding Dr. Toto’s quote as a reference. Toto did confirm that a teaser would be very likely given in 2022, so a trailer, an official title reveal, or even just an image could be coming soon. Now that Nintendo has opted for digital-only Nintendo Directs to announce new content, this is likely where we will get to see anything regarding a Mario Kart 9 trailer. Unfortunately, there seems to be no direct schedule or pattern for these Directs, and Nintendo announces these showcases days before they are live– so fans will have to wait to be surprised by this announcement. It stands to reason Nintendo will make this announcement no later than Summer 2022. Especially if they want to release it by Spring 2023. New Features Arguably the most exciting part of this leak is what Toto included in his quote: Mario Kart 9 will have a “new twist”. Like many of you, my mind is reeling with realistic and fantastical ideas of what this twist could be for the future of Nintendo's Karting franchise. Based on trends and how Nintendo has been releasing games, here are some predictions. A History of Mario Kart New Gimmicks Mario Kart is far removed from racing sims like Gran Turismo or Forza. Nintendo has an eye for fusing racing with uncanny gimmicks that add the joyful flavor we associate with Mario Kart. In recent titles, Mario Kart has included gimmicks such as: Mario Kart Double Dash - dual drivers Mario Kart Wii - motion controls Mario Kart 7 (DS) - First person driving and gliding Mario Kart 8 - anti grav karts Mario Kart Live Circuit: Augmented Reality racing with tangible playsets Some of these gimmicks are forgettably simple, and some are game-changing. For Mario Kart 9 we may see a simple gameplay change added into the tried and true core Mario Kart formula. This could be something like: Additional characters from Nintendo IP. (Squidling, Link and Animal Crossing characters were added into Mario Kart 8 and this could be expanded upon. New vehicles New items New game modes While a simple change like this is most likely the “twist” we will see, I think it’s worth speculating some cool possibilities… Will We See a Mario Kart + Diddy Kong Racing Crossover? It’s been far too long since Nintendo's beloved alter-ego kart racer Diddy Kong Racing graced the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. Despite it being the 8th best selling game on Nintendo 64 it has never seen more than a Nintendo DS remake. In this crossover, you would get everything you know and love from a polished Mario Kart with a wonderful mashup of features from Diddy Kong Racing: You’d get familiar faces in Conker (hopefully pre-Bad Fur Day version) and Banjo, along with forgotten buddies like Bumper the Badger and Timber the Tiger. There was even a Foghorn Leghorn lookalike and a driving clock in there somewhere. Characters: I’d love to see the iconic DKR balloons and power-ups mashed into the Mario Kart 9 arsenal. The aesthetic touch would be nice to the traditional style of Mario Kart, with interesting strategic possibilities with the ability to choose your perk by running into a color coded balloon, while adding a life-saving shield and magnet abilities. Abilities: The addition of planes and hovercrafts would make things interesting in a full-fledged Mario Kart. Vehicles: While not fully open world, this crossover would include a nice explorable hub-world to find tracks, arenas and bosses. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Nintendo game without plenty of secrets and collectables to discover. Overworld: A new take for Mario Kart would be to include boss and challenge stages akin to Diddy Kong Racing. Taking on Tricky the Triceratops and Wizpig are memorable knuckle-whitening experiences that I would love to see translated into the Mario Kart universe. Bosses: While this seems too good to be true, there’s a slight chance Mario Kart 9 could include a crossover into Diddy Kong Racing. While Microsoft bought the rights to Rare back in 2002, Microsoft has been playing nice with many of its competitors as of late. In particular, rumours are floating around that Nintendo and Microsoft are even teaming up. So, it’s not too far fetched to think they’d loosen their hold on their IP. The premise of Mario Kart + Diddy Kong Racing also nicely echoes their Mario + Rabbids branding that has been catching steam with fans. And, with excruciating titles like New Super Mario Bros. Wii U in Nintendo’s catalogue, a title like Mario Kart + Diddy Kong Racing Switch can’t be out of the cards. Maybe Mario Kart 9 Will Get the Open World Treatment Nintendo has broken tradition for several linear games recently, opting for more open-world experiences. Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Arceus are all games that changed core gameplay dramatically to reflect modern gaming trends. Why not Mario Kart? Even though it’s a racing game and not an open world friendly adventure game, there is plenty of precedent for this. Mario Kart 9 could emulate an open world hub like the one used in Diddy Kong Racing. Of course, with 20+ years of game development evolution, this world would be much more expansive. Forza Horizon is another shining example of what Mario Kart could look like in 2022-2023. Characters could explore a huge space with events and challenges aplenty. With Nintendo's polish and creativity, having more freedom to drive around could be a pioneering experience for the franchise. What Mario Kart Really Needs is a Proper Story Mode Mario Kart has always nailed the pure racing mechanics in their titles, however, besides completing various Cups, unlocking characters and destroying time trials, there isn’t much reason behind the racing. Adding in even a small narrative element with cutscenes, challenges and levels could go a long way into making Mario Kart even more engaging. Films like Ford vs. Ferrari and docuseries like Formula One on Netflix show that people indeed are interested in the stories revolving around racing. Even if it is revolving around nonsensical Nintendo characters. Wildly Different Game Types Nintendo Could Explore And finally, my pie-in-the-sky dreams for what Mario Kart 9 could be. Here are a few car-related games that I would love to see Nintendo emulate. Some of these could potentially be an added game mode, and some are so unrealistic that a dedicated game would be the only possibility. Mario and co. have to deliver toads and toadettes all over a chaos-filled New Donk City or Mushroom kingdom. Sign me up. Crazy Taxi- Mario can explore a world in which he can alternate between climbing and platforming. He explores and terrorizes Bowser and his baddies, stealing their vehicles and gradually growing into the baddest Mario in town. Grand Theft Auto- Mario Kart gets big-wheeled monstrosities and players have to perform stunts, navigate obstacles and drive in style in addition to racing. Monster Truck Rally- The most robust and over-the-top battle mode Mario Kart has ever seen. This is retribution for Mario Kart 8 not having a battle mode until Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Twisted Metal Clone- Wrapping Up What We Know Despite having few quality sources at the moment, there is plenty to predict regarding Nintendo’s new kart racer based on their history and the trajectory of the games industry. Then we can fill the rows of A with a one-hot encoding of the partition index that each sample belongs to. We use the following nonlinear Cosine data model as a running example to demonstrate more clearly how A is constructed and affects the augmentation procedure. For illustration purposes, we use in Figures 5, 7 equidistant x values as this reduces noise and emphasizes the effect of ADA parameters more. Number of augmentations: For each anchor matrix A and γ we can add n new samples to the dataset. The addition of more augmented samples may not be beneficial as the optimization may overfit the approximations in the augmented data model in Equation 10. In the Cosine data model this is specifically problematic when X is close to multiples of π as depicted in Figure 7. Additionally, we provide a baseline and an augmented model fit in Figure 8 with different number of augmentations. As it is standard practice to use stochastic gradient descent methods for optimizing a regressor, we suggest applying ADA on each minibatch instead of the entire dataset. This avoids choosing a fixed numbers of augmentations. Furthermore, it adds diversity to the "mixing" behavior of ADA, because the samples that are being mixed change in each iteration. The addition of more augmented samples may not be beneficial as the optimization may overfit the approximations in the augmented data model in Equation 10. Additionally, we provide a baseline and an augmented model fit in Figure 8 with different number of augmentations. Number of augmentations: As it is standard practice to use stochastic gradient descent methods for optimizing a regressor, we suggest applying ADA on each minibatch instead of the entire dataset. This avoids choosing a fixed numbers of augmentations. Furthermore, it adds diversity to the "mixing" behavior of ADA, because the samples that are being mixed change in each iteration.
