A few weeks ago, published its yearly global survey results about how people from more than 150 countries worldwide evaluated their lives. The full report can be found (page 22). the World Happiness Report here What is the methodology for ranking countries based on their happiness? The polling company Gallup conducts interviews with hundreds of thousands of people across the nations included in the report. People assess their own happiness using a scale from 1 to 10, responding to questions such as if they smiled, laughed or experienced enjoyment the previous day. (either 0 or 1): “If you were in trouble, do you have relatives or friends you can count on to help you whenever you need them, or not?”, “Are you satisfied or dissatisfied with your freedom to choose what you do with your life?” or “Have you donated money to a charity in the past month?” Other questions are binary To measure trustworthiness, the survey also includes the so-called “wallet question” (if you lose your wallet containing $200, how likely a neighbor, a police officer, or a stranger would return your wallet). To quote from : the report To return a wallet requires a level of benevolence extending far beyond basic trustworthiness, since the finder has to go out of their way, often at considerable effort, to do a good turn for someone else. Operating a multi-tenant serverless cloud platform comes with a unique set of challenges. There are many articles out there that deal with standard optimization techniques like SSR, PWA, tree shaking and similar. This article is similar, but also different as it focuses on things unique to serverless environments, in this case, AWS Lambda specifically. My name is Sven, and I’m one of the founders of Webiny. Don’t know Webiny? — It’s a serverless CMS powered by React, GraphQL, and Node. Prep work To get out measurements, and help us identify the problem(s) we will be using to run our requests, gather timings data and get a better understanding what a user is seeing, and experiencing, on their end. webpagetest.org What we will be looking at is the “first view”, meaning how do the load times look for a user that has never visited the page before. This is important, as the browser cache can hide many of the bottlenecks. Load timings — Identify the problem(s) From the chart at the top of the page, the most meaningful metric for us was the “ ”. If you look closely, you’ll see that it took almost 2 seconds just to start the render of the page 😱. This is due to the nature of a single page app (SPA). Basically, you first need to download a massive JS bundle (1), which then the main thread needs to process (2) before the page can display some content. Time to Start Render (1) Download JS bundle. (2) Wait until the main thread processes the JS bundle. However, that’s just part of the story. Once the main thread processes the JavaScript bundle, it actually fires off several API calls to the API Gateway. At this stage, the user sees the notorious spinner, and he doesn’t actually see any content so far. Here is a filmstrip of the visual events: What we see here is a poor user experience. The user sees an empty page for about 2 seconds, and then a spinner for another second. That additional second of viewing the spinner is caused by the API requests that follow once the JS bundle is loaded. The API requests are needed to retrieve the content and actually render the content. If this was a normal VPS, the time cost of these API calls would mostly be predictable, but when dealing with serverless, you have the infamous “cold start”, and to make matters even worse, in case of Webiny Cloud Platform, the Lambdas are part of a VPC, which means we need to initiate an ENI for each new Lambda instance, this increases the cold start time drastically. There is also another cost that’s bundled inside the API timings, that’s the latency. Since it’s my browser (the client), that’s executing the API requests, the browser needs to transverse from my computer, over the Internet, all the way to the origin, and back. That is repeated for each API request. Challenges Based on the above we identified a few challenges that we need to tackle: Improve the speed of API requests, or reduce the number of API requests that block rendering Reduce the size of the JS bundle, or make the bundle not a requirement for rendering the page Unblock the main thread Potential approaches: Optimize code to run faster — high effort, high cost, questionable gain Increase lambda RAM size — low effort, medium to high cost, low gain Something else? We actually opted in for the third option. What if we don’t need the API requests at all, and what if we don’t need the JS bundle at all? This would eliminate all our pain points. Our first idea was to generate a static HTML snapshot of the rendered page and serve that to the user. A failed attempt Webiny Cloud, which is the serverless infrastructure, based on AWS Lambda, that hosts Webiny websites, it had the ability to detect bots and then instead of serving a JS version of the page, it would reroute the request to a instance which would render the page using headless Chrome, and then serve back the HTML to the bot. The main reason for that was SEO, as many bots don’t read JavaScript. So we had the idea of actually using that functionality and serve back the same output to regular users. Puppeteer This usually works well for a non-JS environment, but when you try serving a pre-rendered content to a client with a real JS enabled browser, the page renders, but then once the JS files load, the React components don’t know where to mount. This causes a big pile of errors in the console, therefore this solution wasn’t really helpful in our case. Introducing SSR The benefit of SSR is that all the API requests stay within a local network, as they are handled on a machine, or a function, running inside a VPC, there is no latency when communicating with a Lambda, like the one between the client and the origin server, unless there is a cold start in question. An additional benefit is that we get back an HTML snapshot, to which React components know how to mount, once the JS files are loaded. And finally, we don’t need that big JS bundle and the API calls to display the page. It can be loaded asynchronously, and it won’t block the main thread. Basically, SSR solves most of our challenges…well, kind of. At this point we got to here: No more API calls, and we actually get to see our page before that big JS bundle is downloaded. But if you look closely at the first request, it took almost 2 seconds to return a response, for the document, from the server. Let’s take a deeper look into this. Time to First Byte problem What’s happening here is that we are starting a node server, doing the SSR, with all the API requests and JS processing and then returning the final output. However, the problem is that on average this takes around 1-2s. Our SSR server needed to do all that work, before returning the first byte of the response to the user. This causes a very long wait time for the first byte. It’s almost the same amount of work, just that work is not happening on the client side, but on the server side inside the SSR workflow. Wait. You said server ? Isn’t this supposed to be serverless? We sure did try doing SSR in a Lambda function but it turned out to be a very intensive process (you need to drastically increase the allocated memory size to get more CPU resources), plus the cold starts we talked about before... So for now, the ideal setup is using the node server to download the site’s SSR bundle and render it. Back to the SSR results: looking at the film strip, the timing is not much different than what we had when we were doing client-side rendering. Blank screen for 2.5 seconds 😡 Although it might not look like we’ve achieved any progress, we actually have! We got an HTML snapshot with all the content, which is ready to be hydrated by React, and there is no need to do any API calls since all the required data is already injected into the HTML. The only problem is that generating this HTML snapshot takes too long. At this point, we could either invest more time into optimizing SSR or simply cache the output and serve the snapshot from something like Redis cache — which is exactly what we did. SSR Caching Once a user visits a Webiny website, we first check a centralized Redis cache to see if we have an existing HTML snapshot, and serve it from the cache. On average this brought down the “time to first byte” to a range of 200–400ms. This is where we actually started seeing massive improvements in speed. Right from the first view, the user gets to see the page content under a second. Let’s have a deeper look at the waterfall chart now: The red line shows the 800ms mark, which is when the page content is fully loaded. You can also see that the JS bundles were loaded at around 1.3s mark, but that didn’t affect the time in which the user got his content. The same applies to the API calls and the main thread processing, both are no longer required to display the page content. Note that the timings on the JS bundle, API calls, and main thread still matter, as that is the time by which page becomes “interactive”, but for crawlers and user’s perception of “speed” — it doesn’t matter. In case this was a “dynamic” page, say it was displaying a signed-in user in the header. The SSR would load a generic page, meaning the one where the user is not signed in, and only after the page, JS bundle, and API calls are processed ( ), the header would change and display the signed-in user. time to interactive A few weeks later we discovered that our proxy wasn’t closing the client connection at in right place when it was triggering the SSR as a background process. A single-line fix brought down the TTFB to 50–90ms mark and visual complete to ~600ms. However, there is another problem … There are only two hard things in Computer Science: cache invalidation and naming things. — Phil Karlton The cache invalidation is definitely true. Either you have a very short TTL and refresh the cache often, introducing infrequent long page load times, or have a mechanism to invalidate the cache based on certain events. In our case to get around this problem we actually introduced a short TTL or 30s, but also we added the option to serve stale cache, and at the same time refresh the content in the background. This way we offset any latency and cold-start issues that Lambdas might introduce. This works as follows: a user visits a Webiny website, we check the HTML cache, and if there is an existing snapshot, we will serve that. The snapshot can even be several days old. What we do is we serve that old snapshot to the visitor in those few 100ms, and in parallel, we trigger a job to generate a new snapshot and replace the old cache. That job usually takes just a few seconds, as we also introduced a mechanism to always have a bucket of pre-warmed lambdas, so we don’t pay the big cold-start cost when generating new snapshots. This way we always serve from the cache and the content is refreshed on subsequent visits, in case the cache is older than 30 seconds. This is definitely an area where we will introduce additional improvements, for example, we are looking at adding the option to automatically refresh the cache every time a user publishes a page. However, this is not a silver bullet. For example, say you have a homepage that displays the last 3 blog posts, and you create and publish a new post, technically the cache will be generated for that new post only, but the homepage will still be stale. We are still investigating the best approach, but so far the focus was on sorting out the performance challenges. At this point, we believe we did quite a good job. Summary Our starting point was a client-side rendering, where, on average, the visual complete metric was 3.3s. Now the visual complete is ~600ms. And what’s also important, there is no more spinner. SSR is the key player here, but without proper caching, you are just moving timing metrics from the client to the server, so the end time to “visually complete” won’t change much. SSR has the additional benefit of offsetting the CPU bottleneck on older mobile devices, which is something we have not measured in this test, but the current implementation we have should get around that problem as well. Overall, doing SSR is hard, and with serverless on top, it makes it even harder. The solution requires code changes, additional infrastructure, as well as an intelligent caching mechanism; but the benefits are great, and most importantly, your users will appreciate them. The Nice-to-Haves Improves quality of life, but can still begrudgingly live without them. Prettier - Code formatter is in a similar vein to ESLint described above, in that its purpose is to try to enforce and standardize coding style, with this specific plugin allowing it to be used directly within the editor. The thing that separates Prettier from ESLint is instead of listing the error (although ESLint does have a ), Prettier provides a reprinted version of how the code should be formatted. This is great when used with workflows, as it can automatically reformat the code and save it to match required styles with every . Prettier --fix option pre-commit git commit It should be noted that Prettier is primarily focuses on formatting, so a for code quality. In addition to that, Prettier can be for single command execution. For such increasingly-rare occasions, you can use this extension to right-click within VS Code and have it open with either the default browser or an alternative browser you have installed. No more changing directories in your shell just to open up a single file. vscode-styled-components Alright, I’ll admit this is among of the more niche ones on the list seeing as it’s an extension for a specific library designed for use with another specific library ( with React). That said, if you’re among those using styled-components, then this extension is almost definitely a must-have. styled-components Since styled-components are written within a template literal, many syntax highlighters will highlight the whole section as a quotation. With this extension, you can still retain full CSS-like code highlighting within the template. Life is good. VSCode Great Icons Adds a bunch of great file icons to VS Code. What else needs to be said? (100+) Bookmarks Ideally your code is always modular, readable and terse enough that you never struggle to see the entirety of a given file. If an imperfect moment were to arise where this was not the case, for reasons not your own, it’s nice to be able to put in a few quick bookmarks to quickly jump back-and-forth between. One Monokai Theme I have a working theory that ugly things increase eyestrain. Still finalizing the dissertation on this one. The default VS Code theme is actually not that bad. However, if the app you are going to be living in all day can easily be made a little better and be given a bit more personality, why not. Needless to say custom themes are a dime-a-dozen, but something about this one just clicks for me, for completely subjective and indefensible reasons of course. Between the Digital Marketing course and the coaching program I’m doing atm, I haven’t had the time to sit down and write a proper article. Instead, here’s a medley of thoughts about Love, The Mind, and Being that have been bouncing around in my head. What Is Love? , rings a remix of the ‘90s band Haddaway’s single on my Instagram feed. What is love? Baby don’t hurt me don’t hurt me no more So, what love? Is it when a baby doesn’t hurt you? is The love we hear about in songs or see in movies isn’t love. It’s an attachment. Attachment and exploitation of a love object. What can the object give me? Attention, time, sex… but in the real world, we soon find the other person can’t do that for us, and the fear creeps in—the fear of losing the object that provides the illusion of love. Instead of facing the reality of unfulfilled expectations, we simultaneously try to fix ourselves so that the person finds us loveable and adjusts the person to fit our preferred criteria. , then we’d be happy; we would feel loved. We get tricked into believing love can be outsourced. So, the fear of losing the love object that provides the illusion of love begins to enter. When we don’t love ourselves, looking for love on the outside always gives us anxiety. “Will they like me?” is the focus, whilst the real question is do I like myself? If they were just a little more to our liking . . Love is a state, not a feeling. Love is independent of love objects. Love is free. It is always there, patiently waiting to be uncovered. It’s a state you began in and will die in. Love is an energy that cannot be created or destroyed. You don’t need to generate love, find love, or get love. It can only be gently uncovered behind the layers of conditioning put upon your heart. The paradox is that no one can give you love - you cannot get love; you can only LOVE. This is an important distinction ❤️ Stuff Like This ; your mind whispers when you dare to dream beyond the confines you’ve been placed within. But what if it does happen? What if it’s right there, waiting for you to see through the lies of your mind? What if all sorts of things happen to all sorts of people, including you? Your mind is just telling you a story based on past experiences. It pretends to grasp the entirety of everything: how the world operates, what other people are like, and what you are like. (Seriously, ask your mind anything, and it’ll come up with a response! - how silly is that? It’ll never say, gosh, I don’t know, and leave it at that. It’ll begin wondering and try to figure out a response to soothe itself that it does know everything). It claims to have all the answers when, in reality, it’s barely scratching the surface. Stuff like this doesn’t happen to people like me We cling to the illusion of self-knowledge, yet the truth is we don’t fully understand why we are the way we are. Sure, we concoct explanations and reasons—neatly logical delusions—but at the core, we simply exist as we are, inexplicable even to ourselves. And the mind? It can’t accept this mystery. Here’s another annoying feature of the mind Have you ever noticed how, when you ignore a certain thought or narrative, your mind scrambles to find something else to occupy you with? It will use to reel you back in. When you feel restless, it’s your mind bouncing around, desperate to divert your focus away from the present back to itself. The mind thrives on your attention; it feeds off it. And we feed it generously, distracted from the now, lost in thoughts of past hurts and stories. anything The more intense the emotion tied to a particular memory, the more your mind returns to that story. It never goes back to the happiest moment of your life over and over again as much as it revisits the moments of hurt, unfairness, and sadness.   These negative experiences have a stronger gravitational pull for evolutionary reasons, but it doesn’t mean we should leave it at that. Happiness only exists in the present moment. I know it’s such a cliche, but seriously - where is your past, right now? Where is it? It’s in your fucking mind, obstructing you from being here, right now, as you are. The only way these stories stay alive is if you keep feeding them your attention. Oh, yes, you do. When we say we don’t have control over our attention, what we really mean is that we haven’t trained a skill of controlled attention. But I don’t control my attention… The good news is that attention is a trainable skill,  but the bad thing is that it takes effort. It requires overcoming the automaticity of your mind. It’s tough! I’m going through this training right now with the coaching course I’m doing, and it’s painfully obvious how automated every aspect of my being is. One of the practices we’re supposed to do daily is a 15-minute contemplation exercise. I won’t go into the details, but my mind would literally do nothing else but concentrate. It brings stuff I haven’t thought of in , to escape focusing for 15 minutes. considerable years anything In fact, I sat down to do the exercise but ended up editing this article! This is the state of affairs of my mind, and most minds, I’d argue, is that 15 minutes out of 16 hours that we are awake is too much for the mind to handle. We have close to 0 control of that freak inside our heads. The Crazy Mind, Artificial Love and Happiness of Being

I sold my startup because of bugs: I wish I had this serverless repository! In 2021, I built a startup called Linvo, a LinkedIn automation tool. It generated good money but also had a high burn rate. I can tell you that I lost most of my money as a young entrepreneur (entirely bootstrapped) 😆 The problem with my system is that it kept on failing; I am not the best programmer in the world, but let me elaborate. Puppeteer Sucks Your Memory Linvo went into a few iterations during its lifetime. I used the tech that I know: React and NestJS. Basically, any automated cloud scraping goes into making tasks and then solving them. It looks something like this: Cron runs every 10 minutes, looks for new stuff to do, and sends it to the queue. Workers take tasks from the queue and process them. Save everything to the DB. This is a very naive solution that was running on multiple EC2 (AWS) and Redis. In theory, it should work - Yes, you would need to scale the workers horizontally, but that was not my problem. I started to experience something else - memory leaks. As you probably know, - a chromium automated browser, is heavy (same as Chrome on your computer), and I was running lots of them - they sucked both my memory - causing the servers to stop working and taking the internet bandwidth. Puppeteer Needed a Solution Refactoring sounds like - yeah, let's do that, but my Intercom support was filled with support tickets (I already had many users), and I knew I had to create some crazy refactoring. I had an idea for a solution - let's use AWS lambda. Lambda start Do the task Die (most of the time) It doesn't suck your internet. It will die and not cause a memory leak. It's a bit more expensive because Lambdas were not meant to run indefinitely—that would remove the whole concept, but I was desperate. (Well, the good thing is that you don't need to think about scale.) Here is the new infrastructure: Event bridge cron running every 1 minute (that's the minimum) Lambda that creates six events for the queue (making it like the cron runs every 10 seconds) SQS queue (bye bye, Redis) Lambdas shooting out with auto-scaling (yay?) Vendor Locking As you probably understand from the context - now I am all in with AWS, but I didn't mind - only how I would test it on my computer. Back in the day, I used . It's almost the same as to create the entire environment quickly. Sam Serverless And yes, they do bring some local testing. They can take your lambdas and turn them into endpoints! Yay! But I was using Event Bridge, SQS, and Lambdas. That was just not possible. I have encountered . It was supposed to help me build an entire AWS stack on my computer, but many things were not supported back then, such as Lambda layers. And I was overwhelmed in using it. localstack So I started to create my "own" infrastructure where I deployed one "test" SQS on AWS and ran local code with it (a function that calls a function), and it was - bad. I did not work well in production; I felt like the word was squeezing up on me back in the day. I just wanted to get rid of this startup; I even offered it to people for free, taking the customers and rid myself of that problem. Long story short, I managed to sell the system for a low price, but lately, I discovered something interesting. Winglang - Typescript-like dialect for the Cloud I guess my pain was real, and even though I would be happier to find this back in the day - I am glad it's alive today. helps you to build the same cloud infrastructure as I used, but the nice thing is: Winglang It doesn't require you to use any configuration files. You basically define the entire infrastructure with code (you can check their entire preflight and inflight documentation). You can run it locally - thank you, god, 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 with all the infrastructure included. You can deploy it to any cloud provider, and you don't have to use AWS. They can literally generate any Terraform or cloud formation for easy deployment. I talked to the founder of Winglang, Elad (builder of the famous CDK), and he said something that made me twitch. I Sold My Startup Because of Bugs: I Wish Winglang Existed Back Then

Feeling trapped in a rut can make you want to make a drastic change, like starting a new profession, going on a dream vacation, or adopting a drastically healthier lifestyle. Major shifts, however, are typically unsettling. Quite pricey, too. As well as challenging. Therefore, you do nothing but wallow in your miserable rut, daydreaming of a radical change but failing to bring about any such transformation. In what ways can you end this pattern? The solution is quite obvious to experts. At least in the beginning, put your lofty goals on hold and focus on making little adjustments. Start your new life off right by doing a plethora of tiny things that will broaden your horizons, boost your energy, inspire your creativity, and teach you what works and what doesn't. Get some exercise—even ten minutes will do Endorphins are the hormones your body releases when you exercise; they reduce pain and tension. You've probably heard of them. However, exercise has far-reaching effects on your body beyond just releasing feel-good chemicals. Increased levels of the feel-good neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine are another benefit of physical activity. Plus, your heart rate gets higher during activity, which means more oxygen gets to your brain. The benefits of a well-oxygenated brain are numerous and well-documented, and they include the alleviation of anxiety and sadness. Shawn Achor references an intriguing study on this in his book, The Happiness Advantage. I will be citing this book extensively in this piece; it is, by the way, an excellent read. Participants in the study were divided into three groups, each of which received treatment for depression by medication, exercise, or a hybrid approach. I was astonished by the findings of this study. Despite initial improvements in happiness levels being comparable across all three groups, the results of the follow-up assessments showed significant differences: What should I do today? Relocate to a more convenient location for employment (or engage in remote work) How we feel on the way to work each day might have a significant effect on our mood. Given that this is something we do on a daily, five-day rotation, it seems to reason that its cumulative effect would diminish our happiness over time. There is a negative correlation between commute time and happiness, according to multiple research. A study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health stated that people's happiness with their jobs and lives tends to decline as their commute times increase. Additionally, long commutes have negative effects on people's physical health and lead to a lack of physical exercise. So, it's not surprising that having a short commute (the distance between your home and your desk) has a significant impact on your happiness and well-being. Remote workers report 20% higher levels of happiness compared to their in-office colleagues, according to a survey conducted by Tracking Happiness in 2023. Nearly 9 in 10 people who participated in our most recent survey about the state of remote work reported favourable experiences with remote work, and nearly all of those people (98 percent) expressed a desire to continue working remotely at least occasionally during their careers. "The groups were then tested six months later to assess their relapse rate," explains Achor. A third of people who had taken antidepressants on their own had relapsed. With a recurrence rate of 31%, the combination group was just marginally better off. However, the exercise group's shockingly low recurrence rate of 9% was the most shocking. Relaxation, enhanced cognitive function, and a more positive self-image are all benefits of regular physical activity. Even in the absence of observable changes, regular exercise improved participants' self-esteem, according to research published in the Journal of Health Psychology. Optimal aspect? The Journal of Happiness Studies found that even 10 minutes of movement each day significantly increased participants' levels of happiness, so there's no need to swear off long runs or intense HIIT classes altogether if you want to live your best life. The American Psychological Association reports that not getting enough sleep has a host of negative health effects, including impaired focus and memory, metabolic disruption, and elevated stress hormone levels. It goes without saying that a poor night's sleep can have a significant effect on your mood, in addition to the obvious health effects of insufficient sleep ("People who chronically fail to get enough sleep may actually be cutting their lives short," according to the APA). Inadequate or bad sleep exacerbated emotional states, according to a study published in the journal Sleep that examined the sleep habits of 30,594 British individuals aged 16 and up over a 4-year period. In order to measure health-related quality of life, they compared those who slept more and better with those who did not utilise the frequently administered General Health Questionnaire (GHQ): Mental health professionals who complete an eight-week mindfulness-based cognitive therapy programme to increase psychological well-being show comparable changes on the GHQ, according to the study. "They are also on par with the typical enhancement in happiness demonstrated by Brits who win a medium-sized lottery two years subsequent to the win." Enjoy the company of loved ones Even for those who are naturally reserved, spending time with others is crucial to our well-being. Spending time with loved ones significantly improves our mood, according to multiple research. This is a quote from Daniel Gilbert, a happiness expert at Harvard University: "We are happy when we have family, we are happy when we have friends, and almost all the other things we think make us happy are actually just ways of getting more family and friends." I really like this explanation. One of the most extensive longitudinal studies ever conducted followed the lives of 268 men for 72 years under the direction of psychiatrist George Vaillant. He was asked about the lessons he had acquired from the men in an interview that took place in 2008. The answer from Vaillant: "That the only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people." He discussed the study's findings with Joshua Wolf Shenk of The Atlantic, who was interested in the men's social relationships and their impact on happiness: "No other variable, except defences, predicted late-life adjustment better than the men's relationships at age 47," says Wolf Shenk. "Good sibling relationships seem especially powerful: 93 percent of the men who were thriving at age 65 had been close to a brother or sister when younger." Go find a greenish area outside. Those of us who are cooped up at our desks all day long can rejoice: getting some fresh air doesn't require slaving away in the sun. The International Journal of Environmental Health Research found that a mere 20 minutes spent outdoors in a green area significantly improved participants' well-being. According to Hon Yuen, who was a co-author of the study, "some people may go to the park and just enjoy nature" (TIME). They are under no need to engage in strenuous physical activity. After you unwind and lessen your tension, you'll start to feel happier. Urban parks in Birmingham, UK, rather than Yosemite National Park, were visited by study participants, so there's no need to worry if the concept of finding a place green enough to be deemed "nature" seems far-fetched. For the majority of people, the ideal place to spend a warm, sunny weekend day is outside, close to the water, according to research out of the University of Sussex. Actually, people reported much higher levels of happiness when they were outside in natural settings as opposed to city dwellers. Temperature is an intriguing additional factor. According to studies published by the American Meteorological Society, human happiness is more affected by the present temperature than by factors such as wind speed and humidity or even by the day average temperature. Keep an eye on the forecast before you go outside for your 20 minutes of fresh air, because it was shown that happiness is maximised around 13.9°C (57°F).
