Startups Of The Year 2023: Asia Winners

One of the better books about financial education that I have read is Morgan Housel’s book, . This book started as a blog post that can be read . The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness here Some sharp insights in this book struck me, and I will discuss them in more detail in the following paragraphs. Investing is Not the Study of Finance But How People Behave With Money The premise of this book is that doing well with money has little to do with how smart you are and a lot to do with how you behave. And behaviour is hard to teach, even to really smart people. Ordinary people with no financial education can become wealthy if they employ behavioral skills that have nothing to do with standard measures of intelligence. Housel gives the example of , an American janitor, gas station attendant, philanthropist and investor, who gained a fortune of almost $8 million by investing patiently and living frugally. His investing strategy was simple, as he did not invest in companies he didn’t know about (technology companies or other hot stocks). Ronald Read His neighbors and family didn’t know how much money Read genuinely had. He donated a large part of his fortune to a library and a hospital in his testament. Both donations were the most significant donations the respective library and the hospital ever received. Then, there is the story of Richard Fuscone, former vice-chairman of Merrill Lynch, who declared personal bankruptcy after the 2008 global financial crisis came around. Fuscone borrowed massively to expand his mansion, with . “two swimming pools, two elevators, six fireplaces, 11 bathrooms and a seven-car garage” Ronald Read was patient; Richard Fuscone was greedy. That’s all it took to eclipse the massive education and experience gap between the two. The lesson here is not to be more like Ronald and less like Richard —though that’s not bad advice. The fascinating thing about these stories is how unique they are to finance. In what other industry does someone with no college degree, no training, no background, no formal experience, and no connections massively outperform someone with the best education, the best training, and the best connections? I struggle to think of any. There is no way that Ronald Read would have performed a heart transplant better than a Harvard-trained trained surgeon. Nor Read could have designed a better skyscraper than an architect. But these stories where an ordinary person can outperform others with much better education, background or connections, do happen in investing because how we behave around money is much more important than what we studied about money. We might believe that we think about money in a cold and detached manner as we would talk about mathematics or physics. However, money implies emotions, feelings, and behaviors, sometimes rational but all too often irrational. Financial Success, To An Extent, Is Driven By Luck We tend to attribute someone else’s failures to bad decisions, but when we talk about our failures, we usually believe they happened because of bad luck. After his son was born, Housel wrote him a letter: Some people are born into families that encourage education; others are against it. Some are born into flourishing economies encouraging of entrepreneurship; others are born into war and destitution. I want you to be successful, and I want you to earn it. But realize that not all success is due to hard work, and not all poverty is due to laziness. Keep this in mind when judging people, including yourself. Warren Buffet, one of the world’s wealthiest people, acknowledged that he had a significant privilege because, in his words, “ ,“ as many of the advantages we get in life, such as nationality, race, gender, health, are determined by chance. he won the ovarian lottery Being Rich Versus Being Wealthy Money has many ironies. Here’s an important one: wealth is what you don’t see. Someone driving a $100,000 car might be wealthy. But the only data point you have about their wealth is that they have $100,000 less than they did before they bought the car (or $100,000 more in debt). That’s all you know about them. Wealth is what you don’t see. Wealth is the nice cars not purchased. The diamonds not bought. The watches not worn, the clothes forgone, and the first-class upgrade declined. Wealth is financial assets that haven’t yet been converted into the stuff you see. The difference between being rich versus being wealthy is more than semantics. Being rich is about current income: someone driving a $100,000 car is most undoubtedly rich to afford to either buy it or the monthly payments. Being wealthy is about income not spent, the hidden richness, and it is far more valuable than visible richness. Too often, we are biased in our thinking about someone’s appearance. We all know people who look modest but don’t know their hidden wealth, whereas people who look rich might be barely scraping. After he died, Ronald Read became a sensation and cherished for his investments strategy. But his wealth was hidden while he was alive, so he was nobody’s financial role model then. We Don’t Make Money to Spend Money But to Have Options and Flexibility. There is no faster way to feel rich than to spend lots of money on really nice things. There’s no faster way to not be rich as well. That’s the paradox of wealth. And how to become wealthy? The only way to be wealthy is to not spend the money that you do have. It’s not just the only way to accumulate wealth; it’s the very definition of wealth. A few factors contribute to building wealth: income, investment returns, and savings rate. We might believe that we can’t truly control any of these variables, but we do. Sometimes, we might fall prey to “lifestyle inflation,” where we start spending more because our income increased. After all, wealth is income not spent. You can build wealth without a high income, but there is no way you can build wealth without a high savings rate. When most people say they want to be a millionaire, what they might actually mean is, “I’d like to spend a million dollars.” And that is literally the opposite of being a millionaire. Gaining Money Versus Keeping Money Getting money is about taking action and risks. Keeping money is about opposite skills, playing it safe, lots of inaction, and requires humility and fear that what you’ve made can be taken away from you just as fast. It requires frugality and an acceptance that at least some of what you’ve made is attributable to luck, so past success can’t be relied upon to repeat indefinitely. Recognize When We Have Enough The hardest financial skill is getting the goalpost to stop moving. Modern capitalism is a pro at two things: generating wealth and generating envy. Perhaps they go hand in hand; wanting to surpass your peers can be the fuel of hard work. But life isn’t any fun without a sense of enough. After a strenuous and arduous road, we are there. We reached all the things we dreamt about, and we came on top. But why, why should we stop now? We worked so far and had some lucky combinations, so why not accumulate more? Why should we be denied a bigger slice of the pie? And so, the vicious cycle begins, moving our goals further and further away until, as king Midas learnt, excessively loving the riches leaves no space for richness in our lives. Happiness, as it’s said, is just results minus expectations. Which means it’s a battle that can never be won, or that the only way to win is to not fight to begin with — to accept that you might have enough, even if it’s less than those around you. Good Investing is Boring Warren Buffett is a great investor, but his wealth is not just because of being a great investor. There are far better investors than him. His wealth, apart from being a great investor, is driven by the number of years for which he has been investing now – 75 years. His skill is investing, but his secret is time. Of his USD 84.5 billion net worth, USD 84.2 billion was accumulated after the age of 50, i.e. after investing for 40+ years. Good investing strategies are not about wild returns but about obtaining decent returns over decades, and that is how Ronald Read got his fortune from his meager salary. The keyword is “decades,” as the exponential function of compounding interest produces astonishments over decades. The longer the decades, the higher the returns. Linear thinking is so much more intuitive than exponential thinking. Michael Batnick once explained it. If I ask you to calculate 8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8+8 in your head, you can do it in a few seconds (it’s 72). If I ask you to calculate 8x8x8x8x8x8x8x8x8, your head will explode (it’s 134,217,728). Things That Have Never Happened Before Happen All the Time We should know that by now, as 2020 taught us. When we make plans, we would be wise to plan for errors and unthinkables. Margin of Safety—you can also call it room for error—is the only effective way to safely navigate a world that is governed by odds, not certainties. While investing, we need to plan for error. What if our assets decline by 30% -40%? On paper, we might answer yes, but mentally? Can our family survive this? Looking over spreadsheets is not the same as looking into our spouse and children’s eye. Did we gamble their futures? It’s fine to save for a car, or a home, or for retirement. But it’s equally important to save for things you can’t possibly predict or even comprehend. We cannot underestimate the importance of an emergency fund, and I talked more about it in . another article Money Does Not Buy Happiness, Money Buys Freedom The highest form of wealth is the ability to wake up every morning and say, “I can do whatever I want today.” People want to become wealthier to make them happier. Happiness is a complicated subject because everyone’s different. But if there’s a common denominator in happiness—a universal fuel of joy—it’s that people want to control their lives. The ability to do what you want, when you want, with who you want, for as long as you want, is priceless. Having a bit of wealth means the possibility of taking time off from work when feeling burned out or sick, waiting for a good job instead of taking the first offer, handling an economic recession or medical bills, and freedom to grow roots to stay and wings to fly. Your personal experiences make up maybe 0.00000001% of what’s happened in the world but maybe 80% of how you think the world works. And so, our worldview is inherently biased because a financial strategy that might work for a married couple with no children is different from the strategy of a retired widow/er, a teenager’s strategy, or a single parent with children. Personal finance is deeply personal, so we should never imitate someone else’s financial strategy that has a different time horizon than us. Beware of taking financial cues from people playing a different game than you are. In this article, I didn’t even manage to touch all the wonderful ideas from this book. To fully understand them and this section, some understanding of the Dutta-Barua protocol [17] is required. While a full review of the protocol is out of scope for this work, for the purposes of this section, the most important thing is to understand that each KeyAgree() and Join() operation is associated with an instance id d. This instance id is incremented for each of those operations and can never be reused. Note that d can be regarded as a nonce: while it is not random, it is never reused. Another example of a protocol that uses non-random nonces is Wireguard [24]. Both attacks described by Zhang et al. are carried out by one or multiple malicious users who are part of the Dutta-Barua group, that is they have successfully participated in the DuttaBarua key agreement in the past. In this sense, the premise of the DBGKA is already violated: The DBGKA protocol provides no security against malicious insiders. Nevertheless, one should take this form of attack seriously: An honest user - representing, for instance, an IoT device - might at some point be compromised and become dishonest. Alternatively, he might have been dishonest all along, but his certificate is only revoked at a later stage. We will therefore discuss both attacks and show why they pose no threat to the LCMsec protocol. 1) First Attack: The first attack is carried out by a malicious leaving user who has been part of a previous successful DuttaBarua KeyAgreement() operation during which he has made some preparation for the attack by storing some of the protocol messages. When the Leave() operation is executed to expel this user from the group, Zhang et. al. show that the attacker can compute the new session key using the values he stored earlier. However, as we understand the DBGKA, the purpose of the Leave() operation is not to expel dishonest users, but as a way for honest users to leave. When an honest user leaves in this way, it is possible for the remaining users to efficiently agree on a new key. If an honest user, on the other hand, does not execute the Leave() operation, a new KeyAgreement() operation has to performed, which is a lot less efficient for large groups. To expel a malicious user, the remaining users instead execute the KeyAgree() operation amongst themselves – this way, the attack is bypassed entirely. Note that in the current version of LCMsec, we do not include a mechanism for certificate revocation or expelling users from the group and make no use of the Leave() operation, so this attack does not concern us. While cost-to-goal h∗ is the best possible heuristic for algorithms like A* (up to tiebreaking) in terms of nodes being expanded, for GBFS, h∗ does not necessarily yield optimal solutions. . A* explores all the nodes with f(s) < f ∗ (s) = g(s)+h∗ (s) and some with f(s) = f∗ (s) = g(s) + h∗ (s), so nodes can only be saved with optimal f∗ (s) = g(s) + h∗ (s). In fact, when given h∗ as the heuristic, only nodes s with f(s) = f∗ (s) are expanded. Depending on the strategy of tie-breaking, the solution path can be found in the minimal number of node expansions or take significantly longer (e.g., in lower g-value first exploration of the search frontier). Any heuristic other than h∗ is either overestimating, and, therefore, may lead to either non-optimal solutions in A*, or weaker than h∗, leading to more nodes being expanded. Proof Even if h∗ is given, GBFS is not guaranteed to be optimal. Consider the following graph with five nodes A, B, C, D, E, and w(A, B) = 8, w(B, E) = 3, w(A, C) = 2, w(C, D) = 4, w(D, E) = 4, and h ∗ (A) = 10, h∗ (B) = 3, h∗ (C) = 8, h∗ (D) = 4, h∗ (E) = 0 (see Figure 2), initial node s0 = A, goal node E ∈ S∗. The numbers are the actual costs and the red numbers are the exact heuristic function. For finding a path from node A to node E, GBFS would return (A, B, E) following the heuristic function. However, the path (A, C, D, E) has cost 10 instead of 11. 8.3 Theory Below, we prove the claim in made in Experimental section stating that if a heuristic h is strictly optimally efficient for A* search, then it is also strictly optimally efficient for GBFS. We carry the proof by induction with respect to the number of expanded states. At the initialization (step 0) the claim trivially holds as the Open list contains just a root node and the set of inequalities is empty. 8.4 Optimally efficient heuristic might not exists for GBFS Consider the following graph in Figure 3 with four nodes A, B, C, D,, and w(A, B) = 1, w(B, D) = 1, w(A, C) = 1, w(A, D) = 9, w(B, C) = 9, and h∗ (A) = 0, h∗ (B) = 1, h∗ (C) = 1, h∗ (D) = 2 where A is the goal state and D is the initial state. We can see that for GBFS, the perfect heuristic does not exist for D. On expansion, the GBFS algorithm will put A and B to the open list with heuristic values h(A) = 0 and h(B) = 1. GBFS takes A from the open list and checks if it is a goal state. Since A is goal state, GBFS terminates returning path (D,A) as a solution. However, this is not the optimal path as a better (optimal) solution exists (D, B, A). Since the definition of optimal ranking requires the inequalities to hold for this optimal path, in GBFS, the perfect heuristic does not exist for all initial states. The problem can be fixed if the definition of optimal ranking is changed to consider two cases in the merit function f(s) = αg(s) + βh(s): α > 0 and β > 0 and α = 0 and β > 0 . In the first case, the optimal ranking should be defined with respect to the "optimal path" (this is the A*); in the latter case, it should be the path with minimal number of expansions. With GBFS, the user simply wants to find a solution but not care about its optimality. With this change, the heuristic function will exist for Figure 3. 8.5 Training set with multiple solution paths with the same length of the plan The behavior of the learned heuristic function depends on the composition of the training set, which is illustrated below on a simple grid problem. The agent starts at position (4,4) and has to move to the goal position (0,0). There are no obstacles and the agent can only move one tile down or one tile left (the effects on his positions are either (-1,0) or (0,-1)), the cost of the action is one. The number of different solutions path grows exponentially with the size of the grid and all solution path has the same cost (for problem of size 5x5, there are 70 solutions). This problem is interesting, since merit function in A* with optimal heuristic function (cost to goal) is constant, equal to 8, for all states. For the size of the grid (4,4), the heuristic is determined by a table with 25 values. Below, these values are determined by minimizing the proposed loss for A* algorithm with logistic loss surrogate by BFGS (with all zeros as initial solution). Since the loss function is convex, BFGS finds the solution quickly. In the first case, the training set contains one solution path ([4, 4], [3, 4], [2, 4], [1, 4], [0, 4], [0, 3], [0, 2], [0, 1], [0, 0]), where the agent first goes left and then down. The learnt heuristic values h is shown in Table 2. An A* search using these heuristic values will first always take action moving the agent to left and then down. When moving down, the agent does not have another choice. Notice that the heuristic values of many states are not affected by the optimization, because they are not needed to effectively solve the problem. In the second case, the training set contains two solution paths: the first is in Table 2 and in the second table 3, the agent goes first down and then left. The learnt heuristic values are shown in 3. An A* search will now face tie at state (4,4), since states (3,4) and (4,3) have the same heuristic value. But the presence of the tie does not affect the optimal efficiency of the search, as A* will always expand states on one of the optimal path from the training set. Finally let’s consider a case, where all 70 possible solutions are in the training set. The learned heuristic values are shown in Table 4. Rank of heuristic values "roughly" corresponds to cost to goal. The reason, why some states are preferred over the others despite their true cost-to-goal being the same is that they appear in more solution paths. As shown in Table 4, the A* search with learnt heuristic values is strictly optimally efficient. 8.6 Baseline Comparison to breadth-first search The fraction of solved problems for breadth-first search (5stime limit as used by solvers in the paper) is shown in Table 5. 8.7 Training Details For the grid domains, ADAM [26] training algorithm was run for 100 × 20000 steps for the grid domains.The experiments were conducted in the Keras-2.4.3 framework with Tensorflow-2.3.1 as the backend. While all solvers were always executed on the CPU, the training used an NVIDIA Tesla GPU model V100-SXM2-32GB. Forward search algorithms were given 10 mins to solve each problem instance. For the PDDL domains, the training consumed approximately 100 GPU hours and evaluation consumed 1000 CPU hours.All training and evaluation were done on single-core Intel Xeon Silver 4110 CPU 2.10GHz with a memory limit of 128GB. The training algorithm AdaBelief [63] was allowed to do 10000 steps on the CPU. We emphasize though, that the training time does not include the cost of creating the training set.

Optimize Planning Heuristics to Rank, not to Estimate Cost-to-Goal: Appendix

I often cringe at such listicles but here I am writing one. I cringe because humanity keeps finding the same principles to be true and yet every time we discover it, it feels new. Perhaps we enjoy reading life lessons other people share as a way to make sure we’ve found the same things to be true. I know that a younger version of me wouldn’t care about this because she thought she knew better and the future me would think I still had so much to learn. I won’t tell you anything you don’t already know. I’m writing this as a self-reflection, as a thinking-out-loud kind of thing. And I hope that some things will resonate. 1. If my thinking is black-and-white, it means I don’t know enough about the topic I probably saw something in passing and tricked myself into thinking I had an opinion. Black-and-white thinking doesn’t work in the real world because everything in life is context-dependent. 2. Judging is easier than empathy It requires less mental effort to condemn than to think. — Emma Goldman Even though there are evolutionary reasons for judgment, in terms of subjective experience it creates a sense of separation — either more or less than someone else. “A man who judges himself inferior superior or even equal to another does not understand reality.” — Buddha 3. I‘m (mostly) not rational I live in a world that requires me to pretend I’m rational alongside everybody else. But most of my decisions and opinions are cognitive biases, crony beliefs, mimetic desires and unconscious processing of info appearing in my conscious mind that I then rationalize. 4. The inner processes are ever-shifting Don’t expect to arrive there or get stuck on the right way to think/do/be. Life is fluid. There’s more than one way to deal with everything. Practice saying I’m changing my mind instead of I changed my mind. Minor detail, major mindset difference. 5. Quality over quantity friendships To foster a friendship, you need to invest time. Because friendships get built on shared experiences, investing time in random people takes away resources from friends you do care about. “Remote relationships cost you real relationships. Every minute you spend cultivating relationships with people through a screen is a minute you’re not deepening relationships with people you can actually see, touch and smell.” (Nat Eliason) 6. Travelling is fun until you wake up to realize you don’t have stability I spent the last 5 years travelling/living in SE Asia with short trips back to Europe. But that cost me stability and building a network. I have family here, friends over there, community somewhere else entirely. It’s too scattered. Quality life requires both stability and adventure. 7. Be wary of fake dopamine hits There are many things masquerading as doing that waste time. Avoid mental masturbation. 8. You can’t earn self-worth because it’s free It’s like trying to earn oxygen. You can’t, oxygen is. Don’t spend time earning what’s inherent. 9. Most advice is too sanitized to work. I already talked about it here. Less reading vague advice from people online and more of finding mentors or community who are going through the same thing you are. 10. Serendipity masquerades as a skill Risk and luck are doppelgangers. NOTHING in life happens solely due to individual effort. The world is too complex for all of your actions to dictate 100% of your outcomes. - Morgan Housel I see many successful people preaching how hard they worked. I believe them. The part they struggle to acknowledge though is 100s if not 1000s of factors that had nothing to do with them. Life is a dance between you and the Universe. Don’t be too delusional to acknowledge that. 11. No one’s thinking about you Not quite true because the higher you rise, the more people feel obliged to have an opinion about you. Don’t waste time on bullshit that are other people’s opinions. If you wouldn’t ask for their advice, don’t take the criticism. 12. Stay in touch with your body In a world run by talking heads, listen to yourself/intuition/your body. I don’t care what diet, exercise routine, investment vehicle or productivity hack is trending. You can’t think your way into a better life. Doing as ‘thought leaders’ advice will make you temporarily happy because your actions will be socially accepted by the tribe but you get further from yourself. 13. Be careful when giving advice Not just unsolicited advice (nobody cares what you think unless they ask). Most people ask for advice to shift responsibility onto you or pretend (for themselves) that they want to do something about their situation. If someone keeps asking for advice but doesn’t act on it, stop giving advice. In the same vein — do not take advice from people who haven’t done the inner work. They will push their narrative and beliefs on you. There isn’t enough self-awareness and empathy there to advise well. 14. Life is a paradox “Life is not a problem to be solved. It’s a paradox to experience. You can believe one thing and also believe its opposite.” — Derek Sivers Two or more things are true at the same time. 15. People are not what they show, but what they don’t show Everybody’s hiding something. Fear, insecurity, secrets… As the , humans have 3 faces: CIA found Public self (how we want to appear to others) Private self (what your closest confidants know about you) Secret self (side to you you almost never share with anyone). When you judge someone as successful, you’re looking at their public self whilst comparing your private or secret selves to them. That’s why you feel bad — the gap feels too large. I used to work with successful people and I will reiterate — EVERYONE has a private and secret self they don’t show. And there’s some really fucked up stuff in there too. 16. Taking responsibility “There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, the responsibility lies with you.” — J.K. Rowling This is hands down the best decision I’ve made in my early twenties. Take responsibility. 17. Do therapy and coaching “You can’t read the label from inside the jar.” — Jordan Gray You can’t fully see yourself. Finding a good therapist or coach will help you see your blind spots. 18. Meditate to inspect reality Nothing is what it appears to be. Everything is made up of consciousness and there’s no separation between you and the outside world. Don’t complain Because nobody cares. The sooner you realize this the better it will be for others around you. Plus complainers attract complainers. 28. Intuitions about happiness are wrong I will be happy when… is the biggest illusion. The goalpost once you achieve something just keeps moving. Being honest with yourself and others brings you closer to the truth, connection and authenticity. You don’t owe anything to anyone — choose to give from love not obligation. Think about death more to put things into perspective. I feel compelled to say that living by all these lessons perfectly every moment of every day has happened 0 times in the last 30 years. Sometimes I act in a way closer to this and other times I’m as far off as you can get. I feel like a different person compared to a year ago. And wildly different to a 20-year-old me. He assured her that he did not doubt that her victuals were good and plentiful, and went on to say that he had made bold to bring her a trifle out of respect. It was some little time before Mrs. Pipkin would allow herself to be appeased;—but at last she permitted the garment to be placed on her shoulders. But it was done after a melancholy fashion. There was no smiling consciousness of the bestowal of joy on the countenance of the donor as he gave it, no exuberance of thanks from the recipient as she received it. Mrs. Hurtle, standing by, declared it to be perfect;—but the occasion was one which admitted of no delight. "It's very good of you, Mr. Crumb, to think of an old woman like me,—particularly when you've such a deal of trouble with a young 'un." "It's like the smut in the wheat, Mrs. Pipkin, or the d'sease in the 'tatoes;—it has to be put up with, I suppose. Is she very partial, ma'am, to that young baro-nite?" This question was asked of Mrs. Hurtle. "Just a fancy for the time, Mr. Crumb," said the lady. "They never thinks as how their fancies may well-nigh half kill a man!" Then he was silent for awhile, sitting back in his chair, not moving a limb, with his eyes fastened on Mrs. Pipkin's ceiling. Mrs. Hurtle had some work in her hand, and sat watching him. The man was to her an extraordinary being,—so constant, so slow, so unexpressive, so unlike her own countrymen,—willing to endure so much, and at the same time so warm in his affections! "Sir Felix Carbury!" he said. "I'll Sir Felix him some of these days. If it was only dinner, wouldn't she be back afore this, ma'am?" "I suppose they've gone to some place of amusement," said Mrs. Hurtle. "Like enough," said John Crumb in a low voice. "She's that mad after dancing as never was," said Mrs. Pipkin. "And where is it as 'em dances?" asked Crumb, getting up from his chair, and stretching himself. It was evident to both the ladies that he was beginning to think that he would follow Ruby to the music hall. Neither of them answered him, however, and then he sat down again. "Does 'em dance all night at them places, Mrs. Pipkin?" "They do pretty nearly all that they oughtn't to do," said Mrs. Pipkin. John Crumb raised one of his fists, brought it down heavily on the palm of his other hand, and then again sat silent for awhile. "I never knowed as she was fond o' dancing," he said. "I'd a had dancing for her down at Bungay,—just as ready as anything. D'ye think, ma'am, it's the dancing she's after, or the baro-nite?" This was another appeal to Mrs. Hurtle. "I suppose they go together," said the lady. Then there was another long pause, at the end of which poor John Crumb burst out with some violence. "Domn him! Domn him! What 'ad I ever dun to him? Nothing! Did I ever interfere wi' him? Never! But I wull. I wull. I wouldn't wonder but I'll swing for this at Bury!" "Oh, Mr. Crumb, don't talk like that," said Mrs. Pipkin. "Mr. Crumb is a little disturbed, but he'll get over it presently," said Mrs. Hurtle. "She's a nasty slut to go and treat a young man as she's treating you," said Mrs. Pipkin. "No, ma'am;—she ain't nasty," said the lover. "But she's crou'll—horrid crou'll. It's no more use my going down about meal and pollard, nor business, and she up here with that baro-nite,—no, no more nor nothin'! When I handles it I don't know whether its middlings nor nothin' else. If I was to twist his neck, ma'am, would you take it on yourself to say as I was wrong?" "I'd sooner hear that you had taken the girl away from him," said Mrs. Hurtle. "I could pretty well eat him,—that's what I could. Half past eleven; is it? She must come some time, mustn't she?" Mrs. Pipkin, who did not want to burn candles all night long, declared that she could give no assurance on that head. If Ruby did come, she should, on that night, be admitted. But Mrs. Pipkin thought that it would be better to get up and let her in than to sit up for her. Poor Mr. Crumb did not at once take the hint, and remained there for another half-hour, saying little, but waiting with the hope that Ruby might come. But when the clock struck twelve he was told that he must go. Then he slowly collected his limbs and dragged them out of the house. "That young man is a good fellow," said Mrs. Hurtle as soon as the door was closed. "A deal too good for Ruby Ruggles," said Mrs. Pipkin. "And he can maintain a wife. Mr. Carbury says as he's as well to do as any tradesman down in them parts." Mrs. Hurtle disliked the name of Mr. Carbury, and took this last statement as no evidence in John Crumb's favour. "I don't know that I think better of the man for having Mr. Carbury's friendship," she said. "Mr. Carbury ain't any way like his cousin, Mrs. Hurtle." "I don't think much of any of the Carburys, Mrs. Pipkin. It seems to me that everybody here is either too humble or too overbearing. Nobody seems content to stand firm on his own footing and interfere with nobody else." This was all Greek to poor Mrs. Pipkin. "I suppose we may as well go to bed now. When that girl comes and knocks, of course we must let her in. If I hear her, I'll go down and open the door for her." Mrs. Pipkin made very many apologies to her lodger for the condition of her household. She would remain up herself to answer the door at the first sound, so that Mrs. Hurtle should not be disturbed. She would do her best to prevent any further annoyance. She trusted Mrs. Hurtle would see that she was endeavouring to do her duty by the naughty wicked girl. And then she came round to the point of her discourse. She hoped that Mrs. Hurtle would not be induced to quit the rooms by these disagreeable occurrences. "I don't mind saying it now, Mrs. Hurtle, but your being here is ever so much to me. I ain't nothing to depend on,—only lodgers, and them as is any good is so hard to get!" The poor woman hardly understood Mrs. Hurtle, who, as a lodger, was certainly peculiar. She cared nothing for disturbances, and rather liked than otherwise the task of endeavouring to assist in the salvation of Ruby. Mrs. Hurtle begged that Mrs. Pipkin would go to bed. She would not be in the least annoyed by the knocking. Another half-hour had thus been passed by the two ladies in the parlour after Crumb's departure. Then Mrs. Hurtle took her candle and had ascended the stairs half way to her own sitting-room, when a loud double knock was heard. She immediately joined Mrs. Pipkin in the passage. The door was opened, and there stood Ruby Ruggles, John Crumb, and two policemen! Ruby rushed in, and casting herself on to one of the stairs began to throw her hands about, and to howl piteously. "Laws a mercy; what is it?" asked Mrs. Pipkin. "He's been and murdered him!" screamed Ruby. "He has! He's been and murdered him!" "This young woman is living here;—is she?" asked one of the policemen. "She is living here," said Mrs. Hurtle. But now we must go back to the adventures of John Crumb after he had left the house. He had taken a bedroom at a small inn close to the Eastern Counties Railway Station which he was accustomed to frequent when business brought him up to London, and thither he proposed to himself to return. At one time there had come upon him an idea that he would endeavour to seek Ruby and his enemy among the dancing saloons of the metropolis; and he had asked a question with that view. But no answer had been given which seemed to aid him in his project, and his purpose had been abandoned as being too complex and requiring more intelligence than he gave himself credit for possessing. So he had turned down a street with which he was so far acquainted as to know that it would take him to the Islington Angel,—where various roads meet, and whence he would know his way eastwards. He had just passed the Angel, and the end of Goswell Road, and was standing with his mouth open, looking about, trying to make certain of himself that he would not go wrong, thinking that he would ask a policeman whom he saw, and hesitating because he feared that the man would want to know his business. Then, of a sudden, he heard a woman scream, and knew that it was Ruby's voice. The sound was very near him, but in the glimmer of the gaslight he could not quite see whence it came. He stood still, putting his hand up to scratch his head under his hat,—trying to think what, in such an emergency, it would be well that he should do. Then he heard the voice distinctly, "I won't;—I won't," and after that a scream. Then there were further words. "It's no good—I won't." At last he was able to make up his mind. He rushed after the sound, and turning down a passage to the right which led back into Goswell Road, saw Ruby struggling in a man's arms. She had left the dancing establishment with her lover; and when they had come to the turn of the passage, there had arisen a question as to her further destiny for the night. Ruby, though she well remembered Mrs. Pipkin's threats, was minded to try her chance at her aunt's door. Sir Felix was of opinion that he could make a preferable arrangement for her; and as Ruby was not at once amenable to his arguments he had thought that a little gentle force might avail him. He had therefore dragged Ruby into the passage. The unfortunate one! That so ill a chance should have come upon him in the midst of his diversion! He had swallowed several tumblers of brandy and water, and was therefore brave with reference to that interference of the police, the fear of which might otherwise have induced him to relinquish his hold of Ruby's arm when she first raised her voice. But what amount of brandy and water would have enabled him to persevere, could he have dreamed that John Crumb was near him? On a sudden he found a hand on his coat, and he was swung violently away, and brought with his back against the railings so forcibly as to have the breath almost knocked out of his body. But he could hear Ruby's exclamation, "If it isn't John Crumb!" Then there came upon him a sense of coming destruction, as though the world for him were all over; and, collapsing throughout his limbs, he slunk down upon the ground. "Get up, you wiper," said John Crumb. But the baronet thought it better to cling to the ground. "You sholl get up," said John, taking him by the collar of his coat and lifting him. "Now, Ruby, he's a-going to have it," said John. Whereupon Ruby screamed at the top of her voice, with a shriek very much louder than that which had at first attracted John Crumb's notice. "Don't hit a man when he's down," said the baronet, pleading as though for his life. "I wunt," said John;—"but I'll hit a fellow when 'un's up." Sir Felix was little more than a child in the man's arms. John Crumb raised him, and catching him round the neck with his left arm,—getting his head into chancery as we used to say when we fought at school,—struck the poor wretch some half-dozen times violently in the face, not knowing or caring exactly where he hit him, but at every blow obliterating a feature. And he would have continued had not Ruby flown at him and rescued Sir Felix from his arms. "He's about got enough of it," said John Crumb as he gave over his work. Then Sir Felix fell again to the ground, moaning fearfully. "I know'd he'd have to have it," said John Crumb. Ruby's screams of course brought the police, one arriving from each end of the passage on the scene of action at the same time. And now the cruellest thing of all was that Ruby in the complaints which she made to the policemen said not a word against Sir Felix, but was as bitter as she knew how to be in her denunciations of John Crumb. It was in vain that John endeavoured to make the man understand that the young woman had been crying out for protection when he had interfered. Ruby was very quick of speech and John Crumb was very slow. Ruby swore that nothing so horrible, so cruel, so bloodthirsty had ever been done before. Sir Felix himself when appealed to could say nothing. He could only moan and make futile efforts to wipe away the stream of blood from his face when the men stood him up leaning against the railings. And John, though he endeavoured to make the policemen comprehend the extent of the wickedness of the young baronet, would not say a word against Ruby. He was not even in the least angered by her denunciations of himself. As he himself said sometimes afterwards, he had "dropped into the baro-nite" just in time, and, having been successful in this, felt no wrath against Ruby for having made such an operation necessary. There was soon a third policeman on the spot, and a dozen other persons,—cab-drivers, haunters of the street by night, and houseless wanderers, casuals who at this season of the year preferred the pavements to the poor-house wards. They all took part against John Crumb. Why had the big man interfered between the young woman and her young man? Two or three of them wiped Sir Felix's face, and dabbed his eyes, and proposed this and the other remedy. Some thought that he had better be taken straight to an hospital. One lady remarked that he was "so mashed and mauled" that she was sure he would never "come to" again. A precocious youth remarked that he was "all one as a dead 'un." A cabman observed that he had "'ad it awful 'eavy." To all these criticisms on his condition Sir Felix himself made no direct reply, but he intimated his desire to be carried away somewhere, though he did not much care whither. At last the policemen among them decided upon a course of action. They had learned by the united testimony of Ruby and Crumb that Sir Felix was Sir Felix. He was to be carried in a cab by one constable to Bartholomew Hospital, who would then take his address so that he might be produced and bound over to prosecute. Ruby should be even conducted to the address she gave,—not half a mile from the spot on which they now stood,—and be left there or not according to the account which might be given of her. John Crumb must be undoubtedly locked up in the station-house. He was the offender;—for aught that any of them yet knew, the murderer. No one said a good word for him. He hardly said a good word for himself, and certainly made no objection to the treatment that had been proposed for him. But, no doubt, he was buoyed up inwardly by the conviction that he had thoroughly thrashed his enemy. Thus it came to pass that the two policemen with John Crumb and Ruby came together to Mrs. Pipkin's door. Ruby was still loud with complaints against the ruffian who had beaten her lover,—who, perhaps, had killed her loved one. She threatened the gallows, and handcuffs, and perpetual imprisonment, and an action for damages amidst her lamentations. But from Mrs. Hurtle the policemen did manage to learn something of the truth. Oh yes;—the girl lived there and was—respectable. This man whom they had arrested was respectable also, and was the girl's proper lover. The other man who had been beaten was undoubtedly the owner of a title; but he was not respectable, and was only the girl's improper lover. And John Crumb's name was given. "I'm John Crumb of Bungay," said he, "and I ain't afeared of nothin' nor nobody. And I ain't a been a drinking; no, I ain't. Mauled 'un! In course I've mauled 'un. And I meaned it. That ere young woman is engaged to be my wife." "No, I ain't," shouted Ruby. "But she is," persisted John Crumb. "Well then, I never will," rejoined Ruby. John Crumb turned upon her a look of love, and put his hand on his heart. Whereupon the senior policeman said that he saw at a glance how it all was, but that Mr. Crumb had better come along with him,—just for the present. To this arrangement the unfortunate hero from Bungay made not the slightest objection. "Miss Ruggles," said Mrs. Hurtle, "if that young man doesn't conquer you at last you can't have a heart in your bosom." "Indeed and I have then, and I don't mean to give it him if it's ever so. He's been and killed Sir Felix." Mrs. Hurtle in a whisper to Mrs. Pipkin expressed a wicked wish that it might be so. After that the three women all went to bed.
