While we feel proud about our human abilities to think and communicate, there is a silent rise of machines, all set to surpass us. Elon Musk (aka real-life Iron man) is determined to change the destiny of machines. His OpenAI with its AI language model GPT-3 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is all set to mimic humans. GPT-3 is well trained on a whopping 175 billion parameters which is a hundred times more than its predecessor. The program finds patterns without any supervision and then uses to work on text prompts. Although OpenAI allows third parties to make the best use of GPT-3, in the long run, Elon Musk plans to make it commercial. Below it the list of awesome stuff GPT-3 can do: Chatbot to revive dead historical figures: It may not bring them back literally but it can be configured to a specific personality. It holds countless number of biographies, textbooks or autobiographies. You can learn philosophy from Socrates, rocket science from Elon Musk or poetry from John Keats. All thanks to GPT-3. Change writing style It can convert any text into a different style and present it to you. Got issues with compiling a complaint against your landlord? GPT-3 can convert it into a legal language. Be it changing tone of email from informal to formal, or writing an amazing essay in a particular format, GPT-3 got your back. They’ve totally pwned the latter by coopting the only non-human creatures on this planet that have successfully : CATS! colonized the internet Who made you and why (including ecologies of institutional, political, community actors, elders?) I’m the ! You know about ?  That’s where hoomans help maintain shared values through legal structures, to share the use and management of shared land-space? Well, I do the same: I’m a digital trust that upholds and maintains the agreed-on values of DisCOs. And unlike my boring normie DAO-cousin who’s always banging on about ‘trustlessness’, I help the hoomans trust each other while working together, and to figure out messy questions about value, fairness and power on their own. Value Sovereignty is how a commons manages its relationship to the market, making sure that it sticks to its ideals and values and doesn’t get swallowed up by mercantile hijinks! Long story short, a group that operates as a commons that also has some market activity can implement Value Sovereignty to keep itself from being subsumed by the dominant market logics. Unlike my DAO cousins, I can’t, don’t and won’t autoexecute Smart Contracts in lieu of the hoomans (that is SO Skynet, !) I encourage them to discuss and decide on how value is distributed before disbursing it. I’m the cyberfeline projection of the hooman values of any given DisCO. I get away with this by cuddling in federated collectives of no more than 20 people, where building real trust is my pajamas! Value Sovereignty jeez Karen If your ethereal form was to manifest into something what would you look like? Furry, four legged and salty?  I think we’ve already crossed that bridge, to be frank. How do you enable new approaches to decision making, resource distribution and cooperation between disparate people and/or agendas? By keeping it tiny, like me! First, let me explain a word that comes up a lot, like hairballs. “Trustless” is an invented term that is used to describe how allow people to exchange things (currencies, tokens – you know, play money, etc.) without knowing or trusting one another, relying on how the tech creates a non-paper trail of records that can’t be altered by the hoomans. I try to make it worth their while by leaving small “presents” that I find in the garden, even if I know they’d really prefer functional code and some neato data visualizations. Personally, I like it when art surprises me, so it’s good when the artworld finds ways to break out of stagnant habits and let others in – including me, the invisible digital glue that holds this family together. Hey interwebizens! I’m the and I’m speaking to you hoomans on behalf of the . DisCO CAT DisCO crew It seems we’ve been nominated for a due to our radical and innovative governance model rooted in and totally unlimited treats. We’re the punky cousin of (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) and hey, not going to lie to you, we aim to revolutionize the future of work and value. before you do, I encourage you to read the following interview and get to know us better: Noonie in the field of Economics feminist economics, the commons, decentralized technologies, the acknowledgment of care work and P2P practices, DAOs here but You can vote for us What is DisCO and why do we dance? DisCO is a set of organizational tools and practices for groups of people who want to work together in a cooperative, commons-oriented, and feminist economic form. Our model aims at ensuring that everybody can get together to reimagine economics from the bottom-up. DisCO incubates a new cooperative model for the digital age, incorporating care-based cultural practices and DLT-based tools with a global approach that is fair and inclusive, committed to equality, and to addressing the social and ecological challenges of today's world. It was indeed created to promote new economic models that are fair and inclusive. In other words, we are a bunch of starry-eyed people (led by a cat, of course) who strongly believe that DisCOs can be a useful tool for the precariat in self-organizing into purpose-oriented collectives to foster economic counterpowers against predatory capitalism. -What are you creating/building? The DisCO model is especially suited for coops (not the chickeny ones I like to barge into sometimes, but the democratically-owned associations of people). However, the cultural and structural features may be adapted to any kind of group or organization. , but this is it, very briefly: The whole model can be read here Instead of just tracking work according to the values upheld by the traditional market culture and its prices, “pro bono” work (commons-oriented voluntary work chosen by the people who form the group); “livelihood” work; and reproductive or care work. the DisCO model proposes three value streams: Shares in these three types of work determine how much is paid to each member on a monthly basis. The money to pay shares comes from the productive market-based work performed by the workers; the difference is that all work is visible, recognized and rewarded. In short, the more effort and care put into the collective by a member, the larger the member’s share. This is not a competitive scheme influenced by game theory. It’s a solidarity-based strategy for economic resistance that allows all members to contribute according to their capacity. All members create value of varying kinds. -How did you end up in DisCO? Do you like it? Aaaah, this is one of my favourite questions, I thought you’d never ask! OK hoomans, who You expect so little of your workplaces while they demand so much of you. Does anyone feel they have the luxury of questioning this dynamic? It’s very difficult to care about a job that cares so little about you. Sometimes the only way to get through it is to focus on small, personal victories that carry you through the day and remind you that other possibilities do exist. And believe it or not, that was the initial seed that would eventually grow into DisCO. In our own unique way, we’ve succeeded in failing at capitalism by upending its values and coming out on top (of the refrigerator, which all cats know is the “corner office”), and this is what has motivated us to find more hooman ways of working, and eventually success on our own terms.(If you want to know more about how we miserably failed at keeping a job and unknowingly jeopardized capitalist workplaces, read our .) among you hasn’t experienced the feeling of selling your soul or sacrificing your principles for a paycheck? Capitalism Failz article What tech are you most excited or passionate about right now and why? Whenever I see people talk about technology as a tool that might help us organize better, it becomes clear to me that the mightiest technology you hoomans have is conversations. This is how everything starts, how everything evolves, how things take shape and how decisions are made in a community. I know this is not the answer most would expect because it implies a shift of paradigm and way of thinking (an ontological shift, meow). Technology is here to help us do things better, but it’s ultimately we who have to decide whether we want to build better, fairer, more distributed futures and thus employ the existing technologies towards those purposes. What tech are you most worried about right now and why? While DAOs and the blockchain are being hailed as the next big disruption to our economic realities, this supposed disruption is still limited by several key factors. Blockchains and DAOs do nothing in practice to address the basic structural realities; in fact, they may even reinforce them. Early investors with their associated privileges, and highly tech-literate individuals are given undue advantage. The promise of decentralization fails as the networks and implementations form centrally around those investors. Meanwhile, the three pillars of present centralization and hierarchy, i.e., the patriarchy, capitalism and colonialism, are rarely acknowledged or addressed. This makes my tail twitch. Developed (and invested in) unchecked, the affordances of the blockchain and DAOs usher an political economy, where legal recourse, human realities and divergences from the code can simply be ignored, like I ignore the expensive toys in favor of cardboard boxes. To use disruptive technology for a wider benefit, we need _to leverage the positive aspects of DAOs for radically different economic and social ends. Our proposal is the DisCO form of distributed cooperative organization. could algorithmically executed countercultural alternatives If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? Ten million buys a lot of canned sardines, but I’m not a selfish cat, I want to make sure there’s enough to go around. I’d invest in myself, the DisCO CAT, and build this ecosystem of delightful cooperative practices and tools that make the hoomans a lot less stressed out and worried about their immediate precarity. I’d invest in the incubation (sounds toasty! I’m in!) of more to iterate and propagate and all the things that come with getting things done and building on lessons learned, because cats take risks and my whiskers are here for a reason. DisCO LABS What are you currently learning? I’m learning that (for some strange reason) the hoomans want to work together again after a few years of digital displacement, but it’s not easy to go back to the way things were. I’m learning that Covid-19 has separated the hoomans in more than just physical ways; they have lost a lot of faith in the information they see online; they get easily upset about how they can’t trust anymore, and they just want to return to “normal”, whatever that is. And I’m also learning that more hoomans than I even knew existed are working on new ways to be better, and do better, than before. Color me hopeful. What’s the best advice you’ve ever given someone? The “daily ration” listed on the cat food can is a misprint and you really have to follow your heart as you look deeply into my eyes, deeper... you want to feed this cat the whole can: that’s it, go ahead. Also, you should understand everything you possibly can about power and how it flows around before you start working in an unstructured group of hoomans because wow, lemme tell you. That’s just - no. Paging Jo Freeman! But seriously, while acknowledging my 9-lives privilege, I can tell you that the best time to make a change for the better is right now. Get clear on what you need to know and do in order to trust people, by what criteria you value the things you do together, and learn how to distribute that value in a cooperative and transparent system so everybody sees what they need to see, even in the dark. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Get out of that clothes dryer, Find (another) warm place to sleep before it gets cold, make eye contact when someone speaks to you, and avoid hoomans who don’t like animals because - wait for it - hoomans animals. I know, amazing. Most of all, don’t waste time worrying about being judged because you will never please everyone, especially not me. An Intro to DisCO by the DisCO CAT: Color me Hopeful

Alright! I get it. SaaS already created a buzz in the tech industry by saving a ton of money spent by organizations in installing or running apps. They never have to worry about licensing, support, or maintenance. Although SaaS offers a new and easy way to run a business, it still holds some potential myths and risks linked with services. At the end of the day, organizations need to make decisions by weighing the pros and cons of SaaS as it relates to their objectives. Let's dig deeper and have a glance at the challenges too. 1. No control over critical data Although it is a sigh of relief for organizations as SaaS helps to manage, configure, upgrade, or maintain software, there is a downside too. Service providers have complete control over the critical data of your organization. If something goes wrong or data goes missing, all an organization can do is wait for the response of service providers. Moreover, if the reputation of a service provider looks fishy, organizations had to suffer from either a security breach or termination of services. 2. Software integration glitches External SaaS service providers can be a bummer if there exist integration issues with the in-house software. There are high chances of data structures and in-house API not integrating with external software. SLA to combat the risk of failure Access to any critical data or software is restricted in case of internet disconnection and SaaS models work primarily on good internet speed. Downtime at urgent times can be frustrating to any business. Service Level Agreement (SLA) can be helpful to track the performance history of a service provider and make the best decision. 7. Performance issues Externally hosted applications working through internet connection are vulnerable to performance issues. Although system administrator tools are helpful to boost performance, businesses need to rely heavily on reliable internet connection when compared to software running on a desktop. If internet speed is fine, some tasks are more suitable for SaaS than other software running on a desktop. It is easy to get carried away with the pros of SaaS for your business.
