No one should be shocked to see ads for items they previously searched for, or to be asked if their data can be shared with an unknown number of “partners.” But what is the scale of this surveillance? Judging from data collected by Facebook and by non-profit consumer watchdog Consumer Reports, it’s massive, and examining the data may leave you with more questions than answers. newly described in a unique study Using a panel of 709 volunteers who shared archives of their Facebook data, Consumer Reports found that a total of 186,892 companies sent data about them to the social network. On average, each participant in the study had their data sent to Facebook by 2,230 companies. That number varied significantly, with some panelists’ data listing over 7,000 companies providing their data. The Markup helped Consumer Reports recruit participants for the study. Participants downloaded an archive of the last three years of their data from their Facebook settings, then provided it to Consumer Reports. Crypto Payments Goes Mainstream: Catching the Wave

We focus on trivia at the expense of more important issues. Why does this happen and what we can do about it? I once sat in a meeting and watched four of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with argue fiercely about a comma on slide 4. Said comma, my teammate declared, would imply a pause that would make our sentence clearer. But, another teammate swiftly countered, that a pause could just as easily sap the sentence of its momentum, thereby diminishing its potential to deliver the maximal effect to the reader. Around and around we went: for 10 minutes, then 15, then 20, until the meeting was nearly over and I realized this the meeting. was I remember being confused. The kind of confused where you attempt, with quiet desperation, to make eye contact with someone else in the room to confirm that yes, this is happening and no, you are not losing your grip on reality. I was newer to the team, but I couldn’t see how our comma placement would matter much. Maybe our stakeholders were really into grammar? This meeting has stayed with me, and ever since I’ve wondered why teams and organizations spend so much time and energy on trivial problems. The answer has to do with something called bike-shedding. Bike-shedding, or Parkinson’s Law of Triviality Imagine a board of directors meeting with the following agenda: A request to approve $30 million for a nuclear power plant A request to approve $250 for a bike shed The board is made up of average people, and they don’t know a lot about nuclear energy. Mike, the chairman, kicks off the meeting. “Ok, so first up: nuclear power. Anyone have any thoughts on this one?” Silence. Someone muffles a cough, and others busy themselves with their phones as if something very important has just come up. Finally, Susan peeps up. “$30 million sounds about right to me…” “That sounds good,” says Mike, relieved. “Unless anyone has any other thoughts, we’ll move on to the bike shed.” There is a sudden rustle of excitement. Everyone is eager to talk about the bike shed because, in contrast to nuclear reactors, everyone knows enough to have an opinion about the bike shed. The discussion turns out to be both spirited and lengthy because people have to say. Now moving on: let’s talk about this shed…” When a topic is simple and easy to grasp, like a bike shed, we’ll tend to have an opinion on it and thus more to say about it. Even if we don’t, we’ll still say something so that: We don’t look stupid in front of our peers. After all, what kind of dope wouldn’t have anything to contribute to a conversation about a bike shed? It like we’re contributing. It’s an easy way to say “Look at me! I’m driving decision-making!” Alas, these same people always seem to go missing when the stakes are higher. looks The nuclear power plant vs. bike shed example is illustrative. It’s an extreme scenario unlikely to actually happen (hopefully), but maybe you can still relate. There is good news if your team or organization frequently descends into mind-numbing debates about trivial topics: you have options. What to do about it? I’ve experienced my fair share of bike-shedding over the years, and I’ve come up with a few ideas on how to respond that I hope will help you stay sane and productive. 1: Prevent bike-shedding with a clear purpose and objective Ensure that your meetings have a clearly defined purpose or desired outcome. This can be difficult, especially in a fast-paced work environment where it doesn’t feel like there is time to plan, but it’s worth it. A clear purpose is like an anchor that will keep the ship from drifting away into the abyss. Use it to refocus the group when the conversation strays into irrelevancy. 2: Fewer cooks in the kitchen generally leads to a better meal Big meetings tend to be huge wastes of time. Inevitably, everyone will want to contribute something, and unless everyone in the room has a well-informed opinion (the odds of this being the case are low in my experience), you will be at a high risk of bike-shedding. Be ruthless about limiting the size of the meeting. If folks in your organization are sensitive about having “visibility” into what was discussed, offer to share a readout or even a recording of the meeting. If a big meeting is unavoidable, do your best to share both the purpose and relevant information ahead of time to increase the chances that participants will have something of value to say. 3: Delegate trivial matters Just because the bike shed gets more time than it deserves doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be discussed at all. Try and identify trivial matters ahead of time and delegate them to individuals or smaller groups that are empowered to make decisions without the full group’s approval. 4: Be aware and pick your battles If you do find yourself in meetings about bike sheds (or commas) while more important issues go undiscussed, my advice would be not to engage more than you have to. Let others expend effort arguing about things that don’t matter. Protect your energy and mental health by resisting the temptation to participate just because everyone else is. Save your voice for moments when you can contribute meaningfully, or, as Teddy Roosevelt said: “speak softly and carry a big stick.” Also published here.

The prime reason behind seeking horizontal scalability was to be able to encrypt everything quickly so that the connection could easily be revived if ever anything went wrong. Building on top of a cloud-native infrastructure backed by Kubernetes-Docker-CoreOS Container Linux stack offered the following advantages to the end-users: Kubernetes is an open-source technology and it’s really portable. Different workloads can be distributed across a hybrid cloud or multi-cloud environment. With Kubernetes, one can always deploy a hybrid cloud on AWS or can even bring it to their homegrown data center. The stack also provided massive security benefits for those who had one distro/machine image to validate. Such a stack allows the end-users to save a lot of money and time. The concept of connected homes was more affordable and reliable for the new users with this technological stack. With the right infrastructure Wink was able to able to design and produce more smart home products in a prolific way and gained huge popularity in the Home Depot stores & Walmart, the top-notch American stores at that time. Amazingly, the Wink team deployed the cloud-native infrastructure backed by Kubernetes at the top of CoreOS Container Linux, early in the life of the infrastructure deployment and this helped them overcome the challenge of serving all the communications between hub and products while maximizing the reliability and latency at the same time, right with their first project. Adopting CoreOS/Kubernetes simultaneously ensured that the Wink team had the much-needed portability in their technological stack which in turn permitted the scope of a lot of plug-ins and integrations. Low-latency internet connectivity still remains an area of concern for the team as the ecosystem of smart-home products is continuously growing, and with this, there arises an ever-increasing need for cloud-enabled integrations. In 2015, Docker was not prolific in use despite being understood so the Wink team had to start looking out for the potential alternative solutions that existed. Another limiting factor was the deployment of multi-port non-HTTP/HTTPS services, which was a bit of a daunting task for early cluster technologies because they didn't support port mapping and exposing with ease. The initial project of Wink therefore despite being very ambitious was too inclined towards HTTP workloads and could only be used on some miscellaneous stuff for a while and could never be in actuality deployed in the production environment. As simple as it was to decide about a containerized workload, taking decisions about OS and container orchestration platform wasn’t an easy task at all. They also were a bit worried about having a proper housekeeping infrastructure in place for their ambitious technological stack, for example having a backup plan to restart a container if it accidentally dies with the help of a load balancer. Later with the load balancing and auto-healing capabilities of Kubernetes, these problems found a resolution. Initially, the Wink team was using Fleet as a basic container orchestration enabler which didn't facilitate routing, sharing configurations, secrets, et cetera, among instances of service. For these additional layers of functionalities to be added one had to write unit files manually which was a bit of a tedious task for the team. So, the team acceded to automating some of these additional facilitations which became possible with the Kubernetes-Docker-CoreOS Container Linux stack Why Did the Wink Team Choose CoreOS Container Linux? Wink team settled for CoreOS Container Linux because of the container-optimized Linux distribution system that is facilitated. Initially, they were considering building directly on a general-purpose Linux distro like Ubuntu but later they realized that this wouldn't work as they will have to go through multiple additional installations. Additionally, they would also have to avail of a cluster management system like Mesos that could handle larger teams and workloads. Furthermore, CoreOS Container Linux came with a built-in container orchestration system called Fleet and came with an easy-to-use API. Fleet was sufficient for the time being until the team opted Kubernetes for to address some of the heavier workloads. Klein illustrated that they could trust Kubernetes as it is an open-source community maintained by CNCF which in turn is supported by many experienced people who possess considerable experience in cluster management. It’s 2022 and are looking back to December 2021 to analyze the Christmas shopping trends. People were optimistic during this season, despite the latest Omicron variant growing, and the continued supply chain disruption and inventory issues. According to NRF, on gifts, holiday items, and other non-gift products in 2021. NRF also estimated an increase of between 11%-15% to a total of between in online purchases in 2021. consumers planned to spend $997 $218-$226 billion Some experts suggested getting the holiday shopping done earlier than usual to avoid delays or missing out on products. 49% of people surveyed had planned to start shopping by November this year which is 7% more than in 2020. Experts at GrowByData analyzed the ads data for the Christmas shopping season using Ad Intelligence to look at what the trends were for ads, advertised, sales/discounts, and local inventory ads. The Trend of Ads and Advertisers Looking at the graphs below, we see that retailers had been advertising for the holidays since early November and they were continuing to increase ads as we got closer to Super Saturday and Christmas day. The Trend of SALEs and PRICE DROP Next, we analyzed the usage and trend of tags like SALE and . The use of these tags increased in early November peaking during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It  stayed steady and our forecast estimated that the trend would start going upward again, as shown on the graph below. PRICE DROP annotations The Trend of Local Inventory Ads In terms of local inventory ads, ‘Pick-up today’ was far and away the most popular one followed by ‘In store’. Looking at the trend graph, the pick-up today annotation was consistently used throughout the last month except for on Thanksgiving Day. The reason for this could be that many physical stores decided to close for Thanksgiving this year. Top Advertisers Next, we wanted to see who the top advertisers were for the Christmas shopping season on Google Shopping. Amazon.com was the top advertiser on the platform followed by big-box stores like Walmart and Target. Furniture giant Wayfair and home improvement conglomerate Home Depot round out the top 5 advertisers for the holiday season so far. Products, Advertisers, and Discounts by Shopper’s Journey And finally, we dove into the competition of ads and advertisers based on the shopper’s journey. In terms of advertisers, the highest competition is on the awareness phase keywords as 38% of the total advertisers competed for ads in this stage. Looking at the products competition, the highest competition is for ads from the decision stage keywords. And with regards to discounts, we found keywords in the decision stage of the shopper’s journey had the most discounts as shown on the graph below. In Conclusion For 2022’s holiday season, will consumers decide to shop more in stores as we get closer to Christmas or will online shopping remain the first choice for many? One thing shoppers should avoid this year is last-minute shopping as manufacturing and shipments are currently slow at the moment.
