Whether you want to learn more about Holochain or you’re an experienced Holochain developer ready to launch your next great idea, we would love to see you at our next Hackathon. The possibilities for what hApps can be created are truly endless and we’re so excited to see what you will build next. Join us for an agent-centric, self-organized experience and hands-on learning about Holochain! How does it work? Our Hackathons are 2.5 days of collaboration with teams of people building projects and infrastructure for the Next Net. Whether you come with an idea, project or team — it doesn’t matter. Everyone has the opportunity to learn by doing at our events. For folks that aren’t sure they can/want to attend the whole weekend, we welcome folks to come on the first night for our introduction to Holochain and project-brainstorm breakout sessions to see if they’re interested. Who can come? We want the Next Net to be built by a community representative of global diversity. We welcome all who participate constructively in our community, including but not limited to people of varied age, culture, ethnicity, gender, gender-identity, language, race, sexual orientation, geographical location and religious views. Holochain is a git (free and open source distributed version control system) that does not require Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS). When I was introduced to Holochain I was skeptical but in the months since doing more research, talking to the community, and building some basic apps on it I have come to realize it as one of the best designed software systems I have seen in a long time. This is a compilation of my notes as I research Holochain so it is more like my initial thoughts and observations rather than a technical deep dive. I will be covering its values, core components, and similar technologies. Holochain Introduction The , the organization behind Holochain, was started years ago by . Its purpose was very different than what Satoshi Nakamoto had in mind with Bitcoin as an anonymous digital cash system with a predefined economic model. Collaboration > Competition HBR Core Components Source Chains Every user of a Holochain application keeps a record of their own actions and entries by writing to their own local datastore (a.k.a blockchain). One chain per application stored directly on your device. There is intrinsic data integrity through these chained hashes similar to how Git keeps track of its many branches and forks. You can easily manage permissioned access to allow data to be globally public in the Holochain distributed hash table stored on other devices on the network, restricted to a subset of Holochain users, or completely secure and private even blocking access by other source chains of the same user. How do I know your data is reliable if it’s only stored on your device and never validated by miners? That’s where the constraints and rules come in again, instead of a single global consensus mechanism each app specifies how data must be processed for it to be useable. When any app commits to its own source chain it must comply with these rules, any time you and I are exchanging information both of our devices check the incoming data to verify that we both followed the same rules. Distributed Hash Table Distributed hash tables ( ) are distributed systems for storing and accessing files or arbitrary pieces of data. When data is put into a source chain its entry address is just a SHA-256 hash which is used to do a DHT lookup. All the nodes in the network are responsible for maintaining the hash table. Examples of DHTs include and . Every single Holochain app or happ bootstraps its own Holochain network so each app has its on DHT. DHT IPFS BitTorrent In Holochain networks, there are validation rules that new entries to the DHT have to comply with in order to get accepted and to propagate to other nodes. This means that as a participant in an application that uses Holochain you are only able to write to a shared space if the way you do that is according to the “terms of service” you agreed to in the beginning. In order to guarantee data availability and low participation barriers, every user (or node) carries a small part of the total data available. With a large pool of users the amount needed to be stored is gets smaller and yet there is still more resiliency and availability of the data. Apps Where blockchain dapps are merely decentralized, Holochain hpps are fully distributed because everything is peer-to-peer. When you download an app nowadays in the App Store you are forced to sign Terms & Agreements presented by the app. All or nothing, you have no say. To enable more complex interactions you have to enable people to enter into relationships how they feel is best, and sometimes this means different agreements for each side. My app might want to access your identity to add your profile on a post but you don’t want your identity associated with this app. Basically you can define how publicly your data is and as an app you can define how public your member’s data is . It has to be a co-created agreement by you, the app, and all other parties involved. Similar Technologies Holochain is not the first of its kind. The Revolution Will Be Distributed A little over a year ago, I found myself at a hackathon in a 3-story hacker-house across the street from Ocean Beach in San Francisco. There I discovered the technical solution that has the potential to free us all from the confines of today’s monolithic and centralized platforms and services. In each room of the house different groups of software engineers, visionaries, and technologists were hacking away at creating a next generation holographic data storage architecture, and an ecosystem of decentralized applications to prove the concept. Their mission was to create an agent centric peer-to-peer scalable post-blockchain platform to enable decentralized application developers to solve problems such as value creation, privacy, peer-to-peer connectivity, and decentralization. Fast forward to 2018 and now has an active community of developers from around the world, and just launched an . Holochain initial community offering last week So WTF is Holochain? Existing distributed ledger technologies powered by blockchain, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, suffer from scalability issues and also consume massive amounts of energy. Holochain is an energy efficient post-blockchain ledger system and decentralized application platform that uses peer-to-peer networking for processing agent centric agreement and consensus systems between users. The key advantage of Holochain is that every device on the network gets its own secure ledger, or Holochain, and can function independently while also interacting with all the other devices on the network for a truly decentralized edge computing solution. Holochain will enable developers to build decentralized applications for governance, collaboration, organizational tools, social networks, social media, vendor relationship management, platform cooperatives, sharing economy apps, supply chain solutions, community resource management, as well as tokenless mutual-credit cryptocurrencies and reputation systems. Traditional computer systems are designed around a stack like architecture of layering system upon system on top of each other to create monolithic systems similar to skyscrapers. This model for data storage and transfer is as old as computing itself, and is severely outdated for the modern world. By creating an agent centric computing architecture that can scale vertically and horizontally across a network, Holochain introduces a new model for data storage and transfer that can enable any edge device. Facebook and Cambridge Analytica The benefits of using Holochain are multifold. By leveraging Holochain developers will be able to build a new generation of decentralized applications and services that do not abuse users privacy, or destroy the environment. Holochain puts control of users data back into the hands of users instead of mega-corporations. Proof of Service Another fascinating component of Holochain is its capacity for supporting a wide variety of consensus or agreement systems between users. For example, Holochain can enable what is called a “Proof of Service” consensus system, where a user gets rewarded when a service is completed for another user then gets compensated in cryptocurrency. This is the model that “Holo Fuel” is based on, which is the cryptocurrency attached to the Holochain initial community offering. However, Holo Fuel is not your typical cryptocurrency, the idea behind it is the amount of fuel is attached to the volume of community engagement. In other words, the amount of Holo fuel is associated to the services provided by developers, data hosters, and users. It isn’t a coin, or a traditional currency, it is a system of agreement between users not associated with a monetary value, but rather a proof of service value. It is a post-monetary system of community engagement, not a system of gambling or profit. I know this probably sounds complicated, but it really isn’t. It is basically just digital bartering. If I do something for you, you do something for me of equal exchange or value. In the initial use cases, it will mostly be hosting or data transfer, but eventually could expand to a wide range of other use cases once more developers start building their own decentralized applications using Holochain. Those developers will also have the capability to develop their own unique agreement systems or smart contracts based on whatever consensus model they desire. Blockchain Is The Past While the mainstream media might have convinced you that Bitcoin and the blockchain are the future, they are wrong. Blockchain is the past, it is a 9–10 year old technology, and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are based on mimicking our existing corrupt finance system. Bitcoin is a system of gambling and storing value, not a system of value creation or community engagement. Holochain enables humanity and our devices to participate in a post-monetary society that values merit, contribution, community, and service to others. It is a system designed for both data integrity and personal integrity. The future of technology should not be about connecting us to billion dollar mega-corporations, and forcing us to rely on systems like Facebook that steal and monetize our data. The future of technology should be about allowing us to connect with others in a manner in which we agree to be connected, and not be subject to unnecessary and corrupt middlemen. Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) has rapidly transformed the way we think about data management and trust in the digital age. At its core, DLT refers to a decentralized database system spread across multiple networked computers. While , the technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, initially popularized DLT, it's essential to recognize that the ledger landscape has since evolved considerably. blockchain Among these alternatives are Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs), such as , which provides more decentralization. Blockchain remains a key player, but DLT has diversified, offering various structures and applications tailored to specific needs. Obyte On the other hand, besides the structure, DLTs could be classified as permissioned (private) and permissionless (public). As the names suggest, they could be used privately by a certain company, organization, or even individual, or publicly and free by everyone. In our case, we’re gonna dive a bit more into the available DLT structures and their main features. Blockchain Of course, this one is the most well-known type of distributed ledger. It consists of a chain of digital blocks, where each block contains a list of transactions. These blocks are linked together using cryptographic hashes (unique IDs). In cryptocurrencies, blocks containing transactions are created by users who decide to do so. They’re known as miners or validators. Anyone with the right equipment or sufficient capital could be one of those users; however, in practice, block production is often dominated by a small (2-5) number of users. All participant nodes must reach a consensus —agree about the state of the network and its valid transactions. For this, blockchains use various mechanisms. The most used of them are Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS). The first one requires a lot of energy to solve complex cryptography, so it's not considered . The second one eliminates the energy part but replaces it by giving block production power to the richer nodes, which may cause unfair centralization. very eco-friendly Bitcoin (BTC), Dogecoin (DOGE), and Monero (XMR) are PoW blockchains. Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH), BNB Chain (BNB), and Cardano (ADA) are PoS blockchains, just to name a few examples. Distributed Hash Table (DHT) A Distributed Hash Table (DHT) is a decentralized and distributed data structure used in computer networks to efficiently store and retrieve information. Think of it as a massive, virtual storage system that's spread across many connected computers. Each computer holds a part of this data table, and the DHT helps locate where specific pieces of information are stored. Unlike blockchains, DHTs store key-value pairs, much like a distributed dictionary. It’s optimized for efficient data retrieval based on keys. Currently, the main example of this system applied in a crypto ecosystem is the platform Holochain and its native coin, Holo (HOT). They describe the system :\ like this “Rather than thinking of Holochain like blockchain, it may be better to think of it like git repositories for each agent [node] which can be published, shared, synchronized, or merged via a BitTorrent-like DHT (Distributed Hash Table). The provenance of all shared data is strictly enforced and the structure, content, and its compliance with shared application rules are validated by randomized peers.” DHT has been primarily used for distributed data storage and retrieval, though. It still could have unknown exploits in this format. Tempo + Cerberus Tempo is described as a distributed ledger and consensus protocol at the same time. It introduced the concept of a shared ledger with lazy consensus, aiming to reduce communication complexity and achieve scalability. Lazy consensus is an approach where nodes don’t engage immediately. Instead, they accept and process transactions independently, coming to a consensus only when a dispute or conflict arises. Tempo faced limitations related to finality and fault tolerance, which became apparent during testing. To address these issues and further enhance the scalability and performance of their DLT, the crypto ecosystem "Cerberus" in 2020. This is a multi-shard consensus protocol that incorporates elements from Tempo and HotStuff, a consensus protocol that changes leaders with every request to optimize performance. Radix introduced Cerberus leverages massive presharding, allowing for virtually unlimited parallelism in transaction processing. It also introduces a novel "braiding" mechanism to enable atomic transactions across shards. This complexity may make it more challenging for developers to understand and implement, potentially increasing the risk of . bugs or vulnerabilities Directed Acyclic Graph A Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) is a unique data structure and consensus mechanism used in certain cryptocurrencies. Unlike blockchains that arrange transactions in linear blocks, DAGs organize transactions into a graph-like structure without loops, meaning it's acyclic. In a , each transaction serves as a node within the graph. , thus checking prior network activities and making sure they are correctly recorded. This validation process is crucial for transaction security and consensus. DAG-based systems eliminate the need for mining altogether. Instead, users actively participate in securing the network every time they create new transactions. DAG-based system Before a user initiates a transaction, they validate all prior transactions since the network was started They can be faster, cheaper, and more decentralized, but not all DAGs are the same. Each of them has different systems, especially when it comes to consensus. Some of them could be faster than others; some others could have fewer intermediaries. It depends on the specific project since the “DAG” is merely a structure. Popular implementations of this system include platforms like IOTA (MIOTA), Nano (XNO), Obyte (GBYTE), and Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR). The last one isn’t described properly as a “DAG” but uses DAGs inside its own unique . Hashgraph DLT system Obyte as a DAG Every cryptocurrency platform works in its own way, and it’s not different in Obyte. While other DAGs may increase centralization with their consensus mechanisms, Obyte is committed to the idea of a true ledger without middlemen. . Instead, along with an already partially ordered DAG, Obyte has to establish an unambiguous order of transactions and avoid double-spending. In this platform, there aren’t powerful parties (such as miners, privileged users, or companies) to control the network Order Providers (OPs) OPs are typically well-respected individuals or companies that create transactions like everyone else, only that these transactions serve as waypoints for ordering all other transactions. In other words, their transactions are like guides or small headlights for the rest of operations to follow a single path. In return, they get a portion of the transaction fees, but that shouldn’t be the main purpose of an Order Provider. They should be respectable members of the community with great interest in its well-being. And they can’t do a lot of things that miners and validators can — they simply don’t have that power. If we imagine a scenario where they misbehave and collude, they can’t do much. They can’t censor transactions, double-spend, or steal funds. The only thing they can do is stop the network until a new network with a new set of Order Providers is restarted from the point where the old network stopped. That’s not very useful for them. Besides, all the OPs are selected by community voting through . their wallets It prioritizes a true ledger without middlemen, ensuring that powerful parties cannot control the network and maintaining security and practicality at the same time. I also play the violin as a ministry, sing as a ministry and in choirs in 4-part harmony (bass), play badminton as a hobby, and go to the gym to keep the dopamine at racing levels. I’m very passionate about learning as much AI as I can. I now work with Python to build Transformer models for general-purpose applications (MetaGPT). I also have to learn Julia  because that is the future of AI. I also realize that I need to learn Rust because functional programming languages are the future of software development.  (I already know Golang and Dart). I build AI-enabled Mobile applications and high-performance blockchain models (HoloChain and Hedera Hashgraph). Right now I seem to be extracting almost a concoiusly sentient personality from my LLMs. It’s actually scary if you look at it that way. 6. What’s your favorite thing about the internet? The convergence of the entire world on a global scale. Sitting in my room or coffee house or gym, I can access any part of the world - USA, UK, China, Russia, India, Japan, Canada, Italy - and tap into their information. I’m a programming and information addict, which is the coolest part of the Internet. The world is at your fingertips. Once you know APIs and REST, the entire Internet is at your disposal. This ability to almost be omnipresent on the Internet is completely underrated. The entire world is now dependent on a functioning World Wide Web. It’s scary that we have even a single system point of failure. If the Internet goes down permanently, so does the rest of the world. That would be a starting point for your next question. 7. It’s an apocalypse of ‘walking dead’ proportions and you can only own a singular piece of technology, what would it be? 3D-printed food synthesizers and water purifiers. People need to eat and drink! I would invest 2 million USD in apartments and rent them out at market rates employing sufficient workers to maintain them (Rich Dad, Poor Dad). I would buy 100,000 USD worth of the 20 lowest price cryptocurrencies available. I would get a computer that actually can run my programs. I mean, really freak out. 256 GB DDR RAM, 256 GB Optane RAM, 128 GB Graphics Card x 4 cluster, 128 TB HDD, several ultra-large monitors for coding purposes, ergonomic input devices and chair, and an ultra-large living space for myself (maybe a new house) where I can exercise and play sports and even swim. That would be cool. The remaining 5 million USD would go to religious orders like the Missionaries of Charity and the Foundation for Free CS Education For Street Children, a Foundation for Volunteering as a Break-Time from Work, a Foundation to Sponsor the Education of the Poor and Marginalized, and a Foundation to Learn English worldwide. 10. What’s something you’re currently learning or excited to learn? Organizing Julia into a large code base and following good programming architecture principles, and of course, Rust! On a serious spiritual note, we are learning the Deliverance Charism Ministry in the Unbound Program. Sexual sin plagued me for years before I discovered friends and fellowship from Jesus Youth, of both genders. Helping people by delivering them from the evil spirit’s influences would be fantastic. I know that’s weird for an intellectual but I stand by my experiences and my faith. 11. Would you rather travel 10 years into the past or 10 years into the future? Give reasons for your answer. Ten years into the future. The world has a beginning and an end. I want to live to see the end. Not a perverse thought but a statement I stand by as a dedicated Catholic charismatic Christian and a Jesus Youth. I somehow feel I have a mission at that time. And that my entire life has been a preparation for that. Also, signs and wonders and the need for faith to survive on the earth are highly motivating factors at the time of the apocalypse. I feel strongly that in 2023, we are not far away from an environmental tipping point of no return. Sorry to end with such a pessimistic outlook, but that’s my belief and that’s my answer.

I was pre-occupied by the absence of the Captain during our sitting of the day before, and hoping to see him to-day. As soon as I was dressed I went into the saloon. It was deserted. I plunged into the study of the shell treasures hidden behind the glasses. I revelled also in great herbals filled with the rarest marine plants, which, although dried up, retained their lovely colours. Amongst these precious hydrophytes I remarked some vorticellæ, pavonariæ, delicate ceramies with scarlet tints, some fan-shaped agari, and some natabuli like flat mushrooms, which at one time used to be classed as zoophytes; in short, a perfect series of algæ. We’ll get to these in a moment, but first: What is Capture? “In politics, regulatory capture … is a form of corruption of authority that occurs when a political entity, policymaker, or regulator is co-opted to serve the commercial, ideological, or political interests of a minor constituency, such as a particular geographic area, industry, profession, or ideological group.” –– Wikipedia, Regulatory capture More broadly, we can think of capture as a type of control or corruption where a small group gains inordinate power over others and their interests. Whether that is capture of a resource, a process, or the flow of communication, a powerful minority takes control of the benefits of something that should be held in common. Following we are going to look at a few different forms of capture on the internet and methods for avoiding it. Anticapture The framework proposed by Spencer Graham outlines governance practices for managing shared resources collectively without a fraction of that collective capturing control of the resources. For this he proposes DAOs as an ideally capture-resistant structure, but in doing so he redefines a DAO as: “a network of agents who share common purpose, and are the only ones who hold the power to execute actions that manage a set of shared resources.“ The core of Graham’s work is focused on the key stages of governance which he outlines as follows. Anticapture Graham outlines governance practices for managing shared resources collectively without a fraction of that collective capturing control of the resources. Anticapture describes four stages of decision making: delineate the options on the table Propose: select the preferred option Decide: put the selected option into action Execute: analyze the impact of the executed action Evaluate: Of these, Graham sees the greatest security risk in the Execute stage. If the ability to execute action is captured then the resource is also captured. Opaque mechanisms used in place of open markets: Berjon calls into question the institutions and infrastructures of the web, suggesting the need for explicitly capture-resistant designs. These can be brought about through technical shifts like new security standards as well as through regulatory practices like antitrust laws. Without offering one totalizing solution, these tools work together to create capture resistant ecosystems from the ground up. Holochain and Anticapture This brings us back to governance as users need to be able to govern their shared platforms, communities, and resources. Holochain and uncapturable carriers can help support the Anticapture framework in a number of ways. Because anyone can host the software and act directly peer-to-peer without a central server or ledger, the community gains a high level of autonomy. Beyond that, having clear, mutually shared rulesets helps to maintain security and ensure clarity through the varied governance stages. Holochain also follows almost the same process as laid out by Anticapture for changing the internal ruleset of a community, with the execute stage being managed by each agent for themselves autonomously from the rest. Finally, because every action within a Holochain app is signed, it is easy to trace any form of capture that does happen, no matter the stage of governance. This means communities can address any exploits that arise and continually become more capture-resistant.
