At Highlight, we face a unique challenge when it comes to adapting to a load of our customers. Because we record our customers' web apps, we need to be able to handle bursts of traffic as they come from their users. When we first started, our data ingested was simple: we would stream data from our recording client to our backend and perform updates as it came in. Our data handlers would perform metadata updates and write session recordings to PostgreSQL via SQL queries, and they would be consumed and removed from the database tables for permanent storage. The initial approach worked fine for a while. But as our customer base grew, we ran into key issues with this implementation. We had to run some database migrations that ran an ALTER command with an aggressive table lock. Immediately, we saw a wave of blocked commands, all waiting for the migration to complete. For the ~30 minutes that this took, we were dead in the water with incoming session requests and could not store any of our customers' recordings. All of the backend traffic would time out since we didn't have a place to put the data in the meantime. Maintaining all of our customers' recordings is always our top priority, so we knew we had to find a way to improve our ingest. Possible Solutions Since we needed a way to buffer data, we considered various techniques that could accomplish the task. One idea was to abstract each backend payload into a 'message' to be put into a buffer and consumed by a worker. We had a few considerations that were driven by details about our data: Our task data can range from ~10KB to ~100MB Tasks must be processed in order and serially for a given recording. Tasks across different recordings can be processed in parallel. We can't lose any messages for a recording as that would invalidate the entire recording. / / / Other NoSQL Databases Apache Cassandra MongoDB DynamoDB Has row size limits that vary but generally do not support our ~100MB messages. Would require much more application-level logic to write and consume data. Redis Data may expire, so messages may be lost. Message ordering is harder to maintain without performance constraints. RabbitMQ Fully ordered so scalability without application-level re-architecture may be a challenge. Brokers are replicated but do not scale well horizontally. Apache Kafka Messages can be as large as ~500MB. Messages are ordered within a partition. One consumer per partition allows for consistent ordering with linear parallel scaling. Messages only expire after a time-based or space-based retention policy. Building a Scalable Task Queue As we evaluated our options, we settled on a producer-consumer message strategy. Our architecture would have our backend HTTP request handlers produce 'task' messages that would block until the data was sent to our chosen broker. The messages would arrive at the broker quickly and reside until a worker machine could consume them and process their data. This effectively decouples our incoming data stream from the processing, allowing us to buffer data for as long as we want (space permitting based on the configuration of our broker). Focusing on the specifics of Apache Kafka, we had to define partitions that would store the sets of messages. As part of the process, we needed to think of a key that would ensure decide which messages fall into the same partition and are ordered relative to each other. Since one of our requirements is ensuring that tasks for a given recording are processed serially, we chose the session ID as the partition key. On both the producing and consuming ends, we could arbitrarily scale up the number of concurrent processes. Since messages of the same recording are processed in order, consumer scaling is limited. This is based on the number of partitions since, to maintain this property, each partition only has one consumer. For example, to be able to scale up to 128 consumers, we would need to have at least 128 partitions. Note that increasing the number of partitions increases overhead on the Kafka broker nodes and will require a more powerful machine (primarily more memory). For reference, we easily consume/produce ~5k messages per second (each ~100KB on average) across 768 partitions on a 3-node AWS kafka.m5.2xlarge cluster. Our 5 Key Learnings on Apache Kafka Managing our Apache Kafka cluster has been fairly straightforward, but we learned a lot of lessons along the way. To manage the cluster, we set server-side configuration via AWS MSK and monitor/edit topics via an ECS container running . Certain actions normally require the use of the running within the cluster's VPC, but we've found this UI to accomplish most of those tasks well. provectuslabs/kafka-ui Kafka CLI Message Ordering Producers must send messages with the Kafka SDK configuration of acks=all to guarantee message ordering. means that each producer will send the message to ALL brokers and wait for them to all receive the message before continuing. Messages are delivered to all replicas of a particular partition in the same sequence, ensuring that consumers of that partition observe the data in identical order. This setting Log Compaction As we learned the hard way, enabling log compaction for a message broker. Log compaction will replace old messages of a given key with future messages of the same key. This may be useful if messages represent a state which is updated by a superset state, but this approach will cause data loss if each message represents a unique piece of data. is a bad idea Replication Factor / Minimum In-Sync Replica One important feature of Apache Kafka is the ability to replicate data across multiple brokers to ensure high availability. Each partition can be replicated across N brokers to allow for reliable read/writes when a broker is down for maintenance or due to issues. For example, if you have a Kafka cluster with three nodes and a replication factor of three, then all brokers will have copies of all the data. You could lose a node without worrying about data loss and with minimal impact on read/write performance. The replication factor can be configured for the entire server or per data topic. You can find more information about how to configure that here. The setting dictates how many brokers must acknowledge a message before it is considered sent out. You may want to increase this setting to ensure that data is replicated and ordered correctly in the case of a broker outage. However, take care not to set the value to the total number of brokers since that would mean that writing will be blocked if even a single broker is offline for maintenance. min.insync.replicas Data Compression When thinking about how to best compress data, you have two options: compress on the producer/consumer nodes or have the Kafka brokers do it for you. We went with the first option of compressing before sending data and decompressing upon retrieval to ease the load on our cluster. Scaling up our producers/consumers proved to be more cost-effective than adding more CPU/brokers to the Kafka cluster. To accomplish this, we used the client library which provides an excellent abstraction for interacting with the cluster and will handle data compression completely transparently. segmentio/kafka-go Rebalance Timeout As we discussed, a consumer group distributed partitions to all processes so that each partition has exactly one consumer. To accomplish this, consumers send heartbeats to the broker to ensure they are still able to receive messages. When a consumer process stops, such as when rolling out an upgrade or if a worker ECS container crashes, Kafka must detect the missed heartbeat and assign the partition to a new consumer so that its messages do not back up. Two key settings dictate the configuration of rebalancing. By default, the setting governs the duration without consumer heartbeats that a broker considers the consumer dead and initiates a rebalance, and the setting sets the amount of time that the group coordinator will wait for new members to join. This means that once a consumer process stops, the amount of time until new data is consumed is the sum of the two settings. session.timeout.ms group.initial.rebalance.delay.ms We had to tweak these two settings from their default values to ensure that the rebalance time is reasonably short to quickly resume consuming messages while giving enough of a delay for new containers and processes to start up and connect to the cluster. The EigenLayer case highlights several important points and issues that we could observe that have been in the market for a long time and which all participants try to ignore. 1️⃣ The successful airdrop in late 2022 ushered in the "fat retrodrops" era and raised farmer expectations. People imitate activities in the networks, hoping to wake up one morning and see Lambo from the window. from described this point very well: Aptos @RyanSAdams Bankless 2️⃣ Many projects started betting on the token and using it as a marketing and reputation tool. I talked to the founders, convinced that only a drop would help them draw attention to the project. This is naive and short-sighted. Projects encourage activity by hinting at rewards for those who will boost the activity. This sends only one message to the average crypto user: ** Your active participation, in the end, can mean very little. 4️⃣ In the world beyond Web3, businesses compete with each other through better technology, more attractive design, clear communication, and other factors that affect market position. Traditional businesses offer cashback and discounts at the product's launch, but no one pays tens of thousands of people $1000+ for using shampoo or buying a car. 5️⃣ Blockchain projects desperately need users interested in technologies, not drops! This need highlights the significant issues with UX and product value communication. It must be a user-oriented approach with a consistent product and marketing vision. Some Web3 founders started to take this point, but not the majority. The desire to make more complex technological products to show them off in front of fellow technicians takes precedence over a rational approach and customer orientation. Conclusion Many people support this situation with airdrops because it brings (actually, not always) high income in a short-term perspective. Another issue is that high-tech projects are not ready to be more open to a broader audience; they only create technologies for developers, limiting the market's growth. I can't imagine the industry's organic growth if the blockchain/crypto projects start fighting over who will give away more crypto in fear that their activity on the network or the number of followers will fall due to inflated expectations. I urge all members of the Web3 industry pay more attention to the value of the project and build a long-term relationships between the product and the users. The hype passes quickly, and what remains in return, loyalty or disappointment, depends on the ability of the founders to play the long game. As much as " " remains a buzzword in 2023, so is the hype around the phrase "Women in Web3." Web3 This is problematic. Before I get a bunch of feminists leaving their disgruntled comments, let me explain. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry I have never been one to shy away from things I've wanted to do or experiences I've wanted to have. Not for any reason, and certainly not because of my gender. I try things and, like many people, fail, but remain persistent, as that is the only way to experience growth. When I entered the crypto space at the beginning of 2022, I was so intimidated by the tech and the jargon, that it didn't initially occur to me that I was stepping into a male-dominated industry, or that it would arise as an issue at any point. My first enlightening experience was at a conference in Croatia (BlockDown), when I was ready to start networking, only to be suddenly confronted with rooms packed full of men. Not a female face to be seen anywhere. My first troubling experience occurred months later when, at another conference, a man I was speaking to suggested that I only took my job because I had decided to live in my husband's city and therefore needed to find some kind of occupation. I corrected him immediately by saying that I had, in fact, developed and worked on my career and profession for over a decade, long before I even met my partner. While the gender gap remains real, even at more local meet-ups, where the female presence is shockingly low - I often refer to these events as "sausage fests" - I don't believe that emphasizing our gender does much in the way of helping our cause. That being that women play on an even playing field as men within the tech industry. The issue with highlighting our gender Every time I see events or groups using the term (or variation of) "women in web3" or "women in tech," it bothers me. I just don't see how giving women their own stage and singling out communities by their gender helps bring women closer to being considered for their abilities. What I would prefer to see is more women up on stages alongside C-Level men, talking about world-changing topics at the best conferences worldwide, without any mention anywhere that yes, it is indeed a female and shouldn't we be celebrating that? C-Level What I mean to say is that if we want more women to get into the tech industry and achieve everything that a man can, we should stop putting a focus on what sets us apart and start focusing on the skills, talent, and capabilities of females. Because yes, women CAN do anything and I only wish to see more women in crypto and tech at large. We don't need our own groups or events. We need to step up and show up, perform, and work hard to get to where we want. Agree or disagree - I am open to a conversation and dialogue on the matter, especially if it helps women REALLY get into tech more.

If you speak to anyone in marketing, branding, or communications within the space, they’re all likely to nod to at least one or more brands they’ve historically worked with that showed all the obvious signs of having an identity crisis. Web3 You see, this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. For any brand — from traditional firms to modern start-ups — having a kick-ass and tone of voice is pretty rare, but it’s the one thing that can change a product’s position from being simply useful, to immeasurably powerful. brand identity Now, this would be the cue for a Steve Jobs quote and a reference to ’s wildly successful branding — but we’re not going to do that, because I’m not actually here to talk about branding. Apple “Why the explicitly focused intro, then?” I hear you cry. And I’ll tell you. The thing is, while most traditional brands yearn to prosper with a strong and compelling brand, many in the Web3 space today are lagging behind their Web2 counterparts, and it’s having a really tough effect on the industry’s growth. Ledger’s fiasco last month was not down to a brand identity crisis, but, in order to understand what the issue was, this must be our starting point. Web3 Brands Haven’t a Clue Who They Are Disclaimer: Some do. Many don’t. One of the first rules of branding is to build the personified version of your product, , if you will. the soul of its being Web3 has seen immense growth over the past decade, with a lot of new projects hitting the scene, and many of them taking off to the moon. As an inherently technical industry, this immense and imminent growth resulted in a lot of projects launching to market with a predominantly technical team, focused simply on building a “good product.” This resulted in a lot of new products hitting the market with little thought as to how they look, feel, and connect with an audience. In the early days, though, this wasn’t really an issue — a tech-oriented team presenting products to a tech-oriented audience seemingly worked quite well, hence the number of unicorns — like Uniswap — that had a pretty poor user experience in their earlier successful versions. You see, the problem came later. As with any bull run, new adopters appear in the ecosystem, keen to try out the best applications available in the space. Great, right? Well, probably better if you’re ready for it. So as Web3 became more and more desirable to wider audiences who were a little less tech-focused and a little more used to their pocket-friendly Web2 apps, the industry seemingly hit a pretty big dilemma: Nobody could actually use their applications. As with any industry, of course what followed next was a to build the greatest Web3 app for mainstream adoption ahead of the next bull run, and that more or less brings us to where we are today. Darwinian battle But, brands don’t just have the issue of UX on their hands if they’re to meet the standards that wider audiences are used to — they need to up their branding game too. Much like the UX dilemma, when a lot of technically-oriented projects hit the market, it seems they may have skipped a session on branding, too. Touching back on our earlier point, a brand isn’t a way for projects to show off their grandiose ideas — it’s an emotive and powerful tool used to actually engage and create a connection with an audience. Having a lot of earlier projects built with a lower priority focus on this, what we’re faced with today is an overflowing ecosystem of really cool tech, but nobody to use it. A lot of projects today know exactly they’ve built, and exactly they’ve built it, yet, they have . what why absolutely no idea how they’re meant to sell it And that right there, is Web3’s brand identity crisis. The Industry’s Consumer Dilemma Picasso didn’t get his name by writing up the shade of paint and millimeter of the paintbrush he used for his work, so why do Web3 brands feel compelled to overshare the technicalities and underlying functions of their project over any emotive aspects? Well, actually, they’ve had pretty good reason to. You see, that heavy tech audience we keep circling back to pretty much made the industry what it is today, thanks to their loyalty and dedication to decentralization. Fundamental as their contributions were, their overwhelming presence in the evolution of the industry is the very thing that has placed it in a critical consumer dilemma as we move toward the next phase of growth. The early adopters of Web3 have been through it all, yet, they’re still with us today. They’re here because they truly believe in the opportunity the industry presents, and they believe in decentralization. So much so, for many old-timers in the space, the more decentralized a product is the better — no matter how much things like usability are compromised. This desire for more decentralization was a pretty huge factor as to why so many loyal Ledger users were left feeling unhappy with the project’s announcement of a new recovery feature that would enable users to regain their private keys last month. But it wasn’t just that. You see, even maximalists know that if we’re ever to go mainstream, we must improve adaptability across the board — and storing seed phrases and maintaining private keys is a far cry from consumer friendly. The thing that really kicked the can wasn’t building an “off-brand” feature only really fit for an entirely new market, it was their product positioning, consumer consciousness, and communication surrounding that feature. By pushing to market the way they did, they presented long-term, loyal users with these questions: What actually Ledger? is What do they care about? actually Who are they building for? actually In doing so, they uprooted many of the trusted foundations they had managed to set over the years, and established a colossal wedge between themselves and the users who helped them become the brand they are today. In addition, they barely seemed to touch the wider market that the product have been most appealing to. should Here’s the thing — Ledger is fighting the good fight. Now, they’re ramping up their efforts to help drive the next wave of adoption. But, in positioning this the way that they did, they failed to recognize their market and effectively engage their consumers. Why Ledger Shouldn’t Be The Scapegoat Though the attempted launch was considered a pretty big failure, Ledger’s faux pas was not entirely their fault. Yes, they should have thought about the product positioning. They should have thought about the emotive response their existing users would have, and they should have thought about how to properly market the product to the intended audience, but we’ll leave that one to them. The thing is, Ledger’s gross misdirection of messaging and lack of consumer consciousness boils back down to the same issue we’re seeing surface time and time again in the space. The industry is growing. More diverse consumers with wider-spanning needs are adopting our technology, and while this is fantastic — — too many brands have no idea how to grow with it while maintaining their existing position within the ecosystem. it’s exactly what we hoped would happen The goal is to enable a globally adoptable Web3.
