Tell that to big tech data harvesting corporations. I am not a brand. Targeted advertising campaigns are becoming increasingly invasive and intrusive. Targeted advertising is when online advertisers collect data on the attributes, traits, interests, and preferences of a consumer. Advertisers gather this information by tracking through data harvesting. As soon as I sign up for an account using my personal email, I am immediately bombarded with targeted ads from major brands. Or commercials on my linked smart device clearly from the same demographic with a small “sponsored” disclaimer in the corner.  Thus begins the origin story of my quest to revolutionize digital identity. Why? Privacy. Branding is a powerful tool. It is the digital representation of human value. Data harvesting corporations can exploit the fact that the average consumer doesn’t understand what digital identity truly is. Many people only know how to brand themselves online for commercial gain or social or cultural capital. Users can market their personal attributes online for popularity or retail. However, the personal characteristics, behaviors, and attributes that link your digital identifiers can follow you across platforms and into different spaces depending on how you manage them. You relinquish control of your data to these corporations by engaging in their platforms. These attributes are valuable to big corporations. Your identity equals dollar signs. What is digital identity? Digital identity is the collection of data that represents a person or entity in the online world. It basically represents “who you are” online. It is a digital representation of your brand, image, and identity. This includes your demographic and behavioral information such as personal identification numbers, social security numbers, emails, usernames, digital signatures, biometric data, login credentials, etc. Digital identity is used whenever you are required to authenticate your identity electronically, such as with government resources, online shopping, entertainment streaming, booking travel, searching online, engaging on social media, and banking. All your digital actions provide a footprint that creates your identity based on a combination of your personal characteristics, actions, and your participation in online communities or how you interact in digital marketplaces. Digital IDs must have the following characteristics: Must be personal and non-transferable. Each user has only one identity within each system User must give permission or be aware data is being captured Digital ID must be reusable User identity is verified and authenticated Digital ID data must comply with private, local, and government policies, standards, and regulations User data must be secure and available How is digital identity used? There has been an increasing shift in the use of digital IDs. A digital ID can be used as a virtual ID card, such as those currently adopted by state programs for passports or driver’s licenses. Digital ID cards are also rapidly gaining popularity in Web 3 spaces like the metaverse or in blockchain transactions. Other types of digital IDs are online banking IDs, e-shop IDs, and employee credentials used in (Human Resource Information Systems). HRIS Centralized digital identity systems and Data Harvesting Companies utilize data gleaned from your digital footprint to target their brands towards specific demographics, encompassing factors like images, age, gender, race, culture, or financial status. They craft marketing campaigns tailored to appeal to particular groups of buyers based on their products or services. Centralized Identity Systems like offer the convenience of signing up with your email across a multitude of websites, apps, or platforms. These credentials are federated, shared, and centralized. During the signup process, you often have the choice to opt out of data sharing or cookie usage. However, a closer look at the extensive Terms and Conditions on most sites reveals that this is primarily a compliance protocol to adhere to data regulations. This setup enables a single sign-on (SSO) experience across third-party vendor platforms, such as Zoom and Salesforce. Google Government sectors are now adopting centralized systems for managing digital identity. Different laws and regulations are being implemented to tackle the growing trend. According to Congress.gov, the Improving Digital Identity Act of 2023 “establishes a temporary task force to recommend secure methods and coordinate efforts for digital identity verification (a process for verifying the identity of an individual who accesses a service online or electronically”. This task force establishes a “government-wide effort for promoting digital identity credentials (e.g., electronic driver's licenses and birth certificates) for use in the public and private sectors”. Decentralized Digital Identity options for protecting privacy Blockchain technology can be used as a decentralized digital identity option. Decentralized Digital Identity presents an alternative solution to represent yourself digitally. You can also combine physical identity methods with digital identification methods for an added layer of security. For example, you can use only physical copies of centralized identify verifiers that are sensitive (ie. Birth certificate, passport, and driver's license). You can also choose to opt out of using centralized digital identifiers that share information. Airlines like Delta even offer the option to opt in or out of participating in digital ID programs. Keep private information private. Avoid sharing personal details about yourself online unless it is necessary. Nothing online is private so a good rule is to avoid putting any sensitive information about yourself online. This includes information about yourself that you enter into online forms or goods and services you use. There are many ways you can protect your digital identity from data harvesting, threat actors, and unwanted exposure. Some secure web principles to follow include: Always practice good digital etiquette and use common sense. Market yourself mindfully and systematically tailor your personal brand to avoid unwanted information being revealed Follow secure web practices and standards Keep browsers and operating systems up to date Only access secure and trusted websites with current SSL certificates Deny tracking and cookies in web browser settings or when prompted Avoid clicking unknown links or emails asking to enter digital credential Never enter digital credentials into unknown web pages or sign-up forums. You will never be asked to share your credentials with a stranger. To maintain control of their digital identity and footprint, users must be knowledgeable of the types of digital identities and how they are used in targeted branding. Users can understand what information about themselves is the most valuable and what should be private, safeguarded, and not shared online.

Digital Identity and Personal Branding in the Era of Data Harvesting

I am a Co-Founder of “CBD Company,” a licensed and certified medical marijuana grower. After much hard work in the field, I knew I needed one excellent website for our business. The best decision in my life was to make it from scratch. Advised by a friend, I met Javascript and started educating myself and gaining knowledge about programming. I suddenly felt lost when I dedicated years to my CBD 'idea' to help people worldwide with one of the best medicine out there given by nature. That happened because the more I invested money, energy, and time, the more the price of CBD dropped. The world is created that way, and we must adapt to it. Meanwhile, that made me more familiar with the programming world and primarily Javascript because I decided to chill out from the CBD industry for a little and give my energy to educating myself in another area. Managing hard working in the field every day and learning Javascript was not easy, but I must confess I loved it from the first day. One year ago, I couldn't install Node JS on Visual Studio Code for about literally 5 hours. After I had my first "console.log" after so much suffering for such an easy task, I knew it would be a long journey. The 'magic' happened after my first exam. Frankly, I have never been a good student for the simple reason I got distracted or bored too quickly. This time things were different. For the first time in my life, I had excellent results on an exam. Shocked by what happened, I gave all my energy and free time to programming. Month after month, I became more obsessed with becoming a developer. Around November, I finished the harvest and could dedicate every second of my day to practicing what I had learned till the moment and creating personal projects. Meanwhile, the only problem was that the programming world was vast, and I knew I needed to choose one exact path and stay strict in expanding my knowledge to the maximum. I started looking for something new, something too cool but impossible to happen. I am saying impossible because I wanted to create a unique long-term goal. Thank god I met the blockchain world. Tell me something cooler than Web 3.0. Shocking or not, for me, it was something new. Yes, I had cursory knowledge about crypto, bitcoin, and Ethereum. But the real meaning of Blockchain - PoS, PoC, L1, L2, etc - was completely unknown to me. I divided my day into two parts - one for working on personal projects and the other for gaining knowledge about the blockchain world. Exactly at this moment, I felt lucky! How can I predict that Javascript has a connection with Blockchain? This connection was 'Solidity,’ better said - smart contracts. With JavaScript, we can actually use and control these smart contracts, acting like a bridge between our familiar web environment and the blockchain universe. It was like everything happened for a reason. Inspired by that, I became crazy about it. Start participating in communities, achieving certifications, and interacting with each other was the most exciting part so far. I forgot to mention that I was already working as a React developer, which helped me expand my algorithms skills and dig into a large codebase. Month after month, grinding more than 14 hours almost every single day, I gave all of myself to become a better developer and learn more and more. After I did a lot of web3 projects practicing my developed skills from learning the EVM, Solidity, and DeFi combined with already gained skills from the 'MERN' stack, I was wondering: NOW WHAT? Web 3.0 is not from this world. It's another planet. On that planet, everything works differently. However, I'm grateful that Twitter exists, where I can absorb a lot of quality information about this different planet by following the right people. That way, they help me to make the right decision. I don't know precisely why I connect the word 'man' with 'security.’ Definitely, it has a reason. Exactly this reason helped me find myself and understand what I truly want from this field - to become a blockchain security expert. With months I can't explain to myself how all the information blockchain-related or programming at all may be out there, open-source and completely free. Show me a better world. Sadly like every beautiful creation of the world, it has next to it the opposite side - evil power/people who wanna destroy it. It's shocking how much funds are drained daily from such awesome Web 3.0-related projects, killing the hope in people that Web 3.0 will be forever. I said it already. That is the world we need to adapt it. For that, I will dedicate my life to the defense of Web 3.0. Do you even know how exciting it is to search for bugs inside a smart contract? My hands are shaking when I am writing this. This much exciting. Or probably I just found my drug. Try it it's from the healthy one. Let me retake a look at myself: It has been a year since I wrote my first 'console.log.' Nowadays, I am writing a blog, participating in audit contests, finding bugs, and even judging the findings of other wardens. Oh, I forgot again. I am also working as React developer. To understand how hard it was for me, consider that my English was in terrible shape initially. Normally, I don't like social media, mainly to express myself on it. The biggest reason I am sharing all this with you is to show everyone out there what is capable of one person only with one desire! Don't look down when things don't go well. Make the opposite and use these feelings and energy as inspiration in some other area. I recently found out people call it 'anti-vision.' From Harvesting to Programming: My Web3 Journey One Year After My First "console.log"

The Missionary is an operative, an end effector unit, for a BioMechaGenics product reclaim and recycle team. As such her basic function is to assist in the location and subsequent removal of designated BMG Enhanced units from service, BMG's premier product. The motivation for these removals and who makes those determinations is of less concern than the desire for efficacy and certainty in the accomplishment of that task. The complete and certain termination of the designated unit's operation is the end game goal. The Missionary was very good at her job, after all, she had been designed to purpose. Based on the bandwidth consumed and the number of concurrent connections being served it was apparent that the "come have safe enjoyable sex with me" adverts, especially those with the "your place or mine, anytime" and the "priced to please" taglines, were a bit more effective at driving traffic volume than were the simple "do you like sex" offerings. In any case they were all superior to that disastrous allusion to "guilt free sex" tagline. Virtually all of the soliciting participants in this enterprise have connections hosted by a server farm in a reinforced concrete block building with well hidden but quite efficient air conditioning located in Kinshasa Town, near the outskirts, down by the port but still intown from the open terrain of the port itself. There were no windows, and the place looked like it had suffered a pause in its construction, as though the building wasn't yet completed. It still had what appeared to be cranes and other equipment placed up high on the structure, as if construction might resume. The pale blue eagle and globe ComCore logo was displayed on the front of the building, impossible to miss. Evidence that the occupants, or at least the building's owners, had paid certain dues. It was run by a 48-year-old who claims to be Nigerian named Frederick. Frederick is self taught, a true autodidact genius, and he set up most of what he refers to as the chatbot before he brought on his crew of local lads. AI Now he had a stable of AI enhanced entertainment entities available for use in the consensual simulated sensorium, the simsens that were fed at one end by the server farm, and he had a capable well compensated staff that had allowed for expansion and improved service to the users. Frederick believed humans all had uncontrollable urges, base needs, needs that could somehow be monetized as they were served. Yes indeed, this was a profitable pastime. The blockhouse was beside the main drag into the port, Frederick liked the view from here, or so he said. Really it was power and connectivity along with other costs of doing business in relative safety that drove his choice of location. But right now he had a small curiosity about the girl, the new girl, about her choice of location. On the sidewalk right out in front of the blockhouse there she was, sitting on a box. No bags, no bottles, just the girl and the box. She had been there now for all of the day so far, apparently from well before Frederick woke, and she had been there from mid-afternoon through the late night the day previous. He wondered if she might be looking for business; she had that kind of a look about her. Frederick was after all a man of occasional needs, occasional desires which could be provoked. He was watching the girl and considering his options, he had a business to look out for which was of more import than any fool's notions of moral behavior. But for other reasons than morality sometimes entertaining the wayward might be not be a good option. Then, as he watched some burly fellow approached her where she sat, he came forth with who knows what commentary or proposition to the girl. As Frederick continued to watch, the girl got up and confronted the fellow, and whatever it was that she said him had caused a slight tip of his head in obvious deference and he quickly skedaddled off down the sidewalk. Frederick had observed this with some interest, perhaps with a bit more than simple idle curiosity, and he decided that this might not be an auspicious opportunity for an introduction. He elected for discretion and went back inside, there were things to be done. On the third day, midweek, Frederick had a hearty lunch brought in from Netty's Oeuvert, and the warmth and the full belly were lulling him like the siren sweetly singing. He went outside to stretch his legs, and maybe he'd have a puff or two. Strange. The girl was still there, or at least she had reappeared. There was a slight change in her hair, now it was pulled back, but she had a similar outfit, the jeans and turtleneck. He had a wonder how and why the Blues would leave her alone, but he saw that one pair of them passing by had pretty much ignored her presence perched there as she was on her sidewalk box. Frederick was deep in thought, sweet reverie. Here was a vision of real flesh, a looker at that, and this was at least entertaining if not outright provocational. There was something fascinating about the lass. Daydreaming was cheaper than any real action, and also safer. Frederick had long been jaded by the simsens, and he much preferred his own private reveries. He may have even closed his eyes for a moment, the better to focus on his thoughts when the activity surprised him, but now he was fully attent. It was the girl. She was shouting at someone. It didn't sound like a friendly greeting either. She was shouting at some passerby on the sidewalk. And she had notable volume for such a waif like girl. "Yo, Zwieback! Yeah you, fucking canhead!" The fellow had a vague familiarity but Frederick couldn't place where he had seen that face before. Probably some genomic replica of a once popular or notorious figure. BioMechaGenics had been fairly successful in genome harvesting from among the notables, the offer of some potential kind of arcane version of immortality was hard to refuse for many. But Frederick knew what canhead meant. It was a common derogatory term for robots and other mechanoids deemed inferior to the biologicals. Calling a human a canhead didn't mean so much, but referring to a synthetic as a canhead was a grave insult. The fellow remained pretty much expressionless, kind of blank, for a few moments. But now the girl was up, confrontational. Her arms folded before her. In your face but yet at a distance, shouting distance. Frederick surmised that the fellow was either a Zwieback or was named Zwieback, but that wasn't certain. Didn't really matter much either. She continued her invective at the fellow. "Seriously Zwieback, just what do you think you are doing? Making a statement for canheads everywhere? Or what, you got a stupid streak?" Zwieback had stopped walking and stood while people on the walk around him moved away. He had still made no response to the girl's taunts and was still relatively expressionless, unmoved. Obviously this was meant to be as it was, loud and public. Some sort of display. Even those who had initially moved away from the apparent confrontation now stopped to continue their witness from a distance. Now the girl had unfolded her arms and had her hands held together low before her. She had assumed a petulant gaze, a look as though she were a schoolmistress annoyed with a puerile miscreant, perhaps some misbehaving schoolboy who had lately been up to unacceptable sophomoric stunts. "You had to know this wouldn't go well for your creche mates didn't you little brother? You know what they say, right little brother? 'Everyone pays when someone strays'. Where were you planning to go, canhead?" Now the Zwieback assumed some emotion in his expression. It wasn't happiness. But still he maintained his silence. Frederick wondered if the fellow had anything he'd like to say. Frederick had some other wonders too. Why weren't there any Blues yet arrived to "Serve and Protect"? By appearances and the one sided dialog so far this was some sort of interrogation, or maybe even a trial, and the girl was the prosecutor. Some few in the relative crowd that was gathering had no trepidation towards taunting the Zwieback. Canhead seemed to be the taunt du jour. But what was the crime Frederick wondered? And what the Hell was that all about, "little brother"? "Yeah, for a Zwieback you are kind of at the low end of stupid aren't you canhead? I mean you really don't know what da fuck you are doing or where you are going do you?" Then she spat on the sidewalk, disdainfully. "So, you take a vow of silence or you just too stupid to have an answer? Ignorant canhead." By now the girl had raised her hands up above her chest as if to clench them together there, the traditional invitational stance of a fighter. There were still a few scattered catcalls from the audience, but still no Blues had appeared. The Zwieback was the very model of restrained anger, of unbridled hatred somehow held in check. It was evident that the girl had provoked him, and he appeared to be considering his present options. Still he had made no verbal reply, no answer or rebuttal, no denial or response. The girl paused and cast an almost beatific gaze, a look of sympathy almost, towards the Zwieback. Then she laughed into her hands help up below her chin, the laugh of one amused by the humor of circumstance. The laugh lasted but a moment and then it was gone. Now she turned away, perhaps as if to leave and simply abandon the scene she had helped create. In the instant that she turned away there was a sudden and uncomfortable pressure change that made Frederick's ears pop in the same moment that the Zwieback seemed to kind of twist in on itself and then fall in pieces as if had been disassembled piecemeal, as if it had been torn apart by some invisible force. Frederick's guess was focused infrasonics. The security mechadogs appeared as if on cue and began to check for who knows what risks. Biologicals, chemicals. It didn't seem to take them long to accomplish their examinations. In the few short minutes before a squad of Blues arrived to keep an eye on things, pacify any that needed pacifying as it were, the audience and the girl had all disappeared, vanished into the advancing evening. Only the disassembled Zwieback and the Blues remained on the sidewalk, and they kept a distance from the body parts. It was certainly not your usual day in the neighborhood, not even for Frederick's neighborhood. It was a bit later, on towards evening dark when the scavenger crews came to gather the remains and scour the area. They seemed to have more protective gear than your typical scavengers, maybe they and the Blues knew something that would advise caution. Frederick had been considering the sequence of events he had witnessed over the last several days, and more in particular what he had seen occur over the last few hours. He came to the conclusion that he had been the witness to an assassination. Perhaps the victim, the Zwieback, had been given a trial or examination by interrogation, but when he apparently failed that he had been taken out. In public, before an audience. And not just taken out messy street gang style, but taken out with tech that ordinary folks did not have access to. Certifiably a weapons superiority demonstration. Zero target survivability. Frederick was unhappy. There were always repercussions to these kinds of situations, these inexplicable events. He began to thinking about another inexplicable event that he had also witnessed though from a good bit further away. Fortunately. It was about seventeen, maybe even eighteen or nineteen years ago. It was late, well past evening but before the small hours of the night, when there was one Hell of a blast off in the distance, but not the comfortably far away distance. It shook things at the blockhouse and that was way too close. From the upper decks of the blockhouse he could see the pall of thick smoke already rising high into the night sky, and what appeared to be a pretty good sized fire at its base. He was trying to think of what was down that way when something that looked like a rocket launched upward through the smoke. Frederick had a "holy shit" moment, a realization that something was very wrong with this picture and ducked back inside the blockhouse. So it was that Frederick didn't get to see the initial airburst of the ignition detonation. And it was even luckier that he didn't get to directly see the hard flash when the radiation weapon went off. Even so he did see a slight flash inside his eyes in spite of being inside and behind the blockhouse walls. Many weren't so lucky. After the initial exchange or whatever it was, after the rad weapon blew, there was a circle of darkness where the electric power lines and most everthing else conductive had simply melted or evaporated. The rest was scorched ruin. Only the fire and the smoke remained in the dark circle. That was the night Slash had disappeared. Finally Frederick fell asleep and passed a fitful night. It was early the next morning when Frederick was awakened by someone banging rudely on his door. How had someone gotten in here, inside the blockhouse, to be banging on his door? Was there an emergency in the blockhouse? He flipped on the comm and saw to his utter amazement that it was the girl, the assassin right here outside his door. He was trying to decide what to do, whether to grab a weapon or pray, when the girl calmly said "Good morning Frederick. We need to talk." Then she placed her hand on her forehead and the door began to slide open. In shock and amazement, Frederick didn't know whether to shit or go blind. And she had the earring, an earring just like that Slash had worn. "Ah, come on in" he said with the best aplomb he could muster. And she did just that. ';

The Missionary: Harvesting Souls

An module is a low-cost device based on ESP32-S module, an image sensor and Micro SD slot. The module is not designed for low energy consumption; however, after some tweaks, the power consumption can be lowered to a level that is usable for short periods of time, powered by solar energy. The project presented here is a reasonably robust, dust-resistant and waterproof experimentation platform using commercial off-the-shelf components. Ideal for outdoor usage. ESP32-CAM OV2640 Key component: ESP 32 CAM Lowering power consumption ESP32-CAM wasn’t designed to be a low-power device. Without modifications, deep sleep current measured was 2.8 mA, it leaves much to be desired. Some already ventured in the following modifications: people on the internet Removed 5 V to 3 V voltage regulator, the camera will be powered directly from a 3.2 V LiFePO4 battery. Break trace that powers the camera from 3.3 V and wire to that switches on 2.8 V and 1.2 V voltage regulators. MOSFET Q2 Remove onboard led and wire GPIO33 to 5 V pin (this pin is already isolated after regulator removal) to use it externally. These modifications lowered deep sleep current to 0.8 mA, which is scandalous for a low-power device, however, is a substantial advance from the 2.8 mA without modifications. The proposed enclosure is pretty common, easy to find and inexpensive. Opens and closes without screws and has a mounting point where different mounting accessories can be installed. The printed circuit board was designed to place ESP32-CAM near the window where the camera lens was to be located. The module can be positioned in two different orientations to maximize area, depending on the selected components. To deal with this problem, two things are needed: a storage element, and the use of the ESP32 module in non-continuous (duty cycled) mode. The module in deep sleep mode draws about 0.88 mA at 3.3 V, which is equivalent to 0.003 W. Assuming 12 hours of daylight, it will take an average of 0.006 W average per day, just to keep the module energized up in sleep mode. If the pair panel/harvester can yield an average of 4.6% of the maximum power of the solar panel at full sun, it is enough to keep energized the ESP32 in deep sleep mode for a very long time (until battery degradation!). Assuming 100.000 Lux as a full sun and 100% of the 40x40 mm solar panel power as 0.13 W, it is estimated that the average irradiance required per day to keep the ESP32 energized in deep sleep is around 4600 Lux. How much energy is required to take a picture and upload it over the internet? After waking up from a deep sleep, it takes about 4 seconds for the ESP32 to take a picture, store it in the SD card, and bring it online. The average power consumption of these 4 seconds is 200 mA at 3.3 V. The current to be accumulated for 12 hours to is: ESP 32 Cycle: 200 mA x 4 S It is needed: ? mA x 12 H ? ma x 12 (3600) S ? ma x 43200 S (Approximating to 40000 to make calculations easier) factor = 4 S / 40000 S = 0.0001 200 mA * 0.0001 = 10 uA It is required an average of 10 uA for 12 hours to take a picture and send it to a server, which is perfectly feasible in the outdoors, even on cloudy days. In short, to take at least one photo a day and send it over Wi-Fi, it will take a daily average of 4600 Lux + 26 Lux = 4626 Lux. For two pictures a day it will take a daily average of 4652 Lux, and so on. If a smaller panel is used, such as the 30x25 mm in the front of the camera, whose power is about a quarter of that installed on the back, the irradiance should be 4 times stronger. To use the camera with such a small panel, a lot of light is required, especially direct light. Firmware and Software Permalink The firmware released here does the following things: take a picture and store in the Micro SD card, then send it over Wi-Fi to a server doing a multipart HTTP POST request and then, enters deep sleep for X amount of seconds before starting the cycle again. The code could serve as a starting point in the creation of a more robust application adapted to individual needs. On the server side, there is a small app written in Golang, which listens HTTP POST requests and receives the images sent by the ESP32-CAM and stores them in a local folder. This app should run on a PC, or a Raspberry Pi in the same LAN of the ESP32-CAM. Due to being a basic starter example, there is no authentication method developed, so it is not recommended for deploying in a public server in the internet. To program the module, a USB to TTL serial converter is needed, because the module hasn’t an onboard chip for that task. In addition, GPIO0 should be tied to GND during programming. GPIO33 was freed from the onboard LED and wired externally. The supplied firmware uses it for debugging, but it may be used for other purposes like: ADC for battery voltage measurement Set up as an RTC pin to wake up the MCU from deep sleep, i.e., PIR sensor Wire to a pushbutton to make local changes without a computer or Wi-Fi connectivity Results Image quality isn’t great, which was expected due to the cost of the module. Quality could be improved, modifying several parameters of the chip depending on the specific lighting conditions. Implement some form of authentication when communicating with the server. A mechanism to change the deep sleep time, image settings, etc. from the server on every picture exchange. Develop an RTC-based scheduler to take pictures on specific dates. Use of a better Wi-Fi antenna (external to the module, but placed inside the enclosure), and place it in a place with less obstructions. Certain changes are needed in the components near the U.FL connector.

Well, turns out, there is. A tax loophole that allows you to take hits in the form of losses and use it to minimize the burden on your tax filing through tax-loss harvesting. How Does Tax Loss Harvesting Work? It basically is a process to offset your taxes by taking some losses before the tax year ends. Since crypto is so volatile, you can take a relatively bigger loss and still manage to maintain the same portfolio. The only catch is, in some countries, you cannot buy back the asset you sold in the loss within 30 days. Let’s take a look at this example to understand TLH in a much clearer way. Nate bought 1 Ethereum at $4000 when the coin was at its top. 3 months later, the coin was trading at $2700. There are different benefits like the short-term and long term, different asset types and definitely, there’s the time value. For example, tax rates on short-term capital gains (within a year) are higher than tax rates on long-term gains. Because short-term gains are taxed at higher income tax rates compared to long-term investments, the taxes are higher. So the amount you’d pay in year one can be saved in year two as the capital gains would then fall under long-term investment. However, if you realize a capital loss within a year of investment and if the loss is higher than the capital gains, you can completely offset the gains with losses, and if you still have some losses left, you can use those to reduce up to $3000 in your taxable income. Things To Consider While Devising an Efficient Tax-Loss Harvesting Plan? No matter how enticing tax-loss harvesting appears, if not implemented well, it may end up causing you losses instead. While creating a strategy, keep these points in mind: a) You can take as many capital losses as you want to for tax deductions on your capital gains. But, you can only use up to $3000 of your losses against taxes on your regular income within a tax year. You can also benefit from time value as the taxes payable in the future would be lesser than the taxes you pay today. b) Transaction costs should be kept in mind as they are equally important as saving money through tax reductions. Retirement accounts are tax-deferred, hence, capital losses booked for the tax-loss harvesting purposes are useless. d) Taxes can be deferred until your retirement using a TRDA or Tax-Deferred Retirement Account. If you have a decent and diverse portfolio, you can make use of tax-loss harvesting to minimize the taxes. Since you’d be paying taxes on your gains once you get retired, you could deviate from a higher tax bracket to a lower tax bracket and end up paying less taxes than you’d have while working. You pick up your smart phone to pass time, but soon realize it’s not so smart without a internet connection. Which reminds you to check if there are any wifi connections around. And boom, there are many free wifi connections hosted from near by shops and airport itself. without thinking twice you connect to a wifi after filling unremarkable form it throws at you with your passport number, name, flight details etc. Or may be with your email or Facebook credentials. Congratulations!! you just gambled your identity for few mega bytes worth of internet. Open wifi connections were considered security nightmare from the beginning. But since there are no easy alternatives, open wifi connections still remain widely used in all most all public locations such as coffee shops, airports etc. Traditional open wifi hacking involves bit of manual work. Hacker needs to perform attack usually with . since websites nowadays are channel encrypted this involves more work such as “SSL striping” to get most out of it. This is doable, but not practical to do with this approach. MITM ARP Poisoning credential harvesting With development of IoT there are disturbingly easy ways for from public wifi’s. It soon got popular among IoT enthusiasts and related businesses. esp8266 supports TCP/IP stack apart from it’s microcontroller capabilities. Main advantage of this tiny/cheap chip is that it supports wifi connectivity, with full TCP/IP stack and IEEE 802.11 b/g/n WLAN protocol. Further, this chip is commonly available to buy starting from 2 USDs from ebay. shodan.io In this article i’m going to explain how two esp8266 devices can be used for open wifi credential harvesting attacks. Step 1 : De-authenticate connected clients from target Access Point(s) First, the attacker needs to de-authenticate client devices connected (and connecting) to free wifi access points. (Even though this step is not mandatory it will increase success rate of the attack) In order achieve this, attacker can exploit a major flaw in IEEE 802.11 WLAN protocol prior to amendment. In early IEEE 802.11 specifications(prior to 2009), management frames (which are responsible to authenticate, maintain and discontinue the communication) are not protected from underlying encryption mechanism. This enables anyone whom within the range of the target station to de-authenticate from access point by sending de-auth frames to the target station. IEEE 802.11w-2009 If you are curious about these frames you can use following search filter in wireshark to filter de-authenticate frames. First you need to put your wifi adapter in ‘monitor mode’ on a selected channel. (There are tons of out there how to monitor wifi packets using wireshark) tutorials (wlan.fc.type == 0)&&(wlan.fc.type_subtype == 12) Filter 802.11 management frames Filter ‘de-authenticate’ frames ( ) (wlan.fc.type==0): (wlan.fc.type_subtype==12): subtype 12 If you open up the ‘monitor mode’ for all the channels and in a congested area with lots of wireless devices, you’ll soon capture deauth frames through wireshark. 802.11 deauth frame If an attacker can replay these deauth frames continuously to a router or client station, it will fail to establish successful authentication. This vulnerability has already been fixed in IEEE 802.11 protocol for protected access points since 2009. But as wifi access points need to be backward compatible with old IEEE 802.11 specifications this vulnerability still remains intact in all most all commercial routers. Further, in this scenario wifi traffic won’t get encrypted as wifi connections are open. Therefore, management frames will remain unprotected in open wifi connections despite IEEE 802.11 2009 amendment. ESP8266 based WiFi Deauthenticator I’m not going to do a step by step walk-through how to create a ESP based deauthenticator. As there’s a well documented and many online tutorials how to use esp8266 as a wifi deauthenticator based on above mentioned vulnerability. open source project spacehuhn/esp8266_deauther Unlike a wifi jammer which adds noise to wifi communication frequencies (which disable all wifi communication within range), with this approach attacker can disable given target access points (eg: target open wifi access points) as required. Step 2 : Pretend to be the public wifi captive portal When a user can’t make successful connection to a legit open wifi access point, will eventually attempt for other available open wifi options. Now attacker just needs to host an open wifi access point with spoofing to harvest credentials from target audience. captive portal ESP8266 based Captive Portal Server esp8266 can act as a fully capable REST compliant server. For a single chip system this is pretty amazing. For just little as 2USD now you can get device powerful enough to host several web services. With some fiddling I was able to develop POC captive portal server which support following features : Captive portal which supports multiple platforms (windows, ubuntu, android) DNS server to spoof any inbound traffic Handle http rest requests and mechanism to stream resources to client Use builtin SPIFFS memory to store web pages(with js,css support) Write inputs from client to SPIFFS (on REST post request from client) Access and manage SPIFFS memory remotely. SSO(single sign-on) style credential spoofing This can be used to spoof credentials from any identity provider. it’s just a matter of adding convincing UI This is just a POC and facebook login is nothing like the actual facebook login UI. Adding a convincing UI with proper java script validations are really easy as all those are done from client device. esp8266 just need to stream html, css and java script resources when requested by client. Additionally credentials can validated by actual sso implementation with identity provider as well. If provided credentials are invalid login failure flow can be implemented. 3. Settings page for maintenance Hidden settings page for maintenance and collect credentials Hacker can do all maintenance and credential collections remotely by connecting just as another client. Since esp8266 have limited memory(4MB) data needs to be collected and clear before data file grow beyond memory limits.This can be further improved by adding simple monitor to data file size and upload the file if size exceeds certain limit. With this, hacker won’t have any direct involvement with the device as well. Another major advantage of esp8266 is that it can act as a dns server. Therefore, it can mimic any hostname(ex: www.facebook.poc.com). For the sake this POC all requests were routed to “192.168.1.1” regardless of the hostname. I’m not going to walk-through the code base and implementation as it will make this article unnecessarily lengthy. Hacker just need to prepare both esp8266 devices (step1:deauthenticator and step2:captive portal server) and place them securely near target audience. Thanks to esp8266 low power consumption, it will last weeks or may be months without need of a battery replacement as well. Epilogue ESP8266 certainly not the the only SoC device which capable of this type of attack. But it’s the easiest do such attack with minimum cost and effort. Further, manufacturers are developing new advanced SoCs with much higher capabilities. For example esp32 which got released in 2016. It’s the successor of esp8266 which contains Bluetooth, in addition to wifi connectivity. With advancements of IoT devices, there are silent security threats which can emerge out of nowhere. Users no longer have privilege to shutoff from security aspects, thinking no one will ever be interested in their identity. Unless they want some random hacker selling their identity along with thousands of other harvested credentials in dark web to some unknown party. THIS ARTICLE IS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY.
