By now, you probably already know how much I respect brands with strong communities. I truly believe that a genuine . I also know that building that community is extremely hard, and very few are able to nail it. community of die-hard fans is the brand's superpower So today, it’s gonna be a story of a brand that has a big army of die-hard fans standing next to them. Extremely loyal community whose retention is a lifetime! Fans who are so certain about their commitment that they get the brand's tattoo on their skin! But that’s now…And it’s not always been the case. No wonder. The brand has a 120 years history after all. Did you already guess the brand? Today, I will be writing about the one and only - Harley Davidson. Early Days It took 2 brothers (Arthur and Walter Davidson), a friend  (William Harley), a shed, and an idea to give birth to Harley Davidson’s first prototype in 1903. The initial business idea was to attach an engine to a standard motorcycle. The first Harley-Davidson factory was built in 1906 in Milwaukee (50 bikes were produced that year), and the company was officially incorporated in 1907. By 1914, was delivering mail with 4,800 Harley Davidson bikes. Later, the was using those bikes. After that, in the 1950s, used those too. USPS military police departments Let’s fast forward to the late 1960s when the company went almost bankrupt, and AMF (American Machine and Foundry) bought it. Those years seem to have been the worst period for the brand. AMF was manufacturing bowling equipment, tennis rackets, and snow skis before acquiring Harley Davidsson so it lacked the knowledge and expertise for the turnaround. As a result of their severe cost-cutting, the quality fell a lot, damaging the brand's reputation. During the same time, foreign motorcycles such as Yamaya and Honda came to the market with better quality and lower price tags and became very popular. Outlaw biker gangs riding Harley-Davidsons did not help the brand’s image either. Harley kept losing market share, and it was really tough! The Buyback After 12 years of ownership, in 1981, a group of 13 investors bought back Harley Davidson from AMF for $80 million. One of those investors (Willie G. Davidson), was one of the cofounder’s grandsons. At that point, they got a company with a damaged reputation, decreasing sales, and low morale among employees. But unlike AMF, new owners were dedicated to turning things around. So, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work. In order to change things, they needed a complete restructuring, revisiting the processes, and reevaluating everything. They needed a full restart. So what did they do? The Comeback To address the quality of their bikes, they outsourced many parts from foreign manufacturers. Eventually, they started building high-quality bikes again. Then they turned their gaze to the competitors. Instead of trying to fit in and produce bikes similar to those that Japanese brands brought, they decided to stay true to themselves, go back to their roots, and focus on motorcycles that looked like their pre-AMF older models. They decided to completely change their competitive and business strategies and bet on the brand community philosophy. Their community strategy became the core of everything. I guess back then they already realized that, in theory, everything can be copied: models, engineering innovative ideas, strategies, etc. - but one thing that can’t be copied and taken away from a brand is its community. And it worked! As a result, Harley Davidson became a brand that was beyond just bikes. It became an icon of something way more important. They managed to create an extremely strong connection between their brand and its community. But how? In this case, the whole company on a strategic level was committed to building a community, and marketing worked hard on shaping a community-centric brand. Community efforts bring the best results when they are not ONLY a marketing function. They launched HOG (Harley Owner’s Group) in 1983 so they could know their customers and build long-lasting relationships with them. More Than Motorcycles I imagine them getting together and going back to the most important basic question: Why do they do what they do? What are they about? What’s their mission? Let’s check their official mission statement. Here is the most important part of it below: “Our mission: More than building machines, we stand for the timeless pursuit of adventure. Freedom for the soul. Our ambition is to maintain our place as the most desirable motorcycle brand in the world.” They positioned themselves as being about things that are way bigger than just bikes. “Harley is not automotive. It might have an engine, it might have wheels, and it might run on roads, but that’s where the similarities stop.” -Mark Hans Richer, Former CMO Harley-Davidson Motor Company Harley Davidson’s impressive marketing was able to . They crafted a brand that’s built on (the strong ones!). re-defined brand loyalty and achieved a cult brand status customer loyalty, innovation, and emotions They promote not just a consumer product but a lifestyle and passion. In people’s mind, Harley Davidson is about one of the strongest desires: freedom. Freedom from mainstream values and status quo. Freedom to travel anywhere you want, whenever you want. Freedom of spirit! Harley gives people the freedom to experience an open world. The logo of the eagle and biker clothing supports the trait. Harley Davidson is also about individualism. You can be yourself no matter who you are. Everyone is equal in the community: no matter what’s your status, income, job, race, etc. The “brotherhood” of riders is united by a shared ethos and the passion for the Harley Davidson lifestyle. They share the road, the wind, and the free spirit! Who Shapes Who Though? I would argue that in the community-building effort, there comes a point when you see an important shift, and that’s when you realize that you made it - it worked. The shift is when you realize that the community is the one now shaping and leading the brand. When they become the heroes of the story at the epicenter of everything and choose the direction. IT’S NOT ABOUT THE BRAND itself but rather the PEOPLE around the brand! “People don’t fall in love with products or brands – they fall in love with the people that surround those products and brands, people who let them talk about themselves and feel a sense of belonging. -Ken Schmidt, the former director of communications for Harley Davidson And how do you put a price tag next to something so emotional? Well, apparently it’s to people. And here is why creating that emotional connection and building a genuine community is so important for a brand. worth a lot “If we were rational, logical people, you’d always go with the Honda,” said Ken. “But we’re not. You’ll go with the way more expensive Harley. You could buy three Hondas for the price of one Harley.” Why? Because of the community. You can’t buy community or transfer community – for better or worse, it’s permanently attached to a product or brand. And since that’s the case, it’s best to embrace your community and ensure it remains vibrant and authentic. - Ken Schmidt, the former director of communications for Harley Davidson Aftermath As of March 2023, there are approximately 1.5 million registered owners of Harley-Davidson motorcycles worldwide. Most of these people are die-hard fans who have never even been tempted to check out any other bike out there. Their loyalty is for life! There are only a few brands that people tattoo the logo on their bodies. But in Harley’s case, it’s so common that they have tattoo salons located inside some of their dealerships! What innovations are you bringing to your industry? What sets you apart from your competitors? Prelaunch.com is a product validation platform. Hardware companies are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on various research and focus group companies. It’s taking a lot of time and the results are not trustworthy as it’s based on peoples’ opinions, which can be biased. NV: Prelaunch takes away the bias by relying on customers actual buying behavior. It’s also 10x cheaper and faster. SE: What are your company’s industry major challenges right now? Product development is a long process. The "lean methodology" is considered a religion in software, but hardware companies still work in isolation without incorporating actionable customers' feedback into the production process. As a result, large amounts of money are invested in products that fail. One third of the entire stock in the fashion and hardware industries is unused stock, which is returned and is not recyclable. NV: SE: What stories aren’t currently being told about your industry that your audience should know? In order to understand the market demand, companies and founders create surveys and promote them in social media. It’s not only can result in wrong answers from wrong people, but is also very dangerous. It can rlead to the false-positive perception whereas there’s not a strong demand in the market, but the signals are positive. As well as false-negative, whereas the product actually has a not bad potential but the audience is wrong and doesn’t engage with it. When somebody pays actual money, it’s when their opinion starts to matter. NV: SE: How do you envision your business changing in the next 3-5 years? In 3-5 years these practices should become a standard for any new innovative product development. Companies across various verticals of ecommerce will prelaunch their early stage concepts, assess the data, meet their customers and confidently co-create meaningful innovations together. NV: SE: What changes do you think are necessary for your industry to stay competitive in current economic times? Don’t work in isolation, don’t assume that the market remains the same and will consume the exact products that were popular last year. But rather, actively engage with your potential customers at a very early stage, get feedback and assess te data. It will help you to not waste precious resources on products that don’t have a demand. NV: SE: What measures has your organization taken to ensure you're driving towards the most important goals? We are implementing what we advocate others to implement. We have a closed group composed from our creators who constantly participate in product creation and actively engage with the testing of new features and in defining the priorities. It helps us not spend resources on developing features that are not the most important ones. NV: SE: Anything else we should know? The idea of building a community has always been a romantic one in the business world. What if your revolutionary startup concept could bring together a group of like-minded and passionate people? It’s easy to see which companies have successfully drawn a crowd with their innovative ways — think of Apple’s avid devotees, or the many thousands of Peloton junkies. But the best communities don’t always form after the fact. Some of the most successful businesses today set out to build a community right from the get-go; their entire business model is based not around commodity, but community. HubSpot, for example, wouldn’t be where it is today without its community-first growth model. I recently sat down with Lloyed Lobo on my podcast. He’s the co-chair of , a community of over 100k+ founders and tech professionals. Our conversation made me realize that building a community can be just as important to success as the product itself — so that’s what we’re talking about today. Traction Commodity vs. Community: What’s the Difference? The traditional business model is a pretty straightforward one: your business sells a product or service, and then you charge customers for it. This is a commodity-based model on the idea of providing value through an object or experience. But there’s a new model on the scene, and it’s being used to incredible success by the likes of HubSpot, Harley-Davidson, Salesforce, and more. The operates on a different principle: providing value through relationships. community-based business model It’s not about selling products or services — it’s about connecting people with shared interests to create meaningful experiences that go beyond what could be achieved individually. This is the basis of any good social network, but in this case, those connections are made for economic and social purposes. Great Examples of Community-Based Businesses So how does the community-based business model actually work? I browsed around to see which companies are doing it right, and found some pretty incredible examples. H.O.G. Local Chapters One of the most obvious is . When the company booted up almost 120 years ago, it was your classic commodity-based business. But as a fanbase began to grow, a culture formed — and the brand became infamous, as we know. Even people with absolutely zero interest in motorcycles know what a Harley is these days. Harley-Davidson Harley-Davidson’s community is called ‘H.O.G. Local Chapters’, and the letters stand for . The word ‘HOG’ was being thrown around way back in the roaring ’20s when Harley owners dominated racing events. Now, though, the brand has made it an official part of its identity — and being a H.O.G. member has plenty of perks. Harley Owners Group For just $49 per year, Harley owners get access to things like exclusive magazines, roadside assistance, event access tickets, Visa points, merch, and a whole list of other benefits. Family members can even join for a slightly lower fee. Most importantly, members join their local Chapter; they can rally and ride alongside other passionate Harley owners. I’m not a motorcycle fanatic, but even as I was looking through the H.O.G. website, I could feel the energy of the community — and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful for Harley-Davidson as a business. They’re profiting off of the joy and camaraderie shared between fellow riders. And they certainly treat their members well! LEGO Ideas Toys are toys — and like it or not, they cycle through phases. No one plays with Polly Pocket anymore. LEGO has found a way to make itself immortal, though, which I have great respect for. The LEGO business strategy has always struck me as one of the very best. In a nutshell, LEGO has built a community around collection and nostalgia. You can join the and post your designs for everyone else to see — and if your designs are particularly great (meaning you get lots of votes from the community), your design might make it onto LEGO shelves. LEGO Ideas community Looking through the LEGO Ideas profiles, it was clear that most of the community grew up playing with LEGO and are relishing the opportunity to use their old skills on new tricks. Just look at these bios from some of its community members: “I love lego and have since I was a child and I got my first lego set. I have been hooked ever since. Now I share the joy of lego with my daughter and my nieces and nephews. I love to spread the joy of lego. I think it’s the most amazing toy or even just the best product in the world. It changes lives for the better.” — Vonbrikenstein “Since 2014 I have been gripped by Lego fever again. With the Ideas set “Ghostbusters Ecto-1” (21108) I found my way back to the small bricks.” — Hob72 “I’m a lifelong fan of LEGO who has been lucky enough to translate a childhood passion for design into a fulfilling career as an Architect. But I bet you’re wondering how this all gets monetized. To be blunt, most of the LEGO profits come from their toy sales. However, there’s a definite business strategy to all of this. Here’s how it works: Within the LEGO Ideas community, new competitions and challenges are run pretty much every week. The company posts exercises to help its members level up their brick skills.Members can sign up for free and post their designs. They can also support other creators by voting. For the particularly talented builders, their designs go in the running to be made into real-life LEGO sets (like this awesome typewriter you might have seen floating around the internet!) So, how does it all make money? Well, with thousands of members and avid builders… they’re going to need a of LEGO. The community keeps people buying more bricks to fuel their creative passions. It’s perfect, really. lot Traction Since Lloyed Lobo is the inspiration for today’s newsletter, it’s only right that I mention , of which he’s the co-chair. Traction If you haven’t heard of Boast.ai before, it’s an innovative software that helps companies get the most out of R&D tax credits minus the usual rigmarole. Traction is its community of over 110,000 members — tech heads, business owners, investors, and innovators. The whole community is based around this idea of innovation in entrepreneurship. With industry icons like Jeff Lawson of Twilio, Kip Bodnar of HubSpot, and Julia Hartz of Eventbrite, it’s bursting with the most inventive and hardworking minds. Conferences, podcasts, and webinars deliver high-caliber education to thousands upon thousands of members each year. One of their most recent webinars was run by Vinay Hiremath, co-founder of Loom — so they’ve got some impressive names contributing to the community. It’s a simple monetization process; I imagine there’s a fee to attend conferences and webinars, which provides funds for the company and value to the community members. The members themselves seem to absolutely love the experience: “Traction is THE community to supercharge your business by learning from thought-leaders of the fastest-growing companies in the world!” — Daniel Saks, AppDirect Salesforce and have a very similar setup in which they bring together like-minded people to share their ideas and expertise. If you look around at some of the most successful companies today, you often don’t need to dig too far to find an adjoining community. HubSpot How To Monetize Your Community It’s pretty standard for the community model to use monetization strategies like paid events, subscriptions, and product add-ons. But really, it’s up to the individual business to find out what works best for them. Here are some of the most convincing strategies I found while researching: It’s rarely a good idea to charge a membership fee; usually customers just won’t bother, since they have no proof it’ll be worth their cash. Make the membership free, but lock certain pieces of valuable content (webinars, templates, etc.) behind a paywall. Restricted access. Slashing prices for your members is often the best way to get more sales through the community. Plus, it makes people feel special — which is invaluable when it comes to customer loyalty. Discounts, coupons, and other deals. Offer opportunities for relevant businesses to advertise or showcase their products in forums and other areas of the community. Ads and product placement. This is one strategy that can help if you’re charging membership fees. On the H.O.G. website, there’s a huge list of all the extra benefits you get with a Harley-Davidson membership. It’s certainly impressive, even to an outsider looking in. Make sure your members know what they’re getting for their money. Make your perks obvious. Have you got a product that members can, and would like to, trade among themselves? You can monetize that by adding a small fee for each transaction. Create a trading space. This works particularly well if you’ve got a figurehead within your community who people look up to. Sell tickets to exclusive webinars or even one-on-one consulting sessions with that person. Leverage exclusivity. You can get pretty creative with this. Just keep in mind that the money won’t always flow straight away; community building doesn’t happen overnight. But Is It Worth The Hassle? This is a great question because, let’s face it — community building isn’t easy. Businesses that naturally gather a crowd of engaged users are fortunate, since they can set up a monetized structure around the pre-existing group. But even then, it’s hard to give your community something of value they’ll actually pay for. That being said, the benefits of a community-based business model are enormous. You’re not just relying on a product to garner and maintain popularity; you’re benefiting from the collective energy of people who actively use and advocate for your product or services. It’s a self-sustaining system that can bring an extra layer of profits to your business. Think about LEGO Ideas, for example. They’ve got billions of dollars coming in from toy sales, LegoLand tickets, online stores, and so on. But on top of that, they’ve managed to dredge up an entirely new stream of revenue just by setting up a community for nostalgic builders. Never underestimate the power of nostalgia! And, of course, there’s the added bonus of increased customer loyalty. People who are part of a thriving and engaged community will naturally be more loyal to your brand than those who just buy a product off the shelf. We’ve all seen — customers value human connection much more than they used to. The community-based model provides that connection in spades. the statistics What Will The Future Hold? I truly believe — as does Lloyed Lobo — that future businesses are going to be increasingly more community-based. It’s impossible to look away from the success of initiatives like Traction and LEGO Ideas, and it’s only a matter of time before other companies start to adopt the model. That being said, there are some caveats. It’s important to remember that communities don’t just appear out of thin air; they have to be nurtured with care and attention. You’ve got to give your customers something special — whether that’s exclusive deals or insider knowledge — that’s worth their time. Someone commented on LinkedIn that the next big thing web3 startups need to focus on is creating a “ ” and it just triggered me the wrong way. minimum viable community I keep seeing people using this word like a child uttering a swear word for the first time and the parents hastily trying to stop it. Only their behavior delights the sprog and so they repeat it over and over, getting louder and louder, all the while everyone around them standing laughing as the parents crawl into a hole and die. Community the condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common. Customer a person who buys goods or services from a shop or business. Fandom the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. regarded collectively as a community or subculture. Cult a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society. I covered some of this before in but it’s clear it needs fucking repeating. Chapter 3 Definition — Community: a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Or if you want to break it down, “a group of people living in the same place [echo chamber] or having a particular characteristic in common [being completely fucking gullible]”. I don’t understand posts that claim community, collaboration and co-opetition didn’t exist before web3. They have nothing to do with technology and everything to do with strategy and people. They existed, they always have. You are a customer of Starbucks. You don’t belong to a community. You don’t care about anyone else in that store when you order a latte. You are a customer of Mcdonald’s. You don’t belong to a community. You don’t care about anyone else in that restaurant when you order that burger. You can’t even call yourselves fans. Consumers don’t think how they feel. They don’t say what they think and they don’t do what they say.” — David Ogilvy In these examples, there’s a killer point that I don’t think a lot appreciate — habit. Habits drive a lot more behavior than people realize. When they see others form a habit it encourages a network effect. There’s also one more — blanket coverage. McDonald's and Starbucks are everywhere. There are hundreds of variations of Colgate toothpaste that are all the same just with different packaging and it’s a tactic to shut out other brands from being front of mind. You’re therefore being conditioned to form a habit around a choice you no longer have the freedom to make. You are just a customer with a habit you didn’t ask for. You’re not part of a community. You’re not part of a fandom. But you could argue that the conditioning you’ve experienced is nothing less than cult-like. Sounds a lot like the fever surrounding Bored Apes and Axie Infinity to me. Steve Jobs didn’t famously say “ ” for example and for good reason which I’ll explain below. So many investors have fallen foul of this community phenomenon by using it as a yardstick for the quality of the project. Morons. start with the community and work backward to the technology Let me regale you a tale of yore, precisely 20 years ago in fact. I owned a slightly modded Subaru Impreza Turbo. They were great cars, and it was in Sonic Blue, the same color as the UK P1 variant. I joined , a BBS forum for owners of all things Subaru, and set about learning everything I could about the cars, modifications, etc. Scoobynet I spent hours talking to people from all over the world. I bought secondhand parts from some to modify the car further. I posted about spotting other Scooby’s on the road so I could connect to them and say ‘hi’. We flashed our headlights at each other when we passed one another. We met up in groups and, well, just talked and had fun. Even when I had surgery for a back problem I loaned the car out to one of them whom I’d never met in real life to basically keep the car running tip-top instead of seizing up on the driveway. This is what a group of passionately random people do when they congregate over something they share a love for. Yes, it all sounds incredibly sad but this is community. We’ve existed for some time, odd that. Even in the games industry, as toxic as it can get, there are players who form genuine communities and bonds to the point they become lifelong friends. Harley Davidson is another such example where you don’t just own a product, you become part of one of the planet’s biggest communities much in the same way I did with my Subaru. And when one of them dies they mourn. And they all mourn collectively. You should be lucky to experience hundreds of Harleys thundering down the street to pay their last respects, tens of modified Subarus with that exhaust burble, or hundreds of players who log on and all travel to one location in the game to share their memories of a friend. They all make the headlines. Now let’s turn our attention to what Web3 is about and all this bullshit about community. Because it’s not community. It’s a cult. It’s easy to confuse the two, you’re sharing common interests but at the moment the difference is pretty obvious — web3 and everything it brings to the table is just fashionable for a lot of people without any real connection. You can tell instantly who is really a part of a community or just part of a cult every time to log into a Discord server. The talk is never about sharing personal stories or genuinely being interested in what’s going on with others — it’s about when the next NFT drop is, how best to pump the token, or how to create a pyramid scheme to make money from the next poor sap who can’t afford the buy-in. Owning a Discord server or a bunch of Twitter bots does not equate to a community, and yet so many naive investors fall for this trick. A community actively adds value to whatever it’s attached to, like a community of developers working on an open-source project to improve the software. How many so-called communities are actually just filled with passive lurkers who live vicariously through the actions of others? They cheer from the sidelines but never actively take part or have even bought into the service or project they’re fervently passionate about. Again, how many investors so desperate to have a windfall in Web3 have fallen for this as proof of market validation? How many hodlers will turn up at the funeral of Ape#34574.5 I wonder…fuck all is the most likely answer. Who’s going to care if Moonbird #2342 fell off her bike and broke her back? “Hey everyone, doctors think I’ll never walk again.” WAGMI! People in Web3 are almost like a new segmentation, they sit between being a customer and being the product. They are a byproduct of being part of a cult with the delusion of being a community. It’s not the minimum viable community you’re creating, it’s a minimum viable cult. And you can buy them cheap because a community will stick by you, cults just migrate from one fashionable lure to another for the promise of something better than the last. I’m being harsh of course but for good reason. You can’t even claim to be part of fandom for example because you pump and dump so fast you don’t even care whether a project lives or dies, or care enough to still be a fan years later and admit it. How many of us are still fans of defunct TV shows that passed into shadow long ago but we still talk about them, defend them, and yearn for just one more season or a reboot? ( ) yeah, I’m talking about Firefly lol How many of you will still talk about Mfers or some other shitty PFP project in 5 years time when it inevitably goes tits up and is worthless? “In 1.0, your community is IRL and based on things like where you were born, where you went to school, what sports team you supported, etc. In 2.0, your community was a URL, where you joined interest-based online groups across Facebook, Reddit, Discord, etc. In 3.0, the community is all about ownership. Being part of a community means you’re providing funding to run the community and gaining transparency and voting power.” Do you hear yourselves when you say this out loud? Do you think Starbucks is going to invite you to the next investors' call and ask your opinion just because you joined their new NFT rewards program? And do you finally recognize that Web2 brands using pseudo-web3 principles and technologies are still Web2?! Not a single person on the internet in 2022 can deny that we're living in the age of content overload. Businesses are pumping out email funnels and blog posts faster than anyone can consume them, and the vast majority of it is falling on deaf ears. But there's something we're missing here. What happened to building a community, rather than simply blasting your content out into the void? Where did the element of human connectedness go? Sometimes, content creation just doesn't cut it. Sometimes, we need to bring our business tactics back to the basics; connecting with our clients and consumers on a real, human level. In today's newsletter recap, we'll be discussing all things community – why your business needs one, how to build one, and why churning out content will never get you the connectedness you need to thrive. Let's dive in. Following Vs. Community – What's The Difference? There's a trend running through many of the businesses you see and interact with today. I'll describe it to you, and I think you'll find it familiar. I'm talking about the business that sends out at least a few emails a week, often with conversational language and 'relatable' content. Their social media is sleek and on-brand, with posts that are either educational or aspirational. They might even have a blog. You might even like it. But despite all of this, they feel...somewhat one-dimensional. You have no concept of the person running things behind the screen. Even though their blog posts all start with "Hey there!" and their social media bios tout how much they love connecting with others, you don't feel an iota of authenticity coming through. Why? Because they're not actually connecting with you. They're following a content strategy that's been shown to work, and they're hoping it will result in customers coming to them instead of the other way around. What you're looking for – the part that feels missing – is something most businesses are unwilling or unequipped to provide: a community. Business Can Be A Two-Way Street In 2021, Sprout Social posted their . It gave incredible insight into how social media users want to connect with businesses; in fact, the study found that 64 percent of consumers want brands to connect with them. #BrandsGetReal study What's more, almost half of surveyed consumers want brands to a) bring people together, and b) unite people from different backgrounds. If that doesn't scream community, I don't know what does. Sprout Social even titled one of their subsections 'Connection Is The New Currency'. In other words, we're no longer content with one-way interactions with businesses. We want to feel like we're a part of something, that we belong. We want to be able to talk to the people behind the business and have those conversations feel authentic. That's what community provides: a two-way street where businesses can connect with their consumers and vice versa. And it's a totally doable shift in this day and age; we have greater access to social platforms than ever before. What Do Business Communities Look Like? When I say community, I don't just mean a group of Instagram followers who watch your business stories and leave nice comments. I'm talking about a real-life community where people can gather, share experiences, and support one another. There are all sorts of businesses out there that have built thriving communities around their work: launched the Harley Owners Club, through which the company organizes social gatherings, special events, and more for its community of motorcycle enthusiasts. Harley-Davidson In the fitness world, has built an incredibly tight-knit community of people who share a love for working out hard and supporting one another. actively welcomes design concepts for new products from its community, and works closely with the designers to bring their ideas to life. CrossFit LEGO has an incredibly engaged community of DIYers who share tips, tricks, and product reviews on the Creator's Studio website. The company runs special challenges and activities through the community site and engages directly with its users. Rust-Oleum What all of these businesses have in common is a genuine desire to connect with their consumers. They've realized that it's not about blasting out content and hoping people will stick around – it's about creating an environment where the community can thrive. The businesses that truly stand out here are the ones who understand that their consumer base is humans with feelings and interests beyond the products they sell. They go above and beyond to create a community that feels welcoming, supportive, and engaging. One of the reasons for his immense success – among many, many others – is his commitment to building and investing in his community of followers. Why Community Is Important, According to Daniel Just after the one-hour mark in our Success Story podcast conversation, I asked Daniel about his personal brand strategy and how he weighs up the importance of building a community. "Someone once told me that people never transform based on what you do, but on who you are. And nobody can truly know who you are unless you spend time and sit down with them." This brings us back to the idea that, above all else, your consumer base are just people. They are human. And, as humans naturally do, they crave authenticity. They want to see that you're real, that you have a human side, and that they can connect with you on some level. Obviously, we can't sit down with every single client or potential consumer and have a conversation. It's just not feasible to share a deep and meaningful connection with that many people. But it's about building a community where you can. Whether that's through a Facebook group you actively moderate, or a Twitter chat you host on a monthly basis, community is key. Daniel's Strategies for a Thriving Community As it turns out, interacting with your clientele in person isn't totally out of the question – and Daniel makes it happen. Here are a few of the strategies he's actively implementing as part of his online financial education company, The Kwak Brothers. 1. Retreats Daniel explained to me that, because of the nature of conferences – i.e. a few speakers doing all of the talking – it can be difficult to truly get to know people. So, he hosts retreats instead. "I hesitate doing a conference, but I will do retreats. I have this retreat coming up in November where I'm hosting 35 to 40 entrepreneurs. We just get to dive deep and talk about our businesses individually, and do life together." While there will be some speakers present, Daniel emphasized that the getting together aspect was more important. "I'm bringing in some pretty cool speakers, don't get me wrong. But [doing life together] is what it's gonna be all about." 2. Free Meetups Because the Kwak Brothers are all about educating and equipping people with the tools they need to be successful, meetups are a great way for Daniel and his brother to motivate their community members as they continue their journey to success. "I do a free meetup; I do it twice a month, and if people want to join, they can just go to TheKwakBrothers.com." Meetups are such a simple and effective way to show your audience that you are real, you've got their best interests at heart, and you're willing to take time out of your busy schedule to connect on an authentic level. 3. Giveaway Resources What I picked up from our interview is that Daniel is a totally generous guy. He wants to help others, and he's not shy about giving as many free resources away as he can. "We just released a free course – we call it Basecamp – and it's 50 hours' worth of material on real estate investing entrepreneurship. We have a productivity course on there. I'm filming a mini raising capital course to put on there, and we just give it for free. I try to give as much as I can away, content-wise." While this doesn't directly build community, it does help to show your audience that you care and want them to succeed. 4. The Kwak Brothers YouTube Channel The Kwak Brothers have a YouTube channel with almost 300k subscribers. And, while the brothers don't actively produce videos every day, they do make sure to pop in a few times a week. YouTubers are another example of excellent community builders. You'll find that the most popular channels have a tight-knit community of subscribers who feel like they know the YouTuber on a personal level. They take requests, they ask for input, and they genuinely seem to care about their viewers. On top of all of the other community-building he does, Daniel's YouTube presence is really the cherry on top. It helps to keep people connected with him and his company, and it's a great way to show off the personality behind the brand. What Else Can You Do? I was super appreciative of the conversation I had with Daniel, and it was awesome to hear the many ways that he's fostering a strong community within the business. If in-person retreats and meetups isn't an option for your business, however, what are some other things you can do to foster a sense of community among your customers and followers? Let's take a look. Livestream, Livestream, Livestream! I mentioned it previously, and I'll say it once more – you need to show your consumer base that you are a real, living, and breathing human being. Livestreaming is one of the most powerful ways to do this. You can answer questions, give sneak peeks at new products or upcoming features, and even just have a casual conversation with your viewers. Especially for small businesses, this is a really efficient way to build trust and rapport with your customers. And it's not just one-way either. Ask your viewers to submit questions or ideas, and reward the best ones with a shout-out or even a prize. A Podcast, Perhaps? This is one I can personally attest to. Podcasts rock! I've been able to meet so many incredible people, learn new things, and even score a few business opportunities as a result of my podcast. Not to mention, it's been great for my brand awareness. If you already have a podcast, make sure you're using it to its fullest potential. Are you doing interviews? Are you soliciting questions from your listeners? Are you repurposing your content into other formats (like blog posts or social media)? Get Creative My mind always drifts back to Lego when talking about community engagement. It's incredibly cool that the brand asks its biggest fans to submit designs for new sets. Not only does this create a sense of ownership and belonging for fans, but it also results in some insanely creative designs. What kind of contests or challenges can you come up with? Can you feature customer stories on your website or social media? Is there a product you can get customer buy-in on before releasing it? Start a Side Group Like the Rust-Oleum example I mentioned earlier, some businesses lend themselves perfectly to the formation of an inside club or group. This could be a Facebook group – but a branded website is even better. Think about it – this is a captive audience that's interested in what you do. You can foster a sense of community by sharing exclusive content, discounts, or sneak peeks at new products. You could even go so far as to hold live events (like webinars) or offer group coaching sessions. It also gives your community a chance to self-regulate and interact with one another. They can help answer questions, bond over your products or services, and get lively conversations going. Whatever you choose, the basic element of connectedness and two-way communication is key. Be personable. Be willing to spend the time it takes to build a community around your business. Give generously, like Daniel Kwak – and watch your business thrive.
