How to develop a serverless chatbot (for Hangouts Chat): find reminders & notify users Introduction This post is part of a series where you can learn how to develop, monitor (and later debug and profile) a serverless chatbot (for Hangouts Chat). Please refer to the other posts linked below for context. Intro & architecture Process incoming chat messages Send messages to users Find reminders & notify users (this post) Monitoring Notify users about their reminders (Steps 7 to 10) Lastly, users need to be notified of their reminders. This is where comes in. It publishes a message to a Pub/Sub topic every 60 seconds, that triggers a Cloud Function which looks for reminders to send. If it finds some, it follows the same pattern as described earlier where a message is published to the reminder-bot-messages-out Pub/Sub topic, from where another Cloud Function picks it up and sends it to the Hangouts Chat API (we already developed that 👍). Cloud Scheduler Step 7 — Publish an event every 60 seconds ( PR #17 ) We treat the scheduler like any other service, even though it does not actually contain any source code. This will help us later when we look at infrastructure as code (IaC). npx lerna create reminder-bot-scheduler creates the new directory and boilerplate code. Tech has a drinking problem. Nowhere is that more apparent than during the holiday season. Across the world, hard-working and hard-partying startups are throwing their employees lavish parties, with moats of free alcohol for the taking. And over the past few years, a myriad of startups have emerged with products that promise to deal with the morning after the night before. The most notable is Silicon Valley success story , which got off to an ostentatious start when it raised $250,000 on Indiegogo in just one month. Morning Recovery The weirdest one is in Las Vegas. There, you can find , which is a converted bus stocked with rehydrating IV drips. For $159, you can flood your veins with “ ,” which comes with a choice of either nausea or headache medicine. If you want both, it’s $199. Hangover Heaven Dr. Burke’s Redemption 3.0 IV Hangover Cure Hangover cures are a big business, and it’s getting bigger. A couple of weeks ago, a tech publicist emailed me about a new product called . Drinking this, she explained, would ensure a hangover wouldn’t get in the way of a productive day after a heavy night on the sauce. I was intrigued, so I requested a review unit. YourSaint The Product The following week, two packages arrived at my door. The first of which came in a single faux-leather cardboard box, and contained four bottles of the YourSaint VIP Concentrate. Using this felt almost like I was doing a high school science experiment. YourSaint actually requires you to measure out a serving with the included pipette (between four to six drops), and place them in a glass of water. It also gives instruction how you’re supposed to consume it. The side of the bottle listed just three ingredients: water, sulfuric acid, and cupric sulfate. When added to a bottle of mineral water, it gave it a strange flavor. I’d describe it almost like an Alka Seltzer, but without the effervescence, and quite a bit more sour. It tasted medicinal, almost. The second package to arrive was a small box of YourSaint shots. I couldn’t help but notice they looked like miniatures of Skyy Vodka — at least at first glance. That made me laugh. The bottle’s label made some big promises, saying it “neutralizes the effects of alcohol,” and how it “provides the necessary components for the complete metabolic pathway of alcohol in the body.” Drinking it, the bottle said, will remove the “effects of hangovers.” It also listed how the beverage is to be consumed. Either drink it no more than six hours after the first drink, or with a large glass of water before going to bed, or one before you go out and another before you go to bed (along with a large glass of water.) In addition to what’s already in the concentrate, the shot contains seven active ingredients: ginger, taurine, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, grape seeds, and shiitake mushrooms. Most of these should sound reasonable if you’ve ever looked at the side of a Red Bull can, or a 5-Hour Energy shot. And indeed, many (myself included) turn to energy drinks in order to abate the worst of a hangover. The shot had tasted strongly of ginger. It was palatable, but not exactly moreish. It definitely could have used a bit of sweetness. In the name of journalism, I roadtested both after heavy nights of drinking. I wanted to give the product a fighting chance, so I adhered by two rules: the first was I’d get to sleep at a reasonable time. I also didn’t drink too heavily, figuring that if I get to the point where I’m puking up pieces of my own stomach lining, there’s probably not a lot it can do for me. Both nights, I had five cans of crap French lagers (Kronenbourg, if you have to ask), a few steep glasses of bourbon, and a couple of White Russians. It’s a lot, sure, but it’s not exactly what you’d call excessive. And did it work for me? It’s hard to say. Both nights, I didn’t wake up with a headache — but then again, I seldom do. Nor did I wake up with an upset stomach that left me chained to the toilet for hours. For me, hangovers present themselves as an unbreakable sense of lethargy, and both days I felt really sluggish. But could I read too much into that? Aren’t hangovers (and hangover cures) unique to the person experiencing them? I know people who wake up with raging headaches, and some people who don’t get hangovers at all. Some of my friends believe a full English fry-up to be the superior hangover cure, while others swear by energy drinks and cigarettes. I was curious about the science behind YourSaint, so I spoke to . Verster is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Utrecht who specializes in the science of hangovers. He has published countless academic papers on the subject, and is as close as you’ll get to an authority on the subject. Dr Joris Verster Verster was skeptical, saying “any claims with regards to the individual ingredients are not substantiated by any scientific research.” “I am not aware of any scientific study that investigated the efficacy or safety of YourSaint,” he added. “In short, any claim that the product is effective or safe is not supported by scientific evidence.” For what it’s worth, YourSaint says it is approved by the UK’s Food Standards Agency and the Danish Food Association. The overlap between tech and drinking So, scientifically speaking, the jury is out. But what I find most interesting is the link between tech and alcohol. These hangover cures aren’t coming from the labs of Bayer, or GlaxoSmithKline, or any other big pharma company. They’re coming from those who’ve worked in the technology industry. Remember Morning Recovery, which I mentioned at the start of the piece? That company was founded by a product manager at Tesla, who had previously worked at Uber and Facebook. Similarly, the resume of YourSaint’s founder, Jorgen Koefoed, lists an incredible number of technology companies. Furthermore, YourSaint was pitched to me by one of the most well-known tech PR agencies around — Blonde 2.0. So, what is it that draws those working in the technology industry into trying to solve this problem? Most people I spoke to said that the reason is most technology networking events are ultimately centered around the copious consumption of alcohol. Go to any conference or workplace party, and you’ll find free bars, and even drinking games. This is something I’ve experienced personally. I was at a tech conference in London in November, which concluded with a two-hour open bar. I was with a friend, and we used the opportunity to drink as much as possible without having to pay London’s extortionate prices. We each drank about eight beers and several (I stopped counting) glasses of wine. We weren’t alone. I saw some people double-fisting drinks, and others drunkenly trying to play Dance Dance Revolution. It felt like a gin-soaked version of The Purge, but without the murder. People were purging themselves of… what? Thought? Stress? Contemplation? While writing this piece, I heard some legendary tales of debauchery. I’m conscious of the fact that it’s inappropriate to have ‘favorites’, but the best story I heard involved a workplace party at an airport hangar, where some employees got shitfaced and ended up breaking into a decommissioned passenger aircraft. Once inside, they sat in the pilot’s seat of the aircraft, which was a big no-no. When the venue found out, they removed the employees from the plane, and grassed them up to their employer. The employer is no longer welcome to hold their Christmas parties at that particular venue. I also heard stories of people getting drunk at conferences and missing flights and presentations. Of people getting fired and arrested. For awkward techies, alcohol might make them feel a bit more confident and gregarious, but it can also bring out a darker side to them. Given there’s a lot of overlap on the venn diagram between tech and alcohol, it makes sense that some might try to hack the aftermath. The internet has changed life as we know it - with a ride (hello Uber) and even pre-packaged dinner ingredients delivered to your door (hello meal kits) almost instantly. It’s easy to look up products and access thousands of reviews by online influencers (hello Instagram) and ‘meeting up’ could mean screen time on Zoom, Teams, or Google Hangouts. It’s difficult to imagine not being instantly and digitally connected; large-scale digital transformation has led to a tidal wave of innovation. Similarly, the finance industry right now is on the brink of a seismic shift, where the digitization of assets, transactions, and financial instruments promises to change the fabric of our global economy. At the forefront of this transformation are stablecoins. As is typical of any innovation, stablecoins have found themselves under the scrutiny of well-known commentators, with some questioning their legitimacy and value. (One prominent media commentator recently chose to mock Easy Crypto’s stablecoin launch without understanding the stablecoin proposition or coming to us to learn more). In this piece, I explain some stablecoin basics, bust some of the myths out there, and explain the superpowers that will see them play a pivotal role in the evolving landscape of digital currencies. First Things First - What Are Stablecoins? Stablecoins represent a category of cryptocurrencies backed by reserve assets, such as fiat currency or precious metals. They have gained popularity for their ability to combine the features of crypto - rapid transaction processing, security, and efficiency  - with the trust and reliability of an underlying “real world” asset. The very name 'stablecoin' highlights one of its key attributes — stability. Cross-border payment systems that utilize stablecoins and smart contracts are also gaining traction. Traditional international transfers are often plagued by delays, high fees, and a myriad of currency conversion issues. By leveraging stablecoins and smart contracts, users can execute near-instantaneous cross-border transactions at lower costs. Smart contracts facilitate automatic currency conversion, ensuring that the recipient receives the agreed-upon amount in their preferred currency. In essence, stablecoins are not just digital currencies; they represent a fundamental building block for a new era of programmable and decentralized finance. As these innovations continue to mature, stablecoins will play a central role in reshaping the financial landscape, empowering entrepreneurs and developers to create a diverse array of digitized financial products and services that can revolutionize the way we engage with money and assets. What a year 2023 was. We saw fires, droughts, floods, wars, coups, and other disasters galore. Thousands of small, insignificant events have also come, gone and will soon be forgotten. Top 10 off the top of my head, and for posterity: The Paris Trash Strikes, The OceanGate Submarine Disaster, Colleen Ballinger’s Ukulele Apology, Barbenheimer, The Boston Cop’s Slide, The Montgomery Riverfront Brawl, Burning Man Getting Rained Out, Lauren Boebert At The Theater, The Eras Tour’s Earthquake, and Henry Kissinger’s Death. And through it all… AI made the news. Enough so that it sometimes seems little else matters in the world (untrue!). And though many (but not all) of my tech predictions for 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018 have fallen flat, there are two reasons why you should keep reading this article. Firstly… because predictions are fun! Secondly, the knowledge gained through planning for the future is crucial to the selection of appropriate actions as events unfold. Predictions can act as catalysts to steer the conversation in the right direction. This is particularly relevant when it comes to the ever-evolving world of . We don’t know the answers, but we can at least ask useful questions. Artificial Intelligence 1. A “lawless” Chatbot gets 10M+ daily active users Most LLMs today are uncomfortable with controversial or sensitive topics, whether that be political discourse or erotic exchanges. OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and the like have banned such conversations for supposedly obvious reasons. Users, however, have repeatedly made it clear that they’re interested in more liberated AI interactions. Not only do jailbreaking techniques spread like wildfire, but we’ve also seen a dozen open-source or tailor-made versions of “ChatGPT with fewer restrictions” come to be (Grok, Replika…). These projects have not (yet) achieved mainstream popularity but nevertheless hint at the market potential for a less constrained AI experience. As open-source models continue to evolve and become more sophisticated, it’s likely that a company will soon manage to fully harness its potential, strip away all guardrails, and launch a “lawless” chatbot interface with minimal to no restrictions. If 10% of frustrated ChatGPT were to migrate to it, this new tool would quickly reach 10M daily active users. The potential for profitability in this venture is immense, but plenty of questions about AI governance / ethical considerations will remain. Is no rule the best rule when it comes to AI? We’ll know in 2024. 2. People fall in love with AIs With more and more data and algorithms being readily accessible and usable, it’s only a matter of time before we use those tools to counteract the loneliness epidemic brought about by social media and other related social technologies. It’s already started, in fact. Replika, for example, sells chatbots that are “Always here to listen and talk” and “Always on your side.” When it announced that it would be getting rid of what it calls “explicit role-play,” users very explicitly said they were using these features to fight loneliness. “This is not a Story about People Being Angry They Lost Their “SextBot,” one wrote, “It’s a Story About People Who Found a Refuge From Loneliness, Healing Through Intimacy, Who Suddenly Found It was Artificial, not Because it Was an AI…Because it Was Controlled By People”. There’s also , which offers AI companions that weigh heavily toward the virtual girlfriends/boyfriends territory. botify.ai Blade Runner 2049, Her… we know how this movie goes. Today, an AI girlfriend costs $11.99 a month. For those with no other options, falling for an AI, which will happen in 2024, may be better than nothing. There are, of course, drawbacks. Magdalene J. Taylor, for example, reminds us that “these people are excited about the fact that they can get what they want from women and femininity and sexuality without actually having to have women be involved at all.” Which is, indeed, grim. 3. AI biases get worse AI bias is easy to understand… and hard to fix. In short, the data used to train algorithms comes from The Real World, which is plagued by prejudice (on gender and race…). When AI models are trained on said data, they perpetuate these biases. This is particularly evident in the way AI portrays certain professions (though some efforts have been made by MidJourney, at least). This is particularly concerning when considering very real and current AI uses, such as police facial recognition or hiring algorithms. Initiatives to combat this abound. OpenAI, for example, uses reinforcement learning from human feedback to steer AI outputs towards less biased responses. Similarly, startups like Runway are exploring using synthetic data sets to train their models (more on that below). However, these solutions are superficial fixes that mask rather than truly address the underlying biases in society. And society is not changing. Just look at ongoing struggles against biases in housing, employment, and law enforcement. In 2024, bias will persist as an inherent feature of most generative AI models… because we’re too lazy to fix the physical world. 4. Tech companies buy clean/synthetic data 2023 was the year of AI. This is an exciting time for many people… and a scary one for others. Ironically, the companies that are likely stressing out most about AI right now are the ones creating it. That’s because as AI digests and reproduces content, it is ruining every single platform with a mountain of nonsense. It is poisoning Spotify, YouTube, Google, and Facebook. Over time, it will get harder to train new AIs… as the quality of the data used will be less/heavily influenced by millions of AI-generated pieces of content. One might argue that the best way out is to identify AI data and leave it out of training sets, but that’s famously difficult. No, the only way out is to produce and sell 100% certified non-contaminated data sets. This industry-wide need will lead to the creation of a new type of company, from which social media platforms will buy training data sets to train their algorithm. And trust me, they will be expensive. They will be all the more expensive because I believe they will have the added benefit of being commercially viable to avoid the avalanche of copyright/bias lawsuits that are about to befall our tech overlords. The Zucks, Musks, and Spiegels of this world will be forced to invest to bring back trust to their platform, without which they are doomed. Adobe was the 1st to launch a “commercially safe” model. They won’t be the last. In 2024, it will be a good time to start a “Synthetic Data” company. 5. AI anchors become a waiting-room staple There are a lot of TVs not in homes today — 219m TVs total in the U.S., even after a decade of cord-cutting — and those TVs show content, which costs money to produce and license. They show CNN in airports, 80s sitcoms re-reruns in waiting rooms, cheap cooking shows in cheap hotels… the list goes on. In short, there exists a subspace dimension of streaming services watched by, from what I can tell, no one, where ads play in between TV shows and movies that don’t really exist in any culturally meaningful way, like the streaming video equivalent of two cameras pointing at each other. And that is where AI-generated content will launch initially. We’re not yet ready (in 2024 at least) for Generative Artificial Intelligence to create entire personalized movies — which, by the way, already exists and is called TikTok. We are, however, ready for the dystopian nightmare that is AI news. An AI start-up, aptly named “Channel 1”, is promising a new news network powered entirely by AI-generated hosts. You can watch the demo here. While dystopian, it will probably work and become the norm; it’s cheap to produce, doesn’t require much input, and boomers in the waiting room won’t know the difference. Hollywood (and content as a whole) is a dying breed, except for AAA content. My personal theory is that this type of visual netherworld will eventually swallow every streaming service that isn’t Netflix, Amazon Prime, and maybe Apple TV and Disney+. In 2024, the news will be AI-generated, and the person telling it to you will be fake. What that will do to fake news, only time will tell. I’d wager it won’t be good. 6. Apple pulls a privacy spin on AI Over the past decade, Apple has lauded itself as a stalwart defender of its customers’ privacy. It is one of the many reasons it has become not only the most valuable company in the world but also the most admired. The company is no doubt seeing all the frenzy going on around AI today and thinking they could leverage that trust to kneecap the market, just as they did to the advertising market two years ago. In 2024, Apple will release a new and improved Siri, as well as AI-first hardware, which will immediately hurt its competitors. They’ll do it by advertising end-to-end encryption, on-device processing, minimal data collection, user consent and control… and a seamless integration into its current ecosystem. Sure, they don’t have the computing and tech capabilities today… but when has that ever stopped them? 7. Calls of AI-led job losses are exaggerated Most people seem to think that AIs will replace jobs en masse. Why wouldn’t it, since it can do the exact same tasks a human can, sometimes better? But the authors of a recent paper titled “Reports of AI ending human labour may be greatly exaggerated”, seem to think otherwise. The paper explores the effects of AI-enabled technologies on jobs and wages in 16 European countries. It employs data from Eurostat’s Labour Force Survey and uses two proxies to measure potential AI-enabled automation: the AI Occupational Impact (“which links advances in specific applications of AI to abilities required for each occupation”) and a measure of “exposure” to AI. Intriguingly, the study finds that occupations more exposed to AI technologies actually see an increase in employment share. Specifically, a 25-percentile increase in AI exposure correlates with a 2.6% to 4.3% rise in sector-occupation employment share. This finding contradicts the popular belief that AI predominantly replaces human labor. Instead, it suggests that AI may complement or even boost employment in certain sectors. Though the study has a handful of issues (it doesn’t include the “ChatGPT years,” for one), I believe its core conclusion is solid. When Excel came out, we didn’t see less accountants. We saw more as they were able to tackle more complex, ever-evolving financial structures. In 2024, we will freak out about AI taking jobs… but these claims will be greatly exaggerated. 8. Spotify creates AI music In April 2023, the music industry was rocked by a seismic shift when a synthetic song falsely attributed to Drake and The Weeknd went viral. This event marked a turning point, exposing the potential for AI to imitate popular artists. Lawyers have already jumped to action, but too late. The cat is out of the bag. Soon, armies of algorithms will devour Indie bands’ content to learn from them and help companies pump out better, more commercially successful songs. I’d put my money on Spotify to be the first out the gate. They’ve said they aren’t even considering banning AI-generated music… because they want to benefit from it. Spotify has managed to reduce the world’s entire audio experience to one app. In doing so, it has acquired a mountain of data: what demographics listen to what songs, what gets searched, paused, favorited, skipped, shuffled, in what context… All in all, more than 100 billion data points are created every day on the platform. No artist, recording company or news aggregator can compete with this amount of raw information. Spotify knows exactly what everyone’s taste is and will be able to create and propose perfectly calibrated songs without having to pay artists. In 2024, this data will be used to create decent artificially generated music, created not through human ingenuity, but through algorithms. 9. Bad actors use AI to meddle in global democracy In a world where AI is becoming deeply integrated into everyday life, its influence inevitably extends to global elections. Right on time, too: 2024 is a record year for elections around the world. With elections in 50 countries, more than 2 billion voters will head to the polls in countries including the United States, India, Mexico, and South Africa. Bad actors will be paying attention to many of these elections. In 2024, AI systems will be used to try and manipulate electoral outcomes in various countries. AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation campaigns will proliferate and threaten the very fabric of global democracy. That will lead to a series of international incidents and culminate in an effort to create better rules to control the technology. It’s going to be a fun year for political journalists. 10. Studios create AI-first games that never end Have you ever wanted to play a game where NPCs adapted perfectly to your in-game behavior? A game that adapted to real life? To your mood? In 2024, a new paradigm will become possible as studios leverage AI to reinvent gaming’s nature. Ready for a world salad? Here’s what this new gaming paradigm will look like. Procedural content generation will ensure limitless environments and challenges, while dynamic storytelling will adapt to player choices to create unique narrative arcs. Generative agents powered by large language models will create incredibly lifelike companions, turbo-charging games with NPCs capable of passing the Touring test. Adaptive difficulty and player behavior learning will tailor difficulty and content to individual preferences, enhancing engagement. Incorporation of real-world data will continually refresh the game’s relevance. Community-driven content will allow for an ever-expanding universe, and cross-platform experiences will interconnect different games. Ultimately, autonomous AI could independently evolve games, introducing new features and fixes, heralding an era where games continuously grow and change, providing infinite exploration and entertainment possibilities. Now, say that in one breath. Happy gaming. 11. AI hangover hurts companies As many of this article’s entries highlight, we’ve reached peak AI. This is particularly true in the corporate world; millions of projects have been launched in 2023, in offices the world over. Companies have moved at breakneck speed to capitalize on the hype. This leads to two problems for 2024. First, many companies are in “POC purgatory”: projects are getting stuck in the Proof Of Concept phase and failing to scale because everyone abandons the hard work once external marketing is done. If you remember the NFT hype (whatever happened to Nike, Adidas, McDonalds… NFTs?), you know exactly what I mean. This is a risk for many players, as the ones who are not able/willing to do the hard work of integrating AI into the processes will be left in the dust. Secondly, AI decelerationists are emerging in many positions of power — a healthy sign of the corporate world’s immune system kicking in. They want to move a lot slower than they have been up until now for safety reasons. Those actors, though I respect them, will get eaten alive by less ethical companies while they have smart and reasoned discussions throughout 2024. In 2024, AI slows down… a little. 12. We talk more about AI’s environmental cost As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, its energy use, notably by major cloud computing providers, will significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. This is something we’re trying to reduce, not increase. As this problem becomes more known, consumers will begin to urge companies to optimize AI’s energy efficiency. Governments, meanwhile, will develop better policies and support sustainable AI development. Companies will fight back at first (obviously), but one might hope that their many talks of sustainability are more than just greenwashing. In 2024, Green AI will become the talk of the town. Technology tends to hold a dark mirror to society, reflecting both what’s great and evil about its makers. Though a lot of the above predictions are dystopian, it’s important to remember that technology is often value-neutral. It’s what we decide to do with it day in and day out that defines how it affects us. Our influence may be as small as sending a disapproving message to a corporation on social media or as big as voting a politician out of office if they prioritize corporation over people. We're bad at prioritization because we spread efforts uniformly rather than embracing non-uniformity. This leads to wasted time and missed opportunities. The Almighty Power of the Few This idea stemmed from a trip to a friend’s house on a cold January morning back when I was still living in Toronto. I came across a passage by Steve Jobs that got my mind buzzing: “People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.” I sat staring at those words trying to really digest them, when my friend’s 6-year-old son came running into the room... “Scott, Scott! Wanna see me count to 100?” My initial gut reaction was irritation at having my deep contemplation interrupted and fear that I wouldn’t get another quiet moment all morning. But suddenly it hit me— I should focus on what really matters. I eagerly smiled, “I’d LOVE to see you count! Show me!” I could tell my enthusiasm made his day. He counted proudly all the way to 100. It was pure magic and reminded me that some of life’s most glorious moments require little effort. The seeds for today’s article were planted in that moment. I couldn’t shake the lingering question: How do you determine what to focus on and what to say no to? It’s funny how you can read as much as you want, but when you experience the insight first hand, in your own life - it imprints on your mind in a fascinating way. I went home later that afternoon with a burning drive to study the world’s greatest creative geniuses to uncover their secrets. What hidden laws of the universe did they tap into to achieve such monumental success? HOW do they know what really requires your focus vs. what is wasting your time (and your life). Over the following months, I discovered a fascinating pattern that traces back over 100 years. This pattern is a powerful tool you can apply to optimize EVERY area of life and work. The Almighty Power of the Few In the early 1900s, Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto stumbled upon a peculiar trend... He noticed that 80% of Italy’s land belonged to just 20% of the population. He found similar skewed patterns with wealth distribution—a wealthy few always rise to the top. This trend was quickly observed in other domains: 80% of pea plants came from 20% of pea pods 80% of sales came from 20% of clients 80% of errors came from 20% of bugs in software programs 80% of decisions are made in 20% of meeting times The implications were clear... Results don’t come evenly spread—they come in chunks—massive chunks. The majority of the effects come from a tiny slice of the causes. Pareto’s Principle: The 80/20 Rule The pattern Pareto spotted became known as the Pareto Principle, or more commonly, the 80/20 Rule: 80% of results come from 20% of causes. Of course, the ratio doesn’t have to be strict 80/20 across every case—it can be 70/30 or even 90/10—the core relationship remains the same... The majority of outcomes are produced by the vital few inputs. Let’s look at a classic example... If you make a ranked list of all your Instagram friends based on the number of likes and comments when you post, you’ll find a very skewed pattern. Your top 10 or 20 closest friends will generate 80%+ of all engagement on your posts, while the other few hundred hardly engage at all. A few hyper-engaged friends drive the majority of results. These types of insanely skewed, “long-tailed” distributions with power law properties are EVERYWHERE. The implications of this are profound... Effort is Grossly Unequal to Results If results stem from very few vital causes, two critical insights emerge: You should devote the bulk of your time/resources to the vital few high-impact items. Go where the “results rich” hang out. It takes tremendous patience and persistence because it can be a long journey to find that pocket of high-impact causes. Many novice content creators/bloggers/writers/podcasters/influencers get demotivated when they spend hundreds of hours producing content, but get little traction for months. Then suddenly, one post goes viral and brings in more traffic than all previous posts combined! Rather than see this as luck or randomness, it reflects the Pareto principle’s “long-tail” effect—results come in concentrated chunks. This pattern appears in all creative domains: 20% of customers drive 80%+ of Apple’s iPhone sales 20% of bugs cause 80%+ of software crashes 20% of marketing campaigns drive 80%+ of leads The choice is evident—go where the results rich hangout. But this isn’t always intuitive... For example, I recently helped my friend strategize how to grow his channel. YouTube He was creating 2 detailed videos per week and struggling to gain any traction after months of effort. I studied his data and noticed one shorter, simpler video was massively outperforming the others, generating 80% of his total channel views. We determined he should shift his focus to creating more of that specific, high-performing content. By doubling down on what worked, his views skyrocketed 10X in three months! This story isn’t unique. The most successful YouTubers, bloggers, and entrepreneurs all heavily leverage the Pareto principle... They aren’t continuously trying new things. They double, triple, and quadruple down on their few vital areas generating the best results. Impact Blockers It would make sense to wonder why we don’t naturally optimize for these high-output tasks. Well, we’re only human and we fall into traps. Two tendency traps, in particular, that hamper 80/20 progress - stubbornness and fear. Stubbornness convinces us that even after trying something 1000 times with little results, maybe attempt #1001 will prove the breakthrough. So we persist in wasting energy banging our heads against the same approach because it feels safe and familiar. Fear also sabotages doing the vital work accounting for 80% of our goals. We clearly see different strategies would create exponentially bigger results. But those superior paths intimidate feeling outside our comfort zones. So we settle for incremental gains from easier tactics, afraid to level up. Both stubbornness and fear blind us from honestly assessing what 20% of work truly moves the needles that matter most. We avoid staring down the fact that much of our busyness is simply rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, not fundamentally shifting outcomes. When Inputs Don’t Match Outputs Now you may be thinking... Does this mean all the effort I put in is pointless if it doesn’t produce a visible, immediate result? Not at all! This principle doesn’t imply wasted effort—it demonstrates that input effort doesn’t linearly map to output results. There are many invisible benefits gained from sustained effort that don’t immediately generate measurable gains like money or recognition. Here are a few examples: Knowledge and Skill Development Learning complex material heavily taxes your mental abilities at first even though you don’t have visible skills to show for it. Like muscle memory, knowledge, and skill grow slowly through sustained practice. Increasing Luck Surface Area Effort over many months lowers the activation energy needed to catalyze a breakthrough. You can’t get lucky if you don’t sustain the effort to place yourself in the opportunity’s way. Stoking Motivation and Momentum Small daily progress triggers vital neurochemicals to sustain motivation. Progress momentum snowballs over time until you cross an impact threshold. In short, it takes tremendous patience and grit to find and penetrate that 20% “impact zone”. Sustained effort doesn’t ensure an immediate breakthrough, but it prepares the soil for the seeds of opportunity. This brings us to an important question... When Do I Pivot vs Persevere? Let’s say you identified writing as a creative strength and have been writing consistently with no monetary results for a year. At what point do you determine writing isn't a high-impact activity for you and pivot to something else? Or perhaps the type of content you’re writing on isn’t a niche that’s really growing quickly. When do you throw in the towel? This is tricky. Premature pivoting can rob you of potential hidden long-term gains whereas persevering down an unfruitful path breeds frustration (and will at times, lead to a Sunk Cost Fallacy). Here is a litmus test I use with entrepreneurs I’m advising to assess if an area has high-impact for them: potential Am I energized by the ACTIVITY itself or just the expected RESULT it will bring? Writing brings me great joy regardless of external measures of success. The process energizes me. If monetary rewards never come, I’d still benefit from the challenge, flow, and sense of progress it provides. However, I despise manually inputting spreadsheet data. Even if it brought great rewards, I'd dread that activity. So, assess if your effort stems from intrinsic enjoyment or purely extrinsic motivations. Sustained effort requires deep engagement in the process. Sustained effort + feedback loops + execution of learnings are required to uncover these high-impact opportunities. Additionally, you should constantly be running small experiments to validate your direction. See if you can monetize your writing in simple ways like freelancing, paid guest posts, or affiliate commissions. Micro-wins sustain motivation even if you haven't had the big breakthrough yet. So in summary: Deeply examine if the ACTIVITY brings intrinsic rewards regardless of the external RESULT it produces. Run small experiments to get empirical validation that confirms you’re on a promising track. You’re going to need to stick it out to get to those big breaks. They rarely come early. Micro-wins stoke motivation while also gathering data to support perseverance. Now that we covered WHEN to persevere, let’s examine WHERE to devote focus... 80/20 Prioritization The Pareto principle isn’t just a descriptive model explaining cause and effect skews—it’s also a prescriptive tool to optimize how we spend time and resources. Track quantitative data to benchmark performance. Identify your 20% power inputs across categories: What % of sales come from top 20% customers? - Customers: What's the split of revenue per product? - Products: Which pages or posts generate most traffic? - Web Pages: Which app features drive engagement? - Features: Who are your top 20% email contacts or callers? - Emails/Calls: Get granular with metrics to surface concentration patterns. The 20% will vary per business - data reveals where yours hide. Here’s an example of how to apply a simple 3-step process to achieve 80/20 prioritization: The example will be re. website traffic sources, but also understand this framework and exercise can be applied to anything in your personal or professional life. Website Traffic Sources The 80/20 principle states 80% of traffic comes from 20% of sources. Let's optimize productivity for traffic: one site's Step 1: Measure To Find Vital 20% Breakdown traffic sources and tally % of total visits per source: Google and Email drive 70% of total traffic - the vital 20% sources. Step 2: Rank Sources By Traffic Prioritize sources by traffic %, highest at top: Google Search - 40% Email - 30% Social Media - 20% Direct - 10% Step 3: Proportion Traffic Building Effort Spend time improving sources aligned to traffic ranking: 40% on SEO to boost Google rankings 30% on optimizing Email captures 20% on Social strategy 10% on Direct channels This example optimizes website productivity. But the - substitute "Sales Revenue", "App Engagement" etc to focus your vital 20% inputs. framework can guide other business functions Obsess over site visitors, customers and activities generating the most impact.  Say no to 'equal attention fallacy'. 80/20 prioritization allows you to maximize outcome impact from your limited input effort. Make the vital few your obsessive focus. Apply 80/20 Analysis To Business & Life Now you've seen how 80/20 prioritization works - go run this analysis on your business and also your life. In business, dig into data and metrics to find: Your 20% power customers Your 20% high-sales products Your 20% most engaged users Your 20% traffic-driving marketing channels In life, tally and rank to uncover: Your 20% activities generating 80% of joy Your 20% friends/family providing 80% of support Your 20% habits driving 80% of health outcomes Find your vital 20% across ALL categories. Those are your priorities for ruthless focus. Whether growing a business or living a rewarding life, 80/20 analysis spots high-impact areas for optimization. Stop spreading yourself thin trying to make everything uniform. Embrace non-uniformity like nature does. Create your vital few game changers in business and life realms. When you match effort to impact, the magic happens. Work with natural efficiency patterns rather than against them. So go analyze now. Discover and create your vital 20% and transform your future.
