The TechBeat: A Deep Dive on Digital Identity: Why You Need to Check Out Genies Traits Framework (2/1/2024)

What if your avatar in the Genies Ecosystem encoded not only your visual representation but also who you are – your personality, quirks, and all? The Traits Framework at Genies is our approach to bringing multi-layered depth and dynamism to your digital identity: depicting not just what you look like, but also describing what your personality is like. Why do we want to do this? Because we think your online persona should grow and change just like you do in real life. It's all about making the digital world more personal and responsive to who you are. There’s nowhere else where you can be part of an ecosystem that not only comes with amazing high-fidelity avatars but also a high-fidelity description of the inner self and personality of someone in the digital world. We describe a little bit of this in our previous , but we’d like to dive deeper into our methodology so you can understand how we’ve designed our Traits Framework and how it describes your digital avatar’s inner self. It's like giving your digital self its own unique flavor. blog post The Origins of Our Traits Framework We had two initial requirements for our Traits Framework that our product team set out as goals It must be comprehensive enough to describe a person relatively accurately but also uniquely. It must be simple & straightforward enough for developers to build innovative custom experiences based on your unique Trait profile. Based on these two requirements, we knew we had to bring in experts to do proper discovery work in building out the foundation of Traits. Therefore, we brought in a team of psychologists to work directly with our product team in building the foundation of our innovative framework. The psychologists helped build a clinical and scientific foundation for our framework and helped audit our creative process to ensure rigor in design. The Game Designer helped provide a developer perspective in architecting this framework and is now developing flagship examples that will make it straightforward for a new genre of personality-based Experiences to be built by anyone building within the Genies Ecosystem. We first worked with the psychologists to pull inspiration and research from other personality systems (Jungian Archetypes, the 7 Chakra System, 5 elements in Chinese medicine, and the 9 Enneagram Personality Types), but in parallel, we also looked to innovate in creating our own structure that would work specifically for our ecosystem where we’re able to have a bit of creative leeway to make personality profiles much more fun and engaging especially as we need to pair them with Experiences. Eventually, our focus narrowed to combining the 7 Chakras System with a gaming approach of multi-layered Traits (i.e., FIFA’s DEF or “Defensive” stat is actually a composition of multiple sub-traits each with their own values), forming the bedrock for the current Traits Framework. Clinical judgment from psychologists and qualitative research methods helped us to distill each of the 7 Chakras into 7 categories, each with three descriptive Traits that uniquely describe a different facet of that respective category. We then worked with the psychologists to generate a list of 21 Traits in total (3 Traits per category, 7 categories) making sure that we don’t generate so many Traits that it’s impossible for developers to build against, but making sure we have enough variety in Traits such that every individual can eventually build up a unique Trait DNA profile. As seen in the graphic above, these 21 Traits can also be beautifully grouped by “Mind”, “Gut”, and “Heart” type Traits where Mind are the more intellectual Traits, Gut Traits are the instinctive Traits, and Heart Traits are the emotional Traits. We’ve also color-coded each category based on the chakra system to give each personality type more expression and something for both users and developers to hold on to. As we started to leverage this framework to create custom personality-tailored experiences, our Game Designer gave us valuable feedback to simplify the system as much as possible to make the development experience as easy for devs as possible in the near term. Thus, we then worked to focus on 7 Traits to start off with - one from each category that the psychologists felt epitomized each category the best and was most accessible to users. We are not removing the remaining 14 Traits; eventually, we will want to layer in the two additional Traits within each category as we expand our Framework to create better fidelity. These are the final starting 7 Traits that we ended up with along with their illustrative Trait stones that can be gained by users within the Genies Party ecosystem. This personality Trait dimension presents a unique opportunity for users to learn about themselves from spiritual, psychological, somatic, and material perspectives. It’s an invitation to reflect on who you are, who you want to be, and to see aspects of yourself reflected in the Genies ecosystem. This is not the end though! As we build out the Genies Party ecosystem, there will not only be these Foundational 21 personality Traits but also many other Traits added that will gradually create more fidelity as more complex Traits grow from these Foundational Traits. Some of these you can start to experience in our ! personality quiz Additionally, we are looking to expand and test additional Traits like Physical Traits, which are useful for games within the Genies Party ecosystem as developers may find these Traits easier to understand. The first physical Traits that you will be able to gain for your avatar in Genies Party are “Strength”, “Stamina”, and “Speed.” How Will a Genies Party User See These Traits? As a user builds out their Trait profile in Genies Party, they will be able to collect and build on the Trait stones that correspond to their personality, with their most prominent Traits shown closer to their Avatar. There’s no “best” Trait value or combination for users, you are your own unique person and every profile will be a relatively unique combination of scores for each Trait. It’s like a Trait DNA that’s created for each user and constantly evolving based on your actions within Genies Party. Your Trait profile will be developed through what you say and do in Genies Party. Every conversation and every experience could shape your profile based on your behavior. It’s also fun seeing how your Trait profile could evolve and change over time, maybe even to characteristics you wouldn’t have expected! Don’t worry, if you don’t like your Trait profile, you can always reset your Traits and start over just as you would be able to completely change up your avatar appearance. Because this Trait profile is a result of your actions taken in the digital world, it’ll truly become a horoscope of your personality. Through Genies Party, we’d also capture insights about your inner self that you may not have been able to realize through any other platform, allowing you to compare your true self to friends and Creators. “Am I more similar to my friend John or Claire?” “Would I be compatible with Timothee Chalamet?” Finally, the personalized experiences brought to life by your Traits in Genies Party are set to redefine avatar-based gaming. They unlock a new realm of customized games that not only enhance how you can socialize your identity but also add a whole new tailored-to-you dimension of multiplayer interactions. We’ll touch on this in the next section along with some challenges of balance that we’ve thought of between Traits. It’s important to note that although the creation of this Framework is rooted in empirical and scientific work, our aim is to still make it fun with somewhat mystical/metaphysical leanings, rather than a more standard personality profile measure like the Myers-Briggs or the Big Five personality Traits. How Will Custom Experiences Be Built Against These Traits? Devs should generally not be using Traits to modify the difficulty of a game. Our recommendation for types of ways 3rd party devs can develop against Traits are as such: - Through cosmetic changes in avatar, environment, and VFX, devs can provide unique Trait-based experiences that don’t directly impact game mechanics. This rewards players with a sense of achievement without disrupting the game flow. Cosmetic - Through narrative changes in game flow, story, or progression, a user’s Traits can change the way NPCs interact or how the game progresses in story. Narrative - Through specific Trait values, a user may be given a shortcut through a game experience. Shortcuts/Paths If devs have created multiple archetypes of characters in their game, Traits can be used to assign an archetype to that player. Archetypes - - Things are the smart interoperable 3D objects of the Genies Ecosystem. Traits can be attached to Things developers create, adding another depth and dynamism to not just avatars, but also the objects that you carry around. Things For example, if users have a high Calm Trait in a Tamagotchi-type game, they may be more likely to find calmer pets to raise. Similarly, if a user picks a calmer pet to raise within that same game, their Calm Trait value may increase. Another example is if in a racing game, a user comes in with a specific Trait, they may get 3 race bonuses to pick from based on their specific Trait, whereas someone coming in with a different Trait may be selecting from 3 different race bonuses. Cosmetically, you may notice that Caring Trait users may have a pink heart-particle aura and Ambitious Trait users may have glowing red exhausts. We do not want users to use Traits for gating or power level purposes within their games to avoid balance issues. It’s also important not to only have direct player competition within games based on Traits to not have to contend with “which Trait is better” type of questions for each game. If you have concerns about being assigned a Trait profile that doesn't resonate with you, we have a thoughtful solution: Things x Traits. Envision this: each item your avatar equips carries specific Traits. This allows you the flexibility to customize your Trait profile to suit various experiences, ensuring that each interaction can be shaped by your choices and the items you choose to equip, giving you the power to own your gaming experience. We’ll touch on our innovative Things Framework and the intricacies of that system another time. How do Developers Access Traits in Our Developer Kit? We've integrated an API into our devkit scripting, allowing developers to access Trait values ranging from -100 to 100. While the exact number of a Trait isn't directly shown, this range simplifies the application of Traits in-game logic. For instance, a developer can use a formula like `if(max(calm, 0) * RNG > 50) success! Reading Traits: Else failure to apply the positive aspect of the calm Trait in a random number generator (RNG) check. This approach simplifies complex calculations, making the development process more efficient. Our API allows developers to adjust Traits in terms of Large, Medium, and Small increments, either positively or negatively. For example, a period of low actions per minute (APM) with successful outcomes might prompt a Positive Medium adjustment to the Calm Trait. Writing Traits: Conversely, a high APM with few successes could lead to a Negative Medium adjustment. We're also exploring a 'batching' API for more granular games, allowing developers to accumulate Trait changes and send them in batched API calls. This ensures smoother and more efficient Trait management in our devkit. Some altcoins rose 1,000% or more so far this year. The entire crypto market cap has doubled. At this rate, you may only have a little more time to turn $100 into $1 million with cryptocurrency. In January 2023, Billy the Neighbor ditched his trading career for his old day job but he’ll be back after bitcoin’s price hits a new all-time high. Last year, Aunt Sally and Uncle Morton pushed off their retirement “until the stock market recovers,” but they’ll be back, too, once their financial advisor suggests a 1% allocation to bitcoin because “it’s safe now.” It’s dawning on them You’d think these circumstances would prompt our financial leaders to reevaluate their skepticism of crypto. No such luck. In testimony to Congress, JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon said the government should close it down. She said he “learned his lesson.” The US government launched more lawsuits against crypto companies and exchanges. World leaders and conspiracy theorists of all stripes still poo-poo the notion that cryptocurrency can do anything valuable, but they don’t mean it. It’s a coping mechanism. They know this technology is unstoppable. Even the International Monetary Fund begrudgingly admits this, though not in those words. Did you read its report on cryptocurrency? In that report, the IMF said the world’s governments need to “effectively mitigate the risks posed by these assets while also harnessing the potential benefits of technological innovation.” In other words, the IMF—the epitome of the legacy financial system, the nexus for global financial engagement, and the largest forum for nations to coordinate financial interventions—admits what we already know: The world’s governments can’t keep crypto from growing. Good grief Cryptocurrency is money for the people, not the elites. With cryptocurrency, choose what money to use, not the government. we As such, you can understand their disdain. Put yourself in their shoes! You engineered a whole financial system that works better than any other. You already know everything you need to know to manage it properly. You conquered crisis after crisis. You gave people stable, functional monetary systems. How could anything useful possibly come from any approach other than your own? Our financial authorities have not yet come to terms with the root of the problem: Their system can’t give people the lifestyles that they want. They assume that as long as their system exists, it will take care of you. Just look at the aforementioned IMF report. That report doesn’t say anything about your needs. It’s all about needs. their They have a job to do and they can't understand why you don't appreciate them for it. They will, in time. They know they’ve lost the battle. They’ve only just started to grieve. The grieving process takes a while. It goes through five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Let them go through all five stages. Denial Ten years ago, crypto was a funny little concept. Easy to deny its potential. “It’s useless except for blockchain,” they said. Then smart contracts came along and they said “it’s useless except for blockchain and swapping assets.” Then ICOs came along and they said “it’s useless except for blockchain, swapping assets, and raising money.” Then they said “it’s useless except for blockchain, swapping assets, raising money, and running stablecoins.” How long until they say cryptocurrencies are useless except for blockchain, asset swaps, fundraising, stablecoins, CBDCs, gaming platforms, tokenized real-world assets, monetized ownership rights, global data storage and distribution platforms, and massive, open pools of capital that anybody can tap into for whatever purposes they want at any time? Some experts say cryptocurrency is too complicated to succeed. They might be overlooking how much time and effort goes into the legacy financial system. Layers of complex and expensive regulations. Bureaucracy and oversight. Treaties and machinations. Legal burdens and administrative costs — all hidden from the customer and packaged into spreads, service fees, commissions, and government budgets (somebody needs to pay for courts, lawyers, regulators, and their staff). Is it so hard to believe that we can replace that complexity with computer protocols? Anger and bargaining Cryptocurrency promises to deliver the same results as the legacy financial system with less complexity and none of the hidden costs. So, you can understand why the financial elites want to bring the technology to heel. They see the fraud and flagrant rejection of the US order. They see people throwing billions of dollars into magic internet money instead of corporations and government bonds. Why wouldn’t that piss them off? One Senator even promised to raise an anti-crypto army. The crypto community sees them as financial warmongers. Enemies. Persecutors. Do you know what I see? Angry people trying to bargain their way through a peaceful crisis. “They’re all frauds, they’re destroying people’s lives! If we put them in jail and regulate them away, we’ll be safe.” “You guys can gamble on cryptocurrency, but you can’t deduct your losses.” “Stake and trade all you want as long as you KYC and pay taxes.” “If you change the CEO’s picture on the Binance website, pay us $4 billion, and let us see your books, we’ll make all of these charges go away.” “You can have your spot ETF, but only because the courts say so. Just remember, this is a manipulated market and you’ll lose money.” Depression and acceptance come after El Salvador sells its bitcoin at the top of the next bull market OR when crypto delivers an experience that’s better than the legacy financial system (whichever comes first.) Empathize, don’t hate We like to think of our leaders and institutions as stoic, thoughtful, and intentional. In reality, they’re human. Like all of us, they experience the emotions that come with being human. Crypto promises to render their system obsolete. The technology isn’t very good yet, but a growing number of people put time and money into systems built on this technology rather than theirs. In three out of every four years, the value of this technology grows faster than the value of their technology. It’s innovating much faster and attracting more developers and engineers with each passing day. This is the situation our financial leaders find themselves in. They’re doomed. Time heals Give our leaders the space and time to sort out their emotions and come to terms with the world they’ll have to live in. Many of them share our concern about the welfare of people who worry they will never reach their financial hopes and dreams. They simply see crypto as an expensive, slow, clunky technology full of criminals, hostile entities, and buggy, complicated protocols. To them, the legacy system is better. Fair enough. As they work through their feelings, they will say bad things about crypto and maybe about you, too. Take their words to heart and reflect on the substance of what they’re saying, not the hatred with which they deliver it. Some of them see some social or political advantage in fighting us. They’re using us for their own selfish aims. Open the conversation anyway. Many will not like what you say. Some will listen. In any event, there’s no point in arguing. Mockers don’t listen to rebukes. Leave the fighting for lobbyists, lawyers, and legislators. Keep building, investing, contributing, and learning. Some think this opens us up to regulatory capture or more chokepoints. The financial elites want us to fail, and they’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen. Fear not. The Crypto Market’s Up Again. The Grief Cycle Continues

If you're unfamiliar with the languages of Solidity and Yul or lack a passion for the specifics of EVM assembly, then this may not be the rabbit hole you're looking for. Question In a , when transferring Ether to another contract, is there a potential risk of gas griefing from not handling the return data? Solidity contract Transferring Ether A Solidity function definition must contain the keyword to be able to accept an Ether value in the invoking call. payable The breaking changes introduced in version 0.6 included introducing the optional and functions as default message handlers.
The function, when present, is given priority over the function for handling a call containing a value without message data. (See Appendix A for sample code, ASM and breakdown) Gas griefing An avenue of attack where the goal is not to provide direct profit for the attacker but instead to cause an inconvenience to the victim. Greedily consuming sufficient gas to either prevent correct execution on return or simply to exorbitantly increase transaction costs can achieve griefing. Oversized return data When the size of the return data is unknown (as it is with the previous Yul inline example), then the entire return data is copied to memory even though the assignment is not being used (copying to memory costs gas). If the opcode forwards all the available gas, there is the opportunity for a malevolent recipient to dynamically create return data large enough to consume all the forwarded gas. call call When you are only performing a value transfer with a generous gas allocation, you may not have expected it to cost an obscene amount of gas, nor might you have expected enough gas spending to cause an out-of-gas exception. Causing inconvenience is the purpose of the griefing attack. Solidity contract - default functions The Solidity language specification explicitly forbids return values from the default functions of and . A griefing attack using return data from the default function is simply not possible, assuming their contract was implemented in Solidity. receive fallback Vyper contract - default function An alternative smart contract language is Vyper, which provides a similar feature set but aims at being less permissive than Solidity to prevent risky implementations. Vyper has a default function that will be invoked (as the name implies) when the contract lacks a matching named function to the function selector bytes of the calldata. This function is always named and must be annotated with @public. It cannot have arguments and cannot return anything. default The restriction on forbidding any return value is identical to the Solidity default functions, and as with Solidity, the attacker is unable to implement their griefing contract in Vyper. Yul contract As the restrictions on the default function(s) having no return data are part of the language specification rather than the EVM specification, what happens if we implement the attack contract at a lower level of abstraction? (See Appendix B for sample code, asm and breakdown) When implementing the entire contract in Yul, a default function that returns data can be successfully implemented. Although writing a contract using only Yul dials up the technical requirements for the attacker, it does mean that gas griefing from non-handling the return data for value transfers that use call is possible. Return data buffer The Byzantium hardfork (2017) included EIP-211, which introduced both the opcodes and the return data buffer to deal with return data of unknown size. Compiler implementors are advised to reserve a zero-length area for return data if the size of the return data is unknown before the call and then use RETURNDATACOPY in conjunction with RETURNDATASIZE to actually retrieve the data. (See Appendix A for sample code, asm and breakdown) When compiling the Solidity with inline Yul into the intermediate representation (IR), we can see it contains the and opcodes. As the does not define the return data size, the generated IR code must deal with that unknown return data size. Another important detail from EIP-211: Note that the EVM implementation needs to keep the return data until the next call or the return from the current call. Since this resource was already paid for as part of the memory of the callee, it should not be a problem. Implementations may either choose to keep the full memory of the callee alive until the next call or copy only the return data to a special memory area. Put simply, when an attacker is attempting to grief a victim using a malicious contract that bloats the return data, the caller can do nothing to prevent the gas from being consumed by the malicious contract by storing its return data in the return data buffer. Mitigation The only way to properly mitigate the risk of interacting with a malicious contract would be to strictly follow a process of only interacting with trusted contracts or ones that can be independently verified as sound (e.g. checking that the verified source code on Etherscan will behave appropriately). Summary When transferring Ether from a victim contract to a griefer contract using a Yul , if the griefer was written in Solidity or Vyper, there is no risk of griefing from non-handling of return data, as their default functions are forbidden from using the return data buffer.  However, if written in Yul, then data could be returned by the default handler. call The griefing attack is the consumption of an unreasonable amount of the forwarded gas by returning oversized data, causing inconvenience to the victim. Although the victim can explicitly set the return data size to zero, avoiding the generation of the memory copying code in the victim's contract, it cannot prevent the griefer's gas consumption from storing their data in the return data buffer. Rather than a unique problem with handling return data, this issue seems more like a generic risk when yielding the control flow to another contract. When outside the dominion of your control, you are powerless to restrict what the other contract does; instead, you are able to restrict only the amount of computation by limiting the gas forwarded in the call.
