Globalping - A Community-Powered Global Network Testing Platform - Is Officially Live!

When building a new product, you suddenly face countless challenges and decisions. Sadly, there's no magic formula for making the right choices, whether you're just starting out or are a seasoned entrepreneur. Having walked this path several times as a team, we understand the excitement and worry it can bring. We are a small team that recently launched , a global network testing platform. This project is special because it is our second attempt after a startup with a similar product idea didn't reach the desired outcome. With Globalping, we're taking a different approach to reach our goals and vision for the product. Globalping In this blog post, I'll share insights and learnings from our experiences with the startup and how they influence our approach at Globalping. In particular, I'll write about why we built a JavaScript-based open-source platform and how these choices have transformed the project. Reflect and Learn: Growing From Past Experiences Let's go back a few years to when we founded a startup called PerfOps. The idea was to build a B2B SaaS platform for optimizing Internet-based applications. It used RUM (Real User Monitoring) data to gather performance metrics on CDN providers and enable Multi-CDN load-balancing functionality. As a bonus, it also allowed users to run network measurement requests like traceroute and dig from different locations worldwide. Like many startups, we needed funding. Luck was on our side as we received VC backing, allowing us to build a team and rent hundreds of VMs (virtual machines) to build a global network for on-demand network testing. As a result, we could develop new technologies to analyze billions of RUM data points and utilize them in DNS-based load-balancing in real time. While this venture didn't work out as envisioned, the experience gained was invaluable and shapes Globalping's path today. Some takeaways: : VC investment urged us to change the pace and priorities of our work. As we focused on meeting metrics to secure the next round of funding and shifted our priorities from small businesses and single users to larger enterprises, we felt the joy and enthusiasm for our idea fade. Pressure dampens passion : Developing the product to meet investor expectations often didn't match our vision of building what our users needed. Focusing on what the users want and need is important as long as you understand the industry and market, something that our investors had no experience with and pushed to improve different metrics and priorities that were incompatible. Building for users . While useful in large amounts, it quickly became apparent that most Real User Monitoring (RUM) data were problematic and not ideal for debugging networking issues. You could never know whether the problem lay with the CDN or the client running the test. Plus, RUM data is not reproducible; once a test has run, there's no way to re-run it from the same location to assess the impact of your changes. RUM data is unreliable . As a VC-backed company, we had to keep all the code and data under wraps and hidden from the public. Our users could never verify the authenticity and accuracy of the data shown to them. Moreover, anyone could claim that we manually changed the performance rankings in favor of high-paying customers without being able to prove the opposite. Black boxes don't help But even after the unfortunate fate of the startup, we still saw the potential and need for accurate, open, and reliable network testing and performance monitoring. And so, Globalping was born, a second chance to do things differently and draw from experiences to create a better service for our users and ourselves. Now, let us share with you how we do that. Embracing Open-Source & Putting Users First We believe it was a natural progression to make Globalping an open-source project. For once, we’re already familiar with the concept. We've been running for about 10 years, a free, open-source, multi-CDN service that serves more than 230 billion monthly requests. jsDelivr So we already knew the pros and cons of open source, what to do, and what to avoid – the more we thought about it, the more it made sense that Globalping must be open source. The main reasons to make Globalping open source were: : Most people who contribute to the project also use it. So they help build their own tool and get the desired features by contributing their skills or simply giving feedback. Also, Globalping grows with its community because instead of renting VMs to build the test network, we rely on the community to host Globalping probes in their homes and offices. Leveraging the community : Building a community doesn't happen overnight. Luckily, we already have a great community supporting our other project, jsDelivr. Many existing users and supporters can join Globalping because of the technical overlap: jsDelivr provides globally distributed infrastructure, and Globalping is a way to monitor, test, debug, and compare such global systems. Utilizing jsDelivr : With the pressure of growth and profit reduced, we can now focus on building a platform that is accessible to all. The platform is free, with generous limits, offering the same features to everyone, whether they're a huge enterprise or a student just learning how the Internet works. Building for everyone : Open source makes our work transparent and visible to all. Anyone can review our code and logic, be it our probes or core API. This helps us validate our security and privacy claims and reassure users that we're fair and not selling ratings or using biased algorithms to calculate CDN performance. Also, any person or company who finds an issue with the code or functionality can submit a patch, requesting to add their update or fix. Being transparent Naturally, open source also has its challenges. Product development requires developers, designers, marketers, and developer relations experts. And while we have the support of tech experts from our community, we still work with a core team that's compensated for their work. Instead of relying on VC funding, we're now building partnerships with like-minded companies and seeking support from GitHub sponsors, whose donations keep us running. Choosing JavaScript to Develop Globalping The next important decision was the technology we wanted to build Globalping with. We confidently picked JavaScript, relying on our experience in operating large-scale, real-time JavaScript apps. The benefits of our familiarity with the language have already paid off, allowing us to build new features faster and find and fix bugs more easily than with less familiar languages. In addition, among app and web developers worldwide made it an obvious choice for us. The language has a rich and robust ecosystem of tools, libraries, and packages that align with our development goals. By using other open-source projects, we can leverage the knowledge and efforts of the community, avoiding reinventing the wheel. JavaScript's popularity Since JavaScript itself has a vast community, there are many potential contributors to Globalping. And because JavaScript code is mostly straightforward to read, it's easier for newcomers to navigate and understand the source code. As a result, developers can contribute faster, which keeps motivation up and drives the project forward. Ultimately, while our core team continuously works on Globalping, to the platform. We're happy to announce that our new open-source project, Globalping, is officially launched and available to everybody. Test global latency, ping from any corner of the globe, troubleshoot routing issues, and even investigate censorship worldwide – . all completely free The Globalping Platform Globalping is a robust platform with a vast network of hundreds (and soon thousands!) of probes running in different countries and cities worldwide. While most of these probes are Docker containers, we also offer (mini ARM computers) to our valued donors and occasionally give them away for free. hardware probes The probes are hosted by our users in their homes, offices, and servers they control. Once a probe is online, it connects to the Globalping API, updates itself, and waits for events – all without user input. Rest assured that the probes don't allow incoming connections or open ports. They also don't require a dedicated IP address, so NAT users can still contribute. However, to prevent abuse, we have a limit of one probe per public IP. Thanks to this global network of probes, anyone can make measurement requests via the Globalping API. For example, to run a traceroute from ten European locations, the platform considers all online probes registered in Europe, issues the event to run a local traceroute to ten random probes, and reports the results in real-time. How Can You Use Globalping? If you're a developer looking to create tailored integrations and tools, the is for you. For everyone else, we are working on a range of official integrations that focus on simplicity and usability – some of which are already available. Let's take a closer look at them! Despite all the hype around the current Bitcoin bull run and crypto in general, the market reality is this:  the global crypto trading market is in its infancy. Otherwise, someone would have solved it and the crypto trading landscape would not be in its infancy today.  I believe developing a two-sided liquidity marketplace is a key step to solving professional crypto traders’ ails -- and in creating a unified global trading market. Actually , a digital asset trading network, is reportedly working on developing such a two-sided marketplace, according to its CEO, Haohan Xu. Apifiny But first, it’s helpful to contextualize two-sided marketplaces at-large. The Value of Two-sided Marketplaces Two-sided marketplaces are not new. They are proven ways to bring together buyers and sellers who would otherwise be unable to connect, creating new revenue streams for sellers and new capabilities for buyers. Google’s advertising service, , is a great example of how a two-sided marketplace created a new source of value for small advertisers (buyers) and website publishers (sellers) and helped accelerate the growth of a new business category. Google AdSense in ad revenue, helping drive new demand for ad inventory by making ad space available to legions of small advertisers (over ).  AdSense made it possible for websites of all sizes to monetize their audiences by easily selling ad space. Without a 2-sided marketplace, this phenomenal business would cease to exist. AdSense collected $146.92 billion in 2020 38.3 million websites so far in 2021 Lack of Liquidity is Keeping Institutional Traders on the Sidelines The dearth of global liquidity supply is limiting the growth of digital asset trading despite the growing demand for global liquidity from exchanges, asset issuers, and quant traders.  It bears repeating that today’s digital asset trading markets are highly fragmented with no single, global market. Institutional traders can only trade in local markets and, therefore, do not have access to deep, global liquidity and the best asset prices. Why? Today’s exchanges are disconnected, operating in isolation from each other. As a result, to achieve sufficient liquidity, traders must connect with multiple exchanges using different APIs, whose reliability varies widely and requires high development and maintenance costs. Moreover, without enough distributed IDCs to connect exchanges across the world, trading speed is too slow for professional traders. Traders also need to deposit large positions, and transferring those positions between exchanges is also slow and expensive. Finally, high withdrawal and transfer fees also force many traders to store their funds on centralized exchanges, which poses a huge security risk. The end result is today’s international trading systems lack enough liquidity and are too complicated, slow, and expensive. Key Benefits of a Two-sided Liquidity Marketplace But a two-sided, liquidity marketplace that connects the world’s exchanges to new, untapped liquidity sources, can solve these challenges. Just as advertisers can easily buy ad space, a 2-sided liquidity marketplace would enable exchanges and token issuers to easily purchase liquidity from scores of new market makers who can automatically sell liquidity. (A market maker is a financial institution that buys and sells assets on exchanges and other trading platforms and makes profits by optimizing its “bid-ask” spread, which is the difference between a buy (ask) and sell (bid) order). A two-sided marketplace would, in theory, enable legions of mid-sized market makers across the world to provide enough liquidity to catalyze the next big wave of trading growth. It would also set the stage for the globalization of crypto trading that seamlessly connects exchanges, market makers, professional traders and OTC desks into a unified, global marketplace. A two-sided liquidity platform would democratize access and benefit all players. Smaller market makers could participate without facing upfront capital or trading volume requirements. Fee rates would also be much lower with no accumulation, meaning the lowest fee rate would be in place at any one time. Exchanges would benefit from all the fresh liquidity that tens of thousands of new market makers provide across a much larger number of assets. This, in turn, benefits professional traders with superior price discovery, tighter spreads, higher fill rates and capital utilization, and faster trade execution. Faster execution will also help exchanges attract more professional traders, creating a virtuous cycle of market growth. New Market Makers “But wait, there’s more!” Sorry, I just love to poke fun at the disingenuous nature of that common infomercial refrain. In all seriousness, this kind of two-sided liquidity marketplace could also allow more professional traders to become market makers by automatically connecting them to exchanges and/or asset pairs that need liquidity. Expanding the scope of market making to new parties would fuel trading market growth even more. Such a marketplace could also empower exchanges and asset issuers to list their market making opportunities and their corresponding maker rewards. Professional traders could place funds into a market making account, allocate it to a participating digital asset exchange, and select their preferred trading pairs (such as BTC/USD). It may seem far-fetched to turn traders into market makers. But no less far-fetched than retail bank savings accounts fueling commercial loans. A well-designed two-sided marketplace with the right technology and enough connected exchanges would make it very doable. Global liquidity and the entire crypto trading ecosystem would take a big evolutionary step forward as a result.

Consumers are endowed with infinite choices and limitless knowledge throughout the customer journey, making them far more elusive for businesses to attract. How to Create the Negative Margin Effect in Flutter

1. What do you currently do and what’s your favorite part about it? I am leading a PR agency focused on startups. My favorite part is that it deals with companies that are a totally different beast from most other companies. We often take PR from 0 to 1, or from 1 to 100 as the startups do the same business-wise. Working with startups also means having access to the brilliant minds of founders, people who put all their skin in the game and want to make a big impact in their industries and the world. 2. How did you get started with your Tech Career? I was in a not-so techy corporate job when my future co-founder told me about the idea of starting an agency for startups. She was heading PR for a London startup, and was looking for someone with complementary skills. I had been working in sales and marketing. We combined her PR expertise and vision with my love for numbers, process, and management and that’s how it all got started in 2018. 3. If Utopia were a color what color do you think it’d be and why? Utopia is always a trap. We need something to aim for, but taking it too seriously will lead to dystopia. Red has proven that. Brown has also been a living dystopia. Black and white are much closer than you think. Green is an easy choice, we all want a normal future in which our ecosystem doesn’t collapse. But by shutting down nuclear, Germany has opened the doors to coal. I don’t think we can focus on just one color. 4. If everything about HackerNoon changed drastically, what is one detail you’d like to keep exactly the same?  OR What’s your favorite thing to do with HackerNoon and why? Community. You can feel HackerNoon’s community, something I can’t say about other writing ‘communities’. Also, its beautiful simplicity. There’s Reader, Writer. But also, the homepage lets you access tons of interesting content in one view. The focus is not on getting clicks, but giving value. In today’s world, how many ‘media outlets’ do that? 5. Tell us more about the things you write/make/manage/build! Write: Most of my writing is about startup PR. It’s an easy one when it comes to sales. It doesn’t matter how good a product is if you can’t sell it. When it comes to PR, something similar happens, obviously to a smaller degree but still. A lot of founders never take the time to understand even the basics of PR. That means they waste money with the wrong approach or wrong agency, and later on hate the discipline. My co-founder, my team and myself are on a mission to educate startup folks at the early stage so they don’t have this handicap. Manage: I manage the day to day, the ‘ops’ of the agency. We are remote-first, have people in places like Germany, Spain, UK, Lithuania, Ukraine and South Africa and use all the same tools startups use. Although we never could aim to have startup scalability we try to keep things as startupy as possible. Build: I would definitely say expanding Black Unicorn PR is my main building site at the moment. But watch this space for more projects! 6. What’s your favorite thing about the internet? Globalization has been a great equalizer. From Korea to Argentina, from Germany to Vietnam, any country can trade and specialize in what they want. But the world wasn’t truly equalized until the internet came about. It allows people to specialize also when it comes to non-manufacturing jobs, including programming, work remotely for foreign firms regardless of location, and learn lessons discovered halfway across the planet. You thought I was going to say cat videos! 7. It’s an apocalypse of ‘walking dead’ proportions and you can only own a singular piece of technology, what would it be? This is like choosing your expertise at the start of an RPG video game. I usually go for stealthy, agile types, not the brute force. I think I would go for something granting some form of agility or stealth, like Spiderman’s spider web technology or Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. Of course, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have a handy weapon with me at all times. 8. What is your least favorite thing about the internet? I was hoping this wouldn’t be asked. There are terrible things that happen on the internet. Some of them are too scary to think about. One thing I’m not a fan of lately is that it can lead to a kind of  tribalism in which two sides fight each other over things they would never do in real life. In general, people can be very susceptible, and as we all know, bad actors can exploit this for political or economic purposes. 9. If you were given $10 million to invest in something today what would you invest in and why? A lot of the biggest problems right now seem to revolve around energy. This is especially an issue in Europe. And not just clean energy. Americans already surprised at the prices of energy in Europe will be in for a treat now that the world seems to be de-globalizing and suppliers becoming less connected. In the short-term, we need to avoid more bloodshed in Ukraine, where it’s raining bombs on cities and civilians. So I’d go for cheques to military tech and energy startups. 10. What’s something you’re currently learning or excited to learn? I’m on the non-techy side of tech. I’d love to understand the technology, programming, software side better. I’m not saying a programming language necessarily, but more an overview or the lay of the land. And then we’ll see! 11. Would you rather travel 10 years into the past or 10 years into the future? Give reasons for your answer. If you travel into the past you can try to fix things or take better decisions, and you know what to expect. But you could create terrible butterfly effects. If you travel into the future you will probably see new technologies and be able to access new opportunities… if the world hasn’t burned down. I think we should do both, but in our minds, and use that to guide the present.

Metaverse is a virtual universe where everyone can interact and transact with each other and digital 3D objects. In your opinion, is the metaverse inevitable, or is it just another passing trending tech topic that'll lose hype? Metaverses have been around for a while. Remember World of Warcraft? That’s also a metaverse with an established economy where characters can interact and transact with each other. The current metaverse boom is only confirming the demand and letting us walk into the future of virtual worlds. We already can see various digital galleries opening in and . Such big names as and also joined the space with their virtual concerts. Metaverse technology enables all fans to attend a concert of their favourite celebrity without a need to have a big pocket to afford flight tickets, accommodation, and the concert ticket. It helps celebrities to engage with their fans more frequently and even have a virtual fan meeting. Even though we’re living in a fast pace globalising society, it might be still time-consuming to fly to another place for an event or a meeting. There are quite a lot, to be honest. Metaverse allows people to build a project in the replicated virtual world that is an absolute 3D copy of the real city where you can decide and even let people vote on the new architectural projects. You can also build your dream home project in the metaverse to decide on its styles and design. What can people build in the metaverse that we can't build on the Internet, or in virtual reality today? What limitations of our current technology does the metaverse free us from? As mentioned already, metaverses free us from physics, rules and regulations, granting complete freedom to digital creators and enabling digital economies. We can’t just build a tower in the middle of Manhattan. However, we can do that in the metaverse. It can be a fun project of a digital creator or can be a serious project designed by an architect to evaluate whether it will fit in well in a real life. It can even be a competition to win a tender for building a tower in a certain place (e.g. Manhattan) where people can vote and decide on who is winning this tender. We also can’t host music festivals or concerts for number of people larger than a venue’s capacity. A venue in metaverse can always host more people than a real-life venue. One of my friends is founder of pop-up digital art gallery in New York City. He is looking to expand internationally, however, it’s quite challenging to understand what would be the best location to choose. He though of hosting these pop-up exhibitions in the metaverse if different countries he is trying to choose from. If a certain location will gather a big crowd, they can host an actual event there in the real life. Metaverse in this case is a cost-efficient way to test out the market for your “product” and that is extremely important for small businesses. How are the metaverse and blockchain related? Can we build a metaverse without blockchain technology? Metaverse is a virtual world, it can exist on Blockchain (Decentraland, The Sandbox) or can exist without it (World of Warcraft). Blockchain technology adds data protection, security, and transparency to metaverse empowering its economies and ensuring the system resilience. It always depends on the level of decentralization that certain blockchain has but generally speaking, this technology adds enormous value to metaverses. Answering the question, yes, you can build a metaverse without blockchain, but would you? How quickly do you think the metaverse will be developed? How much can we expect metaverse tech to grow in the next 5 to 10 years? Even though the metaverse concept has been around for a while, I would consider the actual establishment of the market right now. We can already expect metaverses to become quite a common thing in 5 years. When we’re talking about graphics, it’s harder for me to predict, as it’s also related to the hardware where I have quite a limited knowledge. However, looking at the modern games and how the graphics has changed from the moment I played last time is quite impressive. Mass adoption of metaverses will surely boost developments in the hardware section and we might also see more connectors between real-world and metaverses through AR technology. What is your hope for the metaverse? Do you have any worries or does the concept pose any threats? Being a tech person to my bones, I certainly hope (I would even say I’m sure) that metaverses will continue developing fast bridging new technologies and enabling more possibilities.
