What’s up, folks? here. For this week’s Tech Company News Brief, let’s walk through the biggest stories of the year. Hope y’all had a great start to your 2024! Through the past year, tech–both big and small–has been subject to mass layoffs and company closures since the beginning of the year as the industry reeled from the Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank closings. Eventually, the bill also came due for some overhiring during the Pandemic era as certain industries thought they could weather even the biggest storms. Huge companies like , , , Zoom, and reduced their workforce by a significant portion, , while other tech companies had it much worse. Smaller projects, like Jack Dorsey’s p2p payment company, Verse, ceased operations this year, but even some big players, such as former crypto index fund Bitwise, found themselves closing up shop too. According to , 2023 saw a staggering total of 261,847 tech employees laid off in 2023 at the time of this writing. Ouch. Microsoft Google Amazon Meta some in the tens of thousands Layoffs.fyi Nevertheless, tech carries on. In fact, this “ trimming fats” strategy seemed to be working for most giants, as collectively the S&P 500 went up almost 24% in 2023, a record high! This year was a bit quiet on the mergers and acquisitions front, but massive purchases still happened with some epic fumbles along the way. Notably, chipmaker Broadcom’s $69 billion acquisition of VMware went through this year, while on the flip side, Adobe’s planned $20 billion acquisition of Figma fell through just as the year was wrapping up. Perhaps the most publicized and scrutinized merger that closed this year was Microsoft’s big purchase of Activision Blizzard. The finalized merger went through for close to $69 billion after being approved by the UK’s CMA in October after being blocked earlier in the year. The gaming industry has yet to feel the effects of Microsoft’s purchase, but wheels have already been set into motion as now-former CEO Bobby Kotick and a few of his crew have already announced that they are leaving the company in the new year. Tech journalists and gaming enthusiasts have been weary of Microsoft's deal since its announcement in early 2022, as it seems like the industry is only getting sectioned off to a further degree the more that these mergers go on. I really don’t think there’s any other way to put it, which is ironic, given that I learned about Bitcoin way, way earlier than most of the people I knew. In fact, I might have played a role in introducing to as many of my friends as I could more than a decade ago. Bitcoin But here’s the thing: I never viewed Bitcoin more than what it actually was at the time (we’re talking around the 2010s): An anonymous medium to trade for goods and services on the deep web. Anyway, the FTX debacle and the recent of Changpeng “CZ” Zhao from Binance are just the latest in a string of what I can best describe as a series of events that strengthen my belief that crypto is simply a money-making endeavor, and nothing more. Appendix: Prompt for Claim Extraction 5 System Overview Following our user study, we implemented the NEWSSENSE framework as a browser plugin, which adds augmentations to news articles encountered on the web. Figure 1 shows the final appearance of the browser plugin. Code for system and plugin can be accessed at github.com/jmilbauer/NewsSense, and a demo video can be viewed at youtu.be/2D5LYbsQJak. This section provides a description of the natural language processing system which powers NEWSSENSE. Figure 2 illustrates the four general steps of the pipeline: Collection, Selection, Filtering, and Linking. 5.1 Article Collection First, we must collect a cluster of news articles that are all about the same news event. Our implementation scrapes data from Google News Stories, a website that collects many articles about the same events across news venues. After collecting article URLs via Google News Stories, we then collect the content of each article. A typical story contains over 50 articles. 5.2 Claim Selection The next phase of the pipeline is to select the claims within each article cluster. We initially assumed a 1-to-1 mapping between sentences and claims, but quickly found that news articles often contain complex multi-clause sentences, which are not suitable for natural language inference. To address this issue, we few-shot prompting to generate a list of claims from sentences using a large language model (LLM). In our experiments, prompt exemplars are drawn from the PROPSEGMENT dataset (Chen et al., 2022), and the LLM used is OpenAI text-davinci-003. Full prompt details are provided in Appendix A. We also note that the authors of PROPSEGMENT report that T5-Large performs reasonably well on the task, suggesting the possibility for further pipeline improvements. 5.3 Claim Filtering Articles often contain over 30 sentences. For a cluster of 50 articles, a pairwise comparison of the full cartesian product of sentences has O((NL) 2 ), which is in practice well over 1,000,000 comparisons. Performing this level of computation at scale, even if we are pre-computing results for each article cluster, is simply not feasible. To address this, we perform an initial filtering step with leverages the fact that the vast majority of claims across any two articles are unrelated. We consider two approaches for claim filtering: Embedding Similarity filtering (ES) and Lexical Overlap filtering (LeO). For Embedding Similarity filtering, we encode each claim in each article using a Transformerbased sentence encoder. Then, for each claim we retain only the k most similar other claims for comparison. In our implementation, we use the Sentence Transformers (Reimers and Gurevych, 2019) all-Mini-LM-L6-v2. For Lexical Overlap filtering, we compare each sentence only with sentences that have overlapping words, as these sentences are likely to discuss similar topics. In our implementation, we process claims by first remove stopwords, then stemming using the NLTK (Loper and Bird, 2002) implementation of the Porter Stemmer (Porter, 1980), and compute overlap scores using the Jaccard Index. We evaluated each filtering method on the MNLI (Williams et al., 2017) validation data, treating pairs of randomly sampled sentences as negative examples, and labeled “entailment" and “contradiction" sentence pairs as positive examples. For ES, we set a threshold of 0.3 cosine similarity; for LeO, we set a threshold of 0.1 overlap. We note that all-Mini-LM-L6-v2 included MNLI in its training data. We include a summary of the results of these experiments in Table 1, which indicates that the ES method outperforms the LeO method. Appendix: Prompt for Claim Extraction 4 Pilot Study To gather feedback on the proposed NEWSSENSE interface and provide insights for the actual implementation, we conducted a pilot user study using a NewsReader mockup built with Figma [10]. This section describes the design and results of the study. 4.1 Study Design We aim to collect feedback on NEWSSENSE’s basic functionality, interface design, and content quality. The participants were assigned a task of reading a news article using NEWSSENSE and answering a set of questions. The questions focused on the content of the news, how and where the user located information, and their level of trust in the information. These questions aimed to assess the basic functionality of NEWSSENSE in helping readers understand news comprehensively, to motivate further development of the system. 4.2 Results Following the pilot user study with over 10 users, we identified several key findings. First, all users found NEWSSENSE to be useful in locating important information and verifying the credibility of news articles, aligning with our initial goal. The user-friendly interface of NEWSSENSE was wellreceived, though participants suggested enhancing interactivity to set it apart from other solutions. For instance, displaying real-time feedback like “NewsSense is analyzing the article" during loading. Regarding content quality, some users found NEWSSENSE limited and suggested increased labeling or categorization within articles. One user noted Two highlighted sentences per page are insufficient for in-depth analysis." User preferences varied for article summarization, with some wanting more key points and others preferring brevity. Contradicting previous feedback, one user preferred “Summarizing key points only, rather than selecting sentences with unclear relevance." Addressing this, NEWSSENSE could allow customization, letting users choose key point count and filter supporting/- contradicting data. 4.3 Study Takeaways We found that users liked how NewsSense highlighted important sentences from an article. We realized that the claims which are consistent across multiple articles (ie, those which are supported at least once) are likely to be the most important aspects to a given story. NEWSSENSE could inform readers when there are key claims from across the article cluster missing from the article they are reading. We also found that the bias labels for news venues could be overwhelming, and including them ran counter to our aim of reference-free verification; we eliminated these labels. Users also appreciated how highlighted sentences functioned as summaries. Consequently we enhance the visibility of text highlights and further emphasize the alignment or contradiction of specific source by making the External Evidence cards colored accordingly. Table 2 shows the performance for setups where GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 take different roles. As can be seen, when GPT-3.5 acts as the generator, and GPT-4 acts as the discriminator (G3.5-D4 for short), the performance (68.8) is better than single GPT-3.5 without negotiation (65.2), but worse than single GPT-4 without negotiation (69.5). In contrast, negotiation-based configurations with GPT-4 acting as the generator (G4-D3.5 and G4-D4) consistently outperforms standalone GPT-4 or GPT-3.5 models without negotiation. These results underscore the pivotal role that the generator plays in influencing the negotiation outcome. Furthermore, we observe G4- D3.5 can beat G4-D4. We attribute such advantage to the hypothesis that utilizing heterogeneous LLMs for distinct roles could optimize the negotiation’s performance. 5.2 Consensus Percentage Table 3 consensus percentage for different setups. As can be seen, when GPT-4 acts as the generator, the negotiation is more likely to reach a consensus, or reach a consensus in fewer turns. The explanation is intuitive: for the twitter task, we can see from table 1 that GPT-4 obtains better performances that GPT-3.5, which means the reasoning process for GPT-4 is more sensible than 3.5, making the decision of the former more likely to be agreed on. 5.3 Effect of the Reasoning Process In the negotiation process, LLMs are asked to articulate the reason process, a strategy akin to CoT(Wei et al., 2022b). We examine the importance for listing reasons in negotiation by removing the reasoning process and asking LLMs to only output decisions. Results are shown in Table 4. As can be seen, for the three setups, single GPT-3.5, where only GPT-3.5 is used without negotiation, single GPT-4, where only GPT-4 is used without negotiation, and GPT-3.5+GPT-4 where negotiation is employed, performances all degrade when the reasoning process is removed. But interestingly, we see a greater degrade (-2.3) for the negotiation than the single model setup (-1.2 for single-GPT-3.5 and -0.9 for single-GPT-4). Cyber Attacks and National Security Threats Adversarial cyber campaigns can cumulatively produce strategic loss for the United States and its allies, and they increasingly put the development goals of emerging economies at risk. Cyber threats continue to intensify in both frequency and severity, with increased risks of escalatory or uncontrolled cyber activity. State actor and non-state actors, including criminals, terrorists, and violent extremists, have tremendous incentives to invest in and exploit digital technologies to threaten our and other’s national interests. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) presents the broadest, most active, and most persistent cyber threat to government and private sector networks in the United States. Beijing has mounted cyber espionage operations against government, commercial, and civil society actors and has increased its ability to carry out destructive and disruptive cyberattacks. The PRC is capable of launching cyberattacks that could disrupt oil and gas pipelines, rail systems, and other critical infrastructure services within the United States or its allies and partners. Attempts to compromise critical infrastructure by PRC actors are designed in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict—either to either prevent the United States from being able to project power into Asia, or to affect our decision-making during a crisis by instigating societal chaos inside the United States. Both state-sponsored activity and that of PRC-linked actors are part of the PRC cyber approach. A persistent cyber threat, the Russian government is refining its cyber espionage, cyberattack, influence, and information manipulation capabilities to threaten other states and to weaken U.S. alliances and partnerships. Russia continues to provide safe haven to transnational cybercriminal actors, such as disruptive ransomware gangs. Russia’s cyberattacks in support of its 2022 unprovoked invasion of Ukraine were intended to destabilize the Ukrainian state and military and have resulted in spillover effects onto civilian critical infrastructure in other European countries. As the war continues, Russian government and Russian government-aligned cyber actors have targeted Ukraine with cyber operations against the public and private sectors, information manipulation and online influence operations, and attempts to divert and censor Ukrainians’ access to the Internet. Russia appears particularly focused on improving its ability to target critical infrastructure in the United States to demonstrate its ability to damage infrastructure during a crisis. The governments of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea (DPRK) and Iran have both increased the scale of their malicious cyber activities. Facing multiple rounds of international sanctions, the DPRK evades controls through cybercrime and the theft of cryptocurrencies. DPRK hackers continue to gather intelligence on military technology targets as well as academia and think tanks. In addition, the DPRK dispatches thousands of skilled IT workers around the world to generate fraudulent revenue that ultimately contributes to its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs despite U.S. and UN sanctions. Iran’s growing expertise and willingness to conduct cyber operations threaten the security of networks and data globally. Iran’s opportunistic approach to cyberattacks makes critical infrastructure owners in the United States susceptible to being targeted by Iranian actors, particularly when Tehran believes that it must demonstrate it can push back against the United States in other domains. Iranian actors have engaged in a wide range of intelligence-gathering operations around the world, and—in the wake of Hamas’ atrocities on October 7, 2023, and Israel’s military operations in Gaza—have conducted wiper, website takedown, hack and leak operations, espionage, and online information manipulations campaigns. Iranian actors have also conducted malicious activity against operational technology devices used in the water sector and other industries. Cyber criminals and criminal syndicates operating in cyberspace now represent a specific threat to the economic and national security of countries around the world. Cybercrime and online fraud cause significant harm to economic development, with small- to medium-sized enterprises and financial service providers especially at risk. According to one estimate, the global cost of cybercrime is estimated to top $23 trillion in 2027. [3] Ransomware incidents have disrupted critical functions, services, and businesses, from energy pipelines and food companies to schools and hospitals. Ransomware attacks against the healthcare industry can undercut the level of care provided to patients and others under care. Total economic losses from ransomware attacks worldwide continue to climb, reaching into the billions of U.S. dollars annually. Ransomware groups often operate out of safe haven jurisdictions whose governments, often adversaries like Russia, do not cooperate with law enforcement and sometimes encourage, direct, sanction, or tolerate their activities. Terrorists’ and violent extremists’ use of digital technologies also represents a threat to the national security of the United States and its allies and partners. An evaluation of root domains of the most popular sources shows only a small overlap between Google and the alternative search engines (RQ1). Overall, we found an overlap of 27% to 28% between Google and the alternatives in German results, and in the US, the overlap ranges from 24% to 25%. There is a significantly higher overlap between the alternative search engines of about 63% to 70% in German results and 62% to 65% in US results. This may be explained by all three alternative search engines using Bing's index at least in part. However, our findings show that Metager consistently has the highest overlap with Bing, going up to 78% and only overlapping as much as 64% with DuckDuckGo. The lower overlap of Google with the alternative search engines had already been shown in the studies of Agrawal et al. (2016) and Makhortykh et al. (2020). Our study provides further evidence for this. When looking at the uniqueness of sources across all German queries, we found that the search engines returned a similar total number of sources, ranging from 2,693 to 2,841. However, for the US queries, the variety in Google was noticeably higher, with over 4,000 total sources compared to around 3,500 of the alternatives. The most popular domain was Wikipedia, followed by sources we classified as News services (RQ2). This is likely exacerbated by selecting Google Trends as the source of our search queries, which usually includes queries related to popular news stories, sports, and celebrities. Still, it is consistent with previous studies' findings (Steiner et al., 2022) which already showed that Wikipedia and news made up the majority of search results. Furthermore, in our research, Wikipedia and news sources were the top domains across all results and the most frequent sources for each search engine individually. When comparing the result sets of the top 10 results from Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Metager, using 3,537 queries generated from Google Trends from Germany and the US, it is interesting to see that news sources are far more prevalent in German results, with social media being very infrequent. On the other hand, the US results had more social media websites. Interestingly, in the US results, YouTube was in the top 10 most popular domains in all search engines but Google. The same was the case for the top 50 domains in German results. This is unexpected because YouTube is a subsidiary of Google. However, this finding may be explained by the fact that we only collected organic search results, and Google might be using universal search results to display YouTube results. Another interesting difference is the greater preference of Wikipedia in Google in US results (1,892, 10,2% of all domains) compared to German results (658, 4% of all domains). Furthermore, the second and third most popular sources on Google are Instagram and Facebook for the US results, while they are not even in the top 10 of German Google sources. Finally, in terms of what is missing from Google in the US results, it is notable that Fox News is not found in the top 50 sources, while it is present in all of the alternatives. The concentration of sources and source diversity showed a tendency for only a few root domains to make up a large share of search results. The Gini Index values of 0.73 and 0.79 in Germany and the United States, respectively, are a clear indicator (RQ3). This is consistent with findings from previous studies (Höchstötter & Lewandowski, 2009) that showed that only a few top sources dominate the search results in search engines. Of course, our study is not without limitations. First, the selection of search queries is the most significant factor in compiling the data that was evaluated. Even though the number of queries is high and there is some diversity in the queries, the topics are almost always focused on news, celebrities, and sports, which inevitably leads to many news sources in the search results. A refined approach to selecting search queries would be appropriate for a more accurate evaluation of source diversity. For example, this could be achieved by focusing on socially controversial topics and choosing the queries accordingly. Further limitations arise in the evaluation of source types. The classification we used in this study is very broad. A more precise classification would help make statements about the actual kinds of sources and thus to determine even more precisely which preferences and biases exist in different search engines. For example, grouping sources according to seriousness and reliability could serve as an explanation for the selection of sources to be displayed in search results. Regarding the search results collected in this study, another limitation is that only organic search results were considered. We did not consider advertisements or universal search results, although these have a strong influence on what users see on the SERP. The relevance of the search results was also not considered. When looking at the uniqueness of sources across all German queries, we found that the search engines returned a similar total number of sources, ranging from 2,693 to 2,841. However, for the US queries, the variety in Google was noticeably higher, with over 4,000 total sources compared to around 3,500 of the alternatives. The most popular domain was Wikipedia, followed by sources we classified as News services (RQ2). This is likely exacerbated by selecting Google Trends as the source of our search queries, which usually includes queries related to popular news stories, sports, and celebrities. Still, it is consistent with previous studies' findings (Steiner et al., 2022) which already showed that Wikipedia and news made up the majority of search results. Furthermore, in our research, Wikipedia and news sources were the top domains across all results and the most frequent sources for each search engine individually. When comparing the result sets of the top 10 results from Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Metager, using 3,537 queries generated from Google Trends from Germany and the US, it is interesting to see that news sources are far more prevalent in German results, with social media being very infrequent. On the other hand, the US results had more social media websites. Interestingly, in the US results, YouTube was in the top 10 most popular domains in all search engines but Google. The same was the case for the top 50 domains in German results. This is unexpected because YouTube is a subsidiary of Google. However, this finding may be explained by the fact that we only collected organic search results, and Google might be using universal search results to display YouTube results. Another interesting difference is the greater preference of Wikipedia in Google in US results (1,892, 10,2% of all domains) compared to German results (658, 4% of all domains). Furthermore, the second and third most popular sources on Google are Instagram and Facebook for the US results, while they are not even in the top 10 of German Google sources. Finally, in terms of what is missing from Google in the US results, it is notable that Fox News is not found in the top 50 sources, while it is present in all of the alternatives. The concentration of sources and source diversity showed a tendency for only a few root domains to make up a large share of search results. The Gini Index values of 0.73 and 0.79 in Germany and the United States, respectively, are a clear indicator (RQ3). This is consistent with findings from previous studies (Höchstötter & Lewandowski, 2009) that showed that only a few top sources dominate the search results in search engines. Of course, our study is not without limitations. First, the selection of search queries is the most significant factor in compiling the data that was evaluated. Even though the number of queries is high and there is some diversity in the queries, the topics are almost always focused on news, celebrities, and sports, which inevitably leads to many news sources in the search results. A refined approach to selecting search queries would be appropriate for a more accurate evaluation of source diversity. For example, this could be achieved by focusing on socially controversial topics and choosing the queries accordingly. Further limitations arise in the evaluation of source types. The classification we used in this study is very broad. A more precise classification would help make statements about the actual kinds of sources and thus to determine even more precisely which preferences and biases exist in different search engines. For example, grouping sources according to seriousness and reliability could serve as an explanation for the selection of sources to be displayed in search results. Regarding the search results collected in this study, another limitation is that only organic search results were considered. We did not consider advertisements or universal search results, although these have a strong influence on what users see on the SERP. The relevance of the search results was also not considered.
