AWS Neptune goes GA, Microsoft Cosmos DB releases new features, the query language discussion heats up, TigerGraph announces free developer edition, building enterprise knowledge graphs in the real world with Zalando and Textkernel, and more. May has been another interesting month for the graph database world. How can data scientists use knowledge graphs? How, and why, can you publish JSON-LD, or write type-safe graph queries using Gremlin? And, what’s the connection between GDPR, metadata, semantics, IBM, and Hortonworks? Let’s start our tour and find out. Click on the images below to get to the stories. 1 It’s been long awaited, and now it’s generally available. How does AWS Neptune, this 2-in-1 new entry from Amazon, compare against other graph database solutions? How does it work, what is it good for, and will it “ ” the domain? Amazon 2. Azure Cosmos DB took the center stage at Microsoft Build to celebrate its 1st birthday. This multi-model database has just added an array of new features, including multi-master replication capability and an Asynchronous Java SDK to its already rich offering, and its lead architect, Rimma Nehme, shares more details. 3. We have stressed already how important graph guery languages are, and how fragmented the landscape is there. Neo4j has come forward with a proposal to unify Cypher, its own query language, with two more property graph query languages, PGQL and G-Core, from Oracle and LDBC. Interesting to see the rationale, the community’s reaction, and how it will play out. 4. Did we say, graph query language and community reaction? Here’s a recap of both: the community has mixed reactions, and TigerGraph, the latest entry in the graph database domain, decides to offer free developer edition, tries to build a community of its own. 5. It looks like the people involved in Gremlin, another alternative in graph query languages, keep working in the meanwhile. Kelvin Lawrence, one of the project’s main contributors, just published an update on his Practical Gremlin guide. 6. And to wrap up with query languages, here is a proposal on how, and why, to build type-safe graph queries on top of Gremlin, from the people in Celum. 7. The people in Thomson Reuters, on their part, met with senior data scientists to discuss how to encourage wider adoption of enterprise knowledge graphs. They discussed topics such as Natural Language Processing and AI, but by and large where they see the most value is connecting data silos. 8. Enterprise Knowledge Graphs are great and all, but how do you actually build one? Let’s hear it from the experts: Panos Alexopoulos from Textkernel and Katariina Kari from Zalando have over 20 years of combined experience in this. Before taking the stage to tell us all about it in Connected Data London, they share some of their experience here. 9. May was also GDPR month. It’s understandable that you’ve grown weary of that by now, but, promise, this is not about updating terms, or any of the usual discussion. It’s about how metadata and (graph-based) semantics can help repay the data governance gap that GDPR has shed light on. 10. Who is going to read your tech stories in the midst of this presidential election madness? That’s a legit question to ask. Diddy was able to steal the election show for a while. I felt bad writing a good story about the tech side of the whole Diddy arrest situation. The mainstream media was more about the number of lubricants than the platforms of presidential candidates, which was surreal. But, that’s the world we live in, like it or not. I mean, even if the aliens are to land out of the blue in November, we would be like: sorry, how about another time, we’re in the middle of something. So, what are we supposed to do? To write or not to write, is that the question? I don’t think so. Opt-Out Of Political Extremism With Creative Escapism I don’t know about you, but when I write my stories, I forget about all of my worries. If you can lose yourself to dance, then why shouldn’t you lose yourself in writing? Interesting things happen when you write. You lose the sense of time. You don’t listen to the news. Your phone is in “do not disturb” mode. What more could you possibly wish for? If you're not turned onto politics, politics will turn on you. -Ralph Nader I don’t buy this one, especially when it comes from the man who tipped the scales “in the 2000 presidential election in Florida, George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by 537 votes. Nader received 97,421 votes, which led to claims that he was responsible for Gore's defeat. Nader disputes that he helped Bush win. A 2003 study found that Nader's candidacy was a critical factor in Bush's victory. A 2004 study found that Nader voters had the profile of likely voters with a preference for Democratic candidates. Again, I don’t think so because I stuck to facts and numbers. Truth be told, writing turned into walking on eggshells for that particular story. It felt quite differently when I wrote about Lex Fridman’s Roman Empire podcast episode and Elon Musk’s Terminus plans for Mars. When the present sucks, you have two options, or it’s better to say - directions. You can go back, like I did, to remember how great Asimov’s “Foundation” great and relevant still is after all these years. Or, you can step into the future and write about AI. That one felt great, too. So, when someone asks you, who you are going to vote for or support, you can reply with a question: what are you going to write about next? When this political circus leaves our cyber-town, isn’t it better to be left with meaningful tech stories or pointless posts? Better to Vote for Startups than Political Clowns HackerNoon’s Startups of the Year 2024 Awards are just around the corner. Some of these startups can really shake the ground. What are we going to get if we “turn onto politics,” for real? Just another status quo, don’t you think? Everybody wants to rule the world (Tears for Fears), but very few want to change it in a good way, unselfishly and progressively. If you’re asking me, it’s better to be a part of something that has the potential to start-up than end-up the world as we currently don’t like to know it. I’m totally fine if someone says there’s a blurred line between a writer and an entertainer. If tech stories create a bubble to keep you away from any kind of politics-related trouble, I consider it to be a creative victory. So, write, don’t fight because there won’t be winners, only losers in 2025 who allowed themselves to be dragged into this election mess. The only genuinely effective way to change the collective consciousness of humans, is to work on ourselves as individuals, to separate ourselves from everything we recognise to be inherently harmful, and to inspire the same in others.

Inspired by HELM [1], we decompose the model evaluation into four key components: aspect, scenario, adaptation, and metric (Figure 4). An aspect refers to a specific evaluative dimension. Examples include image quality, originality, and bias. Evaluating multiple aspects allows us to capture diverse characteristics of generated images. We evaluate 12 aspects, listed in Table 1, through a combination of scenarios and metrics. Each aspect is defined by a scenario-metric pair. A scenario represents a specific use case and is represented by a set of instances, each consisting of a textual input and optionally a reference output image. We consider various scenarios reflecting different domains and tasks, such as descriptions of common objects (MS-COCO) and logo design (Logos). The complete list of scenarios is provided in Table 2. Adaptation is the specific procedure used to run a model, such as translating the instance input into a prompt and feeding it into the model. Adaptation strategies include zero-shot prompting, few-shot prompting, prompt engineering, and finetuning. We focus on zero-shot prompting. We also explore prompt engineering techniques, such as Promptist [28], which use language models to refine the inputs before feeding into the model. A metric quantifies the quality of image generations according to some standard. A metric can be human (e.g., humans rate the overall text-image alignment on a 1-5 scale) or automated (e.g., CLIPScore). We use both human and automated metrics to capture both subjective and objective assessments. The metrics are listed in Table 3. In the subsequent sections of the paper, we delve into the details of aspects (§3), scenarios (§4), metrics (§5), and models (§6), followed by the discussion of experimental results and findings in §7. HEIM’s Core Framework: A Comprehensive Approach to Text-to-Image Model Assessment

In a world driven ever deeper by digital personas, reputation became perhaps the highest denomination of currency. What if that notion were taken to an extreme? Imagine a society in which every action, every word, every interaction was tracked, recorded, and rated. Imagine a person's social worth defined by a score seen by everyone around them. This speculative essay on such a system leads us down the path of dystopian consequences in which a peer-to-peer reputation economy breaks the very fabric of humanity. In the process of flirting with conceptions of transparency, accountability, and social ranking, we are forced to confront, too, the darker side of reputation: its power to seclude, control, and dehumanize. Here is a story from a world where reputation isn't just the measure of success but a prison nobody escapes from.
