Our Predictions/Thoughts on the SaaS Marketing Industry in 2023 In many ways, this sector hasn’t changed much in the last decade, primarily focusing on SEO, digital ads, and social media marketing. But a couple of recent technologies are converging to massively disrupt how marketing is done online. Whatever you think of crypto and Web3, projects used communities to market their product and showed us the power that communities can have in accelerating growth. These communities, when done right, were at the heart of all successful Web 3 projects. Think of BAYC and other NFTs, Friends With Benefits, and similar DAOs as a couple key examples. Non-Web 3 projects have been watching, and while the tools are nascent, they will be a powerful mechanism to capture the people who love their project, as well as key influencers in their space, and incentivize them to engage the network effect. Additionally, AI is bringing all kinds of new ways to ease content creation, ensure a better user experience, and make sense of data and patterns that we are only beginning to understand. Successful digital marketing teams will be utilizing AI to ease the friction of gaining new customers, provide a better experience for existing customers, and to do new things that we haven’t even conceived of it. And these two technologies used together can be powerful indeed. What word defines the state of Digital Marketing in 2023? Calm (before the storm). I don’t think that most marketing teams - even the most sophisticated and innovative - can only have a fuzzy view of how this market will be transformed. Many are using tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney to do all sorts of things from creating content to drafting strategies and whatnot. But these are just raw tools at this point - when AI tools are integrated into the software we need and use when they are trained on relevant data, and when they advance further it is going to radically change how we work and operate on all planes - but digital marketing is for sure going to be hit pretty hard. And that’s not all. Anyone who has been doing digital marketing knows that it’s become pretty formulaic. SEM/SEO and search ads don’t have nearly the power they used to as targeting has become broader and restrictions have been put in place, not to mention the competition. Social media marketing has also become noisy and targeting broader after the pushback on privacy. Influencer marketing doesn’t have the power it used to as influencers have, well, lost their influence in many ways. It’s tough to stand out anymore. So looking at it from a distance, it really does appear like nothing is happening. But rest assured…it is. A year from now this will be an entirely different world. Why we decided to participate in HackerNoon's Startup of the Year awards I have been an avid reader and, sometimes, a contributor to Hackernoon for a number of years. I appreciate their approach. Almost two decades after Satoshi Nakamoto’s brilliant sketch of what a decentralized system should be and Vitalik’s improvement, decentralization still seems achievable only in theory. Satoshi would probably be beaming with doubts right now. L2s are centralizing decentralization, opportunists are posing as CEOs to create tokens and get rich, and fake friends are using chains not for their performance but because their clique rolls with it. And every day on Twitter, there's a debate about whether Zk rollups can save the world or if L2s are efficient, or if we need L3s, L4s, and many more layers—like lasagna. Sixteen years later, and we are forced to believe that it's still day one… Exclusivism Problem Being ‘right enough’ for discussions in Web3 conferences often means citing issues like UI/UX and low funding as reasons why crypto projects fail and struggle to appeal to the masses. We've forgotten that as far back as 2009, over 100 million people were actively using Facebook. Nobody cared about how the app looked. The appealing force was that it connected friends and family and allowed them to send and receive texts and pictures in real-time. The core value that brought those 100 million people together was connection. Since no other platform had offered such a scale of connectivity, Facebook—despite any design flaws—was (and still is) solving a problem far greater than design alone. Don't get me wrong, technology is evolving and users are having better experiences online so it's great to beat any experience they're having elsewhere if you want to get their attention. At the same time, nobody cares about using an app because the brand colour is sleek; all that matters is that it solves their problem and in this context, solves it better than a ‘Web 2’ alternative without boring anyone about the tech stack. So it's not UI/UX, Web3 has an exclusivity problem. It’s like that graduating class of ‘96 that tries to make you feel like you're in the wrong class, yet they’ve increased the barrier for you to join—provided you're fluent in their technical jargon and shit posting. If you asked them where they worked, they would say, “I work in Web3”. You'll never hear someone at Facebook say, “I work in Web 2”. Exclusivism was also the reason for NFT hype a few years ago. Web3 folks felt you can sustain a product off mere hype without anything substantial backing it. If you are in the blockchain/crypto/web3 space, you have undoubtedly been subjected to a litany of news regarding Bitcoin “Ordinals,” aka “Inscriptions,” aka “Bitcoin NFTs.” This is the latest rage to sweep the crypto world, and it’s shaping up to be a similar hype to what happened with Ethereum NFTs in the summer of 2021. What are Ordinals, and How Do They Work? “Regular” NFTs are typically produced through the use of a smart contract, similar to the creation of crypto tokens. This is why they were named "non-fungible" tokens, as they are generated in a similar manner - but aren’t used to spend; they aren’t fungible. The NFT smart contract outlines how to mint, trade, send, and any other transaction that might involve the NFTs contained within that contract. The Ethereum ecosystem started with ERC-720 and expanded with new specifications for various NFT types. Other blockchain networks followed suit, often adopting the Ethereum standard. Bitcoin ordinals, on the other hand, . For more information, check out the original Ordinals Handbook. In short, ordinals are generated through the "inscription" process, where units of Bitcoin (or "sats") are used. These sats, and their accompanying ordinal, will be recorded on the ledger and can be transferred together.
