I recently spoke with Nathan Leung, Co-Founder and Host of , an educational YouTube channel providing quick and easily digestible crypto information. Cryptonauts Prior to Cryptonauts, Nathan focused on the production side of Hollywood, working in film, TV, and on commercials for companies like Sprite, Pizza Hut, Foot Locker, and more. After being introduced to crypto in 2016, Nathan and his co-founders noticed that there was a lack of quality crypto educational videos on YouTube - from there, Cryptonauts was born. With over 3 million channel views and nearly 100k subscribers, Cryptonauts’ goal is to educate the world about the developments of Bitcoin, Ethereum, DeFi, and all things crypto and Web3 with quick and easily understood content. In our discussion, we explore Nathan's transition from filmmaker to crypto educator, the importance of blockchain education for widespread adoption, and his insights into the future prospects of the crypto industry. Can you please tell us a bit about yourself and your journey at Cryptonauts? So I started off as a filmmaker, working on the production side in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. I was blessed to have some of the best mentors in the world. One was a casting director for Superbowl commercials. The other is a director working with James Wan on many movies - with the next one being The Nun 2. They taught us everything about film and production, and we are grateful to have had a support system around us. People who believed in us. Around 2016, my friend introduced me to crypto by sending out a mass email. I was the only one who replied to it. We noticed that nobody was making good crypto content on YouTube. It was all TRASH, not even mids. So we decided to team up and use his skills as a director, and mine as an actor, to try and make an educational video. The first video hit 6,000 views out of nowhere… so we’re like “Alright… let’s make another one.” We then made the Proof of Work vs Proof of Stake video. Which blew up with 60,000 views. So we did one more. This time, it was even more epic. We spent 3 months researching, writing, and animating a 20-minute video on IOTA, and that one reached over 100k views. We were shocked and in disbelief. Clearly, there was an audience out there for educational, yet easily digestible crypto content. After the Iota video, we kept going and never really looked back. What’s the current state of awareness and education regarding blockchain technology, cryptocurrencies, and overall, Web3? In the last couple of years, I think the overall public sentiment towards crypto has been negative… naturally, due to the bear market. But a lot of this is attributed to a lack of education. There are so many shillers or pump and dumpers out there that are giving crypto a bad reputation. On the other side, you get retail investors who are only looking to make a quick buck without any regard for the technology. We try to avoid being associated with both of those groups because we are in it for the tech- I mean we strive to make better content for the tech. Okay, so why video? What’s the medium’s biggest strength when it comes to educating people? We chose video naturally because we already worked in Hollywood. From casting to commercials and post-production, we’ve done it all. The biggest strength in video is our ability to tell a story and use animations or analogies to explain technical concepts. You’ve only made a hundred videos in six years. What goes into making a Cryptonauts video? The topic and the research take the most time, as well as accurately depicting an analogy or metaphor. If we get anything wrong, out goes our credibility. After research, it goes to script writing, production, and post-production. During post, this is also where we draw the animation assets in Illustrator and put them into after effects to animate the drawn assets. After this is all done, we picture lock it and work on the audio, mastering the background music, color correction, and all that good stuff ;) The reason we put so much effort into each one is because we want these videos to live on our channel forever. Many of the best artists in the world will never be forgotten because of their albums. The Beatles, for instance, made classics. We want to tell web3 stories, attend events, and do explainer videos the best we can – so that we can say we are proud of our work. They can live on the channel as “classics”, and they will always have long-tail viewership. Why is blockchain education important for the widespread adoption of the technology? There are sooo many facets of web3 these days. Trading, NFTs, GameFi, writing smart contracts, mining. Each person finds their own avenue in the industry, and education needs to be there to invite people in. Without education, you can’t onboard the next billion users, nor have new people enter the space. Who knows, the next Vitalik might just be interning for us right now! What is one related subject that you think deserves more attention? Not necessarily crypto-related, but Financial Literacy. It’s not part of any education curriculum but is a critical skill to have if you want to be successful in life. The current system encourages debt and credit cards and a consumerist lifestyle. You see professional athletes from the NBA or NFL who make tens of millions of dollars… Plenty of money for a lifetime, but yet they still go broke. Why is this? Lol, just kidding. We don’t have any courses to sell. Education should be free. Where do you see this industry in the next five years? Particularly, in terms of general awareness and adoption. I see this industry continuing to grow. We’ve been in this industry for 7 years now, and everything has already grown way bigger than I would have ever imagined. It feels like yesterday when my dad told me “Bitcoin is not real money,” – this was back when the Bitcoin price was USD 800. Cut to today, you now see Bitcoin billboards in cities all around the world. Interest from the public continues to grow across the globe, especially in the younger generation. Crypto makes sense for young people because they’ve never experienced a world without the internet, so internet money is a no-brainer. On the other hand, we see the big institutions coming for their piece of the pie, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. Why do you feel blockchain technology and a strong crypto market are needed? As governments continue to print money and inflation rises, the average working person will always get poorer and poorer. Their 2% yearly salary increase can never catch up to the 7% inflation rate. This means that sooner or later, the wealth gap will continue to widen. For the first time in history, there is a decentralized, digital currency that lives on a public ledger. There is a deflationary supply and a maximum cap of 21 million bitcoin ever to exist. For the first time, people have a way out of the broken, oversaturated financial system. As long as inflation has no ceiling, the price of Bitcoin also has no ceiling. It’s not only because its value is becoming more valuable… It's also because the value of the dollar itself is devaluing. As you print more, more supply is in circulation. The more supply, the lower the value. If we could share this with more people around the globe, they can change their lives drastically and have the hope of a way out. I finally saw the much commented-about Netflix Documentary and was amazed by how he went on to scam so many women using the exact same strategy time and time again. As I always say, content marketing is a lot like romance so this article can be read as content marketing advice or as dating advice.😉 Make Your Customers Feel Special Simple as it sounds. Everyone loves to love and everyone wants to feel special, cared for, and thought about. Everyone loves the idea that they mean something to someone and as a brand, it is important to go the extra mile to make sure that every one of your customers—no matter how many—feels special. Some brands that I think do a really good job at this are , , and . If I were looking to date, these three would be top of my list because they’ve, in one way or the other, been able to make me believe that they genuinely care for ME and not just after my buck. Footlocker PayPal LinkedIn sends me coupons on my birthday and keeps track of exactly the kind of shoes I like to see. My browsing experience feels tailored to me and my interests. Footlocker is the caring partner that checks in, their choice of copy shows that they understand my issues and exactly where they come into the solution. Paypal I would describe as a great listener. Delivers recommendations based on my recent activity and searches. LinkedIn I don’t know about you but If I had just offloaded to a friend about needing to eat a specific type of food and they texted me the next day with restaurant recommendations for exactly that food, I would 100% fall in love with them. That’s a love language. Everything from their UX copy to Email marketing and notifications just screams concern, care, and a personalized experience. A personalized experience can only be achieved through active listening. Listening to your customers, their issues, their preferences, what they like, and what they don’t. That tells you what to say to them, when to say it, and how to say it in order to ensure that it is well received. Open Up/ Be Transparent The age-old way to make someone feel closer to you is to make them feel like they know you. Vulnerability is a driving force of connection. Transparency makes your brand real, relatable…human. It gives it a physical form, something measurable, something that’s worth attention. Because Simon was able to tell these women about his fake problems, he was able to draw them even closer into the story he was trying to sell by making them a part of it. His vulnerability made them feel special and made them feel like they were in this together. In the same way, Brand transparency is all about being open and honest when it comes to your products, your pricing, your values, and how you do business overall. It gives customers a view into what your company is all about and makes them a part of your journey. Be Consistent In the words of some wise woman somewhere, “ ” Don’t introduce me to a vibe you can’t maintain Inconsistency is unattractive—in people, and in brands. Content marketing is a journey, not a campaign and by design is supposed to be a continuous process. To make a customer fall in love with your brand (or you), you cannot afford to be hot today and cold tomorrow and then decide to be hot again the next week. The process of falling in love *I think is very similar to the process of building a habit. It doesn’t matter how well you perform on any individual day. Sustained effort is what makes the real difference. Consistency in presence and consistency in delivery. Half of being in love with someone or something is just (your brain) being used to them—being used to the fact that they’re always there. The human brain makes them a part of your personal story. That way you condition your customer’s mind to relate your brand with positive experiences or more simply put, the customer’s mind gets used to you and falls in love with you. In conclusion, a huge part of building consideration in the minds of customers (or lovers) is the commitment to the cause. She has said she always had a special interest in shoes, but her collection grew rapidly when she started to work at Footlocker. She said, “At some point, I had collected so many shoes that I realised I will never wear all of them. So I just started to cut them apart to create something new”. Her mutilative practise definitely makes sneakerheads cringe, but is closely followed by a sigh of relief when we see her stunning end product. The Brands Image After growing up in Reutlingen, Germany, the Kurdish designer moved to Berlin to continue her career as a designer. Currently, at 25 she makes a living off of selling her works. She describes her brand as “very playful and not divided into size or gender” of course taking inspiration from her personal androgynous style. We see her walking the line between masculine and feminine dress when she turns traditionally masculine sneakers into a . Her other creations utilize sneakers as a , or fashion a , the perfect accessory to a lacy dress. furry heeled boot glitzy headdress timberland into a collar For the most part, her projects are gender-neutral - not in that they look genderless, but rather they utilize aspects from the fashion gender binary, most often the masculine component being an old sneaker, and the feminine aspect being something sparkly, or lacy. Sustainability Sustainability is a key component of her brand. All of her creations are made from unwanted sneakers donated from her followers or local charity shops. She herself has not purchased anything retail for the past few years, only consuming secondhand. In an environment of retailers that she believes are , she wanted to establish herself as a completely transparent sustainable brand. greenwashing How Does her Faith Play Into the Brand? Alongside this, in her Instagram bios are “​​sometimes you gotta mashallah (Liberate) yourself” and “Alhamdulillah (Praise God), another independent fashion brand trying to be as sustainable as possible”. Among young Muslims, the word Haram is often used to describe something that goes against the religion, AKA a sin. The word has built up a reputation for being slang. In the religion, the mode of dress is quite modest, especially for women. Although most women follow this regime to different degrees the rules are as follows; All must be covered except for hands, feet, and face (excluding hair); The clothing must be loose and not form-fitting as not to define the shape of the body; The clothes must not be see-through as not to create the illusion of nakedness; The modesty of regulation extends to flashy components of clothing (this includes things that are shiny or make noise as you wear it). Deconstructing Sneakers and Instagram Influence with Berlin-Based Designer “All Amin”

I've spent ridiculous amounts of time thinking about scraping, first as one of the founders of Two Tap, a sort of Plaid approach but for eCommerce, and then for a year at Honey (Honey acquired Two Tap). The standard approach in scraping is building puppeteer or selenium scripts that gather information or perform specific actions based on selectors. Imagine that you want to scrape the titles on reddit.com. First, you have to figure out a path to those titles (for instance ) and then how to navigate the pagination (for example, clicking on ). '.posts .title' '.pagination .next a' But things always break, and the most common situations are either the pages change, and selectors don't work anymore or the site themselves have odd problems— they have developers who can write buggy code too. At Two Tap we had a fantastic team dedicated to creating new integrations, managing existing ones, and handling edge cases. The system was built around handling failures so that whenever something odd happened, someone could intervene and resolve the issue without the end customer noticing. A rough estimate would be that the team spent 75% of their time with product pages, 15% avoiding anti-robot CDNs, and 5% on estimates, with checkout and everything else splitting the other 5%. We never thought of going deeper into automation because product pages had too many edge cases. Extensions have a completely different problem. Since actions happen in a user's browser there's no way for humans to intervene and resolve failures. Things silently break all the time. Earlier this year, I left Honey with the goal of traveling and clearing my head after everything that happened there. I wanted to take a break after seven years of nonstop work, but COVID-19 happened. Being locked up, I started thinking. A product page I don't believe can be automated, but could something be built for applying coupons ? The answer is YES! without selectors Here is how it works You can split applying coupons into three things: 1) figuring out if you are on a page with a promo field 2) applying the coupon 3) understanding if the coupon worked and its value To find if we can apply a coupon, we look at all the visible text on the page and use cosine sentence similarity to match a bunch of keywords. Here we find "Enter Promo Code." Then we check if there's an input and a button nearby. If these elements are super close we assume everything is all OK. However, there are situations where this doesn't work, like below. We can see that "Apply promotion code" is a link that makes the necessary fields visible once tapped. Our approach makes the following assumption: if cosine similarity is high (meaning it's like the text implies coupon codes) and if it's something clickable, and if we have a functional pricing cluster nearby, then we decide we can apply coupons. The next step involves just determining the total price. This is a bit tricky; we use OPTICS clustering and some rules to find the most likely candidate group for price information and try to guess the most likely total price. We apply the coupon using the fields we previously discovered, fetch the total price again and diff the visible texts before and after applying them. Determining if the coupon works pretty much means looking at the original total price vs. how it looks after each time we apply a coupon. We can also diff what is visible before we apply the coupon with what is after, and most times, this returns the error message if the coupon failed. We could again use cosine similarity with some known failure messages to be super confident about failure. In the same diff we can figure out if we need to perform specific actions like clicking an OK button or remove the coupon so the next one can be applied. Here is the for it where you can play around with a bookmarklet. You can find the code for all this on . website Github It works ~75% of the time In my tests, it worked about 70–80% of the time. You can find the situations where it didn't work and why . Some of those situations could be resolved with some per-site configurations options, such as accepting a bigger distance between the pricing cluster and the apply coupon link. here It works on mobile too Mobile web is annoying for a lot of scraping companies since sites can be utterly different vs desktop. This approach mostly works on mobile without or with very few changes. Wouldn't it be amazing if there'd be a way to try out coupons when shopping in mobile Safari or Chrome? Someone could build an app that inserts the algorithm in a webview and lets shoppers browse sites. It’s pretty fast Both OPTICS and cosine similarity algorithms are fast. Initially, I played with tensorflow.js and use, but it was killing my laptop. I don't think it makes sense at this stage. One avenue to make this approach production ready It took me about a week and a half to write this and did it mostly as a pet peeve. I have no intention to do anything with this code myself, but if I did here is how I would approach it. Step 1. Clean it up. Make most of the hardcoded values configurable. When something fails, it should report why it failed. Version it. Step 2. Build a dashboard where humans can test this approach on each retailer site. No need for complicated selectors; they have to add products to the cart, go to the cart page, and run everything once to make sure things are OK. If all is good, they can whitelist (or enable) the site. If it's not OK to let them try out different configuration options based on where it failed. For instance, if it doesn't work because price clusters are too far away from coupon link, you can give the person trying it out an option to increase that distance. Sure, it would be not very clear to have a random set of configurations options, but you can have a dashboard that asks questions if it breaks. Like: "It seems like these elements are too far apart. Try increasing the maximum distance but make sure it doesn't trigger the pop up on other pages." Step 3. Bake the code inside the extension as Google might be upset about dynamic code (which would be ideal). Since you want to improve the code over time, make sure you keep track of which code version is linked to which extension release. For instance, code v0.1 might not work on footlocker, but code v0.2 does. Extension vE35.0 has code v0.2 so you should keep track of what version was tested there. If you are doing this on mobile, you don't need to worry about anything. You can dynamically insert javascript and update the code as needed. Step 4. Finding coupons is pretty easy, you can use . If you want more you can always subscribe to store newsletters and social media and track offers. FMTC That’s about it. Ew, rules based approaches I feel you. I wish I could have built something using deep learning and impress everybody. The version presented above approach seems so pre 2010 imagenet. It reminds me of how translation was handled before deep learning. Simultaneously, it feels like the problem area is significantly smaller, which  means this approach could be the direction for a full-on solution. Meanwhile, I heard Honey has built something similar using a contemporary machine learning approach, which I find pretty cool. It would be great if they published how they did it. Big brands are beginning to jump on this trend using emojis in their marketing strategy (e.g., Dominos, IHOP, McDonalds, Foot Locker, etc.). Dominos created a pizza emoji for customers to place orders. This innovative idea led them to win the Titanium Grand Prix award. Movie marketers are also using GIFs and short-form video — like vine, vimeo and others — as well to draw in viewers. So what are Emoticons, Emojis and GIFs? Twitter Statistics GIFs and other short form videos are the perfect way to grab people’s attention in . These bite size videos don’t reveal TOO much of the film, are very entertaining, and unlike trailers, don’t reveal too much of the film. Fans get a quick glimpse of what’s to come and leave movie fans feeling excited about the new release. marketing movies The use of GIFs will continue to grow in 2016 The fact that Facebook and other social channels are beginning to add support for GIFs in their platforms endorses their virality. And, with more opportunity to publish GIFs, more GIF-making tools will come to market. In 2015 we saw imgur, and others launch to make it much easier for average users to make their own GIFs. gifmaker.io 2016 will see the gif world continue to flourish as these social platforms endorse and bring images to life, allowing creators to continue entertaining us through their short form content, gifs, and animations everywhere.
