Bitcoin’s price started pumping, some altcoins caught a bid, US regulators said they’re reviewing spot bitcoin ETF applications, and next thing you know everybody's saying bitcoin’s in a bull market. Seems silly. If bitcoin’s price stays above $15,600, then it’s been in a bull market since November 2022. Where were the bulls a year ago? At that time, I said it’ll take a while—possibly years—before we know whether or not bitcoin’s in a bull market. Has enough time gone by to make a judgment? No. Beware of the bull That has nothing to do with ETFs, narratives, lines on a chart, or anything else. A bull market is defined as a sustained period of time when the price goes up. Bitcoin’s price goes up all the time! Altcoins crash 50–90% in the bull markets and go up 100–1,000% in the bear markets. Those are violent swings—and they’re normal! Bitcoin's price is already up 120% since January. For any other asset, that's a banner year. How much better could it possibly get? Especially in these trying circumstances, when everybody's talking about persistent inflation, rising interest rates, credit crisis, exhausted consumers, housing prices, exploding deficits, and general economic angst. Your favorite YouTuber follows the bull market support band—but Bitcoin’s price goes above and below it all the time. Five times this year already! How much faith can you put in any pump when bitcoin’s price goes back down afterward? This boom ain’t as booming as you think Mark, you’re just salty because you missed the bottom! No. I bought most of 2022. Bitcoin earlier in the year, altcoins later in the year. I also encouraged my newsletter subscribers to do the same. In 2023, my subscribers did this: If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you have a strong allocation to the market with cash to spare. Let’s not assume that the market’s any more of a “bull” now than a year ago. Since the most recent low on September 11, 2023, bitcoin’s price is up 50% in 66 days. That’s less than the 53% rise over 66 days from its generational low of $15,600 on November 21, 2022 until January 25, 2023. Both are less than the 60% jump from March 10 to April 14, 2023 (more boom in less time). Experts called those previous moves “bear market rallies,” echo bubbles and such. Our latest rally hasn’t even beaten those other ones. Also, they all ended with a drop. Why should this time be different? Another bubble within a bubble This market is one constant series of booms and busts over short timeframes and long timeframes. It’s easy to get disoriented. Bull markets look like bear markets, bear markets look like bull markets. It’s the anatomy of a bubble meme on repeat. Most people say that 2018 to 2020 was a bear market. They say the bull market started at the end of 2020. How did that turn out? Take a look: Bitcoin’s price spent more time going up in the bear market than it did in the bull market! Today, its price is higher than it was for most of 2022, the “worst year to buy crypto,” but only recently did you hear chatter on YouTube and Twitter about bull markets and the last chance to “front-run the spot ETF.” At least, that’s today’s story. Tomorrow, who knows what the story will be. Look down before you look up You're looking for confirmation that the bottom is in. The bottom is $0! (Some altcoins will get there.) A drop to $24,000 makes a lot more sense than $0, for the reasons I noted in a number of updates for subscribers to my newsletter, . Crypto is Easy We may never get to that price. Ideally, bitcoin’s price will stay above roughly $32,000. We have some reasons to expect that it will. ALONE WITH THE BEAST FOLK I faced these people, facing my fate in them, single-handed now,—literally single-handed, for I had a broken arm. In my pocket was a revolver with two empty chambers. Among the chips scattered about the beach lay the two axes that had been used to chop up the boats. The tide was creeping in behind me. There was nothing for it but courage. I looked squarely into the faces of the advancing monsters. They avoided my eyes, and their quivering nostrils investigated the bodies that lay beyond me on the beach. I took half-a-dozen steps, picked up the blood-stained whip that lay beneath the body of the Wolf-man, and cracked it. They stopped and stared at me. “Salute!” said I. “Bow down!” They hesitated. One bent his knees. I repeated my command, with my heart in my mouth, and advanced upon them. One knelt, then the other two. I turned and walked towards the dead bodies, keeping my face towards the three kneeling Beast Men, very much as an actor passing up the stage faces the audience. “They broke the Law,” said I, putting my foot on the Sayer of the Law. “They have been slain,—even the Sayer of the Law; even the Other with the Whip. Great is the Law! Come and see.” “None escape,” said one of them, advancing and peering. “None escape,” said I. “Therefore hear and do as I command.” They stood up, looking questioningly at one another. “Stand there,” said I. I picked up the hatchets and swung them by their heads from the sling of my arm; turned Montgomery over; picked up his revolver still loaded in two chambers, and bending down to rummage, found half-a-dozen cartridges in his pocket. “Take him,” said I, standing up again and pointing with the whip; “take him, and carry him out and cast him into the sea.” They came forward, evidently still afraid of Montgomery, but still more afraid of my cracking red whip-lash; and after some fumbling and hesitation, some whip-cracking and shouting, they lifted him gingerly, carried him down to the beach, and went splashing into the dazzling welter of the sea. “On!” said I, “on! Carry him far.” They went in up to their armpits and stood regarding me. “Let go,” said I; and the body of Montgomery vanished with a splash. Something seemed to tighten across my chest. “Good!” said I, with a break in my voice; and they came back, hurrying and fearful, to the margin of the water, leaving long wakes of black in the silver. At the water’s edge they stopped, turning and glaring into the sea as though they presently expected Montgomery to arise therefrom and exact vengeance. “Now these,” said I, pointing to the other bodies. They took care not to approach the place where they had thrown Montgomery into the water, but instead, carried the four dead Beast People slantingly along the beach for perhaps a hundred yards before they waded out and cast them away. As I watched them disposing of the mangled remains of M’ling, I heard a light footfall behind me, and turning quickly saw the big Hyena-swine perhaps a dozen yards away. His head was bent down, his bright eyes were fixed upon me, his stumpy hands clenched and held close by his side. He stopped in this crouching attitude when I turned, his eyes a little averted. For a moment we stood eye to eye. I dropped the whip and snatched at the pistol in my pocket; for I meant to kill this brute, the most formidable of any left now upon the island, at the first excuse. It may seem treacherous, but so I was resolved. I was far more afraid of him than of any other two of the Beast Folk. His continued life was I knew a threat against mine. I was perhaps a dozen seconds collecting myself. Then cried I, “Salute! Bow down!” His teeth flashed upon me in a snarl. “Who are you that I should—” Perhaps a little too spasmodically I drew my revolver, aimed quickly and fired. I heard him yelp, saw him run sideways and turn, knew I had missed, and clicked back the cock with my thumb for the next shot. But he was already running headlong, jumping from side to side, and I dared not risk another miss. Every now and then he looked back at me over his shoulder. He went slanting along the beach, and vanished beneath the driving masses of dense smoke that were still pouring out from the burning enclosure. For some time I stood staring after him. I turned to my three obedient Beast Folk again and signalled them to drop the body they still carried. Then I went back to the place by the fire where the bodies had fallen and kicked the sand until all the brown blood-stains were absorbed and hidden. I dismissed my three serfs with a wave of the hand, and went up the beach into the thickets. I carried my pistol in my hand, my whip thrust with the hatchets in the sling of my arm. I was anxious to be alone, to think out the position in which I was now placed. A dreadful thing that I was only beginning to realise was, that over all this island there was now no safe place where I could be alone and secure to rest or sleep. I had recovered strength amazingly since my landing, but I was still inclined to be nervous and to break down under any great stress. I felt that I ought to cross the island and establish myself with the Beast People, and make myself secure in their confidence. But my heart failed me. I went back to the beach, and turning eastward past the burning enclosure, made for a point where a shallow spit of coral sand ran out towards the reef. Here I could sit down and think, my back to the sea and my face against any surprise. And there I sat, chin on knees, the sun beating down upon my head and unspeakable dread in my mind, plotting how I could live on against the hour of my rescue (if ever rescue came). I tried to review the whole situation as calmly as I could, but it was difficult to clear the thing of emotion. I began turning over in my mind the reason of Montgomery’s despair. “They will change,” he said; “they are sure to change.” And Moreau, what was it that Moreau had said? “The stubborn beast-flesh grows day by day back again.” Then I came round to the Hyena-swine. I felt sure that if I did not kill that brute, he would kill me. The Sayer of the Law was dead: worse luck. They knew now that we of the Whips could be killed even as they themselves were killed. Were they peering at me already out of the green masses of ferns and palms over yonder, watching until I came within their spring? Were they plotting against me? What was the Hyena-swine telling them? My imagination was running away with me into a morass of unsubstantial fears. My thoughts were disturbed by a crying of sea-birds hurrying towards some black object that had been stranded by the waves on the beach near the enclosure. I knew what that object was, but I had not the heart to go back and drive them off. I began walking along the beach in the opposite direction, designing to come round the eastward corner of the island and so approach the ravine of the huts, without traversing the possible ambuscades of the thickets. Perhaps half a mile along the beach I became aware of one of my three Beast Folk advancing out of the landward bushes towards me. I was now so nervous with my own imaginings that I immediately drew my revolver. Even the propitiatory gestures of the creature failed to disarm me. He hesitated as he approached. “Go away!” cried I. There was something very suggestive of a dog in the cringing attitude of the creature. It retreated a little way, very like a dog being sent home, and stopped, looking at me imploringly with canine brown eyes. “Go away,” said I. “Do not come near me.” “May I not come near you?” it said. “No; go away,” I insisted, and snapped my whip. Then putting my whip in my teeth, I stooped for a stone, and with that threat drove the creature away. So in solitude I came round by the ravine of the Beast People, and hiding among the weeds and reeds that separated this crevice from the sea I watched such of them as appeared, trying to judge from their gestures and appearance how the death of Moreau and Montgomery and the destruction of the House of Pain had affected them. I know now the folly of my cowardice. Had I kept my courage up to the level of the dawn, had I not allowed it to ebb away in solitary thought, I might have grasped the vacant sceptre of Moreau and ruled over the Beast People. As it was I lost the opportunity, and sank to the position of a mere leader among my fellows. Towards noon certain of them came and squatted basking in the hot sand. The imperious voices of hunger and thirst prevailed over my dread. I came out of the bushes, and, revolver in hand, walked down towards these seated figures. One, a Wolf-woman, turned her head and stared at me, and then the others. None attempted to rise or salute me. I felt too faint and weary to insist, and I let the moment pass. “I want food,” said I, almost apologetically, and drawing near. “There is food in the huts,” said an Ox-boar-man, drowsily, and looking away from me. I passed them, and went down into the shadow and odours of the almost deserted ravine. In an empty hut I feasted on some specked and half-decayed fruit; and then after I had propped some branches and sticks about the opening, and placed myself with my face towards it and my hand upon my revolver, the exhaustion of the last thirty hours claimed its own, and I fell into a light slumber, hoping that the flimsy barricade I had erected would cause sufficient noise in its removal to save me from surprise. CONCERNING THE BEAST FOLK I woke early. Moreau’s explanation stood before my mind, clear and definite, from the moment of my awakening. I got out of the hammock and went to the door to assure myself that the key was turned. Then I tried the window-bar, and found it firmly fixed. That these man-like creatures were in truth only bestial monsters, mere grotesque travesties of men, filled me with a vague uncertainty of their possibilities which was far worse than any definite fear. A tapping came at the door, and I heard the glutinous accents of M’ling speaking. I pocketed one of the revolvers (keeping one hand upon it), and opened to him. “Good-morning, sair,” he said, bringing in, in addition to the customary herb-breakfast, an ill-cooked rabbit. Montgomery followed him. His roving eye caught the position of my arm and he smiled askew. The puma was resting to heal that day; but Moreau, who was singularly solitary in his habits, did not join us. I talked with Montgomery to clear my ideas of the way in which the Beast Folk lived. In particular, I was urgent to know how these inhuman monsters were kept from falling upon Moreau and Montgomery and from rending one another. He explained to me that the comparative safety of Moreau and himself was due to the limited mental scope of these monsters. In spite of their increased intelligence and the tendency of their animal instincts to reawaken, they had certain fixed ideas implanted by Moreau in their minds, which absolutely bounded their imaginations. They were really hypnotised; had been told that certain things were impossible, and that certain things were not to be done, and these prohibitions were woven into the texture of their minds beyond any possibility of disobedience or dispute. Certain matters, however, in which old instinct was at war with Moreau’s convenience, were in a less stable condition. A series of propositions called the Law (I had already heard them recited) battled in their minds with the deep-seated, ever-rebellious cravings of their animal natures. This Law they were ever repeating, I found, and ever breaking. Both Montgomery and Moreau displayed particular solicitude to keep them ignorant of the taste of blood; they feared the inevitable suggestions of that flavour. Montgomery told me that the Law, especially among the feline Beast People, became oddly weakened about nightfall; that then the animal was at its strongest; that a spirit of adventure sprang up in them at the dusk, when they would dare things they never seemed to dream about by day. To that I owed my stalking by the Leopard-man, on the night of my arrival. But during these earlier days of my stay they broke the Law only furtively and after dark; in the daylight there was a general atmosphere of respect for its multifarious prohibitions. And here perhaps I may give a few general facts about the island and the Beast People. The island, which was of irregular outline and lay low upon the wide sea, had a total area, I suppose, of seven or eight square miles. It was volcanic in origin, and was now fringed on three sides by coral reefs; some fumaroles to the northward, and a hot spring, were the only vestiges of the forces that had long since originated it. Now and then a faint quiver of earthquake would be sensible, and sometimes the ascent of the spire of smoke would be rendered tumultuous by gusts of steam; but that was all. The population of the island, Montgomery informed me, now numbered rather more than sixty of these strange creations of Moreau’s art, not counting the smaller monstrosities which lived in the undergrowth and were without human form. Altogether he had made nearly a hundred and twenty; but many had died, and others—like the writhing Footless Thing of which he had told me—had come by violent ends. In answer to my question, Montgomery said that they actually bore offspring, but that these generally died. When they lived, Moreau took them and stamped the human form upon them. There was no evidence of the inheritance of their acquired human characteristics. The females were less numerous than the males, and liable to much furtive persecution in spite of the monogamy the Law enjoined. [2] This description corresponds in every respect to Noble’s Isle.—C. E. P. [2] It would be impossible for me to describe these Beast People in detail; my eye has had no training in details, and unhappily I cannot sketch. Most striking, perhaps, in their general appearance was the disproportion between the legs of these creatures and the length of their bodies; and yet—so relative is our idea of grace—my eye became habituated to their forms, and at last I even fell in with their persuasion that my own long thighs were ungainly. Another point was the forward carriage of the head and the clumsy and inhuman curvature of the spine. Even the Ape-man lacked that inward sinuous curve of the back which makes the human figure so graceful. Most had their shoulders hunched clumsily, and their short forearms hung weakly at their sides. Few of them were conspicuously hairy, at least until the end of my time upon the island. The next most obvious deformity was in their faces, almost all of which were prognathous, malformed about the ears, with large and protuberant noses, very furry or very bristly hair, and often strangely-coloured or strangely-placed eyes. None could laugh, though the Ape-man had a chattering titter. Beyond these general characters their heads had little in common; each preserved the quality of its particular species: the human mark distorted but did not hide the leopard, the ox, or the sow, or other animal or animals, from which the creature had been moulded. The voices, too, varied exceedingly. The hands were always malformed; and though some surprised me by their unexpected human appearance, almost all were deficient in the number of the digits, clumsy about the finger-nails, and lacking any tactile sensibility. The two most formidable Animal Men were my Leopard-man and a creature made of hyena and swine. Larger than these were the three bull-creatures who pulled in the boat. Then came the silvery-hairy-man, who was also the Sayer of the Law, M’ling, and a satyr-like creature of ape and goat. There were three Swine-men and a Swine-woman, a mare-rhinoceros-creature, and several other females whose sources I did not ascertain. There were several wolf-creatures, a bear-bull, and a Saint-Bernard-man. I have already described the Ape-man, and there was a particularly hateful (and evil-smelling) old woman made of vixen and bear, whom I hated from the beginning. She was said to be a passionate votary of the Law. Smaller creatures were certain dappled youths and my little sloth-creature. But enough of this catalogue. At first I had a shivering horror of the brutes, felt all too keenly that they were still brutes; but insensibly I became a little habituated to the idea of them, and moreover I was affected by Montgomery’s attitude towards them. Interview with privacy blockchain, Panther Protocol regarding protecting user data on blockchain. It’s 2021 and the great mainstreaming is here, bringing with it an end to ICOs/ITOs and making way for a new generation of blockchain projects that are working leaner, with small private fundraising and agile teams, to pave the way for the future of blockchain technology. But at last count, there were nearly 9,000 altcoins -- and hundreds of first layer blockchain network solutions, each vying for its own unique identity and reason to carry on into the future. Of course, the price of entry in this field seems to be the same mantra -- decentralized, secure, immutable, three of the core benefits of any blockchain project and certainly sentiments likely to appear in nearly any project white paper. But is blockchain really ? private We interviewed Oliver Gale, CEO of Panther Protocol, which bills itself as a “privacy blockchain network” to talk about what constitutes privacy for a user on blockchain, where the ideals go wrong, and how Panther is trying to address the need. Oliver Gale, CEO of Panther Protocol As an end-to-end privacy protocol -- what is Panther doing to ensure privacy beyond the standard privacy we have come to expect from blockchain? Actually, there’s no privacy in most major blockchains. At best you have pseudo privacy --  no one knows that address belongs to you, until you share it with someone else so they can pay you. It becomes trivial to use statistics and machine learning to de-anonymize everything you do with your money. Panther solves this by making assets private, called zAssets, and is built to do this seamlessly for the user. In some cases, users won’t even know they used Panther. Often more control means less decentralization -- is maintaining decentralization a key to greater privacy? Absolutely, no control of your data equals no privacy. At best, you may have confidentiality in that another party chooses not to disclose your information, but that’s not privacy. To be clear, privacy is the way civilization for all time has operated. Only in the last 25 years with retail internet adoption has our right to privacy been systematically exploited and attacked by large corporations and malicious actors. We have to reverse that. How does greater privacy benefit the average retail consumer? How does it benefit businesses? For users, it’s proven that you lose competitive advantage in negotiations without privacy. Simplest example -- expect the online retailer to price gouge you forever because they know your financial buying power. Alice paid $500 USD for that new phone, but for Bob it’s $550 USD -- this already happens. Blockchain will make it worse if we don’t take privacy seriously. For business owners, it’s about data compliance and competitors. Your bestsellers? Your most faithful buyers? Expect them to be targeted and taken with better offers as an example. Data compliance is another important one. Without data privacy for users, your service is uncompetitive as no one will choose two identical services except that one puts your data onto a blockchain for all time. It’s simply inferior. Privacy wins, ask Signal and Telegram as they snatch market share from Whatsapp. What do people fail to understand about privacy on blockchain -- isn't the baseline assumption that it is already private? I can’t say whether or not it’s assumed. Generally, people have grown so accustomed to giving their data away they don’t think about it. However, as awareness builds over the exploitation of our personal data consumer trends are shifting and as they do, people are realizing more and more that blockchains -- as they are defined and built today -- are not private at all. Is interoperability key to the future of blockchain? Do you expect greater diversification or consolidation in the available chains over the next 5 years? Interoperability is definitely key. There will be both, the leaders of the pack, in their respective niches will take greater market share and overall market caps will grow. At the same time, there are many untapped niches so we will see new use cases emerge. What does Panther bring to the table that no other project is doing? Aside from interoperable, seamless privacy for everyone? Panther brings the key ability to work with existing regulations. Privacy is about the protection of users and businesses but also from bad actors. The protocol enables zero knowledge disclosures of statements of fact, like whether your ID is valid or your transaction was over a certain limit, and these are key to safeguarding the financial system. Panther enables institutions to say “we want you to have privacy to the rest of the world, but if you want to use our services we need to know”. That’s reasonable, balanced and appropriate, so Panther users can choose to share this data automatically. # # # Panther has a public sale coming up in August and is launching its first product in September 2021. To this point, Panther Protocol has raised over $8 million in VC and private funding. Panther Protocol is not the first blockchain to lead with privacy, but its focus on privacy for the user may indicate good things to come for users of blockchain technology. A greater focus on protecting user information will be an important safeguard for people who may be placing blind faith in blockchain solutions assuming that they are inherently more secure and private then non-blockchain counterparts. As more blockchain networks and layer 1 solutions enter the arena, it will ultimately benefit both developers and users. Summary: Soon, the securitization of small businesses and fractionalization of real assets will take a legitimate form. Things will never be as they used to be; the climate is changing, not the weather. Once set loose, the mutation won’t stop because financial tokens have a wide avenue open to proceed to dynamically programmable investor relations and feed yet another AI giant. Even if the transition from legacy to blockchain-recorded (tokenized) assets dies, the limited period when the world will be overloaded with junk security tokens (and broader, financial tokens) is imminent. It’ll take a lot of altruism from business people to self-coordinate themselves. Some serious suffering is unavoidable. The most important outcome is the birth and adoption of programmable legal entities. The gambling of crypto and the real need for easier securitization and fractionalization played the role of the Trojan horse, introducing much more important innovation. From Securities to Financial Tokens Many fruits of progress started with a backward-looking appearance. First cars were not cars, they were horseless carriages. It wasn’t harmless. Dangerous weight distribution on the chassis with no aerodynamic design, neglect of free incidental electricity on board, and other mistakes that would be obvious for a heritage-free mind have severely devalued the modernization. A short while later, of course, the features of carriages and phaetons have all but vanished, but the first years the only innovation in power was the dismissal of the horse. In the case of investments, the horse is . Today, accounting systems dominate the processes of issuance and circulation of securities. The terms between the entrepreneur and the investor are mostly defined by an instrument standard (for example, a share of a stock that gives the right to receive dividends and vote) and the rules the particular exchange has to obey. His Majesty the Accountant Financial tokens take away the function from a whole layer of intermediaries who have successfully institutionalized themselves in the wet gap between the entrepreneur and the investor over the past centuries. Need to pay dividends? The token will do. Need to ensure the right to vote? No problem. Any function of any existing investment instrument can be coded in a few lines. Even more astonishing from the traditional perspective: the very same token can be traded on any number of exchanges. The stage of mimicry with the traditional form is inevitably followed by a deep and pragmatic exploitation of the entire technological potential. It will soon be admitted that the extreme standardization of securities is a historically justified but clearly outdated compulsory measure. Uninstalling mediators in investments is only the beginning. At the next step, well-established investment scenarios, such as stocks and bonds, may give way to sophisticated, customized, almost “complete contracts”. From Financial Tokens to Dynamically Programmable Investor Relations Some technologies are so existentially important that Nature insistently pushes their introduction, by hook or by crook, on board of some Trojan horses. For example, rockets are necessary for the survival of mankind as we can’t inhabit a spare celestial body without them. The technology was already well understood in the nineteenth century, but it took the senseless quarrel between maniac dictators many decades later to actually pay for it, with the money that was robbed from the crippled peoples. The programmability of legal entities was always needed. At the very least, to reduce tax fraud. Software finally finds its way into every facet of our lives; it is quite strange that it took so long to penetrate into a sphere of that significance. Finally, in 2018, gambling has played the role of the Trojan horse in introduction of this technology. _The Next Big Thing_hackernoon.com Programmable Legal Entities The sin of compulsive gambling is as old as time and absolutely ineradicable. The business of extracting money from addicts has mutated many times. Only in the last twenty years we have seen the rise of filthy “forex”, binary “options”, online “casinos”, and most recently — ICOs of “utility tokens”. In a typical good country, gambling is mainly regulated to channel the evil, not to replenish the treasury. In the same vein, building sport arenas and maintaining fan cults is the cheapest way to neutralize the inevitable few percent of aggressive population. However, for a few dwarf countries, selling offshore gambling licenses is simply a cynical export of vice. But there is also a gray intermediate zone, when the authorities see both short-term profits and incentives for long-term development. For example, it has always seemed controversial how tolerant Israeli authorities are to the fact that their land wielded the world’s largest technological hub for the organization of trading in extremely dubious forms, despite the fact that it is strictly prohibited to sell such “products” to the citizens of the country. But it was clever of them. Malta did something even smarter this year. It is difficult to say to what extent Maltese legislators succumbed to the lobbying efforts of the global “ICO and crypto-trading elite”, and to what extent they became interested in the prospects of regulated financial tokens. It is important that the bureaucrats found good experts and formed a very logical layer of legislation. They could have simply legalized the circulation of cryptocurrencies and tokens, but they doubled-down and created a special governing body to work with new business entities (this is a huge breakthrough, for in most countries they are trying to push it to one of the existing dominions) and introduced a new, special type of legal (programmable) entity. The latter circumstance will not manifest itself for some time. Companies will issue tokens, exchanges will gain licenses, people will invest and speculate. Token markets will be perceived as complementary to traditional ones. However, the hook on which the institution of investments hangs today has already been broken. This is an experiment that seems to be counter-intuitive: the lower end of the spring, for some time, naturally “does not know” that the upper end is loose. From the position of the lower part, the acceleration created by the elastic force still works and compensates for the acceleration of gravity. It does not matter that the force is created by the deformation of the body that is flying in, soon to collide. Perfect Storm I see three factors that will integrally give the transformation process an enormous power: Practically infinite growth potential for securitization and fractionalization. Strong independent incentives on both ends of the classic two-sided market. A powerful civilizational perspective. Practically Infinite Growth Potential In physical estimations, there is a professional practice to simply neglect the values two orders of magnitude down from the characteristic one for the considered process. That is, if your billiards balls are 200 grams each, specks of two grams on the table is something you ignore. What share, do you think, of the world’s wealth is already put into circulation today? In other words, how much worth can be freely bought and sold, more or less, in relation to everything that is of monetary value on this planet (we’re talking real stuff — abstract derivatives do not count)? Surprisingly, no more than 1%! To begin with, the largest asset class, real estate, is practically not securitized. There are, of course, a variety of funds in which you can buy shares but, in practice, it is impossible to “short Palo Alto” or “long Brooklyn”, for a reasonable amount of money. We can safely expect that in the presence of a convenient technological framework, a few percent of these three-hundred trillion dollars will be securitized in no time at all. In addition, in several years the market of agricultural land should face the tectonic shifts due to the introduction of cultured meat. So, securitization comes in very handy. But securitization of small business will create the most powerful wave. The aggregate value of small business is much higher than the market capitalization of public companies. In the current situation, it is extremely difficult and expensive to bring small enterprise stocks to an exchange, while almost all owners want it. Titanic amounts of money will enter. Strong Independent Incentives One fair objection may be that most people won’t rush to buy the shares of small businesses, as a company is small probably because it is simply not good enough to grow. True, but do not forget about the factor of programmable entities. Many new “small tokens” can be born as a result of an artificial fragmentation of a bigger traditional enterprise. Programmable legal entities will allow the creation of modular management and libraries of “standard firms”. The complexity of the software structure can be increased indefinitely, as opposed to manually managed organizations. If you have shares of a large company, you are forced to sponsor all its initiatives, including, for example, flirting with the military, expensive attempts not to look like a monopolist, and dozens of dead projects. The company cannot issue shares on a project basis, but tokens issued by an interconnected group of programmable legal entities is quite a realistic approach. It is important to abstract from the old patterns and recognize that individual, contractual relations is what investors should reasonably want and demand. And companies need it too. Economically responsible opinions of thousands of people is worth a lot. This may be a whole new facet of crowdsourcing. New Class of Big Data Elon Musk recently expressed the thought that people on this planet were put into the role of the limbic system under the cortex of global social applications. As in the case of an individual, the cortex is “smarter”, but it is in the servant position to the limbic system which is the generator of happiness. With the broad adoption of programmable legal entities, it will be the turn of businesses, as independent “smart” units, to directly become “slaves” of new big data accumulators. I think we will soon see completely new forms of the network effect. The aggregate expectation is clear: even if the existing capital market is a powerful pickup truck, at least several dump trucks are flying across its way. Potential Difficulties All tokens are authentic, and their security level is generally considered equal to the transport blockchain’s. However, each family of tokens will be backed up by a different unconditional legal promise of the issuer, varying in quality, just like fiat currencies (there are reserve ones, there are ordinary ones, and there are junk ones). A token, being a negotiable instrument, can be legally enforced to be redeemed by the party in possession but with a different effort. The above creates a stratification problem when various underwriters will create and use tokens representing and value but different redemption reality. Of course, the market price will reflect that but the high speed and convenience of digital exchanges do not takes us any closer to the high standards of the legacy environment. There will be just too many issuers. Jurisdiction that will follow Malta (and they will follow) will need time to make their rules interoperable, even if they have the will. same class nominal property $16,000 To reduce stratification and to avoid the future assets space from devolving into a junkyard, competing agencies will offer paths to operator validation procedures. That might do the opposite and increase the chaos of the transition period. It’s going to be filtering war against the creeping invasion of shit-operators in an environment of good operators being stubbornly conservative. Maybe the altruistic evolutionary mechanisms will be turned on. This is probably the case where the format/standard war is not good for anyone. I observed a few anxious questions on social media. “ ” Why is Bitcoin not recovering? “ ” Any reason why ripple’s price is tumbling? Will it recover? I was troubled because I understand the psychological pressure to some level. A few had invested earnings of their lifetime and some even mortgaged their houses. If you know someone of that sort, I urge you to read this article and if my reasons make sense, please persuade them to cash out their investment. I am not talking about people who have invested reasonably. But, those who have no experience in trading, those who were victims of the “ ” scheme, and those who don’t understand the risks of the crypto market. Get rich quick I am not an expert who can tell you if Bitcoin is a bubble or not. But, if it turns out to be a bubble, then there would be depression, in worst case suicides. I hope we could prevent that to some extent. I was too late to accept and realise, otherwise this would have been written much earlier. Invention of Bitcoin was a game changer, it’s underlying technology Blockchain will surely impact the world positively. But_,_ we forget to ask if the intentions of the invention still hold true? It was invented to bank the unbanked, to help the immigrants, to support the poor, etc. Let us have a reality check. What is the truth? Has it helped the greedy or the needy? Did it help the criminals or the innocent? I could be wrong ( ). I will come out as a fool to write such an article. But, I would take my chances since I have little to lose. In the case of bitcoin, in 2013 it was around $300, a year ago $1000, last month it raised to $19k. If a beginner would have invested during the timeline, there is a possibility he has developed an addiction. This could cause him to make a riskier bet. Consistency Joe could have walked away instead of betting again. He wanted to convince others he was right. That made him bet the last $500 in his pocket. There are some people who are thinking “ ”. Most of us at some point have invested time or efforts into some projects even though the results were poor. Once we realise we are in a hole, we must try to come out rather than continuing to dig. Presently the price of bitcoin is at $14K . One can still benefit by selling at least some of the coins. I don’t want to face a loss selling my declining bitcoins. I must prove that I am right Overconfidence “All men think all men mortal, but themselves.” Edward Young We often consider ourself more intelligent than others. In Joe’s case, initial success made him overconfident. “ ” he thought. I want people to consider the possibility of being wrong. We often try to find evidence to support our beliefs or hypothesis. You will find results in google for “ ” and “ ”. But, most people are likely to search and see only the former. I request them to find evidences against their decision and understand the risks. I have only mentioned only some of the biases. But, I hope you get the point. DARPA itself is not an R&D lab but is more of an investment firm with a flexible structure enabling it to 1) capture opportunity quickly by 2) looking for high risk-high reward opportunities that it then 3) program manages with the involvement of the technical experts, technical experts who are now working with machine learning/AI systems that enable DARPA stay 10–15 years ahead of the market. How can your company do this? How can your company stay well ahead of the competition as a driver of technology? What questions are the other players in your industry asking? Are you asking better and deeper questions or just doing the same things?? Is your strategy focused on different approaches to solving the tough problems in your industry? . That straightforward. The “Why GenAI” problem It is now without question that GenAI is the transformative technology of our times. While the business world is grappling with policy, change management, and “general technophobia,” as this HBR article calls it, I see it as being similar to the early days of the internet. At first, it seemed like a novel technology. Then, people were scratching their heads at its application beyond academia, defense, and other niches, followed by an outpour of startups as infrastructure developed and costs reduced, a dot-com crash, and up to where we are today as a society that runs mostly digitally. All that is to say, GenAI has the footprint of a disruptive trend that will be integrated into all aspects of society. What remains to be seen is the pace at which this integration happens in various parts of our lives. A lack of this understanding is probably why we’re seeing businesses say that they’re unclear about investment priorities when it comes to GenAI: In short, despite realizing the need to increase their investments in AI, too many organizations are slow to embrace the revolution. - BCG | From Potential to Profit with GenAI So, businesses are unsure why they should be using GenAI even though they are interested in the technology.  I think that startups and teams working in this space have the opportunity to educate and evangelize the technology in a way that businesses understand the value directly. Topline and bottom line approach While considering this, I wanted to explore how businesses should be thinking about the technology: As a way to enhance customer value and add new revenue streams (top-line growth)


As a way to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs (bottom-line growth) I think it's important to think of top-line and bottom-line growth when adopting GenAI. For businesses, it helps to be very clear on what capabilities of the technology they need to hit the specific growth area. Topline GenAI Businesses are often looking to add new lines of revenue by innovating with their products and services. If a business has customers that have these needs, then GenAI is a good fit to solve those needs and add a new source of revenue to them: Customers want to synthesize the information they create on the business’s platform
Customers want to search and find information without having to do mental gymnastics
Customers want to share their knowledge with others on the business’s platform, and they want to be creative and effective in their message.
Customers want to be less involved in doing mundane and routine tasks on the business’s platform. Some examples of topline GenAI integrations are beautifully captured by the folks at Obvious Ventures: Almost all of the products and services above have integrated GenAI to enhance the value they deliver to their customers. In doing so, these businesses seek to increase user engagement and, therefore, have a solid “why GenAI” answer. Bottomline GenAI While growing user engagement and revenue streams are always great, businesses need to sustain topline growth by thinking about their bottom line, i.e., costs. In fact, I think GenAI is most obvious for internal deployment within a business to make operations vastly more efficient and cost-effective. McKinsey agrees: We estimate that gen AI could offer savings opportunities of $1.4 trillion to $2.6 trillion across operations functions, including customer service, R&D, manufacturing, supply chain, and procurement, alongside its impact on the back office.\ Plenty of research has been done on what sectors have the potential to benefit, as shown in the PWC report. However, the use cases aren’t always obvious from reading reports such as these. If you are a developer or a founder, you would want to know more about the value proposition that you can build, which you will not always find in reports like these. So, let’s talk about the use cases briefly…. Any business has these needs where GenAI will be a great fit: Saving time drafting, summarizing, and following up on internal communications (meetings, emails, posts, and chat threads)
Saving time creating documentation, Customer troubleshooting guides, etc., for knowledge management
Assisting employees in their training, learning, and development programs
Synthesizing customer feedback efficiently
Assisting in the creation of impactful marketing assets easily If you focus on these needs and the GenAI capabilities, you should be on the right path to delivering a compelling value-prop to your potential customers in the sectors mentioned above, and possibly even more.
