The internet is not perfect. It can be censored, surveilled, and controlled by a few private corporations or governments. However, there have been projects that have attempted to correct this and others that are laying the groundwork for achieving it. When we talk about decentralizing the internet, we usually only think about the layers of software, but we often forget about the infrastructure itself. In the end, no matter how decentralized your blockchain and your Dapps are, to access them you have to go through an ISP. One of the most famous attempts to decentralize the internet infrastructure was . It was an app for mobile devices that allowed people to communicate without an ISP connection or cellular service by using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals. The app became popular in Hong Kong during the Umbrella Movement protests in 2014, when it helped protesters communicate with each other without being monitored by authorities. FireChat Another example is - a project for building decentralized satellite networks for connecting rural areas to the Internet without relying on expensive ground infrastructure or government subsidies. Even though Starlink is centralized by being owned by a private entity, this project is paving the way of what a decentralized internet infrastructure could be. Starlink Another point in favor of Starlink is that is owned by a freedom and decentralization advocate that we all know, Elon Musk. Elon's recent purchase of Twitter was driven by his desire to make the platform open-source and decentralized. This has shown that he is a true advocate for freedom and decentralization. Thus, we could expect Starlink to be the project that will decentralize the internet on a global scale, or at least set the groundwork for new, truly open and free alternatives that might be driven by a DAO. On the other hand, we have FireChat, an app that enables people to chat without using the internet, cell towers, or wifi. It uses bluetooth and wifi to connect devices. The idea behind it was to create a chatroom for people who don't have access to a data plan or internet connection. It has been used by protestors in Hong Kong, who were protesting the proposed bill that would have allowed extradition of suspects from Hong Kong to mainland China. They used FireChat as a way of organizing protests and communicating with each other while avoiding being monitored by the Chinese government. The way in which FireChat works is by creating a peer-to-peer mesh of devices and it uses the chips and technology available in the mobile devices we already have. A peer-to-peer mesh networking means that it does not rely on centralized servers to provide or relay network traffic, so it can work in a lot of different situations when there is no ISP or we want to avoid connecting to one. WiFi, 5G, the internet itself, and other advancements or concepts like FireChat show that we are getting closer to more affordable ways of decentralizing the internet. I see the decentralized internet in a similar light as the idea of decentralization in general. There are many applications that can be built on top of a decentralized platform, such as government itself or better solutions to day-to-day necessities of humanity that are currently being provided by private entities for profit. With a really decentralized infrastructure, we can have all those solutions in a democratic and decentralized way.

From FireChat to Starlink: The Best Attempts to Decentralize the Internet

Open Garden, FireChat’s creator has a long history in building peer-to-peer mesh networking technologies to improve access to the Internet. Open Garden first iterations in mobile apps on Android were Open Garden Tether and Open Garden Mesh. Both of these apps reached millions of users and have been used to move tons of data on mobile devices and have been enabling access for free when carriers were charging for tethering. Since the very beginning, app developers were asking Open Garden to build applications on the top of this new generation of network made of direct interconnections between mobile devices. The reality is the government never shut down access to the Internet but there were so many people in the streets of Hong Kong that mobile networks were constantly congested: Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, WeChat didn’t work in the crowd. Why people used FireChat in Hong Kong more than Twitter or any other messaging or social networking app Joshua Wong, one of the leaders of the protests asked students to install the app. This lead to 100,000 new account creations in Hong Kong during the first 24 hours on September 28th and more than 500,000 in less than a week. In the first 4 days of the event FireChat had more than 2 million chat sessions while Twitter reported 1.3 million tweets worldwide about the event in South China Morning post. The app was used for 3 reasons: Spread out information on mobile to the largest number of users. That’s how protesters could organize themselves in an efficient way. Keep on communicating with other users nearby while they were in the crowd and to spread out information. As a symbol of freedom, showing that government would never limit their ability to communicate freely. What happened is probably the largest adoption of a mobile app in history in such a small geographic area in a short period of time. FireChat is demonstrating the power of peer-to-peer mesh as a tool against censorship and for freedom of speech. But behind these recent events there is something much more substantial that Open Garden team is expecting to realize. It is the promise of connecting the next 5 Billion in an efficient and very low cost way that is independent from expensive infrastructures. It doesn’t require billions of dollars of investment; it doesn’t require waiting years to see satellite, balloons or drone technologies attempting to improve access. Meeting this requirement in short timescales is difficult. On standard processors, it can take several hours to reconcile the required number of quantum signals. This problem is exacerbated in the context of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite CV-QKD, in which the satellite flyover time is constrained to be less than a few minutes. A potential solution to this problem is massive parallelisation of the classical reconciliation process in which a large-code block is subdivided into many shorter blocks for individual decoding. However, the penalty of this procedure on the important final secured key rate is non-trivial to determine and hitherto has not been formally analysed. Ideally, a determination of the optimal reduced block size, maximising the final key rate, would be forthcoming in such an analysis. In this work, we fill this important knowledge gap via detailed analyses and experimental verification of a CV-QKD sliced reconciliation protocol that uses large block-length low-density parity-check decoders. Our new solution results in a significant increase in the final key rate relative to non-optimised reconciliation. In addition, it allows for the acquisition of quantum secured messages between terrestrial stations and LEO satellites within a flyover timescale even using off-the-shelf processors. Our work points the way to optimised global quantum networks secured via fundamental physics. I. INTRODUCTION Continuous Variable (CV) Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) has been intensively studied and significant breakthroughs have been achieved in both theory and experiment (see [1] for review). Compared to Discrete Variable (DV) QKD [2]–[5], CV-QKD can be implemented with well-developed technologies (e.g., homodyne detectors) in commercial fibreoptic networks [6], [7] and free-space optical communications [8], [9], providing it a potential advantage in practical deployments [10]–[14]. Considering the finite-key security of CV-QKD and DV-QKD, there are three critical parameters. These are, No, the number of original quantum signals sent by the transmitter (Alice) that are collected by the receiver (Bob); Ne, the number of quantum signals from which the protocol parameters are estimated;[1] and, ǫ, the probability that a QKD protocol fails to generate secret keys [15], [16]. To satisfy an upper limit on the failure probability of parameter estimation, Alice and Bob set Ne to a large value, which in turn implies a larger No. Despite the advantages in deployment, CV-QKD systems tend to demand a larger No to reach the same ǫ relative to DVQKD protocols. For example, to achieve a final key rate of 0.1 bits per pulse with ǫ = 10−9 , a CV-QKD protocol studied in [17] required No ≈ 109 signals. However, to achieve the same final key rate with ǫ = 10−14, the DV-QKD protocol in [18] required No ≈ 104 signals. This higher number of required signals in CV-QKD can render the classical post-processing (i.e. key reconciliation and privacy amplification[2] ) slow - possibly failing to meet target timescales for reconciliation. The end-users of a CV-QKD system expect the system to deliver two identical and secure keys under a limited time interval. For example, for satellite-based deployments, we would hope that the reconciliation is completed while maintaining a line-of-sight connection with the ground station. For a CV-QKD-enabled satellite with orbital parameters similar to Micius [20], this would mean the reconciliation should be completed in less than a few minutes. For the protocol we use in this work (see later), and for ǫ = 10−9 , this, in turn, would require the data rate of reconciliation to be at least 3.6 × 106 bits per second. For real-time reconciliation (say in subsecond timescales), two orders of magnitude increases in the reconciliation rates would be required. Demands for smaller ǫ will exacerbate the issue. Ideally, the rate of reconciliation should always be faster than the rate of quantum signalling. This all raises the question as to whether current CV-QKD reconciliation schemes are optimised for the highest possible key rates in bits per second. As we show here, this is not the case. Further optimisation is possible on all current schemes. To understand the issue better, we define reconciliation in the context of CV-QKD as a two-step scheme where the inputs to the reconciliation are non-identical N = 2No − 2Ne quadrature values[3] held by Alice and Bob (after parameter estimation), and the output is an identical bit string held by Alice and Bob [21]–[23]. Assuming a reverse reconciliation scheme, Bob first converts the quadrature values encoded by Alice in each signal to m bits. Alice, after converting each of her encoded real numbers also to m bits, then initiates some discrepancy-correction algorithms based on pre-defined errorcorrection codes to ensure her mN bits are identical to Bob’s. In this work, we will adopt Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for the error correction. However, as alluded to above, reconciling mN bits within a limited time frame can be challenging. State-of-the-art LDPCbased reconciliation schemes for CV-QKD systems involve parallelised computation on a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) [13], [24] or Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) [25], [26]. Reconciliation schemes implemented on FPGAs offer more programmable flexibility, but sometimes at the cost of reduced memory access relative to GPUs. For our purposes, both hardware architectures are useful - both offer massive parallelisation opportunities. These parallelisation solutions generally take the following two-step approach: 1) The mN bits are organised as m N-bit blocks to be reconciled. Each N-bit block is divided into multiple shorter blocks of size, say, NR. This is usually just set to a block size that can be processed within some timescale. 2) Then the m NR-bit blocks are reconciled in parallel (via independent processors) using optimally-designed LDPC decoders. However, what is missing in this approach is a proper optimisation analysis as to what the optimal value of NR is. As we show below, simply reducing NR at the cost of additional processing units is not an optimal solution. It transpires that in QKD the “penalty” cost of reducing the code rate (implicit in the use of small block lengths) significantly influences the bit per second final key rate. A more sophisticated analysis is required to determine the optimal reduced block length. Such an analysis is the key contribution of this work. Although we will adopt a specific CV-QKD protocol for our analysis, the key steps of our scheme will apply to any CV-QKD protocol. Our reconciliation scheme will deliver the highest reconciliation rate for a given processor speed - thus allowing for the optimal solution to CV-QKD reconciliation. [1] More precisely, in a CV-QKD protocol, Alice and Bob randomly select a Ne-signal subset from the No signals to estimate the parameters. [2] In this work, we focus on the key reconciliation step because it is the more time-consuming part in the post-processing steps while the privacy amplification involving only bit-wise operations can be easily implemented faster than the reconciliation [19]. [3] No and Ne are multiplied by 2 since Alice and Bob utilise both quadratures from heterodyne detection - the detection process we assume in this work.

Of course going from organizing small meetups to organizing a conference under own brand was a huge leap of faith but you'll never know unless you try :) my Was it easy? Oh no. Not easy AT ALL. I was crazy stressed and during the conference I skipped eating because I was the host of the firechats. But we had so many speakers and not a lot of time and I had to squeeze everyone in. But it was very gratifying. Most people from the conference went for food afterwards and I had the clarify of fasting being around friends and intelligent people in my favorite place in the world. Awesome feeling. But the 29 days before that were not fun :) plus Things that didn't work out We had 14 more sponsors that wanted to participate (and they have already signed up for next years' conference!) but I didn't have time to on-board them, collect payments and get their images and websites. I know it sounds easy but I had tons of other things that HAD to happen and I couldn't outsource this. So, one thing I should do is make the process of onboarding automated or at least easier to be done by someone else than me. Definitely a "fail" moment. Swag. Our swag provider didn't deliver on time. So we had no swag for the conference. Buuuuuut I am going to send swag to everyone that got a ticket. Duration. It should have been a 3-day conference. 7 hours firechats are brutal. In my defence, I never thought we'll have all these amazing speakers flying to the event. Food. Damn you COVID! We were not allowed to bring food to the conference so in my "built-to-fail" fashion, I started going to "private lunches" with each team separately. I Organized An Entire Conference In 30 days: Take That, Gary Vee

Hi Micha, welcome to our series “Behind the Startup.” Please tell us about yourself and the story behind ? Ishan Pandey: Nodle Thank you for inviting me to interview. We have been early supporters of Hackernoon from the very beginning. I have been an entrepreneur for almost 20 years in the space of telecommunications and wireless. Since I was a kid coding and later an internet fan, my dream has always been to connect the planet for free. In 2004, I was lucky to be part of the first telco in Europe that opened up communications for Skype, enabling them to sell communications to mobile and landlines. 10 years later, in 2014, after moving to San Francisco to build my next startup, I launched FireChat. Micha Benoliel: FireChat was the first off-the-grid messaging app leveraging mobile mesh technologies. 10 days after launching we already had a million users and what we thought would be a demo app for Burning Man ended up becoming the messaging app that powered many pro-democracy protests around the globe. The peak moment was in Hong Kong in September 2014 when half a million people downloaded the app to stay connected and organize the “Umbrella Revolution.” After that experiment leveraging mobile mesh networking technologies, it was clear to me that what we call the ‘smartphone infrastructure’ could be leveraged to build resilient networks for more than just moving messages. Since most smartphones use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and more than 50% of all IoT devices have a BLE interface, building an incentivized, decentralized wireless IoT network—for the people, and by the people—made a lot of sense.  Our network was thus born to build the networking and blockchain stack that we believe will lead to free connectivity. Please tell us about Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol and how it works with blockchain applications? Ishan Pandey: We have designed a blockchain network that leverages smartphones and other base stations supporting Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) like Cisco Meraki routers. BLE is a very advanced protocol that also has its own language for enabling communication and interactions between devices called GATT (an acronym for Generic Attribute Profile). Any BLE device or sensor that is supporting GATT or broadcasting data can use the Network. Micha Benoliel: For example, let's say you’re looking for a solution to collect information from your shipment packages equipped with a BLE tag and sensors. Your tag is broadcasting an identity with some measurement info that data can automatically be picked up by an ‘edge node’ (smartphone) in our Network and routed to your server. All that is needed from you is simple provisioning through the dashboard, and a few seconds later the stream of data appears. In most cases, there is no need for you to modify the firmware of the IoT device. This all happens seamlessly and in a matter of minutes. The internet's entry into different domains that have an impact on people's lives is astounding. Despite security and privacy issues, the Internet of Things is here to stay and will continue to shape our perceptions of the world. From a regulatory standpoint, what measures should be introduced so as to induce a better system wherein security and privacy issues are properly practised? Ishan Pandey: I am personally against unnecessary roadblocks that tend to limit innovation, instead of incentivizing it. What we need is education, and the first category of entities to educate are the manufacturers and operators of IoT devices. They need to take privacy and security as a top priority in anything they do. On our side, we have created technology and IP to enable security and privacy for any IoT device that wants to use the network. We have done a lot of work around secure beacon identity and our public key infrastructure. Blockchain is the only way that we believe we can secure the future of the Internet. In addition, since we are using our own rewards formula for connecting devices, we are looking at rewarding edge nodes more when the data is moved from a device using stronger security and privacy. We think this may also give the industry an incentive to better protect user privacy and increase the security of any data traffic. Using regulation to enforce security and privacy can be a double-edged sword as to create an efficient data chain since some information still needs to remain publicly available and accessible; e.g. air quality data, weather data, and alert information to name a few. Micha Benoliel: The Internet of Things (IoT) and the Internet of Everything (IoE) are evolving communication ideas that will effortlessly link a range of devices (such as smartphones, household appliances, sensors, and other network devices), people, data, and processes. Which domains will be best assisted with this new emerging technology? Ishan Pandey: IoT and IoE are great concepts. To realize their full potential, they need a few other trends to accelerate, such as: the miniaturization of radio chips, less regulation for using wireless radio frequencies (e.g. CBRS initiatives), more innovations in optimizing battery consumptions or enabling energy harvesting and in the field of spectrum efficiencies. Micha Benoliel: In a progressively hyperconnected world, in what ways can we increase corporate efficiencies and address important global societal issues? Ishan Pandey: The ultimate goal for the IoT of IoE according to our network’s vision is to realize the dream of becoming the connectivity layer for the of tomorrow. For instance, it doesn’t support showing unread messages, deleting messages, and has a limitation of 100 users in the chat group. Scales automatically You don’t need to worry about having too many users so your server doesn’t catch up to the number of requests, New servers will create themselves.
