A science fiction writer coined the useful term "cyberspace" in 1982, but the territory in question, the electronic frontier, is about a hundred and thirty years old. Cyberspace is the "place" where a telephone conversation appears to occur. Not inside your actual phone, the plastic device on your desk. Not inside the other person's phone, in some other city. THE PLACE BETWEEN the phones. The indefinite place OUT THERE, where the two of you, two human beings, actually meet and communicate. Others soberly pondered it, and wrote about it, and regulated it, and negotiated over it in international forums, and sued one another about it, in gigantic, epic court battles that lasted for years. And almost since the beginning, some people have committed crimes in this place. But in the past twenty years, this electrical "space," which was once thin and dark and one-dimensional—little more than a narrow speaking-tube, stretching from phone to phone—has flung itself open like a gigantic jack-in-the-box. Light has flooded upon it, the eerie light of the glowing computer screen. This dark electric netherworld has become a vast flowering electronic landscape. Since the 1960s, the world of the telephone has cross-bred itself with computers and television, and though there is still no substance to cyberspace, nothing you can handle, it has a strange kind of physicality now. It makes good sense today to talk of cyberspace as a place all its own. Because people live in it now. Not just a few people, not just a few technicians and eccentrics, but thousands of people, quite normal people. And not just for a little while, either, but for hours straight, over weeks, and months, and years. Cyberspace today is a "Net," a "Matrix," international in scope and growing swiftly and steadily. For a long time, there were no practical ways to trace or recount prior Domain Name System (DNS) records in any DNS zone. So when cybersecurity teams were investigating a suspicious IP address, they couldn’t see all of the domain names that it had resolved to in the past. This predicament left many stones unturned. Then , making it possible to dig into the DNS history of IP addresses and domain names connected to them. This intelligence has since become essential in the fight against cybercrime and led to the development of some of the best DNS history lookup resources available on the market today: passive DNS came along : A DNS history checker that provides quick access to all domain names that have been connected to an IP address along with the relevant timestamps. The report it generates is well-formatted and shareable. Since it is a web-based application, users can readily use it as is. Reverse IP/DNS Lookup : The information that can be retrieved from Reverse IP/DNS Lookup is also available via an API for easy integration for product developers and managers into existing commercial security platforms and in-house software. The API outputs are available in either JSON or XML, with code samples ready for most major programming languages. Reverse IP/DNS API : With more than 2 billion hostnames and over 500 billion historic DNS lookups, this massive repository is a handy resource for threat hunting and defense. The database can be downloaded in format and can prove invaluable in enriching threat intelligence platforms and security information and event management (SIEM) systems. DNS Database Download CSV Now that we have introduced these products, let’s look more closely at what they can bring to the table through brief cybersecurity demonstrations. The Power of Passive DNS for Cybersecurity Illustrated Consider the scenario where your existing detects the malicious IP address 5[.]2[.]78[.]19. This IP address is tagged as an associated with a credit card skimmer found on the Tupperware website. threat intelligence platform (TIP) indicator of compromise (IoC) Integrating Reverse IP/DNS API into a threat intelligence platform would enable security teams to see all domains connected to the malicious IP address. For our IoC, the program detected seven domains that resolve to the IP address, including servic-authenticdf[.]ml, mabanquexcvbnpparibas[.]ml, and stuckonyou[.]club. While this doesn’t mean that all connected domains are malicious, it’s worth looking into each of them. Similarly, DNS Database Download can reveal domains and IP addresses used by threat actors. This information can be fed directly into a domain & IP reputation scoring system to make the products more accurate. Let’s take the domain name fanohuse[.]com, which resolves to the following IP addresses as revealed by DNS Database Download: 106[.]10[.]248[.]150 124[.]108 [.] 115 [.] 100 212 [.] 82 [.] 100 [.] 150 74 [.] 6 [.] 136 [.] 150 98 [.] 136 [.] 103 [.] 23 All IP addresses are tagged as suspicious on TIP and VirusTotal. Additionally, take note that when you filter the database to show all domains associated with the suspicious IP addresses, another domain name comes into the picture, that is, americaonlineinstantmessenger[.]com. Why would such an association exist? A possible reason is that while threat actors use sophisticated methodologies and technologies, they often reuse their infrastructure to save on costs. Therefore, it would be logical to warn clients about the domain names associated with IP addresses when developing a domain and IP reputation scoring system. That way, your product can effectively cover all possible attack vectors. Even developers of TIPs and SIEM systems can use the database or its API version to make their products more comprehensive and reliable. Passive DNS is a powerful resource for cybersecurity. That is why solutions such as , its counterpart, and may be worth looking into, especially when developing cybersecurity products. In the same way, enterprises that want to enrich their existing security systems can conduct DNS history lookups to establish relationships between domains and IP addresses. 3 Best DNS History Lookup and Checker Resources for Cybersecurity

Credit: for UI Max Braun I’ve heard about people making these mirrors for a while now, but never thought to make one for myself. It was only recently that I realized I could actually benefit from having one. I often find myself running late in the mornings and this mirror has proven to be very valuable to me. It quickly provides me with the information I need before heading out of the house. The left side of the mirror displays the weather as well as a brief description of the forecast for the day. Below that is the wind speed. The right side has the time and date, followed by the current time it took to commute to my University. The commute is calculated while keeping in mind the real-time traffic that’s on the route. The Parts ‣ 2 Way Mirror Since I was on a college budget, I chose to go with the cheapest mirror I could find: a 2-way acrylic . I wanted a frameless look so I had a hole drilled in each corner of the mirror and used aluminum to mount it on my wall. mirror standoffs The cheapest price I found for these was listed on Amazon. ‣ The Monitor I salvaged the monitor from a broken I had sitting around. A quick eBay search found the proper to use with it. laptop controller board ‣ Amazon Fire TV Stick This part will vary depending on personal preference. The easiest way to display the information for me was by using an Amazon Fire TV Stick. Another popular way to do this is with a Raspberry Pi. If you’re interested in this route, there are so many great youtube tutorials going over how to do a similar version of this with a Raspberry Pi and an application called . Magic Mirror I wanted to be able to customize my mirror layout and widgets, so I used React Native to develop my own android app for it. I used Distance Matrix API for getting the commute travel time. Google’s For retrieving the weather updates, I used the . Dark Sky API ‣ Useful/Optional Supplies I cut a piece of black foam poster board to the shape of my mirror with a space cut out for the monitor to fit. This allowed the 2-way mirror to have a blacked out side and function as a normal mirror. The mirror and board are sandwiched together by the standoffs. I secured the monitor to the board with some strong tape. I found it helpful to have electric tape to black out the front edges and back of the monitor to reduce the amount of light that escapes. Marking the wall correctly is important, especially if using standoffs. Having a level to help me was incredibly useful. Take your time and make sure to measure twice. What's Next In the near , I plan to integrate a motion sensor to turn on the monitor only when it detects someone walk by. I also plan to add Alexa integration. future Material wise, I would use glass instead of acrylic next time. I noticed that going the cheaper route and using acrylic led to it having a funhouse mirror type of effect at certain angles. I believe this was due to the mirror being slightly bent. Overall this was a fun project and turned out to be useful, while only costing me around $200 to build. Hey Hackers! I’m Karim Fanous, and I’m the VP of Engineering at . strongDM First of all, a huge thank you to the HackerNoon community and staff for nominating me for a 2021 Noonies award! I’ve been nominated in the following categories please do check out these award pages and vote: HackerNoon Contributor of the Year - PHILOSOPHY: https://noonies.tech/award/2021-hackernoon-contributor-of-the-year-philosophy Learn more about my thoughts and opinions on technology and my journey in the tech industry via the interview below. 1. What do you do and why do you do it? (tell us your story) I’ve always been attracted to machines, computer specifically. My very first computer was a ZX Spectrum, with a whopping 48K memory. I learned how to code in BASIC on this computer and from that point onwards computers and coding became my passion. There’s something very creative and fulfilling about building programs and software. Unsurprisingly, I graduated with a degree in Computer Science and joined Microsoft in 2000. I stayed at Microsoft for 10 years, during which I saw the process of building software business. But somewhere along this journey, I lost touch with the initial passion I had with building software. Maybe it was the size of the company, maybe the products, maybe both. The next and current phase of my story is startups, something I have been doing since 2012. Startups are akin to meta-programming. It’s a very rewarding, and oftentimes hard, experience, but one which has been immensely gratifying to me. My role over the past 8 years has been that of VP of Engineering. I enjoy all aspects of building and scaling teams and thinking about the tooling, infrastructure that is needed to help grow and scale a business. It’s programming: people + product + processes to grow individuals, teams, and ultimately a business. 2. Tell us more about the things you create / write / manage / build! I think the primary creative avenue I have nowadays is writing. Writing allows me to think, learn, and better express myself. Writing has helped me grow and become a better person. It has rounded me up so to speak. I maintain my own personal blog and publish a few items here as well. The topics I write on usually center around problems I have faced, typically at work. If there’s one theme to my writing it might be “lessons learned from startup-land”. 3. How did you end up on your current career path? Do you like it? Pure chance! Many years ago I was sitting in a meeting at Microsoft, pondering what to do next. I had enjoyed my time at Microsoft but was restless. An email pops in my inbox from a recruiter at an obscure Seattle startup. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, so I responded. I ended up joining this company - Qumulo - and stayed there for almost 6 years. My initial role was fuzzy at best. I remember jotting out what I should do with one of the founders on the white-board. Whatever we wrote on that whiteboard became my job. As the company grew, I was offered new opportunities and ultimately ended up leading the Customer Success and Engineering organizations for about 4 years. The rest is history as they say. I still have that email :) 4. What tech are you most excited or passionate about right now and why? I think that we are at a pivotal time in the history of human-kind. On the one hand, we are faced with an existential threat - climate change. Yet, on the other hand the technological advances we have today are truly mind-boggling. There are two areas, which admittedly I know very little about, that excite me: bio-technology and clean energy. I think that continuing to invest in both of these areas can have a profoundly positive impact on humankind. Hopefully we can invest in sustainable and cleaner sources of energy. Similarly, tools like mRNA & CRISPR offer the potential to treat seemingly untreatable diseases. 5. What tech are you most worried about right now and why? I’m not worried about any particular piece of technology per se. Technology is a tool, which in-of-itself cannot cause deliberate harm. It’s how we - people - use these tools that can cause harm. There are however a couple of immensely powerful technologies that offer the potential to do both immense benefit or harm. Those are artificial intelligence and CRISPR (gene editing). In the case of artificial intelligence we can use this technology for immensely positive products in areas like healthcare (cancer detection) & agriculture. We can also use this technology to create echo chambers that amplify falsehoods. Similarly, gene-editing technology can be used to cure diseases and also to create custom-tailored babies. In both cases, the tool is the same, its the application, human-based, that yields a positive or negative impact. 6. If we gave you 10 million dollars to invest in something today, what would you invest in and why? I’d invest it in technology that can make some significant impact on climate change. I think this is an existential threat to human-kind and one in which technology alongside policies can help mitigate. The timing is now though. 7. What are you currently learning? I try to learn things that enhance my core skills or go deep, as well as others that increase them, to go wide. Areas that interest me are human phycology, organizational design and the art/science of management. These are areas that are directly applicable to what I do. I find that I learn best from reading books on these topics and picking up articles, podcasts from others in these fields. I also like to do deep into a particular technical area. At the outset of the pandemic, I signed up for the Andre Ng Deep Learning specialization at Coursera. It’s a wonderful course and got me quite engaged and versed in AI and Deep Learning. To the point that I ended up joining a deep learning startup out of London. Kheiron Medical is in the business of building deep neural networks for cancer detection. One of their products is already out in the market and tackles breast cancer. It’s a wonderful piece of technology built by an amazing company. 8. What’s the best advice you’ve ever given someone? A few years ago I was mentoring an engineering leader at an early-stage startup. She was new to the role and was struggling with decision making, more specifically wanting to be absolutely sure that she will make the right decision. The advice I gave her then is to be comfortable making decision with data and couple that with some way to measure the efficacy of your decision. If, after making your decision you discover that the metrics are showing that you made an incorrect decision, then adjust accordingly. It’s much better to make a decision with enough data and iterate on it versus laboring until we have 100% clarity, which oftentimes we will never have. Most decisions aren’t one-way, they can be adjusted and even reversed if proven to be wrong. sufficient I followed up with her a few months later and she was a completely different person. This perspective had changed her decision making process, allowed her to move with speed, yet prudence and also opened up the opportunity for her to adjust her decisions if proven to be incorrect. 9. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? A few years ago, Pete Godman, co-founder and back then CEO of Qumulo, asked me to “go figure out how to make our customers successful.” I had no clue what he meant by that or how to go about solving that problem. It was a domain completely novel to me - my background was in software engineering not in customer success or support. His advice to me was to think out of first principles. Solve the problem starting from first principles, experiment, learn and iterate. That advice has been with me since that day and has served me immensely well since then. And yes, it was instrumental in helping me build an amazing Customer Success organization at Qumulo. My career has spanned being an active software developer and more recently managing software teams at early stage startups. Outside of work I enjoy scuba diving, reading and more recently I picked up writing. I try to write an article every ~2 weeks or so. Interesting! What was your latest Hackernoon Top story about? I wrote a piece that was inspired by my reading a book on complex systems. My article shed some light on the similarities between complex systems and the process/art of building software products. Check out Karim’s story Complexity. Software. Resiliency Do you usually write on similar topics? If not, what do you usually write about? I usually write about topics that arise from my own experiences. These could be (hard) lessons learned or sometimes in-depth technical articles. All of my writing is inspired by the lessons learned from working at fast moving early stage startups Great! What is your usual writing routine like (if you have one?) I keep a backlog of potential stories, and pick one to ponder on. Once I pick a story from my backlog, I start ideating about what I want to write about in a doc. This usually starts out as a brain dump, then themes and structure is added. I usually go about this process for 10 days and then end up writing the article in a few hours, typically on Sunday evenings. Being a writer in tech can be a challenge. It’s not often our main role, but an addition to another one. What is the biggest challenge you have when it comes to writing? Time! It takes time to think about a topic and write about it. I decided that I wanted to try and write an article every 2 weeks and so far a year into my adventure, I have been able to do so. I am not necessarily looking to grow an audience, so I don’t worry about followers or readership, although those are nice to have. I write to learn. Writing helps me understand things better. It gives me more clarity What is the next thing you hope to achieve in your career? I’ve been fortunate enough to have a very rich and rewarding career. I don’t have specific goals, other than wanting to remain working with smart, driven, motivated and happy teams building great products! Wow, that’s admirable. Now, something more casual: What is your guilty pleasure of choice? Chocolate. The darker the better Do you have a non-tech-related hobby? If yes, what is it? Scuba diving is a huge passion of mine. CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSIONS In this study, we have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of target search in indoor environments by effectively locating multiple targets using a novel heuristic. Our proposed approach offers a reliable region-to-region navigation strategy that can accommodate user preferences during the search. The region-to-region navigation is efficient in terms of time as well as energy. It is inherently more robust to obstacles and occlusions as compared to point-topoint navigation. Furthermore, our system can perform these tasks in real-time and is suitable for small to medium sized indoor spaces such as homes and offices. The system can be improved using decision making strategies that optimize long horizon navigation planners. Another non-trivial extension of this work is to add a manipulator to the system that can perform high-level object pickup tasks and extend the current system to accommodate more complex and challenging environments.
