The US District Court stated that Microsoft should be split up into different companies, Bill Gates threatened to leave Microsoft and the MSFT stock price fell from $58 to $24. With hindsight we know that the situation resolved, and MSFT stock is now over US$300. Microsoft investors who sold out when things looked grim would have lost over 50% of their money. Those who bought the dip would have made over 1300%. The 1999 Microsoft antitrust case may have some parallels to 2023 cryptocurrency markets. As the US Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) uses a 100-year-old precedent to claim that over sixty cryptocurrencies should be classified as securities, prices have been falling on popular cryptocurrencies as well as associated crypto stocks. Binance, the world’s second-largest crypto exchange has exited Canada, citing regulatory concerns, and is facing an SEC lawsuit. Stock in rival crypto exchange Coinbase is down by half in the last year, and many cryptocurrencies on the SEC hit-list have dropped significantly. In contrast, the Blackrock fund will buy actual Bitcoin and hold it on behalf of fund investors, similar to how you can invest in a gold fund that buys and stores actual physical gold on your behalf. This is a major step up from the Grayscale option, and if approved, will open the floodgates for many more institutions to purchase Bitcoin and hold it for ordinary investors. Following on the heels of Blackrock, companies such as Wisdom Tree, Invesco, Fidelity, Citadel, Schwab, and Deutsche Bank have all applied for similar BTC funds. Ignoring all the ‘also-rans’, if we look at Blackrock and assume that 1% of its investors would like to hold Bitcoin, that will be $100 billion entering the crypto markets. That is a big number, and now you know why we only counted Blackrock, not the others. We do not wish to overhype the opportunity. There may be a chance that 1% of Fidelity investors would want in also, which would make the number a lot larger, or there may be only half of 1% of Blackrock investors who want crypto, in which case the figure would be lower. This puppy does not have crystal balls, so we cannot promise an SEC backflip, nor can we promise the floodgates of Wall Street cash will propel crypto markets to massive all-time highs in the next year or two, but markets have risen just on the possibility. Chainlink Chainlink is a decentralized oracle network that aims to provide smart contracts with real word data & information. In the traditional world, simple things such as the purchase or sale of something online can become quite complicated. If you are a buyer, do you send the money first and then hope for the seller to deliver on their promise and really send you the item? Or the other way around, if you are a seller, after you ship out your product? how do you know that someone will really pay you That's the whole reason why third party intermediaries such as eBay are so successful. But even there, you still have to trust a third party. Ideally, you would be able to do this in a trustless, controllable manner where nothing can go wrong. The answer is: you don't. That's what smart contracts are trying to solve, where instead of trusting and relying on the reputation and mercy of a third party, you only have to trust a smart contract - which basically means trusting math. A smart contract needs some way to know when and what happened in the real world, so it can automatically execute and make the decision it was programmed for. But how do you give a smart contract such information in a trustless and decentralized manner? The problem: but how exactly they are trying to achieve that is a topic for another article. Proven track-record of completed milestones: Nothing to complain. 1/1 This one is tricky, because the COMP token's only value is governance - a right to vote. It is debatable whether the value of this is higher than zero, but a price of well over $100 with millions of tokens in circulation? iv. Growth potential for the token: Definitely not. 0/1 With a rating of 2.0/4 Compound is an interesting platform to use and receive yield for lending, but investing into the COMP token is a definite no. Conclusion: 3. Polkadot Polkadot is a which is based on a whitepaper by Gavin Wood from October 2016. However, Polkadot is not really new, there are already more than 3 years of work and meanwhile a relatively large team working on this project. Proven track-record of completed milestones: Though 3 years until Mainnet is quite long, they did deliver, and we can give this a 1/1. Polkadot has the same problem as Chainlink here: since its Mainnet launch in May 2020, it experienced an enormous hype and now being under the top 10 coins already, definitely everyone in the cryptospace has already heard of Polkadot. iv. Growth potential for the coin: Potential, yes, but everyone already knows about it so some of the potential might be included in the price already. 0.5/1 With a rating of 3.5/4, Polkadot looks promising and may be worth investing some money in - but it definitely is no "hidden gem" Conclusion: 4. Again, it is questionable whether the value of this is above 0 - but iv. Growth potential for the token: with millions of tokens circulating, UNI definitely is not near the worth of its current price. 0/1 Uniswap receives a rating of 2.0/4, mainly not because it would be an uninteresting or useless project, but just because its token UNI does not really have a strong use-case to justify its price. Conclusion: 5. DeFiChain designed specifically for the decentralized finance (DeFi) industry.
