The way to understand the way our mind works, the way society works, and that of the natural universe may be evolution. While pondering this I, as usual, came across a larger and more difficult question: What is purpose and where might it come from? Does purpose need a source? First, let me backtrack. We accept that evolution is the best description for the multitude of living species and their different attributes. Life itself seems to be a result of evolution, the change from non-living matter to cells that reproduce comes through the process of interaction – the blending of information, randomness (random mutation), and a best fit, or actually just fit to external surroundings. Actually, the concept of internal, inside the organism or your body, and the outside world may be far more blurred than we usually imagine. In what you call your body there are millions of bacteria many of which are necessary to your bodily functions. Although separate organisms they contribute to the whole of you, your organism. You are an amalgam. Your skin is porous letting in UV rays, chemicals (vitamin E crème for instance is designed to penetrate the skin) and sound and radiation waves pass through us as does electricity changing us in the process. This sideline just helps to illustrate that we like linear boxes although the universe is not boxed or linear. My idea sprouted wings while reading “Time Reborn” by physicist Lee Smolin. He posits that the rules of the universe, the physical laws of quantum and Newtonian physics, are a “best fit” group of rules like the DNA in an animal instructing it how to survive in its environment. Cultures and societies can and do collapse – the death of a species – they can also spread memes like genes which hold the information for future use. But both animals and societies (groups of animals) have purpose.  In simple life forms the reproduction of the species is the purpose that drives everything. In simple cultures (groups) it is also the maintaining of the individuals to reproductive age to spread the species. But what is the purpose of the universe? What could the intrinsic purpose of a rock be?\ We, of course, have many purposes that are not directly related to the extension or maintenance of the entire species instead many relate solely to a good and happy life. Many people don’t breed but still have purpose. Humans just like many animals have dopamine receptors which give us pleasure from certain activities, and stress responses that cause us discomfort from bad experiences. Many of our evolutionary choice processes are driven by the desire to maximize pleasure and minimize pain. In a grander sense, we can invent purposes for ourselves. Be it making the world a better place or being the best footballer ever. Purpose seems to be a fluid thing, one that bends and maybe even forms from the environment and society in which we live. It may not need a linear root at all. Some people commit suicide and there is some speculation that whales may beach themselves as a form of suicide. That goes against the central purpose to progress the species. And, most importantly, many people never have children but still have purpose. Our need for a purpose to evolution is the way we try to interpret and understand the world. We want linear connections; we want a cause and effect. But there can be no ultimate cause, for nothing could cause it. Linear lines are endless. I am trying to get away from this way of thinking in this article about evolution being the way to comprehend the universe. However, there may be a way for our linear mind to understand such a concept. Perhaps the universe works in the same way as our brain. It does not need an intrinsic purpose from which all sub-purposes branch. Each micro-part, each atom, each string, and each energy field constantly adapts to the other fields and particles around it, and to the larger form, planets, stars, and gravity. An inter-loop of 4 (and possibly more) dimensional informational transfers; small to large, group and field to group, and field is all in constant flow. Constantly adapting to itself. It just is, and will, continue to be but in a constantly changing and interactive way. In the same way, we refer to the sun rising today as being a sunrise as we called yesterday’s, even though the temperature is different, the hue more magenta, and our mood less happy. The purpose (if required) is to form in the micro-interaction and randomness of evolution. Thus creating a larger organismic form, and then feeding back to itself.  We can box these things to absolutes that never existed. I would like to make one more comment about how physics may be able to help us grasp the non-linear. Throughout history, the prevailing narrative surrounding compliance has been one of necessity, not choice, and audits are approached with a sense of inevitability rather than opportunity. This conventional framing has branded the auditor as a necessary evil and means to an end, allowing a lack of evolution in the industry. However, that is all changing as innovators have given attention to solving a problem of growing importance. Regulations like the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the wave of international and state data that continue to grow are just signs of the times — data is valuable, and companies must go the extra mile to protect it. And, for SaaS companies that create value only when allowed to interact with that data, reassuring others they deserve trust is a critical business objective. privacy regulations One method for sharing an organization’s approach to security growing in popularity and importance is completing a (SOC 2®) report. This voluntary compliance framework showcases the policies and procedures companies put in place to protect sensitive information so potential clients can gain confidence. In turn, SOC 2 reports become a selling point for SaaS companies, especially amid growing cybersecurity concerns. These reports demonstrate an objective and independent third party (an auditor) has verified a company’s security commitments. System and Organization Controls 2 As SOC 2 reports and other compliance initiatives have been positioned to drive opportunity (or avoid stagnation) it’s placed the governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) function in the spotlight. What once received little attention suddenly serves as a lynchpin for growth and is driving new investments and fresh ideas into the space, which is revolutionizing the approach and attitude towards compliance. Why the time for simplified compliance is now There has never been a better moment to be a than today. In 2023, investment went to companies with this business model. As companies need more digital tools to automate workflows, SaaS companies, big and small, continue to innovate with tailored solutions for companies of all kinds to run in the cloud. Legal History The basis of all legal challenges – either for or against net neutrality legislation lies in determining which agency will regulate the Internet in the U.S., and then what rules that agency will apply. 7.1. 2005 Order In 2005 the FCC released the first agency guidelines regarding the “open Internet” – the four rules [13]: “To encourage broadband deployment and preserve and promote the open and interconnected nature of the public Internet, ... • consumers are entitled to access the lawful Internet content of their choice. • consumers are entitled to run applications and use services of their choice, subject to the needs of law enforcement. • consumers are entitled to connect their choice of legal devices that do not harm the network. • consumers are entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers.” 7.2. National Cable & Telecommunications Association v. Brand X Internet Services (2005) These rules were challenged by industry groups representing the ISPs as being too broad. And greatly complicating the issue down the road, in Section II, Paragraph 4, the FCC specifically states that the ISPs are not Title II but are in fact covered under Title I ancillary. On June 27, 2005 the United States Supreme Court (applying Chevron deference) upheld a determination by the FCC that cable Internet providers were an "information service," and not a "telecommunications service" as classified under the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia wrote the dissenting opinion, and we will see that his words would later seem prescient when quoted in the majority opinion ten years later in 2016[15]. 7.3. 2010 Open Internet Order In a 2010 Executive Order, President Obama directed the FCC to formalize regulations regarding Net Neutrality. The 2010 Order applied much of the same oversight of “common carriers” to the ISPs. The 2010 Order laid out three basic principles: transparency, no blocking, and no unreasonable discrimination. 7.4. Verizon Communications Inc. v. FCC (2014) The 2010 Order was tested in the Supreme Court when Verizon sued the FCC. The Supreme Court ruled that two of the three main principles of the 2010 Order did not fall under the FCC’s jurisdiction of Title I ancillary. The Court upheld the Transparency requirements but found that the other two requirements required the FCC to treat ISPs as “common carriers.” In its findings, the Court suggested some possible fixes. The Court also recognized the “Virtuous Cycle” of edge providers and recognized that ISPs had the “means and the incentive” to disrupt this cycle to the detriment of consumers. 7.5. 2015 REPORT AND ORDER ON REMAND, DECLARATORY RULING, AND ORDER After a public comments period, the FCC sought to re-define the regulations to define ISPs as “common carriers” and further codify the rules regarding Net Neutrality. In February of 2015 the FCC published the REPORT AND ORDER ON REMAND, DECLARATORY RULING, AND ORDER. The 2015 Order classifies ISPs under Title II of the Communications Acts of 1934,1996[14] and it gives strict guidelines regarding Net Neutrality. The 2015 Order states no blocking, no throttling, and no paid prioritization. The FCC sited the 2014 Verizon findings in the order and pointed to the Court’s reference to the “Virtuous Cycle” as authority to change the ISP classification to “common carrier.” 7.6. United States Telecom Association v. FCC and Independent Telephone and Telecommunications Alliance (2016). The large telecom companies sued the FCC, however this time the smaller telecoms joined on the side of the FCC. On June 14 of 2016, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia refused to hear the case, thereby upholding the ruling in USTA v FCC that the FCC had operated under its authority to re-classify the ISPs as “common carriers.” Circuit Judge Srinivasan joined by Circuit Judge Tatel wrote the majority opinion. Amongst the various considerations was the following [15]: Justice Scalia’s dissenting opinion [in the 2005 decision], joined by Justices Souter and Ginsburg, went even further. According to Justice Scalia, the statute permitted only one conclusion: cable broadband ISPs “are subject to Title II regulation as common carriers, like their chief competitors [e.g., DSL] who provide Internet access through other technologies.” Id. at 1006 (Scalia, J., dissenting). The agency, in Justice Scalia’s view, had no discretion to conclude otherwise. And he expressly accepted that his reading of the Act would result in “common carrier regulation of all ISPs,” a result he considered “not a worry.” Id. At 1011. The large telecoms appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and on November 5th, 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case, thereby upholding the previous findings. 7.7. 2017 - 2018 FCC Changes Direction In 2017 President Donald Trump appointed Ajit Pai as Chairman of the FCC. Chairman Pai has changed the FCC’s direction and decided the FCC should not regulate ISPs with regard to Net Neutrality, thereby rendering the Court’s ruling temporarily moot as it applies to the current direction of the FCC. The FCC did stipulate that ISPs must be transparent in any throttling or associated fees. The Supreme Court’s 2018 finding does however mean that should the FCC change direction again, that the stricter rules would have legal precedence. Today, interfaces are everywhere, serving as a vital link between humans and ubiquitous technologies. A good interface in 2024 is a world apart from that of the early days of the internet: it has progressed from a screen with simple text to a complex solution that puts user experience first. In this text, we will look at what constitutes a high-quality interface today, as well as how visual design complements functionality, which is defined by technological advancements. A Bridge Between Aesthetics and Functionality While the backend of any application or software focuses on server-side logic and data processing, the frontend is in charge of the human-facing element, or interface. Interfaces combine functionality and visual design, meaning aesthetically appealing and highly usable. What is Aesthetic Design? Accepted truth states that a good-looking design is more appealing than a bad-looking one, implying that an interface should be aesthetic: harmonious, pleasing, simple to understand, and intuitive. This is why frontend developers collaborate with designers and follow to create visually appealing interfaces. This trend was triggered by the release of the iPhone in 2007, which gave mobile phones the ability to compete with traditional computers. This is why interfaces now should be able to adapt to various screen sizes, ensuring a consistent and enjoyable user experience across devices. Fluid grids and breakpoints are essential in this scenario because they orchestrate layouts that change as users switch from desktops to tablets or smartphones. Interfaces should be responsive across all devices, regardless of whether the application or website is mobile first or desktop first, as shown in the example below: Source Accessibility A critical aspect of functional design today is ensuring that disabled people can easily use websites and applications. Accessibility is typically defined by the POUR principle in terms of the interface's key qualities - perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust - implying that digital content is accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Let’s take a look at the POUR principles: The perceivable principle states that content should be presented in a variety of ways for users to perceive. It entails not only using high-contrast colours to improve visibility, but also providing text alternatives for non-text content in the form of large print, braille, speech, and so on. The UX elements and navigation should be easy to use. For example, users must be able to operate the application without a mouse using a keyboard or a screen keyboard. The interface should include labels and instructions to help users understand how to use it. The Robust principle states that digital content should be interpretable by a wide range of user agents, allowing users to access and interact with it regardless of technological advances or limitations. For example, code should adhere to web standards so that screen readers can accurately interpret and relay information to visually impaired users. Source SPA and PWA The introduction of Single Page Applications (SPAs) and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) has altered our interactions with the web, making them critical approaches for improving user experience. SPAs load a single HTML page and dynamically update it as the user interacts with the app, resulting in a more fluid and fast user experience. PWAs, on the other hand, are intended to work on any platform that uses a standards-compliant browser, providing features similar to native apps, such as offline capability and push notifications, to improve the user experience.
