Last December, stories started surfacing of a new virus affecting the Chinese city of Wuhan. At the epicenter of the outbreak, Chinese officials started building new hospitals to aid the people in need. What started out as something that looked like a flu epidemic, soon escalated into a full blown pandemic, called the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). As numbers of infected people are on the rise, the impact on people’s lives continues to grow, beyond anything most of us have ever witnessed in our lives. Social distancing and thorough hand washing seem to be the primary action humans need to abide by in order to slow down the spreading of the virus. On the 19th of March, US President Trump announced three promising drug treatments to battle the coronavirus. Two of them, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have been approved by the FDA to start clinical trials on treating the coronavirus. The other is Regeneron, a drug that has previously been used to successfully treat people infected with the Ebola virus. World Health Organization (WHO) Senior Advisor, Bruce Aylward, stated, ‘There’s only one drug right now that we think will have real efficacy, and that’s remdesivir’. Two US companies, and (starting the 23rd of March) have started the process of rolling out home COVID-19 tests. The Nurx one is projected to cost around $181 while Everlywell sells them for $135. The initial supply is low, but they project to be able to scale up manufacturing soon. Nurx will be selling their supply each morning, Monday through Saturday, at 7 AM PST, until stocks run out. Nurx Everlywell I would like to emphasize that I am not an expert in this field, all the information stated in this article is based on reliable sources (official government or national health authorities), field experts like virologists and research papers on the topic. A recent , show positive results with patients that were administered hydroxychloroquine as a treatment to COVID-19. The preliminary results look promising, although the trial group was very small (20 patients in the treatment group, 16 in control group). In the treatment group, 6 patients were administered hydroxychloroquine in combination with azithromycin. Within 5 days all 6 patients tested negative on the coronavirus. The treatment group patients that solely received hydroxychloroquine had a 50% decrease in positive testing for COVID-19 after 6 days. Almost 90% of patients in the control group still tested positive for COVID-19 after 6 days. Remdesivir In the state of Nebraska, a has started on the 25th of February, using remdesivir as a drug to fight tcoronavirus. Remdesivir, manufactured by , is a broad-spectrum antiviral treatment. On March 17th remdesivir has been as a drug to treat COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms in the Czech Republic. officially approved Concluding remarks After doing this research, I must say I am surprised by the overall abilities to use existing medicine to treat COVID-19. The research that has been previously done on anti-virus drugs to treat SARS and MERS, can be further built upon with coronavirus patients after approval from the proper authorities. However, most treatments are for faster recovery and/or reducing the symptoms. Besides the four drugs discussed in this articles, there are also other promising anti-virus medicine that are being tested at the moment. In China, COVID-19 patients show positive results after using favipiravir, in a clinical trial. (developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm) is used in Japan as a treatment against the flu. Patients that took part in the trial recovered sooner from the Coronavirus (after 4 days median, in oppose to 11 days, without favipiravir). But even without that, I found that meditation videos and apps can be extremely helpful meditation guides. Calming Meditation Apps and Websites There are a wide variety of meditation apps available. Insight Timer has certain aspects that are free and some paid programming as well. Though it’s been a few years since I’ve used the platform, I appreciated that there was some free content. As I was beginning on my meditation journey, having the free Insight Timer app seemed risk-free and less intimidating for me. Looking at the Insight Timer website now, I see the company still has a commitment to providing helpful and free content. I was able to listen to an hour-long talk about mindfulness by Lama Rod Owens without even signing up. Headspace The next meditation app I tried was Headspace in 2019 before the beginning of the Pandemic. Headspace has quirky branding and a unique message. I found it very educational. I learned more about deep breathing techniques through the app. Some of these breathing techniques really helped my sleep if I did them consistently at bedtime. This was also an app that introduced me to sleep stories which are short ASMR stories you can listen to as you are falling asleep. These were also great for my bedtime routine. I did find that the app had some slowness and technical issues when I was using it, but I enjoyed using the app immensely for the most part. The company has special sales plans for and . students families Calm.com Most recently, I have tried the Calm app. I have tried the app for about 2 weeks so far and I have explored the daily content as well as sleep music and stories. I have not noticed any technical issues so far with the phone app or the website, which was reassuring. There are several daily lessons in mindfulness and mindful movement from teachers like Jay Shetty, Tamara Levitt, and Jeff Warren. Also, the numerous sleep stories are narrated by many celebrities like PINK and Matthew McConaughey. I allowed the app to send me reminder notifications, and the app reminds me to write down things I am grateful for. It also sends me messages to remind me to be more mindful during the day. These have actually been really helpful for me to take a minute to breathe and remember to practice gratitude. The app allows you to turn off the notifications or adjust the frequency so you don't feel overwhelmed by them. Strangely enough, during the Pandemic, I did not turn to any meditation apps to feel less stressed. I found Youtube to be the most accessible for me at the time. I found myself scrolling through my Youtube feed a lot for entertainment and stress relief. I found some channels that were helpful for meditation music and meditation ideas. Using these as a starting point, I encourage you to explore the internet for other resources! With the Calm app notifications, I have been getting some meditation and meditative thought on most days recently and that has been a welcome change in my life. During my time as a (GDSC) Lead, a lot of my fellow students who were just starting out with various tech-related concepts often approached me with various problems. Google Developer Student Clubs A lot of them were in the form of "I just got started with technology x. How do I get started working on / completing projects or applying for jobs? I feel like I still suck at it, and have imposter syndrome." How can an absolute beginner be a fake / an imposter? Imposter syndrome had become a very common term, especially on , that everyone thought the difficulties they encountered when starting out were signs of imposter syndrome. It's very likely people starting out might have Twitter beginner syndrome instead. A few clarifications: My intended definition of a beginner - someone just getting started with tech (or any other similar concept), most likely still in the tutorial phase, most likely just before or just after getting their first tech role. The intended goal of this article - help beginners separate (or be aware of) the normal beginners' fears & difficulties from imposter syndrome. Why you might not have imposter syndrome as a beginner. This may even lead to further success and recognition – and feeling like an even bigger fraud. Beginner Syndrome Learning to do anything worthwhile when you’re just starting out is . Freaking out about not knowing anything is totally normal, and every budding beginner feels . hard overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of all that they don’t know These signals are actually just hints that we're just not yet that good at what we are trying to do. Imposter Syndrome, Those feelings of inadequacy are just “beginner’s fear.” Trying something new can induce so much anxiety that it causes many to quit something they may have dreamed of starting for years. Dunning-Kruger effect The chart explains how the less someone knows about the topic, the more confident (and sometimes arrogant) they are about their understanding of it (this comes right after beginner’s syndrome). Imposter syndrome describes the opposite: it manifests when people who are experts on a topic do not feel confident in their understanding and show modesty. While it is common for us to experience such feelings, they’re signs that we are often unable to accurately assess our own competence. Feeling Insecure When You First Start Something Does Not Mean You Have Imposter Syndrome

If you have children you may have worried about how easy it is for them to come across hard-core porn on the internet. If this worries you and you want to do something about it, here is a completely free and easy way you can configure most home networks to filter out porn, along with malware and other unwanted content. How it works Every time you go to a website, like cnn.com, for example, your browser needs to find the unique IP address that belongs to that website (when I wrote this article cnn.com, for example, had an IP address of 151.101.1.67). The human-readable address (cnn.com) only exists to make life easier for us people. The computers on the Internet all use IP addresses to communicate with each other. There are special servers on the Internet called Domain name Servers (DNS) that ‘know’ about all websites on the Internet and exist for the sole purpose of translating website addresses to IP addresses. When you type an address into your browser, the browser first asks your computer, then your Wifi router, and then your Internet Service Provider (in that order) for a DNS server it should use to translate the website address to an IP address. It will use the first one it gets back and asks that DNS server to provide it with the IP address for the website you are trying to visit. The browser then uses the IP address to fetch the webpage from the webserver. Two DNS servers from OpenDNS will check every request they get and will block requests to inappropriate sites. So, when the browser requests an IP address from one of these DNS servers, the family friendly DNS server checks if the website is a porn site and, if it does, returns the IP address of its error page instead of the actual IP address of the website. So, to make sure porn sites cannot be viewed on a home network, all we need to do is configure the Wifi router to use the OpenDNS servers. The instructions below explain how to set up your router to point to a family-friendly DNS server. Setup Instructions To set this up, all you need to do is configure your home Wifi router to use a family-friendly DNS server from called ‘OpenDNS Family Shield’. Here are the three simple steps you need to follow to implement this: OpenDNS Browse to your router and log in Find the DNS configuration setting and enter the following two DNS servers 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123 Save and reboot your router Unfortunately, this is not always as straightforward as it was on my router. If you have trouble getting this right, you can try the ‘The Ultimate Guide to Changing Your DNS Server’ linked below. Some caveats Most, but not all routers allow for a DNS configuration. If yours does not you can still set the OpenDNS up on every computer your children use. If you want to do this, use the ‘The Ultimate Guide to Changing Your DNS Server’ linked below. If your children are tech-savvy enough to know how to set their device up to use a specific DNS server, they can bypass the router DNS altogether. Then a DNS filter set up on the router will not work, but then, I assume, no technical solution will be able to stop them from viewing pornography if that is what they want to do. Mobile data bypasses your router altogether and goes straight to a cellphone tower. If your children switch their devices to mobile data, they can get access to any site the cellphone providers DNS allows. Some mobile providers allow you to set up a family filter option on the account. You may need to check with the provider if yours does. This filter method will also not work if you use a VPN. VPN’s use their own DNS servers and unless your VPN provider has a DNS with a family filter, this will not work for you. However, a VPN is a simple way to get around this setup in case you want specific computers on your network to get around the filter. Talk to your children The reality is that no filtering is 100% and most children will come across porn at some stage. This is why I recommend that you talk with your children about it, regardless of whether you set up this filter or not.
